According to PA Mohammad Riyas, Kerala’s Tourism Minister, 1.88 crore domestic tourists visited the state in the last year, which is an all-time record ever, since its formation. Mohammad Riyas also announced the names of the most popular tourist places in Kerala which have welcomed the most tourists. According to the reports , six districts of Kerala, Wayanad, Alappuzha, Malappuram, Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki and Pathanamthitta received major tourist footfalls in 2022. Moreover, the minister said that Kerala has become a trending wedding destination after the COVID pandemic, which helped the state to achieve the record. Referred to as the Venice of the East, Alappuzha has always enjoyed an important place in the maritime history of Kerala. Today, it is famous for its boat races, backwater holidays, beaches, marine products and coir industry. Alappuzha Beach is a popular picnic spot. The pier, which extends out to the sea here, is over 137 years old. Entertainment facilities at the Vijaya Beach Park add to the attraction of the beach. There is also an old lighthouse nearby which greatly intrigues all visitors. Another delightful experience while in Alappuzha is the houseboat cruise. The houseboats you find in the backwaters of Alappuzha are in fact a reworked version of the Kettuvallams of olden times. Kettuvallam is a Malayalam word, ‘Kettu’, refers to dwelling structures and ‘Vallom’ means boat. In the olden days, kettuvallam or boat with thatched roof that covers over wooden hulls was used to carry tons of rice and spices.  Of late, houseboats come equipped with all the comforts of a good hotel room including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony for angling. An uninterrupted view of life in the backwaters can be enjoyed while staying in a houseboat.

7. Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Trivandrum

CULTURE OF KERALA

FOOD OF KERALA

1. puttu and kadala curry.

Puttu is a cylindrical steamed rice cake that is cooked with coconut shavings. This is a popular breakfast item in Kerala and a portion of the staple food. It is usually served with Kadala Curry, which are essentially black chickpeas.

2. Appam with Stew

Anybody from Kerala can vouch that this dish is Kerala’s favourite dish. Appam is basically rice pancake with soft and thick centres. It is usually paired with a southern style stew making it Appam with Stew.

3. Idiyappam

The dish is basically made of rice flour, water and salt. Then numerous strands of vermicelli are entwined together to make this version of an Appam.

4. Nadan Kozhi Varuthathu (Spicy Chicken Fry)

Chicken Fry is a must. This version of a chicken fry is something that is served on a banana leaf, the chicken is fried with onion, garlic, chilli, vinegar and coriander. The fiery taste adds to its taste.

5. Kerala Prawns Curry

Missing out on the Prawns Curry in Kerala is criminal. The prawn curry is sprinkled with chilli, salt, pepper and then dipped in lots of coconut milk, jaggery and then finished with curry leaves.

6. Beef Fry

The paralyzing flavours of this dish will make you fall in love with it. The beef fry is coated with curry leaves, ginger garlic paste and mustard leaves giving it the authentic flavour that is boasts of.

7. Malabar Parotha

The Parotha is mouth-watering street food of Kerala. It originates from the Malabar region. The dish has a flaky, crispy and crumbly texture. It melts in your mouth and leaves behind a sweet taste.

8. Fish Molee
