By Aniaya Reed

After the COVID-19 pandemic took the world by storm, the Northeast Kansas City Historical Society (NEKCHS) was forced to halt the popular Northeast home tours, until now. The society will host its Ninth Annual Homes Tour Saturday, October 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All seven properties are within walking distance: 300 Gladstone Blvd (The St. Francis), 435 Gladstone Blvd., 444 Gladstone Blvd., 309 Benton Blvd. (St. Anthony’s Church), 316 Benton Blvd., 516 Benton Blvd., and 430 Benton. The tour will begin at 315 Gladstone Blvd.

The first homes tour took place in February of 2012, and since then, NEKCHS has been showcasing the uniqueness of Northeast Kansas City homes.

President of NEKCHS Cindy Khin is a big advocate for the tours.

“The purpose is to identify and spotlight these beautiful, older homes, but we also want to bring back people to the neighborhood,” Khin said.

315 Gladstone Blvd. is the location for tent sales and check-in for the tour. They will have food trucks, curated vendors from Art Garden KC , a raffle for a unique Room Box (historical miniature), as well as NEKCHS merchandise for sale.

“The money we get also goes back to the people, and not just our merchandise and books,” Khin explained. “We want to showcase how important community is.”

Megan Morgan, Vice President of NEKCHS, talks about the influence the tour will have on the Northeast community.

“Some people give the Northeast a bad reputation, and the tours give us an opportunity to show our neighborhood in a positive light,” Morgan said.

In future years, tours will be held in the six neighborhoods, Indian Mound, Independence Plaza, Lykins, Sheffield, Pendleton Heights and Scarritt Renaissance.

“Northeast Kansas City Historical Society really combines historical presentation and community outreach,” Khin said. “We are six neighborhoods and one big community.”

old northeast tour of homes

Preservation, educational outreach and community outreach are the main topics the historical society wants to amplify in the Northeast.

“Older homes were being torn down to put in new buildings, so in effort to preserve old homes NEKCHS was created,” Khin said. “We want to preserve the beautiful architecture of the communities and its uniqueness. It really started as just an organization that was committed to preservation and historical significance. We started as just an annual home tour and developed to having multiple events. We’re growing modestly.”

The tours offer not only beautiful, memorable homes to explore, but also diverse and authentic people.

“It’s a good way to meet neighbors and meet new people,” Morgan said. “The cool thing about the tour is that it brings a lot of people into the Northeast who usually wouldn’t make a trip to Northeast. I think it’s eye-opening. We’re kind of like a hidden gem. People really end up liking our neighborhood.”

Both Khin and Morgan have participated in the tours, showcasing their own homes in Northeast for the public to see their hard work preserving these homes.

“Cindy and I have both had our homes on the tour, as well, and it’s a proud moment showcasing our houses after renovations and restorations,” Morgan said. “This is the opportunity to celebrate that.”

The other event the historical society will hold is the lecture series where speakers discuss the history of Kansas City. This month, John Bordeau will discuss the castles of Kansas City on August 16 at PH Coffee , 2200 Lexington Ave.

NEKCHS’s book “Volume 1: Kansas City’s Historic Northeast Neighborhoods” is currently sold out. The society is looking forward to sharing their book, “Volume 2: Kansas City’s Historic Northeast Neighborhoods,” which retails at $50 for non-members and $45 for society members. They will be selling the book at the tour and at the lecture, as well as annual memberships.

If you would like more information about the tours and the historical society please visit nekchs.net/index.html .

The 24th annual Old Northeast Candlelight Tour of Homes December 11 will again feature an array of beautiful historic homes. But this year, Tour guests will be treated to live musical performances while they visit the individual homes. And the musical lineup is as impressive as the Tour homes!

Ben Pila is a Juilliard-trained guitarist who’s performed at events for five U.S. Presidents and Pope Francis. The Tampa resident is the only classical guitarist ever named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. He’s performed extensively throughout the United States and has been a featured artist at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and Lincoln Center, Washington, D.C.’s John F. Kennedy Center, and San Francisco’s Herbst Theater.

Ben is a semi-regular performer at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum where he’s played on programs with James Taylor, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Itzhak Pearlman, and Yo-Yo Ma. Ben’s debut CD, “Commemoration,” is a tribute to the survivors and victims of 9/11.

Ben isn’t the only instrumental performer on the Tour. Victoria Garcia is a gifted harpist and holiday music is among her favorite genres.  She was inspired to play the harp as a child and has now been performing for over 30 years. She studied harp at the University of North Carolina. She has performed with the Tampa Bay Symphony and the Suncoast Symphony and currently is a member of the Tampa Bay Harp Ensemble.

Victoria has outstanding credentials and many years of amazing performances, but she says her favorite performance was playing at a private exhibit in St. Petersburg of Princess Diana’s dresses and gowns.

What’s a holiday homes tour without carolers? This year’s Tour will feature three groups of singers from  The Canterbury School of Florida. Two groups of students in grades 1-4 from the Hough Campus Singers will be joined by a group of 5 Upper School Thespians.  The students in grades 3 and 4 will include tone chimes in their repertoire and the thespian singers will also be performing to the music.

Between the decorated historic homes and the festive holiday music accompaniment, there will be no lack of holiday spirit at this year’s homes tour December 11 from 3-8. You can buy your tickets here https://honna.org/honna-events/annual-candlelight-tour/

OLD NORTHEAST

The historic old northeast, this beautiful neighborhood is full of tree lined streets and sits adjacent to the north end of downtown st. petersburg..

The Historic Old Northeast! Who’s familiar with the Old Northeast and/or visited this neighborhood for Halloween? They go all out with their displays. Like ‘Hollywood’ all out. Incredible. However, there’s SO MUCH more to this neighborhood than their Spielberg-esque decorations! Per the Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association (HONNA), the Old Northeast “is the FIRST established neighborhood in St Petersburg”. The Old Northeast was even listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. You’ll quickly notice brick streets, hex block sidewalks, granite curbs, and a mature tree canopy of oaks, magnolias, palms, jacarandas and pines.

There’s a neighborhood shopping area, waterfront green space, restaurants, and the Old Northeast is also home to many St Petersburg landmarks! From a home perspective, you’ll find a mixture of bungalows and Mediterranean styles, many with expansive front porches for gatherings. These older homes are graced with a history like none other.

old northeast tour of homes

The Old Northeast of course also holds North Shore Park, with swimming, tennis, wide sidewalks, nearby playground, even more green space, plus a beach! And then on the north side, you have Coffee Pot Bayou, a beautiful waterfront backdrop for biking, walking, reading, and manatee watching! The Old Northeast’s location is fantastic, as you’re within walking distance of the Vinoy Hotel and downtown waterfront. However, if you prefer to catch a ride, the St Pete public transit system offers bus service in the neighborhood!

As I mentioned earlier, per HONNA, the Historic Old Northeast is the first official neighborhood in St Pete. I can certainly see why it was established so early. The location is perfect, bordering the waterfront, Coffee Pot Bayou, parks, and of course now adjacent to Downtown St Pete. The neighborhood contains around 2500 households (3000+- historic buildings), with official boundaries as:

North: 30th Avenue N/NE South: 5th Avenue N/NE East: North Shore Blvd NE & Coffee Pot Blvd NE West: 4th Street N

As I read about the Old Northeast, I discovered it was originally a village of farmers. An article called the Old NE the “soul” of St Pete, with downtown as the “heartbeat”. HONNA notes that the area originally consisted of “pine trees, palmettos, sand flats, salt marshes, and several streams, ponds, and artesian wells”. They also note there’s a natural downward elevation slope from 4th street to the waterfront. The highest elevation is near 40 feet, around 9th Ave N and 4th St North. While there are nearby areas with even higher elevation, that’s high for these parts! Way back then, the shoreline north of 5th Ave had 4-5 foot tall sand bluffs, with a sandy beach below.

We all know the importance of elevation when purchasing a home in the Tampa Bay Area, or at least I hope your Realtor explains! Elevations can vary from street to street around here, and even home to home (ie year built). Some elevations are a bit low in Old Northeast, so make sure to check your perspective home’s elevation prior to purchasing. Even if the perspective buyer’s dream home has a low elevation (as with many around Tampa Bay), many of course decide that the Old Northeast location is simply too great to pass up!

Boaters: There are a small handful of properties with dockage across the street. Some of these properties have bridge clearance restrictions.

Flooding/Elevations: Be mindful of home elevations around the Old NE so you know what to expect with flood insurance. Some properties toward 4th street have reasonably high elevation, where-as some of the properties near the water have lower elevations.

Walkability:  An easy walk to downtown from a number of the homes, plus plenty of nearby areas to ride bikes, exercise, jog.

Waterfront/Water Views: While homes in Old Northeast are not directly on the water, some of them have water views. Not simply water views, views of Coffee Pot Bayou and a few with open’ish water views toward Tampa Bay.

HOA: While the Old NE has HONNA, the membership and fees involved are simply donations, they’re voluntary. HONNA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

old northeast tour of homes

Alright, onto the late 1800’s when the area became home to many citrus groves and other small farms. THEN in 1905 the first residential development began, orchestrated by C. Perry Snell. He pulled together the Bayshore Land Company with A.C. Clewis, F.A. Wood, and A.E. Hoxie. They started with the area east of 1st Street from 5th Ave N to 12th Ave N. Since they were starting from scratch, the public services all needed to be installed (ie water and sewer), streets planned, and land leveled. Recall the sand bluffs above. Advertisements back in the day evidently called the Old Northeast the “premier residential address”. That still stands true today, as many influential people have lived in the Old Northeast over the years and live there today.

The Old Northeast started with two subdivisions. One was called Bayshore and ran from 5th to 8th Ave. The other was called Bayfront and ran from 9th Ave to 12th Ave. Then C. Perry Snell added a developer by the name of J.C. Hamlett to the mix. Together, they purchased 600 acres in the area. Specifically, from 13th Ave to Coffee Pot Bayou. This was an even bigger task to tackle, as these 600 acres included creeks and ponds. It’s not cheap to develop land that includes these type of water features, however I imagine the location was too great to resist!

At this point the developers added seawalls, sidewalks, a park and trolley lines. They called this area “North Shore”. Anyone been to North Shore Park? A great area that our family visits frequently.

In 1925, Snell began work on “Granada Terrace”, requiring all homes be stucco and in Italian or Spanish style and only allowing certain color paint. While the Great Depression eventually slowed growth, most lots in the area were occupied by the 1950’s per the article. In 1974, HONNA was formed to help preserve and lead the historic neighborhood in a positive direction.

Onto the 1980’s, when the neighborhood began a renaissance, thanks to tax laws that supported home rehabilitation! This was aided by the pivotal decision to renovate the historic Vinoy Hotel. Instead of being demolished, the Vinoy went through a complete restoration and re-opened in 1992. The Vinoy project inspired many homeowners, leading to an uptick in interest of Old Northeast historic homes! That continues to this day.

In the intro, I mentioned that the Old Northeast was designated as a landmark in the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. Additionally, there are “districts” within the neighborhood that are designated as a “Local Historic District” by the City of St. Petersburg. This designation benefits these areas by providing protection from certain development. These districts are:

Grenada Terrace

200 block of 10 th Ave NE

700 block of 18 th Ave NE

“Welch’s Mediterranean Row” at 100 block of 19 th Ave NE

The individual landmarks in the Old Northeast include (some are private, please respect the owner’s privacy):

The Vinoy Park Hotel, 501 5th Avenue NE – Opened in 1925 on New Year’s Eve. Back in the day this was of course one of the tallest buildings in St Pete for years. It closed in the 1970s as it was run down. The decision was made years later to restore it, when it re-opened in 1992! My wife and I were actually members of the Vinoy for a number of years. We know it and love it!

For the other Old Northeast historical landmarks, I’m using the write-ups directly from the neighborhood association, as they know these buildings better than anyone:

“The Jones-Laughner Residence, 556 Beach Drive NE – Built ca. 1909 by Dr. Louis Jones, City Physician and Health Officer, this home is an excellent example of Craftsman style architecture using rusticated concrete block construction. Virginia Burnside, a leader among St. Petersburg’s women who resided in the house during WWI, made significant contributions to the war effort. In the 1920s, the founder of the Vinoy Park Hotel, Aymer Vinoy Laughner, purchased the home for the use of hotel personnel. His son, Paul, and daughter-in-law eventually made it their home.

The Ridgely Residence, 600 Beach Drive NE – Dentist Roy Ridgely, builder of this home, was an “ardent booster of the Sunshine City”. He established the Eureka Stone and Paving Company, a pioneer in the concrete business in St. Petersburg. His Craftsman style home is an excellent example of the rusticated concrete block manufactured by his company.

The Robert West House (Pineapple House), 101 6th Avenue NE – This is the 1912 home of Robert West who designed the first concrete bridge and first concrete sea wall in St. Petersburg. His design talents were also applied to the first City-owned gas plant, and plans for building and financing the city’s road system.

The Boyce Guest House, 635 Bay Street NE – Built in the mid to late teens, this vernacular style residence provided tourists with comfortable accommodations for twenty years following World War II. Almost thirty years later, the daughter of the earlier hosts and her husband, purchased the home and established the Sunset Bay Inn.

The Thomas Whitted House, 656 1st Street N – Thomas Whitted, the builder of this 1911 vernacular style house, owned the largest lumber supply business in St. Petersburg. He and his wife, Julia, raised eleven children, one of whom was Albert who became an aviator and operated the first commercial charter air flights out of St. Petersburg’s airport (later named after him).

The Monticello Apartments, 730 3rd Street N – This c. 1909 Neoclassical Revival home is another example of rare rusticated concrete block construction. In the 1920s it was converted to apartments catering to seasonal guests, and after WWII, became home to a group of artists. Later returned to single-family use, it was moved from 3rd Avenue North to its current location in 2005.

The Pace Residence, 705 16th Avenue NE – This 1932 home, designed by architect Elliott B. Hadley and built by Helen Pace Lawler and her husband, is an excellent example of the Mediterranean Revival style. One of the City’s earliest professional businesswomen, Mrs. Pace Lawler’s shop, Sherman’s, offered the latest in fashion to the women of St. Petersburg for over 50 years.

Sunken Gardens, 1825 4th Street N – Plumber George Turner began gardening as a hobby, but eventually gave up the business to devote himself full-time to developing Turner’s Sunken Gardens, one of Florida’s famed “roadside attractions”. Originally specializing in fruits and tropical plants, over the years he added birds and other small animals to the attraction.

First Church of Christ, Scientist, 253 5th Avenue N – Currently known as the Palladium Theater, the building is an excellent example of Italian Renaissance style architecture. Designed by Howard Cheney and constructed by the George A. Fuller Construction Company in 1926, the floor plan is typical of early 20th century First Church of Christ, Scientist designs. For almost seventy years, the congregation worshipped at this location. In the 1990s, it was repurposed as the Palladium Theater.”

Old Northeast Banner Debuts for Neighborhood’s Oldest Homes

old northeast tour of homes

This summer, you may see a new flag flying in the Old Northeast. In addition to the familiar designs of the neighborhood association’s popular honeycomb/hexblock designs, the area’s oldest homes now have a flag all their own. When you see the new Centennial Home Banner outside, you know the house is at least 100 years old.

With several hundred century-old homes in the neighborhood, the new flag should add another pop of color amongst the current array of banners – and historical distinction for residents and visitors. At least, that’s the goal of the Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association (HONNA).

“The Old Northeast has a lot of pride as a neighborhood, and we felt this flag was another way to instill pride,” said HONNA President Nick Bell.

Bell and Sharon Kantner, a prominent local Realtor and longtime organizer of the neighborhood’s annual Candlelight Tour of Homes, hatched the idea for a Centennial Home Banner last fall. And with so many local artists and creatives in St. Pete, it made sense to turn the banner design into a contest.

A photo of a woman in a white shirt and ripped jeans leaning on a pillar of a white front porch

Earlier this year, HONNA received submissions and about 10 of the submitted designs made a short list. At last, the winner was Lana Suarez, an Old Northeast resident and a visual design professional.

“We didn’t require the artists to be residents, but she is!” Bell said. “I think that’s great. We have such a great diversity of talent in the neighborhood. And she was psyched.”

Suarez spent weeks chipping away at her flag design in rare free moments. Between a full-time corporate career and a new baby at home, she somehow managed to find time to create. “I would get in bed and work for a few hours, maybe two or three times a week,” Suarez said. “I’m a very picky person. I must have gone through ten versions.”

For inspiration, Suarez looked at branding for similar neighborhoods in places like Savannah, Georgia, and took mental inventory from her neighbors’ homes while on afternoon walks. “I wanted to really match the vibe of the neighborhood, which is a mix of history and eclecticness. Some of my neighbors have been here a really long time, and we just moved here in 2020,” Suarez said. “So, I wanted to bring in the idea of transitioning from old to new.”

A photo of a blue banner with a hone graphic in the middle and the words "Historic Old Northeast Centennial Home"

Suarez’s own family home won’t fly the flag – yet. Her house has more than a decade to go before it’s a century old. Until the Suarez house hits that milestone, however, the artist says she’ll be happy knowing other homes in the neighborhood feature her distinctive banner. “I am so excited to spot it in the wild,” Suarez said. “I have a huge sense of pride and commitment tied to the design, and I put a lot of thought and time to it.”

HONNA says that the Centennial Home Banner should be available by mid-July. Verifying a home’s age will be more of an honor system, however.

“We can check our records to make sure a home is 100 years old, but we’ll just trust that they are buying this because their home really is that old,” Bell said. Funds from the Centennial Home Banner, like that of other HONNA banners, will benefit the neighborhood association. Bell said the flags are not typically big moneymakers, but the sense of pride they bring to the community may be priceless. “I think this is going to be great,” Bell said. “I wish every house in the neighborhood had an Old Northeast flag.”

Lindsay Arnold Shares How 3-Year-Old Daughter Flooded Their House: 'This Is So Unfortunate'

"All the floors on the main level need to be replaced," the 'Dancing with the Stars' alum said of the necessary repairs

Lindsay Arnold/Tiktok

Lindsay Arnold is trying her best to look on the bright side after her 3-year-old daughter Sage accidentally flooded a couple of levels of their family home.

On Thursday, May 9, the Dancing with the Stars alum , 30, posted a nearly four-minute TikTok explaining how her child caused their major and ongoing renovations.

“In case you’re having a bad day, let me tell you how our house just flooded,” Arnold said at the start of the clip. “Buckle up — pretty unfortunate events here.”

The dancing pro shares daughters Sage and June , 11 months, with her husband Samuel Lightner Cusick.

Before getting into the details, she prefaced her story by stating that she’s aware things could have been “totally worse” and that other “people are going through way worse things than this.”

According to Arnold, the family had gone out for a birthday dinner for her mom and when they returned home “our entire kitchen, main floor area was flooded” with inches of water. Cusick quickly went to check the basement, and due to him yelling “a nice big swear word,” Arnold could tell the situation was serious.

She said that before the family left for dinner that evening, all of the water had been shut off in their neighborhood for maintenance.

While Arnold and Cusick didn’t see the incident occur, they assumed from the aftermath that Sage had attempted to use a faucet, but when no water came out, the toddler didn’t bother to turn it off.

Arnold added that the maintenance ended shortly after their family left the home for the dinner, and that’s when the faucet must have also started working — “for almost three-and-a-half hours.”

The former DWTS contestant said the water went “right on to our countertop, all throughout our kitchen, and then obviously into our basement.”

In an April 23 TikTok, Arnold gave a tour of the home in which she shared that the basement had been renovated the month prior.

“So far this is the damage — All the floors on the main level need to be replaced. And also looking like all of our cabinets need to be replaced as well, as well as our kitchen island,” she said.

Arnold explained, “Now when they do that, they have to pull out the cabinets, which they might be able to salvage some of the cabinetry, but nine times out of 10, it means that your countertops are gonna break because it’s really hard to remove like, a full, marble countertop without it cracking.”

In addition to the family’s kitchen repairs, “down in the basement, they’ve torn out the entire ceiling,” drywall included.

Some of the flooring will need to be replaced in the basement as well.

“This is so unfortunate, and like I said, this could be so much worse. I’m trying really like, to remain positive,” Arnold said.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

“Maybe this happened for a reason. Maybe I can get some new countertops,” she said while laughing and then making a sad face.

Northeast Bexar County home was targeted by gunmen who killed 4-year-old girl, injured 4 others, sheriff says

Bexar county sheriff javier salazar said the suspects aimed to inflict ‘maximum damage’.

Julie Moreno , Executive Producer/Digital Content

Avery Everett , Multimedia Journalist

Matthew Craig , Photojournalist

SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar released new information Thursday, a day after two men shot up a Northeast Bexar County townhome , killing a 4-year-old girl and critically injuring four others.

The shooting happened around 7:40 p.m. in the 6700 block of Windsor Hollow Drive near the intersection of Walzem Road and Woodlake Parkway.

Salazar called it a targeted shooting. He said the men pulled up to the home on Windsor Hollow Drive in a gray vehicle, believed to be an Infinity Q50. Two men got out of the vehicle and opened fire on the residence where five people were inside. Salazar said the two men fired 30 rounds before they got back in their car and drove off.

A neighbor’s home surveillance camera captured the shooting. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office released the video and stills in hopes of identifying the suspects and making arrests.

Both of the shooters were wearing balaclava head coverings and at least one was wearing tactical gear.

Investigators believe both were carrying Draco AK-47-style guns and they fired 30 7.62-caliber rounds. Salazar said that round inflicts a “devastating wound” and said it was obvious the men were intending to cause “maximum damage.”

“They absolutely intended to take lives,” Salazar said.

Salazar said there may have been others waiting in the vehicle.

He said when the men are captured, anyone involved will be charged with capital murder.

Salazar said several BCSO units are focused on this case including the criminal investigations division and organized crime investigators.

Anyone with information is asked to call BCSO at 210-335-6000 or by email at [email protected] with information.

Shooting victims

Five people inside the home, including three children under the age of 10, were hit by the gunfire.

A four-year-old girl was killed. Salazar said she was shot in the head. Her two brothers, ages 7 and 8, have undergone surgeries. Their parents, ages 25 and 27, are also in the hospital.

Salazar said a neighbor, who is a nurse, tried to render first aid before EMS arrived.

A family member told KSAT that the family has a fourth child, a two-year-old boy, who was at a neighbor’s home at the time and was not injured.

This is a developing story. KSAT will bring you more information as it becomes available.

Sheriff vows justice after surveillance footage released in fatal shooting of child

by Robert Price

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar released home surveillance videos of the suspects and their getaway vehicle during a news conference Thursday in hopes of generating leads that can help catch the pair. (BCSO)

SAN ANTONIO - We're getting a closer and clearer look at the two gunmen who opened fire on a family's home in Northeast Bexar County Wednesday night, killing a 4-year-old girl and wounding her parents and two young siblings.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar released home surveillance videos of the suspects and their getaway vehicle during a news conference Thursday in hopes of generating leads that can help catch the pair.

This was not a drive-by shooting where they shot from the street. They wanted to get out and get up close and personal," Salazar said while showing video of the men running up to the house and firing thirty rounds. "They wanted to empty enough lead into that home to make sure that they inflicted maximum damage, to make sure that they killed somebody.

A four-year-old girl was killed, and her mom, dad and 7 and 8-year-old siblings are now in the hospital. All of them were shot inside their home on Windsor Hollow Dr. near Walzem Rd. and New World Dr. around 7 p.m. Wednesday when two men started firing 7.62 rounds from small Draco AK47 wood stock rifles.

RELATED: 4-year-old girl killed, four others critical after suspects shoot up Northeast Side home

"The rounds, almost as soon as they come out of that gun are tumbling, and so when they hit, they hit flat," Salazar explained. "That's a devastating wound that that makes, so you can imagine that coming into contact with a little girl, 4 years old."

A neighbor who asked not to be identified described the scene as terrifying. "After the gunshots, we just immediately started hearing screaming," the woman said. "I initially just got really scared because I know that area has a bunch of kids."

Investigators also provided a closer look at the shooters' getaway vehicle, believed to be a dark grey Inifiniti Q50. The sheriff wants as many people as possible to see these pictures and videos.

"It's just something that we can't allow to happen anywhere to anyone, much less a 4-year-old child that had nothing to do with anything," he said.

As for the surviving victims, they're still in the hospital. But at last check, the sheriff said their condition is improving. Meantime, he says several units – a huge chunk of the sheriff's office – is working to find these shooters.

"Is it going to give me great pleasure to charge both of these two guys with capital murder when the time comes, absolutely it's going to," the sheriff said. "I can promise you that."

Bexar County sheriff: Possible getaway car in fatal shooting found as manhunt continues

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar speaks to reporters in wake of a shooting in the 6700 block of Windsor Hollow Drive

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office on Friday continued its search for two suspects in connection with a shooting that left a Northeast Bexar County townhome riddled with bullets and a family of five wounded, including one fatally.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said during a news conference on Friday that investigators believed they found a stolen 2018 Q50 Infinity that the suspects used.

A 4-year-old girl died in the shooting in the 6700 block of Windsor Hill. Her 7 and 8-year-old brothers, and her parents, a 25-year-old and 27-year-old, were critically wounded in the incident around 7:40 p.m. on Wednesday.

The sheriff said all five victims were transported to the San Antonio Military Medical Center.

The townhome's subdivision is located near Loop 410 and Walzem Road.

Video from a home security camera captured images of the men coming from around the corner of the house, walk within 10 to 15 feet in front of it, and then open fire simultaneously.

"They just, for the lack of a better term, just Swiss cheesed the front of that house," Salazar explained. "It's a miracle that we're not dealing with five dead bodies right now."

He added that an organized crime unit is investigating the shooting. He described the shooting as "targeted."

Salazar explained that the weapons believed involved were Draco AK-47 rifles. He said 30 7.62 caliber rounds were fired into the townhome.

In Texas, the killing of a child under the age of 10 is considered a capital murder case, which carries the death penalty.

Restoration of E.J. Roberts mansion in Browne’s Addition serves as backdrop to Mother’s Day event

Mary Moltke talks about her Victorian Queen Anne E.J. Roberts mansion in Browne’s Addition on Wednesday. (Kathy Plonka/The Spokesman-Review)

A trip with mom to the E.J. Roberts mansion this Sunday will raise more than tea cups for Mother’s Day at the historic home in Browne’s Addition.

With events around two tea-and-tour ticketed sessions, proceeds will help owner Mary Moltke begin badly-needed restorations – estimated at $250,000. Free outdoor activities are planned.

It’s a joint venture of Moltke and Girls Gone Styled, a preservation and design business owned by Lisa Marie Henry and Marianne Bornhoft. They will run the kickoff fundraiser and plan to do similar, monthly events.

As its steward since 1981, Moltke has over the decades poured thousands of dollars into restoring and maintaining historic features of the Victorian Queen Anne-style home, a wedding and event venue. But it hasn’t had significant upgrades since the 1990s. Between recent setbacks and her age, Moltke said projects have piled up.

“It’s very difficult to keep up a home that was built in 1889,” Moltke said. “You’re constantly needing to paint and to restore wood trim, and it has to be done exactly the way that it was.”

Ornate details include painted faux wood grain finishes, intricate carved ceiling designs and stained glass windows.

Also called the Loewenberg-Roberts house, the 23-room mansion was designed for pioneer mercantile businessman Bernard Loewenberg, a Prussian immigrant who after financial problems traded houses in 1898 with Edward J. Roberts, who departed a nearby small home. Roberts was the chief engineer of the D.C. Corbin Railway Systems and founder of the Union Iron Works.

Moltke lives in another famous Spokane place, what was the “Benny and Joon” movie home on North Cedar. She always managed past mansion updates, until a few years ago.

“COVID set us back quite a bit because we had to stop all of our weddings and things, so we definitely need more masonry work on the building, as well as painting and replacing some of the wood structure.

“It needs shoring up from the basement. It has grown to be a lot at once at this point. The work I had done in here in the 90s now is starting to be needing replacement.”

Today, stained glass spread throughout the house needs repairs. “The lead and bracing that has held the window in place are now starting to give way.”

The furnace needs work, or replacing. Finding people to do historic work, along with material costs, are other challenges. Some of that faux finish on doors, arches and siding are “starting to come undone,” she said. In that era, artisans painted soft woods such as fir to appear as having finer “oak” wood grain.

The “Mother’s Day Soiree” fundraiser, at 1923 W. First Ave., is $55 per session – 12:30-2 p.m. or 2:30-4 p.m. – with each offering a variety of teas, finger sandwiches, scones, desserts, and artwork to purchase. Madison Stoltz, 15, who runs Snak Rabbit, plans to deliver copycat mini royal wedding cakes – elderflower and lemon curd.

Tickets , with only 80 seats total, are online at girlsgonestyled.co . Early reservations can request limited access to a basement with a “speakeasy vibe” and 1889 pool table.

After the first hour, each soiree group gets 30 minutes for a self-guided tour inside. Several local artists, donating 20% of any proceeds, will display pieces inside for purchase, ranging from $25 to $2,450, Bornhoft said.

The free outdoor activities are noon to 5 p.m., including giant lawn games and visits with Nigerian dwarf goats inside the property’s walled “secret garden.” People can buy from outdoor food and beverage vendors, such as a “bubbly bar” and Nothing Bundt Cakes. Green Bluff’s Roosting Dairy Goats is set to bring the Nigerian animals.

Megan Duvall, city of Spokane historic preservation officer, said she was happy to hear that people are backing the house’s preservation. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places and Spokane Register of Historic Places.

“The Loewenberg-Roberts house is probably Spokane’s best example of the Queen Anne style – complete with a granite first floor, decorative spindle work in the gable ends and an impressive turret,” Duvall said in an email.

“It is one of our oldest homes in Spokane. Mary Moltke has poured her heart and soul into keeping the house open to the public in different forms.”

Bornhoft said she and Henry wanted to help Moltke after learning how much work the house needs.

“We call ourselves citizen preservationists, trying to help preserve Spokane and make people understand the value of our history, because these houses are treasures,” Bornhoft said.

A home restoration contractor and childhood friend of Bornhoft, Henry lives in the Dillingham house near the mansion. Girls Gone Styled began a year and a half ago.

“We’re both very big in the restoration of Spokane historic houses,” Henry said. “This is such an incredible house. Mary has done a great job of keeping it together, which is extremely difficult.”

Bornhoft, also a real estate agent, said another setback for Moltke was that she had a former wedding event planner as a tenant, “who abandoned her during COVID.”

Moltke just hopes upcoming events will pump new life into the property. Other teas, antique-farm vintage shows and children’s parties to view history are being considered. She’s known for Halloween parties. People can find events at girlsgonestyled.co or ejrobertsmansion.com .

“These two lovely ladies are helping me get it up and going again, because I have for, well, let’s say I’m in my mid-70s,” said Moltke, who stays in touch with Roberts descendants. She hopes to display a 1910 dress worn by Mrs. Roberts.

“It’s such a gem for Spokane. I don’t want to just let it fall to rack and ruin.

“We do have open houses quite frequently, so I do look at it as something that the public can enjoy. I just am hoping we can get the kind of finances to keep it going for another 100 years.”

Storms batter Midwest one day after tornado leaves at least 1 dead in Oklahoma

Updated on: May 8, 2024 / 8:24 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Severe storms battered the Midwest on Tuesday, unleashing a curtain of heavy rain, gusty winds and tornadoes throughout the region a day after a deadly twister ripped through a small Oklahoma town and killed at least one person.

Tornadoes were spotted after dark Tuesday in parts of Michigan, Indiana and Ohio, while portions of Illinois, Kentucky and Missouri were also under a tornado watch, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters warned that the storms could stretch late into the night with the possibility of more twisters and large hail.

In southwestern Michigan, two tornadoes blitzed the city of Portage near Kalamazoo. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office said there were "multiple trees down and wires throughout" Portage and nearby Pavilion Township. A Portage city spokesperson said in a statement that there was significant damage to homes and businesses, but no immediate reports of serious injuries. A Kalamazoo County spokesperson told CBS News that about 15 to 20 people were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.

Photos posted to social media showed major damage to a FedEx building in the Portage area.

In a statement to CBS News, a FedEx spokesperson confirmed its facility was damaged, but said there were "no serious injuries."

"We continue to assess the damage, and we are implementing contingency plans to lessen any potential impacts on service," the statement read.

Portage Director of Public Safety Nicholas Armold told CBS News all FedEx employees were accounted for and none had been trapped beneath the wreckage of the building.

More than 20,000 people lost power in the Portage area, Consumers Energy said Tuesday night. The company estimated most would be without power until 10 p.m. on Wednesday.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, Branch, and Cass counties on Tuesday night after the storm brought "large hail up to four inches in diameter and at least two confirmed tornadoes," she said in a statement.

Overall Monday night and early Tuesday, at least 22 tornadoes  were reported  by the National Weather Service across seven states in the Great Plains and Central U.S. The severe weather threat was expected to continue Tuesday night into Wednesday, according to Alex Wilson, meteorologist for The Weather Channel, who reported that Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky were at risk.

The deadly tornado that touched down Monday night in Oklahoma ripped through the 1,000-person town of Barnsdall, about a 40-minute drive north of Tulsa. The National Weather Service there had warned Monday evening that "a large and life-threatening tornado" was headed toward Barnsdall and the nearby town of Bartlesville.

Oklahoma Town Of Barnsdall Hit By Deadly Tornado

It was the second tornado to hit Barnsdall in five weeks — a twister on April 1 with maximum wind speeds of 90 to 100 mph damaged homes and blew down trees and power poles.

Barnsdall Mayor Johnny Kelley said one person was dead while one man was missing after Monday's twister. Authorities launched a secondary search Tuesday morning for the missing man.

"The toughest thing on me as the mayor is this is a small community," Kelley said. "I know 75% to 80% of the people in this town."

At least 30 to 40 homes in the Barnsdall area were damaged Monday night, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

Aerial videos showed several well-built homes reduced to piles of rubble and others with roofs torn off and damaged walls still standing. The powerful twister tossed vehicles, downed power lines and stripped limbs and bark from trees across the town. A 160-acre wax manufacturing facility in the community also sustained heavy damage.

Oklahoma Town Of Barnsdall Hit By Deadly Tornado

First responders rescued about 25 people, including children, from heavily damaged homes where buildings had collapsed on or around them, Kelley said. About a half dozen people suffered injuries, he said.

"We did take a direct hit from a tornado" in Bartlesville, said Kary Fox of the Washington County Emergency Management. "Please stay off the roadways. Stay out of those damaged areas. We're having a lot of difficulty getting in to do assessments to check on people, to see if they've got any injuries because of the traffic congestion."

The Barnsdall Nursing Home said it evacuated residents because a gas leak could not be turned off due to storm damage. It later posted online that all residents were accounted for with no injuries, and they were being taken to other facilities.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, who toured the twister's damage on Tuesday, said it was rated by weather researchers as a violent tornado with wind speeds up to 200 mph. Stitt said he and legislative leaders have agreed to set aside $45 million in this year's budget to help storm-damaged communities.

"Oklahomans are resilient," Stitt said, "and we're going to rebuild."

At the Hampton Inn in Bartlesville, several splintered 2x4s were driven into the south side of the building. Chunks of insulation, twisted metal and other debris were scattered over the hotel's lawn, and vehicles in the parking lot were heavily damaged with smashed-out windows.

Matthew Macedo, who was staying at the hotel, said he was ushered into the hotel laundry room to wait out the storm.

"When the impact occurred, it was incredibly sudden," he said.

The storms tore through Oklahoma as areas including Sulphur and Holdenville were still recovering from a  tornado that killed four and left thousands without power late last month . Both the Plains and Midwest have been hammered by tornadoes this spring.

Oklahoma and Kansas had been under a high-risk weather warning Monday. The last time such a warning was issued was March 31, 2023, when a massive storm system tore through parts of the South and Midwest including Arkansas, Illinois and rural Indiana.

The entire week is looking stormy across the U.S. The eastern U.S. and the South are expected to get the brunt of the bad weather through the rest of the week, including in Indianapolis, Memphis, Nashville, St. Louis and Cincinnati, cities where more than 21 million people live. It should be clear over the weekend.

Oklahoma's State Emergency Operations Center, which coordinates storm response from a bunker near the state capital of Oklahoma City, was still activated from last weekend's deadly storms.

Monte Tucker, a farmer and rancher in the western Oklahoma town of Sweetwater, had spent Monday putting some of his tractors and heavy equipment in barns to protect them from hail. He said he let his neighbors know they could come to his house if the weather got dangerous.

"We built a house 10 years ago, and my stubborn wife put her foot down and made sure we built a safe room," Tucker said. He said the entire ground-level room is built with reinforced concrete walls.

Oklahoma and Kansas were under a high-risk weather warning on Monday. Bill Bunting, deputy director of the Storm Prediction Center, said such a warning from the center is not something seen every day or every spring.

"It's the highest level of threat we can assign," he said.

The last time it was issued was March 31, 2023, when a massive storm system tore through parts of the South and Midwest including Arkansas, Illinois and rural Indiana.

The increased risk is due to an unusual confluence: Winds gusting up to around 75 mph were blasting through Colorado's populated Front Range region, including the Denver area, on Monday.

The winds were being created by a low pressure system north of Colorado that was also pulling up moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, fueling the risk of severe weather on the Plains, according to the National Weather Service's Denver-area office.

Colorado wasn't at risk of tornadoes or thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, floodwaters in the Houston area began receding Monday after days of heavy rain in southeastern Texas left neighborhoods flooded and led to hundreds of high-water rescues.
