Macao Beach (Playa Macao) Favorite beach in Punta Cana

Macao Beach horseback riding in Punta Cana Dominican Republic

Macao Beach (or Playa Macao in Spanish) is an unreal Dominican beach! Not only is it amazing, but it’s easily accessible and features all the amenities you would want without requiring you to book an all-inclusive.

Most of the best Punta Cana beaches have all-inclusive resorts built up and down them. This is super convenient if you book one because you can likely have an awesome trip without leaving your resort. If you don’t book an all-inclusive though, it can be much more difficult.

Playa Macao somehow doesn’t feature a ton of all-inclusives along its gorgeous shores (only one main one). This ultimately means hardly anyone visits! The stunning beach and lack of crowds made it me and my husbands favorite beach in Punta Cana .

Sacrifice the Amenities of an All-Inclusive?

Avoiding crowds

Playa macao faq:, macao beach quick info :.

  • Where: Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (35 minutes north of the main Punta Cana area)
  • Amenities:  A few restaurants and vendors on the beach
  • Rentals: Boogie board, paddle board rentals, chair, and umbrella rentals.
  • Parking: free street parking
  • Available excursions:  Surf lessons

What makes Macao Beach so special?

The Dominican Republic has so many amazing all-inclusive resorts that guests tend to spend their whole trip on. The cluster of resorts means that most of the visitors cluster in these areas.

The people clustered at the resorts is a HUGE advantage for those looking to avoid the crowds. Most people never leave their resort property, which leaves tons of open space for you on Playa Macao!

At the main entrance you will find other people an amenities that you can take advantage of, BUT if you are willing to walk a couple hundred yards along the sand you will find yourself almost entirely along on your own stretch of pristine beach!

I love a Dominican all-inclusive! For those looking for unlimited food and drinks, I include some of my favorite recommendations below!

While the beaches that back up to the most popular all-inclusive resorts are technically public, it can be hard to access them. Parking can be hard to find, the amenities can be for registered guests only, and even the entrances can be hidden.

If you are trying to save some money or have another sort of accommodation, you can still have an epic beach experience. Playa Macao is your ticket!

What To Expect At Playa Macao

Even amongst all the amazing Dominican beaches, Playa Macao is my favorite!

It offers a wide stretch of gorgeous sand and perfect clear blue water. There is even a cliff line making the views even more striking! Honestly, the pictures just don’t even do it justice. It’s one of those beaches you have to see to understand.

Macao Beach Resorts

If you are looking to stay in Punta Cana, without staying in the busy part of Punta Cana then you might what to look into staying at one of the Macao Beach resorts. There are not many to choose from but that is actually what makes Macao beach so special and more remote.

The beachfront Dreams Macao Beach Resort is the best resort and the one I would choose.

Dreams Macao Beach Punta Cana Resort

*Best Option, Beachfront – Dreams Macao Beach Punta Cana is the most popular one located right on the beach. This is the best hotel in the area simply because of the location. You are literally steps away from one of the most beautiful and remote beaches I have ever seen. Book here.

Read the Dreams Macao reviews here .

Where is Macao Beach located?

Macao Beach, or Playa Macao, is a located in Punta Cana, in the La Altagracia east region of the Dominican Republic, between Bavaro and Uvero Alto.

It is roughly a 30-35 minute drive from the main resort area in Bavaro, Punta Cana.

Parking is free and easy. There is a lot right off the beach and we didn’t have any issues getting a spot. Beach access is also FREE. If a local tells you you have to pay, he is trying to scam you.

When we arrived to park there was a section of parking closest to the beach that was barricaded off. My husband asked if it was free and he said yes. He moved the barricade and we gave him $1 USD for a tip.

When you go to leave the locals have to move the barricade. It is kind of a weird set up and I wasn’t really sure what was going on, but they did not give us any problems. When they saw we were leaving he ran over and moved the barricade. (See photo below)

I definitely got the feeling that it was just a random local who was trying to run the parking lot for money.

What to Expect at Macao Beach

  • Sand: Fine golden sand
  • Swimming Conditions: There are waves and currents that can at times get dangerous. Good for body boarding, surfing and swimming.
  • Length: Macao beach is about 3 miles (4km) long
  • Cover: There are palm trees for shade or you can rent an umbrella and beach chair

Swimming Conditions

When we were there (June) the waves were honestly perfect! It was easy to swim and enjoy the water. There were lots of kids boogie boarding and some trying to surf. At times, I have read the waves and currents can get really strong. So be careful.

Beach Vendors

There are beach vendors walking up and down the beach trying to get you to take a photo with a monkey or a parrot for money. This is the same on all the beaches we went to in Punta Cana and La Romana . We always said no and they moved on pretty quickly.

Macao Beach is one of the best Punta Cana surf spots

If you are interested in Dominican Republic surfing Macao beach is perfect for you. This is one of the only beaches in Punta Cana that has waves large enough for surfing.

Whether you’re wanting to take surf lessons or already an expert surfer, you’ll be able to catch some waves here. You can also rent a boogie board or paddle board to ride the waves.

If you are interested you can book your surf lessons here.

Macao Beach Private Surf Immersion (Multiple-Days Lessons)

There are paddle board and boogie board rentals, bathrooms and restaurants with picnic tables.

Macao Beach amenities in Punta Cana Dominican Republic

There are not a lot of resort hotels on the beach which means hardly anyone visits! However, in order to truly avoid the crowds you will need to walk further down the beach.

The beach is 3 miles long and almost everyone is located right at the entrance. Walk a couple hundred yards down and you will have your own little piece of paradise.

Best Macao Beach Excursions

There are a number of beach excursions and activities offered here.

  • Horseback riding on the beach
  • Surf lessons – beginner friendly. Book here.
  • Dune Buggy & Country side experience – this excursion is one of the most popular, lasts for approx 4 hrs and offers hotel pickup. It ends at Macao beach. Book here.
  • 4×4 Dominican Adventure with Chocolate and Coffee Tasting – Read the reviews here.

Things to be aware of before visiting

The locals can come on strong.

The entrance of the beach is full of people trying to sell you things. It can feel overwhelming but if you show them you are really not interested they back off. Or just completely ignore them, they will go away.

They also (from my experience) did not speak very much English.

There was a man trying to sell me an umbrella and beach chair and he followed me a ways down to the beach. Finally I said, “I only speak English” and he just walked away. I never felt threatened or unsafe, just something to be aware if you are going.

I was also a solo female walking in so I felt like I must have looked like an easy target. My husband walked in after me and no one tried to sell him anything.

Tip when dealing with solicitors – Don’t engage and don’t be afraid to be rude. Walk away, ignore them, tell them no, be bold, etc. If you come across as too friendly or interested at all they won’t leave you alone.

Macao Beach vs Bavaro Beach

Macao beach is very different from Bavaro beach. Bavaro has whiter sand, calmer waters, and is way more crowded due to the endless hotels located directly on the beach. There is also not a ton of sand.

Macao beach is more remote, has rougher waters, and has much more of a wild beach feel. Locals also visit this beach.

Bavaro beach is 30 mi long and Macao beach is 3 miles long.

There are palm trees at both beaches that provide some shade but the palm trees at Bavaro are like 100 ft tall. They were pretty cool to see. The palm trees at Macao were pretty basic.

You can surf and take surf lessons at Macao beach. Bavaro is so calm it doesn’t even really have waves but it makes for great wading in the water. There is no wading at Macao because of the waves.

Is Macao Beach safe?

Yes! It is very safe to visit. I would just use common sense and don’t stay too far away from any valuables.

Is Macao Beach public?

Yes, it is a public beach and free to access.

How far is Macao Beach from airport?

It is located 35 minutes from the Punta Cana International Airport.

How far is Macao beach from Bavaro beach?

Driving from Bavaro beach to Macao beach is 30.1 km (18 miles).

Depending on where you are staying on Bavaro beach it will take you about 30-35 minutes to get from Bavaro to Macao Beach. Check out the map below to see the directions.

The drive is easy, practically no traffic once you leave the Bavaro resort area. Basically a straight shot. You do not need 4 wheel drive. The roads are paved. If you are still nervous about driving out to this beach you can check out this YouTube video I made of the drive here.

What to Pack for the Dominican Republic

Reef safe sunscreen – The sun is strong in the Dominican. You definitely need a good sunscreen. I am obsessed with this one by Shiseido. No one does sunscreen like the Japanese and Koreans. It goes on so smooth and I love that it is a stick, so you don’t have to get your hands all gross and sandy when reapplying throughout the day. Buy here.

Swimsuit – Obvs. This one is my favorite from SKIMS. It is more of a sporty look which I love. The only annoying thing is they sell out really fast so stock if definitely limited. Get it while you can. Trust me, it’s amazing. Buy here.

Sandals – These Havanas are the best flip flops I have ever used! I have 3 pairs and have used them for years and they are still going strong! Buy here.

Macao Beach, where the Caribbean meets the Atlantic

  • Last updated on: 2022-08-06

Peaceful sandy beach

Macao Beach or Playa Macao as it’s known by the locals is located in the province La Altagracia, in the east part of the Dominican Republic, and it has been one of the more popular beaches in Punta Cana among visitors and locals alike.

Playa el Macao

What makes Macao beach so special? What makes it a place that you simply can’t miss if you are traveling to Punta Cana? In this post, we will tell you everything you need to know about this beach.

What makes Macao Beach special

Punta Cana has some of the most pristine beaches in all of the Dominican Republic. Among these is one of our favorites: Macao Beach. If you are looking for a place to relax and feel like you are part of a tropical paradise then you need to look no further than here.

Macao Beach serves as a popular destination for many tourists because it has clear blue waters, white sands, and those who seek adventure since it’s very popular among buggy and 4 wheels riders as well as surfers because of its great waves and beautiful beach.

Make sure to spend some time on one of many beach lounge chairs and take in your surroundings from what feels like another world! There’s nothing more relaxing than being at an exotic location in paradise, and at Macao, you’ll have a chance to experience just that.

Where is Macao Beach located?

Macao Beach lies on a small peninsula in the Atlantic Ocean, and it is about 20 minutes away from Bavaro Beach . The beach is located in front of the new Dreams Macao Beach Punta Cana .

Many visitors are also attracted to it due to its proximity to hotel and resort chains.

How do you get to Macao Beach?

The best way to experience Macao is to book the Dune Buggy tour this activity includes a 30 minute stop in Playa Macao. If you rather spend the day there, we recommend you to drive there or even take an Uber Ride.

Why should visit Macao Beach

A visit to Punta Cana is not complete without a trip to its off-resort beautiful beaches. However, many visitors and tourists tend to overlook one of the local’s favorites: Macao Beach (Playa Macao).

It’s less crowded than nearby beaches like Punta Cana. While other beaches are filled with tourists and resorts vying for space, it’s easy to find a spot on Macao beach. If you’re not interested in being surrounded by large crowds, then give Macao a try.

It has crystal clear waters. When you visit Punta Cana in general, you might expect that all of its many beaches will have similar turquoise waters, but this beach remains pretty virgin compared to other beaches in the region.

What to do when you get there

The main attraction at Macao Beach is that it provides visitors with endless activities such as surfing, Off-Road ATV tours , and many restaurants. Visitors can also look forward to a day of relaxation and fun at one of these beach bars located right on its shores.

This place is one of a kind since there is no other beach like it in all of Punta Cana. It’s great for a day out if you are looking for something fun to do with your family.

As its name suggests, Macao beach is a colorful place. If you want to see some of those beautiful blues and greens associated with the Caribbean Sea and some sunshine yellow sand and clear waters, you have come to the right place. You can surf all day long here since it’s one of the few places in the Dominican Republic you can do so (at least near Punta Cana). There is plenty of food stalls so enjoy some local eats like fish fillet or grilled lobster with rice along with a cold beer from one of those beachfront bars.

You can take Surfing classes at Macao Surf Camp . If you’re hungry there are several options such as fresh fried fish and Tostones (a Dominican favorite) or enjoy a cold Presidente Beer (another local favorite).

  • Macao Beach is 35 minutes away from the Punta Cana International Airport.
  • Macao beach is about 3 miles (4km) long.
  • Take small denomination bills as some local restaurants may not accept major debit/credit cards.

Macao Beach – resorts, hidden gems, activities and restaurants at Punta Cana’s most beautiful beach

Are you planning your vacation in Punta Cana and would like to visit Macao Beach? Check out this extensive guide about Playa Macao, which is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Punta Cana. It does offer an authentic taste of the Dominican Republic as it features plenty of local restaurants, a friendly village and an amazing beach setting. It is also one of the best surfing spots in Punta Cana and only features one Macao Beach Resort, making it more accessible to the public. But wait, that’s not everything – Playa Macao also offers a few hidden gems which you won’t find in any other Punta Cana guide. Check out all those recommendations from our first-hand experiences and make the best out of your stay at Macao Beach.

Dreams Macao Beach

Punta cana macao guest house, macao e-bike tour, the village of macao.

Macao Beach is one of the best beaches in Punta Cana, which are explained here . It is also part of the Dominican Republics’ best beaches . If you are interested in the only resort at Macao Beach, you can check out the comprehensive Dreams Macao Beach review . For another popular beach in Punta Cana, you can read about Bavaro Beach here .

Where is Macao Beach?

Macao Beach, often also referred to as Playa Macao, is a public beach in the north-western area of Punta Cana, approx. 22 miles away from Punta Cana International Airport . It is boarding Arena Gorda Beach in the south and Uvero Alto in the north. The little village of Macao is located right next to Playa Macao. The Dreams Macao Beach Resort is (so far) the only all-inclusive resort located right in Macao.

What is Macao Beach?

Macao Beach is often considered as the most beautiful of Punta Canas’ beaches and it is also the publicly most accessible one, as it is home to only one all-inclusive resort, the Dreams Macao Beach – compared to Bavaro Beach , Arena Gorda or Uvero Alto, which are lined with at least a dozen of all-inclusive resorts each. Therefore, Macao Beach is particularly popular among locals (usually during the weekend) and among individual travelers, who are staying in a guesthouse, villa or Airbnb rather than in a Punta Cana all-inclusive resort .

The wonderful beach of Playa Macao in the northern part of Punta Cana

This public accessibility has also led to Playa Macao being the Punta Cana beach with the most local restaurants and most authentic vibe. Furthermore, the beach is a popular surfing spot, has a couple of hidden gems like the secret beach “Playa Escondida” (find further information below in this article) and is the best option in Punta Cana to eat freshly caught and grilled fish right from the fishermen. Macao Beach also marks a great stop on every road-trip itinerary , especially when exploring the east of the Dominican Republic by rental car . When you come back from some of the best attractions in this area, such as Montaña Redonda or Los Haitises National Park , Playa Macao marks a great stop to end the day with an ice-cold beer and a dip into the ocean.

Last but not least, Macao Beach is also one of the most beautiful beaches in Punta Cana . Its half-moon-shaped bay, the beautiful colors of the sand and the fishing boats, the rock formations in the back and the blueish to turquoise water are perfect for taking stunning photos and admiring the gorgeous scenery. If you are lucky, especially during the summer months, you can even view the sunset here, as the bay is slightly open to the west.

Beautiful Macao Beach in the northern part of Punta Cana

Macao Beach Resorts

Macao Beach is one of those Punta Cana beaches which has still been spared from the gigantic resort constructions which has been taken place on the other stretches around Bavaro Beach & Punta Cana. Therefore, accommodation options are very limited here, which is why it is one of the best day trips from Punta Cana . However, in 2020, the first Punta Cana resort has opened its doors right at Macao Beach (with a stunning location) and you can find a couple of other lodging options as well.

As mentioned, there is only one all-inclusive resort at Macao Beach which is called Dreams Macao Beach Resort & Spa . It was newly built and opened only a few weeks before the pandemic hit the world and reopened its doors in the second half of 2020. Since then, it welcomes visitors with a perfect beach location, a no-reservation dining policy, unlimited premium drinks and a Punta Cana water park for toddlers and kids.

Dreams Macao does not only offer two water parks in Punta Cana , but it is also one of the best family resorts in Punta Cana , particularly due to having a separate kids club (3-12 years) and teens club (13-17 years) and for offering great surfing opportunities for those visitors willing to learn it for the first time. For adults, several bars are waiting to serve premium drinks, a spa is readily available and some rooms offer amazing views and/or luxurious swim-out options. Therefore, Dreams Macao Beach Resort is certainly not a family-only hotel, it offers more like a perfect mix between family amenities and comfort + convenience for adults.

Playa Macao Hotels

As mentioned, Macao Beach is not a very commercialized area (opposed to the other Punta Cana areas), hence there are not a lot of accommodation. However, a few options are recommendable. Please note, in case you decide on one of these Playa Macao Hotels, it is highly recommended to rent a car in Punta Can a to stay flexible when staying here. Except for the beach itself, a few beachside restaurants for lunch and tiny grocery stores, there is not much around in Macao. Public transport to Macao is available, but also limited, hence a Punta Cana car rental comes in very handy when staying at one of the following Macao Beach Hotels.

Selectum Hacienda Punta Cana

This is the most exclusive property you can find besides Dreams Macao Beach . It is a boutique guesthouse with just a few rooms, featuring a pool, marvelous views and a full-service concept.

Hostal Johnnier Macao Punta Cana

The only Playa Macao Hotel for many years (all the other Macao Beach Hotels mentioned are pretty new in business), offering a great guesthouse experience, just 10 minutes away from the beach.

This is one of the new Macao Beach hotel options with very modern rooms, spacious common areas and caring hosts, guaranteeing a perfect experience in Punta Cana and at Playa Macao.

Selecta Haciendum Punta Cana in Macao, a boutique hotel in Punta Cana

Macao Beach Hostel: Before Covid-19 hit Punta Cana, Macao Beach Hostel was one of the most popular places to be for backpackers and budget travelers in Punta Cana . Unfortunately, Macao Beach Hostel is closed indefinitely and there are currently no other backpacking options in Macao. The best hostel-like accommodation in Punta Cana, therefore, is GAVA Hostel * in the heart of Bavaro, even though it doesn’t feature the typical backpacking vibe other Dominican Republic hostels such as Island Life Hostel * in Santo Domingo or Manty’s Guesthouse * in Las Terrenas offer.

Macao Beach Airbnbs & Villas

Given the limited amount of accommodation, there are also not that many Macao Beach Airbnbs or villas. Particularly compared to the nearly endless array of villas or vacation homes in Punta Cana, Macao Beach might appear nearly deserted.

However, you can check here if you find a proper vacation rental *, there are a few selected apartments available at Playa Macao.

Macao Beach Activities

When heading to Playa Macao, you might wonder what are the things to do in Macao. With the following list of attractions and activities, you will be fully prepared on how to visit this amazing beach in Punta Cana . Please note that some of the Macao Beach excursions have to be prebooked, while other activities can be done spontaneously.

Surfing at Macao Beach in Punta Cana

SURFING at Macao Beach

This is probably the Macao Beach activity No. 1. Particularly considering that Macao Beach is actually the only place in Punta Cana where you can surf, it is definitely fun to try this hip and modern spot. There is a popular and extremely well-rated surfing school in Macao Beach, hence it is worth a try to see if surfing is for you.

Buggy Excursion in Punta Cana with Xtreme Buggy Adventures

Dune buggy tour

When looking for an excursion to Macao Beach, you will nearly always find the various dune buggy excursions first. Most of them head along the same roads and finish off their tour at Playa Macao. While I wouldn’t recommend the cheapest tours, this one here * is a pretty recommendable dune buggy adventure to Macao Beach.

Buggy Tour to one of the pristine beaches in Punta Cana

Macao Beach ATVs

In case you like the idea of a dune buggy tour in Punta Cana but would like to go in a more comfortable but still adventurous vehicle, you can also choose an ATV excursion to Macao Beach *. They are pretty similar to the dune buggy adventures just described, but you can drive in an ATV or a Polaris vehicle instead of the old rickety dune buggies.

The Cave of Wonders, Cueva de las Maravillas, nearby La Romana

Macao Beach Cave

Talking about the dune buggy and ATV excursions in Punta Cana , one thing you always visit when going on these tours is the Macao Beach cave. Unfortunately, this cave is not accessible without a tour but it marks an important point of interest in the area of Macao.

Idyllic and beautiful Playa Macao, one of the best beaches in Punta Cana

Enjoying Macao Beach

In case you are looking for a thing to do at Macao Beach which doesn’t require booking an excursion, you can also simply enjoy the beach. You can rent a beach chair and umbrellas from the beach vendors and design the day at your own pace. If you consume in one of the restaurants, a table is usually included, even though most of the restaurants don’t have beach chairs.

Hike from Macao Beach to Uvero Alto

Macao Beach Walk

A beach walk is always a great idea, as it is one of the free things to do in Macao and Punta Cana . With roughly 1 mile to walk, Playa Macao is not the longest beach in Punta Cana , but considering the spectacular scenery and the pristine section once you pass the last restaurant, it is a thing not to miss when visiting Macao.

A delicious fried fish

Eating fried fish

This is one of the most authentic things to do at Macao Beach: eating fried fish (or grilled fish), freshly caught from the local fisherman and prepared the way how everyone loves it in the Dominican Republic: with fried plantains, green salad and/or rice and beans. A plate usually shall cost around 10 USD.

If you are looking for a unique excursion at Macao Beach in a very small group, you can also consider an e-bike tour *. During this tour, you are passing the backcountry of Macao Beach and also the local village, getting to know more about this area of the Dominican Republic.

Macao Beach restaurants and beach clubs

One of the biggest draws of Macao Beach are its multiple local restaurants and local food shacks – more than at any other beach in Punta Cana . Even there are no typical beach clubs at Macao Beach, you find a lot of places where you can eat, drink and relax.

If you’d like the most local experience, you shall head to the eastern part of Macao Beach. Entering Macao, you’re turning right before Dreams Macao Beach and turning left right after you have passed the entire hotel. There is a parking lot afterwards and a scenic bridge over the mangroves, even though they are mostly dead, unfortunately.

At this part of Playa Macao, you find endless local Macao Beach restaurants, most of them offering fish and chicken in all forms, usually served with the typical sides of the Dominican Republic, such as rice, beans, salad or plantains. Most of the restaurants offer similar menus and similar prices. Choose the one where you most like the location. This is also the place where you can find most of the locals, especially during the weekend. If you want to avoid crowds, try to go during the week and avoid particularly Sunday.

You can also find plenty of beach vendors here, who sell snacks such as empanadas, conch or typical sweet delicacies from the Dominican Republic at Macao Beach.

However, we don’t want to finish this article without mentioning our three top hidden gems of Macao Beach – three things to do you shouldn’t miss if you really want to get to know this part of the Dominican Republic.

Playa Escondida

This is a true hidden gem right at Macao Beach most people don’t know about. Playa Escondida Beach in Punta Cana is only 10 minutes walking away from the eastern end of Macao Beach. The trail is not too complicated to find, just keep left in case of any doubt.

Playa Escondida is a very small but usually pristine beach (except on Sundays), where it is much easier to swim than at Macao Beach. It is also much quieter here. There are no food service and no beach vendors, but you have a great view of Macao Beach.

However, I like it more to stay at the main Playa Macao and to visit Playa Escondida just as a little side trip.

Playa Escondida, a hidden beach in Punta Cana

Walking towards Uvero Alto

If you prefer a longer walk than just a 10 minutes trail, you can also walk in the other direction towards Uvero Alto. There is a very nice trail parallel to Playa Macao, which offers nice views of the coast. You’ll reach a small river that is flowing into the ocean and continue the trail on the side until you reach Uvero Alto, an area with a lot of all-inclusive resorts.

Hike from Macao Beach to Uvero Alto

For another deeper insight into the Dominican Republic’s culture at Macao Beach, you can explore the little village of Macao, which is located right behind Playa Macao. Despite the closeby Dreams Macao Resort , It still has kept its authentic charm and local vibe, offering not much more than the typical Dominicans basics of a village: Colmados (mon-and-pop-stores), bars, local restaurants (Comedores), barbershops and a few more small businesses.

How to get to Macao Beach

To get to Macao Beach from Punta Cana or Punta Cana’s International Airport , you have four options: – book a private transfer to Macao Beach ( check the best option here *) – take an Uber or a taxi ( but read this article first to pick the right option) – take public transport from Punta Cana to Macao (it is complicated but doable – check out instructions in the Punta Cana public transport guide ) – rent a car in Punta Cana (best option, as you stay flexible during your holiday)

SHARING IS CARING! IF YOU ENJOYED THIS ARTICLE, PLEASE SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS – I WOULD APPRECIATE IT A LOT.

Here’s What You Get

Are you afraid of getting dirty? If so, there is NO need to continue reading this description.

Are you NOT afraid of getting dirty? If so, then DO keep reading this description!

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! It’s time to rip up the Dominican off-road and get a bit muddy!

Don’t waste your time with the “other” Buggy excursions. Macao Buggies are THE Buggy experts with the BEST off-road Route in Punta Cana.

From our secluded ranch in Macao, it’s time to size up your Buggy before we tear through remote farmland. These narrow, secluded country roads offer a safe haven for deep pools of Mud. At first, you may try and avoid the filth, but soon you’ll give into the muck. Everyone does, eventually.

Macao Buggies is not for the dainty!

Stop 1: Visit a sleepy country plantation for an intro on some of the Dominican Republic’s most sought after produce: cacao, coffee, tobacco and Mamajuana (a Dominican aphrodisiac elixir) Yes, you can drink and drive here!

Back into the rocky off-road and then…

Stop 2: Descend into a picturesque cave replete with a subterranean river perfect for swimming. Jump in, cool off and wash off!

Then, the longest stretch of your drive is also the largest contrast. From the hidden countryside cave, we retrace our muddy path, and then some, to the beach! Where else would we go?

Stop 3: Take in Macao Beach. One of the last “resort free” coastal stretches of Punta Cana, Macao is the idealistic Caribbean shore with amber sands, rows of coconut palms and azure waters.

CLIFF NOTES: Tear through remote farmland, Enter a quaint country ranch, Swim in the underground waters of a natural cave and Bask in the sun at Macao Beach.

What are you waiting for? Buggies are insanely popular in Punta Cana so please book as soon as possible to make sure you get one.

We’ll even wash it for you! Although if you read this far, we’re sure you don’t mind getting a bit dirty!

What’s Included

  • Round trip transport
  • Professional guides
  • Automatic Buggy

What to Bring

  • Old clothing (You may get muddy)
  • Bathing suit

We did the buggie excursion with Boogie Adventure. It was a lot of fun. However, I strongly recommend not purchasing anything from their gift shop. Everything was really expensive, the items had no price tag, and we had to hagle a lot to bring the price down. They also have photographers on the trip, they take really nice pictures, but it’s way too expensive.

I would recommend you befriend someone from the group or plan the trip for more than 2 people so can take nice pictures of each other

We booked the buggy tour with them later in the week. It was a good tour however all the places you stop people hound you to be buy thing. Maybe once stop having the option to buy chocolate..green tea..mamajuana…vanilla etc…that part was nice and the kids asking for stuff was ok. Other than that the tour was fun and nice to see other “real” parts of the DR. Def would recommend this company!

We had a fantastic time on this tour. It’s beautiful! The Buggy Tour was fun. We did, however, have issues with a couple of the buggies. We had selected this company after reading reviews that buggies on other tours were known for breaking down. But overall, we had a lovely time.

We had a blast on the Macao Buggy excursion! It rained, which made for dirty fun. The excursion was cultural, beach and adventure all in one. We were able to learn about Dominican grown coffee (samples included), green tea, coconut oil and cacao powder. I was able to bring all of my purchases back into the U.S. with no problems. We spent time at Macao Beach where you could also get local Dominican food. The fish was tremendous. We spent time at La Cueva Cave. The water is 25 ft deep for advanced swimmers. Our guide, Carlos, spoke English very well which made following along easy. Most if not all guides speak several different languages including Spanish, French, and English among other languages.

Fabulous tour and lots of fun! The buggies were in excellent condition, quick and clean. We saw many things and had a tons of fun. Our best adventure tour in Punta Cana!

Jennie (verified purchase) – October 19, 2022

This was a great adventure. Even the photographer took awesome pictures of us. I would do this again. The only thing I didn’t like was the cave visit. The steps were very steep and it was over 100 people trying to get up and down there. It became slightly overwhelming for me. I felt claustrophobic.

Emilio (verified purchase) – September 27, 2022

The Macao Buggies where awesome. Be prepared to get dusty and dirty and if it rains covered in mud. What more could you ask for.

Great fun! Just wish we could ride more and visit the vendors less. Alot of the vehicles broke down during the trip but the team was great with fixing them and sending us on our way.

David (verified purchase) – June 7, 2023

We did the buggy tour and it was great. Everything was on time and trip was a blast. It is a very busy area with lots of tours so if you are looking for tranquility this is not it. However if you want lots of mud, fun and a few cool spots it is a great time. Be sure you do not wear white and have clothes that can get very dirty. Would recommend the ATV vs buggy if looking to keep cleaner.

We booked an adventure buggy tour for 22 people through Punta Cana Tours. Thomas was great to deal with, spoke english and was very efficient in answering any email questions I sent (and there were many!). I would rate his service as excellent and would not hesitate in recommending him to anyone looking to book a tour in the Dominican Republic.

We started out by being picked up at our hotel in an open safari truck and the driver was right on time and the weather was perfect! We experienced the “wild and crazy” driving of the Dominican population, they had us gasping at the narrow misses. When we arrived at the Macao Buggies site, we were given instructions on what to do and what not to do and asked if we wanted to upgrade to the bigger buggies and we were able to say no without being pressured. We recommend the smaller size. More mud, more fun! The tour guides took us through mud holes, pot holes and bumps. It is about the mud after all. They took us to the coffee/cocoa and cigar farm and were given a demonstration and samples of the local product…Mamajuana – Best rum anywhere! The vendors are there, but again we were able to say no without being pressured, we did purchase the rum and coffee beans, but remember this is their livelihood and depend on tourists, so they can be a little pushy. We ended the trip at the Macao beach where we got to dip in the ocean and clean some of the mud off. The trip was a ton of fun, we tried to splash as much mud as we could and as many other buggies as we could! We would recommend this to anyone, young or old. Just make it fun!

Stacy (verified purchase) – March 15, 2022

Pick up from hotel was smooth. Guides were friendly and knowledgeable. The cave pool was cool and refreshing and the beach was beautiful. The buggy ride was more dusty than muddy (bandanas are a good idea), but other than that… The excursion was wonderfully fun!

Our Macao Offroad excursion was great! We had a blast and enjoyed every part of it. Rigo was an excellent tour guide and everyone was kind. The camera man did a terrific job, as well. I just wish they would have explained upfront to us and the crowd that we traveled with that the expectation was to purchase a package. It wasn’t made clear and was a shame because the photographer gentleman did a great job, but no one purchased any pictures. I do recommend telling customers that he will be taking pictures for purchase at the end of the tour, before the tour begins. Customers should also be informed about the picture price and packages ahead of time, so they don’t go to the various pit stops along the excursion purchasing other things and not have enough money to purchase pictures upon return to the Macao Offroad base.

Madison (verified purchase) – February 9, 2022

The excursion was very fun overall! Booked through Punta Cana Tours and the process was simple and easy, $59/person for a shared buggy! We were picked up at our location in the Macao buggy off-road truck, and although windy, the ride was fun. when we got the Macao compound, we were immediately sold snacks and drinks and bandanas, which did not bother me. The staff spoke English well which was nice. We waited around for what seemed like forever not knowing what for until a heap of buggies showed up for us to drive. Many other people on the excursion had issues with what buggies they paid for (high end vs regular, shared vs single), but I di not experience this. My advice would be to let the staff know if you ordered anything other than a shared, because everyone got what they wanted after they communicated but one group was frustrated because the staff was asking them for $70/person more for the VIP buggies which is what they ordered, but someone helped sort it out and they got it. Again, did not happen to me. The buggies are a bit dinky, but for us, it added to the experience! Although it was a bit hard to drive (ended up fine) and we lost control a few times (nothing serious), the off-roading part was the MOST FUN! We got soooooo dirty and it was a great experience!! I wish we would’ve ordered the pictures. The traditional house was average, but my boyfriend bought cigars for a good price – if you bargain they will go down if you want something. Good experience and educational. The most disappointing part was the cave. Vendors everywhere which does not bother me, but it just looked unsafe to jump in; it was extremely dark and crowded with what seemed like locals, so barely any of us could even squeeze through to see. We decided to wait outside and got haggled by vendors. We ended up going to a shop and bought a few things, but the vendor would not let us go. Luckily, the staff came and found us and helped us out before I go too upset, which was great to see! Macao beach was so beautiful, dont get me wrong, but it felt like we were only there for 5 minutes. Needed more time there. Also, the tour was extremely muddy and dirty as expected, but if another passenger didn’t advise us to get a trash bag from the desk for our belongings, we would have been screwed! Keep in mind if you do this tour! Also, bring your own snacks, water, sunglasses, and bandanas to save some cash! You WILL need them. Very very fun overall! Also most seatbelts do not work! Not too dangerous though but would have been nice! Mine was broken and I asked the guide and he said “you know, you don’t really need one.” I never felt unsafe, but it would have been a nice precaution.

Great excursion. Only 4 hours which is great. Leave at 8:30 back to the resort by 12:30. Does not take up a whole day of vacation. The day we went it was dry so not so dirty. Wish we had mud to drive through. Also very controlled. Very slow driving, very fast stops. Wish we could have done more off-road. Cave is very cool to dive in. Highly recommended. Only about 15 minutes at the beach. Strong rip tide, could not swim. Overall very good. Needed more speed and more mud!

Ray (verified purchase) – December 18, 2021

This was a fun afternoon trip, enjoyed by all of our family. First we stopped at the plantation where they told us about the local goods. Next was the cave which was an experience and finally we went to Macaw beach, which was stunning. We would definitely recommend buying the bandanas as it was very dusty and muddy in places. All part of the fun though! The only disappointment of the outing was that we were told to get on the wrong return bus to the hotel. It took us an additional hour to get back. Would suggest the drivers call out the hotel names just so it could prevent something like this happening again. Would recommend this trip, but if you have any doubts about driving an ATV opt for the buggies.

We did a private tour with Macao Dune Buggies. The cave swim was the highlight and we had it to ourselves for about 20 minutes. We felt the private tour was well worth the extra money because the groups tours were large and very dusty. The photographer got some great pictures and our granddaughter loved getting muddy!

We had a blast!! My husband and I and our 5 adult children ages 18-29 did the Macao Buggies. We also paid extra for a private guide…it was an additional $30 per buggy but worth every penny!

We rented 5 buggies, 2 of them we doubled up on, the other 3 were solo riders. With the private guide…Joseph, we went to the swimming hole first and it was just the 7 of us. Joseph changed the order of the attractions so we were never in with the crowd. It was great!!

The kids liked seeing the countryside and Macao Beach was so pretty! No seaweed either. I highly recommend this tour but definitely pay the extra money for a private tour.

Love this excursion went to Punta Cana in 2016 and in 2018 and did the Buggies excursion both times. The excursion proctors are amazing at guiding us. The only thing that stopped me from giving it a 5 star review was for the fact that we only stayed 20 minutes at Macao beach which by far is the most beautiful beach in Punta. overall great experience.

What do you wear on a buggy tour?

Most buggy tours in Punta Cana run through unpaved country roads that are dusty when dry and muddy when wet! It's best to wear comfortable clothing you don't mind getting dirty. It's also a good idea to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and a bandana to protect your mouth.

How old do you have to be to drive a buggy?

In Punta Cana you must be 18 years old to drive a buggy. There is no age restriction on being a passenger.

Can you wear flip flops on a dune buggy?

Yes you can! Since you'll be getting dirty and wet on most Punta Cana buggy tours, flip flops aren't a bad idea. With that said, a bit sturdier sandal or water shoe would probably be a better choice due to some some walking involved.

Are buggies automatic or manual?

All buggies used in excursions in Punta Cana are automatic. They are easy to operate and fun to drive!

Are pregnant woman allowed on a buggy tour?

Pregnant women are not permitted on buggy excursions. The route is incredibly bumpy, making the tour very high risk for pregnant women.

Do you need a drivers license to drive a buggy?

No, a driver's license is not required but you need to be 18 years or older to drive a buggy in Punta Cana.

  • Things to do

I only need accommodations for part of my trip

Visit Macao Beach

Undeveloped Macao Beach is often cited as the most beautiful beach in Punta Cana, managing to stand out from the crowd, despite being surrounded by miles upon miles of seemingly perfect Caribbean seascapes. Go there and you’ll soon understand why. Sink your toes into the fine-grain sands, dip your feet into the clear, tepid water and snack on local food, such as just-caught lobster.

Upon arrival at the beach, take a moment to appreciate the pretty surrounds. Bring your camera for photographs as the contrast of the bright blue waters against the light sands offers a photogenic backdrop.

Look for a suitable spot on the beach. As it is public and not owned by resorts, the beach attracts a good mix of both locals and tourists and you are free to settle down wherever you like.

Bring along some cash to purchase souvenirs or services from beach vendors. Get a relaxing massage or choose handicrafts for friends and family back home. To see more of the beach, opt for a horseback excursion, during which you can admire the picturesque views from the saddle.

Macao Beach is known for being a popular surfing spot and you may be able to see surfers out on the waves. Sign up for a surfing lesson at the school at the north end of the beach and see if you can stay upright on the board.

After working up an appetite, stop by one of the local snack stands to pick up food and drinks. Purchase cold local beers and sodas, cooked snacks and meals. Order some fresh fish, which will often be fried or grilled to order right in front of you.

Macao Beach is around a 20-minute drive north of Bávaro Beach. Arrange to visit as part of a buggy tour or get here by taxi. Go on weekends to see it at its liveliest, when locals flock there during their leisure time. Arrange your visit for during the week when you'll have a quieter beach experience.

Reviews of macao beach, 2/5 - disappointing.

locals aggressively attempting to sell

5/5 - Excellent

Food is 3 stars hotel is 5 stars

The people walking the beach with the monkey iguana and parrots were pushy. Put the iguana on me and then forced me to pay him I didn’t want to touch it.

People that have buggies business should let people stay a little longer

The locals are very persistent. Even after I declined taking pictures with their iguana they put it on us anyway. Then told us how much money we owed after the fact. While the iguana was on my head another local put henna art on my arm without asking even after I declined.

The best beach in Punta Cana!!! One of the best in the world!!
