3 Best Niagara on the Lake Bike Wine Tours

Table of Contents

Have you ever wanted to explore the stunning vineyards of Niagara on the Lake while enjoying a leisurely bike ride? Well, now you can!

There are several amazing wine tours available that combine biking with some of the best wines in Canada.

From exploring wineries and sampling their exquisite products to learning about local history and taking in breathtaking views, there is something for everyone. I’ve spent a lot of my childhood and adulthood exploring the region – from the vineyards to the theatre to the beautiful hiking trails. I want you to explore it like I have!

Cycling around the region means avoiding driving yourself or getting on packed bus tours full of rowdy people.

Here are three of the best Niagara on the Lake bike wine tours that will give you an unforgettable experience!

1. Cycle and Wine Tasting Tour

🤩 5 out of 5 (171 Reviews )

This guided Cycle and Wine Tasting Tour through Niagara-on-the-Lake wine region will take you through scenic bike trails, vineyards and wineries. You’ll be able to ride along generally flat, simple biking routes and taste unique Canadian wine varietals, including Ontario’s famous ice wine.

On the 6.5-hour tour, you’ll also enjoy a two-course lunch at one of the wineries.

If you don’t want to spend the entire day on this tour, there is also a 4-hour half day option available.

The terrain is pretty flat, so you won’t have to worry about chugging up hills with a full belly. But you should still wear comfortable shoes, like sneakers, as heels can get caught in the pedals.

Your tour guide will give you historic information about the Niagara on the Lake region as you make your way through the trails between the vineyards.

It’s really well organized so you’ll be seeing the best of the area, getting the most wine, and not cycling extra miles just to do so.

“We had a great group and a interested leader. Riding bikes is probably the best way to do a wine tour.” – Vicky H (Read more reviews )

2. E-Bike Wine Tour

🤩 5 out of 5 (12 Reviews )

If pedalling across a small town sounds a bit too much like “work” when you’re having a fun day out, that’s ok! These e-bikes will take over the heavy pedalling so you just have to glide along and enjoy the views.

Since the e-bikes are motorized (but eco-friendly, as they’re electric), you can cover way more distance, which means you aren’t stuck visiting the closest wineries if there are better ones out there. Your guide will ensure you get to the very best vineyards for your wine tasting tour!

This small group tour of 8 people means you can hear the guide as you go, so you aren’t having to stay at the front of the pack to hear all the information about the area.

One a beautiful, sunny summer day, this is really the way to ride in style. We all know Ontario can get H-O-T hot in summer, so getting to relax on an e-bike with a cool breeze in between stops at the vineyards is a great way to compress for the day.

This is a great tour for friends, couples, and even for bridal parties.

However, it’s important to note that the bikes will be going fast – about 25 km/h. You have to maintain speed to keep up with the group. So if you’re looking for a slow jaunt, this might not be the tour for you.

“Fun times as we rode all over trails near the river and lake and back roads to get to wineries.” – Judy H (Read more reviews )

3. Vine and Dine Bicycle Wine Tour with Lunch

🤩 4.5 out of 5 (80 Reviews )

Your itinerary with Vine and Dine bicycle wine tour i ncludes 25km of cycling. This sounds like a lot, but broken up over a full day, it’s really not that hard! Especially since the Niagara Escarpment in this area is pretty flat.

In fact, when I cycled to the Beaches in Toronto from my house it was over 20km and only took me about an hour at a medium pace.

Thank god for bicycles making us move so fast!

You’ll visit 3 of the top wineries where you’ll taste the best reds, whites, and ice wines on offer in Niagara on the Lake . After your second tasting, you’ll stop for a delicious picnic lunch by the Niagara River. This will give you time to soak up some of the wine so you aren’t too dizzy on the second half of the cycle!

This tour is best in the fall or spring, when it’s not too hot yet. As you’re cycling without tree cover for much of the ride, you’ll get quite hot in Canadian summers.

“We did our tour in early October and found this to be the perfect time of year as you didn’t have the blazing hot sun on you while riding and could enjoy the leaves starting to change colour!” – Joshua P (Read more reviews )

Best Time to Go on a Bicycle Wine Tour

Canada has a stereotype for being a cold country. Yes, that’s true in winter.

But in summer it is so incredibly hot that we literally tell people not to go outside most days.

So while summer might seem like the best time to go on a bike tour, it really isn’t. Especially if you, like me, melt in the heat.

Instead, fall is the best time to go on a bicycle wine tour. This is closer to harvest season, so the grapes on the vine are more plump and interesting to see. It’s a little bit less crowded as most of the bus tours are at their peak in mid-summer.

And it’s more beautiful to cycle through the trails with the fall colours . Plus it’s a lot cooler out.

This time of year can get a bit chilly, so you’ll do well to wear a light sweater, especially if you take an e-bike tour where you’re moving at fast speeds.

Another good time to take a bicycle wine tour is in the spring . While it can be a bit wet (so wear pants that can get splashed if it’s been raining!), again it’s chillier temperatures but not freezing. This means you won’t be showing up to the wine tastings drenched in sweat and reaching more for water than alcohol!

Conclusion: Best Bicycle  Wine Tours Niagara on the Lake

Honestly, I can’t think of a better way to do a wine tour than on a bicycle in Niagara on the Lake! I’ve done a few wine tours in my time around the world , and I still think this is one of the prettiest areas with the best options to taste.

Plus the added exercise of the bicycle means you get to avoid crowded buses, work off some of the wine so you aren’t quite as full and can drink more (no spit buckets here!), and you get to see more of Niagara on the Lake.

I remember riding in on buses for school trips as a kid and I always felt like if I could just get off the bus, I’d get to see so much more.

I hope you get to experience the magic of Niagara on one of the bicycle wine tours this year! Looking for more tours? Check out these day trips from Toronto to Niagara Falls!

Canada Travel Planning Guide

🚑  Should I buy Canada travel insurance?

100% YES!  — Canada has “free” healthcare but it’s only for citizens! Foreigners visiting need travel insurance in case anything happens on their visit. I recommend World Nomads – starting at just $5 a day!

💧 Can you drink the water in Canada?

Yes  — In all major cities in Canada, you can drink the tap water. There are very few, rural areas that you can’t. However, you should never drink river or lake water anywhere in the country! I recommend a Brita Water Bottle for long hikes and backcountry camping to stay safe and hydrated.

🚙💨  Is it safe to rent a car in Canada?

Yes  — Renting a car is a necessity in most of Canada! If you want to go on road trips or adventures outside of the major cities, you’ll need to rent a car. ( Read more )

📲  Will my phone work in Canada?

Maybe  — Some American companies work in Canada, but many will not. If your phone doesn’t work in Canada, I recommend getting a Canadian SIM card so you can get around and stay in contact with loved ones. We don’t have a lot of free WIFI in Canada, so you’ll need your phone for maps.

🏩  What’s the best way to book my Canada accommodations?

My go-to for Canadian hotels is Booking.com . For hostels, I use Hostel World . If you want a home-y feeling, check out VRBO (which is cheaper and safer than Airbnb).

Or get free accommodations with Trusted Housesitters!

✈️  What’s the best site to buy Canada flights?

For finding cheap Canadian flights, I recommend  Skyscanner .

🎫  Do I need a visa for Canada?

Likely Not  — US, UK, and EU passport holders don’t need Canadian visas. However, some other countries do ( check here! ). And if you plan to stay for more than 4 weeks (an average tourist visa length), you will need to look into visas to live in Canada.

Our testimonials

We opened May 19th, 2023 and have had a great start thanks to those who are picking us!

Had a fantastic experience with this bike hire company. We caught them on the hop as we just turned up out of the blue and we were the first customers of the season! Michael and Sukie couldn't have been more accommodating. The bikes were great. Virtually brand new and comfy. I realised after about 1km that my front brakes were binding a bit so I rang the company and within 5 mins Michael appeared in his truck and swapped my bike for another! Amazing customer service. The mint tea and a tour of the farm at the end topped off a very memorable and enjoyable experience. Thank you!

Rachel N

"I had an incredible experience with this bicycle rental company. Right from the beginning, their exceptional customer service stood out. The host went above and beyond to resolve an online booking issue I encountered, resolving it within a mere 15 minutes. Their attentiveness and efficiency truly impressed me. Now, let's talk about the bikes themselves. The comfort bikes provided were an absolute delight for our journey between wineries. They were comfortable, well-maintained, and perfect for exploring the picturesque landscapes. We effortlessly visited five wineries in a single day, and I wouldn't change a thing about our adventure. It was the ideal way to immerse ourselves in the beauty of the region. I highly recommend taking advantage of their offer for a farm tour. It was a captivating experience that provided us with valuable insights into the vibrant Niagara horticulture. We learned so much about the region's agricultural practices and got a deeper appreciation for the local produce. To top it all off, after an invigorating afternoon of cycling, we were greeted with a delightful surprise. Fresh strawberries and refreshing mint tea awaited us, offering the perfect respite and rejuvenation. It was a thoughtful touch that showcased their commitment to ensuring a memorable and enjoyable experience for their customers. Overall, I can confidently say that this bicycle rental company exceeded my expectations. Their excellent service, top-notch comfort bikes, fascinating farm tour, and thoughtful refreshments made our day truly unforgettable. I wholeheartedly recommend them for anyone looking to explore the Niagara region in a unique and enjoyable way.

Trae W

I had a wonderful experience renting a bike from bikes4rent this past weekend. I'm not the most experienced rider but the lovely lady at the farm gave me a few tips and let me practice around the farm for a little before I took off. I was also given some directions and points of interest before I left. It ended up being a gorgeous day and I biked 45.5kms in total and got to see many nice sites along the water, through the different wineries, through town and also farms with animals in the area. When I returned the bike, I was offered some tomatoes to take home however I don't eat vegetables so the owners were kind enough to allow me to pick some fresh strawberries from the farm to take home with me. While I was picking strawberries, I was also offered some refreshing mint tea. The people who own the farm are very kind and attentive and I will definitely be coming back next year once spring rolls along. Highly recommend this bike rental!

Rossana V

We rented two bikes—very last minute— to visit local wineries. The owners were very helpful and welcoming; they even offered to come replace the bike if any problems arose. After our biking, we were welcomed back with very refreshing homemade mint tea and given a tour of the farm. Pesticide free herbs, strawberries and more things to come. We are excited to see what you accomplish on your new farm, and look forward to visiting again soon.

Begin your bike tour of Niagara on the Lake's wineries at Jackson-Triggs.

Jackson-Triggs

2145 Niagara Stone Road , 905-468-4637

Established in 2001, the Jackson-Triggs Niagara Estate Winery is one of the most technologically advanced winemaking facilities in Canada. With an emphasis on crafting super and ultra premium VQA wines, the 11.5 acres adjacent to the winery were planted with only the finest vinifera clones and rootstocks, custom grafted in France.

Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah are the most widely grown in the Delaine Vineyard, while white varietals like Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Sémillon round out the plantings.

The winery is perhaps best known for its amphitheatre which hosts intimate concerts throughout the warm months that feature the best in Canadian musical talent. Wine and song beneath the stars makes for a transcendent wine country experience!

Cycle to Stratus Vineyards and enjoy a wine tasting on the sunny terrace.

Stratus Vineyards

2059 Niagara Stone Road , 905-468-1806

Stratus Vineyards is located on a 62-acre estate and features a slick wine boutique, contemporary tasting bar and two private tasting rooms – all created by acclaimed interior designer Diego Burdi of burdifilek.

Through its flagship wines, Stratus Red and Stratus White, Stratus Vineyards allows wine lovers to rediscover the noble tradition of assemblage, the art of combining several grape varieties to make a single wine. There is no recipe to follow; instead, each complex, age-worthy assemblage is an original composition that captures the essence of vintage and vineyard.

To winemakers, who share an almost spiritual connection to the land, the concept of sustainability, of preserving the environment for future generations, is a familiar one. The team at Stratus embraced the opportunity to create a new kind of winery. Guided by the principals of loose fit, long life and low energy, they built an adaptable state-of-the-art facility that produces the best possible wine with the smallest possible environmental impact. The Stratus winery is the first building in Canada, and the first winery in the world, to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the Canada Green Building Council.

Take a bike break at Inniskillin and cool off on their award-winning Icewine.

Inniskillin Wines

1499 Line 3 , 905-468-2187

Something miraculous happens in Niagara-on-the-Lake when the temperature dips to -8° Celsius; grapes left on the vine long after normal harvest begin to freeze.  As the water inside the berries turns to ice, the natural sugars and other dissolved solids do not. It is at this optimal temperature and usually in the middle of the night, that the Icewine harvest begins.

Perhaps the global reputation for cold Canadian winters gives an added credibility to the Icewines of Niagara-on-the-Lake, but there is no arguing that with the quality, variety and consistency of terroir, Icewine has brought worldwide recognition and acclaim. Synonymous with that quality is Inniskillin, credited with putting Canadian Icewine on the international map in 1991 by taking the prestigious Grand Prix d’Honneur at Vinexpo in Bordeaux, France. Many Inniskillin Icewines have since seen Gold and Best in Class awards at international competitions throughout Europe, Australia and North America.

The estate features several restored and redesigned historic buildings, including the Brae Burn Barn, circa 1920. Once home to Inniskillin’s French oak ageing barrels, the newly refurbished Founder’s Hall provides an exclusive dining forum where guests enjoy wine inspired cuisine with a view into the modern Demonstration Kitchen.

Cycle to Chateau des Charmes in Niagara on the Lake and enjoy a wine and food pairing.

Chateau des Charmes

1025 York Road , 905-262-4219

Château des Charmes was founded in 1978 by Paul Bosc, a fifth generation French winegrower. He did what no other winemaker in Niagara-on-the-Lake had done before, he planted Canada’s first commercial vineyard dedicated exclusively to vitis vinifera, the European grape varieties that make the finest wines.

In May of 1994, after many years of planning, Chateau des Charmes opened its state of the art winery and hospitality centre. The buildings design was inspired by the grand old Canadian Pacific Railway hotels and its green roof is reminiscent of the iconic Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City and Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.

Today, they farm four vineyards in Niagara-on-the-Lake, located in two distinct sub-appellations – St. David’s Bench and Four Mile Creek. Their premium single vineyard wines are a reflection of where they were grown. St. David’s Bench Vineyard wines are elegant with signature minerality. Just across the road, the Paul Bosc Estate Vineyard gives us wines that are bold and complex. The Estate Bottled series of wines use high quality grapes from all four vineyard sites that craft wines that are consistent from vintage to vintage.

If you’re popping by on a weekday be sure to enjoy Four @ Four, a food and wine pairing program ($20 per guest) featuring four gourmet snacks (Quebecois ash cheese, sweet wafer, local prosciutto and currant flecked dark chocolate) each complimented by one of the wineries Estate Grown & Bottled series.

Finish your Niagara on the Lake winery cycle tour at Ravine Vineyard's restaurant.

Ravine Vineyard

1366 York Road , 905-262-8463

Just down the road, Ravine Vineyard is an organic winery which sits on 34 acres of land in the sub-appellation of Niagara called St. David’s Bench. The  five generations old family farm plays home to the 200-year-old Loyalist Georgian Wm. Woodruff House. History buff’s take note, you’re now standing in one of Canada’s top 50 most architecturally significant ancestral homes! A painting of the property by one of the students of the Group of Seven Masters hangs on the wall in the tasting room.

Be sure to end your bike tour here so you can enjoy an early dinner as the sun sets over the winery’s lush vineyard. Ravine’s top notch culinary team offer one of Niagara’s most inspired “farm to table” menu’s which focus on celebrating what’s fresh and in season. In the winter you’ll find house-made charcuterie paired with plenty of pickles while the spring and summer month’s celebrate the sunny season by serving up bright beets, tart rhubarb and cool leek and potato vichyssoise. A suggested wine pairing is listed beside each dish on the menu, making those decisions at dinner a breeze after you’ve sipped yourself silly through Ontario’s wine country paradise.

Seeing Ontario, Canada , behind a pair of handlebars allows travelers to explore the area’s wineries, scenic pathways and more.

Bicycling at Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario, Canada (photo courtesy of Zoom Leisure Bikes)

Explore the Niagara-on-the-Lake region on bicycle to appreciate the area’s viticulture from many vantage points. Bring your own bike or rent one from Zoom Leisure Bikes and head to a scenic waterfront trail that is part of the Greater Niagara Circle Route. Travel northwest along Lake Ontario’s southern shore for a peek at Toronto’s famous CN Tower in the distance.

A leisurely ride through Niagara-on-the-Lake’s quaint downtown leads to the Niagara Parkway. Pass by historic Fort George and several picturesque wineries including Inniskillin, which is world-renowned for its ice wine, before taking in the brilliance of the blue-green Niagara River.

It is easy to navigate the area’s flat and even back roads that connect peach and apple orchards and more than 50 Ontario wineries. Spacious tasting rooms and shaded outdoor seating areas provide a perfect respite for cyclists, and many wineries have small bites, casual restaurants or pop-up events with food trucks.

Throughout the region, well-tended public garden displays are lush and vibrant. Farm markets and roadside stands are abundant with local fruits and vegetables. End a good ride with sweet and savory rewards — a bag of fresh-picked cherries or peaches from Kurtz Orchards farm market or a charcuterie plate and a glass of perfectly chilled riesling at Between the Lines Winery. Take in a Lake Ontario sunset from the viewing deck at Konzelmann Estate Winery, the area’s only lakefront winery, and be sure to pick up some Ontario-grown fruit spreads at Greaves Jams & Marmalades.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, jump on the Welland Canal Parkway Trail and bike alongside the cargo freighters making their way from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. A museum and viewing area at Lock 3 is worth a look. Cool off after a long ride at Nickel Beach in Port Colborne at the southern end of the path. When is the Best Time to Go on a Bicycle Wine Tour?

The best time to go on a bike wine tour in Niagara on the Lake really depends on what you’re after.

Tours are offered from spring to early fall (around April to October), with the summer months being the most popular.

Keep in mind, that this is also when the weather is at its warmest and the crowds are at their biggest.

The shoulder seasons, like late spring or early fall, can be a bit quieter and cozy if that is what you are looking for.

Our favourite time to do a wine tour is in the fall. The weather is more comfortable, and the vineyards are bursting with fruit ready to be harvested.

Weekends and holidays also tend to be busier, so if you’re all about that leisurely, uncrowded experience, weekdays might be a better option.

What Do You Wear on a Bicycle Wine Tour?

Think comfy and casual when heading out on a bicycle wine tour. This is not the time to get all dressed up!

We would suggest wearing breathable clothing that won’t hold you back while pedalling – like lightweight tops, shorts, or leggings. Sneakers are definitely our go-to for comfy footwear.

Don’t forget shades to block that sun. And if the weather’s looking unpredictable, a light jacket might also come in handy.

Most bike tours will tell you that bicycle helmets are mandatory, so there is no need to worry about bringing a hat.
