Extra Information:  you will need a valid picture ID or passport to travel to Norfolk Island and you will be leaving from your International Terminal.  Please allow 2.5 hours before your departure time to arrive at the airport to allow for check-in, having to go through customs and the walk to the terminal gate.

We suggest you take a snack with you for breakfast and maybe something for your flight.

All package deals require full payment at the time of booking and are non-refundable once tickets have been issued.

Disclaimer: Channers on Norfolk does not take any responsibility for what transpires after tickets are issued.  This is another reason it is vital to take out travel insurance in case of any unforseen circumstances.

Covid?    What if Covid stops you from travelling?

Should Covid restrictions come into play for your travel dates, the airline is currently allowing us to put your ticket into credit and we would do the same for the accommodation etc.  We simply have to defer to future dates that suit us both and you still get to travel to beautiful Norfolk Island.  A refund is NOT  possible.  If Qantas changes their policy not allowing us to put your ticket into credit, then a deferment will NOT be possible.

If, however, your reason for not travelling is not Covid related , this is when travel insurance is so important.  We all know medical emergencies or other things can crop up and travel insurance is the only way to cover your package costs.  It is still important to take out travel insurance for this reason.

Kingston Convict Ruins, Norfolk Island

Welcome to our 8 day Norfolk Island adventure. Making our way to the international airport we prepare to board our short flight. It is not long before iconic pine trees and green hills of Norfolk Island come into view from our window and our anticipation will begin to build.  Warmly greeted by a representative from Baunti Tours, we are transferred to our accommodation at the Paradise Hotel & Resort where we unpack and settle in for the next 7 nights. Nestled within superbly landscaped gardens, this well-presented resort has the perfect surroundings and facilities to ease ourselves into our south pacific holiday. The hotel welcomes us with afternoon tea refreshments then we’re free to enjoy a rest from our travels. Tonight we take our dinner seats in the onsite restaurant ready to be spoilt.

Dinner in Hotel Paradise Hotel & Resort, Norfolk Island (0011 6723 22177)

We wake to the peaceful sound of birds, a terrific way to start the day. Embarking on the Discover Our World tour we will be introduced to the island to set the scene for our stay. Our tour includes a visit to the convict buildings in historic Kingston and St Barnabas Chapel, built from the ruins of the New Gaol.  The afternoon tour is for the literature lovers. We visit the property of the late Colleen McCullough for a look into her world. The widely known author of 24 books called Norfolk Island home for almost 36 years. She and husband, Norfolk Islander Ric Robinson, created a luxurious hideaway and maintained their privacy to ensure that Colleen had the perfect environment for her writing. Some of her most powerful titles were created in this much loved sanctuary.  As we are escorted through her beloved property “Out Yenna” we can view the priceless collection of artefacts gathered on their travels and see where she worked into the wee hours creating the incredible tales that have sold in their millions.   Dinner this evening is at the Resort.

Breakfast & Dinner in Hotel

We have a different breakfast setting this morning as we are taken on a gentle-paced walk through a diverse habitat from rainforest to the Captain Cook Memorial . As we ramble along the track our guide will identify local grasses, ferns, shrubs as well as bird species. Our efforts will be rewarded with a delicious barbeque breakfast with all the trimmings. It will be a wonderful way to start our day. The afternoon is spent at the Pitcairn Settlers Village . Experience what life was like for Norfolk Island’s most recent settlers, the Pitcairners and their descendants at one of the last few remaining original settler’s properties. Light refreshments are included during our visit.

Breakfast on tour| Dinner in Hotel

This morning we join the Gardeners Delight Tour , a personalised tour journeying behind the scenes of bounty mutineer descendants, experiencing four gardens each a labour of love with inspirational stories.   Morning tea is served at a scenic location.  The afternoon is ours to do as we wish. Explore Burnt Pine and wander through the shops.

Tonight we enjoy an evening with some locals and join a Progressive Dinner . We are welcomed into the homes of Norfolk Islanders to enjoy their hospitality, treated to a three course dinner and listen to their wonderful stories of island life.

Breakfast in Hotel | Dinner on tour

This morning we visit the stunning 360° panoramic painting at Cyclorama which continues to impress with its ‘wow’ factor. It brings to life the Bounty mutiny and the history of the Norfolk Island people.

Later we transfer to a very special spot – the clifftop destination of Forresters Court , overlooking Cascade Bay. Our visit here will be another tour highlight as we enjoy a delicious High Tea . Served on their magnificent lawns, we’ll enjoy decadent food, a glass of sparkling wine and the glorious scenery. A beautifully presented setting with linen and fine china we enjoy our tea and coffee and a selection of local liqueurs to round out our indulgent afternoon.  Tonight, we dine under the stars so we set off to the western side of the island for the wonderful Island Fish Feast . Perched on the clifftop above Anson Bay we will have an eagle-eyed view of the tiny crescent shaped beach and the magnificent spread of ocean stretching to the far horizon. We’ll enjoy paddock to plate freshness including local fish, prepared the local way! Be charmed by an entertainer and Tahitian-style dancers before returning to our hotel.

Breakfast in Hotel | High Tea lunch| Dinner on tour

We have time to enjoy a wander through the markets this morning and see what’s on offer or attend a local church service.  The afternoon’s Convict Kingston Tour returns us to Kingston to hear about the first settlers, the Polynesians who came 900 years ago and the facts and legends associated with the first and second convict settlements.  Returning to our hotel, refresh and relax prior to dinner.

This morning we join the Norfolk Today Tour and learn how Norfolk Islanders live in the 21 st century and make life on this tiny South Pacific Island possible. How is petrol and gas brought to the island? How is the island powered? This is a behind the scenes tour where we’ll meet the locals and see how Norfolk plays a role in the worldwide weather monitoring as well as visiting the community radio station.  Later today we are picked up for our unique Glass Bottom Boat tour. Once we’ve “walked the plank” with these ‘mutineer descendants’ it takes a minute to get to the Reef. View beautiful coral gardens and tropical fish inside the calm crystal waters of Norfolk’s lagoon. Our guide will provide interesting commentary on this environmental tour. Dinner is at our resort before retiring for the evening.

Packing our belongings we farewell our lovely hosts. Before heading to the airport we take in a treasure chest of history. The Bounty Museum is an Aladdin’s Cave of inspiring stories stretching back to 1788.  Learn how the Norfolk Island flag came to be and pour over bounty memorabilia building a picture of how life looked in those early days compared to that of Norfolk Island today.    Arriving at the Norfolk Island airport we prepare for our return flight to Brisbane . (QF184 NLK 1645 – BNE 1710) Once our flight lands, we clear customs and immigration then head for home, completing our fabulous Norfolk Island tour.

William Goines, first Black member of Navy SEALs, dies at 87

When the Navy SEALs were formed in 1962, Mr. Goines was the only Black service member among the original personnel.

norfolk island tours 2023

William Goines, who as a child learned to swim in a creek near Cincinnati after being blocked from the local Whites-only public pool and later passed a grueling Navy training regime to become the first Black member of the modern-era SEALs in the early 1960s, died June 10 at a hospital in Virginia Beach. He was 87.

The cause was a heart attack, said his wife, Marie Goines.

During a 32-year Navy career — and scores of classified missions with SEAL teams and their precursor unit — Mr. Goines saw combat during three tours in Vietnam and was deployed for a possible invasion of Cuba in October 1962 during the Cuban missile crisis , one of the Cold War’s most dramatic showdowns.

With Cuba blockaded by U.S. warships, Mr. Goines and others were on a boat ready to mount amphibious attacks if the Soviet Union did not back down on plans to keep nuclear missiles on the island. In the end, Washington and Moscow pulled back to avert a potential superpower clash.

“It was so secret back then,” he said of his early missions, “they wouldn’t even tell us what we were going to do.” Mr. Goines retired from the Navy in 1987 as a master chief petty officer.

The U.S. military started to desegregate its forces after World War II, but the ranks of leadership and elite teams remained nearly all White in 1955 when Mr. Goines enlisted after graduating from high school. At the time, the path for many Black newcomers in the Navy was often steward roles such as cooking and serving in the officers’ mess.

Someone in Mr. Goines’s hometown of Lockland, Ohio, advised him to avoid that route if he wanted to advance in the Navy. “Whatever you do don’t accept a school for stewards,” he recalled being told , “because all you’re going to be is a servant for officers.”

Mr. Goines had already faced segregation while growing up. Authorities in Lockland enforced a strict segregation code at the public swimming pool. “When integration came to the area, the way I understand it, they filled the pool in with rocks and gravel so nobody could swim in it,” he said.

He taught himself to swim in a creek near his home. Sometimes, he went to nearby Hartwell, where the town pool allowed Black people from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. “They would blow a whistle and we’d have to get out,” Mr. Goines told The Washington Post. “They would drain the pool to get it ready for the Whites.”

In the Navy, Mr. Goines insisted he wanted to be part of active operations. Eventually, he was accepted in a training program for the Navy’s underwater demolition team, then known as frogmen, whose missions in World War II included valuable reconnaissance of Normandy beaches and German defenses before the D-Day landings in 1944. (Mr. Goines said he was inspired to join the Navy by the 1951 movie “The Frogmen.”)

He was sent to Malta. There, he began nearly a year of drills and rigorous instruction such as close-hand combat, martial arts, parachute drops and survival skills. In Mr. Goines’s class were Navy officers, enlisted personnel, Army Rangers and naval officers from various countries. Only 14 men, including Mr. Goines, successfully completed the training in 1957.

Mr. Goines was not the first Black member of the underwater demolition team. During the Korean War, a Black frogman, Fred Morrison , was part of missions that including helping rescue five Marines on a beach under heavy gunfire. Morrison was awarded a Bronze Star and a Navy Unit Commendation. In early 1962, President John F. Kennedy formed the original two Navy SEAL teams — standing for Sea, Air and Land — to boost American special-operations capabilities.

Mr. Goines was among 40 personnel, and the only Black frogman, picked for SEAL Team Two, based near Virginia Beach. Team One was set up on the West Coast.

Even with his SEAL status, Mr. Goines said racism remained a fact of life in the South. At a bar in Norfolk, he was initially refused entrance. He was eventually allowed in — but only after other SEALs threatened to leave and bad-mouth the bar.

Once, during a trip with Navy personnel, Mr. Goines was denied service at a restaurant. “Our officer told everybody to just stop what they were doing and to get back on the bus,” he recalled. He drove down the road and got takeout sandwiches.

“I helped integrate a lot of places — not on purpose,” Mr. Goines told the Virginian-Pilot in 2018.

Parachute team

William Harvey Goines was born in Dayton, Ohio, on Sept. 10, 1936, and moved to Lockland as a child with his family. His father, who passed for White, worked in an automotive plant and was co-owner of a gas station; his mother was a homemaker.

His father lost a few jobs, however, when employers discovered his background. “Not because they thought he was Black,” Mr. Goines recalled, “but because he was married to a Black woman.”

After the Vietnam War, Mr. Goines joined the Navy’s parachute exhibition team, the Chuting Stars, and performed more than 600 precision jumps over five years. His only serious injury was tearing cartilage in his knees when he landed hard during an event in Pennsylvania.

He later served as a recruiter, encouraging Black personnel to consider SEAL training. He also headed security for the school system in Portsmouth, Va.

His awards include a Bronze Star and a Navy Commendation Medal. In 2023, the U.S. Navy Memorial presented him with the Lone Sailor Award , given to veterans for distinction in their naval careers or after their service.

When curators of the National Museum of African American History and Culture were looking to build their collection, Mr. Goines donated his retirement memento. Under SEAL tradition, those stepping down from service get a display with a host of weapons including a knife, bullets and a deactivated grenade. The array is called “Tools of the Trade.”

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, the former Marie Davis.

Mr. Goines trailblazing service came close to never even beginning. He had lost the tip of his right index finger in a wood shop accident in high school. The officers evaluating candidates for underwater demolition team training questioned whether he was fit because of damage to his trigger finger.

“I said, ‘No, I’m left-handed,” he recalled in an interview with NBC News.

“Were you?” the interviewer asked

“Not really,” he said, smiling.
