It was his birthday and his band played Happy Birthday To You for him after the first song, Belief!

After the intermission, he covered Tougher Than The Rest by Bruce Springsteen, saying that it was one of his favourite songs of all time.

It was a good setlist: he played some songs that he doesn't usually play, like Waitin' On The Day, Born And Raised or In Your Atmosphere.

Before playing Changing, he said that to finish the song he thought about Irish people in a pub singing it together, and that every time he sings it he thinks about Ireland.

He and all the band were really great.

WHAT A MAGICAL EVENING OF PURE MUSIC & ART!

The Viejas Arena at the SDSU campus is simply a fabuous venue- and on a perfect cool night in San Diego, the sold out show was an artistic masterpiece- the setlists were spot on. The artsy colorful 3D Backdrop, that I believe Mayer himself was a key designer in its creation, blended beautifully with the video montages displayed above it.

Speaking of the video special effects- subtle, colorful, real-time gems, shadow effects in a stacatto pattern of the guitar neck, I've never seen anything like it in 40 years of concert outings. The crowd was captivated- a long 30 minute intermission appeared relatively early in the show.

I've been going to John Mayer shows since 2002 and though I am obviously a biased super-fan, I can honestly state that this production is-- far and away-- much more amazing than what I saw at the Forum just two years ago.

JM is continuously expanding horizons, getting more creative-- and has the crowd in stitches laughing when he chats up his latest insights & specific San Diego references... I just wish I had the whole show on video so I could watch it again and catch every little thing I missed!

My Husband and I were blown away at the complete show. John is a master of master's at playing the guitar. I still can't get over how amazing it was to watch him get into playing and what we heard. It made so much of a great difference seeing him in person play. His band is extremely talented with the gifts they brought to the stage too. This year we've seen 4 concerts so far and John Mayer was the best! I hope he continues to perform for many years because we'll see him every time if he comes to Phoenix or Tucson (where we live). John spoke to the crowd and made us laugh during the show. They even dropped confetti on the main floor during their encore - it was so cool!! No other band this year we saw live did as much for the crowd entertainment as John Mayer.

We saw John Mayer at Moody Center opening night; here's what the new Austin venue is like

Years in the making, the University of Texas' new Moody Center is finally here. Grammy-winning rocker John Mayer christened the building on Wednesday night with a two-hour concert that mixed new material with old hits and left a nearly sold-out crowd with wide smiles on their faces.

It was the first of a two-night stand at the Moody for Mayer, who doesn't technically get the honor of first act to play the new 15,000-seat arena. The Wednesday-Thursday shows are the first ticketed performances at the venue, but soul greats Earth, Wind & Fire played a private show on Tuesday that was primarily for employees of Dell, one of the arena's primary sponsors.

Known as much for his guitar playing as for his singing and songwriting, Mayer twists the more typical mid-song guitar-solo format a bit. He frequently offers up verses and choruses in the first half of his tunes, then lets his guitar wizardry carry it the rest of the way.

Mayer played half of his 2021 album "Sob Rock," including the set-opening "Last Train Home" and the encore finale "New Light." Sprinkled throughout were hit singles from his first seven albums, including 2007's "Gravity" and "Belief" and 2009's "Who Says." One fan shouted out early on for perhaps Mayer's signature tune, 2002's "Your Body Is A Wonderland." He smiled and answered, "Later," eventually trotting out the song in the second half of the show.

A mid-set solo acoustic passage allowed Mayer to shift gears for some quieter moments with the tunes "Neon" and "In Your Atmosphere." Guitarist David Ryan Harris then returned so that Mayer could lead the crowd in a chorus of "Happy Birthday" for the renowned Atlanta musician, who'd turned 54 the night before.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Harris was one of many aces in Mayer's nine-piece band, which also included longtime bassist Pino Palladino, former Michael Jackson band member Greg Phillinganes on keyboards (plus an attention-getting keytar solo on "Helpless"), guitarist Isaiah Sharkey, keyboardist Jamie Muhoberac, backing vocalists Tiffany Palmer and Carlos Ricketts Jr., percussionist Lenny Castro and former Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers drummer Steve Ferrone.

Palladino also performed with opening act Yebba, an Arkansas singer-songwriter whose debut album "Dawn" came out last year on RCA Records. Her half-hour set was generally well-received by early-arriving concertgoers, some of whom also caught Austin musician Jonny Gray's solo acoustic set on the plaza at the Moody Center's west gate that began before the doors opened at about 6:40 p.m.

So how was the venue itself? Our experience was generally positive: The Moody had a good flow and feel, and the crowd seemed in good spirits throughout, eager to explore the arena's many attributes. We also noticed a few things that could have been better or could use some fine-tuning as the Moody hits a busy spring and summer run.

Better than expected at the Moody Center

Mayer himself. We weren't necessarily fans going in, but he put on a commendable performance that was easy to enjoy. His use of video screens to complement the performance was smartly done, perhaps enhanced by the quality of the arena's state-of-the-art gear. Lighting also worked well, partly because of a wood-panel array hung above the stage that helped vary the patterns and presentation.

Automated concessions and tickets. This was a huge win. Between the two of us, we got food and/or sodas five times at five different locations and never had to wait in line. The cashless concessions stands had multiple checkout stations with one or two employees overseeing and troubleshooting, much like self-checkout areas at grocery stores. Digital-only ticketing also appeared to work well, with lines for entry moving smoothly at all three public gates (west, southwest and east).

Read the exclusive story: Touring UT's new Moody Center arena (yes, we talked to Matthew McConaughey)

The Texas Terrace at twilight. We’d seen this feature and its impressive skyline view in a tour of the facility last week, but it was glorious just after the sun went down. A few more couches and chairs on the terrace might be helpful, but there was plenty of standing room for gazing out upon the UT campus and downtown. The terrace had only beverage sales on this night. we look forward to the planned future addition of food carts.

The upper level. Those may be where the "cheap seats" are (tickets on the side for Thursday's second show start at $43.50), but the sight lines are good, thanks in part to the steeper pitch of the seats that helps keep the seats from being too far away. You really appreciate the full scope of the venue from the upper-level vantage point.

Not as good as expected at the Moody Center

Sound quality. Perhaps our hopes were too high, as Moody personnel had played up the venue’s acoustics-oriented design in recent interviews. It was probably better than typical arena sound, but it wasn’t a quantum leap forward. I’ve heard plenty of acts at the Erwin Center that sounded worse, but also a few that sounded better. (James Taylor and the Eagles come to mind.) That may partly be due to the acts and their sound crews. But we expected great things from the Moody’s new construction, and ultimately, this still sounded like an arena — a good one, but not a game-changer.

Escalators. Moody Center has escalators on the west and east ends of the concourse, but only one was in operation on this night. A saving grace was that there were many elevators — a big improvement over the Erwin Center where it always seemed next to impossible to find one.

More Austin music news: The ultimate guide to spring and summer concerts

Floor seats. The upside: You're closest to the action. The downside: Though there are seats, you're likely standing for the whole show if you want to see. Seat and row markings were in chalk, which smeared away in several spots as concert-goers walked the aisles. Lower-level and upper-level seats have cupholders, but the floor seats don't.

Air conditioning. One concertgoer responded to one of our tweets about the venue by saying, "It's so hot in here! Turn on the AC please." No doubt it was on, but we agree that it wasn't keeping the venue quite cool enough.

About what we expected at the Moody Center

Parking. Some nearby garages were pricey, ranging from $25 to $65, but we witnessed no real problems. There was ample parking in the adjacent Manor Garage around 7 p.m., but a few concert-goers opted to turn around and explore other options when they saw the $65 price tag.

Pickup/drop-off.  If you're looking for a door-side drop-off, that's a luxury afforded to high-rollers only. The drop-off and pickup area for civilian ride shares was down the street on the east side of Erwin Center. Better signage and communication about this might have prevented the swell of concertgoers who spilled onto the Interstate 35 access road after the show, looking for their drivers.

More: Here's what you need to know about UT's new Moody Center in Austin

Food quality. We didn't really expect much on this front, and that's what we got. Here's a rundown and rating (on a scale of 1 to 10) of things we ordered:

• Dig Vegetarian Grill's "Impossible Gyro": 7. The vegetables were fresh, the pita wrap was pillowy, and it was a far more elevated vegetarian option than you'd find at most arenas. Having said that, the "meat" was a scant handful of dry veggie crumbles. ($16)

• Stubb’s sausage wrap: 6. Good size, enough to bring a little of it home. Average taste, but all things considered, one of our better choices. ($14)

• Right on ’Cue buffalo chicken tacos: 4. Not warm enough, kind of dry, but the sauce that went with them was good at least. A serving of two was good, but they’d do well to sell them as single tacos at half the price. ($14)

• Tony C’s sausage pizza: 4. Just not very good: kind of leathery crust, not enough cheese, lukewarm. The only reason this is a 4 and not a 3 is because it was at least cheaper than other entrees. ($9)

We'll try some of the other stations, such as local sausage/pretzel outfit Koko’s Bavarian and Shaquille O'Neal's Big Chicken franchise, in future visits. Big Chicken did seem to have a steady stream of customers at its station just inside the west entrance.

Parker McCollum refuses to meet his musical idol John Mayer: ‘I don’t want him to be real’

C ountry singer-songwriter, Parker McCollum is always striving to heighten his musicianship and one of his greatest inspirations is John Mayer . A lifelong fan of the real-life guitar hero, Parker recently opened up to Audacy’s Rob + Holly about how much he idolizes Mayer, his music, and shares why he turned down the opportunity to meet him.

LISTEN NOW : Parker McCollum refuses to meet his musical idol John Mayer: ‘I don’t want him to be real’

“He’s a massive inspiration to me. I’ve been a fan of his songwriting, I’ve tried to write songs like him for years — I love his records all the way back to Room for Squares ,” McCollum shared. “I can’t tell you how many hours I have spent looking in the mirror, playing guitar, writing songs trying to write something that he would approve of. It’s really been a driving inspiration for a lot of the songs I’ve written.”

While Parker says he’ll always strive to reach Mayer’s level of musicianship, he may be closer than he thinks as the two artists both played the same area just four days apart from one another. As a super fan, McCollum knew Mayer would be at Austin, Texas’ Moody Center just a few days after him and decided to leave one of his favorite guitars behind with the hopes that Mayer would sign it.

“He has a Martin Signature [guitar] it’s called the OMJM acoustic guitar, it’s his signature Martin guitar and I have one and [it’s] one of my favorite guitars — I play it all the time,” Parker said before sharing he left it behind with hopes it would make it to Mayer for a signature. “I said [to the employees], ‘Hey, look. I’m gonna leave this guitar here in y’alls hands [for him to sign]… I put a little letter in there that said, ‘Hey man, If not, I totally get it. You probably have no idea who I am but I understand the grind and the life you live. But if you don’t want to do it — no worries.’”

Just hours ahead of the show (which Parker had front row tickets for), Mayer reached out via Instagram, giving McCollum the shock of a lifetime. “I was sitting on my couch about two hours before the show and I was on Instagram and I just had my DMs pulled up and I was sending a meme to somebody and [a message popped up from] John Mayer... I was beside myself.”

The two spoke via Instagram DMs for 20-30 minutes before Mayer expressed he’d be happy to meet McCollum in person one day, however Parker surprisingly declined. “I’m like, ‘We don’t need to know each other,’” he said before explaining further. “I’m such a fan of those records and I don’t really want to know him, I don’t want him to be real and really exist… I’m sure he’s a great guy, nice guy — I don’t think it would be a bad experience or anything, I’m just still chasin’ that. I always will be, so I don’t want it to be tangible.”

While he won’t be meeting Mayer, Parker did jump at the opportunity to meet another one of his musical heroes —  the king of Country music, George Strait . Growing up on Strait’s music, he couldn’t pass up to opportunity to meet George and was even asked to open for him during his only home state show at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field — fitting it also falls on Parker’s birthday (June 15).

“There was no higher than George Strait in our house, it was God and then George Strait,” Parker shared of his Texas upbringing. “It kind of feels like getting his approval to play before him in front of a crowd of 130,000 people for his only Texas show this year… I’m glad to be actually living out a real dream.”

To hear more from Parker about the show, his love for John Mayer and how he is preparing to be a first-time Dad, check out his full conversation with Audacy’s Rob + Holly above.

Taylor Lautner feels 'safe' but is 'praying for John' ahead of Taylor Swift's  Speak Now  rerelease

The album's track "Back to December" is reportedly about the end of Lautner and Swift's relationship. And a certain John may or may not have inspired another song…

john mayer tour austin

Dear John: Taylor Lautner is praying for you as Taylor Swift gears up to release her rerecorded album Speak Now (Taylor's Version) .

The Twilight star joked on Tuesday that he was " praying for John " — a presumed nod to Swift's ex John Mayer — ahead of the release of Swift's rerecorded album Speak Now (Taylor's Version) , which arrives July 7. Many believe that Lautner and Mayer, who both dated Swift, had songs written about them on the original album: The break-up anthem "Back to December" is reportedly about Lautner, while Mayer is portrayed in a less-than-favorable light on "Dear John."

Lautner, who briefly dated Swift in 2009, was on the Today show with his wife to plug the duo's podcast, The Squeeze , when he was asked about the impending release of her third rerecorded LP .

"I think it's a great album. Yeah, I feel safe," Lautner said . "Praying for John."

He seemed to be referring to Mayer, who inspired the nearly seven-minute Speak Now track "Dear John." The slow, sad song includes damning lyrics such as: "I see it all now that you're gone / Don't you think I was too young to be messed with? / The girl in the dress wrote you a song / You should've known, you should've known."

By comparison, "Back to December" is a much sweeter track wherein Swift takes responsibility for her relationship ending and sings about wishing she could try again: "But this is me swallowin' my pride / Standin' in front of you sayin' I'm sorry for that night / And I go back to December all the time."

Now, Lautner is clarifying his remarks about Mayer and the album. "I don't know if it was the wisest thing to say," he said in hindsight Wednesday on The Happy Hour on SiriusXM's Today Show Radio . "I was definitely joking." On the same day, he shared a TikTok in which he kneeled down to pray as "Dear John" played in the background.

The actor added that his wife, a "die-hard" Swift fan also named Taylor, knew from the moment he cracked the joke that it would go viral. "She's like, 'That's gonna really trigger the Swifties,'" Lautner said. "Or, I mean, they're supportive of it because, I mean, I don't know. I personally think John is a very talented musician, but I am aware of a couple songs that were on that album."

While Lautner is probably in the clear, his humorous concerns for Mayer aren't entirely without merit. When Swift rerecorded her album Red , she famously included a new 10-minute version of the breakup epic "All Too Well," widely believed to be about her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal . When Swift revealed that the extended song would be included on the new album, fans took to social media to joke that Gyllenhaal should be afraid of what was on the rerelease.

Swift hasn't revealed what new tracks will appear on Speak Now (Taylor's Version) , but the album's product pages on her website indicate that it will have six new additions.
