How To Get A Family Visa In Oman

The family joining visa is granted to an expatriate employee’s spouse and children, below 21 years. It is granted also to a foreign wife of an Omani citizen at his request and according to a Ministry of Interior’s certificate validating their marriage. The visa shall be as follows:

• Valid for two years from the date of stamping on the holder’s passport.
• Multi-entry visa.

 Requirements

• The expatriate spouse must be in a senior job according to the GCC standards.
• Living in a residence rented in their name or in the name of their employer.
• Paid a monthly salary of not be less than RO 600.
• For an Omani national’s foreign wife a copy of the marriage certificate authenticated by their respective country’s embassy, Oman Ministry o f Foreign Affairs, and a Ministry of Interior’s certificate validating their marriage.

Application on the electronic form available on the Royal Oman Police website, and signed by the employer or an authorized signatory. The application shall be typed in Arabic for Arab nationals, and in English for non-Arabs, and shall enclose the following documents:

• Two photographs ( 6X4 ) cm.
• Copy of the foreigner’s passport, valid for not less than 6 months.
• Copy of the specimen signature sheet of the authorized signatories issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, for the private sector.
• Original and copy of a medical certificate approved by the Ministry of Health FOR adults coming from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Syria and Nepal.
• Copy of a form approved by the Ministry of Manpower indicating the employee’s details including their job title and salary, or a bank statement of the monthly salary transfers for not less than six months.
• Where the foreign employee wants to bring in their spouse, copy of the marriage certificate authenticated by Oman Ministry of foreign Affairs.
• Copy of the residential lease agreement or document confirming his place of residence.
• With regard to the wife of an Omani national, copy of the Ministry of Interior’s approval, the authenticated marriage certificate and copy of the valid identity card.

Family visa in Oman is given to the spouses of residents of Oman and their children below 21 years. Family visa is given on the request by the sponsor. It is valid for two years from the date of issue. Fee for the application of visa is OMR 20.

Oman visitor visa is issued to third country nationals who wish to travel to the country for merely tourism purposes. It is issued for single entrance and visits not exceeding one month from the date of entry. The tourist visa is valid for use throughout a period of six months.

Oman business visa is issued to third country citizens who would like to visit the country  with the purpose of conducting commercial activities, holding business meetings or engaging in related activities. Type D (Long-term Stay) Visa

“Student Visa” is issued to foreign citizens who wish to travel to Oman with the mere purpose of enrolling in an education institution. Its holder has the right to enter the country on multiple terms and  for periods ranging from one to two years since the official date of entry.

“Employment Visa” is issued for employment purposes upon the official request of the sponsor/employer. Moreover, “Investor Resident Visa” is applicable for foreigners who seek to venture on investments in Oman. The investments are subject to verification by the concerned authorities. • to the spouse or children of a foreigner who resides in Oman and
• foreign spouse or children of an Omani national at his request.

The children must be younger than 21 years old. The status of marriage shall be certified by the Ministry of Interior.

Oman Transit Visa

Oman transit visa is issued by the competent authorities for airport transits at Oman’s international zone. It enables single-entry to Oman within maximum 72 hours.  The traveler must have a travel document or passport that is valid for minimum six months after the travel dates, travel tickets and a visa if necessary for the next destination.

General Requirements to Apply for Oman Visa

• A passport or travel document with at minimum two blank pages, valid for at least six months and for at least 90 days after the end of travel. Copy of the first page including personal data and previous visas if obtained.
• Completed and signed visa application form along with two biometric photo that is not older than 6 months.
• Proof of travel with confirmed both-way tickets.
• Bank account details proving that the passenger can sufficiently fund his/her travel.
• It is important that the applicant does not pose any threat to the public health, security, morals, or the national economy. Hence, the applicant should not be accused or convicted of a crime.
• Evidence of occupation in the form of certified documents through employer letter, student certificate, document of registration or demonstration of pension funds.
• Accommodation details through an invitation letter or proof of your hotel reservation throughout your stay.
• Documentation of travel health insurance that is valid within the territory of Oman and throughout the traveler’s term of stay.

• Employment contract (original certificate of employment indicating the position in the company and the salary)
• Bank account statement of the past 6 months
• Approval letter of leave from employer
• Income Tax Return (ITR)

Self-employed:

• Proof of business license (company registration)

• Documentation of University enrollment
• No-objection certificate from school management
• Pension statement documenting the past 6 months

  Unemployed:

• Proof of financial resources is nevertheless required
• If the person is not able to finance his/her own expenses, proof of a sponsor is mandatory.

What is Visa Sponsorship for Oman?

Students or unemployed/retired people who are not in a position to cover their own travel expenses will need to demonstrate support from a sponsor who will borne the full costs. The sponsor is entitled to certain requirements including submission of an official letter to declare that he or she will be responsible for the visitor throughout the entire course of the trip. Also, he/she must mention the relationship with the visitor since only first grade relatives can fulfill this position.

Home to stunning dive sites, intriguing archeological ruins, historic forts and souqs (markets) and some of the region’s best hiking trails, Oman promises an unforgettable travel experience. Visas to visit this complex, storied land are easy to obtain, but there's some red tape to navigate compared to its Gulf neighbors.

Many people visit Oman after spending a few days in Dubai in the neighboring United Arab Emirates, but you may feel a bit overwhelmed by the visa process for Oman. Whether you plan to relax on the beach, explore history Muscat, or go hiking in the Hajar Mountains, here’s a guide to the latest visa requirements for this fascinating desert sultanate.

Who needs a visa to visit Oman?

Citizens of 103 countries – including the US, Canada, the UK, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and most EU and EEA nations – can visit Oman without a visa, so long as the stay does not exceed 14 days. See the website of the Foreign Ministry of Oman for a full list of countries approved for visa-free travel.

Citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, which includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, can travel to Oman completely visa-free. If you're unsure about the rules for your nationality, check the website of the Royal Oman Police – the body responsible for overseeing Oman's immigration system.

All visa-exempt visitors need to present evidence of confirmed hotel bookings for the entire duration of their stay, plus health insurance and a return travel ticket leaving Oman within the visa-free period. Your passport should also be valid for at least six months after the date you arrive in Oman.

Additional requirements for visa-free travel

Citizens of some countries on the approved list, such as Mexico, India and Jordan, can only visit Oman without a visa if they hold a valid Schengen Area visa or a valid visa for the US, Canada, Australia, UK or Japan (or are legally resident in one of these countries). Consult the Royal Oman Police website for more information.

How to stay in Oman longer than 14 days

Apart from visitors from GCC countries, all travelers require a tourist visa to enter Oman if they intend to stay in the country for more than 14 days. Applications for all types of tourist visas must be made online on the official Oman e-visa website before arriving in Oman. 

Visas for tourists who are GCC residents

Visitors who are resident in the GCC but hold different citizenship can apply for a Resident Tourist Visa so long as they are employed in a profession on Oman's approved list (or accompanied by someone in one of those professions). These visas cost OR5 (US$13) and allow stays in Oman of up to 28 days.

Applications must be made via the official Oman e-visa website, and your GCC residence visa must be valid for at least six months after entry into Oman.

Visa for tourists who are not GCC residents

Tourists who are not residents in a GCC country who want to visit Oman for more than 14 days will need to apply online for an Unsponsored Visit Visa. There are various types of Unsponsored Visit Visas, valid for tourism, business travel or transiting through the country, and each has its own rules and conditions.

It's best to check which class of visa you’re eligible to apply for and the visa conditions via the visa eligibility tool on the official Royal Oman Police website. 

Visas for 30-day stays in Oman

Citizens of 72 countries – including the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Japan, and many European countries – can apply for a 26B Tourist Visit Visa, a single-entry visa that allows you to stay in Oman for 30 days. This costs OR20 (US$52), and applications must be made on the official website where a full list of eligible nationalities is available.

The same nationalities can also apply for the 36B Tourist Visit Visa, a long-term, multiple-entry visa that is valid for one year and allows a maximum stay of 30 days in Oman for each visit. It costs OR50 (US$130).

Other classes of Tourist Visit Visas

Citizens from other countries who have a valid Schengen Area visa or a valid visa for the US, UK, Canada, Australia or Japan may be eligible to apply for a single-entry 26M Tourist Visit Visa for OR20 (US$52), or a one-year multiple-entry 36M Tourist Visit Visa for OR50 (US$130). The list of approved countries includes India, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, Maldives, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

How to visit Oman from Dubai

Travelers who fulfill the conditions for visa-exempt entry into Oman and have a valid tourist visa for Dubai can apply for a Type 21 Dubai/Oman Common Visa (also called the Dubai/Oman Joint Visa). This free single-entry visa allows a stay of up to 21 days in Oman and is not extendable. It is only valid if you enter Oman directly from Dubai (and not from any other emirate in the UAE).

You can apply for this visa through the Consulate General of the Sultanate of Oman in Dubai. To qualify for this class of visa, your Dubai tourist visa must have at least 21 days validity remaining on the date you enter Oman.

Other visa options for Oman

Five and 10-year multiple-entry visas are available for US diplomatic passport holders and US citizens who are visiting Oman to attend a training course or as a member of an international organization registered in Oman, such as the World Health Organization. To apply, you’ll need to submit additional documents detailing the purpose of your visit.

Applying for a visa for Oman

When applying for an Omani visa via the official e-visa portal , ensure your passport is valid for at least six months after the date you plan to enter Oman. You will need to submit a photograph, a copy of your passport, a hotel booking, and confirmed flight tickets confirming the dates of your entry and departure from Oman.

Visa processing times can vary depending on the type of visa – expect the process to take anything from 24 hours to a few days. To ensure that your visa is authorized before you check in for your flight, apply online at least four days in advance of your trip.

Even if you intend to drive to Oman from Dubai and enter through a land border, it's wise to apply online for the right type of visa before you travel. Hard copy application forms allowing you to apply for an Omani visa on arrival may be available at the border, but this system is being phased out, and wait times can be several hours.

Overstays and visa extensions for Oman

If you overstay your visa, a fine of OR10 (US$26) applies for every day beyond the term allowed on your visa, and you may have trouble entering Oman in future. Single-entry tourist visas can be extended for another 30 days, multiple-entry tourist visas cannot be extended – you can apply for a visa extension on the official e-visa portal.

Dubai: Family members of expatriates currently on a visit visa in Oman will be allowed to convert their visas to a family visa, according to Omani media reports.

“It is possible, in the current situation, to transfer from visit visas to family visas without the person required to exit the country. The request can be made directly at the Directorate General of Passports and Residence,” the Royal Oman Police said in reply to a question if there is a need to travel outside the country to get the visit visa converted into a family visa.

“The Family Joining Visa is granted to the wife of the foreigner who is a resident in Oman, and also to his children within the age limit. It’s also granted to a foreign wife of an Omani national at his request and subject to a certificate from the authority concerned confirming the status of the marriage.”

Description.

It is granted at the request and on the responsibility of an employer to a foreigner who is coming to Oman for employment. Unless the foreigner is invited by a government organization a labour permit from the Ministry of Manpower is needed.

• The visa is valid for staying in the country for 2 years as of the date of stamping on the passport.
• Multi-entry visa.

Requirements

• The sponsor must be a local one with full legal competence. It's the responsibility of the sponsor to validate their own information.
• The person for whom the work visa is requested shall not be below 21.
• They shall be of the same gender as mentioned in the labour permit, issued by the Ministry of Manpower.
• The occupation mentioned in the visa application shall be the same as in the labour permit.

Application on the electronic form available on the Royal Oman Police website, and signed by the employer or an authorized signatory. The application shall be typed in Arabic for Arab nationals, and in English for non-Arabs, and shall enclose the following documents:

• Two photographs ( 6X4 ) cm.
• Copy of the foreigner's passport, valid for not less than 6 months.
• The Ministry of Manpower's labour permit and copy thereof for every individual application.
• The original and copy of the medical certificate for nationals of certain countries: India, Pakistan, Philippine, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Syria and Nepal. The certificate is to be attested by the Ministry of Health.
• Copy of approval of the relevant organization for certain occupations: teaching, religious, media, and medical occupations etc.
• Letter from the Ministry of Manpower for certain occupations, like engineers.
• Where the foreigner worked in Oman and has not yet completed two years of their last departure, a release letter from the previous employer and approved by the Directorate General of Passports and Residence is required.

Exceptional Documents

• Where the application is for the transfer of sponsorship, a release letter from the previous sponsor and approved by the Ministry of Manpower is required. Offenses including delay fines must be settled.
• For some nationalities or some categories special permits are needed, eg for Philippine housemaids a permit is needed from the Embassy of Philippine and attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
• Twenty (20) Omani Rials.
• N.B. A fine of RO 50 per month will be charged for delay in the renewal.

Requirements for Family Joining and Family Residence Visa in Oman

Expats who want to bring their families into Oman, you can apply for a residence visa for them. The type of visa is called a “Family Joining Visa” and this is valid for 2 years. In this post we share some information how you can apply for this type of visa.

Leaving your family and working in a foreign land might sound exciting, but it’s not so. After a while, you might become homesick and miss your family. While you can go and meet your family and friends on leave, you get a vacation only once a year.

This is why most expatriates in Oman bring their families through the family residency visa. The visa is granted to wife of the expatriate and his kids below 21 years of age. A foreign wife of an Oman resident is also eligible for a family residence visa, once the Ministry of Interior confirms the marriage.

Complete Process of Family Joining & Family Residence Visa in Oman

According to an update on September 2013, any expatriate who plans to bring his family in Oman should earn at least OMR 600 monthly.

A. Validation of Family Residence Visa

The family visa is granted only after the request of an Omani resident sponsor. The visa

• Is valid for use within six months of issue
• Is valid for two years
• Costs OMR 20
• Costs additional OMR 50 for non-registration or late renewal

B. Conditions for Visa

The local sponsor should have the full legal capacity and will be held responsible for the residents under the family residency visa. The following requirements should be met

• For children under the family visa, they should be less than 21 years of age. Note that their visa expires when they reach 21 years
• Any siblings covered under the family visa should be less than 18 years of age
• The family visa expires when the local sponsor’s visa expires

C. Enclosures

When you are applying for the visa, you need to do it online through the website portal. The application also needs to be endorsed and stamped by the local sponsor and typed in Arabic (for Arab nationals) or English (for non-Arab citizens). Additionally, it should also include the following:

• Two photographs sized 4×6 cm each
• Copy of the foreigner’s (the one who is applying for the visa) passport
• Copy of passport and residence of the local sponsor or the expatriate, who wants his family to join
• The standard undertaking form. The local sponsor and his employee should endorse the way
• Proof of family relationship between the foreign resident and the visa applicant(s)
• In case of a foreign spouse, a copy of marriage certificate, which should be endorsed by her country’s embassy as well as Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs
• Copy of specimen signature for concerned signatories issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry
• Copy of personal identity card for signature verification
• A medical fitness certificate issued by Ministry of Health for Bangladesh, Egypt, Ethiopia India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines, Sudan, Syria, Sri Lanka
• In case the sponsor is not presenting the application, the representative should be Omani, and have written authorization from the Directorate General of Passport and Residence
• In case of visa application for a foreign spouse, a certificate from the Ministry of Interior should be enclosed confirming the status of the marriage

Being able to fly & make your family live with you in Oman is a great privilege. However, without knowledge on how to apply for a family joining visa can cause problems & waste a lot of time. Having this in mind would make your application for a family residence visa at ease.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

COVID-19 Requirements: There are no COVID-related entry requirements for U.S. citizens.

Please visit the  Embassy of Oman website  for the most current visa information.

Requirements for Entry:

• Passport valid for at least six months

Tourist Visas: 

• U.S. citizens should apply for tourist visas in advance via the  Royal Oman Police E-Visa website . Tourist visas are also available upon arrival at airports and land crossings.
• Visas are issued at Mazoonah and Sarfait (Oman-Yemen land borders) on a case-by-case basis.
• The current list of visa types and a schedule of fees are available at the  Royal Oman Police website .
• Have proof of adequate funds and an onward/return ticket.

Penalties for expired passports or visas include fines and/or imprisonment.

Avoid Travel to Yemen:  We strongly advise U.S. citizens against travel to Yemen. Crossing the Yemen-Oman border can be dangerous, and U.S. citizens who do so are routinely detained by Omani authorities. The Department of State and U.S. embassies abroad will not facilitate entry of U.S. citizens into Yemen. Oman does not recognize dual nationality. Omani authorities may confiscate your U.S. passport if you have Oman/U.S. dual nationality. Should this happen, contact the U.S. Embassy. This does not constitute loss of U.S. citizenship.

Children of Omani fathers automatically acquire Omani citizenship at birth and must enter and exit Oman on their Omani passports.

Omani/U.S. dual nationals are subject to all Omani laws, including those placing special obligations on citizens of Oman.

Expect considerable delays if your U.S. passport is lost or stolen. The Royal Oman Police require entry verification upon departure. If your passport containing your entry stamp is lost or stolen, a police report may be required to exit Oman using a replacement passport. For further details, see the  Royal Oman Police website .

Yellow fever vaccinations are required if you are coming from a country with yellow fever outbreaks.

Some HIV/AIDS entry restrictions exist for visitors and foreign residents of Oman. HIV/AIDS testing is required upon arrival for people on work or immigrant visas. Oman does not accept U.S. HIV/AIDS testing. Verify this information with the  Embassy of Oman  before traveling.

Customs Regulations:

• Pornographic materials and firearms are prohibited.
• Muslim travelers are forbidden to bring in alcohol. Oman does not require visitors to identify with a religion.
• Non-Muslim travelers can bring in two bottles of alcohol bought at a duty-free shop.

Safety and Security

Terrorism:  Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad.  Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds.  Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as: 

• High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.) 
• Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists 
• Places of worship 
• Schools 
• Parks 
• Shopping malls and markets 
• Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

MARAD Report:  According to the United States Maritime Administration (MARAD), U.S. flag vessels in the Gulf of Oman, North Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, and the Bab el Mandeb regions face an elevated risk of attacks by violent extremists.

Crime : There is minimal street crime in Oman, and violent crime is rare.

Victims of Crime:  U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance. Report crimes to the local police at 9999.  Emergency hotlines are mostly Arabic-speaking.  The U.S. Embassy has received reports from U.S. citizens who were unable to receive assistance due to language barriers.  Contact the U.S. Embassy at +968 2464-3400.  Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.

• Help you find appropriate medical care
• Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
• Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
• Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion

• Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
• Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
• Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance.  The law in Oman does not specifically address domestic violence.  However, charges may be brought under other statutes.  Victims of domestic violence may file a complaint with the police, and reports indicate that police respond promptly and professionally.  The government operates a domestic violence hotline and a shelter for victims.

Tourism : The tourism industry is generally well-regulated and rules with regard to best practices and safety inspections are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage, and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance . 

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.  Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the U.S., regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification : If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. Omani authorities typically do not permit foreigners accused of crimes to leave the country while cases are open.

Carry your passport at all times, or you could be detained.

It is illegal to photograph certain buildings.

Alcohol and Drugs:  You may be arrested for possession of alcohol or driving under the influence. Drinking is permitted in some international hotels, bars, homes, and some restaurants.

Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in illegal drugs include lengthy jail sentences and heavy fines.  Some prescription medications, such as narcotics, available in the United States may be illegal in Oman.  Travelers should check the Oman Ministry of Health’s Medications and Travel webpage before importing prescription medications.

Motor Vehicle Violations:  Traffic laws are strictly enforced and carry heavy penalties. Remote traffic cameras are extensively used to monitor speeding and stop light infractions.

Immigration officials, airports and other ports of entry and exit have ready access to information on traffic offenses, and violators cannot depart Oman unless all fines have been paid in full.

Personal Defamation Charges:

• Using vulgar language or hand gestures can lead to personal defamation charges. 
• An accusation alone, regardless of who files it, can initiate a legal process.
• U.S. citizens can usually resolve these cases with a formal apology and payment of damages to the aggrieved party.

Cultural Heritage Items:  To avoid prosecution, check first with Omani authorities before taking “cultural heritage items” such as archaeological artifacts, meteorites, or stones. 

Notary Services:  All foreign public documents (Birth, Marriage, Death, Divorce, academic records, etc.) need to be apostilled for use in Oman. The U.S. Embassy in Oman cannot apostille any documents issued in the U.S. See  our website  for designated authorities in the United States. That can issue an apostille.

Employment in Oman:  Although a common practice, it is illegal for Omani employers to retain your passport. Such retention could grant undue leverage to your employer in case of a dispute. U.S. passports are the property of the U.S. government.

The U.S. Embassy cannot intervene in labor disputes. At the beginning of any employment, obtain a contract that clearly states the terms of employment. Try to resolve disputes privately with your employer. If this fails, consult our  list of lawyers .

Dress Code : Be sensitive to Islamic culture and do not wear sleeveless shirts, halter-tops, or shorts. Only wear athletic clothing in public when engaged in sports activities.

Currency : U.S. bills printed before 2006 are often not accepted. Local currency is easily available from ATMs or currency exchange counters.

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  Consensual same-sex sexual conduct is illegal and subject to a jail term of six months to three years. See our  LGBTQI+ Travel Information page  and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities:  The law in Oman prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, intellectual, or mental disabilities   Expect accessibility to be limited in older buildings (including government buildings and schools), public transportation, and general infrastructure, and more common in newer medical facilities and public buildings in cities. Outside of urban areas, access is greatly reduced.  Handicapped parking spaces are scarce.

COVID-19 Testing:   For general PCR testing and exiting Oman, various health clinics in Oman offer PCR tests with results within 72 hours as well as 24-hour and 3–6-hour options.  PCR tests are at the expense of the individual/traveler.  Prices vary by clinic and range from 20 – 40 OMR; surcharges often apply for expedited result processing within 24 hours or less.  Drive up testing, walk-in tests, and tests by appointment are all available in Oman.  Test result delivery varies by clinic: e-mail, text, and physical message are commonly used to communicate results.

COVID-19 Vaccines:   The COVID-19 vaccine is available for U.S. citizens to receive in Oman. Please refer to the  Omani Ministry of Health  for additional information on vaccination registration.

For emergency services in Oman, dial 9999.  Emergency hotlines are mostly Arabic-speaking.  The U.S. Embassy has received reports from U.S. citizens who were unable to receive assistance due to language barriers.

Response times for ambulance services vary.  Injured or seriously ill travelers should take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

Modern medical facilities and Western-style pharmacies are available. Local medical treatment varies from average to inadequate, depending on location.

Hospital emergency treatment is available.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas.  Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See  our webpage  for more information on insurance overseas.  Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the Government of Oman to ensure the medication is legal in Oman.

Vaccinations : Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions:  Road conditions in cities and along major highways are good. Road conditions in rural areas range from good to poor. During rare instances of rain, roads are prone to flash flooding.

Travel between cities can be dangerous due to poor lighting, wandering livestock, and speeding drivers.

Public Transportation:  Public transportation is generally safe, although vehicles may swerve to pick up passengers without warning.

Traffic Violations:

The following traffic violations may result in jail sentences, fines, and/or deportation:

• driving without a license
• running a red light
• driving under the influence of alcohol
• failure to wear a seat belt
• talking on cell phones while driving (hands-free technology is allowed)
• excessive speeding or overtaking another vehicle
• failure to maintain a clean car

When involved in a traffic violation, cooperate with police officers and do not attempt to negotiate payment.

If you are involved in a traffic accident that involves injuries, death, or material damage to vehicles, do not move your vehicle until the police give you permission. Moving your car may be interpreted as an admission of guilt. For minor traffic accidents with no damage or injuries, you may move your vehicle to the side of the road.

Traffic Guidelines:

• Traffic circles are common. The driver already in the circle always has priority.
• Drivers flashing high beams are signaling that they want to pass.
• Do not turn right on a red traffic signal.

Driving License Requirements:

• Short-term visitors with a U.S. driver’s license may drive rental vehicles, but not privately registered cars.
• Residents must have an Omani driver's license.
• To obtain an Omani license, you must take a vision test and either have a U.S. license (with proof of being licensed for at least two years) or take a driving test.

Car Insurance:

• Insure rental cars against death, injury, and loss or damage.

Residents may insure their vehicles outside the Sultanate; however, third party liability insurance must be purchased locally.  For all traffic-related emergencies, call the Royal Oman Police at 9999. Have an Arabic speaker call when giving directions to a location, since English-speaking operators are not always available.

Family Visa For Oman is one of the most popular types of visas for people who would like to move and live in Oman. However getting a visa for an entire family is not as easy as we might imagine.

First, you need to know and understand which type of Family Visa (for example: Father, Mother or Wife) you should apply for and what kind of requirements you will need to fulfill.

Oman is the only country in the GCC who offers a Family Visa for children and parents which includes sons and daughters up to 18 years old and their spouses, while all other countries allow family visas only for wives.

The father of the main applicant or his wife can also apply for a Family Visa which includes spouses and children under 18 years old.

The visa should be as follows:

• Valid for two years from the date of stamping on the holder’s passport.
• Multi-entry visa.

But of course, there are requirements to be met:

• The expatriate spouse must be in a senior job according to the GCC standards
• Living in a residence rented in their name or in the name of their employer
• Paid a monthly salary of not be less than RO 600

Visit, express visa validity can be extended online from July 1

Muscat: Starting July 01, both express and visit visa holders currently stranded in the Sultanate can request for an extension through an online application, according to the Royal Oman Police (ROP).

Speaking to the Observer, a source at the ROP said that the normal visa extension fees would be charged for this service.

"Holders of tourist and express visas can request their visa extension online starting July 1 after paying the fees", he said.

He further said that extending visit visas does not require the person to come to the service center.

"Also, the person need not go to an ROP service center for this. Instead, he or his representative can do it online."

The ROP has extended the expiry dates of visit and express visas by 15 days twice in an effort to enable tourists and visitors those who are currently awaiting their turn to go back to their countries stay in Oman till further notice.

"Visit and express visas of all those who are in the country but are overstaying due to the airport closure, were automatically renewed and extended till June 30," the ROP source said further.

Additionally, all the tourist visas that were issued from March 1, 2020, until August 31, 2020, would be reissued with a new validity period up to March 31, 2021. To obtain this service, the concerned person has to visit any of the ROP centers.

For students of expatriates parents who are studying in their origin country but not possible to come back due to the lockdown can renew their visa online from there itself or parents can do it from here. Various embassies are working towards this cause by getting the details of these students online.

However, those who are studying outside of Oman but not in their origin country and stuck there due to the lockdown need to wait till the international gateways are open and till such time the ROP announces the requirements for their civil status to return to the Sultanate.

Road tripping to Oman: Everything you need to know about driving from Dubai to Muscat

From the documents you need to the fees you’ll have to pay, here's what is required at uae-oman border points.

As the price of flights continues to soar, some weekend getaways are looking increasingly expensive. But with Oman right at the UAE’s doorstep, there’s no need to book a flight if you want to explore Muscat ’s corniche, Jebel Akhdar’s peaks or the turquoise Sea of Oman .

The drive from Dubai to Muscat is a trip of about 450 kilometres, a journey that Google Maps estimates takes four-and-a-half hours. But what do you need to do before you set off, do you have to show any paperwork at the border, how much does it cost and how long does it really take door-to-door?

The National set off to find out for ourselves.

Before you go: Orange card, visas and insurance

There are a few things you need to organise before you embark on a road trip to Oman . Firstly, you’ll need to check that your car insurance covers you to drive in the sultanate. If it does, you can request an “orange card” from your insurer. This is usually free of charge and can be presented as an emailed electronic format or as a physical card – it's worth noting that it's not always orange.

If your insurance does not cover you to drive in Oman, you can purchase temporary insurance at the border crossing; however, this typically covers third-party damage only.

An Oman visa is required to travel to the sultanate and this can be applied for online in advance, or on arrival for eligible nationalities.

Applying online can save time at the border, but make sure to complete the application at least five days in advance. Typical processing times are 24 hours, but it can take longer. If it’s not processed by the time you arrive, you’ll have to apply (and pay again) for an on-arrival visa – a lesson we learnt first-hand – or even worse, be turned back if you’re not eligible for this option.

The visa fee is 5 Omani rials (Dh50) and you can pay in the local currency or by credit card. Check that you have at least six months validity on your passport and empty pages for exit/entry stamps. You may also be asked for your address while in the sultanate, so make sure you know where you are staying.

Leaving the UAE: No photos please

We used the Hatta-Al Wajajah border to leave Dubai for Oman. It’s located 6km along the road from the Hatta Wadi Hub and takes about an hour and 20 minutes to reach from Dubai. Driving on a Friday morning, there was very little traffic, perhaps because the UAE shifting its weekend to start on Saturdays.

Photographs and recording are not allowed at the border point, so keep your phone firmly in your car.

The first part of the exit process is on the UAE side, where you hand over your passport to the official on duty and pay a Dh35 exit fee. You may be asked for proof of car ownership and registration at this point, and if you don’t own the car you are driving, you’ll likely need a letter of consent from the owner that includes their contact details.

The official will give you an “opening file” ticket, and with that in hand, you can continue on to the next checkpoint.

Visa applications to enter Oman

Turn left at the roundabout as you enter the Hatta Border Crossing and you’ll come to a series of cabins, each designated for light vehicles, buses or lorries. More important than the vehicle category is whether or not the cabin has an illuminated green traffic light in front of it, as this indicates that it is in operation.

If you already have your visa, or can travel without one – you can go straight to one of these cabins and hand over your passport. You can check what type of visa you need on the Omani Police website.

If not, you’ll need to park next to the building on the left and go inside to apply for an on-arrival visa. Bring a pen to fill out the application form, then head to the central desks where you submit the completed form along with your passport. The visit visa fee is 5 Omani rials for each person.

Visa complete, drive to one of the occupied cabins where Omani border police will check your documents and direct you to the vehicle inspection point. All car doors need to be opened, including the boot. Officers are thorough, so don't be surprised if they request to look inside any bags, luggage or glove compartments.

When you’re cleared to go, you’ll get a small piece of paper to give to the official in the next booth. Another checkpoint a few kilometres away typically only requires visitors to slow down, and when we reach the final checkpoint once we’re inside the sultanate, there's no one around, so we simply drive slowly through the gates.

On the road to Oman: sights to see and where to fill up

A leisurely journey from Dubai to Muscat took just under five hours, including a stop at a petrol station, a toilet stop and a break for a bite to eat.

The drive isn’t the most exciting in the world, but there are a couple of things worth looking out for on the way. This includes Sharjah Mosque , the largest mosque in the emirate, located just after exit 71, and the mountains of Mleiha, which you'll reach about 40 minutes into the drive. Once you pass into Oman, be on the lookout for roadside camels, and enjoy the impressive backdrop of the Hajar mountains that greet you further down the line.

Take snacks for the journey and plenty of water – once you pass the border crossing, there aren't too many places to stop to refuel. It's also a good idea to refill your tank at the petrol station you'll come across as soon as you cross the Omani border.

Also take note of the speed limits on Omani roads. While locals will tell you that you can do about 10km per hour more than the limit before cameras flash, there’s no official buffer zone, so you are best sticking to the speed that signs display.

Driving to the UAE from Oman by car

We returned to the UAE using the Al Ain border crossing at Khatm Al Shikla and it was a relatively simple journey, similar to the exit procedures.

At the first cabin, Omani officials will want to see passports and also asked for our car registration card before giving us an exit stamp and waving us onwards.

Entry into the UAE includes a passport check from Emirati officials and a second checkpoint where each passenger undergoes what seemed to be an EDE scan; there's no need to get out of the car for this.

A huge scanning machine is in operation for vehicles. When you drive through this, make sure you don’t exceed more than 5 kilometres per hour. Afterwards, officials may ask you to pull into a parking spot and open the boot for a further inspection, although this is typically a faster process than on the Omani side.

When clear, you can continue to the next window where you hand over a stamped piece of paper, then continue into Al Ain to complete the last 160km to get back to Dubai.
