Show Review: Joji Presents Smithereens Oblivion at The Kia Forum
On Sunday, May 13th, Joji performed his second show at The Kia Forum in Los Angeles, California as a part of the Smithereens Oblivion Tour. Before Joji hit the stage, he had recruited three opening acts: Rei Brown, Lil Toe (Ammo), and his DJ Savagerealm. All three openers kept the crowd entertained all night before the big act.
Review: 'Smithereens' is an interlude between Joji albums
Coming off of his previous hit albums, Joji's "Smithereens" felt like a half-cooked and overhyped EP rather than a sequel album to rival his previous release. The album's opener, "Glimpse of Us," is a strong melodic opening and sets the album's theme of missing an ex. The rich instrumentals and cutting lyrics work to create a telling story: the idea of a perfect ex-lover.

A week after I went to the Shabang Music Festival, a friend and I drove to Los Angeles to see Joji's SMITHEREENS tour. Joji is a Japanese singer-songwriter, rapper, former comedian, and YouTuber. His music is described as a mix between R&B and lo-fi.

The doors to the sold-out show promptly opened at 6:30 p.m, with SavageRealm taking the stage for the first set of the night - doing a great job at warming up the crowd with fun.

For some reason, all the signs for Joji's third album, Smithereens, pointed towards a feeling of uncertainty. Whether that be short twenty-four minute runtime, the 2 disks having only such a limited time to convey its message, or the inauspicious song titles for the second half, the album almost felt like it had a destined failure.
