Kind words from our travelers
Our private tour of Martha’s Vineyard with Craig was incredible! Our family was able to experience Martha’s Vineyard more than we ever had in our past trips. We felt enveloped by the warmth, creativity, and uniqueness throughout the tour – from the spectacular views to the food, and the people.
We searched for the perfect tour to help us explore the island in one day and found it. Craig makes you feel so at home on Martha’s Vineyard. He is local and knows all of the history, stories, and best spots. He was so informative and friendly. My husband and I booked the van so we could have a personal tour. We chose this tour because Craig allowed us to stop at some extra special spots because he knew we loved photography. It was a perfect day and it was topped off with a stop at a local fish market for a great little picnic.

My two sisters and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Craig. He was personable, knowledgeable, and very accommodating. We only had a couple of days on the Vineyard and never would have experienced what we did had we not taken the tour. Lunch at the beach with a complimentary bottle of wine was fantastic! Thank you, Craig!
Mother’s Day Weekend trip to MV with family. We toured with Craig. He is the best! He arrived at our hotel on time. He’s very knowledgeable about the island. Craig accommodated our request to stop along the tour for shopping and snacks. Lunch was great at the fish market with a bottle of wine along the water. We could hear music playing from one of the boats…Just a fantastic tour with him.
Craig provided a fantastic tour of Martha’s Vineyard for me and my family. He provides a wealth of history and knowledge. As a resident of the island for many years, he was able to provide inside information that most tour guides or tourists would never know. I highly recommend Martha’s Vineyard Tours as an activity for your next vacation to MV.
Thank you Craig.

With its stunning positioning, unique views, and attentive staff, you will feel right at home and instantly immersed in all things quintessentially Martha’s Vineyard. The unprecedented renovation of Harbor View Hotel is now complete and with its beautifully redesigned spaces, an expanded suite of world-class services, and countless modern amenities, this iconic landmark of Martha’s Vineyard is ready to welcome every guest with a luxurious, elegant experience that is simply unrivaled.
What to do:
After settling in, there is no limit to activities to enjoy, things to see, and food to try! The famed Edgartown Lighthouse will not only give you a taste of a time gone by- but you can tell your friends that you visited an active lighthouse. Bring your clubs with you and hit the links at Farm Neck Golf Club , which has been hailed as the best public course in all New England.
Be sure to introduce yourself to the island’s most interesting residents – the alpacas at Island Alpaca Company, where if you feel so inclined, you can purchase one. Yes, you read that right! When ordering your favorite lobster dish for dinner, be sure to try out the famous Chocolate Onion Rings- your sweet tooth and adventures side will be happy that you did.

Visit Martha's Vineyard, New England
- Accommodation
Seemingly endless ocean and long beach grass swaying in the breeze. The sound of waves crashing against the sand as lobstermen bring in the daily catch. Brightly painted gingerbread cottages contrasting against mammoth, modern estates. Martha’s Vineyard is the quintessential New England beach community, where you can enjoy the beach, cycle around the island or grab a bite of fresh seafood.
Explore the narrow streets of Edgartown as you walk among the weathered, cedar-shingled buildings. Take a break from the gentle sloping beaches and head to the glacier-carved cliffs at Aquinnah.
Located just 11 km (seven miles) from the mainland of Cape Cod , Martha’s Vineyard is the third-largest island on the East Coast. A long-time retreat for affluent New Englanders, the population swells to more than eight times its year-round population during the peak summer months.
In addition to its famous guests, the island is something of a celebrity itself — it was the filming location for Steven Spielberg’s Jaws . Jumping from the wooden, two-lane ‘Jaws bridge’ into the water below is a rite of passage for many visitors.
You can take in the vivid contrasts of the blue water and green beach grass as you stroll along the sandy footpaths to the ocean. Martha’s Vineyard offers calmer waters at its northern beaches and a slightly rougher surf on its southern shores.
Head to Oak Bluffs Town Beach for calm, shallow water, Long Point Beach for great swimming or Katama Beach if you prefer a few waves. At Aquinnah Public Beach you can enjoy the water while taking in the views of the Aquinnah Cliffs — towering red clay bluffs that melt into the beach where they touch the sea, giving the sand a rainbow hue.
At the top of the precipice sits Gay Head Light, the site of the first lighthouse on the island. Though the current lighthouse is not the original structure, there’s been a light guiding sailors on that spot since 1799. Gay Head Light is one of five lighthouses you can see on Martha’s Vineyard.
The biggest of the island’s six towns is Edgartown. It has no traffic lights and no chain stores, but its streets are far from empty. You can sip artisan coffee at the town’s cafés or take advantage of the abundant local seafood by eating dinner at an oyster bar. Downtown also provides a good shopping scene, with plentiful boutiques to explore.
Best time to visit Martha's Vineyard
New England experiences four distinct seasons, with cold, snowy winters and hot, humid summers. To make the most out of Martha’s Vineyard, we recommend visiting in June, July and August. The temperatures are warmest during these months, making it the best time for swimming and lounging on the beach. You might also visit in September, when temperatures stay warm and the island quiets down after schools return to session.

This New England Island Is the Perfect Summer Vacation — With Over 20 Beaches, Great Restaurants, and Waterfront Hotels
Here, everything you need to know to plan the perfect Martha's Vineyard vacation.
As compact as Martha's Vineyard is — or simply the Vineyard, as locals affectionately abbreviate it — this New England island can feel much larger because of its three main towns: Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, and Edgartown, all of which offer something different. There's also Aquinnah, renowned for its towering seaside cliffs, the sleepier fishing village of Chilmark, and the less touristy, often labeled 'residents-only', West Tisbury.
A visit to the island isn't complete without visiting them all, however, repeat visitors will surely play favorites, flocking back to their preferred destination. Don't be intimidated, there's something for everyone on Massachusetts' largest island, and though it may not be the easiest to access, that only adds to its charm — because once you arrive, you'll never want to leave.
The Best Time to Visit Martha's Vineyard
A New England island situated seven miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean, the Vineyard is very much a seasonal destination. Summer is by far the best time to visit with balmy averages hovering in the 80s and a plethora of activities on offer; the winter can bring nasty, coastal storms and the majority of businesses will shutter during these months. If you're planning a trip to Martha's Vineyard in high season, you should book accommodations early (whether you're looking for a luxe hotel or an Airbnb), as space is limited on the 100-square-mile island.
Repeat visitors may find that the shoulder-season months — April and September — are the best time to experience all of the island's charm, without the chaos of high-season crowds. And if you're lucky and willing to plan last minute, warm autumns may prompt the Vineyard to extend the season, so don't completely write off October. With that said, if you have plans to visit a specific restaurant or shop during shoulder season, just make sure to check their website for off-season hours.
What to Do in Martha's Vineyard
Hit the beach.
With nearly 20 beaches, the most obvious thing to do on the Vineyard is check out the beaches. Gay Head Public Beach shows off the towering Aquinnah cliffs, Menemsha is known for gorgeous sunsets, and Lighthouse Beach is walking distance from Edgartown. Elevate your beach day with a lobster roll or whole steamed crustacean with a side of seaweed salad from The Net Result .
Experience History
Rent a bike and pedal past the historical Gingerbread cottages of Oak Bluffs. Climb the West Chop Lighthouse or Edgartown Lighthouse for impressive views of the Vineyard. Visit the Flying Horses Carousel , which dates back to 1876.
Spend Time in and on the Water
Whether you're wading, paddleboarding, or surfing, playing in the surf is a crucial part of island life. You should also head out on the water for an afternoon, taking a traditional sailing lesson (try private lessons with Sail MV ) or chartering a boat for the day (try Island Girl Excursions ).
Adults-only Fun
Pop into one of the harborside bars with airy decks and tiki cocktails, where you may just stay for the rest of the evening. Visit The Ritz MV for a taste of the island's late-night, local scene — open year-round.
Where to Stay on Martha's Vineyard
The kelley house.
Nestled in the former whaling port of Edgartown, The Kelley House Hotel still stands from the days when sea captain wealth developed the island. Don't let 275 years of history fool you, though — Kelley House's 54 rooms have been renovated to keep up with the times, emanating contemporary, nautical charm. The guests-only pool is a rarity on the island and a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the beaches during peak-season.
The Edgartown Collection
The Christopher, The Sydney, The Richard, and The Edgartown Inn are the four luxury boutiques in this hotel collection, totaling 69 rooms across Edgartown. Each property is tastefully renovated and reflects their own personality, from the island-inspired blue hues at The Christopher to the garden-reminiscent touches at The Edgartown Inn, you simply can't go wrong.
Harbor View Hotel
Timeless but contemporary, this 117-room resort is at the center of it all, and somewhat of a landmark in its own right, thanks to its ocean-to-plate restaurant, Bettini. The hotel's latest renovation lightened the interiors across a neutral palette of rosy hues and sandstone, accented by pops of seaside blues.
Summercamp's Oak Bluffs locale offers a change of pace with its retro-whimsical design elements and mission encouraging guests to "come be a kid again." Amenities like Camp Canteen, with fun, nostalgic snacks (Dreamsicles, anyone?), and a vintage game room with a ping pong table, make this property the ultimate adult summer camp.
How to Get to Martha's Vineyard
Accessible only by boat or plane, Martha's Vineyard isn't the easiest island to get to, but the journey is well worth it. Both The Steamship Authority and Hy-Line Cruises run year-round ferries, operating on limited schedules in the off-season (October through March) and increased service during high-season (May through September). The Steamship Authority leaves from Woods Hole, Massachusetts (on Cape Cod) and arrives at Oak Bluffs (seasonally) or Vineyard Haven (year-round) in 45 minutes. The ferry can accommodate cars, however, vehicle reservations are limited and pricey, so many vacationers choose to leave their cars in one of the long-term lots in Woods Hole. Hy-Line Cruises is a passenger-only ferry that also takes about 45 minutes, departing from Hyannis and arriving in Oak Bluffs. Reservations are strongly recommended for both ferry operators, particularly in the summer.
The Best Martha's Vineyard Restaurants
19 raw oyster bar.
Indulging in seafood is a rite of passage on the Vineyard, particularly seafood towers at 19 Raw Oyster Bar . Aim to arrive early and snag a seat on the patio tucked behind one of Edgartown's main drags; slurping local oysters in the sunshine and dipping Jonah crab into cocktail sauce really welcomes you to island life.
Only open for dinner, this swanky restaurant specializes in new American fare and inventive craft cocktails. Overlooking Lagoon Pond, the dark-timber bar makes for a lovely sunset perch before moving to your candlelit table. The menu is particularly inspired by the sea, sourcing from regional fishermen and showcasing New England's bounty.
Sitting beachside on Vineyard Haven Marina, the sense of place at Garde East is palpable. Whether you secure a seat on the terrace or a window table, you won't have any mistake as to your whereabouts, nor access to waterfront views. Open for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch, don't miss out on the house bread, with truffle butter and grilled oysters, regardless of when you visit. The rest of the menu is just as terrific as the grilled oysters; with incredibly fresh seafood, there are no wrong choices here.
The island's newest Italian restaurant now ranks as one of the island's best, with Naples-born chef Salvatore della Torre helming a menu flexing the flavors of his home country. From arancini and insalata to carbonara and ragu, Salvatores presents the best of Italy's southern and northern regions to Union Street in Vineyard Haven.
A husband-and-wife duo opened this European-inspired restaurant as a place to relax, even naming it after the French word for "relaxation" or "relaxing." You'll find odes to the couple's past travels throughout Spain, Italy, and France on the menu, along with the freshest ingredients from garden to ocean.
One of Edgartown's liveliest bars, Alchemy , is also a must-visit for dinner. Chef Christopher Stam celebrates, and has been celebrating for more than two decades, island cuisine with classic New England flavors. Appetizers comprise a sort of global tapas, while mains offer fine-dining dishes for every palate, with surf and turf as a longstanding tradition.
The Black Dog
Even first-time Vineyard visitors will recognize the swinging black lab logo as a symbol of the island, which is why you simply can't miss this classic tavern along Vineyard Haven Harbor. Founded in 1971, this eatery is always overflowing, especially as it's one of the few restaurants open year-round. Don't miss out on the legacy, and while you're there, you may even want to pick up a souvenir shirt, the true proof of a Vineyard visit.

Why Go To Martha's Vineyard
This triangle-shaped island – sitting about 8 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts – has been a secret summer hideaway of the rich and famous for more than a century. Today, the "Hollywood East" reputation is going strong thanks to frequent visitors like former President Barack Obama, David Letterman and Bill Murray, among many others. But despite the all-star summer lineup, a laid-back lifestyle rules the island. The main draw rushing Vineyard visitors off the ferry is the chance to let their hair down for a long weekend. Sure, you'll find insanely expensive summer cottages and pricey restaurants in some corners of the island like Chilmark. But low-key towns and villages like Vineyard Haven and Menemsha are still predominantly focused on their marine industries and offer a more casual experience. Even the island's must-have souvenir – a Black Dog sweatshirt – is informal. So swap the stilettos for your scrappiest flat sandals, and do play it cool when you spy some film stars in Edgartown; everyone deserves a slice of a Vineyard vacation.

Martha's Vineyard Travel Tips
What You Need to Know
The island is divided into six towns You'll probably spend most of your time "down-island" in Edgartown, Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven (also referred to as Tisbury).
BYOB Despite changes to beer and wine licensing in past years, the town of Chilmark remains dry. If you want to sip some wine with your meal, you'll have to bring your own (just be prepared to pay a hefty corkage fee). Even in the other towns that do serve alcohol, you may run into rules, such as a required food purchase with your drink.
Get your fast food fix on the mainland You won't find popular chains like McDonald's or Starbucks on the island.
How to Save Money in Martha's Vineyard
Leave the car on the mainland Not only will you have to fork over as much as $220 to take your car on the ferry, but you'll also have to navigate tourist-clogged streets. Plan to rely on your own two feet and the island's affordable bus system instead.
Set up camp If you don't mind roughing it, you'll find that the Martha’s Vineyard Family Campground is one of the most affordable lodging options.
Visit in September Hotel prices drop drastically once peak summer season passes. Plan a trip after Labor Day and you'll enjoy more affordable lodging rates and fewer crowds. Plus, the Atlantic's waters are still relatively warm this time of year.
What to Eat
Martha's Vineyard is famous for its lack of fast food restaurants, but with all of the delicious seafood and locally grown produce populating the island's eateries, you won't miss those takeout menus. In fact, you'll eat very well.
If the thought of a Starbucks-less vacation sends you into a spiral, don't worry: There are plenty of breakfast spots on the island that can fulfill your daily caffeine and pastry fix, including Espresso Love and Nat's Nook . For a bigger menu and a unique dining atmosphere, head to The Right Fork Diner . Situated on the Katama Airfield in Edgartown, the diner offers unobstructed views of the biplanes taking off and landing, making it a popular spot for families.
When you're ready to sample some of the island's marine bounty, critics and locals agree: Larsen's Fish Market should be your first stop. Sitting pretty in the fishing village of Menemsha, Larsen's offers some of the freshest lobster and oysters in town. And if you're craving lobster rolls, you won't have a hard time finding them. For the best deal, head to Grace Episcopal Church in Vineyard Haven. On Fridays during the summer months, the church offers a lobster roll, chips and a beverage for a bargain, with proceeds going to local nonprofits. Offshore Ale Co. , a restaurant and brewery in Oak Bluffs, is well-known for its East Chop Lighthouse Ale and casual atmosphere (go ahead, throw those peanut shells on the floor), but it's also home to one of the island's best lobster rolls. And, of course, no visit to the Vineyard would be complete without a stop at Black Dog Tavern . Considered by many to be an island institution, this waterfront eatery is just steps from the main ferry and features some of best casual seafood dishes in town. Don't leave without trying the quahog chowder. In the mood for something a little more formal? The vineyard has you covered there, too. The Port Hunter (try the raw bar) and State Road (try the scallops) are both worth the hype, according to recent visitors. And when you're ready to let loose and dance with some locals, head to The Ritz , a legendary dive bar in Oak Bluffs that features live music and karaoke.
Leave the car on the mainland and get around Martha's Vineyard via bike. It's a cheaper, more pleasant way to tour the island, according to recent visitors.

Ancestors of the Wampanoag people have lived for at least 12,000 years in Aquinnah and throughout the island of Noepe, meaning “land between the streams,” the original name for Martha’s Vineyard. The island was renamed in 1602 by a British sailor named Bartholomew Gosnold, who gave it its present-day name after his daughter Martha. Vineyard is a misnomer as the island does not produce wine. Instead, the name comes from the abundance of viney undergrowth that can be found along the coast.
Martha's Vineyard is famous for a lot of unique characteristics and activites. Many people visit to enjoy the beautiful beaches, lighthouses, and iconic aquinnah cliffs. Visitors come to walk through the gingerbread cottages, to jump off the famous Jaws Bridge and to ride America's oldest carousel, the Flying Horses. Martha’s Vineyard Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know About This Authentic East Coast Gem
Posted on Published: May 30, 2021 - Last updated: December 6, 2021
Martha’s Vineyard is the perfect, picturesque seaside town in the United States. It’s an incredible place to just escape for a few days or a few weeks and really feel refreshed. This quaint island is known for its picture-perfect homes, incredible seafood, and beaches, but it’s so much more than that! Keep reading to find out all you need to know to visit in this Martha’s Vineyard travel guide.
Table of Contents
How to Get to Martha’s Vineyard
Martha’s Vineyard is an island located in the state of Massachussetts, right off the coast of the famous Cape Cod. It’s right next to Nantucket, which is another one of Massachussetts’ famous islands, and the two frequently get paired together. Because Martha’s Vineyard is an island, there are only so many ways you can get there. If you’re coming from a distance, you’ll likely be flying into the Martha’s Vineyard Airport (airport code: MVY).
Like most visitors, you’ll likely opt to take the ferry from Woods Hole, which is just south of Falmouth, MA. You can find details about ferry schedules with the operating company, called The Steamship Authority . The ferry does accommodate vehicles, and if you’re coming with a car, you’ll want to reserve your tickets ahead of time – especially if you’re traveling over a popular time like summer! You can reserve your tickets with a vehicle here . Standard passenger vehicle tickets start at $59 each way and increase during popular times.
If you’re not traveling with a car, you can purchase tickets through The Steamship Authority’s app here . The adult tickets are $9.50 one way or $19 roundtrip. These don’t sell out nearly as easily as the vehicle tickets, so you can reserve these a bit more last minute if you need to.
The ferry leaves from Woods Hole and alternates arriving into either Vineyard Haven or Oak Bluffs. Check out where your accommodation is on Martha’s Vineyard and try to choose the closer option. Don’t fret if the location you want either is full or doesn’t match up with your schedule, because you can easily drive to the other port if you’re bringing a car with you. Do keep in mind that the Oak Bluffs port closes between October and May.
Best Time to Visit Martha’s Vineyard
Martha’s Vineyard is genuinely a beautiful place to visit any time of year. It really just depends on what you’re looking to get out of it. The island really comes alive in the summer – with the height of their tourism season being between Memorial Day Weekend in late May and Labor Day Weekend in early September.
One of the most perfect times to visit is in September after the crazy crowds have left, but while the weather is still incredible. You definitely won’t have the place to yourself like you might in winter, but tourists definitely thin out after Labor Day.
If you visit Martha’s Vineyard in the “off season,” which is basically late fall, through winter, and into early spring, expect things to be pretty quiet. Some businesses may even close due to the lack of heavy tourism, so keep that in mind for an off season visit.
How Long to Visit Martha’s Vineyard
Martha’s Vineyard is a place that a lot of people spend their summers, which I’m sure we would all love to do. That being said, if you’re visiting as a tourist, you likely won’t be able to stay that long. Anywhere between 3-7 days is a great sweet spot for how long to visit Martha’s Vineyard.
If you can manage to stay for a week, you absolutely should. There’s plenty to do on the island for a whole week, while still allowing you some down time to hang out at the beach if you’d like to. If you only have a long weekend to spare, you can still see lots! Make sure to rent a car and stay somewhere central to be able to properly optimize the shorter stay in Martha’s Vineyard.
Getting Around Martha’s Vineyard
Some people might say otherwise, but you really should have a car with you when visiting Martha’s Vineyard. The only exception I would maybe have to this if you’re staying in an epic mansion right on the beach that you don’t really plan on leaving. But let’s face it, that’s probably not what most of us are going to be doing in Martha’s Vineyard!
While the island is relatively small, it would still take you about 35 minutes to drive from one side of the island to the other. Plus, part of the charm of Martha’s Vineyard is the small towns like Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, and it’d really be a shame to miss out on one of those because you didn’t have a car with you.
You can bring a car with you on the ferry, which can cut down on costs like a car rental. However, if you’re flying in, you’ll likely need to rent a car. I always recommend RentalCars.com for car rentals if you’re looking for the best price, or Hertz if you’re looking for the best service.
If you’re really against renting a car, Martha’s Vineyard does have a small public transportation system. You can check out the bus routes and schedules here !
Where to Stay in Martha’s Vineyard
The first question to ask yourself to figure out where to stay in Martha’s Vineyard is what town should you stay in? The three main town areas in Martha’s Vineyard that I would recommend staying in are Vineyard Haven, Edgartown, and Oak Bluffs. All 3 are adorable, quaint towns that will give you the perfect taste of small town charm, without having to compromise on “stuff” like things to do, restaurants, shops, and so on.
You really can’t go wrong when deciding between the 3 towns. I personally stayed in Vineyard Haven, which was super convenient because it was a short drive from the ferry. The incredible boutique hotel I stayed at was called Nobnocket Boutique Inn and I would highly recommend it. Not only were the owners incredibly kind and hospitable, but the hotel itself was absolutely perfect. We had a home-cooked meal every morning for breakfast, super comfortable rooms, and small little touches like lavender pillow spray left by the bed every night. I loved the lavender pillow spray so much that I actually went out and bought the same type when I got home!
If you’re looking for some other options of where to stay in Martha’s Vineyard across all 3 of the towns, below is a great list!
- The Kelley House
- Harbor View Hotel
- The Richard
- Summercamp Hotel
- The Christopher
- Mansion House Inn
- Isabelle’s Beach House
Top Things to Do in Martha’s Vineyard
Martha’s Vineyard is an island and a beach area, so most of the things to do in Martha’s Vineyard are outdoors. That being said, if you’re more of an inside person, there are some excellent things to do inside as well! You’ll want to rent a car during your stay so you can get around to all the things to do.
You could probably spend an entire summer on the island and never run out of things to do. That being said, there are some top things that you should be sure not to miss during your stay. Keep reading to see a list of all the best things to do in this Martha’s Vineyard travel guide!
- Take a tour of the whole island. There’s so much to see on Martha’s Vineyard, that you could definitely benefit from doing a tour with a guide of the whole island. This will help you get a lay of the land and decide where you want to spend the rest of your stay. I recommend this 6-town tour here !
- Marvel over Aquinnah Cliffs overlook. Aquinnah is the town on the westernmost coast of Martha’s Vineyard and is the home of the Wampanoag people. You can visit this area to shop where your money will go back to the community. Additionally, the town’s coast has dramatic cliffs, known as the Aquinnah Cliffs. Here you can visit the overlook and marvel at the stunning coastline in Martha’s Vineyard, which also features the Gay Head Lighthouse.
- Go lighthouse hopping. Martha’s Vineyard is known for having 5 different lighthouses across the island. These lighthouses are the Edgartown Lighthouse, the Gay Head Lighthouse, the East Chop Lighthouse, the West Chop Lighthouse, and the Cape Poge Lighthouse. With the exception of Cape Poge, all are easily accessible by road. However, West Chop is not open to the public.
- Visit the Gingerbread Houses in Oak Bluffs. Oak Bluffs is known for its picturesque gingerbread-looking houses. If you type “Gingerbread Houses” into Google Maps, you’ll easily be able to find the location of these houses. Take an hour or two to walk around and marvel! There’s a little park area in the central area of all these houses, so you could easily have a picnic and enjoy your surroundings.
- Watch the sunset on the water. Make sure to take a sunset boat ride during your stay in Martha’s Vineyard. Not only is the sunset even more beautiful to experience from the water, but seeing the island from a boat gives you a whole new perspective of the island and its beauty. I recommend using Island Time Charters !
- Check out the Jaws Filming Locations. If you’re a big Jaws fan, you might know that this famous 70s movie was filmed in Martha’s Vineyard. There are a bunch of different filming locations you can check out, but the most popular one is Jaws Bridge. If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll recognize the scene immediately. Once you get back to your hotel at night, rewatch the movie and see if you recognize any additional spots!
- Visit the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. I’m not typically a big museum person, but the Martha’s Vineyard Museum really blew me away. Not only does it go through all the fascinating history of the island, but it has incredible exhibitions as well. Tickets are $18 for adults, with a discount for kids and seniors. Find out more information about visiting here .
- Relax at the Martha’s Vineyard beaches. Martha’s Vineyard is a summer beach destination, so it’s no surprise that there are tons of great beaches to check out. The beaches you shouldn’t miss are: Lucy Vincent Beach, Joseph Sylvia State Beach, Moshup Beach, Inkwell Beach, Katama Beach, and Menemsha Public Beach. If you’re really a beach fan, there are way more than this to visit as well!
- Visit Chappaquiddick Island. Chappaquiddick Island, known by locals as Chappy, is a little island separate from the rest of Martha’s Vineyard, located right by Edgartown. You have to take the ferry to get over to Chappy, and I recommend taking your car to make it easier to get around. On Chappy, you can visit things like Mytoi Japanese Garden, the Cape Poge Lighthouse, and Wasque Point.
- Shop ’till you drop! Martha’s Vineyard has tons of great areas for shopping. Whether you’re stopping to check out Vineyard Vines (they started in MV!), or just wanting to look around, you’ll never run out of adorable shops to browse through. Check out Main Street in Edgartown to start out and go from there!
Where to Eat in Martha’s Vineyard
Just like anywhere else, one of the most important things you need to know before traveling to Martha’s Vineyard is all the best places to eat. Don’t worry, there’s no shortage of incredible eats on the island.
Being that Martha’s Vineyard is an island, you’ll find some absolutely delicious seafood on the island. If you’re not a seafood lover, you’ll still be able to find a ton of incredible restaurants to choose from. Keep reading this Martha’s Vineyard travel guide to see all the best places to eat!
- The Red Cat Kitchen
- Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company
- The Black Dog Tavern
- Larsen’s Fish Market
- The Barn Bowl & Bistro

The cost of a honeymoon trip to Martha's Vineyard can vary depending on factors such as accommodation, dining choices, transportation, and activities. The Black Travel Club for Women
Bathed in unique beauty, Martha's Vineyard attracts day-trippers, celebrity home owners, and urbanites seeking a restful getaway; its year-round residents include many artists, musicians and back-to-nature types.
For more than a century, prominent and wealthy Blacks from New York and Boston have transformed this once segregated town in Martha’s Vineyard into what is known today as the “Black Hamptons” ...a little bougie, a lot quaint.
Built by Black servants, Oak Bluffs is now a place to see and be seen, as the black elite, professionals and middle class come to enjoy the slower paced island life in a town that’s delightfully stuck in time. But ...they do know how to turn up!
The Island remains untouched by the kind of rampant commercialism found on the mainland – there's not a single chain restaurant or cookie-cutter motel in sight. Instead you'll find quaint inns, chef-driven restaurants and a bounty of green farms and grand beaches.
And there's something for every mood here – fine dining in gentrified Edgartown one day and savoring comfort food at Sarah Brown's and standing in line at Back Door Donuts in Oak Bluffs the next.
Be prepared to be astonished as it is not uncommon to run into President Obama on “the island.” In 2018, some of our own members ran into "Prez" coming off Farm Neck Golf Course where he is known to frequent!
Grab your girls and go!
OUR ACCOMMODATIONS
The Pequot Hotel in Oak Bluffs
From the decorative lattice that adorns its porches to the cozy feel of classic cottage décor, The Pequot Hotel exudes the warmth and charm that is Martha’s Vineyard tradition.
The Pequot Hotel is wonderfully situated one block from the iconic Inkwell Beach and a quick stroll through the colorful neighborhood to the bustle of town on Circuit Avenue, the "Main Street" of Oak Bluffs.
Daily breakfast is included ...start your Sunday morning with a complimentary mimosa. Grab a fresh baked chocolate chip cookie in the afternoons and wash it down with a glass of fresh lemonade.
Join in on the Friday porch party, snag a beach chair, a towel and umbrella and head to the beach or order a bike to cycle through the island's welcoming streets.
But what you will probably enjoy the most is simply relaxing in one of the white rocking chairs on the charming flower trimmed veranda and letting all your worries and stress just float away.

‘Tales of Now and Zen’ from Vineyard Haven library
On Sunday, April 28, at 2 pm, the Vineyard Haven library will present “Tales of Now and Zen” with awardwinning storyteller Motoko. In this virtual program for adults, Japanese storyteller Motoko offers an afternoon filled with humor, charm, and elegance. She regales us with
hilarious tales from her old country, as well as poignant, personal stories from her childhood in Osaka, and her experiences as an immigrant to the U.S.
Motoko is the recipient of the National Storytelling Network’s 2017 Circle of Excellence Award. A native of Osaka, Japan, Motoko has performed storytelling and mime professionally since 1993. Her appearances include PBS’ “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” and a tour with the CarnegieKids in Miyazaki project, sponsored by Carnegie Hall. The awardwinning storyteller trained with master mime Tony Montanaro.
“Tales of Now and Zen” is a travel itinerary to places as strange and exotic as ancient China and the interior of our own heart. Motoko brings us to long ago and far away, then leads us back to ourselves in this moment, as each of her characters reveal their intentions and desires. We learn why a grandmother is strong, why a child is wise, why a warrior is frightened. It is an excursion like no other.

This program is funded in part by a grant from the Martha’s Vineyard Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency, and by the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library.

Migrants shipped to martha’s vineyard by gov. ron desantis given crime victim visas.

A handful of the migrants shipped off to Martha’s Vineyard by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis 18 months ago are now legally allowed to work in the US — because they’re considered victims of a crime, their attorney says.
The migrants applied last year for a special type of visa designated for crime victims — known as a U-visa — after they claimed they were duped into boarding charter flights from San Antonio, Texas, to the upmarket liberal enclave in Massachusetts with the false promises of jobs and housing.
At least three of the 49 migrants involved in the flight operation — spearheaded by DeSantis in September 2022 — received “bona fide determinations” for their U-visa applications this week, their immigrant attorney, Rachel Self, told the Boston Globe .
It means they can now find jobs and can’t be deported while they wait for their visa to come through, Self added.
The approval of a U-visa can often lead to permanent lawful status in the country as well.
The developments come after a sheriff in Bexar County, Texas, launched a criminal probe in late 2022 after DeSantis took credit for the two taxpayer-funded migrants flights that landed in Martha’s Vineyard after a brief pit stop in the Sunshine State.
At the time, Sheriff Javier Salazar, an elected Democrat, railed against the flights that originally took off in his city — claiming the migrants were victims of a crime because they were allegedly “exploited and hoodwinked into making this trip” as part of a political stunt.
DeSantis, meanwhile, insisted the migrants boarded the flights “voluntarily.”
“Immigrants have been more than willing to leave Bexar County after being abandoned, homeless, and ‘left to fend for themselves,’” a DeSantis rep said at the time.
“Florida gave them an opportunity to seek greener pastures in a sanctuary jurisdiction that offered greater resources for them, as we expected.”
Still, the migrants were able to apply for the U-visas after the Bexar County sheriff confirmed they were assisting with his law enforcement probe.

The U-visa is specifically set aside for “victims of certain crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse and are helpful to law enforcement or government officials in the investigation or prosecution of criminal activity,” according to US Citizenship and Immigration Services .
Congress only permits the feds to issue 10,000 U-visas per year.
“These determinations are one step closer to justice,” said Self, the immigrant attorney. “[They] further underscore that anyone who knows all the facts … simply cannot ignore the criminality of the actors.”
Meanwhile, there have been no updates in the Bexar County investigation since last year — despite the sheriff recommending the local district attorney file felony and misdemeanor charges of unlawful restraint against those who operated the flights.
The Bexar County DA hasn’t announced any such charges.
“The Bexar County DA’s inaction in this matter is concerning and cannot be understated,” Self said. “Crickets from the DA’s office. Why?”
Separately, a federal judge in Boston ruled earlier this month that the Martha’s Vineyard migrants can sue the charter flight company — Florida-based Vertol Systems Co. — that transported them to the island.
The court said that “unlike ICE agents legitimately enforcing the country’s immigration laws … the court sees no legitimate purpose for rounding up highly vulnerable individuals on false pretenses and publicly injecting them into a divisive national debate.”
The ruling also found that the facts of the case, “taken together, support an inference that Vertol and the other Defendants specifically targeted Plaintiffs because they were Latinx immigrants.”
