As the singer, songwriter, performer, recorder and producer of all of his own material, Huber has his hands full, but never seems to miss a beat. As one of the founding member of the .357 String Band–a group that would probably fit better in today’s ‘Americana-saturated’ environment than in the early to middle aughts–he’s gradually honed a sound that seems to fill a very real gap within the still-emerging genre. Having progressed, Huber continues moving onward and upward captivating folks with his sincere and well-crafted songs under his own name along with the impeccable musicianship of his fellow touring partners. Whether it’s irresistible, fiddle-driven, dancing tunes or honest, heart-wrenching “songwriter” songs, Huber’s songs and shows spans the spectrum of ‘Roots’ music while preferring not to stay within the boundaries of any strict genre classification.

His lyricism and introspective writing style has received high acclaim from music enthusiasts looking for a more substantive substitute to much of today’s music. Sound Check: Joseph Huber evolves from his .357 String Band days with mature solo country career

With his fourth album “The Suffering Stage,” traditional country artist Joseph Huber has reached a personal milestone.  The 34-year-old’s solo discography is now larger than the catalog for the group that launched his career, the self-proclaimed Milwaukee “streetgrass” act the .357 String Band. “Now you can’t spit without hitting an Americana band,” Huber said. But when the String Band came to be in 2004, “seeing young kids playing banjo, mandolin and upright bass, with an aesthetic leftover from punk rock, got attention.” The String Band found a loyal following among independent country fans, gigging cross-country and touring through Europe six times, until its final show at Turner Hall Ballroom in 2011.   While Huber will be forever associated with that band, he’s making a name for himself with strong solo albums. Included in his busy summer schedule is a prestigious slot at the Blue Ox Music Festival in Eau Claire next month, alongside established Wisconsin Americana acts like Horseshoes & Hand Grenades and Dead Horses, and genre stars the Punch Brothers, Greensky Bluegrass and Drive-By Truckers.

Early experiences: My grandpa played accordion, trumpet, trombone and mostly piano in big bands his entire life, and so I had interest in anything music growing up. I picked up electric guitar when I was 12, and started writing songs around 14 or 15. I had a strangely fluid transition from punk rock to folk music. With punk, I became interested in more raw recording types, and old-timey folk music and bluegrass is pretty rich in that regard. I started to listen to Hank Williams and Bill Monroe and old recordings when I was 17, and they had a lot of the same basic attitudes and themes as punk, and certainly the speed. I played nothing but acoustic guitar from 18 to 20, and when I was 20, I still had my spiky punk rock hair and a leather jacket, but I had a banjo instead.

The rise and fall of the .357 String Band: When we started we had no idea how to play our instruments. We were learning as we were booking shows, starting with basement shows with other punk bands, then places around town like Circle A. We did our first European tour a year and a half after we started, and we garnered a hometown crowd and the Milwaukee shows were getting bigger. We had a fourth album fully recorded, but then we broke up and split the songs across three or four different solo albums. There were disagreements about how much we wanted to tour. Some guys wanted to go gung ho, and I was the guy that didn’t want to do it as much, to be out on the road for two and a half weeks at a time instead of five weeks. And there were general creative differences. We were getting older, and I didn’t want to do the same thing.

Going solo: After we broke up, within four months I had a home recording studio. But it was a tough transition starting over; there was not a lot of name recognition for Joseph Huber. It was a slow start, but there was enough of a good homegrown fan base where a good enough amount of people came over to my side and helped move things along. I would still tour pretty aggressively, maybe 85, 90 shows a year at most, but nothing like the .357 days. I was still into roots music but maybe less aggressive and in your face. It would be extremely inaccurate, as a guy who enjoys birding and hiking, to sing about going on a bender every single night. I write about anxiety and depression issues, and the songs are more personal, but I like the lighthearted side of life too and want to make people dance and have a good time.

Making “The Suffering Stage:” It’s certainly more of a songwriter’s album. I also filled out the sound; this one’s got electric guitar and pedal steel and I do more alt-country, rock and roll things. There are a lot of good dancing tunes, but this one’s more wordy and it’s hitting on thinly veiled political themes and social themes; most of them have to do with economic inequality. The title track itself is over seven minutes long and takes the idea that life is a stage, and the Buddhist idea that life is suffering, and puts those together. I wanted to make a message that you never really know what a person is facing, and they’re probably going through a personal situation that’s difficult and painful for them, so we should not be judgmental.

Goals going forward: I don’t have any grand expectations of blowing up and becoming a radio artist or making hundreds of thousands of dollars. But hopefully I’ll continue to put out albums that are consistently good, where I feel like I’m continually growing as a songwriter.
