"In babies who are prone to diaper rash, I recommend zinc oxide diaper ointment with every diaper change," says Jody A. Levine, M.D ., a pediatrician and dermatologist in New York City and former Head of Pediatric Dermatology at Montefiore Hospital. Zinc oxide-based diaper creams, petrolatum balms and oil-based balms can all form a seal that helps keep wetness out, so our list includes all three. But Dr. Levine says that zinc oxide formulations are best at protecting the skin from further damage. "In addition, zinc's anti-inflammatory properties help the skin heal," Levine says.

One exception: If your baby's diaper rash is not going away or it's getting worse, they might have a yeast or bacterial infection. Visit the pediatrician to ask if you need a topical anti-fungal cream or a baby-appropriate antibiotic. The American Academy of Pediatrics urges parents to have a doctor look at a stubborn rash — and not be tempted to treat serious rashes with adult products. It's always safest to have your pediatrician prescribe treatment for your baby.

Aside from the funny "butt paste" name, parents appreciate that this thick formula doesn't just absorb right into a baby's skin; it provides a soothing layer of protection all night . "I like that Boudreaux's is so creamy and goes on smoothly," one tester told us.

There are three other formulations from this brand, including one with aloe for cooling — those are each for a more mild diaper rash. "We were a max-strength family," says Rachel Rothman , the Good Housekeeping Institute's chief technologist and a mom of three. This fast-acting version in the red box contains 40% zinc oxide, and we found it to be very effective at clearing up most diaper rashes within about 24 hours when used at every diaper change. The brand's Original Formula is made with 16% zinc oxide and the brand's Butt Barrier (made to prevent more than treat) has 1% zinc oxide.

We like that this brand is easy to find in most drugstores and mass merchants, and the price is very reasonable. Our only complaint is that if you get this on clothing, bedding or any fabric, be prepared: Since it is oil-based, it can stain fabrics. This is a common problem with most diaper rash creams, so be sure to read our tips below on removing diaper rash cream stains out of clothing and upholstery.

Walmart's house brand is the least expensive diaper rash cream that we've found , and it contains 40% zinc oxide, the same concentration as our favorite brand. If you're on a budget and your baby is prone to rashes, this can be a real money-saver. It's not as creamy as some other formulations (users have described it as "a little watery"), but it's not as sticky as a some others either, so in terms of consistency, it's a good middle ground.

One word of warning for anyone who prefers strictly plant-based ingredients: This formulation uses petrolatum, lanolin (a wool alcohol and common allergen), beeswax and cod liver oil. That's actually not that uncommon; the longtime brand A + D Ointment uses petrolatum and cod liver oil too. This diaper rash cream also has added fragrance, important to know if you're trying to stick to fragrance-free products for sensitive skin.

We've sung the praises of this ointment before; it's a moisturizing skin protectant recommended for people of all ages. After changing your baby's diaper, pat their skin clean and dry, and finish up with a thin layer of Aquaphor, which forms a moisture-resistant barrier that helps keep wetness — and therefore skin irritation — away.

Its active ingredient is petrolatum, another word for petroleum jelly. So this is a sticky ointment, but that stickiness is part of what holds it to skin so well. Inactive ingredients include moisturizing mineral oil and glycerin.

"Anywhere you turn in my home, you’ll find Aquaphor," says Rothman, who has used this for healing all sorts of dry skin patches on her kids, removing her own makeup, and treating her husband's eczema-prone elbows. The 14-ounce tub is nice and lasting but there's a smaller tube as well.

Just remember: Aquaphor doesn't so much treat a rash as work to prevent it. If your baby gets a diaper rash despite you using this barrier cream, use one of our cream recommendations that contain zinc oxide to heal it more quickly.

Triple Paste Diaper Rash Cream

The "triple" in the name of this one refers to three main ingredients. Zinc oxide helps clear up a rash, oat extract is included for soothing a rash, and beeswax and petrolatum work together to form a barrier to prevent future rashes.

There's no added fragrance and the formulation is fairly scent-neutral, so it's great if your child has sensitive skin and you're trying to avoid extra ingredients that might cause irritation. But note that this is another cream that does include lanolin, thought to cause wool-based skin allergies.

This is a thick cream—or rather, paste is the more appropriate term to describe the texture of this product. "I like when I can see sunscreen as I put it on my child, and similarly I like that I can see this when I spread it on — the whiteness doesn't absorb right away and I can tell when I've covered the entire rash," one mom told us.

It does also come in a smaller tube that easily fits in a diaper bag. Though Triple Paste has the highest price tag on our list, it's not the most expensive per ounce.

Boogie Bottoms Diaper Rash Cream Spray

Maybe the worst thing about rash cream is that you have to spread it on with your fingers, then diaper your baby and get them somewhere safe before you can clean yourself off. We love that Boogie has a zinc oxide formulation that you can spray on for minimal handling .

"I found this to be life-changing. I've given it to everyone who has recently had a baby," one mom told us. "My son was always super wriggly and diaper changes were like wrestling matches so being able to strategically squirt was major. Plus, your fingers don't get greasy so you're never tempted to take your hands off the baby during diaper changes."

The 25% zinc oxide is effective on most regular diaper rashes. The main complaint over time is that the sprayer can sometimes get stuck and users have to fuss with it to keep it easily spritzing.

Desitin Maximum Strength

In our extensive testing, we've found this is effective at clearing up even a severe rash. You'll sometimes hear grandparents refer to all diaper rash creams as "Desitin" as if that's a generic name. That's because this cream has been around for nearly 100 years, so it's gained a lot of trust among pediatricians, nurses and caregivers — plus it's received over 23K five-star Amazon reviews and it's sold at drugstores and mass-merchants everywhere.

Desitin is perhaps a little more complicated than other creams, with a few ingredients that some parents may object to. It contains cod liver oil so it's not strictly plant-based and it also has the mineral talc, which is no longer used in baby powder but is in Desitin to help prevent chafing. Desitin also has the allergen lanolin and added fragrance, which some families like but others do not. Added up, some families will find this to be exactly what they were looking for to treat a severe rash, and others might choose to skip it.

Earth Mama Organic Diaper-Area Balm Two-Pack

Certified organic by the USDA, free of preservatives and entirely plant-based, Earth Mama's balm sold in plastic pots that can be recycled is for families who want to stick to organic ingredients for their baby . There's no petroleum or zinc oxide included; instead, this is largely a multipurpose family balm — powered by a long list of oils, extracts and shea butter — that can be used on tushies.

There is definitely a scent to this balm, but it's not an added fragrance, it's the natural scent of lavender oil and a type of olive oil. Dr. Levine prefers a zinc-oxide product to clear up a diaper rash quickly, but using this organic balm at each and every diaper change provides some prevention. The small pots are easy to fit in a bag or take along on travels before you reuse or recycle them.

Pinxav Diaper Rash Ointment

Retro packaging and a deceptively simple name (it's pronounced "pink salve") help this brand stand out, though it's powered by the same zinc oxide as our other favorite diaper rash treatments. A point of difference is its list of cooling ingredients that help soothe a painful rash , including aloe vera gel, menthol and eucalyptol.

Because this cools and forms a barrier against chafing, it's popular among athletes, anyone suffering from sunburn and even older adults who have bed sores. The cream is, in fact, pink, so it looks different from the white creams and clear balms that make up the rest of our list.

Created by a family- and female-run business, it can be a little harder to find on drugstore shelves but it has been growing in popularity in recent years.

Burt's Bees Baby Diaper Rash Ointment Two-Pack

Burt's Bees Baby combines the medicinal power of zinc oxide with a list of skin-calming plant-based ingredients to create a nice blend of treatment and soothing that heals rashes well.

Our testers particularly like the scent (which comes primarily from the almond oil and lavender oil ingredients) and some are fans of the entire Burt's Bees Baby line, which tends to garner brand loyalty.

A head-up that the packaging uses the term "natural," which is an unregulated beauty-industry term that rarely means what it implies. While the brand claims the product to be of 100% natural origin, we have not come across any 3rd party certifications to support this on their website. However, it does include soothing plant-based ingredients, such as shea butter, lavender oil and jojoba seed oil, and Burt's Bees prides itself in never testing on animals.

How we test diaper rash creams

We have tested more than 20 diaper rash creams in the Good Housekeeping Institute over the last 10 years. We also lean heavily on the hundreds of consumer testers who report home results for not just diaper rash creams but baby lotions, washes and shampoos.

This final list of the best diaper rash creams includes top performers that are formulated with zinc oxide or petrolatum as active ingredients or rely on plant-based ingredients. Most are formulated with FDA-approved actives and all are marketed for use with babies.

Many diaper-rash products list things they do not have, ingredients such as talc, dyes and parabens, which depending on the type are banned or restricted in beauty products sold in the European Union. We based our recommendations on performance and did not vet that such ingredient-based claims are substantiated.

When families test a diaper rash cream, we ask how quickly and how well it worked to heal a rash, if they felt it helped prevent future rashes, if it was easy to use on their baby's skin, if they liked the smell and consistency and if it was easy to clean off of their own hands.

What to look for when shopping for the best diaper rash cream

Whether your baby is currently dealing with a rash or you're looking to prevent one, here's what you might want to consider:

✔️ Medication: Zinc oxide is the most-often-used ingredient to treat a diaper rash. The higher the concentration of zinc oxide, the faster the cream might work to heal a rash. However, if your baby doesn't currently have a rash and you're just looking to prevent future rashes, you don't need a cream with a high zinc oxide content at every diaper change. Also if your baby tends to only get a very light rash, you can reach for a cream that is not labeled maximum strength or for a balm that uses petrolatum or essential oils.

If your pediatrician diagnoses your baby's rash as caused by yeast or bacteria, the doctor will prescribe something with a different medication such as an anti-fungal like miconazole or clotrimazole. Those are not needed to treat a regular diaper rash and should only be used under a doctor's direction.

What causes diaper rash?

A diaper rash is an angry-looking red rash on your baby's bum or genitals . If your baby is in a wet diaper for a long period of time, a diaper rash is likely to result.

But all kinds of other factors can bring on a diaper rash too. Truthfully, diaper rashes are super common. It's rare that you meet a family who says their baby reached their first birthday without ever having one!

This is just a partial list of triggers that can contribute to diaper rash, reviewed by Dr. Levine:

• A diaper that's too tight, not just one that's been left on too long, can lead to chafing and a rash. • When your baby learns to sit, crawl or cruise, friction between their diaper and their skin might increase and that can spark a diaper rash. • If it's hot and your baby is battling heat along with normal diaper wetness and friction, that's often a recipe for rash. • If your baby is taking antibiotics for strep throat or other health reasons, this can unfortunately make a diaper rash a bit more likely. • A change in diet, whether it's a breastfeeding mom eating something different or the baby trying new solid foods, can lead to a rash when the baby passes the new food out. • Chocolate milk, with its combo of sugar and cow's milk, can trigger a diaper rash, as can highly acidic foods such as orange juice. If your toddler is suffering from diaper rash, pay attention to their diet and consider holding off on acidic fruits until your child is older, Dr. Levine says. • Teething can contribute to diaper rash because a teething baby swallows more saliva than usual, and eventually that has to come out the other end. • If your baby is suffering from diarrhea, that contains more harsh digestive enzymes and can lead to a rash (also it's messy, so it can cover more skin surface). • Sometimes alcohol or fragrance in a wipe or a new-to-you detergent will lead to skin irritation in the diaper area. A highly fragranced bath soap or bubble bath can cause problems too. Mild, baby-safe formulas are recommended for anything that touches your baby's skin. • Eczema-prone babies and toddlers are more sensitive overall and might be more likely to suffer from diaper rash. • Fiercely independent potty trainers who want to wipe themselves may not do a great job and might get a diaper rash, even if they're in training pants and not diapers.

Also, it's not just a baby's bum and private parts that can get red and rashy. You might notice a rash above your baby's lip when they have a runny nose or on their chin if they drool a lot. • Give your baby a quick bath in just water , no soap. For more gentle diaper changes, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests using a squirt bottle filled with room-temperature water to wash away urine or feces instead of using a wipe. Then let their skin air dry.

• In fact, expose your baby's bum to air for as long as you dare. Give them some naked playtime on a washable blanket (in case they pee). Giving the rash a break from the stifling diaper environment will help clear it up.

How to treat fabric stains caused by diaper rash cream

We're grateful for diaper rash creams, which save our babies from a lot of discomfort and pain, but we dread trying to get it off our hands, the changing pad cover and the baby's sheets or clothes.

We turned to Carolyn Forté , the executive director of the Good Housekeeping Institute's Home Care & Cleaning Lab, for advice on removing an oil-based stain caused by a diaper rash cream:

"For washable clothing fabrics, you should pretreat it like any grease stain. You could rub in some grease-cutting dish liquid, like a few drops of Dawn , directly on the stain, or use a prewash spray or liquid laundry detergent, and then wash the item in the hottest water that's safe for the fabric," Forté says.

What if it gets on the couch? "Water-safe upholstery can be spot-cleaned with a few drops of dish liquid or a commercial upholstery cleaner," Forté says. For non-washables, it's best to take clothing to a dry cleaner or call in an upholstery cleaner. You can sprinkle some baking soda or cornstarch on a fresh stain to try to absorb some of the oil, then brush it off.

"Finally, there's a Sunbrella Stain Remover we just tested that works really well on grease and oil stains," Forté says. It can be worth trying if a stubborn stain from a cream is not going away.

Instagram and TikTok are full of skincare and beauty hacks. Among them? A claim that diaper rash cream can cure and soothe acne via "face basting" (aka "skin basting"). In an Instagram video posted by user Farah Dhukai , the beauty vlogger demonstrates how baby diaper rash cream used as an overnight spot treatment or as a full face mask acts as an "acne killer." But is it true?

Internet beauty fads are one thing, but when it comes to skincare you want to be more careful before you go experimenting. And as you might suspect, commenters have mixed opinions about smearing diaper rash cream on your face. To learn more, we turned to aesthetic physician Leslie Gerstman and physician assistant Ananda Fidani, MPAP, PA-C, who shared their professional insight into face basting.

As its name suggests, diaper rash cream is a cream meant to treat diaper rashes. "Different brands have different ingredients, but the main ingredients are zinc and petroleum," says Dr. Gertsman. "Zinc oxide is known to act as a mild astringent, helping control oil production," says Fidani. "Zinc oxide also has anti-microbial properties and anti-inflammatory properties. This is why it is often added to diaper creams and other soothing creams worldwide as it has a calming effect and can lessen redness and the 'angriness' of the flare-up area," she explains.

Meanwhile, petroleum is a protective agent. "It's almost like having cellophane on the skin," says Dr, Gertsman. This is good for babies, but not necessarily for those with acne (more on that, below).

The Benefits of Diaper Rash Cream for Acne

"It makes sense that a cream with a high concentration of zinc oxide would help acne," Fidani tells us.  Some people notice similar benefits (read: less inflammation) when using sunscreen with zinc, she adds. "So, it is not actually the cream itself of the diaper cream that is helping, it is the active ingredient zinc oxide that is alleviating the symptoms," says Fidani.

What Is "Face Basting?"

Similar to slugging , "skin basting" or "face basting" locks moisture into the skin. It can do this with diaper cream, which has also been reported to help with acne, Fidani says. "Now, this moisture-locking property of skin basting is likely from the base of the diaper cream and this is where things can get sticky for acne-prone skin," she adds.

"For adult skin and non-acne prone skin, the rich moisture-locking ingredients in diaper cream such as triple paste can help 'occlude' or lock in the underlying skin products placed on the skin," Fidani says. "For instance, if serums are layered onto the skin, and then moisturizers, and then diaper cream is placed on top, this rich cream will help lock in the underlying products."

Why You Shouldn't Use Diaper Rash Cream for Acne

Although diaper cream has ingredients known to lock in moisture—white petrolatum, lanolin, beeswax, glycerin —these same ingredients can also be comedogenic, or pore-clogging, says Fidani.

"[In pimples,] there's a lot of inflammation and bacteria and it needs to be healed," Dr. Gertsman explains. Because of this, applying diaper rash cream formulated with occlusive petroleum is problematic, especially when you have acne. "That's why it's not a good idea," says Dr. Gertsman. "Basically you're taking oily, inflated, and potentially infected skin and putting a barrier on it and potentially making it worse."

Despite its proponents on social media, "skin basting" with diaper cream should not be your go-to acne-fighting hack. "For short-term helpful results, it could cause long-term complications like pore clogging and residual acne," says Fidani. She recommends switching to a non-comedogenic acne care product instead.

Her favorite? Avene Cicalfate , which is formulated for the face with acne-fighting ingredients, including zinc oxide. "Avene Cicalfate can help heal acne areas that were picked as well as dry parched skin...It is used to restore the skin barrier, hydrates the skin, and protects the skin. It is recommended for all skin types with clinical studies to support the claims," says Fidani. If "skin basting" with the product, use one to two times per week, she says.

As much as we love a good skincare hack, it's important to do your research before acting as a guinea pig. As we learned from diaper rash cream as a facial treatment, while zinc oxide wields benefits for acne-prone skin, certain occlusives, like white petrolatum, do not.

"My advice for people who come across these viral skin hacks is to take them with a grain of salt," says Fidani. "Although in theory, they seem like they may work, there may be long-term implications or some side effects that aren’t discussed. Always check in with your local board-certified dermatologist or skincare provider to be sure you are not hurting yourself in the long run."

Conventional products can be loaded with petroleum and many diaper rash creams can even ruin cloth diapers . But—don’t worry—it’s not as complicated as it sounds.

The Best Diaper Rash Creams

How to Make a DIY Diaper Rash Cream

The organic diaper rash balms can be quite pricey. Luckily, there are some worthy DIY options, including: 

• Plain coconut oil: This has worked for me time and time again! Because coconut oil is antimicrobial, antibacterial and antiviral, it does a great job with rashes and irritations.
• Breast milk: The ultimate elixir, breast milk can soothe and heal skin. Simply express milk onto the rash and let air dry. Just avoid if you suspect yeast as the cause of the diaper rash—the milk sugars can spur further yeast growth.
• Extra virgin olive oil: Wonderful for soothing skin, and even better for moisturizing rough skin. It provides a nice barrier to help baby’s bottom heal. Plus, it’s safe for cloth diapers (won’t cause urine to repel). Just use sparingly, since they are oils. And, to be safe, use a liner or disposable diaper instead.
• Non-GMO cornstarch: Mix a tablespoon of organic corn starch with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Be sure to get non-GMO cornstarch, like these . And don’t use this remedy for a yeasty rash.
• Kefir or live (plain) yogurt: Dab a bit onto a yeasty diaper rash to help clear it.  
• Raw apple cider vinegar : Dabbing a bit of apple cider vinegar onto a yeasty rash functions the same way as the yogurt or kefir.

Alternatively, if you’ve got a little time on your hands, you can whip up a more involved  batch of your own diaper rash cream fairly easily. 

Homemade diaper rash cream recipe

What you need:

• 1/2 cup  ethically-sourced natural beeswax pellets
• 2/3 cup  organic coconut oil
• 2/3 cup raw  shea butter
• 10 drops tea tree  essential oil (helps fight yeast)
• 10 drops lavender essential oil (soothing to skin)

What to do:

• Melt the beeswax pellets, coconut oil, and shea butter in a double boiler.
• Remove from heat.
• Let cool (but not harden).
• Add the essential oils.
• Whip with your hand mixer until the mixture is thick, whipped, and creamy.
• Store in a glass jar in a cool, dry area.

What About Desitin?

Desitin is a popular diaper rash cream, thanks to its high zinc oxide content. It’s a powerful paste that wipes out diaper rash stat.

The problem? Desitin is rated as a 4 in the Environmental Working Group database , but some individual ingredients rate up to a 5. These scores classify Desitin as a “moderate hazard.” Not exactly what you want to hear when you think about applying it to your baby’s delicate bum. 

According to EWG, the highest concerns include:

• Irritation to your baby’s eyes and skin
• Organ toxicity
• Irritation to lungs

The Maximum Strength version is even worse. As a whole, EWG ranks it as a 4, but the list of ingredients is worse. The Maximum Strength Desitin contains fragrance (ranked as an 8!), talc (which is known to contain asbestos fibers), and petroleum. ( source ) 

Beware of Greenwashing Brands…

There are some popular “natural” brands out there that may look like a good choice at first glance. Unfortunately, though, greenwashing is just as prevalent in diaper creams as it is in other products, like makeup.

Honest Diaper is probably one of the most common choices among parents trying to choose a cleaner diaper rash cream, but it’s a choice that should give you pause. Their diaper rash cream contains zinc oxide, which can tackle a rash, but ruin your cloth diapers. It also contains castor oil, which can irritate babies with eczema or contact dermatitis.  ( source )

Maty’s is another organic company that is popping up in many retail stores (including Whole Foods). They offer a variety of products from all-natural cough syrups to diaper creams. Although Maty’s is much better than most conventional diaper creams, note that it is only 99% organic. It also includes castor oil and zinc. This may not the best option if you cloth diaper, as zinc can build up and make your diapers less absorbent. 

Preventing Diaper Rash in the First Place

The bottom line: Though diaper rash cream is great for treating flare-ups, the best way to treat diaper rash is to try and prevent it. It’s not always possible, but these are the best tips for reducing the risk of diaper rashes: 

• Go diaper free when possible. This helps air out baby’s bottom. Warm, moist areas are more prone to rashes.
• Change baby’s diaper more often. Some babies just get diaper rashes more easily than others. If your baby seems to have extra sensitive skin, try adding a few extra diaper changes into the day to keep baby’s bottom as fresh and dry as possible.
• Air dry. Let your baby’s bottom air dry before putting a diaper back on after changes.
• Don’t fasten the diaper too tightly. This can limit air flow and increase the risk of a rash.

I notice that when I use store bought baby wipes, my babies have been more prone to diaper rash, than when I use homemade wipes. So I try to stick to homemade (coconut oil, lavender oil, tea tree oil, water, paper towel). But, when there is a rash, I use a HAIR DRYER to completely dry out the skin BEFORE air time or putting a diaper back on. Air time alone does not help because in between the cheeks does not get exposed. The key is to dry out the skin.

Ora’s Amazing Herbal salve contains comfrey in it which is known to cause liver damage. It is toxic when absorbed by the skin or ingested.

You have included information that is not accurate. Castor oil does not irritate babies with eczema and/or contact dermatitis. In fact, castor oil has been used for centuries to treat myriad skin conditions and disorders. My experience making diaper cream with zinc is that it has not harmed my cloth diapers.

My baby is quite prone to rashes, which I guess is because of her diet. She eats a lot of fruits which are often acidic.

Parents are looking for information on more store-brand diapers, so I’ve put together this Aldi diaper review to answer your questions! 

Low-cost grocery store Aldi launched its Little Journey line of baby products in the summer of 2016. Although it’s been around for some time, parents like you want to know about the quality of Little Journey diapers, and for good reason. Diapers, along with formula, are expensive! Your baby will use thousands of diapers before potty training,  so every penny makes a difference! 

Aldi diaper review summary

Overall, Aldi diapers are good for store brand diapers. They absorb well, fit well, and have wetness indicators. That is to say, they will work just fine for most children.

However, if your child is prone to diaper rash, diaper blowouts, or diaper leaks, I recommend investigating a name-brand or specialized diaper for your child’s needs

Little Journey diapers are less soft than name brand diapers like Huggies and Pampers. But the softness is similar to the softness of other store brand

Wetness Indicator  

Aldi diapers do have a wetness indicator that’s visible on the front and back. Like many other diaper brands, it starts out yellow and turns blue when it gets wet. This feature is helpful for infants who need frequent diaper changes.

Waistband 

Like most store-brand diapers, Little Journey diapers do not have an elastic waistband. This is usually fine for most babies, but if your baby has diaper blowouts, try a brand like Huggies or Costco to keep the mess contained!

Leg cuffs help keep the diaper snug against your baby’s thighs and prevent leaks. The leg cuffs on Aldi diapers are pretty sturdy. My daughter did not have any leaks out the legs even when wearing them overnight!

Aldi diaper review- Fit

Aldi diapers are very bulky! They are even longer than Huggies, which are sort of baggy to begin with! The Aldi diapers will hang down more between your child’s legs. This isn’t necessarily a problem, but is one of the downsides to a store brand diaper.

Size up indicators  

Little Journey diapers do not have size up indicators like other brands such as Target’s Up & Up, Pampers, and Huggies.

Size up indicators are a useful feature that let parents know when their baby is ready to move up a size. However, you can tell when to change diaper sizes without the indicators. Check if the diaper leaves red marks on your baby’s stomach, back, or legs. This means the diaper is too tight, and it’s time to change sizes. Or, if your baby’s diaper tends to leak, it may mean the diaper is too small and time to go up a size!

Diaper Tabs

Like some other store brand diapers, Aldi diaper tabs leave a lot to be desired. The only sticky-velcro part is the area between my two fingers, which is about a quarter of an inch wide!

That being said, I did not have any issues with my daughter pulling off the diaper, or the diaper falling off.

Aldi Diaper Review- Absorbance 

Time for the fun science test! I mixed some green food coloring with water, and poured it into the diaper 1/4 cup (60 ml) at a time to see how much it would absorb!

After about four cups of water, the diaper stopped absorbing water quickly. It would puddle up on top of the diaper or in between the leg cuff and the diaper pad, and then soak up after a few seconds.

After 5 cups of water, the Little Journey diaper was full!

But what does that mean?

Aldi diapers are not particularly absorbent compared to other brands. I’ve tested a number of brands, like Target’s Up & Up diapers, and they hold much more water- 7 cups for a size 5! That’s 29% more.

All parents know: diaper rash requires immediate attention! We want to bring fast healing and relief, right away. Of course there are lots of commercial options to choose from. But, those contain unnatural ingredients like petroleum based oils that actually promote inflammation, as well as other nasty things ( source ).

When it comes to healing diaper rash, natural ingredients always work best. And it’s so important to avoid toxic ingredients when choosing products to use on babies! They are much more sensitive to toxins than we are.

This diaper rash cream recipe includes super healing, natural ingredients. Coconut oil, bentonite clay, zinc oxide, and grass fed tallow balm relieve rashes quickly and have little ones happy again in no time.

I’ve made several diaper rash cream recipes. Over time I’ve perfected it, and this version is the very best of all of them.

One version contained plant based oils and zinc oxide. Eventually I learned that bentonite clay is a great addition. I also discovered that tallow balm works wonders at healing diaper rash, so of course I had to include that.

Diaper rash cream mixture

The full recipe as I’ve included here isn’t the best for use with cloth diapers. This is only because the zinc oxide tends to stay in cloth diapers and not wash out. Over time this can cause absorbency issues.

But, there is a quick solution! If you want to use this diaper rash cream with cloth diapers, I recommend leaving the zinc oxide out. It will still work very well, and you won’t have to worry about the wellbeing of your cloth diapers.

Safe essential oils for diaper rash

When it comes to essential oils and babies, is definitely best to play it very safe. Only certain essential oils can be used on babies, and they must be diluted properly.

Essential oils recommended for diaper rash

For this diaper rash cream recipe, it’s best to use gentle essential oils that have skin soothing and healing properties. Lavender, chamomile, and frankincense are great options. I really like the Silky Soft essential oil blend from Plant Therapy , and that’s what I use when I make this diaper rash cream recipe.

The best diaper rash cream recipe directions

I love this diaper rash cream! When you have as many kids as I do, you need a cost effective solution that works. 

Here is how you make my favorite DIY diaper rash cream…

Ingredients:

• 4 oz. grass fed tallow balm
• 2 oz. coconut oil
• 1 oz. non nano zinc oxide
• 1 oz. bentonite clay
• 0.5 oz. beeswax
• 12 drops essential oils

Instructions:

• In a heat safe bowl or measuring pitcher, weight tallow balm, coconut oil, zinc oxide, bentonite clay, and beeswax.
• Create a double boiler by placing the heat safe container in a pan of water.
• Heat to a gentle simmer until all ingredients are melted.
• Stir to combine well.
• Remove from heat, and add essential oils.
• Pour into a glass storage container and allow to cool to room temperature.

Homemade vs. commercial diaper rash cream

Let’s take a look at each of the ingredients, and how they work to heal diaper rash:

• Zinc oxide creates a barrier to keep moisture and irritants off of skin so that it can heal.
• Bentonite clay is healing, soothing, detoxifying, and antibacterial.
• Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties.
• 100% grass fed tallow balm is amazing for healing and soothing skin, and contains an abundance of skin friendly nutrients. It is also anti inflammatory and antimicrobial. Tallow balm can heal diaper rash very quickly even just by itself!
• Beeswax creates a waterproof barrier to keep moisture away from skin while it heals.
• A blend of baby safe, skin healing essential oils help to calm skin and heal it quickly . The essential oils also help to get rid of unwanted microbes.

Commonly available commercial diaper rash creams contain some not so good ingredients. As I mentioned before, these can include include petroleum based oils, which actually promote inflammation and don’t help skin to heal. They can also contain things like medications, which we don’t really want on our baby’s skin. Remember how rapidly the skin absorbs anything that is put on it? This definitely goes for anything that is in a diaper rash cream.

Babies are so much smaller and more sensitive than we are. It’s especially important to be safe and only use completely natural ingredients on their skin.

Rather than grabbing a commercial diaper cream, it’s really easy to put together the best diaper rash cream recipe. This way, you’ll be healing your little one’s skin with nourishing, natural ingredients that are safe and very effective.

What cures diaper rash quickly?

Calming, nourishing butters like tallow balm, olive oil, and coconut oil soothe skin. Zinc oxide creates a barrier to give skin a chance to heal. Bentonite clay soothes and pulls irritation away from skin. 

All of the ingredients in this recipe are by weight. You might notice that I use tallow balm and not straight tallow in this recipe. That just means that a small amount of olive oil has been added to the tallow to help keep it soft and easily spreadable. Learn how to make tallow balm here.

When shopping for zinc oxide to use in this recipe, I recommend non nano zinc oxide . This is a safer choice than nano zinc oxide, because the particles are large enough to not be absorbed into the skin.
