Bahrain – The perfect itinerary for an island getaway for families & couples!

Sometimes all you want is a relaxing destination to visit with your friends or family. It shouldn’t be a very long flight. It should be ideal for a 3-4 day getaway . It should be easy to get around. Bahrain ticks ALL those boxes and we are here to help you plan a trip to this country with our four day Bahrain itinerary.

Bahrain translates to the “two seas” and is situated in the Arabian Gulf. The island country is ideal if you’re in for a city break with a mix of culture, beaches, and good food. As a travel destination, it is perfect for everyone from families to young couples. The country took us by surprise and we really enjoyed our time there. Here is everything you need to know to plan a trip to Bahrain and our suggested list of things to do in Bahrain 🙂

Getting your visa for Bahrain

If you’re an Indian passport holder, you can get an evisa for Bahrain . The application is straightforward and needs basic documents such as copies of your passport, flight tickets, financial proof etc. You can find all details and apply here on the official website listed above.

Getting Into Bahrain & getting around In Bahrain

You can opt for VIP services upon getting to Bahrain International Airport using Hala Bahrain – this allows access to a luxurious arrival lounge, concierge services, and seamless immigration at the airport. You can get cabs in Bahrain but we would suggest renting a car or hiring a car with a driver cum guide for your trip in Bahrain. Having a car will make it much easier for you to explore multiple sites in Bahrain. Most hotels can arrange for this.

Where To Stay in Bahrain

There is no shortage of hotels in Bahrain, no matter what your preference or budget. The app called Bahrain is a great place to look for places to stay in Bahrain. Here are a few suggestions you can look for while browsing the app as we were able to experience these places. However, you can find many good options on the app:

Raffles Al Areen Palace and Spa is ideal if you’re looking for a luxurious hotel away from the hustle-bustle of the city centre. Villas are spacious, well-quipped, and each villa comes with its own private pool and butler. One thing is for sure – if you are staying here, you might never want to get out to explore the city 😉 Raffles Al Areen Palace and Spa is 40 minutes away from the centre and has a huge water park right next to it, which also makes it an ideal staycation option for residents of Bahrain.

Sofitel Bahrain is another option that offers luxurious rooms with beach views. The hotel also has its own beachfront, which makes it very popular with large families and also as a wedding venue.

The Merchant House is a boutique luxury hotel located right in the middle of all the action in Manama. If you love history and culture, this is the right choice for you as Manama Souk is minutes away. The hotel has modern amenities, including an amazing rooftop coffee shop.

Al Areen Palace and Spa Bahrain

Day by day Itinerary for your trip to Bahrain

Fly from your city to Bahrain. Bahrain International Airport is brand new and has all the facilities you can possibly need upon arrival. Once you reach your hotel, we suggest resting for a while before heading out to explore a bit.

On your first day explore the busy alleyways of Muharraq Souk to get a feel of local markets in the island country. Make sure you stop by the renovated houses of Muharraq which have been restored beautifully. Take a walk around. You can also find a vertical garden and traditional Bahraini coffee shops in this area.

Head to Bahrain Fort at sunset – the historic building was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and is central to the Dilmun Empire. Today, it is the first pitstop for most tourists to Bahrain.

Next, head to the upscale The Avenues Mall. Take a stroll through the mall, shop a bit, and have dinner at the newly-opened Em Sherif Sea Cafe – a Lebanese seafood eatery. Make sure you try their shawarmas, grilled fish, and the decadent Middle Eastern dips – hummus, tzatziki etc – some of the best we had during our time in Bahrain. Their portions are huge, so order with caution 😉

island trip bahrain

Did you know that Bahrain is an archipelago of 33 islands and many sandbanks, which are visible only during low tide. You can rent a private or shared boat and visit one of these sandbanks. We visited this sandbank at the first low tide of the day.

Your trip to Jarada Island will be dependent on the time of the low tide. This gorgeous sandbank is only 45 minutes away. Once you get there, enjoy the sparkling blue waters while the crew sets up a mobile campsite and BBQ lunch for your group. You should definitely try Pearl Shucking i.e. hunting for pearls in Oysters collected by the crew – you will be surprised at just how many pearls you can find! If you’re a keen diver, you can also extend your trip and go pearl diving – there is no better place than Bahrain for this!

This half day trip begins in the morning and ends around 4 pm. If you do want to head out for dinner, The Quarry is a great place for a relaxed immersive dinner – it offers a lounge atmosphere with live music and great food.

This tour, along with most of the other experiences mentioned in this article can be booked on “Best of Bahrain” website.

This day depends on your personal preferences and the group you’re travelling with. Let us give you a few options on how you can spend your third day in Bahrain

  • If you’re travelling with kids or enjoy experiential activities, then drop by A’ali Pottery. Here you can take a short pottery workshop and craft a vase or two for yourself. This is also a great plan to pick some souvenirs for friends and family.
  • If you enjoy Formula 1, then you must check out the racing track at Bahrain International Circuit, especially if the races are on! You can also try the Karting Experience right next door. This is especially fun if you’re travelling in a large group. Make sure you visit the Karting track in the evening as days can get really hot.
  • If you’re an avid golfer, then head to the Royal Golf Club. Besides the golf range, they also have a number of activities for kids and a gorgeous restaurant overlooking the golfing greens for your family
  • If you enjoy water sports, then head to a public beach such as the beautiful Al Jazair Beach. Here you can go kitesurfing, sailing, or just relax and enjoy the blue waters. We suggest renting equipment or perhaps arranging a lesson in sailing from Beach Culture.
  • When travelling with kids, Bahrain’s biggest waterpark “The Lost Paradise of Dilmun” is a great place to beat the heat and have some fun.

If you’re a seafood lover, then make sure you book a meal at Fish market Bahrain. It offers scrumptious food in addition to great views of Bahrain Bay. On the other hand, if you’re craving some pan Asian food and a beautiful dining setting, head to Monsoon restaurant in Manama. We loved our meal here.

Couple go karting in Bahrain

By day 4, you would’ve experienced the historical, the scenic, and the leisure aspects of Bahrain. But there is still a lot to do. We suggest starting your day with a gander at Manama Souk. Have breakfast at the iconic Haji Cafe – an institution in Bahrain. Try their signature dishes like their Breakfast omelette, their cheese flatbread, and kadak chai.

Follow that up with a walk through Manama Souk and a visit to the iconic Al Fateh Grand Mosque, an architectural gem. You must also explore the Bahrain National Museum, which chronicles the history of the country in an interactive and interesting manner. Walk through the various exhibits as you decide your plan for the rest of the day

If you’re keen to learn more about the history of the country, you could take a scenic boat ride to Bu Maher Fort. On the other hand, if you’re keen on shopping, you could head to City Center Mall!

Dinner has to be at the buzzing Block 338 – Bahrain’s hippest venue. Block 338 is a collection of restaurants that comes alive each night, especially on weekends. Take a walk around the area before you decide where to eat. We opted for dinner and drinks at Clay Restaurant – the vibe is incredible and the Japanese food and cocktails are truly memorable. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

breakfast at Haji cafe in Bahrain

That’s it. 4 packed days  provide a perfect introduction to this country bursting with culture, historic, and scenic spots. It can easily be covered during a long weekend. We hope our Bahrain itinerary has been helpful for you to plan a trip to this beautiful country. For more ideas and suggestions, please consult the Bahrain Tourism website.

Hi Thanks for sharing a wonderful and detailed itinerary. Would you be able to share the reference for the company you used for the Private Jarada Island tour. Thanks ?

The company name is Delma Marine 🙂

What’s the best way to commute in Bahrain? Taxi? Or should we rent a car?

Taxi’s are affordable but if you’re comfortable driving, then definitely rent a car ?

Hey.. thanku for such detailed blog. Can you please tell the expenditure for this tour?

What apps shall one download before visiting Bahrain? (Like Uber, grab, gojek anything like that)

Also, can we rent Bikes instead of cars?

What kind of transportation works best in Bahrain?

Hey rental car or cabs 🙂

Going to Jarada Island - A Boat Trip Extraordinaire

By bill grieve.

Jarada Island in Bahrain

A fantastic recreational boat trip out to a small island in the Arabian Gulf in absolute Five Star luxury.

Surrounded by water, Bahrain, offers many sea and beach attractions – though one of the most impressive outings available must be a trip to Jarada Island with the Ritz Carlton Hotel’s elite Pearl 1 “Wave breaker”, manufactured locally by Al Dhaen Marine.

The Ritz Carlton Hotel in Bahrain does nothing by half measures and the trip to Jarada Island illustrates this perfectly. The arrangements were exact and from the time the first enquiry was made to our final farewell - everything went perfectly.

On our arrival at the Royal Beach Club, we found that all necessary arrangements had been made and we were looked after from beginning to end. A simple waiver is required from each passenger and all are required to bring a CPR or Passport with them for security reasons.

The lunch on offer consisted of  a generous selection of appetizing menus including - “Middle East”; “French” or our chosen “International” - Guacamole-Tomato Salsa-Tortilla Chips; a selection of fresh sandwiches, crudités; cucumber-carrots-lettuce-tomato, celery and nuts accompanied by an assortment of cookies. All options were prepared to the highest standards as one would expect of our gracious hosts.

island trip bahrain

As we journeyed seamlessly across the Arabian Gulf, having stopped briefly at a floating checkpoint as we left Bahrain, it was reminiscent of being chauffeured about in a luxury vehicle  The warm fresh salty sea air, sunshine and aquamarine waters tantalized almost every sense.

As the Pearl 1 planed across the flat, calm sea towards Qatar, the gentle sway of the changing tides and the purring of the vessel’s Yamaha motors combined to offer an enchanted experience on the high seas – culminating in our arrival at Jarada Island after only an hour.

On our arrival. the island was partially exposed and with the tide going out, the sandy outcrop quickly expanded. Boats and jet-skis buzzed around the beach like bees; waiting to perch on a pollen-filled flower. The crew set anchors and erected umbrellas, tables, folding chairs and even a fully stocked portable fridge.

Music was also provided as a welcome accompaniment resulting in an almost holiday atmosphere surrounded by swimming, sunbathing and serenity around the boat. As we enjoyed the soft, washed light sand, the visitors were in absolute harmony with nature and in awe of the raw beauty of Jarada Island.

To the side, one of our group’s members did Yoga on the soft sand with the waves gently lapping against her forearms, while the rest of us sat and ate a delectable lunch listening to the music and soaking in the sunshine amidst the ambience of an absolutely unforgettable setting that any guest would never want to end…

island trip bahrain

The return trip was an absolute dream with all of us mesmerized by the passing sea spray, warm air rushing past our arms and faces and the knowledge that we were in safe hands and enjoying the ultimate comfort.

The return journey took us slowly past a wide variety of photographic opportunities and some of the best panoramic views available of Manama and the Seef district from the sea.

This was truly an amazing trip and provided an exceptional experience and value for money. There is no better way to visit Jarada Island, than with the leading brand in hospitality and entertainment–i.e. The Ritz Carlton, Bahrain.

Jarada Island History Qit’at Jaradah is a cay in the Arabian Gulf to the east of Bahrain Island, located 32 km (20 mi) east of Manama, the capital of Bahrain approximately midway between Bahrain and Qatar, within the 12-mile (19 km) territorial waters of both countries.

It was one of several maritime features contributing to a long-running dispute between Bahrain and Qatar. While historically Qit’at Jaradah has not been considered an island, Bahrain claimed in 2000 that it measured approximately 12 by 4 meters (39 ft × 13 ft) at high tide with an elevation of approximately 0.4 meters (1 ft 4 in), and 600 by 75 meters (1,969 ft × 246 ft) at low tide. The opposing view is that it is a low-tide elevation. The feature is uninhabited and without vegetation. (Courtesy Wikipedia)

Old meets new. Bahrain's main source of income at a time used to be the sea (fishing and pearl diving etc.), while Banking and tourism are among the new sources of income.

Like an oyster, Bahrain has a rough exterior that takes some prising open, but it's worth the effort. The storied location of the ancient Dilmun empire and home to the epicentre of the Gulf's pearling past, Bahrain has a history to reflect on with pride. Boasting its own Formula 1 Grand Prix, a growing art and foodie scene heavily cross-pollinated by Manama's huge expat population, and a wealth of activities enjoyed on the azure waters surrounding this collection of islands, Bahrain will appeal to travellers who seek an unpretentious, yet confident country bearing all the hallmarks of a modern, wealthy Gulf nation. This multilayered and multicultural destination is often overlooked by tourists, so you'll probably have the place all to yourself.

The information in this article is inspired by The Rough Guides guidebooks — your essential guides for visiting the world.

The two 50-storey towers that soar over the financial district are a major landmark on the waterfront. You will have seen this magnificent racetrack on the Formula 1 circuit before – even if only on television. If you're in the country a visit is one of the best things to do in Bahrain. Tours take you to the Sakhir Tower which offers a 360-degree bird's eye view, the Race Control Tower, BIC Media Centre and the track itself.

Looking for a thrilling experience? Try driving on the track in anything from a motorbike to a single-seat racing car, or you can even try your hand at off-road 4x4 driving in a Land Rover.

Arabian horses have a beauty and mystique all their own, with a history dating back thousands of years. Legend has it that the Queen of Sheba gave a pure Arab mare to King Solomon to show her love.

One of the most exciting things to do in Bahrain is riding your horse across the sands of Karbabad Beach as the sun sets over the Gulf. You don't need to be an expert rider, experienced handlers will be there to make sure your trek is a safe one.

Bahrain’s dining scene has been getting international attention in recent years, and a good taster for the experience is Wolfgang Puck’s flagship restaurant on the waterfront in Manama.

The view outside is matched by the sleek inside of this American-style steakhouse, equally famous for its seafood as its prime beef. It’s recognised as one of the world’s best restaurants, so you might want to make a reservation before you even leave home.

Bahrain’s pearls are recognised as being among the very best in the world, and the industry here once employed almost half the male population. No wonder diving for them was off-limits to visitors for decades. However, scuba divers can now take to the clear blue waters offshore to collect up to 60 oysters at once, keeping any pearls you may find once they are opened.

Named after the founder of Bahrain, this mosque was built with imported Italian marble, Austrian glass and Indian teak. It’s one of the largest mosques in the world, with a library holding many historic volumes.

Visitors are made to feel very welcome and knowledgeable guides (who speak English, Hindi and many other languages) are on hand will answer any questions you have about the building or Islam during the regular free guided tours.

7. Discover Bahrain's history at Bahrain National Museum

A visit to Bahrain's National Museum is one of the best things to do in Bahrain to embrace the country's rich history. The museum is located in Manama and is one of the largest and oldest museums in the country.

The design of the building in which the museum is located reflects traditional Bahraini architecture. Here you will find galleries featuring artefacts and exhibits on Bahraini history, including a display of ancient artefacts from the Dilmun civilisation, which dates back to the third millennium BC.

One of the oldest and most popular markets in Bahrain, Manama Souq is renowned for its lively atmosphere and colourful stalls full of different goods for every taste. The Souk is a tangle of narrow alleyways and streets with shops offering a variety of goods including traditional clothing, spices, perfumes and more.

The souk is famous among visitors and locals in Bahrain for its gold market, where impressive gold jewellery in both traditional and modern designs can be purchased. In addition to gold, you will also find a textile section where you can buy beautiful fabrics and clothes.

The wonder of water is even more marked amid the majesty of the desert sands. This oceanside lake is a great place to stroll, sit with a coffee, enjoy a meal or visit the shops and other sights. Visiting the park is one of the best things to do in Bahrain for families – many attractions here are aimed at kids. In winter, you’ll be drawn outside to enjoy the cool evening breezes and the myriad lights reflecting off the lagoon.

Where: Amwaj Islands

Bahrain is a paradise for water sports and strapping into the Jetovator – a kind of flying water-propelled bike – is one of the most unique thrills you can have anywhere in the world. Flying 40ft in the air on a jet of water, doing acrobatics if you feel up to it or just taking in the view, this is a thrill of a lifetime.

Muharraq Island is full of historic houses, including the spectacular Beit Sheikh Isa Bin Ali Al Khalifa. Built around 1800, it is probably the oldest house in Bahrain and was once the ruler’s residence and the centre of government.

Now open to the public, the elegant two-storey building is also home to the Ethnographic Museum which takes up a whole city block. Its thick mud walls, shaded courtyards and wind tower show how the residents of Bahrain adapted to the hot climate before air-conditioning.

Al Dar Island is a small uninhabited island off the coast of Bahrain. A boat trip to the island is one of the most popular things to do in Bahrain, thanks to the island's lovely beaches and relaxed atmosphere. You can take a boat trip to the island from various locations in Bahrain, including the capital Manama. The trip usually takes about 30-45 minutes and offers stunning views of Bahrain's coastline and surrounding islands.

On Al Dar Island itself, there are plenty of beach activities to suit all tastes. Visitors can either just relax on the beach or choose from a variety of water sports, including jet-skiing and kayaking. Because the island is surrounded by coral reefs, snorkelling and diving are also popular activities.

If you're in search of an escape from bustling city life, a trip to the Hawar Islands is one of the great things to do in Bahrain for a secluded quiet holiday. The Hawar Islands, a group of small islands off the coast of Bahrain, are known for their pristine beaches and diverse marine life.

Several operators in Bahrain offer boat tours by boat. The trip to the islands usually takes about an hour and offers spectacular views of the Persian Gulf and the neighbouring islands.
