Jakarta: 7 Things You Just Can’t Miss – Jakarta Travel Blog

Jakarta 6 Things You Just Can't Miss

From great hotels and delicious food, to the city’s best malls, this Jakarta travel blog is packed full of the best things to do in Jakarta.

Before I left the UK, I’d heard a lot of people say Jakarta wasn’t worth stopping in. It sounded commercial and lacking in that Indonesian charm that draws people to the likes of Borobudur and Bali . But I wondered whether that was because people hadn’t found the right places yet. Perhaps there was more to it, just waiting to be discovered?

With just a few days there I headed off in search culture, food and the city’s heart and soul!

Jakarta: Visit The National Monument

The tall, needle-like structure of Jakarta’s National Monument (known as Monas) was incredibly impressive, particularly against the bright blue September sky. The 132-metre tower was constructed to represent Indonesia’s struggle for independence. Nestling on top, a flame covered in gold. We watched as a tourist train took people around the perimeter of the main square, while up a few steps, people queued to enter the museum and viewing platform.

My resounding memory of visiting? “Selfie mister, selfie missus!” It seemed that the Indonesian visitors didn’t see tourists like us very often, and we were asked for photo after photo!

Jakarta: Visit Kota

Head to Jakarta’s old town (known as Kota or Old Batavia) and you’ll discover some of the city’s beauty. In the 1600s the British and Dutch fought to take control of the city. The Dutch won and made it the capital of the Dutch East Indies. Today, the Dutch colonial vibes are still present in the form of a canal system and some traditional Dutch houses.

Kota’s highlight is Fatahillah Square. The large pedestrianised square is lined with cafes, street food carts and performers, but most popular are the bicycles. The bright, colourful bikes come with matching hats, and the idea is you cycle around the square enjoying the novelty!

I’d recommend booking onto a guided tour like this one of Old Batavia, so you can learn all about the area and understand the area’s significance.

Check latest prices and availability for the Old Batavia tour here

Jakarta: Street Food

While Jakarta is home to several very fine restaurants ( OKU Jakarta , Salt Grill by Luke Mangan , and E&O to name a few) I’d recommend heading out and exploring the city’s street food scene.

Indonesian food is really flavoursome, and the most popular dishes sate (meat skewers served with peanut sauce), nasi goreng (fried rice usually with chicken and vegetables), mie goreng (fried noodles with chicken and vegetables) and soto ayam (chicken soup often with noodles).

Jalan Haji Agus Salim (a street near Wahid Hasyim) is a great place to start. It’s packed with locals and as you’re eating, you’ll be entertained by a range of musicians who perform for the crowds.

Jakarta: Shopping Malls

One of the top things to do in Jakarta is visit one of the huge malls. While I’ve never rocked up in a new city and thought “I can’t wait to go shopping,” it just happened I needed to pick up a few things.

As malls go, the  Grand Indonesia Mall was very impressive – several floors packed with big brands (from H&M and Zara to Topshop). It had a great food court serving mostly Indonesian cuisine along with a few Western outlets (fried chicken anyone?!) Prices within the mall varied, but items in H&M were around 15% cheaper than in the UK.

Jakarta: Nightlife

When I visited Jakarta, I wasn’t looking for nightclubs, but I’ve always enjoyed a few drinks in the evening. Totally by accident I stumbled across The Awan Lounge – a beautiful roof bar on Wahid Hasim. With views of the city skyline, a live DJ, and a cool, jungle vibe, it was a great place to sip on a mojito and reflect on the day.

  View. Lensed by Chef @eddriantjhia #KosendaHotel #AwanLounge #garden #rooftop A photo posted by KOSENDA HOTEL (@kosendahotel) on Jun 11, 2016 at 5:37am PDT

Just a few minutes away was Jaya Pub – Jakarta’s oldest pub, and somewhere I’d read about before arriving. The pub hosts live bands every night, serves beer towers and a great cocktail menu. The atmosphere was really fun and the bands encourage you to toot one of the horns hanging from the ceiling if you’re having a good night! I also loved the cheeky signs around the bar.

Jakarta: Take A Tour Of Chinatown

I loved the variety of cultures and experiences in Jakarta. I’d recommend taking time to visit Chinatown. Known as Glodok, it’s the biggest Chinatown in Indonesia. It’s steeped in amazing tradition, is home to a fantastic market and great for foodies too.

If you fancy visiting, I’d recommend a walking tour. The locals know all the best foodie spots, plus they’ll explain more about the historic and cultural significance of the area.

Jakarta: Accommodation

There’s somewhere to suit every budget in Jakarta, and rather than stay in hostels (which can be quite badly maintained), I read it was best to look at hotels and B&Bs. The city has plenty of luxury hotels – perfect for unwinding after a busy day exploring the city.

Hotel Borobudur Jakarta is a five star hotel in the centre of Jakarta. Close to the Presidential Palace and the malls, and with a huge pool, luxury spa and gym, it’s a great base for your stay in the city.

Find out more about Hotel Borobudur Jakarta and check out these Traveloka hotel deals now.

Jakarta surprised me a lot. It was easy to see how it could be overlooked, but it felt ‘real’. This was a city designed for the people, not for tourists, and that, right there, was where its charm lay.

Enjoyed this post? Why not pin it…

“Anywhere else, aside from Jakarta?”

This was the reply I would usually get whenever I said I was going to the Indonesian capital. “No, just Jakarta,” was my answer. And it took them a second to realize that they heard my response right.

Jakarta feels strangely familiar. There is so much about it that reminds me of Metro Manila, my home city. Both are capital cities of developing Southeast Asian nations. Both are among the biggest urban hubs in the world, serving as a home and/or workplace for tens of millions of people. And for many international tourists, both are seen mostly as a jump-off point to another destination, a necessary means to a more spectacular end. In Jakarta’s case, this spectacular end can be the beaches of Bali , the temples of Yogyakarta , or the picturesque volcanoes in other parts of Java.

But like Manila, Jakarta can hold its own. It may not be as Instagram-worthy, but it does have a long history and rich culture, making it a great stop for Indonesia first timers. From the numerous museums to the sumptuous street food, the city will give you a taste of what the world’s greatest archipelago has to offer.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING JAKARTA

Jakarta is the capital of and the largest city in Indonesia. Located in the island of Java, the city serves as the economic, political, and cultural center of the country. Jakarta is sprawling. Over the years, as it continues to draw in more people, it also paves way for the development of neighboring areas.

Jakarta Sign

Today, Jakarta may also refer to the Greater Jakarta area or the Jakarta metropolitan area, which is also called locally as Jabodetabek , short for Jakarta–Bogor–Depok–Tangerang–Bekasi, referring to the nearby cities in West Java and Banten. And with an estimated population of 35 million, it is the second largest urban hub in the world, next only to Tokyo.

The history of Jakarta dates back to the 4th century CE, making it one of the oldest inhabited cities in Southeast Asia. It has been known by several names. Under the Sunda Kingdom, it was known as Sunda Kelapa, an important trading port at the time. In 1619, the Dutch took control and founded Batavia which became the capital of the Dutch East Indies. Then in 1942, Batavia fell to the Japanese and was under the Japanese occupation until 1945. It was 1949 when the Indonesian independence was proclaimed and Jakarta became the national capital.

WHERE TO STAY IN JAKARTA

Jakarta is huge. Covering 664.01 square kilometers, Jakarta is divided it into its five administrative cities: Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, East Jakarta, North Jakarta, and South Jakarta. Easy to remember, right? But these three areas have the key points of interest for tourists:

The Packer Lodge Jakarta

  • Central Jakarta is home to major landmarks like the National Monument and Istiqlal Mosque. Also situated here is Gambir Station, a major railway station that connects the capital to other cities in Java Island. You’ll also find Grand Indonesia, one of the biggest malls in the country, around the corner. A large concentration of the accommodations in Central Jakarta can be found in Menteng .
  • North Jakarta covers the harbor area, the historic port of Sunda Kelapa, and Ancol, a waterfront complex with a theme park, water park, and other various attractions.
  • West Jakarta , the closest to the airport, roughly 30 minutes away. Within its territory lie parts of Kota Tua, Jakarta’s Old Town. Glodok , Jakarta’s Chinatown, where you can find a lot of food spots, is also here. A number of different types of accommodations are spread over West Jakarta.
  • South Jakarta , which harbors the Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD), with plenty of office buildings, condominiums, hotels, and shopping malls. If you’re interested in experiencing the nightlife in Jakarta, this is the place to be. The accommodations in this area varies from high-end hotels to budget hostels so there are a lot to choose from.
  • East Jakarta . This is the largest among the five administrative cities of Jakarta. However, there’s not a lot of accommodations available here. It is also the area farthest from the airport.

Best Area to Stay

In our opinion, the best area to stay is the part where Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, and North Jakarta meet. Staying here puts you in a position close to the key attractions and with plenty of dining and lodging options.

This area includes these neighborhoods:

Best Area to Stay in Jakarta

  • Glodok (Chinatown) in West Jakarta
  • Menteng in Central Jakarta
  • Kota Tua in North/West Jakarta

Any of places above are great for first-time Jakarta visitors. However, if you’re the type of traveler who likes to spend their nights going out or partying, South Jakarta might be a great option too. Just keep in mind that this area is a bit farther from other parts of the city, especially if you plan to visit attractions in North Jakarta.

Top Budget Hotels and Hostels in Jakarta

I booked a dorm bed at The Packer Lodge near Kota Tua for only PHP 450 per night . Yep, that’s only USD 8 or 124,000 IDR. But by random streak of good luck, I was upgraded to a private solo room for FREE! (Possibly because they might have overbooked the dorm.)

How to get to jakarta.

The primary airport that serves Jakarta is Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) , formerly called Jakarta Cengkareng Airport. It is located at Benda, Tangerang, close to West Jakarta. It was expanded in 1991 to replace Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport, which now services mostly domestic and private flights—for international flights. CGK is said to be the busiest airport in Southeast Asia and currently has 3 terminals with a fourth terminal being built.

Jakarta Airport

Manila to Jakarta

As Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta is well-connected. If you’re coming from Manila, Cebu Pacific flies directly to Jakarta and vice versa DAILY. The flight departs from Manila at 8:40 PM and takes around four hours. This is perfect for busy bees who cannot afford to file another leave of absence from work or students who can’t miss a school day. This also means you arrive in Jakarta just before midnight, bypassing heavy traffic to the city center.

For your return journey, Cebu Pacific’s Jakarta-Manila flights are scheduled at 12:30 AM, allowing you to make the most of your last day in Jakarta! Just leave your luggage temporarily at your hotel upon checkout, explore the city the entire day, and pick it up before heading to the airport.

Manila to Jakarta Cebu Pacific

Cebu Pacific has three bundle options for your flight booking: GO Basic comes with a free hand-carry baggage allowance (7kg). If you want a checked bag and reserved seats, GO Easy includes a one piece checked baggage (up to 20kg) and a standard seat. For more flexibility, GO Flexi allows you to cancel your flight for free and store the value as a travel fund.

To book, visit: www.cebupacificair.com .

Jakarta Airport to City Center

Travel time from the airport to your hotel depends on which part of Jakarta you choose to stay, but it could take between 30 minutes to an hour. The most convenient way is by taking a taxi or using a ride hailing app. More details about these below.

Countless taxis await potential passengers at the airport. After going through customs and before reaching the exit, you’ll be welcomed by people offering you taxi services. If you want to take a taxi, a recommended taxi service by locals is Blue Bird . You’ll find a Blue Bird booth to your left after you exit, near the SIM card stores.

However, in my experience, their rate was higher than Grab, but this could vary. You can go to the booth to inquire about the fare going to your hotel and compare it to rates on Grab or Gojek.

By Grab or Gojek

Jakarta Airport Grab Pickup Point

These two are the ride hailing apps available in Jakarta. It is easy to use and booking a ride only takes a few minutes. The Grab pick-up point in Terminal 3 is located at the parking of the arrival area. After you pass through customs, turn to your right and head towards the Pick-up zone. You should be exiting through the West Lobby door. At the parking, you will find signage for the Grab Pick-up Point.

It is important to know that the fare that shows on the app is not the final fare. A parking fee and highway fee or toll fee will be added on top of it. This was also clearly communicated by the person at the Grab Pick-up point once I got there and the driver after I entered the car. But the Grab fare still turned out cheaper than the Blue Bird rate even after adding these fees.

  • Parking Fee: IDR 5,000
  • Highway/toll fee: IDR 18,500

Gojek is also available at the airport. The pick-up point at Terminal 3 is also located at the international parking area. Gojek also adds the parking fee & toll fee plus a location fee on top of the fare that shows on the app when you book your ride.

Internet Connection / Data SIM in Jakarta

The most affordable way of staying connected in Indonesia is by purchasing a data SIM card. However, SIM cards in Jakarta need to be registered first, so you’ll need to present your passport to get one. Two of the most popular internet providers are XL Axiata and Telkomsel.

You can get a SIM card at the airport, but keep in mind that the prices here are significantly higher than prices at a telco branch or SIM card center. Moreover, airport stores are open only from 7:00AM to 3:00AM.

If you’re from any of the countries below, you can have the data SIM card delivered to you via Klook:

  • Deliver SIM to INDIA
  • Deliver to SINGAPORE
  • Deliver SIM to HONG KONG
  • Deliver SIM to VIETNAM

If you’re from the Philippines or any other country, you may opt to pick up Indonesia DATA SIM at the Jakarta Airport (Soekarno Hatta International Airport). The pick up location is at the JavaMifi booth at Terminal 3 Departure at the 2nd floor. The staff will also help you set up the sim card on your phone. However, the operating hours is from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM only. You can purchase one here: Indonesia DATA SIM Jakarta Airport Pickup!

If you’re arriving in Jakarta late at night, you won’t be able to avail of this since their registration has a cut-off time. Another option to consider is Grapari , the SIM card center of the telecommunications company Telkomsel . They have multiple locations all over Jakarta. If you want to save and you can manage to go from the airport without data, just look up the Grapari branch closest to your hotel. More info on its website .

HOW TO GET AROUND JAKARTA

Jakarta is a very busy city and there are various transportation options available. There are a lot of taxis all over the city and you can also use ride hailing apps. Commuting is also an option since they have an efficient public bus transportation called Transjakarta . However, because it is a busy city, the traffic gets heavy especially during rush hours.

If you’re visiting attractions, some of them are within walking distance from each other. You can walk from The National Monument to see Merdeka Palace, and then walk to the National Museum. You can also explore Kota Tua or the Old Town on foot. You can choose from the following mode of transportations to explore Indonesia’s capital depending on your budget and preferences.

There are a lot of taxis around the city. In some areas there are cabs lined up by the side of the road so you don’t have to hail a cab on the street anymore. The suggested reliable taxi company in Jakarta is Blue Bird . Their units are easy to spot because they’re, well, blue.

Riding a taxi may pose a challenge because of language barrier since not everyone speaks and understands English. But what you can do is write down the address of your destination or find it on Google Maps, and show it to the driver when you take a taxi. You may also ask your hotel to call a taxi for you and ask them for help to communicate your destination to the driver.

By Grab or GoJek

Grab Bike Motorcycles Jakarta

  • Car. If you want a more convenient mode of transportation, book a Grab or Gojek. It is more simple since all you need to do is pin your pick-up location and destination on the app and wait for your car to arrive. You may also pay using credit card or cash when using ride hailing apps.
  • Motorcycle. This is the best way to beat the traffic in Jakarta. If you’re traveling solo, Grab and GoJek also have a motorcycle/bike option. The motorcycle is also much cheaper compared to the car option. So if you’re on a budget, this is a great option to get from one place to another quicker and at a less price.

By Transjakarta Bus

Taking public transportation is the cheapest option. Each ride costs only IDR 3,500 no matter where your destination is. The bus is very efficient since there are 13 lines and over 200 stations all over the city. You may use Google maps to know which bus line you should take and where you should get off to reach your destination.

Jakarta by Bus

Here’s how you can ride the Transjakarta buses:

  • Purchase a Transjakarta Card at a convenience store. These cards are available at any Indomaret, Alfamart, and other convenience stores in Jakarta. Each card costs IDR 27,500.
  • Top up your card at the digital kiosk at any station. You may also top-up your card when you purchase it at a convenience store, but their minimum amount is IDR 50,000 while you can top up as low as P10,000 at the station.
  • Tap your bus card on the ticket barrier at the station to enter.
  • Tap again to exit the station where you’ll get off.

Riding the bus can take much longer compared to the taxi, car service, or motorcycle taxi. You can look up your destination on Google maps and compare the travel time for each and decide from there depending on your time and budget.

Where to exchange currencies in Jakarta?

I’ve only tried a couple of money changers along Gajah Mada near Glodok. They are open until late night and there’s one that is open for 24 hours. DollarIndo and Primatama have the same or very similar rates, which are pretty good.

JAKARTA TRAVEL TIPS AND REMINDERS FOR FIRST-TIMERS

  • Weather in Jakarta is most of the time hot and humid. It is suggested that you wear light and breathable clothes , but not too revealing. Also, don't forget to bring light jacket, umbrella or raincoat for occasional rains.
  • Since you'll be walking a lot during tours, wear comfortable shoes or sandals .
  • When visiting places of worship such as mosques, do not wear tank tops (or other sleeveless shirts), see-through shirts, or shorts. Before traveling to Indonesia, be sure to pack your bags with clothes appropriate when visiting a mosque . For men, it is important to wear long trousers or pants, short-sleeved shirts are okay. Women should cover their hair and arms, ankle-length skirts or pants are required. Always take off your shoes before entering a mosque.
  • In Indonesia, always use your right hand . For example, when paying for what you bought, or receiving the items you bought. The left hand is considered "unclean" and using it is also considered "disrespectful." Always use your right hand when dealing with the locals.
  • Giving tips or gratuities are fairly a common practice in Indonesia. A reward of 5 - 10% of the total bill or of the total amount of service rendered is good enough. Sometimes, when eating in restaurants, service charge is already included, so you don't need to leave extra tip.
  • The power plugs and sockets in Indonesia are of type C ("Euro" plug) and type F ("Schuko"). The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz. Don't forget to bring a Universal Adapter Plug so you could charge your gadgets. If you forgot to bring one, ask the reception of your hotel if you could borrow an adapter plug.
  • To save on travel expenses, I recommend booking discounted tickets, tours, and activities in Jakarta at Klook.com, join group tours, take the bus or the train, walk if you can, stay in hostels or budget hotels, and take advantage of flight seat sales and promos on flights from Manila to Jakarta .

#1 – Kota Tua – A perfect place to visit in Jakarta if you’re on a budget

Kota Tua

The Broke Backpacker is supported by you . Clicking through our links may earn us a small affiliate commission, and that's what allows us to keep producing free content 🙂 Learn more .

  • Explore Jakarta’s colonial downtown
  • Find some street food hot spots in Jakarta
  • Check out some interesting and unusual museums

Why it’s awesome: Kota Tua is Jakarta’s Old Town, and it’s normally the first stop for tourists and travellers in town. This is hardly surprising – the oldest and most historic buildings from the Dutch colonial era are found here! The city’s original downtown contains Dutch-style squares and plenty of history to uncover. At the turn of the century, the buildings were rapidly deteriorating, but many have been restored since and the area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014. Explore the architecture and cool street food spots either on foot or by bike!

What to do there: Not sure how to see Jakarta’s Old Town? Well, a good place to start is Fatahillah Square. This is slap bang in the middle of Kota Tua (what was once known as Old Batavia). Around the square, there are plenty of museums where you can absorb Jakarta’s colonial history or find some quirky exhibitions. Many are low priced, and some are completely free! Highly recommended are the Jakarta History Museum and Fine Arts and Ceramics Museum, which are both self-explanatory. The Wayang Museum shows off Javanese puppets and dolls!

#2 – Merdeka Square – A great place to visit in Jakarta if you’re travelling solo!

Merdeka Square

  • Take a break from Jakarta’s traffic and chill
  • Stroll around one of the largest public squares in the world
  • Surrounded by some of the coolest landmarks in Jakarta

Why it’s awesome: If you’re travelling solo and you want to make some friends in Jakarta, you’re bound to come across someone at Merdeka Square. After all, it’s one of the largest public squares in the world and it’s where the locals come to escape the city’s hustle and bustle. Not to mention the stifling traffic, which is seemingly always gridlocked! The square is centered around the National Monument, standing at 132 metres high. There’s an interesting museum at the base, but if you’re unafraid of heights and want some great pictures then head to the observation deck at the top!

What to do there: As well as chilling in the square and visiting the national monument, there’s plenty to do. Some of the most important points of interest in Jakarta surround Merdeka Square. You’ll find the National Gallery, the Merdeka and Negara Palaces, and the National Museum, which we’ll tell you more about later! Even with all these cool attractions, nothing beats escaping from busy Jakarta life and relaxing in the shade with your travel companion or alone with a book, watching the world go by! On weekend evenings, don’t miss the spectacular fountain show complete with lights and music.

#3 – Taman Mini Indonesia Indah – A very cool place to go in Jakarta for a day!

Taman Mini Indonesia Indah

  • Explore full-scale house models from all over Indonesia
  • Let the kids choose between the water park and the space exploration museum!
  • One of the best places in Jakarta to spend a whole day

Why it’s awesome: Running low on Jakarta vacation ideas? Head here, where they’ve thought of literally everything. The park’s name literally translates to Beautiful Indonesia Miniature Park. The only thing they forgot was huge – it covers a massive area. But of course, it has to as it packs in parks, an IMAX cinema, a water park, and that’s just for starters! This is the perfect place to go for the day with the family, or simply to have a quirky and relaxed adventure.

What to do there: Where to start! Get a dose of Indonesian culture by exploring the models of traditional houses from around the country. You can also take home some cool souvenirs, as there’s a traditional handicraft market which sells clothing too! Then, move on to a mini re-creation of one of Indonesia’s most important temples, Borobodur. Find somewhere to have a tasty and traditional lunch then head to the atrium in the afternoon, which houses 760 native birds! If you’re still there in the evening (and why wouldn’t you be), head to one of the regional houses for a free traditional performance!

#4 – Glodok Chinatown – A must-see for foodies!

Glodok Chinatown Jakarta

  • Explore one of the street food hotspots in Jakarta
  • Visit the Chinese temples of the area
  • Head to one of Jakarta’s largest shopping centres.

Why it’s awesome: Glodok may not be the most tourist-friendly destination, but it is home to some of the best places to eat in Jakarta. In our book, that definitely makes it worth a visit. Indonesian street food has a mishmash of influences, and one of the most important is Chinese. It’s in Glodok that you’ll find a number of street food stalls along the narrow pavements, as well as a range of Chinese restaurants which range from dingy and quiet to upmarket! It’s hard not to find something delicious here.

What to do there: Eat, eat, eat! Whether it’s grilled pork, fried duck, or delicious satay sauce, you’ll find something to keep you sated. It’s not all about food in Glodok though. The area is home to a number of quiet and peaceful temples, which don’t have anywhere near the number of crowds as some of the more popular religious sites in Jakarta. They’re a great place to relax and contemplate away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Glodok is close to Kota Tua, so you can easily combine both in a day trip if you fancy!

#5 – Dunia Fantasi (Ancol Dreamland) – Awesome place to visit in Jakarta with kids!

Dunia Fantasi

  • Take the kids to this internationally themed amusement park
  • Get views of Jakarta Bay from the top of rollercoasters
  • Jakarta must-do for the whole family

Why it’s awesome: Sometimes cultural attractions can get a bit tiresome and heavy when you’re travelling with kids, so why not mix it up and head to one of the most fun places in Jakarta – Ancol Dreamland! It’ll put a face on the smile of the little ones with spinning teacups and Hello Kitty Dreamland, while even the surliest teen will have their indifferent frown re-arranged by the Hysteria vertical thrill ride! There are 9 new attractions planned at the time of writing (2019) so it’s only going to get better by the time you arrive!

What to do there: First thing to do in the theme park is make a plan of the rides you don’t want to miss and head to them first. You don’t want to spend the day stuck in queues! As Jakarta can get hot and humid, we highly recommend the log flume ride to cool off. It’s not all about rides at this cool internationally inspired theme park though. Head to Ancient Greece or Ancient Egypt without leaving the Indonesian capital and admire these fantastic recreations! When you fancy something a little more relaxed, see movies about Beautiful Indonesia at the on-site Kalila Adventure Animatronic theatre!

#6 – National Museum – A fascinating educational place to visit in Jakarta

National Museum

  • Learn about every aspect of Indonesian culture
  • Over 100,000 pieces exhibiting this country’s rich heritage
  • One of the major points of interest in Jakarta

Why it’s awesome: Just across from Merdeka Square is where you’ll find one of the most impressive and important museums in South East Asia – the National Museum of Indonesia. Don’t miss the beautiful elephant statue in the courtyard (it’s kind of hard to if you go in really), which gives it the name it’s known among locals – the Elephant building. The museum collection consists of more than 100,000 articles. These relate to art, agriculture, languages, and religion of the national and regional history of Indonesia. An unmissable Jakarta attraction!

What to do there: If you want to learn about the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia, there’s nowhere better to go. Visit the top floor to see the impressive jewels and precious metal artifacts that belonged to the archipelago’s rajahs and sultans. If you’d prefer to go further back in time, visit the exhibition of batik cloths from the 1 st century AD which has been beautifully preserved! You can also find exhibits dedicated to the 700+ languages spoken across the island chain, a great way to find out more about local life.

#7 – Istiqlal Mosque – One of the most religious places to see in Jakarta!

Istiqlal Mosque

  • Visit the biggest mosque in South East Asia
  • Take a guided tour and learn more about the architecture and symbols
  • One of the most famous places in Jakarta

Why it’s awesome: Indonesia has freedom of religion, but the majority of one of the largest populations on earth follow Islam. In fact, almost 90% of the country’s 260 million population are Muslim! So, it’s fitting that you can find the largest mosque in South East Asia in Jakarta, and the 3 rd largest in the world then. It can fit 20,000 people more than Barcelona’s Camp Nou football stadium. You can find Istiqlal Mosque just a stone’s throw away from Merdeka Square and opposite Jakarta’s Catholic cathedral.

What to do there: Istiqlal Mosque is open to the public and it’s possible to take a guided tour. This comes highly recommended as it enables you to learn more about Islam and also admire the intricate symbols and architecture. The designs not only reflect the principles of Islam but also represent scenes from Indonesian history too. A visit to the mosque can be tied in with a visit to Jakarta’s other Historical House of Worship, and the attractions which surround Merdeka Square.

#8 – Suropati Park

Suropati Park

  • Escape the humidity for a natural and fresh breeze
  • Enjoy the mix of nature, art, and city life
  • A great place to meet cats when visiting Jakarta!

Why it’s awesome: Originally beginning as a village green surrounded by mansions in the fancy Menteng residence, Suropati Park is now a favourite spot of tourists and locals alike who want to escape the traffic and noise of the concrete jungle. This is a great place to spend a lazy day after you’ve visited some of the busier landmarks in Jakarta. Lay down on the grass and pet one of the park’s many cats, or listen to the music being made by groups of local friends on their acoustic guitars!

What to do there: As with most parks, there’s plenty of choices depending on how active you want to be! If you’ve got a workout regime you’re planning on keeping up during your holiday, this is a great spot for jogging or running. However, since it can get so hot and humid, we’d recommend avoiding it at midday! For a more relaxed morning or afternoon, check out the ASEAN monuments donated from neighbouring South East Asian countries!

#9 – Jalan Jaksa

Jalan Jaksa

  • Explore Jakarta’s backpacker hub
  • Enjoy a mix of street food, cool cafes, and a variety of accommodation
  • Just a short walk from the best places in Jakarta

Why it’s awesome: Now is a great time to head to Jalan Jaksa. It used to be full of flophouses and old rickety hostels, but the process of gentrification has brought it up to speed without losing its charm and character. If you’re travelling in Jakarta on a budget, it’s probably where you’re going to end up – and you’re probably going to love it! The area is about 1km south of the National Museum and Merdeka Square, so it’s easy enough to walk or take public transport to see some of the top landmarks in Jakarta!

What to do there: Eat, sleep, and be merry. Jalan Jaksa is the perfect area to meet new friends if you’re travelling solo since there are so many bars and cool hostels. It’s a great base for visiting the city too. You can easily get to pretty much all of the other locations on our list on foot, and the ones you can’t just a cheap journey away on public transport. If you’re planning any day trips from Jakarta, pop around the corner to Gongdangdia Station. This connects you to Jakarta’s main station where the island of Java is your oyster!

#10 – Babakan Lake and the Betawi Cultural Village

Babakan Lake and the Betawi Cultural Village

  • Learn about the indigenous Betawi Culture
  • Take a paddleboat out onto the lake
  • One of the best natural landmarks in Jakarta

Why it’s awesome: Another perfect spot to escape from Jakarta’s hustle and bustle. Not only that, you can experience a traditional cultural village and learn about the indigenous way of life in Jakarta’s surroundings. Setu Babakan (Babakan Lake) is actually the centre of the village. This is probably best recommended as a day trip as it takes about an hour and a half to get to the village on public transport. Located in Southern Jakarta, it’s more than 20km from Merdeka Square – but that shouldn’t put you off!

What to do there: It depends when you visit really. All through the year, you’ll be able to appreciate the traditional architecture of the houses and buildings here. You can also enjoy regular performances featuring dance, music, and masks celebrating Betawi heritage. Each Sunday, there are regular cultural performances. You can also head out onto the calm waters of the lake in one of the cool bird-shaped pedalos, or in a canoe. If you’d prefer to just view, you can do that from under the shade of papaya, banana, and rambutan trees!

Short on time and want to see as much as possible? Check out our  3-day itinerary for Jakarta , and plan your trip before visiting!

#11 – Ancol Beach City – A great place in Jakarta if you love to shop!

Ancol Beach City

  • Take part in FREE watersports!
  • Shop till you drop at one of Jakarta’s biggest malls
  • Great place to take the family

Why it’s awesome: The shopping and entertainment complex on the shores of Jakarta Bay is one of the best places in Jakarta for a fun day out. Spend the morning enjoying some retail therapy at a range of local and international shops, before taking part in some free water sports in the afternoon. So, if you’re visiting Jakarta on a budget this is the perfect spot for some adrenaline-fuelled activities! Try out jet-skiing, banana boats, and for something a little more chilled, the Ancol Beach cruise!

What to do there: Shopping and water sports isn’t quite enough? It’s lucky that there’s more going on here then, isn’t it?! The shopping centre also has a concert stadium which has hosted multiple international stars. If you’re feeling really brave, put your name forward for karaoke on the beach… don’t worry, it’s not at the concert stadium! Whatever you fancy doing, you’re sure to find plenty of Jakarta vacation ideas in this place alone!

Jakarta Travel Itinerary: 2-Day Trip

This 2-day Jakarta itinerary is all you need to travel there and make the most of your little time in Jakarta.

When it comes to the popular tourist destinations in Indonesia, Jakarta, despite being the capital city, holds no place — not even among the top 5 destinations in the country. (Search on Google and you won’t find many blogs suggesting a Jakarta travel itinerary either).

But with most international flights first landing at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, many people, before making it to their original destination, end up in Jakarta.

So, if you too end up in Jakarta, and decided to travel around, follow this 2-Day Jakarta Itinerary. This short but interesting Jakarta travel itinerary will make you cover most of the popular tourist highlights.

Also, if you are travelling from India to Jakarta, you may be interested in reading my review of Cathay Pacific economy class . If, however, you are not an economy class flier, check this review of Singapore Airlines’ business class experience . Though I have travelled with many international airlines from India to Southeast Asia, including Flyscoot , Air Asia, Malindo Air, and others, it is Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines that remain my favorites.

Now let’s continue with our Jakarta travel itinerary blog and see what this popular Asia destination for Indians , has to offer…

Jakarta travel itinerary

2-Day Jakarta Travel Itinerary

During my recent blog trip with Indonesia Tourism, I ended up following this Jakarta travel itinerary exploring the town for 4 days. And as I did, I realized that it was actually a beautiful place and had much more to offer than what most people expect. It is much more than a bustling metropolis. There are theme parks, temples, shopping malls, museums and even a cluster of gorgeous islands located just a one-hour speedboat ride away.

So out of many different experiences, these are a few handpicked ones I would recommend you fit into your Jakarta itinerary.

Note: I recommend you stay for at least 2 days and complete this Jakarta travel itinerary so that when you go back to your country you can tell your friends that you have seen a bit of the town and a part of the thousand islands. For a suggestion, Manhattan Hotel Jakarta is a great place to stay (we will speak about it later in the article).

Jakarta itinerary

Day 1 Jakarta Itinerary

Spend the entire day at the thousand islands.

I know it is only natural to feel tempted to explore the town as you arrive there and not escape from it, I always prefer a slow and relaxing first day in a new country, and that’s what a trip to the islands can offer you: a moment to relax and unwind. So we start our Jakarta itinerary with an island visit.

Jakarta travel itinerary

For those who don’t know, the Thousand Islands is basically a cluster of nearly 350 islands stretching 45 km north into the Java Sea.  Out of these nearly 350 islands, over 30 islands are privately owned, with many of them now having a resort (or building one) and catering to tourists. The rest of the islands are either uninhabited or being used for fishing.

Now, there are quite a few options in the Thousand Islands for a day trip from Jakarta (or for spending a night on the island there) but if I were to suggest a place, I can suggest the island of Pulau Macan. Privately owned, like other islands in the Thousand Islands, the Pulau Macan island is a tiny one-hectare island perfect for those who are looking for a quick escape.

Jakarta itinerary

For those who like a bit of movement, there is also enough to see and do on the island, including kayaking or a stand-up paddle-boarding; playing in-house games like table tennis or chess, or doing nothing but eating amazing tropical food and relaxing on hammock the entire day. It is also possible to get a snorkel and explore some amazing coral life located no more than 20 feet from the island.

what to see in Jakarta

It is also possible to spend a night on the island or do a day trip, and since you’re short on time, I suggest a day trip to Pulau Macan .

To get to Pulau Macan, get to Ancol Marina from Pier number 17 at around 8 in the morning and you can book a speedboat right then and there. Alternatively, book a speedboat or a bigger Yacht online. The journey to Pulau Macan takes between 1.5 to 2 hours on one side as you sail through most of the Thousand Islands region.

speed boat

If you book through an agent, as we did (with Sheila Tours) you get a return boat journey, a few snacks on the boat, a buffet lunch at the island and free use of the kayak and snorkel, which I found was a pretty good deal for a price of 1,000,000 Indonesian Rupiah per person (nearly USD 70) on weekends, and a little less during weekdays.

Enjoy some amazing home-cooked meals of rice, seafood, vegetables, and fruits and spend most of the time of the day relaxing and exploring the island life in Indonesia before you head back to Jakarta. Once you are back, make your day evening special with some seafood at Jimbaran restaurant in Ancol.

Dinner At Jimbaran Restaurant In Ancol

Though for a vegetarian and the usual meat-eaters, Jimbaran is not much of a place of interest, if you’re a seafood lover, you are going to love the place. But personally speaking, it wasn’t the seafood or any other delicacy that I loved Jimbaran so much, but the ambience.

dining out

Think of it as a superb dining experience while watching the sunset on a white sandy beach. Jimbaran is one of the rare places in Indonesia (and they have a restaurant in Bali too) which provides you with this wonderful opportunity.

jakarta culture music

What makes the experience better is some music and traditional live performances.

Day 2 Jakarta Itinerary

Start with a tour of national museum.

Despite not being a big fan of museums, I personally feel that museums are an important places to visit because they help us understand a country’s history and people better. And that’s why I suggest visiting the National Museum of Indonesia. Filled with sculptures and reminisces of Hinduism and Buddhism, the museum gives an in-depth introduction to Indonesia’s true past.

Jakarta travel itinerary

Unlike other museums, the National Museum of Jakarta appeared fairly small and it was possible to scan thoroughly in just a couple of hours. But despite its size, the museum held an impressive collection of stone Hindu-Buddhist artwork, ancient gold artefacts, some ancient ceramics and even a selection of fossils and ceremonial weaponry. To gain a good insight into Indonesia’s past, there is no finer place to visit.

Next Up, The Neighbourhood Of Kota Tua

I know it may sound a little unreal, but the sprawling metropolis of Jakarta — which is home to nearly 30 million people today — was once only confined to the tiny boundaries of Kota Tua. Yes, I am talking about the time of the Dutch rule in Indonesia, or the time of Batavia. So Kota Tua may just be a historical center of today’s sprawling Jakarta, but back in the day, it was the original Jakarta.

travel destinations

When you’re walking around the streets in Kota Tua, you will be taken back in time, quite literally — with old Dutch-style buildings and newly restored museums looking all fancy and vibrant. It’s possible to spend a day in Kota Tua and not get bored, however, those who are short on time should be able to explore it all and get a few Instagram-worthy pictures in an hour or two.

Jakarta travel

The brightest attraction on the square is going to be those pink and yellow old-school bikes that are available to rent and cruise around the central square.

Lunch At Cafe Batavia

Once done with exploring Kota Tua, head to the iconic Cafe Batavia, which is no less a historic highlight. Housed in an 1830s building, this two-storeyed resto-bar offers a colonial ambience complemented with original-dutch East Indian cuisine. So when you’re in Jakarta, and Kota Tua in particular, lunch at Cafe Batavia is a must.

restaurant jakarta

Again, as an uninterested foodie, I will not talk much about the food, but the ambience. With its tall slatted windows and period colonial-style furniture, Cafe Batavia will certainly carry you back to the splendour of colonial days.

indonesia restaurant

Once done, and if you’ve some more time to spare, visit the Jakarta History Museum located right across from Cafe Batavia. Built in the 17th century as the Town hall in the Dutch VOC colonial era, the History of Jakarta Museum is a place where you can observe artefacts found when Jakarta was still called Sunda Kelapa, also the agreement in stone between the Kingdom of Sunda with the Portuguese.

museum indonesia

A quick stroll inside the museum and exploring painted is totally worth it.

Next Up, Shopping At Thamrin City Trade Mall

You visit Southeast Asia and not the street shop… Not possible! Though as the name suggests, Thamrin City Trade Mall is not an open street market but a massive brick-and-mortar setup, the idea is similar to any street/canopy market where local cheap products are available in abundance and you need to spot what you fancy and later bargain.

indonesia market

The entire place is overwhelmingly massive, with everything, from clothes to electronics to food on display. Thamrin City Mall is also well-known for selling a lot of local products, particularly Batik clothes, at reasonable rates.

You will certainly need at least two hours to explore (just a tiny bit of) the place.

Dinner At Social House, Grand Indonesia

From the outside, Social House may not look like much, but walk in and you’ll find the entire locale pretty photogenic and of course, social! For some reason, it reminded me of those cool cafes we have in Europe where people would come for a casual and some fine dining experience at the same time.

jakarta travel blogs

If you’re looking for a cosy and comfortable place for a family or friends gathering, there cannot be a better place. Their all-day menu serves extensive options of Asian and Western favorites, including sushi, pizza, pasta, tapas, and Wagyu beef burger.

jakarta travel blogs

For drinks to go with your meal, there is a good selection of cocktails, wine and a selection of beers!

Where To Stay: Manhattan Hotel Jakarta

Of course, just like any popular expat city in Southeast Asia Jakarta too has no dearth of accommodation options. From backpacker hostels to something more sophisticated, one can find it all here. But if I were to suggest a place from my experience, I can certainly vouch for the Manhattan Hotel Jakarta. This is where I stayed throughout my time in the city.

Speaking of my room, which didn’t qualify as one of the superior rooms they had, was clean, tidy and equipped with the standard furniture and amenity, including a bathtub with a view.

manhattan hotel jakarta photo

Speaking of the facilities offered by Manhattan Hotel Jakarta, guests can use a gym, swimming pool, sauna and steam all for free.

The hotel also serves a great buffet breakfast including an array of food, dessert, and fruits. But one thing I loved about the hotel the most was its strategic location. Located just next to Kuningan City Mall, the location of Manhattan Hotel, without any doubt, felt like living right in the middle of the city.

Have you been to Jakarta? Do you have anything to add to this Jakarta travel itinerary?

Disclaimer: I visited Indonesia on a blog trip with Indonesia Tourism and Malindo Air. While my trip and experiences were sponsored by them, all recommendations provided above are solely mine. I only recommend what I personally try, and find worth appreciating.

Not Just a Gateway City: Top 10 Places to Visit in Jakarta

Thumbnail

You may have heard that Jakarta has a little bit of a traffic problem (there are actually more cars than people in the city!). But I can assure you it offers so much more, if you’re willing to dedicate some time to discover it!

Many tourists treat the city as merely an entry and exit point to Indonesia. They pass through without a second look, excited to get to their final destination. This is why, if you have some spare time on your hands, we recommend you travel in Jakarta a little before heading out to discover the rest of Indonesia.

And believe us: There are plenty of reasons to visit Jakarta!

Home to over ten million people from all corners of Indonesia and the world, Jakarta is often referred to as “the Big Durian ,” the popular Asian fruit, and is a true melting pot. This city is home to people of various cultures, language backgrounds , and religions. Spend enough time here, and you’ll find influences from Java, Malay, China, the Middle East, India, and Europe.

There are plenty of attractions in Jakarta for you to enjoy, from interesting museums to a variety of national monuments. It’s also a great place to learn more about Indonesia’s complicated history.

Apart from museums and monuments, here you’ll find a wide range of culturally significant locations. These include the old town and the port, both of which can give you an idea of how the city looked in the past.

In this Jakarta travel guide, we’ll look at the city’s top ten places to visit, and how they’ll make your Indonesian adventure even more compelling.

The capital of Indonesia may be crowded, loud, and busy, but it certainly isn’t boring.

Before You Go

Must-see places for a 1-3 day trip, highly recommended places for a 4-7 day trip (or longer), indonesian survival phrases for travelers.

Here are a few tips to make your time in Jakarta much smoother and more rewarding.

The best time to visit Jakarta is definitely during the dry season, between June and September. During these months, you’ll experience perfect tropical temperatures and eleven to twelve hours of light each day.

Be careful if you decide to go between October and January. The city has a typical elevation of eight meters (about twenty-six feet) above sea level and features dense urban development, making it prone to flooding .

You should also find out if you’ll need a visa before you travel to Indonesia. People of most nationalities will either not need a visa, or will have to apply for one on arrival. If you need to apply for this type of visa, keep in mind that the maximum stay is thirty days.

For more info, check this website .

Getting around in Jakarta

Getting around is easier than you probably think. You can choose between traditional taxis, moto taxis (locally called ojek ), app-based moto taxis ( go-jek ), and even a new bus service operated by TransJakarta (which locals refer to as simply ‘busway’).

In 2019, a rapid transit system called the Jakarta MRT was officially opened, which will hopefully help reduce traffic in the city.

Chances are, your stay will be short. After all, there are so many other places to explore in Indonesia!

We’ve put together a list of the best places to visit in Jakarta when you only have a few days available. The locations on our list will fit all travelers, from backpackers to resort tourists.

1 – Museum Nasional

The National Museum is one of the best museums in Jakarta and certainly the best of its kind in Indonesia. This is an essential location to visit if you’re in the capital.

The ethnology section is fantastic, and there are four spacious floors with sections dedicated to the origin of humankind in Indonesia. The Indonesian Heritage Society organizes free English tours of the museum; if you’re interested, check their website for more info.

2 – Monas Tower

Monas, a contraction of the Indonesian Monumen Nasional (National Monument), is a memorial to the Indonesian independence movement built by the first president of Indonesia, Sukarno.

The entrance fee is IDR 15,000 (less than two dollars). This will give you access to all areas, where you can learn about the history of the country and its struggle for independence, which was obtained on August 17, 1945.

3 – Kota Tua

Jakarta’s Old Town is the original central area of the city. Also known as Old Batavia, the first settlement of the Dutch in Jakarta , it’s home to several important historical sites and buildings. These include the History Museum, the Batavia Café, and the old City Hall.

4 – Sunda Kelapa Port

The Sunda Kelapa Port in Jakarta, Indonesia

This is one of the oldest parts of Jakarta, and even today, you can get an idea of how the harbor used to look in times past and get a real feel of the city. The smells here are not the best, but it’s all part of the experience! Once you get over that small detail, you’ll be able to enjoy the sight of stunning wooden schooners and sailing vessels coming from all over Indonesia.

The easiest way to get here is by taxi.

Once you feel the charm of the Big Durian, you might decide to stay a little longer. Here are some more places you can visit in and around Jakarta.

5 – Istiqlal Mosque

Located near the Monas, the Masjid Istiqlal is the fourth-biggest mosque on the planet. Its five floors can welcome up to 250,000 worshipers. On most days, the mosque is nearly empty, but it reaches full capacity at the end of the month of Ramadan .

When visiting this Islamic symbol, remember to wear modest clothing and to maintain appropriate behavior at all times.

6 – Jalan Surabaya Market

If you love antiques, this is the perfect place to spend a few hours. The Jalan Surabaya antique market is located in the Menteng district, and it can be a peaceful respite from the clogged-up city streets .

Antiques at the Jalan Surabaya Market

Here, you’ll find all sorts of antiques, from vinyls to Dutch porcelain, wayang golek (Javanese puppets), cameras, and accessories salvaged from old ships.

7 – Day-Trip to Thousand Islands

If you want to get out of the bustle of Jakarta for a day, there’s a cheap, accessible island escape right within the Jakarta district: Pulau Seribu , or Thousand Islands! This is a great option for a day trip: it’s not very touristy, but still cheap and easy to get to.

Thousand Islands

First of all, you’ll need to get to the harbor, where you’ll find lots of boats going to different islands. Choose the one you want and hop on!

Once there, relax on the beach, hike into nature, or check out the local village.

8 – Galeri Nasional Indonesia

The National Gallery of Indonesia is one of the best art exhibits in the city, and it’s free! Here, you’ll find over 1700 pieces of art, from both Indonesian and international artists, on display.

There are a lot of installations and bizarre contemporary art pieces…so don’t forget your camera!

9 – Jin De Yuan

This is Jakarta’s oldest Chinese temple, also known as Vihara Dharma Bhakti , and it’s located at the heart of the city’s Chinatown. It was first built in 1650 in honor of the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, Kwan-Im .

10 – Museum Wayang

If you’re interested in wayang (a traditional Indonesian form of puppet play), or in theatre in general, you must visit this museum. It’s located in Kota Tua and exhibits a collection of various forms of wayang . In addition, the museum periodically organizes a wayang theater and a wayang -making workshop.

While you’ll probably find English spoken in touristy areas, you’ll have a much better trip if you learn some Indonesian .

Here, we’ve put together a list of some easy-to-learn words and sentences that will help you make the best of your time in Jakarta.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes while there; Indonesian people are super-friendly and they love it when a bule (foreign tourist) makes an effort to speak with them in their native language !

A first-time guide to Jakarta

Jakarta residents shopping in a traditional market lit by shafts of light

Jakarta is fast-paced, fascinating and fun © Andreas H / Shutterstock

Jakarta is sometimes overlooked by visitors bound for Java's ancient ruins or the beaches of Bali . But skipping this vast, teeming city in the far west of Java means missing out on world-class food and coffee, a historic old quarter, thriving art galleries, some of the best shopping in Southeast Asia and a surprisingly exciting nightlife scene.

First-time visitors to Jakarta can be overwhelmed; roads are heavily congested and the many skyscrapers are often screened by a thick layer of smog. However, there's plenty to see and just offshore are pollution-free beaches and islands. Here’s everything you need to know when visiting Jakarta for the first time.

When should I go to Jakarta?

Jakarta is hot and humid all year round, but there are two distinct seasons: a dry season that runs from May to September and a wet season running from October to April. The best time to visit is from June to August, when it’s dry and the humidity drops to manageable levels.

It’s also perfectly possible to visit in the rainy season, as the daily downpours tend only to last for a couple of hours, although flooding can affect parts of the city. Avoid traveling to Jakarta close to or during Ramadan, when many businesses close and hotels are booked out.

How long should I spend in Jakarta?

Most people visit Jakarta as part of a longer trip to Indonesia , spending just a few days exploring the capital’s historic center and checking out the excellent restaurant and cafe scene. But don't overlook the splendid shopping in street markets and the many malls, as well as the many worthy museums and lively art galleries.

Spend four days here and you'll have time for an overnight visit to the beaches of the Thousand Islands , where locals head for weekend breaks. The closest strands are just a 30-minute boat ride from Jakarta's Ancol Marina .

Is it easy to get to and around Jakarta?

About 35km (22 miles) west of the city, busy Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) is Jakarta’s principal airport, and all international and most domestic flights operate from here. Trains and buses link the airport to Jakarta or you can take a taxi.

Centrally located Stasiun Gambir is the main train station, with express services across Java operated by Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) . Trains are faster and more comfortable than buses, and sometimes cheaper. Passenger ships run by Pelni connect Jakarta with destinations across Indonesia.

With its expansive sprawl, Jakarta is not a walkable city and traffic jams are a way of life. The first line of Jakarta's evolving citywide MRT system runs south from Menteng in the center of the city. For destinations off the MRT line, visitors must depend on slow buses or taxis.

The most reliable taxi company is Bluebird – or use Grab , the Southeast Asian version of Uber. Go-Jek is a motorcycle ride service that’s useful for navigating central Jakarta’s jammed streets.

The Sejarah History Museum on Taman Fatahillah, Jakarta

Top things to do in Jakarta

Old jakarta.

Start your tour in Kota in north Jakarta, where the vestiges of old Batavia – the colonial city built by the Dutch in the 18 th century – cluster around Taman Fatahillah , a charming cobblestone square surrounded by handsome European-style buildings. Bicycles can be hired around the square, making it easy to scoot around the surrounding lanes, where you’ll find cafes, restaurants and hotels.

Be sure to check out the old town hall, which dates back to 1627 and now houses the Jakarta History Museum . Also worth a trip is the nearby Museum Wayang , which has a superb collection of Javanese puppets (and sometimes puts on free puppet shows).

Merdeka Square

In central Jakarta, Merdeka Square is the political and spiritual heart of Indonesia. Looming over this vast expanse of grassy parkland is the 132m-high (433ft-high)  Monumen Nasional , also known as Monas or, more irreverently, ‘Sukarno’s final erection’, a reference to the former president of Indonesia who ordered its construction in 1961.

Merdeka Square makes a great retreat from Jakarta’s hectic streets and is always busy with locals kicking back. There are tremendous views across Jakarta from the top of the monument; get here early and avoid weekends if you don’t want to queue for hours.

Nearby are the Museum Nasional , which is packed with cultural treasures, and Galeri Nasional , with a big collection of work by Indonesian and foreign artists. Also here is Masjid Istiqial , Southeast Asia’s largest mosque (non-Muslims are welcome to visit if appropriately dressed).

Carnival crowds with colorful parasols in Glodok, Jakarta's Chinatown

From Taman Fatahillah, it's a short walk south to Glodok, which has been Jakarta’s Chinatown for centuries. Wandering the lanes and alleys here is an essential part of the Jakarta experience and there's great shopping here, including in the atmospheric and highly photogenic Petak Sembilan Market , where you'll find a sensory assault of fresh produce.

When you’re done sightseeing, pop into Kopi Es Tak Kie or Pantjoran Tea House , two of Glodok’s oldest cafes, for authentic Sino-Indonesian dishes and revitalizing coffee or tea.

Shopping in Jakarta's malls

Retail addicts have over 150 shopping malls to choose from in the Indonesian capital. The Grand Indonesia Mall and Plaza Senayan in Menteng are two of the most upmarket and popular malls, while the old-school Blok M mall is much more about local brands. For a more organic shopping experience, make tracks for the nearby Jalan Surabaya Flea Market, where antiques, textiles and all manner of collectible items await.

Jakarta's art and nightlife scenes

Head to Museum MACAN and the RUCI Art Space (in west and south Jakarta respectively) for insights into Indonesia’s burgeoning contemporary art scene. South Jakarta, and the area of Kebayoran Baru in particular, is where you'll find some of Jakarta’s finest bars and restaurants, such as the rooftop Skye , which offers stunning views and cocktails, or Plataran Dharmawangsa for traditional Javanese cuisine in a tranquil and refined setting.

A snorkeler in the blue waters of the Thousand Islands near Jakarta

The Thousand Islands

Finally, if you have the time, hop on a speedboat at Ancol Marina , a few kilometers north of Jakarta’s historic quarter, for a day tour or overnight visit to the Thousand Islands, where white-sand beaches and resorts create a striking contrast to Jakarta’s urban sprawl. You can also pop into the Ancol Luar Biasa fairground near the marina.

My favorite thing to do in Jakarta

I first discovered Glodok, Jakarta’s Chinatown, by accident, while idly strolling south from Taman Fatahillah on my first visit to Jakarta. These days, I return whenever I’m in town to explore Glodok’s narrow, winding alleys and streets lined with shophouses, hole-in-the-wall cafes and restaurants and Chinese Buddhist temples. It's the perfect antidote to the skyscrapers and shopping malls that dominate much of Jakarta.

There’s a timelessness to Glodok that’s unique in Jakarta, with the latest generation of Chinese-Indonesians carrying on businesses established by their ancestors generations earlier. I love the tang of spices floating in the air, the traditional pharmacies with their dark interiors and mysterious remedies and, above all, the delicious fusion dishes that can only be found in Glodok. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

How much money do I need for Jakarta?

Jakarta is the most expensive destination in Indonesia, up there with Bali, but it’s still cheap by Western standards, so long as you don’t need a four-star hotel and are happy to eat at neighborhood restaurants rather than upscale places.

Museum entrance fees and taxis are a bargain, but alcohol is more pricey than elsewhere in Southeast Asia, especially wine and spirits, as Muslim Indonesia slaps hefty taxes on it. Here's a guide to local costs.

  • Dorm bed in a hostel: 130,000Rp
  • Three-star hotel room: 500,000Rp
  • Airbnb studio apartment: 400,000Rp per night
  • MRT ticket in town: 3,000Rp to 14,000Rp
  • Meal for two in a mid-range restaurant: 350,000Rp
  • Cup of local coffee: 20,000Rp
  • Small bottle of local beer in a bar: 35,000Rp

Frequently asked questions

There are a few questions first-timers always ask, so here are some tips to help you out.

How do I avoid traffic jams in Jakarta?

Avoid traveling in peak hours, from 7am to 9am and from 4pm to 6pm on weekdays. Roads are less congested on weekends, especially on Sundays. To avoid the traffic, choose a hotel near an MRT station so you can make as much use of public transport as possible.

What type of food will I find in Jakarta?

Jakarta is a great place to not only try Indonesia-wide staples such as nasi goreng (fried rice) but also to sample many different regional cuisines, whether that means Balinese classics such as babi guling (spiced spit-roast pig) or Sulawesi -style seafood, as well as Chinese-Indonesian fusion dishes. International food is also widely available for less adventurous palates. Don't drink tap water; purified water is available everywhere.

Do I need to bargain and tip in Jakarta?

Bargaining is the norm at Jakarta’s many markets, and it's also possible at some shopping malls. As a general rule, if the cost of an item is displayed, the price is usually fixed; if not, bargaining may be possible. Remember that it’s always best to haggle with a smile. Tipping is not generally expected, but leaving a small gratuity when you dine out is always appreciated.

Things to do in Jakarta in a day

National monument.

National Monument - One day in Jakarta

At the heart of Merdeka Square, in Central Jakarta, a 132-meter obelisk towers into the sky. This gleaming white object is the National Monument — known locally as “Monas”, it’s a symbol of Indonesia’s struggle for independence. Open to the public in 1975, the obelisk sits on a wide, square base and is crowned by a flame. At the base of this flame, at a height of 115 meters, is a viewing platform, reached via an elevator.

The National Monument actually houses the first red-and-white Indonesian flag that was flown during the Proclamation of Independence in 1945. And underneath the monument itself lies a museum dedicated to telling the story of Indonesia’s road to independence from colonial rule.

Istiqlal Mosque

Istiqlal Mosque - One day in Jakarta Indonesia

Istiqlal Mosque is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the sixth-largest in the world. Situated on Jalan Taman Wijaya Kusuma in Central Jakarta, the mosque boasts enough room to host 120,000 worshippers within its walls. It was designed by north Sumatran architect Frederich Silaban and took 17 years to build, finally opening in 1978.

This huge contemporary structure covers an area of 22 acres and is clad in shining white marble. It’s an impressive example of Islamic architecture in Southeast Asia and certainly worth a visit (especially for fans of design). Guides are on hand to take visitors around the mosque and give them an insight into this landmark.

Merdeka Square

This landmark square lies at the heart of the Indonesian capital. With its name translating to “Independence Square”, this one-square-kilometer space offers up a wide open area for locals to take a break from busy city life.

It was originally called Konigsplein (“King’s Square”) and became an important part of the city when the government moved to the area from the old center of colonial Batavia. Centered around the National Monument, the square is edged by government buildings and has often been a gathering point for protests and rallies.

Merdeka Palace

Merdeka Palace - One day Jakarta itinerary

Occupying the north side of Merdeka Square, construction on this presidential palace — one of six situated across Indonesia — began in 1873. Today the imposing building is used as the official residence of the president of the Republic of Indonesia. It was here, on the 27th of December 1949, that the Dutch flag was taken down for the final time and replaced with the flag of an independent Indonesia. This marked the end of 350 years of colonial rule.

Visitors may enter the palace but only as part of a tour. Otherwise, make sure you arrive in time to see the dramatic ceremony of the changing of the guard, which takes place on the last Sunday of every month.

Jakarta Cathedral

Jakarta Cathedral - 1 day Jakarta itinerary

This Roman Catholic cathedral was completed in 1901, following the collapse of the original building in 1890. With its three towering spires (60 meters tall) and ornate neo-Gothic facade, Jakarta Cathedral stands seemingly in opposition to the more modern side of this Southeast Asian capital; it looks more like something from northern Europe.

Inside, visitors can admire its stained-glass windows and take a moment to soak up its peaceful atmosphere. Guides are on hand to offer informative tours of the building and its impressive architecture.

Museum Nasional Indonesia

Museum Nasional Indonesia in Jakarta

This sprawling museum is a must-visit destination in Jakarta. Taking up space in a 19th-century colonial building, the spacious rooms here display an array of artifacts. These range from artwork depicting historical events to textile collections and models of prominent architecture from across the Indonesian archipelago.

jakarta travel blogs

It’s a modern, easy-to-digest deep dive into the history and culture of Indonesia. Free English-language tours of the museum are available (the schedule can be found online in advance).

Glodok (Chinatown) Market

Glodok (Chinatown) Market - Jakarta one day itinerary

Glodok is Jakarta’s Chinatown, outlined specifically for the city’s Chinese population back in 1740 following a massacre. Today it’s the biggest Chinatown in Indonesia and purportedly one of the biggest in the world.

jakarta travel blogs

Its shopping district or market today is the place to shop for almost anything: fabrics, electronics goods, perfume, jewelry. There is also an array of places to eat once your window shopping and browsing have made you hungry; some dishes, such rujak Shanghai encim, can only be found in Glodok. A must for foodies and curious travelers.

Batavia Old Town

Batavia Old Town- things to do in Jakarta in one day

Once the headquarters for the Dutch East India Company, and later the center of administration for what would become Jakarta, this old portion of the city is the place to go to see how things once looked.

Batavia Old Town - 1 day in Jakarta

Batavia Old Town feels worlds away from the modern business districts and skyscrapers of Jakarta, with centuries-old buildings, canals, 17th-century bridges, and an atmosphere of crumbling colonial culture. It’s picturesque: think tree-lined streets, food carts, colorful sights, and plenty of museums to stop by.

Jakarta History Museum

Jakarta History Museum - 1 day Jakarta itinerary

Housed in an impressive white-washed Dutch colonial building on Fatahillah Square, Jakarta History Museum is the place to go to learn about the long history of the city. The building itself, built in 1627, is today referred to as the Former Town Hall but was more of a central hub of administration and law.

jakarta travel blogs

Remnants of its former use can still be seen, namely in the form of prison cells in the courtyard — used to detain 19th-century Indonesian freedom fighters.

Wayang Museum

Wayang Museum - Jakarta in a day

Located within a building dating from 1912, in Fatahillah Square, the Wayang Museum is dedicated to the Indonesian art of shadow puppetry. Wayang are flat, wooden puppets with moveable limbs attached to sticks, used to tell old stories from Indonesian folklore, including the Ramayana.

jakarta travel blogs

The museum boasts a fascinating collection of these puppets, not just from Indonesia but from mainland China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and India.

Fatahillah Square

Fatahillah Square - one day in Jakarta

Fatahillah Square lies at the heart of old Batavia, the colonial center of Jakarta for centuries. This charming cobblestone square is a charming place to soak up some easy-going ambiance and is home to a number of historic buildings that point to the long history of the city.

jakarta travel blogs

The Former Palace of Justice, now the Museum Seni Rupa Dan Keramik, was built in 1866, while the 17th-century Former Town Hall is now home to the Jakarta History Museum. Packed full of history, Fatahillah Square is also a popular meeting place and a good spot to get a bite to eat.

Lunch at Old Batavia Café

Old Batavia Café - One day in Jakarta

This must-visit eatery takes up space inside a colonial building (built by the Dutch in 1805). Opening its doors in 1837, this venerable institution serves up a mix of contemporary Indonesian cuisine, coffee, and pastries, as well as cocktails.

jakarta travel blogs

The decor remains retro and features photos from decades past hung on the wall, with vintage furniture and other design details to charm visitors. It’s the perfect place to go to take a break from sightseeing and soak up a slice of Jakarta’s history firsthand.

Sunda Kelapa (Old Port)

Sunda Kelapa (Old Port) - Jakarta itinerary

Meaning “Coconut of Sunda”, Sunda Kelapa was once the principal port for the Sunda Kingdom. Situated on the estuary of the Ciliwung River, the 500-year-old port is now only a minor hub of trade and transport, but it remains an important (and interesting) place to learn more about the history of the area.

Sunda Kelapa (Old Port) in Jakarta

Once upon a time, this Sunda Kelapa would have been alive with trading ships, fishermen, and markets, though you can still see brightly colored schooners that ferry goods to and from the outer islands. A walk along the water’s edge here is fascinating.

Jakarta Itinerary: a 48-hour guide to Indonesia’s capital

Kota-Tua-Jakarta-Indonesia

Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia and the most populous city in the country, and home to approximately 10 million people. This metropolis, with more than 170 shopping malls and constant traffic, has been the nation’s political, economic, and cultural hub since its foundation in the 17th century. The city is considered a melting pot of cultures, where the traditions of many nations (European, Chinese, Arab, etc.) meet with those of various Indonesian ethnic groups (among them Javanese and Sundanese).

And regardless of its rich history and colonial heritage, Jakarta receives less than 20% of all visitors annually arriving in Indonesia. Those who decide to include it on their itinerary, end up staying on average two days in the city, often using it as a gateway to other more popular destinations, such as Bali, or just visiting on business.

If you plan to spend two days in Jakarta and explore what the city has to offer, here is a detailed itinerary with the best things to do in Jakarta.

This post may contain affiliate links. By purchasing through these links, I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Jakarta itinerary: day 1

Start the day at the imposing Arjuna Monument , which is located in a roundabout between the main avenues of Jakarta. The statue depicts the final war scene of the classic Indian epic Mahabharata, where a chariot is drawn by 11 horses and directed by Krishna, one of the incarnations of the god Vishnu, with Arjuna holding a bow and arrow.

Continue with a 400-meter walk to the National Museum (open Tuesday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm, weekends from 8 am to 5 pm; entrance at 10,000 IDR). The museum began as a private collection in 1778 and in 1868 was transferred to the current building. It holds more than 100,000 artifacts from all over the Indonesian archipelago and is one of the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia. Guided tours in English are offered free of charge on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 10 am; and also at 1:30 pm on Thursdays. For guided tours in other languages, contact the Indonesian Heritage Society.

Jakrta-View-from-the-top

Leaving the National Museum, walk for about 15 minutes to the National Monument, known as Monas . The imposing 132-meter-high obelisk is made of Italian marble and features a bright flame at the top covered with 50 kilos of gold leaves. Monas is the symbol of the independence and strength of the country in the struggle to become independent. Here, you can see the original declaration of independence and climb to the top where you have a panoramic view of the center of Jakarta. The monument can be seen all day, however, it is only open from 8 am to 3 pm if you want to enter the obelisk and go to the top; tickets for 15,000 IDR. From Monas, take a walk through the surrounding park and see the Pangeran Diponegoro monument. Prince Diponegoro is one of the national heroes and played a significant role in the Java war; leading an army to try to liberate the island from Dutch colonial rule in the early 19th century.

When hunger strikes, you can choose to dine at one of the warungs (food stands) around the park or try Indonesian cuisine at the Dapur Babah Elite restaurant.

After enjoying the local food, if you still have energy, carry on another 500 meters to get to Istiqlal Mosque and see its facilities.  It is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, with the capacity to occupy up to 200,000 people in its 9.5 hectares. Admission is free, but it is recommended to leave a donation for the guide that gives you the tour.

What-to-do-in-Jakarta-Indonesia

And since you are there, in front of the mosque is the National Cathedral , which can be visited free of charge; it was inaugurated in 1900 and displays the European neo-Gothic style. The location of the Mosque and the Cathedral, facing each other, is not a simple coincidence; the first president of Indonesia placed them together as a symbol of the country’s religious diversity, where all religions can coexist in peace and harmony. In Jakarta, I see the religious pluralism of Indonesia being accepted peacefully, since religions are not constantly fighting and imposing rules on each other, as in other nations.

When evening falls, choose one of the restaurants in the Menteng area, still in the center of Jakarta, for dinner. The options are Kaum , from the Potato Head group, famous for its trendy developments; Plataran Menteng , the famous hotel chain in Indonesia; Lara Djonggrang , which offers flavors of the Indonesian archipelago and is located in an old and beautiful Dutch mansion; Tugu Kunstkring Paleis , for an Indonesian meal in a historic building of the 20th century; and Seribu Rasa , which offers Indonesian and other Asian options. And if after dinner you still have a few drinks, go to the Skye Bar , which offers a good view of the city from the 56th floor of the BCA building.

Things-to-do-in-Jakarta-Indonesia-Skye-Bar

Jakarta itinerary: day 2

On the second day of your Jakarta itinerary, head towards Kota Tua , or Old Batavia – the name was given to Jakarta by the Dutch during the occupation period of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The square, called Fatahillah Square, was the Dutch administrative center and heart of the area. To learn more about the history of Jakarta, visit the Fatahillah Museum (Jakarta History Museum, Tuesday to Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm, for 5,000 IDR), which is located in the old city hall building. There you will have access to the objects currently exposed from the collection of more than 20,000 artifacts of the museum, among them VOC pieces, maps, paintings, etc.

Another museum in the area that deserves to be visited is the Wayang Museum (Tuesday to Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm, entrance at 5,000 IDR), which is in the building of an old church and houses the puppets used for the puppet theater presentations, which is one of the most famous demonstrations in Java and the whole Indonesia (Wayang is considered Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO).

Jakarta-Itinerary-what-to-do-kota-tua

Continuing along Fatahillah Square, visit the Fine Art and Ceramic Museum (Tuesdays to Sundays, from 8 am to 5 pm, entrance at 5,000 IDR). It is located in the building of the former Court of Justice and has approximately 400 artifacts, among them paintings by renowned Indonesian artists and ceramics from various parts of Asia. When it’s time for lunch, head to the classic Café Batavia . The restaurant is set in a building from the 1830s and displays a colonial ambiance that transports you back to past centuries. On the second floor, you will find large windows with direct views of Fatahillah Square; ask for a table next to them and see the people on the square using colorful bikes and watch the comings and goings of tourists and locals. But keep in mind that to get a table by the window, you will need to consume food and drinks.

Where-to-eat-in-Jakarta-Cafe-Batavia

In the afternoon, if you want to see more traces of the Dutch period in Jakarta, head north (in a motor vehicle) to the main port of Sunda Kelapa . It was the place where the ships were anchored and to this day you can still find the legendary phinisi schooners (traditional Indonesian sailboat which is also Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO). The original VOC warehouses in the region were transformed into the Maritime Museum (Tuesday to Sunday from 8 am to 4 pm, 5,000 IDR). Other finds in the region are the harbor’s captain’s tower, where ships had to pay excise duty, as well as a typical Dutch drawbridge.

However, if, after visiting Kota Tua, you are tired of staying in the heat outside, visit one of the largest shopping malls in the area, Grand Indonesia . Take some time here to see how the locals spend their days and enjoy the gift of air-conditioning. In the evening, choose one of the restaurants suggested for the previous day; and – why not? – finish your stay with a session at your hotel’s spa.

How to get around Jakarta

For your 2 days in Jakarta, download the apps Go-Jek and Grab, which work like Uber. With the Go-Jek app, you can choose between Go-Bluebird, for taxis that use a taximeter, or Go-Car, for common cars and fixed price travel. Grab is another application from Malaysia and Singapore that bought Uber in Southeast Asia (the price of the ride is also fixed).

You will need internet to use the apps above, and if you don’t have roaming enabled, buy a data SIM card from Telkomsel or XL at the airport. The cost is around 100,000 IDR.

Where to stay in Jakarta

To enjoy this Jakarta itinerary, the best area to stay is in Menteng, and the hotels below are the best ones.

Kempinski Hotel (rates starting from US$ 160)

A historic hotel and the first 5-star hotel in Indonesia. It was opened in 1962 by the first president of the country in a strategic location, right in the center of Jakarta, close to several malls and overlooking the circle with the Welcome Fountain.

Mandarin Orienta l (rates starting from US$ 130)

Another 5-star hotel option, Mandarin is also located in the center of Jakarta, opposite to the Kempinski, and is also an excellent option to enjoy this itinerary.

Shangri-la Hotel (rates starting from US$ 150)

Shangri-la Jakarta is one of the best hotels in the famous Asian chain. It is located next to the Grand Indonesia shopping mall, has 7 restaurants, an extensive swimming pool and the hotel’s spa is one of the most wanted in the city, running until 11 pm.

I believe Jakarta is an excellent city to visit one of the 5-star hotels above since they are considerably more affordable than in other destinations. However, other budget-friendly and strategically located options are Holiday Inn Express (starting at US$ 55), Four Points by Sheraton (starting at US$ 55), and All Seasons Hotel (starting at US$ 60).

My tips to enjoy the best of Jakarta

Always carry cash. Many places can either have problems with credit cards or have a minimum charge amount.

In Jakarta, more than 80% of the population is Muslim, but you can still wear whatever you want, just be respectful.

Be prepared to interact with locals, especially in Kota Tua where you will have your minutes of fame when they ask to take pictures with you. When leaving Jakarta, go to the airport early. Although the hotels above are only 30 kilometers away, the journey there can easily take 3 hours.

Sample 3- Day Travel Itinerary for Jakarta

The Best 3-Days in Jakarta. Find everything you need to know about making an amazing itinerary for Jakarta.

A 3- day travel itinerary for Jakarta is a nice amount of time to sample the city’s major attractions , while still having some downtime at your hotel .

Three days probably won’t allow you to explore everything that Jakarta has to offer, but it will give you a taste of what the city and local culture is like. Many people visit Jakarta for three days. Typically, a visit this long consists of seeing the most popular attractions , shopping and of course enjoying some amazing food.

Ideal Places to Stay During Your Three-Day Jakarta Trip

If you are only in Jakarta for three days, then efficiency is really important. You don’t want to spend much time in traffic, but you do want to still see the major sights.

Therefore, it makes sense to book your room close to one of the new MRT stations . We suggest staying either near Bundaran HI MRT Station or Senayan MRT Station .

jakarta travel blogs

Fortunately, some of the best hotels in Jakarta are within only a few hundred meters of these stations. If you want to be close to the Monas try to book at the Mandarin Oriental , Grand Hyatt or Hotel Kempinski . You can literally walk to Bundaran HI MRT Station from them in two minutes.

jakarta travel blogs

If you stay a bit further north in the central business district of the city, then try to be close to Istora MRT Station or Senayan MRT Station . The Ritz Carlton Pacific Place and The Fairmont Jakarta are two popular choices near these stations (the Ritz is closer, however).

jakarta travel blogs

Once you have your room sorted, then on the first day being in the city you will probably want to see the most popular attractions. Try to work from North to South so you don’t have to make multiple trips to the same place.

Here is a three-day sample travel itinerary for Jakarta:

Jakarta itinerary – day 1: kota tua and chinatown.

  • Start your day by visiting Chinatown in Glodok .

This is a vibrant area that is still very much a functioning marketplace. Picture narrow alleys, temples and busy pedestrian traffic at its finest. You can also check out local markets and electronic malls in this area of Jakarta as well. Petak Sembilan Market is a must-see in this area of the city with fresh seafood, meat and a bustling environment.

jakarta travel blogs

  • Grab lunch at Pantjoran Tea House.  This is a famous eatery in Glodok.
  • You can walk or get a quick drive to reach Kota Tua – Jakarta’s most famous areas for sightseeing. This is the ‘old’ colonial district of Jakarta that has multiple museums , street markets and cafes such as Cafe Batavia . You will also get the opportunity to interact with locals in Fatahillah Square . Conversations in English are quite common here.

jakarta travel blogs

  • Check out  Cafe Batavia for some live music and some drinks. It is very popular with visitors to Jakarta.
  • Go back to your hotel , shower up and get ready for some sky bars for views or drinks. Cloud, Skye and Henshin are popular choices for visitors to the city.

Jakarta Itinerary – Day 2: Monas and Museums

  • Visit the Monas (Monumen Nasional)

You won’t find a more iconic symbol of Jakarta than the Monas – Indonesia’s National Monument. It’s one of the must-sees while in Jakarta.

If you wake up early enough (say around 6 am), consider going up the tower for exceptional panoramic views of central Jakarta. There is also a very interesting museum in the bottom floor of the Monas as well.

jakarta travel blogs

  • Make your way to attractions near the Monas

Consider checking out some of Jakarta’s best sights within walking distance of the monument. The National Museum is arguably the best museum in the city. It is located to the west of the Monas.

To the east of the Monas you can check out the National Art Gallery , the National Mosque (Mesjid Istiqlal) and Jakarta Cathedral . They are all within walking distance of each other if you have the energy.

  • If you walk further north you can visit Pasar Baru .

Pasar Baru is one of Jakarta’s most famous and oldest market areas.

  • Chill out at Taman Lapangan Banteng if you have extra time.

jakarta travel blogs

This is a newly renovated public park in central Jakarta that has the ever-impressive West Irian Liberation Monument .

  • Head over to Pasar Jalan Surabaya Antique Market .

This is a very charming strip lined with vendors selling antique items. Pasar Jalan Surabaya is not big; you can actually see the whole thing under 40 minutes.

jakarta travel blogs

Seeing all of these sights in one day would be quite the accomplishment, but it is possible!

Jakarta Itinerary – Day 3: Personal Preference

During your third and final day of your itinerary in Jakarta, make a choice to explore what interests you. If you enjoy local markets and some mall shopping then stick around central Jakarta.

  • Start your day off at Pasar Tanah Abang (Market) and check out Indonesian Batik.

Pasar Tanah Abang  is the most famous textile market in all of Jakarta. After that, go to the Textile Museum where you can actually make your own Batik!

  • Try out Jakarta Aquarium or MACAN Museum .

These are two of the most popular modern places to visit while in the city. Jakarta Aquarium is popular with families, whereas MACAN is trending with teens and adults for its superb photo opportunities.

jakarta travel blogs

  • Finish off your day with some shopping at one of central Jakarta’s malls.

The mall choices include Grand Indonesia , Plaza Indonesia , Thamrin City , Plaza Senayan , Senayan City , fX Sudirman or Pacific Place . They are all within walking distance of MRT Stations .

jakarta travel blogs

  • If you are tired or markets and malls, then you might want to spend your final day in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah or Ragunan Zoo .

Both of these are very popular and large outdoor attractions. Read the articles for both of them and take your pick. If you are in the south consider finishing your day in Kemang. This is one of Jakarta’s most popular expat areas with great restaurants and drinking options.

This is a sample 3-day travel itinerary for Jakarta. It is very likely that not everything in here will suit your preferences which is completely fine. You can refer to our guide pages to insert other activities and attractions into your plan quickly.

Jakarta has over 50 museums , over 100 shopping malls and all kinds of entertainment choices going on. Needless to say, you shouldn’t get bored while in Jakarta for only 3 days.

If you have any questions about our itineraries for Jakarta don’t hesitate to send us an email. We would be delighted to give you some more information.

10 Best Things To Do In Jakarta, Indonesia

jakarta travel blogs

When most people think of visiting Indonesia, they think of visiting the gorgeous places in Bali , to see its incredible temples and stunning waterfalls . That being said, the capital, Jakarta is a great little spot for a few days visit, especially if you’re already in Java. Now, being such a big and populous city, it can be hard to pinpoint the best things to do in Jakarta; especially when the sights are dotted all over the city.

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect when we visited Jakarta for the first time. After all, our previous Indonesian trips had been to Ubud in Bali.

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (21)

Now, Jakarta is a hive of activity, and I don’t say this lightly! It’s a buzzing city and it’s full of people! This will be the first thing you notice in the city, especially with all the traffic in Jakarta. Though, regardless of traffic, there’s a heap of the best things to do in Jakarta that are well worth a gander if you’re visiting for a few days.

This sprawling exciting city is the hyper-centre of Indonesia and absolutely worth taking time to explore when in the area.

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (25)

With that in mind, take a look at some of the best things to do in Jakarta. Have a great trip!

1.) The National Monument

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (3)

This immense structure is an icon of the city and is situated in the beautiful Merdeka Square. Standing at a colossal 132m high, the National Monument pays homage to the struggle for Indonesian independence and is revered across the country. Honestly, if you’re interested in the history of Indonesia as a country, you’ll want to see this place.

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (20)

Aside from the beautiful architecture of the structure, it is also possible to climb to the observation deck for stunning views of the vast city. Though, just make sure you visit on an un-smoggy day. Views can be hampered when it’s like this.

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (4)

Also, for a great place to stay, we checked into The Hermitage which is in a historic building with a gorgeous rooftop pool, bar and views over Jakarta.

jakarta travel blogs

We loved it.

2.) Fatahillah Museum

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (12)

Exploring Fatahillah Museum (or the Jakarta History Museum), is easily one of the best things to do in Jakarta if you want to know more about the country and the origins of Jakarta itself.

Built at the historic centre of Jakarta, it has a shed load of history to explore and housed the most beautiful (and old) city hall building that is over 300 years old. In fact, it’s said that the building itself was modelled after Dam Palace (in Amsterdam), too.

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (16)

Once here, make sure to see the stone tablets, murals and the Tugu inscription which dates all the way back to the 5th Century. Though it’s a replica (of what’s in the national museum) it’s still incredible to see.

Afterwards, if you fancy a special dinner, pop over to PAL8. They serve up some tasty Indonesian dishes. Their kecombrang is amazing.

3.) Istiqlal Mosque

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (1)

As the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, the Istigal Mosque is definitely worth seeing and is a hugely important building in the heart of Jakarta.

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (5)

Originally constructed in 1978, this mosque has a capacity of 200,000 and features a beautiful marble courtyard with several decorative minarets. Inside, vast columns hold up the central dome and the walls are decorated with Islamic reliefs and iconography.

This truly is an amazing structure is almost hard to miss when you’re in this area of Jakarta.

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (11)

It’s one of the most iconic buildings and the best things to do in Jakarta if you want to see more of how diverse the city is.

4.) National Museum of Indonesia

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (7)

Situated in close proximity to Merdeka Square, the National Museum offers a staggering collection of relics and artefacts pertaining to the history of Indonesia and its cultural heritage.

So, you know, if you’re up for a bit of culture, you should definitely head here! This is especially true if you get caught in a seasonal rainshower, too. It’s one of the best things to do in Jakarta if the weather gets bad.

Oh, also, within the collection, are some incredible stone Hindu-Buddhist artwork, a treasure room full of gold artefacts, a collection of ancient ceramics and even a selection of prehistoric finds such as fossils and ceremonial weaponry, too.

jakarta travel blogs

Also, don’t forget to visit the Indonesian Museum (above), too. It’s well worth a visit.

jakarta travel blogs

They’ve got a heap of artefacts and stunning buildings to explore.

5.) Merdeka Square

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (13)

This monumental square is one of the main sights of Jakarta and spans over a 1km square. To put it into perspective, this square is five times the size of the gigantic Tiananmen Square in Beijing! In the centre of this open space is the National Monument, and surrounding this iconic statue is a series of footpaths, wooded areas, and beautiful water features.

When you’re in Jakarta, take some time (and some pretty sturdy walking shoes) to visit this square. It’s one of the best things to do in Jakarta that’s gorgeous on a sunny day.

6.) Jakarta Cathedral

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (9)

Although dwarfed by the immense Istiglal Mosque, seeing the Cathedral is easily one of the best things to do in Jakarta.

Created in 1901, this church has served as the seat of the Roman Catholic establishment in Jakarta since its inception. The front façade of the church features some ornate Romanesque decoration and two stunning white spires.

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (15)

Plus, the delightful interior has a classic design and is very reminiscent of a lot of European cathedrals. The Cathedral of Jakarta offers a different view of religion in the country and is a fantastic reminder of the countries Catholic roots.

This all being said, you might find this a total bore if you’re not into history and churches in general.

7.) Thousand Islands

jakarta travel blogs

The Thousand Islands are a chain located off the north coast of Jakarta and provide a plethora of opportunities for those wanting to step outside the boundaries of the capital.

jakarta travel blogs

For us, we knew we had to have a little taste of these islands and it’s relatively easy to organise a trip (or a stay) when visiting Jakarta.

Now, there isn’t quite a Thousand Islands to explore, but there are loads’ each with their own charm. Once you arrive in Jakarta, speak to the concierge in the hotel that can help organise your tour. We decided on hiring a boat and skipper to take us for the day, but if you want to keep costs lower, you can opt for a shared tour that’ll take you to the main islands.

jakarta travel blogs

It’s a great way to take a trip from Jakarta itself and see a totally different side to this area of Indonesia.

8.) National Gallery

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (8)

Created in 1999, the National Gallery aims at showcasing beautiful Indonesian talent and is the perfect place to visit to check out some rather significant artwork from Indonesia.

This fantastic complex contains over 1700 individual pieces from well-known Indonesian artists such as Raden Saleh, Affandi and Basuki Abdullah (if you don’t know who those are now, you’ll certainly will and will probably be a fan by the time you leave). The art gallery also has some foreign pieces of work here from artists like Hans Harting and Victor Vasarely.

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (17)

For art lovers, exploring the National Gallery will be a total gem and one of the best things to do in Jakarta!

Also, if its views and cocktails you’re after, pop over to the rooftop bar of Skye . Perched over fifty floors up  (in the Grand Indonesia Tower), it’s one epic place to watch the sunset.

9.) Taman Mini Indonesia Park

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (19)

To gain a much deeper appreciation of Indonesian culture and the historic daily life of the country, head across to Taman Mini Indonesia Park.

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (22)

Spread over 250 acres, this park displays a large amount of Indonesian heritage and tradition in the form of different areas that showcase all the different culture of Indonesia and how diverse the population is.

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (2)

Each area has a heap of historic buildings that are hundreds of years old. Oh, and some dino buildings that are a little newer, too! 😉

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (10)

It’s a great way to see the whole extend of what islands constitute Indonesia and their incredibly rich diversity.

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (23)

We loved it here.

10.) Jakarta Chinatown

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (14)

More commonly known as Glodok, this area of Jakarta is the city’s Chinatown and one of the biggest in the whole country.

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (6)

You see, Jakarta has been inhabited by Chinese migrants since the 17 th century.

Still, to this day, this population remains an important part of the city.

Best Things To Do In Jakarta (18)

Centred on Pintu Road, the Chinatown features some fantastic traditional architecture and a hap of food stalls, too. Oh, and lots of little markets and colourful temples that are well worth seeing.

We loved visiting the temples, here, and it feels so different from the other areas of Jakarta.

You can tour around the whole of Jakarta in just one day, including a half-day sightseeing tour of Freedom Square and its surrounding attractions in the city center, and another half-day trip in the old area of Jakarta with its strong colonial style. If you want to visit Indonesia Miniature Park or Ancol Dreamland , you can also arrange an additional 1-2 day(s) there.

Jakarta , the capital of Indonesia, is located in the northwest of Java . It is the national political, economic and cultural center. Also known as "Coconut City", it is a modern and traditional city, where you can see many mosques and their devout believers, as well as modern high-rise buildings and gorgeous night sights.

Jakarta's urban area is divided into an old urban area and a new urban area. The old area in the north is close to the bay, with unique sceneries and many historic sites. Most of the buildings have typical classical European-style architecture such as the former Dutch City Hall. The new area in the south is very modern. It is the political and financial center of Jakarta.

8 Musts for Tourists in Jakarta!

The old area of Jakarta was originally developed from the ancient city of Batavia which was the capital during the Dutch occupation. There are many old buildings left over by the Dutch. In the center is a square called Fantasia Garden. The old Dutch City Hall has become a historical museum.

Even local people like to come here during the holidays to see street performances or to go on dates and eat in this retro and nostalgic place.

8 Musts for Tourists in Jakarta!

Located in the center of Jakarta, Freedom Square , also known as "Independence Square", is the place where national day is celebrated every year. With the monument to the people's heroes of Indonesia at its center, the north side of the square is the Merdeka Palace, the west side has the Ministry of Defense compound and the Central Museum, and the east side has the Gambir railway station.

In the southeast corner of the square, there is a group of horses drawn carriage sculptures based on the epic stories contained in the Mahabharata, which is very spectacular. There is also a music fountain in the park on the west side of the monument.

8 Musts for Tourists in Jakarta!

Istiqlal Mosque is the largest mosque in Indonesia and also the largest one in Southeast Asia. Located in the northeast of Jakarta Freedom Square, it was built in 1979. Major Islamic activities and ceremonies are held here, and Indonesian presidents and dignitaries often worship here.

The buildings of the mosque are all paved with marble, and there are 4,400 marble columns alone. The main building is the central worship hall covered with a large white dome, which has a diameter of 45m, and the hall has a surface area of 10,000 square meters. The whole temple can accommodate up to 120,000 worshippers at the same time.

8 Musts for Tourists in Jakarta!

As one of the landmarks in Jakarta, the Jakarta Cathedral is close to the Independence Square and the Istiqlal Mosque. Adopting the prevailing New-Gothic architectural style at that time, it has a very beautiful appearance and shares the same elegance as European architecture. The church is not very big, but it gives people a special feeling and weddings can often be witnessed there.

8 Musts for Tourists in Jakarta!

Therefore, the museum is also called the "Elephant Museum" or "Elephant House".

In the museum, there is a gold and silver ornaments room, a bronze room, currency room, antiques exhibition room, and a prehistoric exhibition room, etc. In addition, there is a 300,000 year-old skull fossil of an ancient ape man from Java , a cauldron and an ancient cooking tripod with hollow legs from the Chinese bronze age which was 3,000 or 4,000 years ago, ceramic ware and ancient coins from ancient China, a Buddhist statue of an elephant head, a unique model of Sumatra island, and shadow play and puppet show props. Each district has its own traditional buildings and plants.

Here, you can take a boat tour of the "Indonesian islands", or take an aerial cable car, small trains or carriages to travel around the "whole country", and enjoy the landscape features of Indonesia.

There are cultural performances, celebrations and local cuisines in the park, especially during weekends and public holidays. You can fully experience Indonesian culture here. There are also museums, libraries, image centers, children's leisure centers, and children's parks. One of the most striking buildings is the Golden Snail Panoramic Cinema which regularly shows panoramic films like "Beautiful Indonesia" every day.

5. Getting Around Jakarta

jakarta travel blogs

One of the travel tips for Jakarta is knowing how to get there and how to move around the city. You can get to Jakarta by air, bus or train and also move around via these means. Despite the various transport systems, Jakarta faces traffic congestion especially during rush hours. Due to this issue, the airport rail link was created so that one can get to the city as fast as possible. Busway transport – The Transjakarta Busway is one of the many ways to commute around the city. There is also the City Tour Jakarta bus and a multitude of other public bus companies. Online rides – You can also use your smartphone to request for a moto-taxi, motorbike or car. The prices for these rides are usually cheaper than the public ones found on the road. Railway transport – There are available commuter trains that connect the city. It is usually worth a try to avoid the hustle and bustle of the roads. Taxi – In Jakarta, the Blue Bird company runs the taxi. Be sure to use the right taxi, it is blue doesn’t mean it is safe as some drivers can pose as drivers of the company. Make sure to check that the door, roof, headrests and windshield have the Blue Bird logo, also check that the driver is in uniform before entering the taxi. Bajaj transport – A Jakarta Bajaj is one of the most popular, affordable and environment friendly means of public transport. They are small in size, so they can weave through traffic jams easily. Motorcycle taxis (Ojek) – One can use a motorcycle taxi if you want to pass through narrow roads or in a hurry to get to a place. Be sure to wear a helmet while riding on Ojeks.

JAKARTA TRAVEL GUIDE BLOG

by thepinay solobackpacker | Jun 26, 2018 | Indonesia , Jakarta , Travel Guide | 21 comments

Jakarta is a city with its finger most firmly on the pulse, constantly embracing new developments.  Nonetheless, try to mention Indonesia travel , and Jakarta will most likely be overlooked.  But it need not be, for this bustling city has an intriguing blend of culture, wealth of shopping choices and a flashy nightlife to boot.  Though Indonesia is by far my favorite country in Southeast Asia because of its amazing topography, interesting culture and genuinely friendly people, like most travelers, I have often hightailed Jakarta for the temples of Yogyakarta , the highlands of Bandung or the beaches of Lombok .  On my recent trip to Indonesia , I got the chance to stay in Jakarta and explore this lively capital.  Perhaps like most travelers, I was pleasantly surprised and this metropolis left me curious and searching for other underrated attractions.  Here’s a Jakarta travel guide to help you plan your trip.

TRAVEL BLOG CONTENTS

HOW TO GET TO JAKARTA, INDONESIA FROM MANILA, PHILIPPINES

Philippine Airlines fly directly to Jakarta, Indonesia from Manila, Philippines at 9:30 AM to 01:05 PM. Travel time is about 4 hours. Meanwhile, Cebu Pacific fly to Jakarta from Manila with lay over in Singapore and Airasia fly to Jakarta from Manila with lay over in Kuala Lumpur.

HOW TO GET FROM JAKARTA AIRPORT TO JAKARTA CITY

jakarta monas 11 (1 of 1)

From Jakarta International Airport (Soekarno Hatta Airport) to Jakarta City, you can either take a taxi or Damri Bus.

When taking a taxi from Jakarta International Airport to Jakarta City, the most reliable taxi companies are Blue Bird (Blue), Taxiku (Yellow), Gamya Taxi (Green) and Express (White).  If you will be staying at Jalan Jaksa, the backpacker street in Jakarta, expect to pay around IDR 150,000 / PHP 565 / USD 11.24 to IDR 200,000 / PHP 753/ USD 15. Travel time is about 1 hour.

BY DAMRI BUS

When I first backpacked in Indonesia 5 years ago, I took a Damri Bus to Gambir Station, it’s a train station in Jakarta which is also close to Jalan Jaksa.  Damri Bus is the cheapest option to travel to Jakarta City from Jakarta International Airport.  Fare is around IDR 40,000 / PHP 150.65 / USD 3.

Aside from Gambir, Damri Bus also has buses to Blok M, Mangga Dua, Kemayoran, Rawamangun, Pasar Mingu, Lebak Bulus and Bogor from Jakarta International Airport.

TRAVEL TIP:  If you just need to stay overnight in Jakarta because you are flying to a different town, you can stay at a hotel near Jakarta Airport like Ibis Styles Jakarta Airport Hotel , Ibis Budget Jakarta Airport  , D’primahotel Airport Jakarta 1

and my personal favorite Swiss-Belinn Airport

GETTING AROUND IN JAKARTA

Jakarta City is massive and is quite complex for a first-time tourist here to navigate.   Here are the transport options you can use to guide you in your travel around Jakarta.

jakarta monas 15 (1 of 1)

BY HOP ON HOP OFF BUS

My Indonesia friend Olyvia Bendon informed me of Jakarta’s Hop on Hop off double decker bus and we got to try it during my recent trip to Jakarta. Good news is, it’s for free and it stops at designated bus stops and is available from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM only.

Traveling by train in Jakarta is also recommended, just avoid the peak hours.  I took a train from Gondandingan Station (because it is near my hotel) to Kota Tua and fare is only IDR 12,000 / PHP 45 / USD 0.90.

A reputable taxi company is Blue Bird, make sure you read the taxi logo because there are other blue taxis in Jakarta.  You may also opt to ride Grab or Uber.

BY MOTORCYCLE

For short distance ride, I usually take a motorcycle to avoid the traffic, a cheaper way is to book through mobile apps like Ojek or Grab .  Usual fare is IDR 5,000 / PHP 19 / USD 0.38 for short distance ride.

Another option for short distance ride is Jakarta’s tuktuk . Fare is roughly IDR 20,000 / PHP 75.35 / USD 1.50 per ride.

 JAKARTA TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Jakarta is composed of the following districts: East Jakarta , West Jakarta , Central Jakarta , North and South Jakarta .  First time travelers to Jakarta are generally greeted by Jakarta’s notorious traffic jam, which is quite a buzzkill. But endure this and you’ll find Jakarta is after all an interesting city to explore.  Here’s a list of some of the top tourist spots in Jakarta for first-time tourists, you can read a detailed post of Jakarta tourist attractions here.

CENTRAL JAKARTA

The administrative and financial center of Jakarta.  This is where you’ll find some of the city’s historic and neck-swiveling buildings.

WHERE TO STAY IN JAKARTA

Most budget travelers visiting in Jakarta would stay at Jalan Jaksa, the backpacker street of the city.   It is near Gambir Station, so if you are on a tight budget, you can take the Damri Bus at  Jakarta International Airport to Gambir train station (see getting to Jakarta City from airport section above). Below is my handpicked list of hotels near MONAS (National Monument) that is also near Gambir Station.

Thank you for this useful information.

Indonesian

Hi, thank you for covering up my city. Since your report is in 2017, I suggest that you include the MRT/LRT construction in Jakarta. Tourists feel moving around Jakarta is painful and the city is not pretty accessible. Well the wait is almost over. In December 2017 the sky train connecting all terminals of Jakarta airport is in operation, in 2018 the airport train will connect the station in the city with the airport (Integrated Building), and in 2019 the MRT Jakarta (phase 1) and the suburb LRT are in operation. Hope those help to add an unforgettable experience to explore Jakarta in the future.

thepinay solobackpacker

Awesome, thanks for the info. Looking forward to seeing the MRT in operation

Indonesian

thank you for visiting my country and writing a report on it. I lived in Jakarta for 13 years before moving abroad and I understand why foreigners are not attracted to it: traffic jams, horrible sidewalks, the chaos of the streets, public transport concern, air pollution, etc. I got frustrated as well when driving on the streets. It’s called The Big Durian not without aim: some may get addicted to it but others don’t. Just for information, the government has been trying hard to upgrade the facilities and hope they will help ease foreigners enjoying Jakarta in the future. At least some are ready for now. Here is the commencement of the facilities:

The newest Terminal 3: August 2016 Skytrain connecting terminal 2 and 3 at Jakarta airport: Sept 2017 Skytrain connecting all terminals: Dec 2017 Airport train to the city: beginning of 2018 MRT Jakarta phase 1: beginning of 2019 LRT Jakarta-suburban areas: mid 2019

The government is planning the construction of the next phase of MRT/LRT development in 2019 so we still have much to prepare. We will always welcome all tourists to Jakarta and hope you can still find its charm amidst its “organized” chaos. Looking forward to your visit during ASIAN GAMES 2018 in Jakarta-Palembang. See you.

Hello, thanks so much forth information. Looking forward to visiting Indonesian again. It’s my favourite country in Southeast Asia! 🙂

Pulau Pramuka Kepulauan Seribu
