Disney Jungle Cruise Adventure Game Review

Protect your passengers and cargo from danger in this family-friendly tabletop game.

In 2020, Ravensburger released Disney Jungle Cruise Adventure Game , a family-friendly tabletop game inspired by Disney’s Jungle Cruise theme park attraction.

Now, in 2021, a special Disney Parks edition of the Disney Jungle Cruise Adventure Game has been released on the Shop Disney website and at certain Disney Parks. While both versions of the game feature the same gameplay, the Disney Parks version of the Disney Jungle Cruise Adventure Game features exclusive cards and “deluxe game pieces” that are painted multiple colors. The boats in the regular version of the game are all a single color.

We went hands-on with the Disney Parks edition of the Disney Jungle Cruise Adventure Game .

What’s this game about?

Disney Jungle Cruise Adventure Game is for 2-4 players with a recommended age rating of 8+. The game’s story sees each player become the Skipper of their own Jungle Cruise boat, working for the president of the Jungle Navigation Company, Alberta Falls.

Alberta is about to take a break from the job, and she’s decided to leave one of four families in charge while she’s away: Lyons, Temple, Cruz, or DeNyle. The family Alberta has chosen will be randomly selected before each game, and players won’t know which family was selected until the end of the game (unless they figure it out using the game’s clue cards along the way).

Players will be challenged to make their way down the river while holding onto as many passengers and pieces of cargo as possible. Along the way, they’ll encounter a variety of obstacles, which can cause them to lose passengers and cargo. At the end of the game, passengers from the chosen family will be worth the most points.

jungle cruise game disney parks edition

How do you play this game?

Each player starts the game with 12 passenger tokens that are placed in four sections on their boat board: Port, Center, Starboard, and Stern.

Each player will also draw one of six Skipper Specialty Cards before the game begins. Each card gives players a special active or passive ability that will apply to them (and only them) during the current game. Players can choose which card they want, or they can draw the cards randomly.

Once the game begins, players will take turns rolling a Speed Die (think movement die) to make their way down the river, and each time they stop, they’ll need to reveal four Navigation cards from the deck. Each card features an “encounter” with one of the animals or scenery pieces found along the river — for instance, the backside of a waterfall, snakes, elephants, and more. Most of these encounters are considered dangerous, while others may help players out. Each card also features a pun or joke inspired by the jokes riders hear on the Jungle Cruise theme park attraction.

jungle cruise game disney parks edition

The Speed Die contains the numbers 1-4, and players will use the number they rolled to determine how many Navigation cards they must encounter on their turn. For instance, if a player rolled a “1,” they must still draw four Navigation cards, but they only have to act on one of them.

Dangerous navigation cards have a danger rating of 1-3, and when players encounter (act on) one of these cards, they’ll need to roll the associated number of “Peril Dice.” Depending on the results of the dice roll, players may need to remove a passenger or piece of cargo from their boat. Each card is associated with a different area on the boat (Starboard, Port, etc.), so when players are required to remove one or more items, they must do so from the matching area of the boat (unless that section of the boat is already empty).

As players make their way down the river, they can stop at Outposts and Mailboxes (clue stations). Outposts allow players to pick up cargo or a lost passenger for their boat (a lost passenger is a passenger that was removed from someone’s boat earlier in the game). Mailboxes, meanwhile, allow players to view one of the families that Alberta has not chosen for that game. Players are meant to keep this information to themselves to give themselves an advantage going forward. That is, if they find out that the Lyons family hasn’t been selected during this game, they’ll know passengers from the Lyons family aren’t the most valuable, and they can choose to remove them from their boat while keeping other families around.

While the game features many chances to lose passengers and cargo, players will also be able to collect a Lost & Found token on most turns in order to refill their boat with cargo and/or lost passengers.

When players reach the end of the river, they can collect a Tip Token worth bonus points at the end of the game. If other players are still making their way down the river, any player that has already reached the end will collect another Tip Token on their next turn until all of the Tip Tokens have been collected. At that point, every boat moves to the end of the river automatically, and the family Alberta selected for the game is revealed. Players will use this information to determine which passengers were worth the most points. Then, they’ll add up the value of all of the cargo and passengers they have on their boats, and the player who earned the most points wins.

jungle cruise game disney parks edition

Is this game fun to play?

Disney Jungle Cruise Adventure Game is a fine game — there’s nothing particularly wrong with it, but it didn’t blow us away either. Once you learn the rules, the game moves fairly quickly, and we appreciate the fact that it will help players (such as younger players) practice their strategic thinking, since they’ll need to decide which Navigation cards to act on and which passengers or cargo to remove from their boat whenever this is required.

In addition, there are a couple of spots along the river where players will need to choose which path to take. One path may allow them to see a clue card, while another will give them access to an Outpost. In these instances, players will need to choose which route they feel is more valuable.

What’s the final verdict?

As we said before, Disney Jungle Cruise Adventure Game didn’t blow us away. We appreciate the clever puns on each of the Navigation Cards, but once you’ve read them the first time, they lose their punch the second (and third…) time around.

We also appreciate the random selection of the chosen family in each game, since it may make different passengers the most valuable each time you play. That being said, the game still leaves lots to random chance and dice rolls, so you can only plan so far ahead even after you learn some of the families that haven’t been selected by Alberta during each game.

Ultimately, this is a decent game that’s easy to understand and play, but it didn’t wow us enough to make it a must-buy.

The standard edition of the Disney Jungle Cruise Adventure Game is available for $29.99. The Disney Parks edition of the game is available for $49.99.

Disclosure: SuperParent received the Disney Parks edition of Disney Jungle Cruise Adventure Game for coverage purposes.

Disney’s Jungle Cruise Adventure Game is a 2-4 player board game inspired by the Disney Parks attractions. Players take on the role of a Jungle Cruise skipper, transporting passengers and cargo as they navigate the river. The game was designed by Prospero Hall and published by Ravensburger .

Alberta Falls, owner of the Jungle Cruise Navigation Company, is going on sabbatical, and she needs a family to take over daily operations while she is away. As a Jungle Cruise skipper, you have been hired to ferry members of four different families to the headquarters where Alberta will choose one family as temporary caretakers.

Along the way, you will have jungle encounters that will cause the loss of cargo and/or passengers. The more spaces that you move in a single turn, the more jungle encounters you must face. The jungle is a dangerous place. But, you can also gain additional cargo and find lost passengers along the way. Oh, and don’t forget to use your warning flare to help fend off those nasty jungle perils!

Reach the headquarters with your cargo and passengers intact . . . as much as possible. The first skippers to the end will receive bonus points (tips) for arriving in a timely manner. At the end of the game, everyone counts up their points from tips, passengers (members of the chosen family are worth more), and cargo (sets are worth more).

There are actually two versions of this game. There is the standard version that—that’s the version I will be reviewing—and a Disney Parks version that will only be sold at the, well, Disney Parks. Other than a far more detailed box, no photos have been revealed for the Disney Parks version. It is touted that the board will feature different details and a different game board layout. Expect to pay a premium for that version when the Disney Parks re-open.

The Components

Rear Board Artwork

Opening the box, I was greeted with a “letter” by Alberta Falls. It’s printed on the backside of the game board with a very nice dark wood design. I like that the designers added this thematic detail even though it was completely unnecessary.

Board Size Example

What I don’t like—and this hit me a bit hard—is how small the game board is. It doesn’t even fill the box. A game board should fit snugly within the box to prevent sliding & jostling while also helping to keep game components in their compartments. While the size isn’t a deal breaker, it certainly is disappointing.

I would have loved a larger board with more room for the fun graphic details on the playing surface, which were created by artist Jacob McAlister . A larger board would also make the boat movers and tokens a better fit; the board components feel just a tad too large.

Board Artwork

The game map combines elements from the Jungle Cruise attractions from both Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom. As a big fan of the Jungle Cruise, every fun detail is instantly recognizable and true to the attractions. The simulated paper texture adds even more thematic charm to the watercolor-esque artwork. Jacob also did the illustrations on the cards.

Skipper Specialty Cards

The Jungle Cruise wouldn’t be complete without puns. Every navigation card has a skipper pun in the “notes” section. With 80 cards in the deck, the cards do have duplicate illustrations, but the jokes and puns are all unique—many I have never heard before. That’s a detail that I really appreciate!

Deck Retainer

Since I store my board games on their sides (prevents box lids from collapsing under the weight of multiple board games), the deck cards slip out of their pocket and into the rest of the box. I like things to be tidy, so I designed a quick deck retainer that simply slips over the cards. During storage, the game board pins the retainer in place, which keeps the cards neatly contained. A simple solution to a simple problem.

Jungle Cruise Adventure Game Deck Retainer

The cardboard components are of good quality, and even the boat placards are thicker than what I was expecting. The Watch It Played video made them look a lot flimsier.

Dice

The dice were an unexpected pleasure. They are dirtied up to fit with the game’s theme, and they have an unusual texture that feels like bone—not that I know what bone dice feel like. I only wish that the boat movers didn’t look so new and clean.

Don’t get me wrong, the boats are wonderful movers with a good amount of detail. They just need some dirtying up like the dice. I think this would make them blend with all of the “aged” components as well as bring out the molded details. I’m on the fence about whether or not I should age them myself with some paint. Hmmm . . . I’ll have to think this one over.

Gameplay Experience

Game Setup

Normally, I would play a game with my nephews and/or sisters. However, due to the Coronavirus pandemic and local stay-at-home orders, I had to get a little creative and play by myself. I played with two players, playing as both.

The game is quick (playing solo), taking 30-45 minutes to complete a 2-player game. However, with real players, each taking their own time, I can see it extending to an hour. Longer with 3-4 players.

Although the board doesn’t contain very many spaces on the river path, the boats are never moving more than 1-4 spaces at a time. The chances of rolling a ‘1’ or a ‘4’ are small, as most rolls will be a ‘2’ or a ‘3.’ Rolling a ‘1’ isn’t fun, but it doesn’t happen too often, so children shouldn’t get discouraged unless they have a bad streak. I suggest letting them have  re-roll if that happens.

Losing passengers and cargo is a regular event. It’s unavoidable, and it’s going to happen a lot, so players should expect it. Of course, there are also plenty of opportunities to gain cargo and find lost passengers, so it balances out.

The one thing that the rule book does not elaborate on is what happens when two boats land on the same space. Since there are no rules stating that multiple boats cannot be on the same space, I assume that they can. It remedies potential problems with landing on outpost and clue spaces that would otherwise be frustrating. And, it fits thematically; there’s plenty of riverbank space for multiple boats to dock at the same time.

The gameplay, artwork, and pun-reading actually made me feel like I was on a Jungle Cruise attraction. Although, I felt more like a passenger than a skipper. Maybe that was because I read the puns to myself in my head. If I read them out loud to other players, would I feel differently?

I only have two gripes about the Jungle Cruise Adventure Game , one major and one minor. The game board needs to be bigger (major), and the boat movers need to be antiqued (very minor). Those gripes aside, the game is fun and light—perfect for families, kids, and Disney theme park geeks who are going through withdrawals (I feel ya).

The artwork is cohesive and beautiful, a feast for the eyes.

Gameplay is immersive, making players feel like they are on a Jungle Cruise attraction. And, no Jungle Cruise attraction would be complete without jokes and puns, of which there are plenty—a few are even tucked away in the rule book and game components. They’re a small, but important detail that the game designers absolutely nailed!

The game’s few shortcomings shouldn’t dissuade anyone from purchasing it. I still highly recommend this game, especially right now with people stuck in their homes because of the ongoing Coronavirus epidemic.

One Last Thing . . .

Antiqued Boat Movers

Okay, I went ahead with adding grime to the boat movers. I originally tried it with acrylic paints, but they looked absolutely horrible! I spent several hours soaking them in 70% isopropyl alcohol and scraping off all of the paint with a stiff brush. When they were as clean as I could get them, I tried a different approach.

Antiqued Boat Mover (close-up)

Using a brush dipped in isopropyl alcohol, I applied “soot” from the Tamiya Weathering Master Set ‘B.’ After the alcohol had evaporated, I used cotton swabs —lightly dipped in more isopropyl alcohol—to wipe off the excess “soot” from the high points. This took me less than an hour to do.

Antiqued Boat Movers on the Board

The results are boat movers that better match the aesthetics of the game. Pictures don’t capture how good these really look.

Is it available anywhere else? My Platinum Plus is worthless during this reservation period so I am wondering if this is out somewhere else.

Disney Jungle Cruise board game review: "Something special for fans"

jungle cruise game disney parks edition

Players:  2 - 4 Difficulty:  Easy Time to set up:  2 minutes Time to play:  45 - 60 minutes Average price: $29.99 Age:  8+

The Disney Jungle Cruise board game couldn't have come at a better time. With COVID-19 making it difficult to get near vacation spots like Disneyland and halting the release of a movie adaptation starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, it's nice that we can at least enjoy one of Disney's most iconic rides in tabletop form.

That's because it's exactly like the Disney parks' Jungle Cruise, for better or worse. For starters, it's crammed with the daddest of dad jokes that make the ride so memorable. It's also got references to iconic scenes like those bathing Indian elephants or the rhino menacing explorers stuck up a tree. But that's all superficial. Much like the ride itself, the Jungle Cruise board game is more of an 'experience' than a strategic adventure. While that doesn't make it one of the best board games (or the sort of board game for adults you keep coming back to), it does provide a chilled-out hour or so that fans should enjoy and kids will love.

Falling overboard

The Disney Jungle Cruise board game follows the same premise as the ride - passengers go on a dangerous trip through the rainforest with a funny yet inept skipper, meeting all sorts of perils along the way. Except in this case, you're the skipper… and you've got to lead your crew to safety. The more passengers and cargo you get over the finish line, the more points you'll have. The skipper with the most points at the end wins. Simple.

Well, almost. That task is harder than you might think. True to the story of the ride, things always seem to be going wrong on the Jungle Cruise. In fact, the dangers you'll encounter (ranging from a pride of lions to man-eating piranhas) are represented by the four cards you'll draw after moving up the board's river. As dictated by their difficulty rating, these encounters will lose you a set number of passengers or pieces of cargo.

Disney Jungle Cruise board game

Unfortunately, trying to speed past them won't help. That's because the number of cards you need to face is equal to your movement dice roll. Let's say you rolled a three. Yes, this means you can move three spaces ahead of the competition. But you'll also have to face three of the four cards you drew. Slow and steady is better as a result: the faster you move, the riskier things become.

This is where tactics become important. Each encounter card tells you which side of the boat it affects, and they all have a difficulty rating that states how many dice you'll roll to decide the number of passengers - if any - that fall overboard. As such, you'll probably want to choose the lower risk cards whenever possible, or the ones that affect an empty side of your boat. It's a juggling act that makes things more interesting.

The eighth wonder of the world

To heighten the tension, you'll need to be selective with whoever you sacrifice as well. Your passengers are made up of four families, and one of them is due to become the new owner of the Jungle Cruise company. Get members of that family to the end and you'll receive extra points. The problem? You don't know which family has won the contract, and it changes every time you play. To narrow things down, you'll have to take detours and uncover clue tokens scattered along the board. Like classic board games such as Clue / Cluedo, they'll tell you who isn't getting the contract. That means you'll need to use the process of elimination to work out who you have to protect - and all without tipping off your opponents. This adds texture to gameplay, especially because your adversaries might not have seen the same Clue tokens you have. This offers a chance for sneaky misdirection.

That's about as complicated as things get, though. Which isn't a bad thing, of course; it's ideal for a younger audience or adults who want to relax rather than stress over complex rules. It's just not a game that's going to entertain you for long if you're expecting something a little more strategic (if that's the case, you're better off with Disney Villainous and Marvel Villainous ). There's not a lot of replay value for much the same reason. The Jungle Cruise board game is more passive, much like the ride itself. Although that reduces the appeal for those who want to be challenged, it's perfect as a board game for kids or a board game for families to enjoy together.

Disney Jungle Cruise board game

Especially thanks to its good-natured sense of humor. It's very endearing. For example, each encounter card features events and art inspired by the ride itself (ranging from crashed planes to the eighth wonder of the world, "the backside of water"), and all of them bear a unique joke that Skippers in the Disney parks actually make. It's nice that these puns aren't repeated across multiple cards too, even if the artwork is; it's a sign of care and attention, offering a more premium feel.

That's true of artwork in the Disney Jungle Cruise board game in general. It's a real beauty, with theming that captures the ride itself perfectly. It's humorous and exaggerated, but also stuffed with fascinating details taken straight from Disneyland / Walt Disney World. Equally, the boat movers themselves are chunky and detailed, not unlike those in the Villainous series or the Disney Villainous expansions .

This gives the Jungle Cruise board game something special for fans like me. Although the gameplay might not be quite as exciting as the events it discusses, lovers of the Disney parks will appreciate everything that accompanies it (it's a good chaser after the Imagineering series on Disney Plus ). Additionally, it's a great choice of game for families to play with their children. It's simple enough to get the hang of quickly, but offers a dash of complexity to give older kids and adults something to think about.
