How to achieve platinum blonde hair

1. pre-lighten locks.

First, hair must be pre-lightened. Use a lightener from the Blondor range , and aim for a level 10 to reach platinum brightness. This can take a few sessions, and the hair will typically come out as the palest yellow shade, but don’t panic – the soft yellow pigment is completely normal and works as a base for your toner. Go any lighter than this, and you risk removing the natural keratin – the backbone of the hair.

The Ice Blondes Take New York Fashion Week: Five Models Share Their Platinum Hair Survival Strategies

The new super flaxen hair color that’s taken hold of fashion in recent months seems to have reached a crescendo at the New York shows this week, with the icy white shade showing up on runways from Rag & Bone to Opening Ceremony. From the signature arctic blonde of Sasha Luss to the extreme platinum appeal of Ashleigh Good, it’s a bold statement look that requires its fair share of high maintenance upkeep.

Case in point: Backstage at Altuzarra , hairstylist Odile Gilbert took a little extra time when Luss sat down in her chair, working Kérastase Lait Cristal conditioner through her hair. “They have to use masks—at least once a week,” she said of girls who have taken the platinum plunge. A blonde herself, Gilbert regularly takes her own advice. “I put [one] on this morning,” she said of the company’s Masque Force Architecte treatment —which, along with improving the quality and shine of the hair, serves a secondary purpose in the midst of a back-to-back show schedule. “It’s just a nice feeling to do something for yourself,” said Gilbert.

Here, we ask a few of New York Fashion Week’s favorite faces to name their secret weapons—including a newly blonde and well-on-her-way-to-platinum Aymeline Valade.

Sasha Luss “The base of everything is that you have a good colorist who understands your hair. I see Victoria Hunter [at New York City’s Whittemore House]. Every day during Fashion Week, because our hair gets ruined, I also do a Rahua hair mask mixed with the Leonor Greyl oil. I leave it on for 30 to 40 minutes. I think I’m going to go to golden next, and Victoria will help me—everyone is a blonde now!—or maybe I’ll cut it short. It’s time for a change, Linda Evangelista –style!”

Ashleigh Good “My one tip is that I don’t brush my hair. Ever. Only when I have conditioner in it. I use Sachajuan Intensive Repair Conditioner .”

Aymeline Valade “I’m using very natural stuff. I take olive oil or jojoba oil or any kind of vegetable oil. I put it on one day, and I keep it in my hair all day, and then the morning after I just [wash it out] normally. For the next three days, it’s good. After those three days, I put conditioner in my hair all day long and wash it out, and then it’s good for three days again. I do this routine all the time. My favorite products are by Christophe Robin , because he just does the best. It’s completely natural and very rich.”

Julia Nobis “I use Redken All Soft Argan-6 oil to keep my hair moisturized—and Moroccanoil .”

Devon Windsor “If I don’t need to wash it, I don’t—maybe one, or two times a week. Then I put It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product on the ends every morning and at night. For blondes looking to refresh their color this season, say goodbye to warm, golden, honey hues. This year is all about going cooler and brighter.

"Super pale, light, bright blondes will be pushing the limits for this ultra-chic modern look ," predicted celebrity colorist for Matrix, George Papanikolas. "Pale, icy blonde is the ultimate, glamorous runway look."

But before you go booking your next salon appointment , there are a few things to keep in mind regarding the icy blond color: "Unless you are starting with naturally very light hair, this process can take several appointments to achieve," said Papanikolas. Because the hue is so vivid and light, those with naturally dark hair will have a bit harder of a time achieving a true icy tone — but it's not impossible. "You will need to start with lots of delicate baby blond highlights framing the face and crown. Your stylist should also lift most of your ends to a pale baby blonde. Ideally the ends should be the blondest and brightest so that you still have dimension and movement without looking like an all over platinum blond."

Another thing to keep in mind is the upkeep of a color like this. "It's not easy for everyone to pull off due to financial upkeep. Apply to damp hair. If BLONDME Pastel Toning is used after bleaching or highlift colouration, end the oxidation process first with BLONDME Mask. Mix BLONDME Pastel Toning and BLONDME Premium Developer 2%|7 Vol. in equal parts: 1:1. Mix thoroughly until a homogeneous mixture is achieved. Apply the mixture immediately after preparation. Use plenty of product to ensure even colour results. Development time: Up to 20 minutes. Allow visual control. Additional heat is NOT recommended.
