I think the price is a bit off, given that it doesn’t really do anything that’s not already built into most DAWs. Am I missing something?

This should be free.

I’ve been doing this for years with the korg collection and the moog v. Not a damn thing new here except the price. Don’t be be fooled by all this ” new” stuff guys. A lot of it is older than I am.

If you’ve got 3k in a synth, how can you not get this?

Yup, that’s what Moog thought. It’s called greed. Zero respect for consumer. Just greed. Money.

This is too crazy. I also had to buy the librarian software for the same amount. Get your service up to standard Moog…

There was something understated about Bob, I wrote to him once and received a nice reply. The situation now is rather different. It is good to see people seeing what a joke they are really.Extortionate prices. It is rumoured that anyone who goes near their offices is charged for breathing ‘their’ air. The idea software can sound raw and real to any hardware synth is not quite true.Is it a moog? It has the moog name and wow how quick that is begining to loose it’s credibility.

“The idea software can sound raw and real to any hardware synth is not quite true.Is it a moog? It has the moog name and wow how quick that is begining to loose it’s credibility.”

It sounds like you think this is a VSTi and that you don’t think it can sound like hardware. Credibility ‘loosed’.

“The idea software can sound raw and real to any hardware synth is not quite true.”

Reading comprehension /facepalm

The softsynths sound pretty shit in comparison to hardware ( I am not English excuse grammar) That’s why hardware is still in demand. Is that rocket science?

Wow, you still don’t get it. THIS IS AN EDITOR FOR THE HARDWARE SYNTH.

Any idea if this would work for Voyager RME? Should right?

I have been doing a lot of research over the years with a lot of testing of software emulations of hardware and real hardware synth like the moog voyager analogue synth. Its a fact that hardware sounds better than emulations of synths its true and to physically use a synth is completely diferant experience yes hardware is much better . I spoke to a director of moog and asked why real hardware synths like the moog voyager are so expensive he said that parts and the cost to build them has risen a lot. Its a very hard time for musicians and bedroom producers to own physical hardware but then it always has. You can achieve a lot with plugs just look at the waves or Sony or ssl just to name a few they all are fantastic plugs. At the end of the day having a vst to control your moog is xclnt but it should be free to moog owners that would def put the icing on the cake.

Well, is the prices only high for Moog then? All the others are quite a bit cheaper.

While I agree I’d like to have this for free software development is not a cheap venture. Reading about this software from the manual it was created(developed) by a 3rd party company. I’m assuming Moog has some licensing revenue to pay the company for it. While I can buy a computer off the shelf I still have to buy an OS from MS and pay a license to them or run a free version of an OS like Linux. It’s the same thing.

6 of the best VST/AU Minimoog emulation plugins

Half a dozen great ways to put the sound of the classic synth in your DAW

moog voyager plugin

Mini beasts

Launched in 1971, Moog Inc’s Minimoog kickstarted a revolution in music technology that saw the synthesizer shrunk down from a room-filling modular science project to an accessible, portable and, most importantly, playable instrument aimed at musicians rather than physicists.

By today’s standards, on paper, the Mini looks like nothing to get excited about, being monophonic and lacking in most of the features we now take for granted in any analogue synth - real or virtual. Nonetheless, its powerful, rich sound has more than stood the test of time, keeping second-hand prices sky high, and inspiring several developers to build software revivals of it.

Here are six of the best Minimoog emulations on the market, starting with Monark, a state-of-the-art reboot from Native Instruments. For a complete guide to Monark, check out Computer Music 218 (July 2015) , which is on sale now.

Native Instruments Monark

Native Instruments Monark

Perhaps the king of all Minimoog emulations, Native Instruments’ Monark is an Ensemble for Reaktor and Reaktor Player - deployable as a plugin or standalone - that painstakingly models every quirk and nuance of the real thing.

It has an amazingly realistic retro sound and has been put together with meticulous attention to detail (including oscillator drift and wonky keytracking) resulting in an incredibly convincing sound.

The developers were so focused on authenticity that Monark makes few concessions to modern standards - there’s no polyphony, no pulse width modulation, no dedicated LFOs and certainly no effects, for example.

You do at least get a few extra filter modes and the ability to shift the global tuning up and down, but the point is that Monark not only captures the sound of the original synth, but also its workflow, feel and - yes – limitations.

In short, it’s the next best thing to owning an actual Minimoog.

GForce Software Minimonsta

GForce Software Minimonsta

Minimonsta boasts not only polyphony but also additional LFOs and envelopes, the Melohman patch morphing system, a delay effect and external input for use as an effect.

It sounds terrific, too, serving up a solid reimagining of the Minimoog Model D and including over 6000 presets.

IK Multimedia SampleMoog

IK Multimedia SampleMoog

For a quality sample-based take on the seminal monosynth, IK Multimedia’s SampleMoog uses its SampleTank engine to power no less than 16 virtual Moog instruments, including the Mini.

With its simple control set and 32-strong roster of effects, it’s a very different beast indeed to Monark, but at this price, it’s a strong contender for those in need of mix-ready sounds.

Arturia Mini V2

Arturia Mini V2

Perhaps the best known of all the Minimoog emulations is Arturia’s popular Mini V2. Like Minimonsta, this one extends the capabilities of the real thing significantly, adding polyphony, a mod matrix, a formant filter, an arpeggiator, effects, its own parameter automation system and more.

It’s a brilliant soft synth, particularly when partnered with it’s mobile iPad couterpart, iMini , from and to which it can import and export patches.

u-he Diva

Counting every part of the Minimoog among its various modelled modules, u-he’s semi-modular masterpiece Diva is in a rather higher price bracket than the others here, but being arguably the finest virtual analogue synth ever made, you’d expect it to be.

Steinberg's Model•E

Steinberg's Model•E

Last and unashamedly least, we’d be remiss were we not to mention Steinberg’s Model•E - one of the first VST instruments ever made, way back in 2000.

Obviously, it’s not the most powerful or convincing of faux Minimoogs, but given that you can download it for free as part of theVST Classics collection from Steinberg, there’s no reason not to give it a try.

Read more about each instrument below and scroll to the bottom of the page to see the Honorable Mentions.

PG-8X by Martin Lüders

PG-8X emulates Roland’s legendary JX-8P analog synthesizer. The original JX-8P sounded huge, but it lacked in the hands-on control department. Users had to dive through menus to program new sounds.

That’s why Roland released the PG-800 controller. It was an external hardware device that made programming the Roland JX-8P and Super JX synthesizers a far more user-friendly affair.

The free PG-8X synthesizer by Martin Lüders gives the best of both worlds. You’re getting a detailed emulation of JX-8P’s analog synthesis engine and the control layout borrowed from the PG-800 controller.

PG-8X truly shines as a synthwave instrument. It’s one of those rare virtual instruments that sound analog-like almost effortlessly.

Create eye-watering lush pads and earth-shattering analog basslines in the blink of an eye. Turn on the Unison mode for instant fat leads. Also, the included chorus module applies an immediate retro-boost to any sound.

More info: PG-8X

OB-Xd 2.0 by discoDSP

OB-Xd takes inspiration from the Oberheim OB-X analog synthesizer. The original was the analog weapon of choice for brass sounds, pads, and punchy bass.

Thankfully, this freeware plugin from discoDSP nails that classic Oberheim sound. It also comes with an extensive collection of presets that serve as an instant source of legendary analog sounds.

Even better, OB-Xd is easy to program thanks to its user-friendly interface. Beginners and sound design experts alike shouldn’t have any issues with building custom synth patches from scratch.

2Dat originally developed the OB-Xd. He later provided the source code to discoDSP, who are now handling the development and support.

You can use OB-Xd for free. The developers are accepting an optional $49 donation from users who want to support their work.

More info: OB-Xd

Mono/Fury by Full Bucket Music

Full Bucket Music’s website is a treasure trove of emulated analog synthesizers. Even better, all of their vintage-inspired virtual instruments are free. We had a hard time selecting just two Full Bucket Music plugins for this article.

That said, be sure to check out everything else this talented developer has to offer. And be sure to support their work with a donation if possible.

Our first Full Bucket Music pick is the Mono/Fury plugin, which models the Mono/Poly analog synthesizer by Korg. Mono/Fury emulates all the original instrument’s quirks and peculiarities, including the unique polyphony mode. Each voice triggers a different oscillator, resulting in some complex multi-layered timbres when playing chords and melodies.

At the same time, Mono/Fury comes will all the handy features of a modern-day audio plugin. It has a preset manager, supports MIDI learn and automation, and features a state-of-the-art zero-delay feedback low-pass filter with self-oscillation.

Mono/Fury operates as a VST and Audio Unit plugin in all compatible digital audio workstations on PC and Mac.

More info: Mono/Fury

Fury-800 by Full Bucket Music

Ah, another Full Bucket Music plugin and another Fury. This one is a personal favorite of mine as it models the Korg Poly-800, a cheap analog hybrid synthesizer that I owned back in the day. It featured digitally controlled oscillators and a terrible (in a charming way) analog filter.

The original Poly-800 is the exact opposite of what you’d expect from an analog synthesizer. It sounds lo-fi, thin, and plasticky. But sometimes, that is precisely the type of sound you need for an 80s-inspired music track.

The killer feature here is Poly-800’s chorus module. It’s super noisy, and the pitch goes all over the place. If Korg manufactured the Poly-800 in 2020, I think they would label the effect as “VHS mode” instead of a chorus.

Anyway, the Fury-800 takes all of these charming Poly-800 features and packs them in a convenient virtual instrument for PC and Mac. By all means, the Fury-800 plugin is a must-have if you’re into synthwave production.

More info: Fury-800

TAL-U-No-62

TAL-U-No-62 by Togu Audio Line

TAL-U-No-62 is an old-school virtual instrument that emulates an old-school analog synthesizer. It is a virtual recreation of Roland’s legendary Juno-60 synth.

Togu Audio Line’s freeware Juno is more than a decade old. As a result, it doesn’t offer the latest and greatest DSP technology and analog emulation. However, TAL-U-No-62 is still a pretty solid virtual analog instrument that undeniably captures that classic Juno-60 vibe.

TAL-U-No-62’s oscillators and the low-pass filter won’t blow you away. But, the chorus module is where this virtual Juno-60 keeps its secret sauce. Turn on the chorus effect, and TAL-U-No-62 instantly sounds much closer to the original hardware.

Even better, you can download that same chorus as a standalone effect from Togu Audio Line’s website. Use the free TAL-Chorus-LX in combination with any virtual instrument for that lush 80s sound.

It’s also worth noting that the same developer offers a more advanced (but still fairy priced at €51) version of this instrument. The paid version is called TAL-U-NO-LX, and it’s the best Juno-60 emulation on the market.

More info: TAL-U-No-62

Tyrell N6 by U-He

Tyrell N6 by U-He is loosely based on the Juno-60. We originally included it in the “Honorable Mentions” section of this article because Tyrell N6 isn’t a 1:1 recreation of any analog synthesizer. However, we decide to move it to the Top 10 list, following our readers’ suggestion (thanks, BenJ!).

You can think of Tyrell N6 as an 80s analog synth on steroids. All the usual components are there, including a couple of analog oscillators, a multi-mode filter, and a lush Juno-like chorus. You also get several valuable extras like a modulation matrix, ring modulation, feedback, and more.

A dream to program, thanks to its intuitive interface, Tyrell N6 comes with dozens of freely downloadable third-party sound banks. Some of these were created by professional sound designers, so there’s an easy way to add quality synth sounds to your arsenal.

Coming from the developers of industry-leading virtual analog synthesizers like Diva and Ace, the freeware Tyrell N6 is an absolute must-have in any analog synth aficionado’s plugin collection.

More info: Tyrell N6

Dexed by Digital Suburban

Dexed is a virtual recreation of the Yamaha DX7 and the only FM synth on this list. The plugin emulates the original DX7 so well that it supports its SysEx messages. As a result, Dexed can work as a patch editor for the hardware DX7.

Now, the unfortunate thing about FM synthesizers is that they’re hard to program. But, the good news is that there are thousands of Yamaha DX7 patches available online. And yes, you can load them in Dexed.

Use Dexed for 80s electric piano sounds, pads, FM bells, and let’s not forget the Lately Bass patch.

More info: Dexed

Exakt Lite by Sonicbits

Exakt Lite is based on another classic FM synthesizer from Yamaha. The freeware VST plugin by Sonicbits emulates the Yamaha TX81Z module, which was practically the DX-11 synthesizer without the keyboard.

The TX81Z was a source of many iconic FM sounds, including the legendary ‘Lately Bass’ patch. Unsurprisingly, Exakt Lite emulates this punchy bass sound quite well, and you can find it among the default presets.

The best thing about Exakt Lite, though, is that it’s relatively easy to program. FM synths are notorious for being a hard nut to crack, especially for beginners. Exakt Lite remedies this with a simplified user interface that borrows some of its layout characteristics and features from subtractive synths.

Whether you’re looking for classic FM synth sounds or your goal is to learn more about FM synthesis, Exakt Lite by Sonicbits is well worth the download.

Thanks to BPB reader Sebastian for suggesting Exakt Lite.

More info: Exakt Lite

VK-1 Viking Synthesizer

VK-1 Viking Synthesizer

VK-1 Viking Synthesizer emulates the Moog Voyager analog monosynth. Now, the Moog Voyager isn’t exactly retro, but it dates back to 2002. And Moog discontinued the Voyager in 2015 with over 14,000 units sold.

The Voyager combined a pair of Moog’s signature ladder filters with three continuously variable wave oscillators, putting a modern twist on the classic Moog sound.

The free VK-1 Viking Synthesizer from Blamsoft is a rather precise emulation of the Voyager.

VK-1 Viking Synthesizer uses zero-delay feedback filters and advanced techniques for avoiding oscillator aliasing. Also, the developers matched the oscillators and envelopes to their hardware counterparts through precise and extensive measurements.

More info: VK-1 Viking Synthesizer

Synth1 by Ichiro Toda.

Ichiro Toda’s legendary Synth1 is one of the oldest freeware synthesizers around. Released almost two decades ago (on October 9th, 2002), there’s no denying that Synth1 is a vintage plugin. But it aged incredibly well.

Despite it being a retro plugin, Synth1 emulates the Nord Lead 2 very well. And its deceptively simple-looking user interface offers a surprising amount of synthesis firepower.

Even ten years ago, users praised Synth1 for its low CPU usage. Can you imagine how well it works on modern multi-core processors? You can use dozens of Synth1 instances in a project without hurting your computer’s performance.

However, Synth1’s most significant advantage is the incredible amount of available presets. There are hundreds of Synth1 soundbanks out there, making it the perfect choice for users who don’t like programming sounds from scratch.

More info: Synth1

Nils K1v by Nils Schneider

Nils K1v faithfully emulates the Kawai K1 digital synthesizer. It includes K1’s original factory bank and all ROM card expansions, and all this adds up to 768 presets.

The user interface mimics the original Kawai K1 module, with additional on-screen controls for parameters like envelopes and filters. This combination works quite well in the plugin format. Accessing the presets is easy, and tweaking the Kawai K1 sounds in real-time is fun.

The coolest feature in Nils K1v is the ability to morph the preset using the XY controller. It’s a fun way to add movement to pads and huge atmospheric sounds that the Kawai K1 was known for.

More info: Nils K1v

Surrealistic MG-1 Plus Synthesizer

Surrealistic MG-1 Plus Synthesizer by Cherry Audio

Surrealistic MG-1 Plus Synthesizer emulates the Realistic Concertmate MG-1, an analog synthesizer designed by Moog and sold by Radio Shack in the early 1980s.

Designed by none other than Moog, the MG-1 synthesizer was not a toy, despite its low price and basic design. Back in the day, it was the cheapest ticket to proper Moog-style bass sounds.

The freeware emulation comes from Cherry Audio, the company behind the popular Voltage Modular virtual instrument. Thanks to its simple design and synthesis engine, Surrealistic MG-1 Plus Synthesizer works great both as a monosynth and a synthesis learning tool.

Oh wow Kawai K1 is great, never heard about this emulation, thanks!

It’s fantastic, definitely give it a try!

I can imagine how hard it was not to include more than two Full Bucket plugins. Otherwise I expected one FB-3xxx on that list. Interesting why Tyrell No6 didn’t make it unless it’s rated fairly high in free synth lists in any category but not in this more specific one. Anyway, great basis for further synth fun.

That Bucket is filling up nicely over the years… ;D (I want a FurySix!) Good list, indeed. In the honorable mentions, I would add the whole Kevin Brown SynthMaker/Flowstone effort, especially since he finally upgraded some to 64bit.

Cheeze Machine, which resembles ARP Solina to my knowledge. Great article.

moog voyager plugin

There was this guy who compiled almost all of the synth1 presets available out there and posted it on his blog. The compiled file was around 11 mb, i think. This made synth1 to load iniatially a bit slow as it would scan for all those plugins whenever a new instance of the plugin is loaded or a project is launched. So i wont recommend downloading all the presets available there but to choose them wisely.

Tyrell N6 is based on the Juno 60 (read history https://u-he.com/products/tyrelln6/ ) and should definitively be in the top 10 … better sound than the free TAL-U-No-62 or some other in the list It’s the perfect free synth for synthwave along with Ob-xd and HY-mono !

That’s a very good suggestion! Added to the main list instead of TAL-BassLine.

How about adding some arpeggiators (I like your article about this) and vintage reverbs (melda have a great one)? I also use izotopes vinyl on the master for extra vintage artifacts (like tape speed variation)

Good suggestions! I think I covered all the best reverbs in the free reverbs article – but it would be fun to write one that focuses on vintage reverbs. Added to my to-do list. Btw, here’s one to check out if you’re into vintage reverbs: https://bedroomproducersblog.com/2020/04/14/jp-me-1-reverb/

Charlatan, Mausynth, TAL Noisemaker, Xhip should definitely be on the list, they’re all top free synths. =)

I don’t think those qualify as retro synths, though. Charlatan does, kinda, but it’s not based on a particular instrument. That said, both Charlatan and MauSynth are included in our main free synth page: https://bedroomproducersblog.com/2019/10/31/free-synthesizer-vst-plugins/

I don’t know, if it’s already retro, but Exakt Lite of Sonicbits is an insane free synth: https://www.sonicbits.com/exakt-lite.html

That’s a solid suggestion! Adding Exakt Lite to the list, right next to Dexed. Thanks for the tip!

Surge Synth is the best free plugin for every platforms.

It’s incredibly good, but I’d say it shares the number one spot with Vital. That said, this article is about retro synthesizers. We have another one for modern synths: https://bedroomproducersblog.com/2019/10/31/free-synthesizer-vst-plugins/

So unfortunately the DiscoDSP OBXD isn’t free technically. They limit you by only granting Non-commercial rights to use the plugin, meaning you can’t release music for monetary gain with it unless you pay the $49 price tag. So technically it’s $49 if you don’t want to release songs for free. The same goes for their “Highlife” Sampler.

I would like to mention U-He’s Repro-1 Alpha that was released some years ago, it still works, although it is no longer being updated, it is still free and will be free forever according to the post. https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=460687

The PlugSE VST dll file should be placed in the VST plugins folder. Depending on the VST host that folder could be located in various places on you hard drive. In case of Steinberg’s Cubase this folder is located in the Cubase directory and it is called “Vstplugins”. In Ableton Live the Vst folder can be selected and defined in Preferences.

The PlugSE is designed to serve as a bridge between the host and the Voyager and in principle the Voyager should be connected directly to the PlugSE via MIDI. By default, most of the VST hosts are set to grab all MIDI ports on startup and this may create a connection problem for PlugSE users.

Many MIDI interfaces are not multi- client - this means that ports can be opened and used only by one application at a time. It also means that in practice, after you start the host application the host may first access and open MIDI ports that your Voyager is connected to and prevent the PlugSE from accessing the same ports later on.

Even if your MIDI interface is multi- client and it is connected to the Voyager it is still advisable to deactivate MIDI ports the Voyager is using in the host MIDI setup in order to avoid double MIDI messages being send or received. The PlugSE will handle all MIDI messaging and the connection between the Voyager MIDI and the host is not needed.

Top 20 Moog Synth Emulation Plugins | integraudio.com

Let’s learn more about the top 20 Moog emulation VST plugins available in 2024.

It’s hard to imagine today’s music scenario without the power of synthesizers . These exquisite instruments have earned their place among the most iconic pieces of studio gear mainly due to their amazing versatility in delivering new sounds.

One brand that is a household name in this segment is Moog Music . Bob Moog founded the company in 1953, but only in the late 1960s and early 1970s we started to see the release of some now iconic models , like the Model D . Over the years, their hardware became more legendary than ever , featured in multiple hit songs and experimental music.

This list aims to collect the best virtual instrument plugins that emulate Moog products , in detail or not. So let’s dive into our list of the top 20 Moog emulation VST plugins available in 2024.

Top 20 Moog Emulation VST Plugins 2024 That We Found

Uad moog minimoog (now on windows).

More Info & Price (Trial Available)

moog voyager plugin

UAD launched their virtual version of the legendary Minimoog synth with UAD Spark in collaboration with Moog Music.

The plugin has been created with plenty of research to emulate the classic circuitry and rigorous modeling to precisely capture the module-to-module coupling and impedance, to re-create the authentic analog sound of the original Minimoog as a soft-synth .

It has three oscillators, each with six different basic analog waveforms to choose from , along with a volume knob in the mixer window . Overall, the interface and the signal flow, like the hardware, are simple and easy to use .

Key Features:

  • Analog filters

The plugin allows you to set the cutoff frequency, filter emphasis (resonance), and contour amount (mix) of the filter, and the filter sound warm, vintage, and analog. It’s modeled from a VCF (Voltage Controlled Filter) and the filter response has been programmed accordingly.

  • Software additions

UAD has added flexible velocity sensitivity and additional modulation features like a separate LFO, modulation amount, and modulation mix sources . These features are not present in the hardware version.

  • Expansive Presets

The presets are classified and organized in terms of Genre, Type, and Description , and there is a huge variety of presets you can choose from, which fit a lot of different genres and styles. That makes the sound selection process easier, especially for composers and new music producers.

Compatibility:

The plugin requires a macOS 10.15 Catalina, 11 Big Sur, or 12 Monterey, and is available with the UAD Spark in AAX, AU, VST3, and LUNA plugin formats.  Now, also available on Windows 10 or more.

Overall, UAD Minimoog sounds close to the original hardware synthesizer and is a great emulation. The harmonic content you get from the External Input Volume can increase the quality of the audio and add the required punch, warmness, and spark to the sound .

It’s a great plugin for creating vintage, analog-sounding retro synth-pop music and even EDM and modern pop .

Softube Model 72 Synthesizer

More Info & Price (Trial Available) Or Buy Here (Support Integraudio)

Top 20 Moog Synth Emulation VST Plugins | integraudio.com

The nicest retro sounds may be obtained by using an analog device.

The finest synthesizer sounds were frequently performed through antique machines , sometimes with hundreds of patch connections or knobs. However, the components inside its structure ensured that these sounds were as unique and original as possible, an important feature of their distinct tone.

Softube took the initiative to recreate the essence of a real 1972 hardware in good shape , capturing and translating every aspect into this virtual instrument.

  • Designed and built with passion

Softube has extensive expertise in simulating music gear and has collaborated with hundreds of audio businesses, such as Solid State Logic, Tube-Tech, and Weiss Engineering . Model 72 does the same thing by meticulously reproducing every synth module to deliver the most realistic feel possible from every small adjustment in any knob or parameter.

  • Expansion panel

One of the nicest aspects of a virtual instrument is the new features that may come with it . The “Expansion” tab , for example, allows you to freely adjust individual parameters such as “Doublin” and “Spread.”

These two new knobs enable you to have the identical notes you played doubled by another synth and to adjust how much this doubling is spread out in the stereo image.

Tone generator

The tone generator is the basic core of the synth, where all sounds are created to be subsequently adjusted. You’ll see three oscillators here, two with almost similar output waveforms and a third dedicated to working as an independent modulation oscillator with a greater tuning range and slightly varied waveforms, providing modest variation when making new ones.

All of the magic takes place here. This part has a “Master Tune” knob that controls the overall tuning of the Model 72 , the “Note Glide” pace , and the modulation mix.

As an alternative modulation source, a dedicated LFO can be employed. The modulation wheel acts as an attenuator , fine-tuning the amount of modulation spread, and may also be routed to an oscillator pitch or a specified filter cutoff frequency.

  • Amp Room module

The “Amp Room” module is responsible for creating the optimum instrument sound . This thick-sounding filter with “Envelop” Follower,” “Cutoff,” “Drive,” and “Resonance” controls can make your guitar, bass, or keyboard sound as funky as ever.

“Fast” and “Smooth” are the two settings of the “Envelope Follower.” In addition, a  dedicated “Mix” knob can assist in balancing the effects and their resulting mixed sound.

  • The modules

Model 72’s par72’s re separated into “Tone Generator,” “Amplifier,” “Filter,” “Envelope,” “Noise,” and Glide,” “Doublin,” and “Preamp.” All segments are created in the same manner as an actual unit , with identical signal flow.

Specific components, such as the “Amplifier” and “Preamp,” offer the true feel necessary to make it sound realistic, flawlessly mimicking each subtlety that makes the frequencies stand out.

The plugin is available for macOS 10.13 up to 12 (64-bit only) and Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit only). It comes in VST, VST 3, AAX, and AU plugin formats.

Softube’Softube’s2 is a great recreation of an instrument that influenced an entire generation of artists and producers, particularly funk music. With a synthesizer on your side, the possibilities are nearly limitless , and Softube did an excellent job of reproducing virtually old hardware like this synth.

There aren’t many difficult controls, only simple commands that deal with frequency modification like the previous units.

Native Instruments Monark (Requires Reaktor Player)

moog voyager plugin

Monark is a virtual analog subtractive synthesizer with a glide time knob and other features that enable you to create old-school G-Funk sounds.

At first look, its GUI is inspired by the Minimoog and has a basic and easy-to-tweak layout with fewer parameters. That makes your workflow easier, smoother, faster, and simpler. For example, there are three oscillators with six waveforms to choose from; that sound insane! Instead, they  sound huge, in-your-face, punchy, and bright .

The sound demo on its website will give you an idea of the quality and diversity of sounds, as you can easily create the pure West Coast and G-Funk beats or the modern derivative sounds used by the likes of Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, and more RnB & hip hop artists.

  • Sound Design features

The glide time knob with adjustable switches on MM Silver and Legato will allow the creation of the pitch drifts and slides commonly found in the genre . You can also create lush RnBish pad and chord sounds often used in Westcoast-style beats, using fine-tuning, modulation, and unison .

  • Well-modeled Oscillators

If you look into the signal flow in Reaktor or even listen to these oscillators, you’d be able to tell the detailing that went into creating them , as they sound big and beautiful. The sound quality is top-notch, and it sounds analog, which is very hard to achieve in virtual settings.

  • Expansive Panel B

The plugin has a window, other than the main window, called Panel B. That gives you insight and control into further detailing on the plugin , on which you can change the pitch bend curves, which is especially helpful in designing sounds for the concerning genre.

Monark is a Komplete Instrument and runs on Reaktor or Reaktor player , which further demands macOS 10.14, 10.15, or 11 (latest update), i5, 4 GB RAM, or Windows 10 (latest Service Pack), Intel Core i5 or equivalent CPU, 4 GB RAM , and is available as a standalone instrument, and in VST, AAX, or AU versions .

I was surprised to listen to the virtual synthesizer and its great sound. Getting the right G-funk/West Coast synth lead can take time to build, but the quality is the best you’ll get ; you  can use the presets and get some modern-sounding beats that are high-grade yet reminiscent of the old school . In addition, the interface is eye-pleasing and easy to follow , with responsive knobs that give you good hands-on control over your sounds.

Top 20 Moog Synth Emulation VST Plugins | integraudio.com

Diva, by u-he, offers limited controls, but it sounds similar to analog synths.

Overall, Diva is an easy plugin to navigate.  The plugin gives you five types of oscillators, four high-pass filters, five main filter options, and three types of envelopes . You’ll fYou’llOs, the effects, and the available controls in the lower panels, such as sync, pan, and tuning .

Additionally,  there are individual menus for modifications, trimmers, scope, and presets .

  • Oscillators

Each of the five types offers a slightly different GUI, which can be confusing. Other than that, they all sound incredible. For example, the plugin gives you three options in the Voltage Controlled Oscillation area . A CPU-hungry Triple VCO  with FM controls, a  multi-wave Dual VCO  with PWM, and a  CPU-friendly Dual VCO Eco  with ring modulation.

In addition, you get a DCO, a single oscillator  with a  flexible sub-OSC , and a  Digital oscillator , which  offers several types of waveforms.

The heart of Diva is its filters. U-he has modeled all five units after a more significant number of classic hardware, and though the controls are similar, each has its unique flavor. For instance, VCF | BITE adds beautiful resonance by increasing the oscillator volume by 10%.

  • Oscillator Voice Detune

Voltage oscillator synths detune slightly due to component wear, creating a natural effect like a soft chorus . To simulate this,  u-he went above and beyond and gave us the Oscillator Voice Detune panel .

You can access it by clicking the Trimmers section on the GUI. There are three knobs for Diva’s oscillations, and you can fine-tune them to find your sound. Additionally, you get a “Detune” knob below in the same panel, which controls the global detune . If you play it twice, the same note will sound highly different in high values.

The plugin gives you over 1200 presets, making life a lot easier, especially if you don’t have time to design your patches . Additionally,  it’s easier to search for the right presets through tags or text . You can look up categories, features, or the character of the desired sound.

Sound & Usability:

Like most analog gear, you lose some flexibility to gain character and personality . And even though this is a plugin, it makes every effort to get the best of the most famous hardware synths. As a result, this plugin’s sound is warm, round, and punchy from the get-go .

Additionally,  Diva’s functionality is unique. So that’s how u-he went for a genuinely analog look and feel for this plugin .

However,  the UI looks crowded , with small names for small knobs.  There are no fancy graphs or metering here , simply the parameters laid down as knobs and faders on a clean background. Controlling the envelopes with faders will be a new experience for those  only   used to digital synths .

This plugin is available for  macOS 10.7 or newer  and  Windows 7 or higher  in  VST, AU, and AAX  formats.

Built as an all-analog solution for your synth needs, u-he’s Diva gets you to grasp the sound of the original hardware for a thin slice of their prices . In addition, you can replace the modules and combine them to taste, unlike the originals, to remind you that you’re in the digital realm. Diva is a great-sounding plugin with a special place in your collection .

Arturia Modular V3

Arturia takes us back to the roots of synthesis with this emulation of a revered classic.

The Arturia Modular V is  based on the Moog Model 55 modular synth, a two-notes polyphonic synth. This software emulation  adds sensible features like formant filtering and 64-voice polyphony to the original design .

The interface, however, remains faithful to the hardware and the manual patching workflow.

Top 20 Moog Synth Emulation VST Plugins | integraudio.com

  • Powerful Oscillators

Sometimes, more is more in synthesis. For example, modular V features nine oscillators , and  each can generate sine, triangle, saw, and square waves . Furthermore, they also  feature frequency and amplitude modulations . While it may seem unnecessary to have so many oscillators, you’ll spend most of them for unison as there isn’t an instated feature for that. Also, there’s the signal generator.

  • Moog Filters

The plugin has three filter modules that accurately recreate the sound of the original filters (low-pass). The plugin lets you select one of four types of filters for each module : a low-pass, high-pass, notch, and a band-pass, all of them with 24 dB/octave slope steepness.

Furthermore, you’ll find a Fixed Filter Bank, where you can equalize the signal from the two output amplifiers (VCA )  using 14 bands .

  • Effect Processors

The plugin features chorus, phaser, and stereo delay  processors. There are  three chorus types selectable with a toggle switch. And you can sync the stereo delay   to the host tempo . You’ll probably want to use the delay as an echo rather than a spatial effect.

  • Sequence Generator

This module, better known as a sequencer, is comparable to the original model 960 sequencer but simplifies programming with internal connections. The module’s three components are the low-frequency oscillator, the 8-step sequence manager, and the output controller . The oscillator sets the playback rate, which can also be synced to the host.

The plugin is available for  Windows 7 or higher  and  macOS 10.11 or higher ,  both 64-bit only . It comes in  VST 2/3 ,  AU , and  AAX  formats.

Featuring  over 600 presets , Arturia’s V is probably one of the most inspiring synths  yet.

However, the interface often feels overly large and clunky, especially if you use a smaller screen like a laptop; although   it retains the original hardware’s aspect s ound-wise, the  emulation is spot-on , and if you like analog sounds, this synth should be at a high place on your list.

GForce Minimonsta

More Info & Price (Trial Available) The Mini you’re familiar with but on steroids.

The Minimoog is a staple in synthesizer sounds. Its iconic reputation is present in multiple genres and hit songs , proving that it’s a very special unit for many musicians and producers. However, GForce wanted to go beyond that and included some nice elements that considerably “improved” its usability and overall functions.

Top 20 Moog Synth Emulation VST Plugins | integraudio.com

  • XLFO & XADSR

Even though these names sound like out of this world, if you pay close attention, you’ll see that they refer to LFO and ADSR settings . The “X” added to the terminology refers to an added LFO and envelope configurations to any panel you’d want. A blue light on each knob will indicate if this is activated , and you can copy and paste it into other parameters.

The filter included in Minimonsta was modeled from an earlier version of a Minimoog, with all the characters and personalities retained – meaning it’s neither perfect nor should it be. However, this allows you to choose between a standard, more common sonority or something entirely new.

  • Patch memory segment

The Minimonsta contains over 500 patches called “Meta-patches.” These special, new patches are different because they comprise 12 relatable patches , making the final number of over 6,000 patches the most diversified way to nail premade tones.

Like the original instrument, Minimonsta features three main oscillators with individually selectable waveforms to give you the best control over your sound. The second and third oscillators can be tuned to the first , and number three can work as an LFO.

This plugin is available for mac OS 10.7 or higher and Windows XP or higher , both 64-bit . It comes in VST, AAX, and AU plugin formats. It also works in standalone mode.

The Minimoog is one of the most cherished synths ever made , and GForce managed to cover that aspect while adding new features brilliantly . The added functions are a great tool for producers wanting to expand the classic Minimoog sonority to the extreme.

LennarDigital Sylenth1 (Moog-like Design Only)

Built for maximum control and quality sounds, Sylenth1 is the plugin that will become your go-to software for melodies.

LennarDigital focused on creating a plugin from the producer’s view to appeal to every new and experienced EDM or Future Bass producer . They added four oscillators that you can customize and added various filters and modulations to enhance the sound you’ve created; with  all those options, you can focus on the master effect section, which allows you to apply different arpeggiators, reverb, and compression effects, and a phaser, distortion, and chorus effect.

Top 20 Moog Synth Emulation VST Plugins | integraudio.com

  • 4 Oscillators

To achieve a unique sound, the Sylenth1 gives you four oscillators . Each oscillator provides a distinctive analog sound that you can tweak to provide up to 32 voices per note . The plugin also features a polyphony option to expand the sound even more. Additionally, you can tweak each tone with the volume , phase , detune , stereo , and pan knobs .

  • ADSR And LFO Envelopes

Sometimes you want to make sounds that don’t sound harsh in attack but slowly enter your song without being in the way of other sounds. To achieve that, you can use the ADSR controls, which allow you to tweak your sound’s speed, decay, saturation , and release , and use the LFO to make interesting low-frequency additions .

  • Mastering Effects

When you are about to finish your sound, you might want to try adding some arpeggio to it or maybe give a bit of delay . Those modifications are all possible by using the mastering effect available in Sylenth1 . Explore different options, such as a Phaser effect , or try using the built-in compressor to reduce unnecessary signals.

  • Built-in Mixer

When you have more oscillators working at once, you might notice that one specific sound needs to be slightly lower than the other . To help you with that, Lennar Digital implemented a simple mixer that lets you tweak the sound with three sliders . You have a Mix A and Mix B slider for the tones separately and a Main volume slider for the final product.

  • Analog Filters

Since this is an homage to older hardware used in electronic music, the Sylenth1 features two sections for an analog filter integrated into the plugin . The first section gives you control of the filter’s resonance and cutoff , while the second gives you different cutoff and resonance tweaks, a key track knob, and a warm drive mode for an even better analog feel.

Sylenth1 is available for Windows 2000   or higher 32-bit and 64-bit  and  macOS 10.7 or higher 32-bit and 64-bit . It comes in  VSTi, AU,  and AAX  formats.

Sylenth1 is an excellent plugin for achieving an interesting analog vibe in your tracks, but at the same time, it offers great sounds that you can customize extensively .

In addition, the plugin is also wonderfully optimized and temporarily turns off any effects you aren’t using to keep the CPU usage to a bare minimum .

Image Line Sawer (Moog-like Design Only 2)

Top 20 Moog Synth Emulation VST Plugins | integraudio.com

Sawer is a software synthesizer based on the 80s analog sound engine, with a unique sonic character reminiscent of the Polivoks hardware.

Arturia Mini V

More Info & Price (Trial Available) Another take on an iconic Moog model by the most experienced sound designers out there.

Sometimes producers may want to use a sample library to ensure that all aspects of an instrument’s sonority are replicated and captured accordingly, but synthesizers don’t work like this .

They generate signals and sounds, so capturing a sample may not be useful in determining its sound profile. Thanks to innovative technology and much love for Moog Music, Arturia makes Mini V sound as realistic as possible.

Top 20 Moog Synth Emulation VST Plugins | integraudio.com

Like the original Moog unit, Mini V features three main oscillators that ensure the frequency range and waveforms are just like the original . Further adjustments like precise fine-tuning and key tracking make it more friendly for working with a computer.

  • Ladder filter

The famous 24dB ladder filter in Moog circuits is a staple in hardware and software renditions of synths , recreations or not. Arturia took time to recreate this feature carefully and all the sonic aspects revolving around it , with all its grit and character.

The envelopes in the original Moog unit were always praised for the distinctive snap in quick attack adjustments , generating crunchy transients and gritted signals worthy of another dimension . To get all these iconic sounds instantly, you only need to tweak the knobs.

Many synths feature polyphonic modes, and Moog synths have been doing this since the early 1970s. So feel free to add two, four, eight, 16, or even 32 voices to your track and count with a “Unison mode” that can add multiple voices from a single note.

Yet again, Arturia has done an excellent job recreating famous studio gear from the past. Mini V , which is included in their excellent V Collection package , boasts a high quality and attention to detail in multiple ways , especially when it comes to crucial elements like envelopes and oscillators.

As a result, you can expect the most authentic tones to be generated within this plugin.

The looks of this plugin may reveal what lies beneath: the 1980s-inspired aesthetics recall the great decade for synthesizers , with multiple parameters and controls to be adjusted. The Memorymoog  may not be as well known as its older brothers, but it’s equally important and relevant in modern music production situations.

Top 20 Moog Synth Emulation VST Plugins | integraudio.com

Differently from the typical three or five oscillators, Syntronik 2 Memory-V features eighteen of those. This is six times more than the Minimoog would’ve provided, reflecting how versatile and powerful this unit can be.

  • Filter section

The “Filter” segment houses all parameters for adjusting the frequency response in your signal. Of course, you can adjust common ones, like “Cutoff” and “Resonance,” but additional buttons can take care of the modes – “LPF,” “BPF,” “HPF,” and “Notch” – as well as define the frequency slope you may want to use.

  • Arpeggiator

The arpeggiator , or step sequencer , can be a mindful and important addition to a synth’s sound. The possibilities behind every pattern built are endless and can be very furtive to generate fresh, new ideas on the go.

The sample files included in Syntronik 2 Memory-V are of the best quality , totaling 5GB in size and over 6,000 individual samples . In addition, you can load over 145 presets that are ready for your use and four multis.

As a result, the effort to recreate the oscillator’s behaviors and characteristics is remarkable , delivering an authentic vintage sonority worthy of the original instrument.

Top 20 Moog Synth Emulation VST Plugins | integraudio.com

  • Top Octave Divider

The “Top Octave Divider” oscillators are a main feature in the original Polymoog synth. In essence, each oscillator divides a frequency into 12 different intervals in an equal-temperament scale , only to be multiplied by two to get additional notes going . This results in a blasting polyphony , aside from a very characteristic sonority.

The “LOCK mode” refers to a specific setting in which two oscillators are phase-locked to generate a phase modulation whenever an LFO or other similar source modulates the square waveform .

  • Master gain

The included mixer allows you to mix up to four different sources while setting the master volume with a dedicated fader. Of course, you can tweak individual volumes, but it’s always nice to have control of the entire section at once.

  • Resonator filter bank

A serious element that influenced a lot the final sound in the original Polymoog synth, the “Resonator Filter Bank” offers three parametric filters that can be set regarding “Level,” “Frequency,” and “Resonance” individually . In addition, you can also choose between “LP,” “BP,” “HP,” “6dB,” and “12dB” modes.

This plugin is available for mac OS 10.9 or higher and Windows 7 or higher , both 64-bit . It comes in VST2.4, VST3, AAX, and AU plugin formats.

But, gladly, companies like XILS-lab are willing to recreate its essence to the tiniest details , and PolyM is just like that. Even the interface was designed to be very similar to the unit, which can be helpful if you already know how to use it.

IK Multimedia Syntronik – Bully

More Info & Price (Trial Available) It’s all about the bass.

The Moog Taurus series was remarkable for its distinctive bass tones . The original unit was a foot-operated synth that resembled the organ pedals found in great churches, but it’s fair to say that’s where their similarities end. Instead, the  incredible features and distinctive elements inspired IK Multimedia to create a highly functional virtual instrument that resonates with the legacy of the original hardware.

Thankfully, IK Multimedia made this hardware accessible by carefully replicating it in digital format, and you won’t be disappointed with the result.

UVI PX Memories

More Info & Price The same iconic sounds, but in virtual format.

The Memorymoog has a very high reputation for nailing the best polyphonic sounds in any synth to this date. However, even this amazing unit could demonstrate that nothing is perfect: its hardware had some serious limitations and instabilities that compromised the sound’s consistency, so in 1997 Lintronics released the Lintronics Advances Memorymoog (LAMM), an updated version that could even handle MIDI more swiftly.

moog voyager plugin

The main panel houses the basic configurations that will make your synth work nicely . You can quickly configure layers “A” and “B” with their own “Volume” and “Pan” controls , select and configure the oscillators , set the  “Amplitude” either in “Normal” format or with the “LAMM Mod,” and finally configure the filter type (“LP,” “BP,” or “HP”) and set their parameters.

  • Edit section

The Edit interface allows you to set the common elements in the Memorymoog sound: you can switch between “Mono” and “Polyphonic,” activate the stereo imaging , and modwheel configurations for the vibrato, tremolo, and filter sections.

  • Mod segment

The step modulator allows you to define how your modulation will resonate precisely. For example, you can apply filter and volume configurations to both layers “A” and “B,” set the proper LFO settings , and adjust “Pitch,” “Volume,” and “Filter” within it.

The onboard effects have dedicated segments on the “FX” page . For example, you can choose from “EQ,” “Drive,” “Thorus,” “Ensemble,” “Phasor,” “Delay,” and “Sparkverb.” In addition, each division has controls , such as a “Power” button to activate each effect individually and some parameter knobs to manage their quality.

This plugin is available for mac OS 10.14 or higher and Windows 10 or higher , both 64-bit . It requires UVI Workstation version 3.0.16 or higher and Falcon version 2.1.1 or higher.

Lintronics Advanced Memorymoog was such a successful modification to extend the original unit’s functionalities that it deserved to have its plugin format. The attention to detail led to a close rendition of what the real mod sounds like, but with less maintenance . All aspects are included in the software, with high fidelity to the sound profile it should provide the user.

The best thing about Moog synths is that the instrument consists of multiple sections connected, resulting in exquisite segments that could be used independently . UAD thought of this and provided a collection that houses the filter and sequencer parts in the same plugin so that you can use it as you wish.

As completely as it gets, the filter segment was borrowed from the Moog Sub 37 synth and offered four filter slopes that work in the range of 20Hz to 20kHz . So you can add gentle nuances to your frequencies or go ahead and be bold with it. So, for example, you can make drums stand out in your mix and add a deep profile to your guitar part.

  • The sequencer

The intuitive step sequencer included in Multimode Filter XL has four lanes and provides 16-step sequences that can make any pattern as intuitively as possible . Be a melodic pattern or a new rhythm in your mind; this  is a useful tool to help increase your musicality or racket , depending on your need.s

Although not a synth plugin per see, Moog Multimode Filter Collection takes the best elements of a synthesizer and isolates it like two effects on their own. This is extremely useful for mixing and tailoring your instrument’s virtual or real sound .

Cherry Audio VM900 Collection

More Info & Download (Trial Available) The entire Moog 900-series is available to you in a single package.

To wrap up our list, we have one more awesome Cherry Audio offering that can greatly assist in replicating more iconic Moog sonorities. This time, the focus is the 900-series which contains great modular synths and additional tools.

  • The package

You can expect great products from the 900-series , like the “ VM900 1630 Frequency Shifter,” “VM900 900-1 Blank Panel,” “VM900 901 Oscillator,” “VM900 904A Low Pass Filter,” and 22 additional modules.

This is the most comprehensive item on our list , with multiple offerings that make it the ultimate Moog compilation . In addition, every module in VM900 Collection boasts high quality and fidelity to its sounds , which can be crucial in exploring new sounds and even counting on the iconic tones Moog is known for.

Bob Moog is one of those inventors who significantly impacted the world’s history . Even if you’re not familiar with him – which is odd, as most producers and musicians worship him – you can’t deny his impact on modern music.

His synthesizers , which bear the name Moog , always prompted great tones and impacted significant changes in how we deal with signal flow . The first modules were full of personality and character, which prevailed even in their friendlier synth keyboards built to this day.

Our list brought amazing replicas and recreations of his synths, some very faithful and others more audacious to fit modern uses. So no matter what you seek, we can assure you that every item listed here will bring you the results you aim for.

Among the best options, we recommend the multiple Cherry Audio offerings ( Miniverse, Memorymode, and Rackmode Signal Processors ), as each can be very close to the real unit they wished to replicate and prove that this company was determined to bring you the best virtual Moog instruments. Another great variety of options comes from Arturia ( Modular v3, Filter MINI, Mini V, Solina V2 ), a company that excels in making great virtual instruments.

For the freebies , the great prize goes to another Cherry Audio plugin (they’re unstoppable!): Surrealistic MG-1 Plus delivers what it promises and a bit more , thanks to the careful process of translating all the nuances of an electrical circuit into virtual algorithms that are very responsive and organic in sonority.

Ultimately, it all comes down to your preferences and what best suits your production needs . Remember to try the plugins out before buying any.

See you next time!
