Magical Fjord Adventure

Organisation was exceptional. Everything ran smoothly. We were a little dissapointed in both the Clarion Hotels, although they looked fancy, the rooms were small and cluttered. The night meal in the dining room at the Clarion Hub was disgusting and overpriced, one meal sent back as it was cold, when it was returned it was inedible. we paid for premium accomodation. these two hotels would not be 3 star in Australia, maybe Europe has different standards. The other hotels were acceptable.

What people love about Oslo to Bergen Tours

Just finished our tour. Everything went smoothly and the staff at Tour Radar were quick to respond when I had a question while traveling. The hotel rooms in Oslo and Bergen were a bit small. I would recommend the upgrade but the locations and breakfasts in both were excellent. Our favorite hotel, by far, was the Kivnes in Balestrand. Just beautiful and right on the fiord. Thank you Tour Radar!

The reviews speak for themselves. See what Nordic Visitor travellers said about their experience with us.

Fantastic trip

An absolutely fantastic trip to a beautiful country.

Excellent tour

The service and communication before the trip was very good, and the tour itself excellent. Hotels were very well-chosen. They were a good standard and ideally situated.

Well-planned itinerary

We found the process for enquiry, booking and recommendations quite easy and very informative. Tour was absolutely great. Well-planned itinerary.

Exceeded expectations

Great choice of accommodation! They exceeded expectations with first-class hotels and more.

Great way to plan a vacation

Nordic Visitor is a great way to plan a vacation to Scandinavia. They offer multiple options in each country, then you can customise as you want by adding a day in a city, or adding excursions. They know all the best options to make available and do a thorough job of preparing every leg of your journey. It was great to have a personal driver meet us at the airport to take us to our hotel in Oslo. Saved lots of concern about navigating public transportation in another country.

Excellent company!

Excellent company to work with! We were able to customise our tour and received detailed information ahead of time so we could make an informed decision about our options. The information packet we recieved ahead of the trip was extremely detailed and included everything we needed to make our trip go smoothly. The hotels were all outstanding as were all the tours and modes of transportation. Nordic Visitor knows the best places and things to do in Norway and saved us hours of planning and researching. We would highly recommend them for your travel!

This was the most amazing opportunity to experience different parts of the country. We experienced "different seasons" with the changing climate throughout the locations travelled. We experienced the different cultures of city vs. country living. We were able to talk with locals and learn about the history of Norway. It was a packed holiday between the driving, tours and exploring, but we felt we got a full immersive opportunity by choosing this package.

The itinerary was perfect

We booked the Best of Norway Fjords Express Tour. The itinerary was perfect and well-organised. All accommodations were very close to train stations or cruise ports. The transfers involved minimal wait time between bus and train on the same day. The accommodation, transportation and tours would have been very difficult to book on our own. Nordic Visitor did a great job putting everything together.

Very pleased

We were very pleased with all the arrangements and information. We were able to follow all the instructions easily.

The trip of a lifetime!

This was the trip of a lifetime. Norway is unbelievably beautiful and this trip with Nordic Visitor was amazing! The fjords were spectacular and the Norwegian towns and landscapes were charming. Our small group of 14 (plus the driver and tour guide) was perfect. Our group included people from the USA, Hong Kong and Australia, and all were very friendly and interesting. A perfect tour!

Well-organised

From start to finish, well organised. Good communication pre-travel and all reservations on the trip went smoothly.

Very well-executed

All organised items were very well-executed and we had no trouble making connections and finding hotels, etc. Nordic Visitor organised accommodation that was very close to transport, where possible, so less chance of us getting lost.

FJORDS NORWAY - Norway in a Nutshell Fjord Cruise leaving the Aurlandsfjord and entering the Nærøyfjord.

Oslo and the Oslofjord

FJORDS NORWAY - Oslo and the Oslofjord with the Operahouse, Munch Museum and Barcode

Oslo – one of Lonely Planet’s Top Ten Cities in 2018, the capital in Norway and the city of Edvard Munch´s “The Scream”, has it´s own beautiful fjord. The Oslofjord is not so narrow as the fjords in western Norway. But with it´s many islands and the easy access from the city center, it is a great fjord to experience. Popular things to do are fjord-cruise, guided kayak tours, rib-boat and swimming in the fjord.

The Ekeberg Park is the place where Edvard Munch was inspired to paint the world famous “The Scream” . This is close to Ekebergparken Sculpture Park , and is really a must place to visit when you are in Oslo. You can see many of Edvard Munch`s paintings at the National Museum or the Munch Museum , both museums are brand new and opened in the summer 2022.

Frognerseteren Restaurant is located just a few hundred meters above Holmenkollen Ski Jump. From there, there is a fantastic view over Oslo and the Oslofjord. Have we forgotten to mention anything? Yes, of course. There are a million reasons to Visit Oslo. You should also visit the Kon-Tiki Museum and the Vigeland Sculpture Park.  And of course, don´t forget the shopping . Oslo is a “small big city” surrounded by beautiful nature and is really worth a visit. And it is a “hub” to other adventures in Norway.

Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord – What to See and Do

FJORDS NORWAY - The UNESCO Protected Nærøyfjord

Flåm, Aurland and Gudvangen are perfect starting points for experiences in and around the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord, two of the world’s most beautiful and dramatic fjords. On 14 July 2005, the Nærøyfjord together with the Geirangerfjord became part of our common UNESCO’s world heritage .

From Flåm you can take part in a fjord safari or a fjord cruise on the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord. You can take this fjord cruise as a round trip (both ways) or one way combined with bus between Flåm and Gudvangen. See the great view from Stegastein viewpoint , 650 meters above Aurland . Taste the local goat’s cheese in Undredal or in Skjerdal , two villages by the Aurlandsfjord.

Flåm Railway is the train journey from mountain to fjord, perhaps the most beautiful railway in the world. You can combine this train journey with cycling along Rallarvegen which goes from the high mountains via Flåmsdalen Valley to Flåm. Aurlandsdalen Valley is one of Norway’s most popular hikes. The lower part of Aurlandsdalen, which is also the most popular, starts from Østerbø and ends at Vassbygdi in Aurland.

The Flåm Valley is a beautiful adventure. The valley between Myrdal (866.8 masl) and Flåm by the Aurlandsfjord is 18 kilometer long. The valley is narrow and the mountains are steep, and there are waterfalls and rivers wherever you turn around. Flåm Valley is a great place for hiking and biking . Flåm Zipline sends you off at over 100 kilometers per hour, you are just hanging in a thin steel wire high above the valley.

By the Nærøyfjord, we have the small villages of Gudvangen , Bakka, Styvi and Dyrdal. Styvi is the only place without permanent inhabitants during the winter, and is together with Dyrdal without road connection. Gudvangen is one of two ports where the iconic ferry trip along the inner part of the Sognefjord departs and arrives. Visit the Viking village Njardarheimr in Gudvangen and experience the history and culture of the Viking Age.

The Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord are both part of the 204 kilometer long Sognefjord which is located in the northern part of the county of Vestland, in the middle of Western Norway.

The Norway Guide

Fjords Near Bergen: The 3 Most Incredible Fjords Close to Bergen, Norway

Bergen is by far the most popular city to visit if you’re coming to Norway to see the majestic fjords in all their glory, and it’s a great base for a fjord exploration journey.

However, the photogenic fjords you’ve seen in photos are not within Bergen themselves, so let’s take a closer look at the fjords near Bergen, how to get to them, and which you should focus on visiting!

There is technically small fjords all around Bergen (they’re not that impressive), but most tourists who want to see a fjord from Bergen visit either Sognefjord, Osterfjorden or Hardangerfjord, all three reachable within a day trip from Bergen.

Sognefjorden is one of the fjords near Bergen.

All of these three fjords can be visited on a day trip where you leave in the morning, see the fjord, then return to Bergen in the evening. It’s also possible (and even recommended) to book a night at a hotel in the fjord region to further your experience.

With that said, let’s take a closer look at the different fjords near Bergen and how to visit them!

1) Sognefjord / Sognefjorden

The Sognefjord is probably the most well-known Norwegian fjord, and it lies in the heart of the fjord region of Norway. It’s absolutely the best choice if you’re after seeing an idyllic fjord like in the beautiful photos!

Cruise ships in Geiranger

There are plenty of amazing places to visit when you’re coming from Bergen to see the Sognefjord. Some places I highly recommend to stop at are:

  • Vik : Vik has an incredible 3 stave churches, including the famous Hopperstad Stave Church.
  • Balestrand : The small town of Balestrand is most known for the St. Olaf’s Church, but it’s a cozy and chill town where you can really sit back and just relax. The amazing fjord view is seem from the entire town!
  • Kaupanger : Kaupanger is a small town that offers an incredible view of the Sognefjord. It has it’s own stave church and many incredible hiking opportunities.
  • Flåm : Flåm is one of Norway’s most popular tourist destinations, and it lies at one of the Sognefjord’s most beautiful areas. I recommend riding the Flåmbanen (Flåm train line), but it’s also an incredible visit by car.
  • Stegastein View Point : Stegastein View Point is one of the very best places to look down at the Sognefjord. The view point itself is located 650 meters above the fjord, and the view is simply otherworldly! You can easily get there by car or bus. Read more about Stegastein View Point .

Stegastein view point

In addition to those mentioned above, there’s dozens of other small towns and places to stop to just enjoy the amazing fjord. If you’re feeling adventurous, just rent a car an explore the names on the map along the fjord, and you’re guaranteed to have a great time.

How to get to Sognefjord from Bergen : There are daily your buses as well as ferries that take you from Bergen to the Sognefjord. Driving takes around 2.5 to 4 hours depending on which town you want to visit.

Sognefjorden

2) Osterfjord

Osterfjord is a small fjord that is very close to Bergen. It is much smaller than both the other two options in this article, but the great thing about it is that it’s so close.

You can easily get there from Bergen by bus, and get a small taste of the Norwegian fjords without much hassle.

I would not really recommend Osterfjord if you’re after seeing the spectacular Norwegian fjords, but if you’re in Bergen and want a taste without spending the entire day on a bus, on a ferry or in a car, head to this fjord!

Osterfjord goes around the island called Osterøy, and you can choose to drive along the fjord, or jump on the ferry and get out on the island itself.

Osterfjord. Photo by Frokor / CC BY-SA 3.0.

3) Hardanger fjord / Hardangerfjorden

The Hardanger fjord, also known as Hardangerfjorden, is the first big fjord that is closest to Bergen . You can get to it by driving south for approximately 1.5 hours by car or bus, so it’s easily reachable.

Hardangerfjorden is Norway’s longest fjord, and even scores as high as the world’s third biggest fjord! It goes all the way from the ocean until it hits the Hardangervidda mountain plateau.

Hardangerfjorden

It’s worth noting that Hardangerfjorden has less steep and dramatic mountains rising from the ocean compared to Sognefjorden, but there are other benefits of visiting the Hardanger fjord instead.

Not only can you see the incredible fjord itself, but the area close to the fjord is riddled with amazing sights! Some of the things to check out while visiting Hardangerfjorden is:

  • Trolltunga . Trolltunga is one of Norway’s most famous hikes , and the hike trail starts close to Odda , a Hardanger fjord town. The hike is well-known for being difficult , but it’s a truly unique experience if you’ve got the time and skills to get up there!
  • Vøringsfossen . Vøringsfossen is in my opinion one of Norway’s most incredible waterfalls, and it’s only a short drive away from the fjord. There are viewing platforms that allow you to get a great look at the waterfall, as well as hiking trails to take you all the way down to the bottom. Read more about Vøringsfossen and see photos here !
  • Hardangervidda mountain plateau . Hardangervidda mountain plateau is one of the world’s largest mountain plateaus, and the perfect place to go mountain hiking. You can do lots of different multi-day hikes, or just go to a mountain top in a few hours, depending on what you’re after.
  • Glaciers . Norway’s third biggest glacier Foglefonna is just a short drive away from the Hardanger fjord.
  • Hardanger Bridge . You’ve got to cross the Hardanger Bridge if you’re going to be driving to Hardangervidda, and this bridge offers a unique look down at the fjord. It’s illegal to stop your car on the bridge, but the passengers can indulge in the amazing view while you are going across it!

Hardangerbrua

This all means that the Hardanger fjord is a great destination for both those of you looking for a quick glance at the fjord only a short drive away from Bergen, as well as anyone who’s interesting in some spectacular and unique attractions along the way.

You will drive along the Hardanger fjord if you’re crossing Norway when driving from Bergen to Oslo .

Trolltunga

How to go on a fjord tour from Bergen

It’s generally easy to go on a fjord tour if you have Bergen as a base, seeing as the closest fjord is under one hour away from the city center.

There a plenty of companies that offer various fjord tours, either by car, bus or even ferry. All options are fine, and give an amazing experience, but the prices and experience will vary a lot by your choice.

Let’s take a bit of a closer look at the different ways to explore the fjords near Bergen!

Driving a car to see the fjords from Bergen

The arguably easiest way to see the fjords near Bergen is to rent a car and drive to them. All the fjords have roads alongside them, and it’s generally easy to get to all the fjords mentioned in this article.

So just pick up a rental, plot in your desired destination on the GPS, and head out on the road.

The benefit of using a car to see the fjords near Bergen is that you get a lot of freedom to explore as you wish. Don’t care for that particular view? Just keep driving for a better one!

You are also able to explore more remote and authentic Norwegian towns and villages if you arrive by car, since the towns like Flåm tend to be highly catered towards and affected by tourists.

Avis Rental Car in Lofoten

Fjord cruises from Bergen

If you enjoy being out in the waters, then experiencing the fjords near Bergen from the water is by far the best option.

There are small cruise ships and ferries that depart from Bergen city center daily, and head towards either Sognefjorden or Hardangerfjorden.

So book a seat for you and your travel party, meet up early in the morning for departure, and just kick back and relax while the ship takes you to the fjord!

Below are some amazing Bergen fjord cruise tours!

The benefit to choosing to see the fjords near Bergen from a ship is that you get an absolute unique experience. It’s something special to see the Norwegian coast while driving towards the fjord, as well as experiencing the fjord from the water.

The downside is that this option is a bit expensive, and takes the entire day . You might not be able to go ashore to the small towns along the fjord to experience what life is like there, and spending 9 – 10 hours on a small boat might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

That said, I really enjoy these fjord cruises, because they are truly something special.

Fjord bus tours from Bergen

There are multiple tour guide companies who offer fjord tours from Bergen by bus, and this is a fine option. Just get tickets, hop on the bus, and enjoy the spectacular scenery from the window.

The benefit to this option is that you don’t have to drive yourself, and that you will find it much cheaper than renting a car for the day. Most tour buses make at least 4 or 5 stops for the day at incredible stops that offer amazing views, as well as in cozy towns.

It’s also possible to get on regular public transport buses to see the fjords. That will get you there far cheaper than using a tour guide bus, but it will obviously not have a guide or cater towards tourists.

Dear everyone and DEs,

We had to redo our planning, and now thinking to travel in March.

But our days will get significantly cut down from original ~14days. Now we are looking at 7-8 days.

Travel in family group : 6-8 pax

Timing : March 2024

Not driving, will use public transport

No hiking due to senior 65yo in group

Our main interest are :

1. Top priority is Northern Light

2. Fjord winter scenery

4. Other beautiful scenery sites

5. We are not into city visiting

Our questions are :

1. Can help suggest a trip plan base on above?

2. To catch Northern Light, how many days we should stay in Tromso ?

3. Does it make a different between early March vs Late March - in term of NL? Is there a good chance to catch NL?

4. Is there any particular Fjord that offers more impressive/beautiful sceneries?

Hi - see my post below - may be helpful:

https://www.tripadvisor.in/ShowTopic-g190475-i2314-k14760973-End_of_March_good_or_bad_to_see_the_Northern_Lights-Tromso_Troms_Northern_Norway.html

oslo to bergen fjord tour

In 7-8 days you cannot do fjords, Northern Lights and Lofoten especially without a car (and it is wise to not have a car in your situation). So I think you have to forget Lofoten and come back for Lofoten in the summer.

By the end of March the nights are getting shorter but still dark enough in the middle of the night. End of March is better for scenery but early March slightly better for NL as you have more hours of darkness. If NL is the priority I would maybe opt for early March. So you can arrive in Oslo , do NiN to Bergen (maybe with an overnight in Flåm in early March to have the best scenery in daylight) and then fly to Tromsø and spend the rest of your time there with NL tours every night. You have to work out on paper how much nights this gives you in Tromsø but the usual recommendation is to stay 5 nights for the best chance.

“1. Top priority is Northern Light“

Lofoten is as I regard it mainly a summer destination and consists of several islands connected with bridges making it difficult to move around with public transport.

So drop Lofoten islands

In Tromsø everything is close at hand and there are several options for what to do .

Thanks again Anne, Soph !!

Soph, I will follow the below :

Kato, also thanks very much for your sharing, it seems like you had a great fruitful trip !! will look into it.

To be honest if that was me, I would do this itinerary because I'm quite sure it would be interesting, and hope that I will get NL as a bonus, knowing that this does not give me the best chance for NL. Then again you could stay several nights in Tromso, go on tours every night and still not see the NL. So really manage your priorities. We cannot do that for you.

Last 2 days - we took the cruise ferry to Svolvaer - leaves 130am and reaches 630pm = about 17 hours of a beautiful ride ! The scenery we enjoyed during daytime - from Harstad to Svolvaer - was just spellbinding.

Our original plan was to take the 1030pm ferry back to Tromso - reaching next day 230pm. So only a few hours in Svolvaer itself. That ferry was unfortunately cancelled - so we had to change the program .

We stayed overnight in Svolvaer, bus to Evenes airport next morning (a beautiful 3 hour bus ride in Lofoten !!) and flight back to Tromso via Andenes. This is a small plane and flies pretty low - so the views from the plane were also great ! All in all - our less than 48 hour trip to Lofoten was absolutely worth it.....a pity we could not extend it.

Think about this - the cruise ferry ride itself is one of the most beautiful sea rides we have taken... .. we paid about NOK 4400 for a cabin with window and including breakfast - total for the 2 of us...

.... continuing... if this helps...

2. On our last day in Tromso - after return from Lofoten - we saw the NL again while walking down the streets... this was March 26.

So NLs are definitely see late March..... of course you have to be lucky....

CAUTION: it can get really cccold on these tours.... we were so well protected but still found it very difficult to take the -18C cold ... I guess being from a tropical country like India... this was not surprising.. So pl make sure to invest in good clothing.
