City of Hope by Journey

journey of hope song

Songfacts®:

  • The opening track from Eclipse , the 14th studio album by Journey, includes the line, "Never stop believing." The lyric was written about the band's Filipino lead singer Arnel Pineda, who joined the band in 2007. Keyboardist and guitarist Jonathan Cain explained to Spinner UK : "When we were in Manila, Neal (Schon, guitarist) and I wrote it in a hotel room. I had these lyrics come to me, like they do, and I got inspired meeting [Pineda's] family and friends and going to places he grew up. And I thought, This guy is the ' Don't Stop Believin' ' song. He is the city boy that grew up the hard way. And he found his way to YouTube, and somehow we looked at him through a window and chose him as the successor."

Journey, ‘City Of Hope’ – Video Review

Journey has released their new video for 'City of Hope, ' which was the initial single from the band's current album 'Eclipse.'

The new song was written in frontman Arnel Pineda's homeland of Manila, Phillipines, and reportedly inspired by the area. So it makes sense that the video shows the band exploring the city, intermixed with performance and rehearsal footage (filmed in San Francisco) of them performing 'City of Hope.'

Some pretty cool video effects add extra spice to the clip, including editing that drops a black and white extracted visual of guitarist Neal Schon over the otherwise colorized landscape. Schon's slicing guitar riffs are at the center of the track, so it makes good sense that video cuts of him are often the connecting point as scenes and scenery shift.

The 'City of Hope' video offers an interesting glimpse into the often colorful culture of Manila, and reveals the open adoration that is expressed by the local citizens towards Pineda. The residents are visibly proud that one of their own has done so well and brought so much attention to their city. Band members are shown signing autographs as local fans film and photograph the band, with the group patiently posing together for these amateur journalists.

As you can imagine, Pineda's addition to Journey has opened up a new pocket of popularity for the group in the Philippines. Just as they did with their recent DVD 'Live in Manila,' Journey has wisely embraced the promotional opportunity presented by the subject matter of 'City of Hope' for this video. (You can also read our song review of 'City of Hope' here .)

Jonathan Cain recently spoke with Ultimate Classic Rock about Journey's new album and Pineda's contributions to the band, saying that the new singer has “done really well,” and calling him an “inspiration.”

City Of Hope

  • View history

City Of Hope is a song from the album Eclipse .

People waiting for some kind of sign from above, Lost in the shadows of doubt, need a message of love, Nothing is certain in uncertain times, Hard to see beyond the greed and the crime, Oh, the faithful refuse to give up, Homeless and hungry survive just enough, Learn to smile through it all, They are blessed from above

Never stop believin' change will come

There's a city of hope beyond our fears, Where miracles happen, Where truth can be heard, Don't you wanna go to the city of hope

Founded on faith, Connecting us all, A network of love to answer the call, Yeah, that's where I'm from The city of hope

On the edge of the world, across oceans of blue, It's a place where a dream has a chance to come true, Don't be fooled by illusions, or falling from grace, Make your own destiny, find your own place, Where the streets speak the lessons of trouble, hope and pain

I hear them whisper, sendin' a prayer, A cry to the spirit where they no longer wonder

Yeah, that's where I'm from The city of hope

Journey – “Don’t Stop Believin’” Lyrics Meaning

Photo of author

Joanna holds a BSc in English Literature and uses her expertise in literary analysis to uncover the deeper meaning of her favorite songs.

“Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey is a timeless anthem of hope and perseverance. It tells the story of two people – a small-town girl and a city boy – searching for something more in life. These characters symbolize the universal journey of finding oneself and the pursuit of dreams. The song conveys a powerful message: never give up. It emphasizes the importance of holding onto that feeling of hope, even when the odds seem stacked against you. The songwriter, drawing from personal experiences and observations, crafts a narrative that resonates with anyone who’s ever yearned for something beyond their reach.

Ever felt like there’s something bigger out there for you? “Don’t Stop Believin’” captures that feeling. It’s not just a song; it’s an experience, a journey. Let’s unravel this journey together.

“Don’t Stop Believin’” Lyrics Meaning

“Just a small town girl, livin’ in a lonely world” – these opening lines instantly connect us to the girl’s sense of isolation and her longing for something more. Similarly, the “city boy, born and raised in South Detroit,” represents the other side of the spectrum – someone from an urban environment, yet equally lost and searching.

The song progresses through their journey, touching upon themes of loneliness, aspiration, and the relentless pursuit of dreams. The “midnight train going anywhere” is a powerful metaphor for the unknown paths we take in life, driven by our hopes and ambitions. This idea of journeying into the unknown is a recurring theme throughout the song.

The chorus, “Don’t stop believin’, hold on to that feelin’”, serves as a rallying cry. It’s a reminder to cling to our dreams and aspirations, no matter how distant they seem. This line transcends the narrative of the song, speaking directly to the listener, urging them to keep faith in their journey.

The scenes in the smokey room, with “the smell of wine and cheap perfume,” paint a vivid picture of fleeting moments and the transient nature of joy and struggle in life. The imagery of “streetlights, people, livin’ just to find emotion, hidin’ somewhere in the night” captures the essence of human longing and the continuous search for meaning and connection.

The Story Behind “Don’t Stop Believin’”

When delving into the creation of “Don’t Stop Believin’,” it’s essential to understand the mindset of the band, particularly that of the primary songwriter, Jonathan Cain. During the time of writing, Cain was transitioning into a new phase of his life and career. Joining Journey marked a significant turning point for him, filled with uncertainty and hope.

This song was born out of Cain’s personal experiences and reflections on life’s unpredictability and the necessity of holding onto hope. It mirrors his journey from struggling artist to rock star, embodying the emotions and challenges he faced along the way. The song’s characters – the small-town girl and the city boy – are extensions of Cain’s own story, representing the universal human experience of chasing dreams against all odds.

The phrase “Don’t Stop Believin’” was reportedly inspired by Cain’s father, who encouraged him during his moments of doubt. This personal touch adds depth to the song, making it not just a story about two fictional characters but a reflection of the songwriter’s own life struggles and triumphs.

In essence, the song is a narrative of resilience, hope, and the undying human spirit. It’s about finding strength in moments of despair and pushing forward when everything seems bleak.

journey of hope song

Each year, more than 100 men embark on a cross-country trip to test their limits, spread awareness, and celebrate the abilities of all people. With three routes kicking off on the West Coast, teams spend the summer crossing the country over a combined 12,000 miles with an arrival at the Capitol Lawn in Washington DC to mark the end of a life-changing event. Along the way, the team spreads the message of disability awareness through local media and makes stops at partner organizations where we deliver joy to our friends from the disability community.

Is JOH 2025 for Me?!

2024 team page, social media.

THE MISSION

For many people with disabilities, isolation can have a substantial impact on one’s sense of self and well-being. After riding an average of 75 miles a day, our teams are dancing, playing games, or leading campfire songs at a friendship visit with a local group that supports people with disabilities. For many of our partner organizations, our team’s arrival each year is something folks anticipate like a holiday. Journey of Hope is a unique program that also has the ability to draw the attention of local media in markets across the county. This platform enables us to spread a message of awareness and inclusion everywhere we go and help showcase our partner organizations to broader audiences then they could on their own. Our teams also provide additional support to dozens of organization through grants each year.

THE JOURNEY

Few people can say that they’ve successfully travelled from coast-to-coast, even fewer on a set of two thin wheels; less still for a cause far greater than themselves. The trip presents many challenges that test your strength, endurance and will, but it also provides endless opportunities to see some of the most incredible landmarks this country has to offer.

Each route offers it’s own adventure; conquer extremes like the deserts of the southwest or elevations of Kirkwood or Loveland Pass, visit national landmarks like Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon, and take time to explore from the middle of nowhere the nation’s biggest cities. While each route varies in geography and culture, our goal is to provide an equally great experience for every team member and spread our mission to as many people as possible.

journey of hope song

"Journey Home" a performance by the Cal Poly Humboldt University Singers and the Humboldt Chorale.

journey of hope song

The Cal Poly Humboldt School of Dance, Music, and Theater presents University Singers and Humboldt Chorale, led by choral director Rachel Samet, in two live concerts on Sunday, April 28 at 2:00 p.m. and Friday, May 3 at 8:00 p.m. The concert, called “Journey Home,” includes a range of compositions from across cultures and musical eras, and expresses a wide variety of perspectives on the idea of “home.” “Home can be something literal, as a geographic location, or it can be an emotional expression, such as where you feel comfortable or feel like you are part of a community. We are so excited to present various expressions of the idea of “home” in this concert.” Concert tickets are $10 General, $5 Children, and Free for Cal Poly Humboldt students with ID. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at centerarts.humboldt.edu From the "All Events" drop down menu select "Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre" and select your event. The Humboldt Chorale will start off the program with the rousing There’s Gonna Be a Homecomin’ by Minneapolis-based composer Kyle Pederson, which celebrates the power of finding one’s home in community. They will continue with English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams’ haunting The Turtle Dove, which tells the story of two lovers who must be apart as one travels far from home. How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place from Johannes Brahms’ A German Requiem, is a favorite of the singers for its soaring lines and gorgeous harmonies. Abbie Betinis’ Journey Home explores the feelings of immigrants who find a new home in the United States. The Road Home by American composer Stephen Paulus has become a new classic in choral repertoire with its emotional yet simple setting of a shape-note tune. The singers have a bit of fun with a unique a cappella setting of Yellow Submarine. The set closes with Harriet Tubman, a piece by Rollo Dilworth, who brilliantly sets the poetry of celebrated children’s author and poet, Eloise Greenfield, and captures the dramatic story of Tubman’s life. University Singers will start their half of the program with TaReKiTa by emerging Indian-American composer Reena Esmail. TaReKiTa combines classical Indian and Western musical elements to make a fast and exciting opening number. The expressive Earth Song by Frank Ticheli inspires hope and peace in a beautiful yet simple way. Seventeenth-century German composer and “father of German music” Heinrich Schütz’s Die mit tränen säen, is highly dramatic with its significant contrasts in texture, starting introspectively and ending with enthusiasm and in favor of hope. Mi Lugar, with poetry by Cal Poly Humboldt student Jacob Garcia and music by Carlos Cordero, was the result of a special collaboration between the music department and Toyon, the university’s multilingual literary journal. B.E. Boykin’s Stardust is a stirring call to justice for people of color who are taken before their time. Shawn Kirchner’s setting of the beloved American folk hymn, Angel Band, is sure to move the audience with its soaring descants and rich harmonic textures. Beloved American composer Alice Parker’s arrangement of Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal is a lively and an uplifting end to the set.
