What is involved in the check-in and embarkation process?

First things first, your check-in time! We have staggered check-in times in place to control the number of people in the terminal, helping everyone to get onboard faster. You should only arrive at the cruise terminal at your pre-selected check-in time, as displayed on your eTicket or digital boarding pass. Don’t worry if your friends have a different check-in time; you’ll see them onboard soon. We recommend pre-arranging a meeting location for once you get onboard, such as at one of our many bars or lounges.

When you arrive at the terminal, you’ll be directed to drop off your luggage. Make sure you have luggage tags on your bags with your name, room number and a contact number clearly filled out. After this, you will need to show your eTicket (printed version or saved to your device) or digital boarding pass in the P&O Cruises app to enter the cruise terminal.

Inside the terminal you will be directed to cruise check-in based on the status displayed on your eTicket. At check-in you will undergo a quick health screening, which includes confirming the answers to the Health Declaration. You may also be asked to present proof of your COVID-19 test result.

You will need to show our friendly check-in staff proof of your vaccination status, declare that you have had a negative COVID-19 test result, and verbally complete the pre-cruise health declaration, if you have not already completed it in Cruise Control.

At the check-in counter we’ll also check your passport or government issued ID for domestic cruises, and make sure you’ve completed all of the online check-in components, including your cruise photo, emergency contact details and registering a payment method for your onboard account.

The last step is the security screening process, just like you would experience at an airport. Now it’s time to board the ship and get ready for Sailaway!

Check-in online or at the terminal

Do you have to complete the online check-in before your cruise or can you do this at the terminal?

I’ve completed the online check in for everyone under the booking apart from 1, as their debit card keeps being rejected and without completing this step I cannot get their boarding pass.

Their bank (Nationwide Flex Basic) says they approved the £1 hold and it’s P&O rejecting it.

Not sure what to do apart from wait until we’re at the terminal and get it sorted there. They have no other debit/credit card.

I would ring the P&O freephone number sometime next week and see what they advise .

I had the same issue with Cunard the other week (same IT system). You can check in at the terminal.

What happens about the boarding pass? I don't like the thought of putting my credit card details in online, would much prefer to check in at the terminal like before.

We didn’t have boarding passes as the system refused to process my credit card (even though the card provider had authorised it - usual Carnival IT nonsense). I also couldn’t upload our photographs. The lady at check in did all of this for us and gave us a little slip saying “Clear to Board”. We arrived at terminal building at 1130 and were on the ship at 1150, but this was Cunard. Apparently they aren’t as keen on queues as P&O 😂

Haha

Same here with Cunard. Managed to do it on lap top in the end.

Thanks for the replies all - I’ll give P&O a call but hopefully can get it registered at the terminal.

I’m a little anxious using my own credit card for everyone - would prefer they use their own (I know I sound mean). 🙂

Once onboard just register the other credit cards at reception if they are not able to do it at the terminal.

As in use mine to get it all setup and the boarding pass then change it after? Didn’t know that was possible but sounds good if we can change it afterwards. 🙂

Yeah if it makes things easier for the time being. I can't remember off the top of my head but you can not change cards 24-48hrs maybe 72hrs max before the cruise finishes just encase one declines.

Good idea. Happy to register my card if it can be changed onboard. Would rather get all the boarding passes etc all sorted but this is holding that up. Thanks.

Yes it’s quite straight forward to do. Just as the other poster said you can easily go to

reception and change it as soon as you get onboard. Saves time at check in

I am not doing that online.  Will do it at checkin just like always.

Jean doing the check in on line saves a lot of time and makes check in run so much easier. On Iona we did not even get to sit in the terminal. straight in checked in and then directed to security and on to the ship. The key is to arrive at your allocated time.

And the other bonus about having your boarding pass in advance if you do have to queue is that it means that you can book meals, entertainment etc as soon as you get in the terminal because the last ?6 or 8 (I can't remember!) digits under to barcode on your boarding pass are what you need to access the app to do that.

OK Dai, will do that.  Thanks for advice.  We usually arrive around or just before our allocated time and being Caribbean always helps.

Cruisemeister2002

Our cruise on Ventura in March didn't matter much whether you had a check in time, had a boarding pass or priority boarding as when we got off the coach the baggage and queues were horrendous. all due apparently to Ventura arriving five hours late due to a refit. What they refitted I have no idea, maybe a few carpets ? There were still fitters on board days after we sailed, which instead of being around 5 p.m. ended up at 11.30 p.m. and one of our bags still wasn't at our cabin by the time we went to the MDR at 8.30. Having changed our cabin a day before sailing I had to cut all the labels from our bags and reprint. On arriving at our "New" cabin the cards allowing entry and purchases etc were someone else's, the dining arrangements were wrong, we no table number. Our Celebration Package which I paid £399 for non existent and we ended up with our luggage minus one, plus four of the other persons cases. Which i presume they had been moved also, but either didn't pick up the notification or weren't notified at all. Having said that, I suppose they must have known otherwise we could have ended up four in a bed ?

Online Check In

By JudithAnn1 , September 3, 2023 in P&O Cruises ( UK )

Cool Cruiser

We have tried to check in online this morning for our Ventura cruise to Madeira, the Canary Islands and Lisbon but the system is telling us we will have to check in at the Terminal because we do not have between 3 and 6 months left on our passports at the disembarkation date.  Hopefully we are right in thinking that this cruise is within the EU and, as such, the 4+ months we have left on our passports at the end of it complies with all Immigration rules.

Has anyone else encountered this problem on a similar cruise with P and O, and, if so did they have any trouble checking in at the terminal?  Because of this problem we cannot access our Boarding Time which we believe should be an early one as we are now Caribbean Tier.  Thanks.

We were in a similar position so I emailed P&O to get something in writing, just in case. You should be able to board from 13:00 regardless of the time given in compliance with your tier benefits. We did decide to renew our passports and lose the few months left, which were back within ten days. This was the reply:

Thank you for your email regarding your passport. Guests can board and travel to EU countries*  if their passport was issued less than 10 years before the day of embarkation and still has at least three months left before the date of expiry of the passport, as at the date of disembarkation  (regardless of whether or not the passport has an extension period). I hope this information has helped to answer your enquiry and we look forward to welcoming you on board.

Does your expiry date exceed ten years from the issue date, if so you may have a problem that is the EU only recognises  10 years from the issue date so you need 9 years and 9 months or more left from the issue date. sorry if it does not make sense. i.e my passport was issued july 2017 but expiry date is feb 2028 but to the EU the expiry date is july 2027

They can check you in on the phone: as long as (as the others responses have mentioned,) that you have 3 months left from the 10 year issue date, not including any extra months you may have carried over.

I had that problem. I filled in all my details, photos, debit card, etc  then downloaded my boarding pass but  the luggage labels won't download. I left it a day and went back into My P&O and was able to download them then.

Try this it worked for us

When printing your boarding pass please ensure you've enabled pop-ups. If you’re experiencing issues when trying to print your boarding pass or luggage labels, and all the above conditions have been met, the issue could be connected to page loading. Try clicking away from the Booking Summary to another page (e.g. Before You Sail) and then click back to the Booking Summary – this will force the page to reload and should make the boarding pass and luggage labels available.

If this is unsuccessful, please check back and retry closer to departure, repeating the above if necessary.

Thanks for replies ,used my computer with no problems ,tried samsung phone still wasn't playing ball, tried my samsung pad got a bit further but couldn't seem to print ,so tried my old computer and hey presto it worked

Thank you for your replies re passport validity and online check in.  We will phone P and O in the morning and hopefully do it over the telephone.
