Popular Lake Tahoe Beach to Test Reservation System This Summer

I t’s truly hard to describe the grandeur of Lake Tahoe. There’s so many aspects of the lake that make it so enjoyable and fun, but also enigmatic.

One of the best feelings I’ve ever had is diving into the crystal blue waters of Lake Tahoe on a hot day, and I know many people feel the same. That’s why it attracts so many visitors from around the world.

However, it’s a blessing and a curse.

Complaints of overcrowded beaches, endless traffic, litter, and an overall feeling of self-entitlement are just some of the issues faced at Lake Tahoe during the summer.

Working at a rafting company out of Tahoe City for eight summers enabled me to see the absolute worst of it. A whole lot of booze, sun, and family time just really gets people going.

I’ve seen fights and arrests on the docks, been in the middle of a couple of them, and watched full rafts flip over in the rapids dumping hundreds of beer cans, with no one even thinking twice about not picking them up.

I’ve seen drunken rampages go through the River Ranch Bar, watched a couple fight for a half hour until the man threw her bag into the river with their keys, seen brides-to-be puking all over our old wooden dock, and more I dare not recount on the internet.

Sometimes it truly sickened me to watch fellow humans act like this. I know it’s fun to have a few drinks and get a little wild in the water, but time and time again I watched people step over the line.

And sadly, it’s already beginning for the summer.

“In May, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Zephyr Cove Beach 19 times,” Sheriff Dan Coverley said.

And it’s not even officially summer yet. I wonder what kind of madness will be ensuing at Zephyr Cove on the 4th of July this year.

Another one of the most popular beaches on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe is Sand Harbor. It’s a Nevada State Park Beach, and the parking lot can be filled by 9 am on early days. Leaving people to fend for themselves by parking on the side of the road, sneaking in, or figuring something else out.

However, later this summer Sand Harbor is going to test out a reservation system. It won’t be implemented until August, and it will run through October. Then, it should be in full effect for next summer.

Sand Harbor is the most popular Nevada State Park, and officials are hoping that this curbs the overcrowded beaches, reduces traffic, and creates a safer environment in general.

The park was only designed for about 1,200 people, but on a busy summer day the park can see more than 3,000 visitors.

Lake Tahoe's Sand Harbor State Park will soon require reservations: Here's what to know

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. -- Popular travel destinations with iconic photo opportunities, historic sites or natural landmarks have become increasingly difficult for some cities to control when they become overrun with tourists, especially during peak travel seasons. Now, one popular waterfront destination in Lake Tahoe is adding its name to the sea of sites implementing a reservation system.

Much like in Venice, Italy, where the city recently implemented a registration method to charge visitors, Lake Tahoe is now adding a reservation system at one popular beach later this summer.

The allure of pristine, crystal-clear waters bustling with boats and beachgoers at Sand Harbor State Park during the high season has in more recent years caused traffic jams that the Nevada Division of State Parks said it's seeking to eradicate.

"This new system aims to reduce traffic congestion on Highway 28, improve trip planning and alleviate overcrowding," Tyler Kerver, Nevada State Parks' education and information officer, told ABC News.

Starting Aug. 17 through Oct. 13, 2024, reservations will be required for visitors at Sand Harbor State Park on weekends and holidays only.

"This initial trial period will help staff and visitors adjust to the new procedures, with full implementation set for April 2025," Kerver said. "To accommodate spontaneous visits, entry after 10:30 a.m. will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to park capacity."

Kerver added, "Reservations made before the day of arrival are subject to a non-refundable $5 reservation fee. However, reservation fees for same-day bookings will be waived."

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in America, but that popularity does not seem to apply only to humans.

Video sent by KCRA 3 viewer Josh Klekowski showed two curious black bear cubs in Tahoe City walking by a cabin he and his family were staying at until they spotted a wagon filled with recreational items such as basketballs and pickleball paddles.

The first thing one of the two cubs — the mother could be seen lurking in the distance watching over them — grabbed with its two front paws was a pickleball paddle. Then the second cub also helped itself to one of the other paddles.

Klekowski believes this might have been his second time in the same day spotting the family of three bears. He said he was going on a walk Sunday afternoon when he ran into the mother bear.

The bear started walking toward him but then he walked away until the bear turned around. He later noticed two cubs with the mother, leading Klekowski to believe the bear was trying to protect its cubs.

Almost two hours later, Klekowski stayed at the cabin while the rest of his family went biking. From inside, he spotted a bear and two cubs again. He said he could not contain his excitement about recording the bears playing with the items in the wagon.

Normally, bears tend to prefer going after food, but the weather must have been favorable for the cubs to prefer some fun and games.

Earlier Tuesday, another KCRA 3 viewer showed a black bear in the back of a pickup truck trying to get into a cooler. Some construction workers could be heard yelling at the bear trying to scare it away, but that bear did make off with some sandwiches that were packed in the cooler.

This encounter with the bear happened Monday, also in Tahoe City.

It is not known if the bears in both videos are the same.

While videos such as these can be fun to watch, it is a reminder that encounters between humans and black bears are increasing. Bears seem to be less wary around humans, regardless of how crowded the area is.

The Tahoe area, in general, is considered a "hot spot" for encounters, according to a report.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife is working on a new Black Bear Conservation Plan for California to help reduce the number of human-bear encounters.

A recent draft of the plan shows reports of human and black bear encounters jumped in 2021 and 2022 to an average of 1,678 a year compared with an average of 674 a year during 2017-2020.

Earlier this month, KCRA 3 Investigates reported confirmation of the first documented case of a deadly black bear attack on a human in California history .

The attack in November 2023 killed a 71-year-old woman in the Sierra County community of Downieville.

South Lake Tahoe doubles 4th of July fun with two days of parades and airshows

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Ca. (KRNV) — The City of South Lake Tahoe is expanding their 4th of July celebration from one to two days of festivities.

Festivities will kick off on Wednesday, July 3 with a static airshow at the Lake Tahoe Airport from 10:00 a.m.to 3:00 p.m. An impressive lineup of military aircraft will include Pave Hawk helicopters and a C130 Hercules transport aircraft. Plus, there will be tasty offerings from Sombreros Mexican Restaurant along with other family-friendly activities.

Next, join in on Thursday, July 4, for the Annual 4th of July parade starting at 9:00 a.m.

This year’s theme is “Stars and Stripes for service” to celebrate the dedication and spirit of our community’s volunteers. Enjoy a festive display of floats, performances, and patriotic pride to honor those who selflessly serve the community.

The parade will begin at 9:00 a.m. and head West from Ski Run Blvd. to Al Tahoe Blvd. along Highway 50, travel up Al Tahoe Blvd. and conclude at Bijou Community Park. Road closures will be in effect on the day of the parade beginning at 7:00 a.m. and will last throughout the entire parade. Expect roads to fully reopen by noon. Immediately following the parade will be the inaugural 4th of July Airshow over the Lake. The 129th Rescue Wing will showcase a spectacular rescue demonstration featuring Pave Hawk helicopters, pararescue team, and more. Don't miss this thrilling display of aerial skill and precision! The airshow will take place 1000 feet off Lakeview Commons beach. Swimming or boating will not be permitted in the area until after 1 p.m.
