kiel oslo cruise ship

Once or twice a year I drive to Oslo region via Denmark and use the ferry Hirtshals - Larvik for the last part. The trip only last 4 hours, so no sleeping cabin needed. This also makes it a more economic way of getting to north Germany compared to the Colorline luxury cruise Oslo - Kiel. We usually eat in the boat. The variety of food is not as great as the Colorline luxury cruise, but still plenty of dishes to choose from in the evening buffet. The breakfast buffet is somewhat simpler and comparable to an English breakfast, tea (coffee) and cakes included. The taxfree shop has plenty of unhealthy products for great prices compared to Norway, but it is a good idea to compare with German prices. On the other hand, you also find stuff hard to find south of Denmark; like mascot trolls! Important: The Norwegian government has lost faith in the inner Schengen area, so you must show your passport (or local Schengen area residence permit) upon Colorline checkin.

Really disappointed with this ferry service. Have used it twice now. First time we used the general public area. No where near enough seating for how busy the service is, is hard to find a spot and if you want to try the shop you have to have someone guard your seat. Second time I paid for the business class lounge. This is simply aircraft style seating in 3+3 across. Narrow uncomfortable seats but at least it had free hot and cold drinks. Only had windows in one side and the view was blocked outside anyway. Color line should pay a visit to the P&O lounge's on the Dover-Calais fleet. Half the price and properly comfortable. If it wasn't the only way to Norway I really would consider other options. Top tips, don't bother with the lounge and pack your own food and drink.

Going to Denmark used to take all night - but with superspeed you can go there twice a day - in less than 4 hrs. Save money and Book in advance. Summer is the expensive season. Nice ship - some entertainment for the kids. Restaurants and tax free shopping. Save money by bringing your own food - or Enjoy the buffet

kiel oslo cruise ship

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this review, but I’ll post it anyway. I took the ferry from Kiel to Oslo and back in March/April 2019 and it was a great experience! The ferries depart at 1400 and arrive at 1000 the next day - no matter which direction you travel. The check-in was uncomplicated and finding the rooms was easy. However, getting along on the ship took a little while. Everything is well-organized and everyone on board is extremely helpful and friendly! We had an outside-cabin with a big window through which we were lucky enough to see the sundown (we were on the right side of the ship to see it). The room could accommodate 4 persons (5 on the way back), but I personally think the space is just right for 2 persons. What was a little annoying during the night was the sound of a fan, but I understand that since you cannot open a window, this is the only way to provide fresh air to the cabin. You get used to is after some while. The cabin was clean, so were the towels and the bed linen. Two beds were mounted in the ceiling of the cabin, one was mounted to the wall and the other/s was/were couches that could be flipped and turned into beds. On board, you find a lot of things so you won't get bored during the 20-hour-voyage: gym, sauna, different restaurants, a shopping street on the promenade deck, a pub, café, duty-free shop, theater with shows at 1900 and 2100, and so on. We had dinner in the buffet restaurant, where also the breakfast was served, and it was fantastic: Large choice of good-quality foods, too much to name it all here. Anybody should find something that she/he likes (try the seafood!). However, you should be aware that almost everything costs extra on board and that the prices are on a Norwegian level. It is possible to bring along some food yourself if you travel on a budget since there is a fridge in the cabin and drinks can be easily bought at the duty-free shop. But I recommend a visit to the pub anyway, since the guys playing live music are really entertaining! Also take a visit to the panorama bar on the very top of the ship, especially when leaving Oslo, since you get a great view from there (unfortunately we didn't get a seat, so be fast!). I can recommend taking a cruise between Kiel and Oslo since it is a slow, relaxed way of traveling (it takes roughly half the time by car). You arrive in Kiel/Oslo well-rested and can continue your trip. Regarding the quite high prices, remember that the bridges and ferries in/between Germany/Denmark/Sweden also cost money - so it might be worth it! Be aware that the internet is not free of charge and to turn off your data on the cell phone! Roaming can get pretty expensive using the ship’s mobile network.

The voyage was quite all right, as usual. Why bother to find another ferry when this one from Larvik to Hirtshals is the fastest one to Denmark and the most comfortable? Look for more reviews by MulleEllum.

The Norway Guide

How to Get From Oslo Cruise Port to Oslo City Center

Norway’s capital city Oslo has a big cruise ship harbor where huge cruise ships bring in thousands of passengers daily all year round. Oslo is a great city to spend a full day as a cruise ship tourist, but the first thing you want to do when arriving in Oslo is to get from the cruise port to the actual Oslo city center.

We’re going to showing you how to easily get from the Oslo Cruise Terminals to Oslo City center in this article!

The Oslo Cruise Port is located just south of the main city center, which is within walking distance of Oslo’s city center. The walk is between 4 and 15 minutes, depending on which side of the harbor the cruise ship docks at. But just keep walking north (away from the fjord where the cruise ship came from) to get to the city center.

It’s a pretty easy and relaxing stroll that will show you some of the popular tourist spots in Oslo along the way, and I urge you to walk if you are in shape to do so. If not, just get in one of the many taxis that will be waiting at the port.

A cruise ship at Port of Oslo

You can also get on the Oslo Jump-On Jump-Off Tour Bus directly from Oslo harbor, which makes it super easy to get to all the amazing attractions and sights in Oslo. Tickets to this bus can be bought here:

Walking directions to get from Oslo Port to the city center

We’re using Oslo S (the main public transportation hub in Oslo) as Oslo’s city center in this article. This is where Karl Johan’s Gate begins, which will take you trough the main shopping street, ending at the Royal Palace.

To get from Oslo Cruise Port to Oslo City Center, just follow the harbor promenade until you are next to the Opera House, then keep walking straight ahead for another 2 minutes. Make sure you see the Oslo Opera House and MUNCH Museum on your right to make sure you are walking in the correct direction.

Most cruise ships docks at Revierkaia, which is the dock closest to the city center. The walk from Revierkaia to Oslo S is just 4 to 7 minutes.

If your cruise ship dock on the other side (meaning that you will be looking directly at Akershus Fortress), the walk is a bit longer. However, the directions are mostly the same; walk south until you pass the tip of the half-island, then head north, passing by Revierkaia on your way.

While this might sound complex, the mantra is just to follow the harbor promenade . The total length of the stroll is just over 1,3 km, and takes roughly 20 minutes or so. It’s a nice and scenic stroll, so I urge you to walk if you are able to.

If you’re not up for the walk, then just get in one of the multiple taxis that will be waiting at the cruise harbor. They will be lining up and waiting for cruise tourists to get in, so feel free to use them as you wish. Keep in mind that taxis are insanely expensive in Norway before you get in though !

A Norwegian taxi

There are no good public transpiration options (it’s just a few minutes to walk after all), unless the cruise line offers a bus to certain points in the city.

Color Line docks much further away

If you’re coming to Oslo with the Color Line cruise ship from Kiel, then be prepared to be docked a bit further away from the city. The Color Line Terminal is about 3 kilometers away from Oslo S, which means a brisk 40 minute walk to get there.

However, it’s far from a bad thing if you want to explore Oslo as a tourist. The Color Line Terminal is actually pretty close to Bygdøy (where you will find museums like the Viking Ship Museum ( closed for renovations until 2026 ), The Fram Museum , Oslo’s very own stave church , and many other attractions.

Gol Stavkirke

The terminal is also fairly close to Aker Brygge and the Royal Palace, so it’s a decent place to begin exploring Oslo after all.

The map below shows you how you can walk to Oslo S. It’s also possible to ride the bus to the city center if you don’t feel like walking.

Oslo cruise port

Region Baltic - Norwegian Fjords - Russia

Local Time 2024-05-14 00:14

Port Oslo cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Oslo, Norway. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Oslo is Norway's largest seaport (located on Aker River / at Oslofjord ’s entrance) and also the country's capital and largest city with population around 670,000 (metro around 1,59 million).

The city is Norway's governmental and economic center, and also serves as country's main hub of commerce, banking, shipping trade, maritime industries. Here are headquartered nearly 2000 large companies within the maritime sector. Some of these are the world's largest shipbrokers, insurance brokers, passenger and cargo shipping companies. The city also houses numerous cultural facilities, historical buildings, museums, art galleries, recreational parks (Frogner, Bygdoy, Ekebergparken, St Hanshaugen, Toyen), annual festivals.

The metro area contributes around 1/4 of Norway's GDP and generates over 1/4 of country's tax revenues. In 2018, Oslo City was ranked 5th in the list of world's top 10 most expensive cities - following Singapore , Paris , Zurich , Hong Kong , and followed by Geneva, Seoul (Port Incheon) , Copenhagen , Tel Aviv (Port Haifa) and Sydney NSW .

Oslo Airport is an international airport connecting the city to 26 domestic and 151 international airports. In 2017, the airport served over 27 million passengers, ranking it Scandinavia's 2nd-busiest (after Copenhagen) and Europe's 19th-busiest. The airport is located in Gardermoen - approx 35 km (22 mi) northeast from downtown. It is connected to downtown via Gardermoen Line (high-speed trains). The city is also served by Torp Airport (Sandefjord), located approx 119 km (74 mi) to the south of downtown.

The seaport is Norway's principal (and largest) cargo and ferry port, handling weekly between 50-70 ship calls. Around 1/2 of country's population lives less than 3-hour drive from the seaport, which is located at short distance to city's main railway and road connections.

Port Oslo is the main contributor to the city's economy, being ranked as Norway's largest general cargo and containership port, as well as the country's main passenger shipping (ferry) gateway. The seaport handles annually around 6000 vessels, with total cargo volume around 6 million tons and passenger shipping volume nearly 7 million. The port authority company is "Port of Oslo KF".

At its modern terminals, the port can handle all types of cargo ships with draft up to 11 m (36 ft) as max quay water depth. The seaport has total land area 1,26 km2 (0,5 mi2) and total quay length 9922 m (32550 ft). Pilotage (pilot assistance) is mandatory for all vessels.

Currently, the Port handles 3 daily ferry arrivals with all 21 weekly crossings between Norway and Denmark ( Copenhagen , Frederikshavn ) and Germany ( Kiel ). Regularly scheduled cruiseferries connect Oslo with Kiel ( Color Line , 7 weekly crossings, travel time 20 hours), with Copenhagen ( DFDS Seaways , 7 weekly crossings, time 17 hours) and with Frederikshavn ( Stena Line , 7 weekly crossings, time 9 hours).

For FY2018 (fiscal year), Port Oslo reported a record volume of TEU-containers (238,000, or 14% increase over 2017) handled at YILPort Oslo terminal - Norway's newest and most modern. Half of the country's population lives within a 3-hours drive from the seaport, and ~80% of all containerized goods enter Norway through Oslo.

Officially inaugurated on January 8, 2019, Port Oslo now offers  shoreside power supply  to berthed vessels. The first ship that received shore-to-ship power was  Stena Saga . The technology allows docked vessels to shut down their diesel engines and plug into city's electricity grid (via pierside electrical hookups), thus reducing bad emissions by up to 95%. The expected annual diesel fuel savings are 1400+ tons - the annual CO2 emissions equivalent of 1300 cars.

In May 2023, Zinus Power (supplier of shore power products and solutions) won a contract with powerCON (Neutrik-owned electrical connector) to supply Port Oslo's CRU500 (portable cable management system). When the project is completed, the Port will have the capacity to supply with electricity all berthed cruise vessels.

Oslo cruise port
