2024-25 men's NCAA basketball transfer portal tracker: updates

michigan state college visit

  • Graduate of University of Delaware. Follow on X

Transfer portal season has become the busiest two months of the college basketball calendar. Entire rosters fall apart and get rebuilt in mere weeks, with some teams needing to go into the portal for 10 or 11 players. Coaching staffs spend two or three years recruiting high school players, and now, they spend two or three weeks -- sometimes less -- recruiting transfers.

There will be upward of 2,000 players in the portal by the time it closes for undergraduate students on May 1. The vast majority will find a new home in a similar timeframe.

It's a lot to digest.

Just like the coaching carousel tracker , we're going to have a constantly updated transfer portal tracker this offseason. Find all of the latest intel and buzz on the available players in the portal. School lists, visit plans, target boards -- all of the movement will be discussed here.

Keep track of ESPN's ranking of the top 100 transfers here .

Duke loses seventh player to the portal

Sean Stewart , a former top-20 recruit, announced he's entering the transfer portal Friday. Stewart came out of high school with a reputation as an elite rebounder but failed to carve out a consistent role in Durham. Averaged 2.6 points and 3.2 rebounds in 33 games off the bench.

Outlook: Stewart follows Jeremy Roach , Mark Mitchell , TJ Power , Jaylen Blakes , Christian Reeves and Jaden Schutt , while Kyle Filipowski and Jared McCain left for the NBA and Ryan Young is out of eligibility. Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster are the lone returnees for Jon Scheyer who is, however, bringing in a six-man recruiting class ranked No. 1 in the country.

Top-50 transfer Adou Thiero down to five schools

The 6-foot-8 Kentucky forward has cut his list to five schools, sources told ESPN: Pitt , North Carolina , Arkansas , Indiana and Kentucky. Thiero started 19 games this season for the Wildcats, bringing energy and explosiveness to the frontcourt. Averaged 7.2 points and 5.0 rebounds.

Outlook: The projected first-round pick in ESPN's 2025 mock draft ientered the portal before John Calipari left Lexington for Arkansas, so it's interesting to see the Razorbacks make his final list. And Kentucky fans will be pleased to see a potential return to Lexington is still possible. Pitt has quietly had some buzz for a couple weeks due to Thiero being from the Pittsburgh suburbs.

michigan state college visit

Drexel 's Amari Williams down to three schools, visiting Kentucky

Williams has cut his list to St. John's , Kentucky and Mississippi State , his agent told ESPN. The 6-foot-10 big man is one of the best interior defenders in the portal, winning CAA Defensive Player of the Year three times and earning first-team All-CAA honors this past season. Averaged 12.2 points and 7.8 rebounds.

Outlook: Williams will take his final visit to Kentucky this weekend, and the Wildcats could badly use an experienced post defender to anchor their frontcourt. They've made a strong push in recent days under new coach Mark Pope, but St. John's remains involved, and he would be a good fit at Mississippi State given Chris Jans' defensive history.

Chucky Hepburn becomes latest Wisconsin departure

Shortly after AJ Storr committed to Kansas, Wisconsin took another hit: Three-year starter Chucky Hepburn is transferring. Hepburn started 103 games for Greg Gard, averaging 9.2 points and 3.9 assists this past season. He put up 12.2 points and shot 40.5% from 3-point range in 2022-23.

Outlook: Aside from Hepburn's next destination, the story here is Wisconsin losing another key contributor to the portal. In addition to Storr and Hepburn, the Badgers have also lost Connor Essegian , who saw a diminished role this past season after a delayed start due to injury but averaged 11.7 points as a freshman in 2022-23. Gard hasn't landed a player from the portal yet -- and one of the Badgers' top targets, Frankie Fidler , was a high school teammate of Hepburn's.

michigan state college visit

Kansas lands AJ Storr

Storr, the No. 3 player in ESPN's transfer rankings, committed on Thursday . He was a second-team All-Big Ten selection after averaging 16.8 points and 3.9 rebounds in leading Wisconsin to the conference tournament title game and a 5-seed in the NCAA tournament.

Outlook: Bill Self has added some much-needed playmaking and shot-making -- a major concern for the Jayhawks during the 2023-24 campaign. Storr is the third perimeter addition, following South Dakota State's Zeke Mayo , the Summit League Player of the Year, and Florida's Riley Kugel , a mercurial but talented wing with NBA potential. The Jayhawks are also still in the mix for Alabama transfer Rylan Griffen .

UConn finds its Donovan Clingan replacement

The Huskies clearly needed a big man this cycle in the portal, and they landed Michigan Wolverines transfer Tarris Reed Jr . on Wednesday. Reed visited Storrs this past weekend and ended his recruitment shortly after leaving. He's a former ESPN 100 prospect who averaged 9.0 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks this past season.

Outlook: Dan Hurley essentially needs to rebuild the starting lineup that won the Huskies their second consecutive national title. Tristen Newton and Cam Spencer are out of eligibility, while Stephon Castle and Clingan could be NBA draft lottery picks. UConn is targeting a big man and at least one perimeter player. With Reed now in the fold, Hurley can turn toward guards and wings.

Jeremy Roach announces portal intentions

A big-name point guard just went on the market. Duke senior Jeremy Roach announced Tuesday he plans to enter the transfer portal and the NBA draft, which suddenly makes available one of the best and most experienced point guards in the country.

Outlook: Roach started 108 games over four seasons with the Blue Devils, earning third-team All-ACC honors this past season. He averaged career-highs across the board, putting up 14.0 points, 3.3 assists and shooting 42.9% from 3-point range. This move has been speculated for several weeks, with a long list of schools linked as potential landing spots: Syracuse , Villanova , Georgetown , Arkansas , Baylor , Ole Miss and more.

The No. 1 transfer is off the board: Oumar Ballo commits to Indiana

After initially setting multiple visits, the Arizona transfer didn't even get off Indiana's campus before ending his recruitment and telling ESPN he's committing to the Hoosiers. A two-time first-team All-Pac-12 selection, the No. 1 transfer has been one of the dominant big men in the country under Tommy Lloyd. He averaged 12.9 points and 10.1 rebounds this season.

Outlook: How Mike Woodson uses Malik Reneau and Ballo together will be interesting, given both players prefer to operate around the basket. It's also worth taking a quick look at where the other programs in pursuit of Ballo will turn. North Carolina could look at Danny Wolf and Jonas Aidoo , while Louisville is battling Kentucky for Aly Khalifa . Arkansas just landed Zvonimir Ivisic .

Horizon League POY Trey Townsend sets visits

Townsend, who helped lead Oakland to a first-round NCAA tournament win over Kentucky with 17 points and 12 rebounds, has set the rest of his visit schedule, according to his agent George Langberg of GSL Sports Group. Townsend is currently on campus at Arizona, then will visit Ohio State on Thursday and Friday and finish up with a trip to Louisville this weekend. He also recently visited Michigan.

Outlook: Townsend is one of the most productive mid-major transfers in the portal. He averaged 17.3 points and 8.1 rebounds this season and was able to perform at a high level in big games. The 6-foot-6 power forward went for 28 points against Xavier, 19 points and 10 rebounds against Illinois, 30 points and 13 rebounds against NC State and also had 38 points in the Horizon tournament title game.

The first Lexington-to-Fayetteville move

Kentucky transfer Zvonimir Ivisic announced Monday he's committing to Arkansas , following John Calipari to the Razorbacks. Ivisic is the first player to officially follow Calipari to Fayetteville, but he likely won't be the last.

Outlook: Ivisic, a 7-foot-2 center from Croatia, has an incredibly high ceiling due to his offensive skill set. He can make shots from the perimeter, run the floor and is an adept shot-blocker at the other end. He had 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals in 16 minutes off the bench in his first college game against Georgia, and averaged 5.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 15 games as a freshman.

Texas starters entering portal

After a weekend that saw Rodney Terry land three players from the portal -- Indiana State exports Julian Larry and Jayson Kent , and Arkansas transfer Tramon Mark -- Monday brought the fallout. Tyrese Hunter and Dillon Mitchell , two Texas starters, are planning to enter the transfer portal.

Outlook: Hunter has started 106 games in three college seasons at Texas and Iowa State and had the best offensive season of his career in 2023-24, putting up 11.1 points and 4.1 assists. Mitchell, meanwhile, is a versatile frontcourt player who took major strides as a sophomore, averaging 9.6 points and 7.5 rebounds. The news comes on the heels of top-50 recruit Cam Scott requesting a release from his letter of intent to Texas to reopen his recruitment.

Read more: Texas loses starters Tyrese Hunter, Dillon Mitchell to transfer portal

D.J. Wagner enters portal

Wagner, a former top-five recruit, was a household name in the high school ranks who originally chose Kentucky over Louisville after an intense recruiting process between the two schools. But the 6-foot-4 New Jersey native had an uneven freshman season: putting up big numbers during the first half then finishing with single-digit scoring output in 10 of his final 13 games. Averaged 9.9 points and 3.3 assists.

Outlook: It's unclear where Wagner will look to continue his college career. He still has NBA hype, projected as a second-round pick if he opted to enter this year's draft. He could follow former Kentucky coach John Calipari to Arkansas but he's expected to have an open recruitment. Despite his up-and-down freshman campaign, he's one of the most dynamic guards in the portal.

Aaron Bradshaw commits to Ohio State

The former top-10 recruit had a delayed start to his Kentucky career due to a foot injury suffered last spring, but eventually made an impact once on the floor 00 including a double-double against Penn in his second game. Didn't have a consistent role down the stretch of the season though, barely playing in the SEC and NCAA tournaments. Averaged 4.9 points and 3.3 rebounds.

Outlook: Despite the middling numbers, Bradshaw's ceiling makes him an intriguing addition for new head coach Jake Diebler. He can run the floor, he has some skill with the ball in his hands and he can finish around the rim and block shots. What does this mean for the other teams in the mix for Bradshaw? North Carolina was hoping to get him on campus and now the Tar Heels might have to turn to Yale transfer Danny Wolf .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Aaron Bradshaw (@aaron_bradshaw23)

Indiana landed Rice, looking for others in portal

Mike Woodson is wasting no time rebuilding his roster after a down year in Bloomington. The Hoosiers already landed Washington State 's Myles Rice , one of the best point guards in the portal.

Outlook: They're also expected to host Stanford 's Kanaan Carlyle for a visit this week. Carlyle is a former top-50 recruit capable of explosive performances. Neither Rice nor Carlyle is a knockdown shooter, but Indiana is also pursuing Connor Hickman ( Bradley ) and Ryan Conwell ( Indiana State ) to fill that role. Up front, the top target is No. 1 overall transfer Oumar Ballo . The Arizona big man is expected to visit Bloomington this week, and Indiana is thought to be in a pretty good spot. Should Ballo leave his visit without committing, the Hoosiers could turn to Drexel 's Amari Williams , who also visits later in the week. Ballo is the far superior offensive player, but Williams is a three-time CAA Defensive Player of the Year.

Take a look at the numbers behind Michigan's hire of former Florida Atlantic basketball coach Dusty May.

michigan state college visit

Dusty May has Michigan in the mix for several top targets

May didn't have a completely empty cupboard in Ann Arbor when he took over for Juwan Howard , and George Washington III added to the returnees when he opted to remove his name from the transfer portal and stay at Michigan. But the former Florida Atlantic coach is looking to build a competitive roster in year one, and he's taking some big swings in the portal.

Outlook: At the top of the target list: two of his former FAU players in Johnell Davis -- arguably the top perimeter player in the portal -- and center Vladislav Goldin . Houston was also pursuing Davis, but the Cougars landed Milos Uzan over the weekend; is Kelvin Sampson's program still in play? Michigan is also in the mix for Yale 's Danny Wolf , a first-team All-Ivy selection this past season. While the Wolverines are likely the leader for both Goldin and Wolf as things stand, the first 7-foot center to commit might send the other elsewhere -- or perhaps they battle it out once they get to campus. Oakland 's Trey Townsend , who posted dominant numbers against high-major competition this past season, was set to visit Ann Arbor on Sunday, too. On the perimeter, Michigan is perceived as the leader for Auburn 's transfer Tre Donaldson . Ohio State 's Roddy Gayle Jr . is expected to visit Ann Arbor soon, too. Keep an eye on another Auburn transfer, Aden Holloway . His sister, Mila Holloway, is signed to play basketball at Michigan next season.

michigan state college visit

North Carolina 's big man pursuit

It's clear that Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels want a true 5-man from the portal this spring. Armando Bacot has used up his eligibility, James Okonkwo barely played and already hit the portal, and Jalen Washington is the lone option remaining for that position.

Outlook: Former top-10 prospect Aaron Bradshaw was expected to visit Ohio State this past weekend, but UNC is heavily in the mix and has him near or at the top of the target list. The Tar Heels are also battling a handful of schools for Oumar Ballo . Will Ballo get through his visits to Indiana, Louisville and Kansas State , though? Rutgers ' Clifford Omoruyi , one of the best defensive players in the country, has had communication with North Carolina, as has the aforementioned Danny Wolf . Could the Tar Heels make a run at Tennessee 's Jonas Aidoo , too? Aidoo, who entered the portal late last week, is a Durham native.

Michigan State Football to Host Transfer Receiver From Auburn

Transfer wide receiver Ja'Varrius Johnson scheduled a visit with Michigan State.

  • Author: Jack Lintner

In this story:

Auburn wide receiver Ja'Varrius Johnson entered the transfer portal and has already scheduled multiple visits with other schools. Johnson's most recent visit was with UCF and with his former head coach Gus Malzahn.

Two of the schools he has scheduled visits with next are Arizona and Michigan State, per Pete Nakos of On3.

Johnson would be a very good fit for the Spartan offense, as it has a very open wide receiver room with no guarantee of who the starter is. Michigan State has two new quarterbacks, and almost an entirely new coaching staff, with new players on both sides of the ball as well.

Johnson was a four-star recruit and was ranked as the 46th-best wide receiver in his class and 11th in the state of Alabama. He is a little undersized standing 5-foot-10 and weighing 167 lbs. Over his four seasons with the Tigers, Johnson caught 64 passes for 1,114 yards and eight touchdowns.

The transfer wide receiver caught passes from former Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne last season. Thorne spent four years (redshirted his freshman season) with the Spartans before transferring to Auburn.

With a few underwhelming seasons, hopefully, if Johnson signs with Michigan State, he and whoever is named the starting quarterback can get it done. Johnson is quick and shifty, and even though undersized, can get open and catch passes.

Adding Johnson would be a big first step in recruitment, as once the Spartans make smaller upgrades at positions in need, better players will sign with them as long as they start winning and improving their roster. Michigan State wide receiver Tre Mosley and Johnson will make a good one-two punch with whichever quarterback is throwing them the ball. Tommy Schuster and Aidan Chiles can lead a sound offense, and with two usable receivers, that is their chance.

The Michigan State spring showcase is this Saturday, and the new-look team will be on display. Spartans coach Jonathan Smith and his former Oregon State coaches will look to start the Spartans' rebuild with a bang in the spring game.

All signs point upward. The coaches and players have said that spring practice has been going well, and although some things need to be ironed out, as would be the case for any team, things are looking good. Saturday will be its chance to prove it.

Auburn transfer wide receiver Ja’Varrius Johnson has scheduled visits to Arizona and Michigan State, @agent__OG tells @On3sports . The former four-star took a visit to UCF last week. Police identify 7 suspects in alleged anti-LGBTQ assault on two Michigan State students

Police announced Tuesday that they identified seven suspects in connection to an alleged assault on two college students that took place at their school’s main library the day before.

Michigan State University police said in a statement that the suspects targeted the two victims on Monday potentially for bias against the victims’ sexual orientation. They added that none of the suspects were affiliated with the university and that they will be requesting prosecutors to press charges once an investigation is complete.

“It is important to recognize that crimes are never the fault of a victim,” the statement reads. “Anyone who believes they have been discriminated against or harassed is encouraged to report the incident(s) to the MSU Office of Institutional Equity.”

Doug Monette, MSU’s interim vice president and chief safety officer, and Vennie Gore, the senior vice president for the school’s student life and engagement department, addressed students and faculty in a separate statement on Tuesday.

Monette and Gore noted that the incident occurred during the university’s LGBTQ Pride Month, “underscoring its significance.” The pair added that the alleged altercation was based on the students’ “racial identities” in addition to their sexualities.

“Discrimination or harassment, including hate crimes, based on protected identities can have a significant impact,” they said. “We want everyone to know that they deserve to feel safe and respected.”

Neither the university nor MSU Police immediately responded to requests for further comment.

If only anti-LGBTQ bias were at play, Michigan’s Attorney General Dana Nessel noted, it is not possible for prosecutors to charge the suspects with a hate crime. Existing Michigan state law does not prohibit intimidation, harassment, threats or harm based on an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

“It’s not an included class, under the Ethnic Intimidation Act,” she said, addressing reporters at an unrelated news conference on Tuesday. It would be, under the proposed laws in both the House and the Senate. I have encouraged the Legislature to move forward on that, and this might be an example of why it’s so important to do so.”

Best available: Top 10 players to watch so far this spring

The 2023-24 transfer portal cycle is on pace to be another record-setting one, with 2,100 scholarship college football players already in the portal at the FBS level. So far, nearly 1,400 have announced commitments as we enter the 14-day spring transfer window from April 16-30.

Which big names do you need to know ahead of the portal deadline? In an effort to help you keep track of who’s going where and which top transfers are still on the market, The Athletic ranks the best available players in the portal.

Transfers are ranked based on their experience, production, potential, interest they’re generating and feedback from coaches throughout the country. This is a fluid list that we’ll constantly update as players make decisions, so be sure to keep this one bookmarked.

LSU LB Jaxon Howard commits to Minnesota

Minnesota has picked up a big commitment out of the portal from LSU transfer outside linebacker Jaxon Howard. The 6-foot-4, 241-pound edge was the No. 1 ranked recruit in the state of Minnesota in the 2023 class and appeared in five games during his freshman season with the Tigers. Now the former four-star is coming home with four seasons of remaining eligibility. Good win for P.J. Fleck and his coaching staff.

Transfer issues are nothing new to college football

The men talked a little too loosely on the train ride home. They were in a Pullman car, going from Atlanta to Washington on Saturday night into Sunday morning, and with their job done, they figured they could talk freely. And so they talked … very freely.

The day before, Nov. 2, 1907, the Georgia football team lost 10-6 to Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Now on the train up north were three men who had played in that game who decidedly were not enrolled at either of the schools. Four days later, one of their fellow passengers, F.L. Ingram, fired off a letter to Georgia — and several newspapers — about what he heard:

“Two of them had been players on the Georgetown team, and were living in or near Washington, D.C., and the third, with whom I traveled as far as Winston-Salem, N.C., stated that two of the party were not connected in any way with the University at Athens, but were paid $150.00 cash, and their traveling expenses to come to Atlanta to play with Georgia in Saturday afternoon’s game.”

Jaden Rashada leaving Arizona State

Jaden Rashada leaving Arizona State

Arizona State quarterback Jaden Rashada has announced he's entering the transfer portal. Rashada, a top-100 recruit and the No. 7 ranked QB recruit in the class of 2023, played in three games and made two starts during his freshman season with the Sun Devils.

Rashada initially signed with Florida and agreed to a $13.85 million contract with a Gators collective but asked to be released from his letter of intent after the collective failed to make a payment and terminated the agreement.

Arizona State landed Michigan State transfer Sam Leavitt in the offseason and also has Trenton Bourguet returning.

Georgia is expected to be the frontrunner in this recruitment, a source told The Athletic , as the Bulldogs are seeking a backup to provide depth this year and compete with Gunner Stockton next year.

Cormani McClain officially in portal

Colorado CB Cormani McClain has now officially entered the transfer portal. The five-star signee becomes the 15th Colorado scholarship player to hit the portal this week and that's 27 since the end of the season. USF and USC are among the schools already in the mix.

How does loyalty work in CFB now?

In an expected move on Wednesday, the NCAA Division I Council approved a change to transfer rules , which will grant immediate eligibility to all transfers as long as they meet academic eligibility requirements. So long are the days of sitting out a year and submitting eligibility waivers. Say “hello” to unlimited transfers.

The rule opens the floodgates for athletes to transfer more than once in their careers. This week, I dove into the topic of multi-time transfers and aimed to answer one question from the athletes who have gone through it: Who do they root for as alumni?

The overwhelming majority of players I spoke with said time spent at a school and/or where they got their degree were the most influential factors in their loyalty post-college. But still, a split feeling is present.

Said Alan Bowman (who transferred from Texas Tech to Michigan to Oklahoma State): “I don’t know how I’m going to raise my son. I really don’t know. The loyalty issue is a thing.”

What about all the excess gear? And friendships left behind? This was a fun one to report. Read it here.

What’s the latest on college football’s transfer portal? Which RBs are underrated for NFL Draft?

What’s the latest on college football’s transfer portal? Which RBs are underrated for NFL Draft?

Why Oregon State RB’s transfer is intriguing

Last week, reports surfaced that Martinez planned on entering the portal, which he made official on Tuesday. His loss is a big blow for the Beavers — Martinez was a first-team All-Pac-12 rusher and formerly pledged his commitment to the Beavers amid roster turnover following coach Jonathan Smith’s departure to Michigan State.

Amid the initial rumblings, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Martinez was set to make more than $400,000 in NIL deals to remain at Oregon State in 2024. Players are making money. We know this. But rarely do we see the actual dollar amount next to these deals.

Following the report, Martinez implied to the Oregonian that Oregon State’s collective, Dam Nation, did not live up to its promises. Kyle Bjornstad, co-founder of Dam Nation, said whatever commitments the collective made to Martinez were fulfilled, “1,000 percent.” A few days later Martinez told John Canzano that he “had no problem with Kyle or the collective” and insisted his decision didn’t have to do with NIL.

The story is a big mess and sends yet another bat signal about the transparency needed in NIL negotiations. It’ll be interesting to follow the narrative of where Martinez ends up. He has visits planned to Miami, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Arizona during the next two weeks.

Entries by the numbers, best available

Remember when we thought this window might be a little tamer since teams are still in the middle of spring practice? So much for that. Let’s take a look at what we’ve seen from this window so far — numbers are courtesy of The Athletic’s portal guru, Max Olson. Read his full breakdown of movement here.

  • By 10:30 a.m. (ET) on Tuesday, 90 scholarship players had entered the portal. The significance? On the opening date of the spring window last year, 90 players entered in total.
  • The first-day total: 221 FBS scholarship players entered the portal. That breaks down to 105 Power 4 transfers and 116 from the Group of 5.
  • More than 20 percent of the first-day entries were repeat transfers. (More on this group later.)
  • Colorado had nine players enter on Tuesday, including six who had transferred in for Year 1 under Deion Sanders. 👀
  • The total number of FBS scholarship transfers in this cycle (which began Aug. 1, 2023) has surpassed 2,100. That’s a 25 percent increase from last year’s total at this time.

So, who entered? Max ranked the best available transfers and will update the list as the news continues. A few early names to watch include Arizona CB Tacario Davis (No. 2), Texas A&M safety Jacoby Mathews (No. 3) and Penn State WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith (No. 4). Ranked No. 1 is Oregon State RB Damien Martinez, whose transfer is particularly interesting.

Busy start for Big Ten

Busy start for Big Ten

(Photo: Sean M. Haffey / Getty Images)

By my count, there are 35 players from the Big Ten whose names have become transfer portal entries since Monday morning. Illinois and Indiana both have five entries while Michigan State has four. It's no surprise with the Hoosiers and Spartans, both of whom have new coaches and had the Big Ten's highest entries after the first portal opening (Michigan State with 31, Indiana with 30). Illinois had low attrition in the last window with only nine departures.

The league's highest-profile exits start with tackle Kadyn Proctor, who started every game at Alabama last year, transferred to Iowa in January, then left the Iowa program the day before spring practice. Perhaps the most surprising exit is Penn State receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith, who led the Nittany Lions last year with 53 catches for 673 yards and four touchdowns.

With a few teams wrapping up spring practice this week, there likely will be some departures Monday. The Ohio State backup quarterback situation also bears watching. So far, none at that position have entered the portal this spring.

Simeon Barrow in portal as grad transfer

Michigan State DT Simeon Barrow Jr. has entered the portal as a graduate transfer. The 30-game starter has twice earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors for the Spartans and has recorded 110 tackles, 18.5 TFLs, 10.5 sacks and two blocked field goals in his career. Barrow briefly went in the portal last October after Mel Tucker's firing but withdrew and stayed through the spring.

Does the 85-scholarship limit still matter?

At almost any college football program, Cam Goode would have been among the 85 players receiving a full-ride scholarship.

Goode played at Michigan, which had one of the deepest rosters of any team since the 85-man scholarship limit took effect in the Football Bowl Subdivision in 1994. Before the 2023 season, Goode was asked to give up his scholarship to make room for another player. Instead of transferring to a school that could offer him a scholarship, Goode chose to stay at Michigan and pay for his tuition through name, image and likeness deals.

“I was totally open to it,” said Goode, a defensive tackle hoping to hear his name called in the upcoming NFL Draft. “I’m not a selfish person at all — if anything, selfless. It was all for the better. I knew they were going to take care of me. I’m a good player, they love me, I’ve got a great personality. I knew they’d take care of me, for sure.”

Colorado RB Alton McCaskill IV back in portal

Colorado running back Alton McCaskill IV has announced he's planning to re-enter the transfer portal. The Houston transfer was one of the more coveted playmakers in last year's spring portal and was the AAC's Rookie of the Year in 2021. But McCaskill was still recovering from a torn ACL that forced him to miss the 2022 season and couldn't make much of an impact for the Buffs in 2023, rushing for 59 yards on 14 carries in four games and taking a redshirt. Once he and Cormani McClain are officially in the transfer portal, that makes 26 CU scholarship players exiting the program since the end of the season.

Louisville RB Peny Boone returns to portal

Louisville running back Peny Boone has re-entered the transfer portal. Boone was the 2023 MAC Offensive Player of the Year at Toledo last season after leading the conference with 1,400 rushing yards on 7.2 yards per carry and scoring 16 total touchdowns. He's now back on the market after spending the spring with the Cardinals, who made a big splash with their portal haul in the winter transfer window.

Chamon Metayer back in the portal

(Kareem Elgazzar / USA Today)

Colorado TE Chamon Metayer has re-entered the transfer portal. The Cincinnati transfer had joined the team in January and was considered one of the top tight ends in the December portal cycle. The Buffs have had 11 scholarship players hit the portal so far this week, including seven players who'd joined the program via the portal.

Austin Meek

Michigan’s Cristian Dixon enters portal

Michigan’s Cristian Dixon is in the transfer portal. He was a four-star wide receiver and a top-250 prospect out of California in the Class of 2021. He was listed as a wide receiver but said he was working at defensive back, too. Even with Michigan’s needs at wide receiver, he didn’t have a clear path for playing time.

Damonic Williams to leave TCU

TCU defensive tackle Damonic Williams plans to enter the transfer portal, sources confirmed to The Athletic . Williams has started all 27 career games at nose tackle for the Horned Frogs and was a Freshman All-American in 2022. He'll become one of the top players available in the portal when he's officially in. 247Sports first reported his plans to transfer.

With spring football over, Ohio State is now on to the next part of the college football offseason: the spring transfer portal. The two-week window for all undergraduates opened on Tuesday, and there will be plenty of movement around the country.

Ohio State made major moves in the winter window, adding safety Caleb Downs, quarterback Will Howard, running back Quinshon Judkins and center Seth McLaughlin. The spring window might not include the same amount of fireworks in Columbus, but some departures and some additions can be expected before the window closes on April 30.

RB market, Colorado exits and more from busy Day 1

The inaugural NCAA transfer portal spring window opened for college football players on April 15 last year. On that date, only 90 FBS scholarship players put their names in the portal. Those were simpler times.

On Tuesday, the spring transfer window opened and 90 scholarship players were already in the portal by 10:30 a.m. ET. By the end of the day, more than 200 had entered the portal to kick off this 14-day period for underclassman transfers. Here’s what we learned from Day 1.

The portal is here to stay, so here’s how you can embrace it

Back in the old days of college football — you know, 24 long months ago when we still recognized this sport — fans had a stronger connection to the players on their favorite team’s roster.

In those ancient times, fans would follow recruiting, live and die by a high schooler’s decision, then watch the prospect sign a national letter of intent. If that player chose your favorite school, they embarked on a journey that mirrored yours — the same campus, classrooms, local restaurants, bars, all of it. Athletes might live very different lifestyles than we did in college, but we can picture them loving our school in the same way. That’s what connects us to them. That’s one reason we love college sports.

The spring transfer portal window opened Tuesday, with more than 200 players submitting their names. That was more than double the number from the first day of last year’s spring window. By the end of the week, last year’s numbers will be shattered.
