Getting Started

How do online courses work? Online courses at Lewis University are administered through Blackboard, a learning management system, where you will find your class syllabus and calendar and be able to access your assignments, tests, and course discussions. You will be expected to log on frequently to complete course work. Each course is different, but work must be completed by certain deadlines, usually spaced week by week. You will also be responsible for participating in weekly discussions through the online discussion board in Blackboard.

Will I need to come to campus? The majority of online courses at Lewis University are delivered entirely online and will not necessitate students coming to campus. However, there are some online courses that will require you to come to campus for placement testing or for proctored exams.

Can I work at my own pace? Yes, but there are deadlines for assignments in each course. You can complete work at any time, as long as you meet deadlines each week. This means you will have to keep pace and ensure you are completing work regularly in order not to fall behind in the course. Schedules and due dates for course work will be posted in your syllabus.

What if I need help? While you may not be on campus, that doesn’t mean you’re not able to access resources the University provides. You can contact Service Desk for technology support, visit the Library online, or email your professor at any time. You can also visit lewisu.edu for other questions and inquiries.

QUICK TIPS before enrolling in an online course:

Online courses aren’t easier as they require active participation.

  • Online courses can be more work because you will largely work independently. Students can expect online courses to have the same rigor and expectations as face-to-face courses.
  • You will be expected to actively participate and discuss ideas covered in the course through discussion boards. Most online courses demand high level of participation as a part of the grade.

Online courses require time management skills and ample time investment.

  • Online courses may be convenient, but they have been designed to take about the same amount of time as you would spend if you were taking a traditional class.
  • For each credit hour, students should expect to spend an additional 2-3 hours a week doing homework, readings, and discussions. (For example, a 3-credit class would require 3 hours of class time, plus 6-9 hours of study, resulting in 9-12 hours weekly investment).

Online Courses

We also offer a variety of individual online classes throughout our undergraduate, adult accelerated undergraduate, and graduate programs.

If you are considering enrollment in an online course, take this Self-Assessment Survey .

Student Complaints & Appeals

Lewis University is committed to a policy of fair treatment of its students in their relationships with fellow students, faculty, staff and administrators. Students are encouraged to seek an informal resolution of a dispute directly with the faculty or individual(s) involved when possible. Dealing with concerns in the most direct and honest fashion should always be the first step toward resolution. Many problems are resolved when one makes an appointment with a faculty or staff member and communicates their concerns.

For matters where a resolution is not feasible, a student may make a formal appeal or complaint.  Please be assured that no adverse action will be taken against a student who files a formal appeal or complaint.

lewis university virtual tour

In today's digital age, virtual tours have become an essential tool for universities to attract and engage prospective students. By offering an immersive and interactive experience, universities can showcase their campus facilities, highlight key locations, and reach a global audience. This article will guide you through the steps to create an effective and engaging university virtual tour.

lewis university virtual tour

Key Takeaways

  • Virtual tours enhance student engagement by providing interactive and meaningful experiences.
  • High-quality visual content, including 360° photography and drone footage, is crucial for creating an immersive tour.
  • Interactive elements like clickable hotspots and multimedia content can significantly enrich the virtual tour experience.
  • Choosing the right virtual tour platform involves evaluating features, pricing, and customization options.
  • Promoting your virtual tour through various channels, including social media and email campaigns, can increase its visibility and reach.

Understanding the Importance of Virtual Tours for Universities

Virtual tours have become an essential tool for universities to connect with prospective students. They offer an immersive experience that allows students to explore the campus from anywhere in the world. This is particularly important in today's digital age, where students rely heavily on online resources to make informed decisions about their education.

Enhancing Student Engagement

Virtual tours can significantly enhance student engagement by providing an interactive and engaging way to explore the campus. Students can navigate through different locations, click on hotspots to learn more about specific areas , and even participate in live video chats. This level of interactivity helps to keep students interested and engaged, making them more likely to consider the university as a viable option.

Showcasing Campus Facilities

One of the key benefits of virtual tours is the ability to showcase campus facilities in a detailed and immersive way. Whether it's the state-of-the-art science labs, modern dormitories, or expansive sports facilities, virtual tours allow universities to highlight their best features. This can be particularly appealing to prospective students who want to get a feel for the campus environment before making a decision.

Reaching a Global Audience

Virtual tours enable universities to reach a global audience, attracting students from different parts of the world. This is especially important for institutions looking to diversify their student body and increase international enrollment. With virtual tours, students can explore the campus from the comfort of their own homes, making it easier for them to envision themselves as part of the university community.

Cloudpano for universities offers immersive 360º virtual tours for campuses, attracting diverse students globally. Technology-driven results show increased engagement and application flow. ADA-compliant tours accessible on any device.

Planning Your University Virtual Tour

Planning a university virtual tour involves several critical steps to ensure it is engaging and effective. Defining your audience personas and designing for your audience is essential to create a tour that resonates with prospective students. Additionally, understanding what a virtual tour is and how it can fit into your digital strategy will set a strong foundation for your project.

In today’s digital world, students rely on virtual tours to inform their college decision-making. This is why it’s so important to have an exceptional virtual tour that drives students to act.

Identifying Key Locations

Identifying key locations on campus that will be featured in the tour is crucial. Consider areas like the auditorium, dorm rooms, study areas, and popular dining spots. These locations should highlight the unique aspects of your campus and provide a comprehensive view of student life.

Creating a Narrative

Creating a narrative for your virtual tour helps in telling your university's unique story. This can be achieved by combining layered visual content with clickable elements to encourage visitor exploration. A well-crafted narrative will guide prospective students through the tour, making it more engaging and informative.

Setting Goals and Objectives

Setting clear goals and objectives for your virtual tour is vital. Determine what you want to achieve, whether it's increasing inquiries, boosting campus visit rates, or enhancing online presence and engagement. Having defined goals will help in measuring the success of your virtual tour and making necessary improvements.

Capturing High-Quality Visual Content

Using 360° photography.

360° photography is essential for creating immersive virtual tours. Select optimal shooting locations that offer the best perspectives of the place you are showcasing. Consider lighting, ambiance, and visual appeal when selecting locations. Use a tripod to keep your camera steady and frame your images or videos carefully. Avoid distortions by keeping your camera level and centered.

Incorporating Drone Footage

Drones can capture footage of hard-to-reach areas for aerial photography and videography of the location, such as rooftops, cliff faces, and large building interiors. This adds a unique perspective to your virtual tour, making it more engaging and comprehensive.

Optimizing Image Quality

With the display power, internet bandwidth, and camera capabilities that we are exposed to today, it’s no surprise that we crave high-quality experiences . From YouTube videos to Instagram posts, our threshold of what is considered acceptable quality is incredibly high compared to a few years ago. Videos are commonly streaming in HD or better, and many mobile devices can capture and display 4K photos and videos. The more life-like our content is, the more impact it has. Capturing ultra-high-resolution imagery, even if it can’t be fully displayed today, ensures that content can be rendered in higher resolutions down the road. Overall, investing in production quality will pay dividends.

For certain indoor spaces where artificial lighting plays an important role, shoot at dawn, dusk, or night where lighting is more prominent. For outdoor coverage such as a water park or courtyard, shooting the tour during peak summer is recommended. For exteriors and interiors with large window coverage, try to film these points of interest around dusk or dawn when interior/exterior lighting is evenly balanced for brilliant photos.

Integrating Interactive Elements

Integrating interactive elements into your university virtual tour can significantly enhance the user experience. Interactive hot spots and our API integrations can make that happen. The result is maps that no longer live solely in the digital space. Instead, they make themselves accessible to offline users in ways that most digital marketing efforts simply cannot. This seamless integration between in-person and virtual experiences leads to a natural prompt for interactivity.

Choosing the Right Virtual Tour Platform

Selecting the appropriate virtual tour platform is crucial for creating an engaging and seamless experience. Each platform offers unique features and benefits, from custom branding to interactive floor plans. Choosing the right virtual tour software can make a significant difference in the success of your university's virtual tour.

Evaluating Features and Pricing

When evaluating different platforms, consider the features they offer and their pricing structures. Some platforms provide advanced functionalities like virtual tour creator SDK and API , which allow you to create 360° virtual tours quickly and customize them easily. It's essential to balance the cost with the features you need to ensure you get the best value for your investment.

Considering User Experience

The user experience is a critical factor in the success of your virtual tour. Ensure the platform you choose is user-friendly and offers a smooth navigation experience. A platform that is easy to use will not only make the creation process more efficient but also enhance the overall experience for the visitors.

Exploring Customization Options

Customization options are vital for aligning the virtual tour with your university's branding and messaging. Look for platforms that offer extensive customization features, allowing you to tailor the tour to reflect your institution's unique identity. This can include custom branding, interactive elements, and personalized content.

A well-chosen virtual tour platform can significantly enhance the engagement and reach of your university's virtual tour, making it a valuable tool for attracting prospective students and showcasing your campus facilities.

Promoting Your Virtual Tour

Once you are satisfied with your virtual tour, you can publish it and start sharing it with your target audience. Most virtual tour platforms will provide you with a link to your tour , which you can then embed on your website or share through social media.

Analyzing Tour Performance and Engagement

To ensure your university virtual tour is effective, it's crucial to analyze its performance and engagement metrics. Tracking visitor metrics helps you understand how users interact with your tour, providing insights into areas for improvement.

Tracking Visitor Metrics

Visitor metrics are essential for gauging the success of your virtual tour. Key metrics to monitor include:

  • Session Time : The average time a visitor spends on your tour.
  • Pages Viewed : The number of different locations or sections a visitor explores.
  • Bounce Rate : The percentage of visitors who leave the tour after viewing only one page.

Gathering User Feedback

User feedback is invaluable for understanding the strengths and weaknesses of your virtual tour. Consider implementing the following methods to gather feedback:

  • Surveys : Short surveys at the end of the tour can provide direct insights from visitors.
  • Comments : Allowing users to leave comments on specific sections can highlight areas for improvement.
  • Ratings : A simple rating system can quickly show which parts of the tour are most and least popular.

Making Data-Driven Improvements

Once you have collected visitor metrics and user feedback, the next step is to make data-driven improvements. This involves:

  • Analyzing Trends : Look for patterns in the data to identify common issues or popular features.
  • Implementing Changes : Based on your analysis, make targeted changes to enhance the user experience.
  • Continuous Monitoring : Regularly review the performance metrics to ensure ongoing improvement.

By focusing on these key areas, you can create a more engaging and effective virtual tour that meets the needs of prospective students and other visitors.
