Metallica's M72 tour will rock the world for 2 years to support new '72 Seasons' album

metallica band tour 2022

Metallica plans to storm the world for two years with its massive M72 tour.

The veteran hard rockers will play a spate of dates across 2023-24 in Europe, the U.S., South America and Mexico, hitting each city for two nights with two different set lists for what the band has dubbed a "No Repeat Weekend."

Metallica – comprised of  James Hetfield , Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo – will launch their massive run April 27 in Amsterdam, with the band’s first U.S. shows landing Aug. 4 and Aug. 6 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Other cities the in-the-round production will visit on its 2023 cycle include Glendale, Arizona, St. Louis and Detroit. The 2024 U.S. shows will kick off Aug. 2 and Aug. 4, 2024, in Foxborough, Massachusetts, with other two-night stands planned for Chicago, Minneapolis and Seattle.

Metallica has also corralled some heavy-hitting opening acts: Pantera, Mammoth WVH , Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills will rotate among the U.S. dates.

Two-day tickets – including discounted seats for fans under 16 – will go on sale Dec. 2 via ticketmaster.com. Single tickets will be available starting Jan. 20. A Citi card pre-sale runs from 2 p.m. local time Wednesday through 10 p.m. local time Dec. 1.

A portion of proceeds from every ticket will benefit the band’s All Within My Hands foundation, which provides funds to combat food insecurity and aid disaster relief efforts worldwide.

To complement the tour, Metallica will unveil its 12th studio album, "72 Seasons," on April 14, prefaced by blistering new single, "Lux Æterna," available now for streaming/downloading. Other tracks include "Crown of Barbed Wire," "You Must Burn!" and "If Darkness Had a Son."

The 12-song collection is the band’s first full-length release of new material since 2016’s "Hardwired…To Self-Destruct."

Metallica has been a steady presence on the road this year with stadium dates throughout Europe and the U.S., thrilling fans with set lists that spanned the band’s earliest days ("Whiplash," "Creeping Death"), mainstream rock hits ("Enter Sandman," "Nothing Else Matters") and their Metallica-ized version of the ‘60s-era Irish folk song, "Whiskey in the Jar."

The band also received an injection of pop culture relevancy when its 1986 song "Master of Puppets" became a viral favorite  this summer after its use in the Season 4 finale of Netflix's "Stranger Things."

Metallica Tour 2022: All Tour Schedule and Tickets

After wrapping up 2021 with lots of achievements and work, Metallica will hit the road all around the world again in 2022 without even resting. So, here is the list of the regarded band’s already scheduled concerts for its 2022 tour , down below.

Many of us know that 2021 has been a really busy year for Metallica , as they have continued to keep feeding its fans its unique music during its 4-decade-lasting career. One of “the big four” bands has also wrapped the past year after celebrating its 40th anniversary, honoring all fans along with themselves with a historic pair of 40th-anniversary shows, as well. And the regarded metal band also doesn’t seem dedicated to stopping at all, as they have also a huge 2022 tour already planned for them.

So, as the regarded band is already set to share its music with all its fans, we listed the whole scheduled shows of Metallica in 2022 for you along with details. But we also suggest you stay tuned as we will also update this list, in case some changes or new dates would be added to the band’s upcoming tour plan, as well.

Most of the tickets for Metallica ‘s upcoming shows in 2022 are already on sale with also lots of package options for fans to choose the best option that fits with their budgets, as well. There are 8 fan packages determined so far for the close shows, which are comprised of Silver, Diamond, Diamond Deluxe, Gold, Diamond VIP, Gold Deluxe, Gold VIP, Deluxe Hotel, with around $865 prices that increase according to your choice, serving the best offers for your needs.

In the meantime, the standard tickets for the upcoming shows of Metallica in 2022 are starting at around $300, whose least price is seemingly $287, and getting higher according to the seats and levels you will be purchasing. And except for the sooner concerts, the late shows’ ticket levels aren’t also determined except their standard ones, as well. This tour probably helps more revenue for Metallica’s net worth until now.

They also confirmed that they will launch a 2022 European  tour  2022. It’s “ The Return Of The European Summer Vacation ” tour that will see the metal giants performing seven shows across mainland Europe between June and July 2022. The first show will take place at the Copenhell festival on June 15th, 2022 in Denmark and will continue until NOS Alive in Lisbon on July 8th, 2022.

Metallica shared a statement about the upcoming European concerts:

“We have waited far too long to say these words – we’re getting back out there and are finally announcing our return to Europe in 2022! Needless to say, we cannot wait to see all of you once again as our European Tallica Family will finally have a chance to reunite in June and July of next year. We can’t wait to once again take the stage as part of the time-honored tradition of summer music festivals and we’re excited to see some of our friends, both new and old, at Copenhell, Pinkpop, Firenze Rocks, Prague Rocks, Rock Werchter, Mad Cool, and NOS Alive.”

So, we also advise you to get a wiggle on while the best tickets have already started melting fast. And before you take action, here are the scheduled shows of Metallica so far in 2022 .

Metallica Set For Fortnite Festival Concert: 'Metallica: Fuel. Fire. Fury'

See latest videos, charts and news

Trending on Billboard

The staging for Metallica’s tour is built to do just that, though, on the kind of grand scale well-suited for football stadiums. The band performs in the round, on a big stage in the shape of a ring that surrounds fans with tickets to the VIP “Snake Pit.” That means anyone on the floor isn’t actually all that far from the band – but also that the traditional video screen setup doesn’t work. So the band put the screens, and most of the speakers, on eight massive towers. During some songs, the colors were bleached out, making the footage one-hued to underscore the drama. Most bands would seem dwarfed by the scale, but Metallica rose to the occasion. More space just means more space to conquer.

The only drawback to the band’s over-the-top staging was that the same scale that made it so spectacular drained a bit of the band’s chemistry. With multiple microphones and several drum sets for Lars Ulrich – one would disappear beneath the stage and another would come up so he could play while facing another part of the crowd – everyone could see everything, but not always at the same time. The ring was so big that “Wherever I May Roam” (stark and dramatic as ever, toward the end of the show) could have been self-referential. But Metallica wanted to out-do itself, and it did. This kind of maximalism is only silly if you can’t carry it off – and Metallica does.

By stadium standards, the band keeps the music fresh, too. Sure, it has enough classics to spread over two nights – “One” and “Enter Sandman” on May 26, “Blackened” and “Master of Puppets” two days later – but it also pulled out “Whiskey in the Jar,” a traditional-by-way-of Thin Lizzy song that sounded very human even at this gigantic scale. For at least a few minutes, the stadium felt like the world’s biggest bar – if you can imagine a bar with eight 14-ton video towers – and if any crowd deserved a drinking song it was this one.

After “Whiskey” the band turned to “One” and then “Sandman,” a metal song that has acquired the patina of classic rock. There would be more surprises in two days at the next show, and the crowd pondered the possibilities as it filed out of the venue – more classics, a rarity, who knows? Like the best big rock shows, it would feel familiar but sound fresh. It was live but also, somehow, much bigger.

Metallica Perform First Concert of 2022: Photos, Set List, Video

Metallica played their first concert of 2022 in Las Vegas last night. The show was opened by Greta Van Fleet .

You can see our exclusive photos from the show below, as well as fan-filmed footage of the performance and the full set list.

When asked recently about their role as opening band, Greta Van Fleet's Sam Kiszka noted their approach: "I think really harnessing all of our energy to stand up to an act like Metallica that plays so loud with so much gusto," he told Consequence   in 2021. "The reality is, we're nothing like Metallica. In some strange world, we are grouped in the same genre in a way, but there is no through-line between our music and their music. There's everything in between, so it creates kind of a very cool bill."

Metallica are currently scheduled to play a handful of dates in South America in April. The band is slated to play only two stadium shows in the U.S. this summer: Highmark Stadium in Buffalo, N.Y. and PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pa., this August.

Recent tour reviews

Electrifying as ever with their incredible performance and stage presence, the members of Metallica delivered the goods and more last night with a nice cross section of numbers running the gamut of their colossal catalog! There were occasional pauses to interact and converse with the crowd, but the band segued their way into one song after another the majority of the evening. The night opened up with an intro of the Ecstasy of Gold followed by the title cut off of the band's latest effort Hard Wired to Self Destruct. James Hetfield's vocals were as strong as ever from beginning to end. Kirk Hammett engaged in one brain crushing guitar solo after another, Lars Ulrich brought a great and almost nonstop back beat with his furious drumming and Rob Trujillo provided excellent bass work including a great treatment of the solo the late Cliff Burton was well known for on Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth). During the aforementioned bass solo video footage of Burton performing onstage accented the music perfectly. Other exceptional highlights included Kirk's stellar guitar shredding accompanied frequently by usage of his wah pedal. Cuts such as Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Creeping Death and the encore Enter Sandman in particular contained solos showcasing his seemingly boundless talent! Things heated up literally as well during the songs Fight Fire with Fire and Sandman when pyrotechnics were activated and flames shot up from the stage. At the end Ulrich tossed sticks out into the audience. Hetfield, Trujillo and Hammett threw and shook picks from little jack o' lantern tins out into the crowd, the picks of which boasting the band logo as well as the theatre's location and concert date on them. Great souvenirs in even something so small right there as my husband and I each scooped one up off the floor! A grand night out, the next one of which cannot come soon enough!

The impatient wait had been going on for months - I booked this show when tickets went on sale back in March or whenever it was, and October had take so long to come around - but finally it was here: Metallica day!

The day started with a trip to the pop-up merch store in London, then onto the O2 for an agonising queue (good thing it's what us Brits do best, apart from moan about it of course) before finally getting in and finding my seat - which, by pure luck, was a superb view. Again, what felt like days, but in reality was only 30-40 mins wait, the lights dimmed, the background music shut off, and the familiar notes of the intro track, "The Ecstasy of Gold", complete with video footage from "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", began to ring out, to rapturous roaring and whistling from the 20,000 strong crowd. The hairs on my arms are standing on end just recounting it for this review. And then we were in: full-bore, 100mph, Metallica took to the stage and belted out song after song after song with barely a moment to catch your breath before the next does of thrash metal came your way. "Thrash metal?", I hear you say, "Metallica hasn't been thrash metal since the 80's!". Oh my friend, trust me when I say thrash metal - we had some of the best early work represented tonight, not least with half a dozen track from the new album "Hardwired... To Self Destruct" that included unrelenting riff after riff, from the likes of "Hardwired", "Atlas Rise", "Moth Into Flame", coupled with one of the heaviest tracks they've ever written "Dream No More", plus "Halo on Fire" and "Now That We're Dead". All segmented in-between some of the bands greatest songs; "Seek & Destroy", "Through The Never", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Through The Never", "One", "Sad But True", "Fuel", the obligatory cover, this time from the Misfits' "Die Die My Darling", before ending the show with "Master of Puppets".

Of course, it wasn't the end - back for the encore the intro to "Damage Inc" came on, before they ripped all the way through it, eventually slowing the pace to play the ever-loved "Nothing Else Matters" and finally ending on probably their most well known song "Enter Sandman"

It was a great varied selection of tunes that spans most of their career - the only notable exceptions being there was nothing from "Load", "St Anger" or the previous record "Death Magnetic". But otherwise all the other studio albums were represented. Some guitar and bass doodles from Kirk and Rob, before Rob gave us a wonderful tribute to Cliff by playing "Anesthesia".

If you get the chance to go, then go see this show - it's truly magnificent, from a band with 36 years experience in being the biggest metal band on the planet, and it shows you just why they are. I just wish I had a ticket for tomorrow night too.

2nd September show in Cobenhagen.

Tallica promised us a unique show because this concert was postponed show from February. Many people travel a long way to see them in February including me traveling from Iceland.

The moment when I heard Seek & Destory in the #3rd slot then I knew this was going to be something special.

They performed Thought The Never in slot #4 and that song has not been played for 4 years. The next song was The Day That Never Comes and we did not believe that because in our wildest dreams we hoped to have that on the list, we jumped like there was no day tomorrow.

Dream No More was in the slot #7 and that was the second time Metallica has played that song. It was nice to hear Breadfan in slot #10. We saw many drons flying over the stage in Moth Into Flame, which was amazing!

Fight Fire With Fire was in the encore faster than ever.

Me and my friends walked away from Royal Arena in great mood with a big smile on our faces and with a hoarse throut, like James was in February.

About the unique show as we where promised in February it was only UNIQUE for 2 days because Amsterdam got almost the same setlist. But we got a free T-shirt, that was probably the unique thing for us.

We where hoping for some live debut like Murder One, Spit Out The Bones but it did not happend.

The song ManUnkind was performed tonight in Paris (10th September) and that is unique.

Iceland has been waiting since 2004 for Metallica to come back to Iceland when they held the biggest indore concert in Reykjavík. We do not want to wait another 23 years like we did before 2004.

All the best,

Kirk Hammett says Metallica don’t tour enough: “What it’s all about is playing guitar and writing, recording, going out on tour”

Metallica’s guitarist wants to spend more time on the road, according to his recent appearance on the metal titans’ podcast

Kirk Hammett

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett has said he wishes the heavy metal titans spent more time touring.

The 61-year-old, who joined the band in 1983 and has appeared on their every studio album, made the comment on a new episode of official podcast The Metallica Report .

“I’m just happy to be out here and bringing the music to the people, man, like I always am,” Hammett said when asked about returning to the road last month, following a six-month break from live shows (per Blabbermouth ).

He continued: “And I’m happy having the feeling of, like, Metallica is a working, touring band, ’cause sometimes I miss that feeling, ’cause I don't believe we tour enough. But that’s just how it is.

“So, what I can get out of this, I’m always up for it. It’s just, like, ‘Yeah, bring it on.’ ’Cause this is what it’s all about, is playing guitar and writing, recording, going out on tour. It’s what it’s all about. And I don’t feel that there’s enough of it in my life right now.”

According to setlist wiki setlist.fm , Metallica have significantly slowed their touring schedule since the 2010s. The band played 95 concerts in 2009 and 63 in 2010, but since then have never played more than 50 annually.

By comparison, the metal stars’ busiest year on the road was 1992, when they started touring to promote their blockbuster self-titled album (AKA The Black Album ). They played 168 dates.

In May 2022, Metallica singer/guitarist James Hetfield expressed fears onstage that he was getting too old to play well. The musician was 58 at the time.

“I’ve gotta tell you I wasn’t feeling very good before I came out here,” Hetfield said to the crowd at the Estádio do Mineirão in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

“[I was] feeling a little bit insecure, like I’m an old guy, [I] can’t play anymore – all this bullshit that I tell myself in my head.”

Referring to his bandmates, the frontman continued: “So I talked to these guys, and they helped me – as simple as that.

“They gave me a hug and said, ‘Hey, if you’re struggling onstage, we’ve got your back.’ And I tell you, it means the world to me.”

Metallica are currently touring Europe and will next perform at the Tons Of Rock festival in Oslo, Norway, on June 26.

Sons Of METALLICA Members Announce BASTARDANE And OTTTO Summer 2024 Tour

BASTARDANE , the band featuring drummer Castor Hetfield , the son of METALLICA frontman James Hetfield , will team up with OTTTO , the three-piece band featuring Tye Trujillo , the son of METALLICA bassist Robert Trujillo , will join forces for "The Reconquest Tour" , a 24-date trek across North America that will see BASTARDANE perform songs from its recently released album "Catatonic Symphony" and serve as the debut tour for OTTTO 's new singer Tito Dutta .

Dutta bring a fresh dynamic to the Los Angeles trio, which is working on new music with the Indian-born singer.

"It's an intriguing and a new fundamental milestone in the trajectory of OTTTO ," Tye Trujillo says of Dutta 's addition.

OTTTO 's debut album, "Life Is A Game" , arrived in the spring of 2023 with Metal Injection saying " OTTTO are destined for stardom. There's little doubt here."

BASTARDANE 's new album, "Catatonic Symphony" , features 16 tracks spread across 77 minutes, showcasing the Los Angeles-based band's evolution since their 2022 debut, "Is This Rage?" Sonic Perspectives said "it won't be long before these sludgy thrashers are ready to take their own seat upon the heavy metal throne."

Castor Hetfield shares: "The new songs we've got on 'Catatonic Symphony' kick butt. We put a lot of heart into the album and cannot wait to hit the road and play it live."

"The Reconquest Tour" dates:

August 02 - New York, NY @ Market Hotel August 03 - Boston, MA 2 Brighton Music Hall August 04 - Montreal, QC @ Foufones Electriques August 06 - Toronto, ON @ Sneaky Dee's August 08 - Pittsburgh, PA @ Thunderbird Café & Music Hall August 09 - Detroit, MI @ The Sanctuary August 10 - Chicago, IL @ House of Blues August 11 - Indianapolis, IN @ State Street Pub August 12 - Louisville, KY @ Zanzabar August 14 - St. Louis, MO @ Blueberry Hill August 16 - Milwaukee, WI @ X-Ray Arcade August 17 - Minneapolis, MN @ Varsity Theater August 18 - Fargo, ND @ The Aquarium August 19 - Winnipeg, MB @ The Park Theatre August 22 - Saskatoon, SK @ Black Cat Tavern August 23 - Calgary, AB @ Modern Love August 24 - Edmonton, AB @ The Starlite Room August 27 - Vancouver, BC @ The Pearl August 28 - Portland, OR @ Twilight Café & Bar August 31 - Seattle, WA @ The Crocodile September 02 - Berkeley, CA @ The Cornerstone September 04 - San Diego, CA @ Soda Bar September 05 - Costa Mesa, CA @ The Wayfarer September 06 - Los Angeles, CA @ The Moroccan Lounge

BASTARDANE is Castor Hetfield (vocals/drums), Ethan Sirotzki (guitar), Luca Badan (bass) and Jacobious Lovebone (vocals). The Los Angeles-based act has released two albums: "Catatonic Symphony" (2024) and "Is This Rage?" (2022). Praised for their intense, unapologetic live performances, BASTARDANE makes the kind of music that they want to make because they want to make it.

Castor , who lists bands like CORROSION OF CONFORMITY , OPETH and TOOL as major influences, told Savannah Morning News that he isn't overly concerned about having his father's name brought up in every article about BASTARDANE .

"All of us are our father's sons, mine just happens to be very successful in the industry that we're in," Castor said. "It's not bothersome, but it is a little annoying when people try to compare us, because obviously we're our own people and he's his own person. We're making our own kind of music. Online, when you search our band, my dad's face is all over the Internet and it's a little strange for me. We are our own people and want to cut our own path. We're not trying to ride off of anybody else's success here."

OTTTO is Tye Trujillo (bass), Triko Chavez (drums) and Tito Dutta (vocals). OTTTO 's recently released album, "Life Is A Game" , is a blend between heavy hardcore punk, sludge, and alternative. Experience Vinyl described the album as "going at it hard, fast, and without any traditional rules," while Kerrang! said the band is a "hyper-ambitious trio who refuse to be pigeonholed and just want to have fun."

Hetfield and Trujillo aren't the only members of METALLICA whose offspring have followed in their footsteps. Two of drummer Lars Ulrich 's sons play together in TAIPEI HOUSTON .

In December 2021, BASTARDANE , TAIPEI HOUSTON and OTTTO performed as part of METALLICA 's "San Francisco Takeover", a four-day citywide celebration of the band's 40th anniversary that also included a film festival, photo exhibit and curated lineup of smaller venue shows featuring other acts.

Metallica’s James Hetfield reveals anxiety struggles before 2024 tour: “We’re old, we can’t do this”

Metallica singer/guitarist James Hetfield has explained the anxiety he faced before hitting the road with the heavy metal titans last month.

Hetfield, who’s been fronting Metallica across Europe since late May, opened up on a new episode of official podcast The Metallica Report , where he expressed self-doubt due to his age and revealed he suffered from nightmares before starting the tour.

“I start to doubt myself,” Hetfield confessed (as transcribed by Metal Injection ), “[thinking,] ‘We're old, we can’t do this’ – all that bullshit everyone tells themselves before they go into something they care about.”

Moving onto his nightmares, Hetfield continued: “So, having the nightmares about how I’m the only one who cares about what we're doing here: ‘Where is everybody?’

“I show up at the gig, everyone’s goofing off, or there’s 200 people backstage and thinking, ‘Where’s my stuff? Where’s the setlist? What songs are we doing?’

“And then, typical things like the guitar neck is made of rubber, and there are only two strings on it. And, ‘Where's my roadie?’, and the guitar cord won’t let me get to the microphone. Silly stuff like that.

“That has to happen, and I don’t freak out over it. All you do is you practice, and then you build that comes back pretty quickly.”

Hetfield finished by discussing how he manages his anxieties: “It’s part of the cycle; it just is.

“You have anxiety build up, and don’t let it get the best of ya because you have that balance of anxiety and faith. And as soon as you get up there, it’s all gonna be good.”

Metallica started their current tour in Munich, Germany, on May 24, where they overcame rainstorms and a video tower being struck by lightning to put on their show.

The band will next perform at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, Finland, on June 7 and 9.

Pantera’s headlining set at the festival comes ahead of their recently announced first UK and Ireland tour in 20 years . They are set to head across the pond in early 2025.

The band previously announced their plans to reunite with a revamped line-up back in July 2022 – this saw Zakk Wylde ( Black Label Society , Ozzy Osbourne ) on guitar and Charlie Benante ( Anthrax ) on drums joining original members, frontman Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown.

The news broke following the band signing a deal with Artist Group International for a series of US tour dates .

While the reformed line-up have taken to the stage multiple times across the US since reforming – including acting as support for Metallica on their ‘72 Seasons’ tou r – their dates in the UK and Ireland have been limited.

In a four-star review of Download 2024 , NME shared: “At first glance, Download 2024 seemed to be marred by a range of factors that could have signalled its downfall – even festival boss Andy Copping admitted that it was the “hardest year” to secure a line-up and the team approached over “21 bands” to find headliners.

“Pair that with the threat of boycott in retaliation against the Barclays sponsorship and news that this year could be the wettest in a century, and the hopes of it coming out smoothly began to waver. Yet, against the odds the festival delivers one of its most promising editions in recent memory, and proves that it is one of the main events leading the way when it comes to creating opportunities for the next generation of headliners.”

Elsewhere, last year, two major German festivals removed Pantera from the line-up over an outcry relating to past allegations of racism , which was followed by a cancelled appearance in Vienna .

They were due to perform at 2023’s Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park, however, it was confirmed that they had been removed from the line-ups following a public outcry.

“In the last few weeks, we have had many intensive conversations with artists, our partners and you, the festival fans, we have continued to deal with the criticism together and decided to remove the band from the programme,” read a statement from the festival at the time.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
