Comedy legend Peter Kay has been away a long time.

Many even questioned if he could recapture the magic from his earlier career but Vanessa Sims, editor of the Lancashire Post and Blackpool Gazette can confirm he DEFINITELY can...

As I made the descent (in the dark) down the million steps from the concourse to the floor of the arena - the sheer scale of the task facing Peter Kay was laid out for all to see.

Not only did he have to make 21,000 people laugh but keep them with him for his two hour show. A tall order for even a seasoned pro.

As I made my way to my seat, I was relieved I had not arrived a few minutes later as Kay took to the stage with a camera and was honing in on the crowd still trying to get to their seats.

It was immediately clear he is literally half the man he used to be.

In fact, I think he even sounds a bit different, if that's possible?

But he still has that special recipe of Kay magic.

He started off the show with a round of 'remember that advert' - which was an instant crowd pleaser.

He even paid reference to the former jingle of Lancashire business Charnock Richard Cycles.

Belting out the Chorley's business' instantly recognisable jingle 'Get yourself to down to Charnock Richard Cycles' accompanied by the crowd - Kay had the room in stitches.

He even went on to describe how he visited Charnock Richard Cycles to buy a bike for his son - but said they were too pedantic over all the extra things the bike could do - when he simply wanted a bike.

He then advised the 21,000 people in the audience 'Don't shop at Charnock Richard Cycles'.

Bolton-born Kay is 10 months into a two-and-a-half year arena tour boasting 110 dates.

The show had everything you could want... laughter, tears, music, crowd interaction and a special guest.

Kay's extra special ability to be able to turn the everyday mundane into laugh-out-loud comedy is still at the forefront of his show.

And I've got to give it to him - the show was worth every penny of the £75 ticket price.

As the majority of the crowd settled down to watch the Phoenix Nights star with a two pint special for the extortionate price of £16.95 - he even paid reference to the 'great offer' on the drinks tonight while pulling one of his famous faces.

I'm conscious the tour still has 18 months to go and I don't want to give away his act - but I can't not mention the special guest who appeared in Manchester.

Oasis legend Noel Gallagher took to the spade to jam on stage with the comedy icon.

The crowd went wild to see a fellow Mancunian - who initially they thought was Kay, sporting a mask of Kay, to then remove it to reveal one of Noel Gallagher, before finally revealing himself.

It added a little extra something despite Gallagher not even speaking.

For all those who have tickets to the upcoming gigs - you're in for a treat!

And to Peter Kay - we're so glad you're back - don't leave it as long next time!

'Peter Kay's comeback tour was beyond incredible and featured megastar guest'

Peter Kay disappeared for many years but fans were still eager to catch him on his recent tour, which is why it probably sold out so quickly and there's one reason, writes Daniel Bird

Peter Kay's show at Manchester's AO Arena was one of the best

  • 19:26, 13 Dec 2023

Stand-up comedy in front of a live audience must be difficult but in front of 23,000 people, it must be tough for even the most experienced.

But Peter Kay seemed to be at ease following his recent residency in his hometown at Manchester's AO Arena in the city centre. The comedy legend has already performed eight sold-out shows at the arena and has even more to come in the new year.

In total, Peter is performing 46 shows across his tour which, due to popular demand has had to be split over 2023, 2024 and 2025. It comes as no surprise that the vast majority of these are, of course, in Manchester.

Upon announcing his comeback tour, the legend said: "It's good to get back to what I love doing best, stand-up comedy, and if there's ever a time people need a laugh it's now," before adding that he was blown away due to the response he received from the public. But what made it so good? Besides the fact he is an utter genius in comedy, Peter made the audience feel as though they were watching him in their local pub.

It didn't matter that he was performing at the UK's biggest indoor arena, with ease, he commanded the stage and had everybody in fits of laughter. Throughout the show, he spotted people from the audience and got them involved with his jokes but we were safely tucked away in the Virgin Red Room so we were safe.

Discussing growing up in Manchester, Peter recalled only having several channels on his TV, saying: "We had BBC One, BBC Two, ITV and ITV2 but there were no Love Island then, Channel 4 was just a star." He even went on to recall a story when he discovered Eric Clapton was a fan of his and once invited him to his house in the South of France, much to his shock.

But it wasn't just comedy that fans were treated to, Peter took to the stage and belted out his own rendition of several classic songs for fans, albeit using a spade instead of a guitar. However, one thing we didn't expect was an unexpected cameo from Oasis legend Noel Gallagher.

It's safe to say that Peter Kay certainly didn't disappoint and there is a reason why he's still one of the most in-demand comics. His show was everything and more.

Although fans were able to purchase tickets, those who use Virgin Red were able to exchange points on their account for tickets to events while sitting in the lavish suite at the arena. But this isn't all, to make the most of a trip to Manchester's AO Arena with Virgin Red, you can even use points for hotels, train tickets and experience days including iFly based at Trafford Park.

Peter Kay's defiant message as Manchester Arena reopens after terror attack

Armed police and trauma counsellors are on hand as the Manchester Arena reopens four months after the suicide bomb attack.

Sunday 10 September 2017 05:39, UK

Peter Kay

Comedian Peter Kay told the first crowd inside Manchester Arena since May's terror attack: "We cannot let the terrorists win, the victims will never be forgotten."

His message came as thousands of people cheered the names of those killed in the attack at a charity concert to reopen the venue.

The names of the 22 murdered in the bombing were read out by Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham at the start of the show.

The 14,000 concert-goers clapped and cheered, before Mr Burnham said: "Thank you to the city for coming together.

The crowd during the We Are Manchester benefit show

"Thank you for being who you are. We are Manchester, a city united, nothing will ever change us, nothing will ever divide us."

Before introducing headliner Noel Gallagher later in the night, Peter Kay told fans: "I've played here many times, I've watched a lot of acts here and I've seen a lot of happiness and joy in this building and in this room.

"There's been a lot of joy in this room, including the night of the twenty-second of May, right up until the terrorist attack.

"We cannot let terrorists win. The victims will never ever be forgotten."

Families of some of the victims were in the crowd at the concert, and there was tight security with armed police and sniffer dogs on duty.

Backpacks, large bags and even iPads were banned as people filed through metal detectors on their way in to the We Are Manchester event.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was at the show

Trauma specialists and mental health professionals were also on hand.

The event comes three and a half months after Manchester resident Salman Abedi detonated a bomb in the venue's foyer as people left an Ariana Grande concert on 22 May.

Poet Tony Walsh also recited his poem This Is The Place before the music began.

He moved some people to tears when he performed the poem at a vigil at Manchester town hall the day after the attack.

Pixie Lott

Walsh told the arena: "The world is watching, the world is listening, and the world now knows that this is the place. We are musical, we are multicultural, we are Manchester, we are magnificent, and we are back."

Pixie Lott was the first star on stage, with The Courteeners, Blossoms, Rick Astley, Bugzy Malone, and Nadine Coyle also performing.

But it was former Oasis star Noel Gallagher who was the headliner.

Kaye introduced the singer by ironically announcing he was "all the way from London" - before Gallagher launched into Oasis anthems including Champagne Supernova and Half the World Away.

The climax was, of course, Don't Look Back In Anger.

The song became the sound of defiance, unity and hope in the days following the attack, after a crowd spontaneously sang it at a vigil.

Thousands at the concert again drew meaning from the anthem, singing together as the chorus rang out around the arena.

Peter Kay is back, and his new show is receiving rave reviews.

Kay is returning to live comedy for the first time in 12 years with a massive UK tour.

The 49-year-old comedian cancelled his last tour in December 2017, citing “unforeseen family circumstances” , and has been largely absent from the public eye for the four years since.

What has the reaction to the show been?

Peter Kay wept after his long-awaited return to the stage in Manchester was met by a prolonged standing ovation on 2 December.

The much-loved Bolton comedian has begun a new record-breaking tour. His return in 2022 has been met by huge demand for tickets, with more than a quarter of a million people joining an online queue last month.

Mr Kay’s first show was at the AO Arena in Manchester on Friday, with fans describing it as a night of high emotions.

Fans on social media described the emotional scenes before the show kicked off, with the audience chanting his name and clapping for several minutes as he took to the stage on Friday evening.

Ellie Middleton tweeted: “Peter kay came out on stage and everyone gave him a standing ovation for about 5 minutes and he cried and I actually can’t cope.”

Andrew Flynn added: “What an absolute privilege to be there for Peter Kay’s return to the big stage. He got a standing ovation for his entrance and was reduced to tears, never seen anything like it. No spoilers, just a superb night.”

Following the applause, Kay had to compose himself, pausing to lean against a stool before dabbing his eyes, then telling the audience: “Oh Jesus look at me, I mean what’s that all about… how am I supposed to do bloody comedy now?”

He reportedly added: “Lovely Manchester you made me cry… where did it come from, all that emotion?”

His new show has received glowing reviews, with critics saying it follows a familiar theme of nostalgia gags and riffs on modern technology, as well as fresh material.

Writing in The Guardian , Brian Logan said he was particularly impressed by a “jaw-dropping pageant” during an encore which he described as “spectacular”.

What are the new tour dates?

He announced the extra shows, which span 2023 and 2025, on BBC Radio on Thursday.

He said: “First of all, I want to say thanks to everyone who’s bought tickets to my tour, and I really do appreciate it.

“We’ve finally managed to book some more extra dates.”

The new tour dates include:

'Move forward with love and not hate': Peter Kay's message of defiance as Manchester Arena reopens

COMEDIAN PETER KAY delivered a heartfelt message to the crowd at the Manchester Arena last night, as the venue reopened in the wake of May’s terror attack.

Kay said the last four months had been “incredibly painful”.

“I know the memories of that night will stay with us for a very long time but we’ve got to remember the good times and let them outweigh the bad.”

The Bolton comedian, who once worked as a steward at the venue, said that the victims of the bombing would never be forgotten.

We’ve got to move forward with love and not hate, and that’s how we win.

Kay then introduced Noel Gallagher, who led the crowd through a sing-along of the Oasis hit Don’t Look Back in Anger.

Back in May, the crowd at a one-minute silence for the victims of the attack broke into a spontaneous rendition of the song, and it has since taken on a new significance for the city.

“If anyone here ever doubted that Manchester was the greatest city in England… there was a minute’s silence and one girl broke the silence and started to sing and it’s amazing how everyone rallied around that song that I’m about to sing,” Gallagher told the crowd, according to the Manchester Evening News .

It’s become some kind of anthem of defiance. And every time we sing we win, so keep on singing.

Gallagher’s performance closed the concert.

Peter Kay on stage

Peter Kay review – from tried and tested everyman routine to jaw-dropping pageant

Manchester Arena After 12 years away from the stage, the slimmed-down entertainer is more unapologetically nostalgic than ever

N o hotcake ever sold in greater quantity than tickets for Peter Kay’s new tour : at one stage in my own bid for access, I was numbered 450,000 in the online queue. It’s a fair bet, then, that Kay will break the record he himself set in 2010 for the biggest-selling standup tour of all time – 1.2 million people saw that show. But is all the fuss justified? And will the long wait for this new show, fraught with speculation about Kay’s health and the likelihood of him ever touring again, prove worthwhile?

If there was any doubt, it was dispelled the moment the slimmed-down 49-year-old stepped onstage at the Manchester Arena. The reception was long, loud and, for Kay, tear-jerking. He took a pause to settle himself: “How’m I supposed to do bloody comedy now?” Not much doubt, though, how Kay was going to do comedy. The two-hour show scarcely deviated from the everyman formula that has made him such a popular success. Some of it, indeed, was almost parodically formulaic, as the Bolton man riffed on modern technology (“What did we do before Amazon? Catalogues!”), led a singalong of 1970s advertising jingles, and gave his famous “garlic bread” routine an Italian makeover.

But for all that, it didn’t come across as just another Peter Kay show. It has a more reflective air: the first half found Kay reminiscing on the dead-end jobs he worked before he was famous, including a stint as an usher in this very arena. The show’s other theme is the recent death of his 96-year-old nan, a big presence in Kay’s life. Earlier, that manifested as some first-base gags about gran’s malapropisms. Later, it prompted a sentimental finale, as a conversation grandson had with granny at the end of her life is replayed over a family-album slideshow.

Elsewhere, while the set never directly addresses the reasons for Kay’s temporary disappearance from public life, there is a section on his recent health challenges. In comic terms, it’s the strongest part of the show, as Kay rolls his eyes at the anaesthetist asking for a selfie, then recounts the indignities of his recent operation for kidney stones. It’s familiar standup territory, but Kay’s got a minimalist gift for expressing indignity and dismay – and there’s a great acting-out of a genitally entangled couple making their way to hospital after an unfortunate post-op accident.

Fans with Peter Kay lines on T-shirts

While this routine is fit to stand alongside well-loved favourites from Kay’s earlier shows, some of the material in the first act barely registers as comedy. When our host orchestrates the audience in a TV theme recital, say, or goes all misty-eyed at one chocolate-bar jingle after another, his role is more conduit for our collective memory than comedian. You look in vain for punchlines – at least until the show’s multiple encores, when those early sections are revisited and built upon in quite spectacular fashion.

It would be unsporting to say too much about the jaw-dropping pageant that Kay lays on here, after the comedy show proper has come to an end. In keeping with the evening’s reflective vibe, there’s a section on misunderstood song lyrics, calling back to one of Kay’s most popular routines – and as funny as ever, because Kay takes so much pleasure in sharing with us these daft misapprehensions. After that, things get wilder, as all those TV themes and jingles return with bells and whistles added – and celebrity cameos, and hot air balloons, and our host dressed like Sergeant Pepper, living out his rockstar dreams.

By the end of Kay’s return to the stage after 12 years away, you can’t help but submit, not just to the spectacle, but to Kay’s commitment to celebrating his generational experience. Top Cat, the Bodyform advert, Blockbuster video: Kay doesn’t just joke about these Proustian madeleines of our shared youth – he fashions his whole show into a hymn to them. One can only imagine what anyone under 30 would think. But for Kay’s fans, it’s catnip. He returns to the stage older, as unapologetically traditional and even more nostalgic than ever, and delivers a show that’s pretty much irresistible.

Comedian Peter Kay has joined the line-up for the Manchester Arena reopening - returning to the site of his first ever job.

He will introduce headline act Noel Gallagher at Saturday night's We Are Manchester concert - the first at the venue since the May 22 bombing which left 22 dead after an Ariana Grande gig.

Phoenix Nights star Peter, 44, worked at the Arena as a steward in 1995, and said in the aftermath of this year’s atrocity that he was particularly affected by the tragedy, the Mirror reports .

After attending a vigil in the city centre, he said: “I felt completely numb. It affects you. The Arena has always been a massive part of my life.

peter kay tour noel gallagher

“I started working there when it first opened as a steward and then I started doing shows there. I was there on Saturday night watching Take That.

“I know it so well, I know a lot of the staff, I just feel so comfortable there. I think that’s what’s upset me the most about it.

“It’s surreal - it’s awful. People just need to love each other and get through it. We’ve got no choice.”

He continued that he hopes another memorial takes place, adding: “It’s important the victims’ families see that - it will help them in a small way. You feel helpless.”

Bolton-born Peter joins the lineup for the gig in support of the Manchester Memorial Fund, a charitable trust overseen by the Lord Mayor of Manchester which plans to erect a permanent memorial to the victims of the attack.

Hyde boxer Ricky Hatton, 38, will also introduce an act on stage, while Russell Kane hosts the evening. Music acts including Courteeners, Blossoms, Rick Astley and Pixie Lott will perform during the evening.

Ariana, 24, returned to Manchester in June to curate a concert starring acts including Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Little Mix and Noel’s sibling Liam Gallagher.Liam, who flew in on a private jet from Germany to appear at the show, is performing in Madrid, Spain tomorrow evening [SAT]. Noel donated royalties from Oasis track Don’t Look Back In Anger to the Manchester Emergency Fund.

As people raved about how good the show was on social media, some found it difficult to move past the ejection of one fan who was in the seats on the ground floor in front of the stage. In videos seen by the ECHO, Peter Kay is sat on the stage joking about the supposed heckler being taken out of the gig.

He said: "Oh, it's all kicking off here. Where's my phone? He's a bit of an a******e, he's a bit annoying.

"I like a laugh, I'm a comedian but I can tell all them people round there are getting a bit nowty now. He likes the limelight, I know I do but I'm on stage."

Sue Lindsay said on Twitter: "@peterkay_co_uk absolutely top entertainment at the M&S Bank Arena last night. Expert way of dealing with a k***head heckler as well, think 13,000 people were glad to see him escorted out."

Kieran Hodge thought it was an overreaction. He wrote: "@peterkay_co_uk first half [was] funny tonight until you decided to throw that feller out for asking for an autograph, doesn't look good mate I thought you was one of us."

Although Jake Highes backed the comedian up. He replied: "Think there was more to it than that, everyone around him seemed p****d off."

Sally Marston tweeted: "@peterkay_co_uk Saw you tonight [at the] @MandSBankArena & I can honestly say, I laughed, cried & felt every emotion possible.

"You are so talented & so glad you got rid of the heckler. Please continue being you."

Noel Gallagher 'shows no signs of healing his decades long rift with brother Liam as he enjoys nights out with the Oasis star's nemesis'

Noel Gallagher is showing no sign of squashing the feud with his brother Liam, as he's reportedly formed a surprise friendship with Peter Kay .

The former Oasis singer, 55, has allegedly become close with the comedian, 49, who famously called Liam, 50, a 'k**bhead' at the 2010 BRIT Awards .

Having attended the funnyman's recent Manchester gig, it has been claimed Noel hit it off with Liam's nemesis Peter after they met backstage.

A source told The Sun : 'Noel went to Peter's Manchester gig last week and they met backstage and got on like a house on fire.

'They spent time together after the show and it was a great laugh. Peter is a huge fan of Noel's and it was a pleasure for him to welcome him.

'Noel surprised some of the crowd at the arena who had no idea he'd be making an appearance.'

MailOnline has contacted Noel and Peter's representatives for comment.

Peter's feud with Liam stems from an on-stage encounter at the BRITs.

Picking up the gong for Best Album of 30 Years for the 1995 record (What's The Story) Morning Glory?, the Oasis star swore his way through his acceptance speech, before hurling his microphone and award into the audience.

Making his acceptance speech, the frontman thanked the early members of the band, with the exception of older brother Noel, who walked out on the group last summer.

Arriving alone on stage, he yelled into the microphone: 'Listen kids. I want to thank Bonehead, Guigsy and Alan White. The best band in the f**king world. Live forever.'

It was after he threw his microphone and award into the crowd and sulked off the stage, Peter remarked: 'What a k**bhead.'

A furious Liam later tweeted: 'Listen up fat f**k as a real northerner I was brought up 2 say s**t 2 people's faces not behind their back. Live forever LG.'

Peter wrote on his website the next day: 'So it was the Brits last night and I was honoured to be asked to host the show, especially with it being 30 years old.

'Congratulations to all the winners, including Noel Gallagher, who sadly didn't get a mention (and who thankfully isn't a k***head).'

More recently, Liam proved the quarrel was still ongoing when asked if he would be attending one of Peter's comeback gigs, saying, 'F*** him the balloon knot.'
