WATCH: Club pro Michael Block dunks hole-in-one for all-time PGA Championship moment with fairytale ending

Block's storybook week at the 2023 pga championship wrapped with an all-time ace and memorable up-and-down.

michael-block-ace-pga-2023-g.png

As if Michael Block's fairytale week could not be any more storybook, the PGA Professional on Sunday delivered an pair of all-time PGA Championship moments. Playing alongside world No. 3 Rory McIlroy in the final round at Oak Hill Country Club, the 46-year-old slam dunked his tee shot on the par-3 15th for a hole-in-one.

Block's first career hole-in-one in competition propelled him to a memorable finish that ultimately resulted with him placing inside the top 15 on the leaderboard and therefore securing a spot in the field for the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla. (Block also received a special exemption to next week's Charles Schwab Challenge.)

"I've never made a hole-in-one in a tournament in my entire life," Block told CBS Sports' Amanda Balionis. "To make it at that time on hole 15 with the crowd and everyone there and the support I've had from the Rochester fans was probably the most surreal moment I'll ever have in my life. And I definitely enjoyed it."

Arriving at the hole 2 over for the championship and his fourth round, the club pro from Southern California gave the raucous Rochester faithful even more to get rowdy about. It could not have come at a better time for Block, who was soaking in every moment while simultaneously competing for that future exemption.

Block's ace was the only hole-in-one at the 2023 PGA Championship this week. In fact, it's the only one that's transpired at the event since 2020.

MICHAEL BLOCK! HOLE-IN-ONE! pic.twitter.com/AGckvo8F7B — Golf on CBS ⛳ (@GolfonCBS) May 21, 2023

"That didn't go in, did it?!" Block asked McIlroy and his caddie simultaneously in true disbelief. "No. No. No way. No way. Rory, did it go in?!"

Yes, it sure did, Michael.

"Couldn't really see it. I knew it was at the pin but had no idea that it went in," recalled Block. "… Rory comes over to me and gives me a hug. I'm like, 'Why is Rory giving me a hug for getting close?' That's kind of weird, but I was cool with it. So, I walk down about 20-30 yards and look back at him, like, 'Did that go in the hole?' … And the next thing I know, it did."

"Ready for this one?" Michael Block marks his ace. pic.twitter.com/wUPR4dfWCK — Golf on CBS ⛳ (@GolfonCBS) May 21, 2023

Block's hole-in-one, a 7-iron from 151 yards out, is the first by a club pro at the PGA Championship since George Bowman in 1996. More importantly, it got Block back to even par and inside the top 15.

When walking off the green after picking up his ball from the broken cup, Block turned to his caddie and simply exclaimed, "Are you kidding me?!"

The ace may have been the shot of the championship, but the moment of the week came three holes later on the 18th green.

After a bogey on the 16th, Block needed to get up-and-down for par on the 72nd hole to remain inside the top 15. Unfortunately, his approach landed well into the gallery, creating an unlikely scenario for him to accomplish his goal.

Yet the magic continued for Block, who nipped a beautiful pitch and converted an all-world par save to get in the house at 1 over in a three-way tie for 15th at the PGA Championship.

With that, Block earned his way to Valhalla. Talk about living happily ever after.

Michael Block says hole-in-one 'absolutely destroyed' the cup, soaks in finish

The pro from Mission Viejo will return to play in the 2024 PGA Championship.

All eyes were on an unlikely hero at Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford, New York, over the weekend where a California golf pro made history at the PGA Championship with his mind-boggling hole-in-one during the final round.

Michael Block, 46, slam dunked his shot off the 15th tee alongside Rory McIlroy, who hugged him and had to assure him it really went right in the hole.

"That's a brutal hole because you can't miss it right or left. Rory had just gone right before me and got a horrible kick, was in a really tough position," Block told "Good Morning America," reflecting on the tee shot less than 24 hours later. "I knew I had to hit a pretty good shot there."

He continued, "I didn't see it go in and all of a sudden Rory turns around and he starts walking back at me with his arms open to give me a hug. I'm like, 'Why in the world is Rory McIlroy giving me a hug right now -- did it go in?' He goes, 'Yeah, Block, it went in!' I couldn't believe it. To have it happen under those circumstances, coming down the stretch on the back nine on a Sunday in the PGA Championship with Rory McIlroy was an experience I'll never have again in my life and I'm gonna enjoy it."

PHOTO: Michael Block, PGA of America Club Professional, and Rory McIlroy congratulate each other on the 18th green during the final round of the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club on May 21, 2023 in Rochester, N.Y.

He added that the force of the ball "blew up the hole," making it difficult to pull out initially.

"The hole got just absolutely destroyed. The ball went directly in, it flew in the front of the cup, it never bounced or hit the pin or anything," Block said. "We had to take about five minutes. Rules officials had to come over. We had to get it fixed -- I have never had it happen like that in my life. It was crazy."

He became the first PGA club pro to make a hole-in-one at the PGA Championship since George Bowman in 1996, according to ESPN .

Fans at Block's hometown Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, where he teaches lessons, erupted in cheers as the crowds on the course boomed with excitement.

"The support that I have from Arroyo -- the management there has also allowed me to get out and play. And to be able to work on my game. I have got a great position -- I'm very, very lucky," he said. "I think I have got the best job in golf where I can come out and still play with the best players in the world, yet at the same time I can be at my house most of the time and have a steady job and steady pay check where I don't have to play golf to make a living."

Block sat tied for eighth going into Sunday's round, just six shots back from four-time major champion Brooks Koepka, and finished out his fairytale week with a final putt for par. The par save clinched a tie for 15th and gave him automatic entry into the 2024 PGA Championship.

"We were literally walking down fairways pinching ourselves," Block said of his weekend with caddie John Jackson. "I'm paired with Justin Rose on Saturday and Rory on Sunday. The crowd's just huge here in Rochester. Fans were amazing. Rory is walking ahead of us and I looked at my caddie and said, 'Is this even real?'"

Three holes after his remarkable ace, Block needed to make par on 18 to finish 15th and automatically qualify for next year's tournament.

"I honestly didn't know what it was for," he said of his final putt to close the day. "I didn't know where I was in position. I said I was not going to look at the scoreboards, even though they are all over the place and huge. ... I would not have made the putt if I knew. I'm happy with the fact that I didn't know."

Block sank the putt to finish with a 1-over 71 on Sunday and 1-over for the tournament.

In the 105 years of the PGA Championship, no PGA professional has ever finished inside the top 10. In 2005, Steve Schneiter was the last PGA pro to finish inside the top-40 at the tournament.

Earlier in the week, Block was already the talk of Twitter, as the only PGA professional to make the cut out of the 20 who qualified to play.

Koepka, who defected from the PGA to play for the rival Saudi-backed LIV Tour, took home his fifth major win.

"He walked off of 18 green, I was walking towards 18 -- [Koepka] told me that the first round [of drinks] was on me after that hole-in-one. He gave me a big hug," Block said. "I am very thrilled to be able to stand next to him during the final ceremony."

In addition to qualifying for next year's PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky, Block also received a sponsor exemption to play in next week’s Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

Block told "GMA" his biggest takeaway after this tournament is "you gotta be yourself."

"You play your best when you try to be just yourself. Don't try to be a tour pro. Don't try to be somebody you're not," he encouraged. "That's what I have been doing and it's really helped my game a ton. It's made the hole bigger."

Block continued, "I have always lived my whole life to where I want that hole to look as big as possible. Thank goodness this week at Oak Hill, it looked huge."

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Just when you think this week at the PGA Championship couldn’t get any more unbelievable for Michael Block, the 46-year-old club pro from Mission Viejo, Calif. jarred a hole-in-one on the 15th hole in Sunday’s final round.

Block, the only one of the 20 club pros in the 156-player field to make the cut, stood on the tee after his shot in utter disbelief when he realized the shot went into the hole in the fly.

“Did that go in?” Block asked his playing partner Rory McIlroy, who gave him a hug with a pat on the stomach. “No. No. No way. I just saw (the ball) go at it, but I had no idea. Are you kidding me?”

Block, whose mantra is the phrase “Why Not?’’, has had an are-you-kidding-me week since the moment the tournament began.

“I didn’t really see it, I knew it was at the pin,” Block said on CBS after his round. “I had no idea it went in. … Then Rory comes over and give me a hug. I’m like, ‘Why’s Rory giving me a hug?’

“I really walked down another 20-30 yards and I looked back and him and went, ‘Did that go in the hole?’ because everyone’s going crazy.”

He said he had never made a hole-in-one in a tournament before

To makes things better, his up-and-down for par on No. 18 clinched him a finish in the top 15 at 1-over and earned chance to play next year’s PGA Championship.

He entered Sunday’s final round having shot three consecutive even-par rounds to stand at even for the tournament and in ninth place.

No club pro has ever finished in the top 10 in the storied 105-year history of the PGA Championship.

A top-15 finish this week would qualify Block for next year’s PGA at Valhalla.

A top-four finish would qualify him for next year’s Masters.

A top-10 finish would get Block an invitation to next week’s Canadian Open, and a two-way tie for third or better would get him temporary playing status on the PGA Tour.

The ace moved Block from 2-over par to even par and in a tie for 14th at the time.

Block, whose largest paycheck for a golf tournament was $75,000, stood to make a six-figure prize-money check Sunday, pending his finish.

He already was as much the star of this PGA Championship as the top players in the world, vying for the title, including Brooks Koepka, Scottie Scheffler, McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland.

Then came the ace on No. 15, the 29th hole-in-one in a PGA since 1983.

Michael Block (r.) hi-fives Rory McIlroy after hitting a hole-in-one on the 15th hole in the final round at the PGA Championship on May 21, 2023.

Scheffler was getting ready to hit his second shot on the 14th hole when Block’s ace occurred, igniting — by far — the loudest roars this tournament has produced all week.

When a walking TV reporter told Scheffler what had taken place, Scheffler smiled and said, “This is crazy.”

When he arrived to the green and plucked the ball out of the hole, Block showed it to the fans surrounding the green, who were in an absolute frenzy.

Block’s shot damaged the lip of cup on 15 that needed to be repaired and his caddie, John Johnson, a full-time looper at Pebble Beach, said to him, “Way to cause a delay.’’

Block responded, “I’ll cause that delay any time.”

Michael Block sends PGA Championship into a frenzy with unreal Hole in One

Michael Block’s fairytale week isn’t over yet as the PGA pro slam dunked a hole-in-one on the par-3 15th, as if this story couldn’t get any sweeter.

2023 PGA Championship, Michael Block

Michael Block isn’t finished winning over the Oak Hill Country Club fans as he slam dunked a hole-in-one on the par-3 15th. The ball didn’t roll in but went straight in on the fly. A hole in one is rare enough, but to do it that way is even more incredible.

Block couldn’t believe it either, and he kept saying, “No way. No Way. Rory, did that go in?” Yes, it went in and sent the crowd into a frenzy. As if his story couldn’t get any better, Block makes an ace to get back to even par in the tournament.

He has had some of the best luck this week, and the golf gods must want the world to see his story because the odds of making a hole-in-one are astronomical, but to make one on Championship Sunday at a major — who even knows. Block continues to show how much of a stud he is with his game. He is fighting hard despite a tough start to his final round.

CBS Sports wasn’t giving the Southern California pro much coverage , but they should now. With three holes to play, Block could be playing himself into next year’s PGA Championship and the history books.

He already became the first PGA Club Professional to enter the final round of a Major in the top 10. He’s looking to finish that way as well, and make history along the way.

He won over the people of Rochester, NY., the PGA Tour pros around him, and is showing the world who he is. It doesn’t get much better than an ace on a Sunday.

WATCH: Club pro Michael Block lights up Oak Hill with jarred hole-in-one at PGA

Michael Block is a fan favorite at this week's PGA Championship.

Just when you thought his story couldn’t get any better at this week’s PGA Championship , club pro Michael Block said, “Hold my beer.”

Well, figuaratively, anyway. But we know the man likes his IPAs !

The craft brews are sure to be flowing after Block’s latest triumph at Oak Hill : a hole-in-one on the 151 par-3 15th. And not just any hole-in-one: Block absolutely jarred his 7-iron — no hop, no roll, just straight into the hole.

MICHAEL. BLOCK. ACE. #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/YitD2QLDB7 — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 21, 2023

Block took the hole-in-one in stride. As the crowd went nuts, he tipped his cap, and accepted a congratulatory belly pat from McIlroy.

“No. No. No way,” Block said in disbelief.

He received a long ovation from the gallery as he approached the green and paused for a second before picking his ball out of the cup, which was visibly damaged from his hole-out.

The ace was yet another feather in Block’s ever-expanding cap at the PGA Championship . A quick recap: Of the 20 PGA club professionals who qualified to play this week, Block is the only one who even made the cut.

Michael Block

How Michael Block became the PGA king — as told by those who know him best

Three consecutive rounds of even-par 70 launched him into actual contention — and a pairing alongside McIlroy on Sunday. The ace on 15 brought Block back to even par for the tournament, and T14, making his final holes even more interesting. There’s a lot at stake for Block:

-No PGA pro has ever finished in Top 10 in the PGA Championship.

-A finish in the Top 15 will grant him an exemption into next year’s PGA Championship at Valhalla.

-A Top-4 finish gets him into the 2024 Masters.

-A two-way tie for third would earn him special temporary membership on the PGA Tour.

Talk about pressure.

But regardless of what happens to Block on Sunday evening, one thing’s for sure: This week at Oak Hill is one he’ll never forget.

These Guys Are Good

Tour pro makes hole-in-one at Valspar, reveals he accomplished an even rarer feat during Monday Pro-Am

1473949433

Julio Aguilar

It has not been Ryan Brehm's year, and that's putting it lightly. If you remove his one good week, a T-14 at the Honda Classic, you're left with 14 missed cuts in 16 starts. Not much has gone right for the reigning Puerto Rico Open champion.

RELATED: Fred Couples calls Phil Mickelson a 'nutbag' and Sergio Garcia a 'clown'

The beauty of golf, though, is that it can flip on a literal dime, which appears to be exactly what happened for Brehm on Thursday at the Valspar Championship. The 36-year-old made birdie on the par-5 first at Innisbrook to begin his round, then sprinkled in three more against just one bogey over his next 15 holes. At three under on the 17th tee, he then jumped to five under with a hole-in-one, the first of his career on the PGA Tour:

What's particularly funny about this one is it sounds like Brehm didn't love it. "CARRY!" you'll hear him say as the ball sails toward the green, Brehm hoping it would get all the way to the front edge. It ended up carrying all the way to the bottom of the cup.

RELATED:  Gary McCord reveals the full story of why he was banned from Masters broadcasts

"It kind of surprised me when I saw it go in the hole, honestly," Brehm said afterward. "But we got a good reaction. It was a lot of fun. I was really just trying to cover the front edge of the green, and we had the wind that was down off of the right. I think we had 189 to cover the front edge and it probably flew almost 200 yards. So it was pretty fun to see that thing trickle in."

Now here comes the truly crazy part. While speaking with the media, Brehm revealed that his ace wasn't even the rarest feat he accomplished on the Copperhead Course this week. The truly rare one came during Monday's Pro-Am.

"My wife and I talk about it all the time. I'm glad she was there because she's like, 'I've never seen you have one," he said. "And ironically, in the Monday Pro-Am, I rinsed one on 13 for my first shot, grabbed a different club, teed it up, and jarred it for a par.

"So it must be something about this week."

We'd say so. A hole-in-three and a hole-in-one in the span of four days might just mean it's your week. The first-round 66, which has him tied for the lead, certainly helps his it-might-be-my-week case, too.

Scoring a hole-in-one is one of the biggest thrills in golf, for golfers of every skill level. It's also a feat that requires a lot of luck. But there's no question that the higher your skill level, the better your odds of making a hole-in-one . The first step in scoring an ace is putting your tee shot on the green, after all.

Would you believe that the golfer generally acknowledged as the all-time record-holder for most aces has more than 50 of them? It's true. Here is a look at that record, plus some of the records on the pro tours for career aces.

The All-Time Record for Most Holes-in-One: 51

Mancil Davis is generally recognized as the all-time record-holder with 51 career holes-in-one. We say "generally recognized" because there was an amateur golfer in California named Norman Manley who claimed to make 59 aces. Davis' 51 aces, however (unlike some of Manley's claimed aces) are almost all well-documented — one was even witnessed by Ben Crenshaw .

Davis has been a PGA of America member since 1974. Over his career, he served as director of golf at The Woodlands near Houston and at The Trophy Club near Dallas, among other stops. He briefly played on the PGA Tour. And many of his aces happened during tournament play. That includes the most recent of Davis' 51 holes-in-one, which happened during a celebrity golf tournament in 2007. Davis' first ace occurred in 1967.

In addition to his 51 career aces, Davis' record includes 10 career double eagles . ( Double eagle odds are much higher than hole-in-one odds.) He has made a hole-in-one with every club except putter, sand wedge and pitching wedge. Davis has made five aces on the same hole (No. 2 at Odessa Country Club in Odessa, Texas),and has aced all four par-3 holes on one course (Trophy Club). And he made at least one hole-in-one per year from 1967-87. It's probably not a surprise that Davis' income as a golf professional included many personal appearances at tournaments and hole-in-one contests , billing himself as "The King of Aces."

Before Mancil Davis came along, the golfer usually called the hole-in-one record-holder was 1959 Masters champion Art Wall . Wall made 45 holes-in-one, a total that includes aces scored in every setting, whether official tournament rounds, friendly rounds or practice rounds. Many of the, however, were scored on one particular hole on his home course in Pocono Manor, Pa., , where he played a lot .

Tour Records for Most Holes-in-One

On the PGA Tour, the record for most career aces is 10, according to PGA Tour statisticians. That record is shared by Robert Allenby and Hal Sutton. Note that this, and the other tour records that follow, counts only those aces scored during official tournament play. These are the numbers of holes-in-one these golfers made in tour events.

What About Nicklaus and Palmer?

Perhaps you noted the absence of the all-time great golfers from the PGA Tour list above. According to PGA Tour record-keepers, Jack Nicklaus made "only" three aces in official PGA Tour rounds. Nicklaus has made 20 holes-in-one overall (including all his practice and friendly rounds), according to Nicklaus' website. Arnold Palmer is also credited with three aces during official PGA Tour rounds, but Palmer had 19 holes-in-one across all settings. Other totals (among all rounds played, including friendly and practice rounds) are 19 aces for Gary Player and 18 for Tiger Woods .

Heading into his final round at Oak Hill on Sunday, it seemed like Michael Block's week at the PGA Championship couldn't get any better.

That is until he hit his tee shot on the par-3 15th hole.

Block, the 46-year-old PGA playing pro at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, California, took aim at the green and hit a beautiful shot that was right in line with the pin.

As the ball came down, it dunked into the hole for an ace, and the crowd went ballistic.

Block looked at his partner for the day, Rory McIlory, and asked, "Did that go in, Rory?"

McIlory, whom Block couldn't believe he was playing with after his Saturday round, nodded with a yes and his face said it all: He was amazed.

Block made his way to the hole and the crowd never let up. The cheers were deafening, and he couldn't shake the smile off his face.

Block has been a fan favorite all week as he became the only Club professional who qualified for the major to make the cut, while many struggled at the difficult course.

Entering Sunday, Block was in a position to win $500,000, which he gets to cash being a certified pro. The most he said he ever made golfing was $75,000.

Which Golfers Have Had The Most Hole-In-Ones?

Who has the most hole-in-ones is contested, even on the professional tours

Who has had the most hole-in-ones?

The common answer to who has the most hole-in-ones has changed since I were a lad. Not because people have been amassing huge quantities of holes in one to overtake previous record holders, but because the previously commonly accepted answer has rather fallen from favour. Years ago the answer given was normally Norman Manley and 59 holes in one.

However for a hole in one to count it has to be witnessed and be part of an actual round of golf. Norman Manley’s total has stopped being cited due to uncertainty as to how many of his declared aces actually match this criteria. So now, it is “generally accepted” that the most holes in one is 51 by Mancil Davis.

Mancil Davis made many of his holes in one as a child. He had 20 aces by his 20th birthday. He tried to get on the PGA Tour and had a season on the Canadian Tour, but in his own words, his problem was “hitting irons like Doug Sanders and drives like Colonel Sanders.” He became an assistant pro at at Woodlands Inn and Country Club in Texas, where Doug Sanders was Director of Golf, and where Davis would play with golfing biddies Willie Nelson and Evel Knievel.

When insurance salesman John Everhart spotted a gap in the market for hole-in-one insurance he approached Art Wall, the Masters champion of 1959, and maker of 41 holes in one, to help market it. But Wall was out of his price range. Shortly afterwards Everhart read a newspaper article about a Texas pro who had just made his 33rd ace: Mancil Davis. He and Davis, now dubbed “The King of Aces” by Everhart, teamed up to promote the product, Davis’ role being personal appearances at trade shows and golf events.

The PGA Tour only started recording holes in one specifically in 1983. So some earlier holes in one have been lost to the mists of time, although some pre-1983 ones have become part of the official record. So no-one can be totally certain who has made the most holes in one on the PGA Tour either. But the most recorded hole in ones are 10, by Robert Allenby and Hal Sutton.

The figure for the European Tour is also 10, achieved by a 51-year-old Miguel Angel Jimenez at BMW PGA Championship in 2015 when he surpassed Colin Montgomerie’s 9. But the most holes in one on mainstream tour is 11, by Kathy Whitworth, who holds the LPGA record.

Are There Any PGA Tour Pros Without a Hole in One?

Graeme Hay

Written by Graeme Hay | Last Updated: 21/05/2024

Bubba Watson hitting an iron from the fairway

In spite of the fact that he was able to drive the golf ball over 400 yards and win multiple PGA Tour events a 25-year-old Bryson DeChambeau had still never had a hole in one by the time he teed it up for the 2019 Masters.

He finally achieved his first ever hole in one however when he knocked in a 7-iron on the par-16th hole at Augusta but are there still any professionals out there without a hole in one or do most pro golfers have one?

There are no current PGA Tour players without a hole in one in their careers but a number of pros have never had an ace in tournament play. 16 out of the world’s top 50 golfers, including multiple major champions Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Bubba Watson and Brooks Koepka, have never had a hole-in-one in a PGA Tour event.

Given the skill levels of the elite pros and the supreme accuracy they have with their irons in particular it would be a highly unusual scenario for them not to record at least one hole in one across their long careers which can often span decades.

Indeed many professional golfers have been lucky enough (if you can call it luck!) to achieve the feat on many occasions.

But take a closer look at the hole in one stats and you will find that they are still not a common occurrence even amongst the best players in the world and that the pros themselves often only really care about the ones they have made in PGA Tour and other major tour events!

There Are Great Pros Without A PGA Tour Hole in One

A hole in one in golf – or an ‘ace’ as it is often referred to – is not a very common occurrence even amongst the best professional players in the world.

And a simple look at the basic dimensions of what the sport involves shows why.

The golf ball itself is only 1.68 inches or 42.67 millimetres in diameter and can weigh no more than 1.62 ounces or 45.93 grams.

To achieve a hole in one then requires a player to put that small ball in one shot into a hole, well over 100 yards and often over 200 yards away, which itself only 4.25 inches or 107.95 mm in diameter.

So as you can see it is not an easy thing to do even for the very best players in the world.

“A hole in one is great but it is like trying to find a unicorn, it’s very rare.” Jason Day, former USPGA Champion

And while virtually all pro golfers have had a hole in one a hole in one at some point in their golf careers the pros themselves tend to mainly care about the aces they have achieved on the PGA Tour or in other tournament play.

Dustin Johnson for example has had 13 holes in one since he started playing golf but says he only really counts and cares about the four he has achieved in tournaments.

Taking that as the benchmark, and the fact that there have been only 1726 holes in one recorded in professional golf tournaments since the first by Tom Morris Jr. in 1868, the stats show that there are a number of top pros who have never had a hole in one on the PGA Tour.

And the list of pros without a hole in one in a PGA Tour event includes:

  • Collin Morikawa
  • Cameron Smith
  • Rory McIlroy
  • Hideki Matsuyama
  • Billy Horschel
  • Brooks Koepka
  • Daniel Berger
  • Matt Fitzpatrick
  • Kevin Kisner
  • Talor Gooch
  • Russell Henley
  • Cameron Young
  • Lucas Herbert
  • Richard Bland
  • Bubba Watson.

Also while some pros have had the best possible start when it comes to achieving an ace on the PGA Tour event it does not always mean that their luck will continue.

For example on only the third day of his PGA Tour career world No.1 Scottie Scheffler, who was only 17 at the time and still an amateur, aced the second hole at the 2014 Byron Nelson Championship.

But since then, despite his multiple PGA Tour wins and Masters triumph, he hasn’t managed to get another hole in one on Tour.

Given how difficult a feat a hole in one is to achieve for regular players amateurs may think it’s a bit rude of pros to only care about the aces they make in tournaments.

There is a good reason for this though. When PGA Tour players have a hole in one at events these days there tends to be a prize on offer and very frequently it is a prize which will benefit one of the fans or a charity.

At some tournaments multiple thousands of dollars are donated to charity on the successful player’s behalf while in others a pro’s ace will win one lucky fan a year’s worth of their mortgage payments.

And when Jason Day won a car for his hole in one at the 2017 BMW Championship he gave it away in return for the payment of a youngster’s college tuition!

Breakdown of Pros Hole in One Records on PGA Tour

When it comes to studying the games of the best golfers in the world we often focus on how far they hit the ball, how many putts they hole and of course how great their scores are but it is often fun to compare less common stuff like how many holes in one they have all had.

Being superb players who have played the game at the highest level, often for a long time, it is inevitable that some of them have had a large number of aces but the pros tend to focus on the number of holes in one they have had in tournament play versus the number they have had over their entire careers.

But when it comes to looking at those numbers even the top pros haven’t had as many holes in one as you may think.

So here is a detailed list of how many holes in one today’s top pros and some of the greatest players ever to play the game, including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Phil Mickelson, have had in PGA Tour events.

Fun PGA Tour Hole in One Facts and Figures

Although holes in one are rare things even for the best players in the world there are still some pros who have managed to achieve the feat more than their fair share of times.

4-time PGA Tour winner Robert Allenby and former USPGA champion Hal Sutton hold the record for the most holes-in-one on the PGA Tour with 10 each. 1994 meanwhile is the year when the most holes in one were achieved in a single PGA Tour season with 44 aces being recorded.

And the records for holes in one don’t stop there and unbelievably some of the top pros have even managed to achieve an ace more than once in a single round.

even managed to achieve an ace more than once in a single round.

Brian Harman made two holes in one in the 4th round of the 2015 Barclays Tournament. After holing a 7-iron from 184 yards at the 3rd hole he hit a 4-hybrid 220 yards for his second hole-in-one in the same round at the 14th. Yusaku Miyazato and Bill Whedon are the only other golfers to achieve this feat in PGA Tour history.

Unbelievably Andrew Magee has also managed to get a hole in one at a par 4 in PGA Tournament play recording the ace at the 17th hole in round 1 of the Pheonix Open in 2001.

And some pros have even managed to kick off their PGA Tour careers by getting a hole in one in their very first professional start although one of the names on that list should probably not have suprised us too much looking back.

In his very first outing as a professional on the PGA Tour at the 1996 Greater Milwaukee Open Tiger Woods announced himself with a hole in one at the 14th hole of his 4th round!

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Six climate protesters stormed the 18th green while the leaders were lining up their putts for the final hole of regulation at the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship on Sunday, spraying smoke and powder and delaying the finish for about five minutes.

The protesters waved smoke bombs that left white and red residue on the putting surface before Scottie Scheffler, Tom Kim and Akshay Bhatia finished their rounds. Some wore white T-shirts with the words “NO GOLF ON A DEAD PLANET” in black lettering on the front.

“I was scared for my life,” Bhatia said. “I didn’t even really know what was happening. ... But thankfully the cops were there and kept us safe, because that’s, you know, that’s just weird stuff.”

The PGA Tour issued a statement thanking the Cromwell Police Department “for their quick and decisive action” and noting that there was no damage to the 18th green that affected either the end of regulation or the playoff hole.

Scheffler, who was arrested during a traffic stop at the PGA Championship , also praised the officers.

“From my point of view, they got it taken care of pretty dang fast, and so we were very grateful for that,” said Scheffler, the world’s No. 1 player, who beat Kim on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff for his sixth victory of the year.

Image

“When something like that happens, you don’t really know what’s happening, so it can kind of rattle you a little bit,” Scheffler said. “That can be a stressful situation, and you would hate for the tournament to end on something weird happening because of a situation like that. I felt like Tom and I both tried to calm each other down so we could give it our best shot there on 18.”

Extinction Rebellion, an activist group with a history of disrupting events around the world, claimed responsibility for the protest. In a statement emailed to The Associated Press, the group blamed climate change for an electrical storm that injured two people at a home near the course on Saturday.

“This was of course due to increasingly unpredictable and extreme weather conditions,” the statement said. “Golf, more than other events, is heavily reliant on good weather. Golf fans should therefore understand better than most the need for strong, immediate climate action.”

After the protesters were tackled by police and taken off, Scheffler left a potential 26-foot clincher from the fringe on the right edge of the cup, then tapped in for par. Kim, who trailed by one stroke heading into the final hole, sank a 10-foot birdie putt to tie Scheffler and force the playoff.

Kim said the protest took his mind off the pressure.

“It kind of slowed things down,” he said. “It took the meaning of the putt away for a second. Because for the past 17 and a half holes all you’re thinking about is golf, and suddenly when that happens your mind goes into a complete — like, you’re almost not even playing golf anymore. I thought it was a dream for a second.”

The crowd surrounding the 18th green heckled the protesters by yelling profanities and cheered the police who intervened. After the players putted out in regulation, workers with leaf blowers came out to clean off the remaining powder.

The hole location was moved for the playoff, which was also on No. 18. Scheffler parred the first hole of sudden death to win.

“They left a lot of marks on the greens, which is not right for us players — especially when two guys are trying to win a golf tournament,” Kim said. “But I’m very grateful for the tour and the tour security for handling that really well and making us players feel a lot safer.”

Climate protesters disrupt play at 18th hole of PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship

P rotesters ran onto the 18th green in the final round of the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, Sunday, leaving a powdery substance on the putting surface and delaying play for several minutes.

Video from broadcaster CBS showed several of the six demonstrators wearing shirts reading: “No golf on a dead planet.”

Extinction Rebellion, a climate activist group, said it was behind the incident.

Police quickly removed the protesters, allowing the final group, including leaders Tom Kim and Scottie Scheffler to finish the hole in a tie and move to a playoff.

The pair teed off on the 18th again and Scheffler went on to win.

He said he and Kim helped to steady each other as the police worked quickly.

“You don’t really know what is going on, you don’t really understand the situation,” Scheffler said in a post-match interview with CBS Sports. “There’s people running around everywhere and you don’t really know what’s going to happen.”

He credited the police with doing a great job to handcuff and remove the protesters.

The protesters were accused of one count each of criminal mischief in the first degree, criminal trespass in the first degree and breach of Peace, according to a news release from the Cromwell Police Department.

They each were released on a bond of $5,000 and are due in court July 1.

Kim told reporters it was like a dream but the moment temporarily took his mind off the importance of making his putt because he was worried about people getting hurt.

In a social media video, officers can be seen wrestling three protesters on the ground. Another protester is tackled by an officer and drops a bag they were holding. Fans can be heard booing and yelling obscenities at the protesters.

Sina Sadri, the 19-year-old fan who recorded the video, said he had looked away and when he returned his eyes to the green area there was a guy in the bunker.

“I instinctively took out my phone and started recording – and the mayhem unfolded,” he told CNN.

He described the demonstrators as using devices that left behind powder, not paint. There was a firework-like smell in the air, he said.

At the players’ news conference, Scheffler said the initial chaos with people running around was a little rattling.

“You don’t know if they’re peaceful, you don’t know what they’re doing, you have no idea what’s going on, so it can be a bit stressful,” he told reporters.

A PGA Tour senior spokesperson told CNN the protesters were “immediately arrested.”

“The powder on the green was removed, resulting in no damage to the 18th green,” Joel Schuchmann said. “Our thanks to the Cromwell Police Department for their quick and decisive action.”

CNN has reached out to law enforcement for more information.

In a statement released shortly after the incident, Extinction Rebellion said it was trying to draw attention to climate change.

“With this action, Extinction Rebellion is NOT protesting any individual or organization. Rather, the protest highlights the worldwide danger of climate breakdown,” the group said in its statement.

“Golf, more than other events, is heavily reliant on good weather. Golf fans should therefore understand better than most the need for strong, immediate climate action,” the group added.

Extinction Rebellion has a reputation for attention-grabbing tactics. Its activists have made international headlines for past protests including dumping green dye into Venice’s Grand Canal , gluing themselves to a Picasso painting , smashing bank windows and spraying fake blood over buildings to call attention to climate issues.

“At this point, the sole option remaining is to engage in unconventional forms of protest that bring attention to the severity of the climate emergency,” the group said in its release.
