PGA Tour stop in Mexico moving to the LIV Tour

PGA Tour stop in Mexico moving to the LIV Tour

We know all about the world’s best golfers moving from the PGA Tour to the LIV Tour.  Now, the Mayakoba Golf Course in Playa del Carmen, south of Cancun, is going to the LIV Tour as well. According to Adam Schupak of Golfweek,  there are plans for Mayakoba to host the first LIV Tournament of 2023 sometime in February. The projected dates right now are February 24 to 26. That would be the same weekend the PGA Tour would have the Honda Classic, where Austria’s Sepp Straka is the defending champion.

Mexico already has connections to the LIV Tour. Mexican golfers Abraham Ancer and Carlos Ortiz joined the LIV Tour last year. There had been speculation that the LIV Tour would have a tournament in Mexico in September , but it now appears there will be one in February.

Now it will be interesting if there would be a title sponsor for the Mayakoba Golf Classic in 2023. Do you think there will be one? If you owned a company, would you consider aligning with the LIV Tour?

Tell us what you think in the comments below.

PGA Tour Update: Will Zalatoris Exits Mexico Open in an Alarming Move

T he PGA Tour is moving to the south border of Mexico for the next week! After the $20 million showdown at Palisade Pacific, the next stop on the PGA Tour will be the Mexico Open at Vidanta Vallarta. The event is only two years old and will have the reigning champion, Tony Finau, defending his title.

It is a full-field event of the Tour and will have 132 players teeing up. As the field has fewer highly ranked golfers, it could be a breakthrough chance for any golfer to take his first win. Will Zalatoris could have been among them and could have contested for his second victory on the PGA Tour.

Will Zalatoris to miss the Mexico Open

Will Zalatoris will not be playing at the Mexico Open at Vidanta. The PGA Tour recently released the news of Zalatoris’s withdrawal on their X handle (formerly Twitter) via PGA Tour Communications. The Tour did not reveal the reason behind his decision not to participate in the event; however, his sudden withdrawal can be linked to the recent death of a close family member and the PGA Tour pro’s choice to be with his family during this difficult time. Another possible reason for Zalatoris’s exit from the Mexico Open could be his back injury, which had previously forced him to leave the 2023 season after the Masters in April.

It would have been his fifth start in the 2024 season. Zalatoris had taken the lead in the closing rounds of the Genesis Invitational. However, Hideki Matsuyama snatched his chances of victory with nine birdies. The 27-year-old had to suffice with a runner-up finish and was three strokes away from the leader. Zalatoris had a score of 14 under 270.

Amidst attempting a victory at the Riviera Country Club, Zalatoris was grieving the loss of a family member. In the post-match conference, he relayed that his family wouldn’t have been with him even if he had won. Regardless, after playing the event through varied emotions, Zalatoris shared an important lesson he learned this week.

Will Zalatoris appreciate life amidst mourning death

Will Zalatoris knew about the death of a family member when he started the opening round at the Genesis Invitational. However, he pushed through his emotions and gave his best on the greens. The 27-year-old said, “ This whole week was for her.” While he was struggling to control his emotions, Zalatoris expressed that the death “ was very unexpected.”

However, even after the curve ball was thrown at him, he had learned to be grateful. Zalatoris said the unexpected nature of life “j ust shows you life’s short and appreciate the moments.” He had shared that his family was in Southwest and after the withdrawal, Zalatoris may join them there too. With all that he has been through, Zalatoris will pass this storm as well.

2024 PGA Championship picks, field, predictions, odds: Golf expert avoids Scottie Scheffler at Valhalla

Patrick mcdonald just locked in his pga championship 2024 best bets for the second golf major of the year at valhalla golf club.

scottie-scheffler-3-usatsi.jpg

Brooks Koepka will try to defend his title successfully and join an elite group when he competes in the 2024 PGA Championship, which begins Thursday at Valhalla Golf Club. Koepka, who recorded back-to-back victories in this tournament in 2018 and 2019, is hoping to repeat the feat that only has been accomplished by Tiger Woods (1999-2000, 2006-07). With another triumph, Keopka would join Walter Hagen (five), Jack Nicklaus (five) and Woods as the only golfers to win the PGA Championship at least four times. The 34-year-old also would become just the 15th player with six or more victories in major tournaments, as he captured the U.S. Open title in 2017 and 2018.

Koepka is 12-1 and Scottie Scheffler, who won the Masters for the second time in his career last month, is the 3-1 favorite in the latest 2024 PGA Championship odds. Rory McIlroy is next at 6-1, while Jon Rahm (10-1), Xander Schauffle (12-1), and Ludvig Aberg (12-1) also are among the top PGA Championship 2024 contenders at 12-1. Before making any 2024 PGA Championship picks or bets, you need to see the PGA Championship 2024 predictions and best bets from golf insider Patrick McDonald .

McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in 2022 after stops at NBC Sports and RyderCup.com. Covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and more. Featured weekly on the Early Wedge, he has given out numerous winners already in 2024, including Jake Knapp (50-1) at the Mexico Open. Anyone who has followed his lead is way up.

Now, McDonald has focused his attention on the 2024 PGA Championship field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can only see them here .

Top 2024 PGA Championship expert picks

One shocker from McDonald: The expert is fading Scottie Scheffler, who is priced too short to back in such a deep and talented 2024 PGA Championship field. It's difficult not to go with Scheffler, who is ranked No. 1 in the world and has won four of his last five events. One of those victories came at the Masters last month, when the 27-year-old shot a 4-under 68 in the final round to finish four strokes ahead of Ludvig Aberg and win the tournament for the second time in three years. However, McDonald does not find the odds on Scheffler very appealing. "He's the rightful favorite, as he's the best player in the world by a very wide margin, but I can't get behind Scheffler at +300," McDonald told SportsLine.  See who else to fade here .

On the other hand, McDonald loves the value on Xander Schauffele at 12-1. Ranked fourth in the world, Schauffele is on a 39-start drought since posting back-to-back victories at the Travelers Championship and Scottish Open in the summer of 2022. But the 30-year-old has posted eight top-10 finishes in 12 events this season, including finishing as the runner-up at the Players Championship and last week's Wells Fargo Championship. "He has been the second-best player in the world from a statistical sense and is as good of a sure thing when it comes to entering the weekend in contention," McDonald said.  See who else to back here .

How to make 2024 PGA Championship golf picks

McDonald has locked in his best bets for the PGA Championship 2024 and also has selected a longshot who's priced well over 50-1. This golfer "has made significant strides in his game" this year. If this player can pull off a stunning victory, he would cash in huge for anyone who backs him.  You can only see the picks at SportsLine .

So which players should you target or avoid for the 2024 PGA Championship, and which golfer in the PGA Championship 2024 field could bring a huge payday of more than 50-1? Check out the odds below, then visit SportsLine to see Patrick McDonald's top picks for PGA Championship 2024, all from the expert who has given out numerous winners already this year .

PGA Tour a “lonely place” compared to European circuit, per DP World Tour pro

Scotsman Robert MacIntyre, who earned PGA Tour status this year, referred to the American based circuit as a “lonely place.”

Robert MacIntyre, PGA Tour, THE PLAYERS

Thanks to his superb play on the DP World Tour a season ago, which included a runner-up finish to Rory McIlroy at the Genesis Scottish Open , Robert MacIntyre earned PGA Tour membership for the 2024 season.

But playing on the PGA Tour has not been the best experience for MacIntyre, compared to the comfortable confines of the DP World Tour.

“It’s completely different,” MacIntyre explained to Bunkered , a Scottish golf publication.

“When you’re on the DP World Tour, it’s very friendly. Everyone is together. We’re all traveling the world. If we’re struggling with certain things, we speak to folk around us.”

So far this season, MacIntyre, who played in his first Ryder Cup in 2023 and did not lose a match, has only two top-10 finishes to his name. He tied for sixth at the Mexico Open and eighth at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Robert MacIntyre, Ryder Cup

But he missed the cut at The Players Championship and did not qualify for The Masters . He also has not met the criteria to play in any Signature Event so far this season. Instead, he tied for 32nd at the Puerto Rico Open, held when Scottie Scheffler triumphed at Bay Hill.

MacIntyre will also play at the Myrtle Beach Classic this week, not the Wells Fargo Championship , which bodes an elite 69-player field.

“You come out here to the PGA Tour, and it’s all so unfamiliar,” added MacIntyre.

“There’s less chatting. There’s less dinners. There’s just less of that big family feel that you get on the European Tour.”

The European Ryder Cup team specifically prides itself on team camaraderie and chemistry. By extension, those principles spread the DP World Tour, where the top European players rise through the ranks.

“Sitting in player dining, you do it in Europe and you’ve got all the Scottish boys, you’ve got all the British boys,” MacIntyre added.

Robert MacIntyre, PGA Tour

“A lot of the European guys, if you’re sitting on your own, they will come and join you... Out [on the PGA Tour], because you don’t know many folks, you don’t know them in that same kind of depth, they don’t come to sit with you. It does become a lonely place on the golf side of it.”

The golf courses are obviously different, too.

“It is what it is. You’ve got to get on with it. There are a lot of other things. New golf courses,” MacIntyre explained.

“Over here, they are pretty much all new, and then you’ve got the different grasses. Obviously, I was not brought up playing a lot of Bermuda, grainy grass, pitching, putting. It’s just completely different. But it’s a learning curve.”

Hopefully, MacIntyre’s experience of playing golf in the United States will improve as time passes. But for now, the Scotsman continues to struggle to grow accustomed to the difficulties of American professional golf—something that numerous European players have toiled with before and likely will do so in the future.

Yet, the Scotsman knows that plenty of opportunity awaits within the 50 states.

“It’s a great place to play golf. It’s obviously where the best players in the world are. It’s where you can make more money,” MacIntyre said.

“It’s a different environment for me, but I’m just trying to enjoy it as much as I can and learn as much as I can, week in and week out.”
