Ocean Vodka Organic Farm and Distillery On Maui

Ocean Vodka is a company that produces vodka on Maui.  They are located in Upcountry, which is the western slope of Haleakala Volcano, east of Maui’s central valley. Phone 808-877-0009 .  Ocean Vodka is made from deep ocean mineral water and organic sugar cane.

Ocean Vodka offers a Maui Farm Tour. The tours run seven days per week (except holidays) from 9:30 AM to 4 PM.

The following is a report by Maui website reader Sid Robinson, about his visit to Ocean Vodka Maui.  Thank you to Sid for allowing me to share his report with you.

The Spirits of Maui

Hidden away from Maui’s endless beaches, hiking trails, waterfalls, tourist traps, restaurants, golf courses, and storefronts is a unique area of the island known as “upcountry,” where livestock and agriculture take top billing over surfing and snorkeling.

Just off the Kula Highway and just minutes from the Surfing Goat Dairy – also another worthwhile and delicious stop – is a somewhat unknown Hawaiian destination worth a visit.

Ocean Vodka Farm is an organic farm and liquor distillery that lends itself to an elevated panoramic view of the Pacific on both the west and east sides of the island, high above the isthmus that separates the two volcanic masses that form Maui. It’s also the home of Ocean Organic Vodka and Deep Island Hawaiian Rum.

After many trips to Maui, I finally took the distillery tour last summer. Known for its unique artistic spherical bottle, Ocean Vodka is the only vodka made from organic sugar cane grown in the farms that surround the small distillery. The sugarcane-based mash is blended with deep ocean mineral water sourced 3,000 feet deep off the Kona Coast of the island of Hawaii.

While sugar cane farms are disappearing on Maui the same way that citrus groves vanished throughout the Inland Empire, the 80-acre organic farm still offers one of the largest selections of sugar cane varieties in the world. There is plenty to support the international distribution of Ocean Vodka, as well as Deep Island Hawaiian Rum. Also blended with deep ocean mineral water, the rum is enjoyable by itself or in any number of tropical cocktails.

Between shopping and sightseeing, an escape to Upcountry Maui is no more than an hour’s drive from most of the island’s beach resorts. It’s also a convenient detour on the way back from sunrise at the Haleakalā volcano, and likely one of our destinations in the near future.

If a road trip isn’t in your plans next time you’re on Maui, then fear not. Ocean Vodka and Deep Island Hawaiian Rum are both available at stores around the Hawaiian Islands and at many locations on the mainland.

DAVE KENNEDY

Dave Kennedy is a storyteller above all else, and it’s easy to see why. His songs paint a cinematic portrait of America as his characters journey through love, heartbreak, humor, sin, redemption, revenge and perhaps even a few of the songwriter’s own footsteps along the way. Bringing these songs to life is a voice so soaring and powerful you can’t help but be swept away into his world by the end of the first chorus. He navigates his way through each story and each world with a dynamic presence of both strength and subtlety that appreciates both the peaks and the valleys, the highways and the backroads, the loves lost and lingering in his mind. It’s for all these reasons that Dave has a reputation as one of Nashville’s most respected songwriters and artists, and why artists like Travis Tritt, Riley Green, Whiskey Myers, Drake White, Larry Fleet and others are eager to continue writing and performing with Dave Kennedy. Dave also Hosts monthly premiere songwriter round Southern Rounds in Nashville.

A Labor of Love Our Story

Celebrate our oceans.

There is a Hawaii not often seen by those who live outside the islands, and yet it is all around. There is comfort in being surrounded by it, knowing all the gifts it has given, and still gives, to us. And here in Hawaii, wrapped in the warm and clear Pacific, we live by its rhythm, the Ocean.

We see the sun rise and set on it each day; it waits for us around every corner; it’s the reward for every scaled peak. It is the constant in the life of a Hawaiian. Whether in the presence of its vast stillness or when it rages against the sky, we’re humbled — it reminds us that we are small, and we are lucky to be here. All life is precious and flourishes because of it, and we offer tribute.

Ocean Organic Vodka.

Sharing paradise with the world

Anyone who’s lived or even visited the Islands shares a connection and deep appreciation for the things that make Hawai‘i such a special place on Earth.

For Shay Smith and his family, it is where their life-adventure and OCEAN Organic Vodka began. Being born and raised on Maui provided the luxury to explore this tropical paradise, which included passionately riding its magnificent ocean waves. The Hawaiian Islands are his home and a magical place worth sharing. After returning from college and some International travel, Shay was encouraged by his entrepreneurial parents to create a premium product from Hawaii with the desire of making it available around the world.

The idea of OCEAN Organic Vodka was sparked by an article in the newspaper about one of Hawaii’s natural resources – desalinated deep ocean mineral water off the Kona coast of the Big Island. This coupled with a collection of experiences like relaxing on the lanai after a long day, enjoying a libation and “talking-story” with friends and family became the basis for this celebratory creation.

As with most business concepts, a team is required to bring them to life…so he took the idea to his family to see if they were up for the ride. The answer was a resounding YES and so in 2004 the voyage began.

A Family Affair

From a family start-up to a growing enterprise, Hawai‘i Sea Spirits has grown its extended family to include experts in farming, distilling, operations, marketing, sales and more.

Through the production of award-winning distilled spirits to the tours given on our 80-acre organic farm, we always extend a heartfelt aloha. We play in the dirt and cultivate more than 30 species of Polynesian sugar cane under the tropical sun. The sunlight also helps provide power for our facility, which is situated on the beautiful slopes of Haleakala in Kula, Maui. This home away from home offers breathtaking views and is open seven days a week with guided tours, product sampling, and a retail store featuring our spirits and merchandise.

Our Mission

Our business is about more than operating a farm and distillery that responsibly produces quality spirits. It’s about capturing moments in time with those we choose to create long-lasting memories…just like the memories created from visiting our Hawaiian paradise. We create the best spirits on this planet using the best ingredients available. Quality ingredients come from nurtured Earth. Given the reach and physical consumption of our products, our mission is to use this as a platform to become excellent storytellers. As our products reach more, so does our story.

What Distilleries Can You Visit On Maui?

Cocktails are, for many, a necessary part of a trip to Maui. And for a good cocktail, you need a base made from excellent spirits. Luckily, Maui is home to several distilleries, emphasizing local ingredients and classic Hawaiian flavors.

With both a Maui rum distillery, and a vodka distillery on Maui, there are plenty of options for the cocktail connoisseur.

So, where can you go on Maui to get a good (handmade) drink?

Man carrying barrel ion his shoulder n distillery.

Are There Distilleries On Maui?

Table of Contents

Sipping a Mai Tai on the Maui beachfront is a classic Hawaiian vacation experience. For a real taste of the island, try something made with liquors and spirits distilled on Maui!

Maui is home to several distilleries, creating drinks made with local ingredients and a passion for island life.

If you’re after a different way to explore Maui, consider booking a tour to one of the local distilleries. You still get a chance to explore the scenery and discover local produce, and you get a drink on the way!\

Hali’imaile Distilling Company

We can all probably agree that “Hawaii in a bottle” sounds like a spectacular drink for sunny days and celebrations. Well, that’s exactly what the Hali’imaile Distilling Company aims to create.

This Upcountry based distillery uses local ingredients and small batch brewing techniques to create something that’s uniquely Maui.

Can You Tour Hali’imaile Distilling Company?

Yes, the Hali’imaile Distilling Company does offer the opportunity to explore the clean air and community that’s used to create their Hawaiian spirits. On the tour, a guide will take you through the facility, and you can discover how the process works.

The tour finishes in the tasting room, where you can grab yourself a sample of the Hali’imaile products!

The Hali’imaile Distilling Company is found at the center of the Makawao pineapple region, in Upcountry Maui . Pineapples play a key role in creating the Hali’imaile spirits, and are an iconic symbol of Hawaiian hospitality.

Tours run from Monday to Friday, at 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm.

Each tour lasts for roughly 30 to 45 minutes, and ends with the opportunity to sample 3 of Hali’imaile’s unique creations. Tours can be booked via the Hali’imaile Distilling Company website.

What Maui Distilleries Are There?

Besides the Hali’imaile Distilling Company, Maui is home to Ocean Organic Vodka, and Old Lahaina Rum.

The Maui rum distillery can be found in Makawao. To tour the vodka distillery on Maui, head for the slopes of Haleakala .

PAU Maui Vodka

The flagship product of Hali’imaile Distillery Company, PAU Maui Vodka is made using the pineapples that are so iconic of Maui.

Hawaiian spring water provides a crisp finish to a vodka that’s smooth and versatile.

Sweet molasses are distilled to create Mahina Hawaiian Rum , Hali’imaile Distillery Company’s premium rum.

Kona coffee distillate is used to give this rum that distinctive “Hawaiian” flavoring, while vanilla, cocoa essence, and clove create a complex flavor profile.

Paniolo Whiskey

Whiskey and pineapple may seem like an unusual combination, but Paniolo Whiskey combines these ingredients to create a uniquely Maui drink.

Distilled pineapple juice is mixed with blended whiskey for a smooth finish to an aromatic spirit.

FID St Hawaiian Gin

A juniper-forward dry gin made with 11 Hawaiian sourced botanicals, FID St Hawaiian Gin is the first Maui gin ever created.

With a clean finish and aromatic bouquet, this is a gin that reminds you of the fresh Upcountry air.

Ocean Organic Vodka

Ocean Organic Vodka was actually inspired by one of the resources Hawaii has huge amounts of: water. Specifically, the desalinated deep ocean mineral water that’s found around the Kona coastline of Big Island.

Another abundant Maui resource that’s essential to the making of Ocean Organic Vodka is sunlight! Sunlight powers the facility and grows the 30 species of sugar cane that are used in the distilling process.

Ocean Organic Vodka strikes the right balance between subtle and complex. Thanks to the quality Maui ingredients, Ocean Organic Vodka has a crisp finish that’s won the spirit numerous awards.

Can You Tour Ocean Organic Vodka Distillery?

A tour of the Ocean Organic Vodka Distillery is an interesting way to see the Maui scenery from a different perspective.

Located on the slopes of Haleakala, the environmentally conscious distillery runs a tour that covers everything from the sugar cane to the finished product.

Tours run daily, and operate on the hour from 12pm to 5pm.

Bookings are recommended, and can be made via the Ocean Vodka website, but they do aim to accommodate drop-ins.

If you don’t have time for a tour, visitors are welcome to take a look around the café and gift shop. And yes, they do stock more than just vodka.

Old Lahaina Rum

Old Lahaina Rum is operated by Kolani distilleries, and crafts its products from an old sugar mill in Paia .

The premium handcrafted rums are ideal for crafting cocktails (say hello to your best ever Mai Tai), and for sipping in the sunshine.

Old Lahaina Rum has a taste like no other, thanks to the exclusive Maui molasses used in the distilling process.

Can You Tour The Old Lahaina Rum Distillery?

Tours of the Old Lahaina Rum Distillery are not currently available due to the small size of the premises.

But Old Lahaina Rum has indicated that they’d like to offer tours in the future, so any rum fans should keep their eye out for developments!

Still Thirsty?

If that wasn’t enough for you, Maui is home to even more opportunities to grab yourself a local creation. For a classic taste of the island (and some surprisingly good pizzas) head to Maui Brewing Company . They also offer tours of their Kihei location.

Or try the Kohola Brewery Taproom in Lahaina, close to the Lahaina location of the Waikiki Brewing Company !

And for something completely different, check out MauiWine .

Maui’s distilleries offer a unique taste of the island, and a chance to see local ingredients and craftsmanship at work. Enjoy a tour, or simply grab yourself a bottle to toast the sunset!

Spirits Review

Ocean organic vodka.

ocean organic vodka tour

A well-done, organic vodka that breaks from the cookie-cutter mold that most vodka is cut from. Recommended!

Notes: An interesting vodka out of Maui, Hawai. The Ocean Vodka distillery is centrally located on 80 acres of land they grow some 30 varieties of organic sugar cane to make this vodka and use desalinated deep mineral water drawn from over 3,000 ft down and containing over 70 minerals. Grown in an organic and sustainable manner using complex and interesting water, it is a vodka well worth considering from an environmental and taste standpoint.

Appearance:  Exceptionally clear, limpid clear puddle in the glass light to medium coating on swirling with droplets forming at the top of the edgeline and legs forming below.

First Impression: Sugar cane white rum notes and minerals at first whiff.Complex grassy/cane notes and pleasant, harmonious alcohol notes of a well-done distillation.

Taste:  Delicious notes of organic cane with a lovely skeleton/bones of minerality to structure the vodka and support the alcohol nuances. The minerality reminds me of a classic Russian vodka with the cane notes giving it whispers of pacific islands. An adventure in a glass. The minerals are especially apparent in the lingering finish with a touch of alkali and slight drying on the midline of the tongue and a long mineral fade of stones and cane with just a teasing whisper of sweetness. A pleasing semi-plump mouthfeel with a touch of oiliness makes it a seductive choice in a vodka.

Drinks: Adds some complexity, depth, and character to most vodka cocktails. Gives the cocktail much more body and minerality and subtle distinction.

Bottle:  Beautiful ocean blue glass cast in an orb shape reminiscent of the Japanese net floats you used to see years ago, a globe of the world, or both. It is a striking presentation with a flat bottom and an offset neck. The word “Ocean” is molded into the middle of the globe and an imprint of the Hawai Islands on the other side, further harkening to the globe motif. Between these two design elements are a Maui-made seal, a USDA Organic certification seal, and the usual government-mandated labeling. Cork is a wood topper with a synthetic cork, and the cardboard neck ring/hanger doubles as a coaster. While the neck opening will accommodate a standard speed pour, the neck is a bit short, and the bottle makes it a bit difficult to pour quickly. It does, however, make sure the bottle stands out, and because of the height and shape, it will end up on the front row of a bar or sit magnificently on a home bar.

Other: Interesting take on a vodka. The use Of sugar cane instead of grain makes for an entirely different taste and mouthfeel from the usual boring vodka. The deep well mineral-laden water is also very refreshing to the fear of flavor RO water that far too many vodka companies use!

Final Thoughts: Organic, complex and interesting- a highly unusual combination!
