Customer Reviews

As a parent who travels constantly with their children, we are moving from place to place and value their healthy sleep. Using the Phil & Ted Traveller, we have found the versatility through all the ages of our baby has been absolutely great. From a newborn next to us in a hotel room, to a toddler with an ear infection where I could unzip the side and lay with her, the options make it parent/baby friendly. I also do love how light it is, easily fits in a suitcase or stroller bag, and so simple to set up.

Hi Anna, it's great to hear the 4-in-1 feature of the phil&teds traveller has helped you through all stages from newborn to toddler. We think event with all the added features it's still pretty neat and compact and perfect for travel. PTx

Terrible assembly instructions, mattress cover had hole in stitching, only used it the first night so will reserve judgement on it overall for a bit yet

Phil & teds traveller: best light-weight toddler sleep solution.

See our road test of the Phil & Teds Traveller light weight travel cot| Product Review | OurGlobetrotters.Com

Finally, a travel cot that really does help you travel lighter

For years we have been guilty of lugging an overweight, out of date “travel cot” across the continents with us – you know the ones which are really a playpen ?  Not on every trip, but when we know we will be staying at multiple different locations, or we are unsure whether our accommodation can provide us with a safe sleeping solution, we will bring our own.

We were dreading the thought of taking our portacot with us to Australia this past summer. We were staying at 5 different locations over the space of a month, we needed to fit everything into a regular sedan vehicle to get from A to B, and I needed to take two flights solo with all the kids and luggage; we had to find a better sleep solution for our youngest who was still only 12 months old.

Cue a new generation of travel cot

We were delighted to road test the Phil & Teds Traveller TM  Portable Travel Cot  with our 1-year-old Master J over the summer (And on our recent adventure to South Africa . And when Master J had to bunk in with us when his air conditioner broke. And when we had to stay with family while moving house.  I think he has slept in this more than his own bed the past six months!)

Phil & Teds Traveller Review | Product Reviews | OurGlobetrotters.Net

How does the Phil & Teds Traveller work?

Unlike what we’ll call a conventional “portacot”  that opens in one piece (hands up who has stood there for hours fruitlessly trying to yank those sides into place?) The Phil & Teds Traveller TM comes packed more like a tent in an easy carry bag.

There are 10 interconnecting aluminium pieces that need to be clicked together to make the frame, then threaded through the cot netting, with a self-inflating mattress.

If your construction skills are seriously lacking this may not be the cot for you – however – how you’ve got to the point of having a baby and not having learned some construction skills from Ikea I don’t know….

If you follow the clearly labelled instructions, it is very easy to understand.  By your second or third time, you’ll be a pro. If you are finding the construction a little difficult and the parts aren’t easily sliding together, you could always spray a small amount of WD40 or lubricant on the joints but we never found this necessary, maybe because of repeated regular use.

Phil & Teds Traveller Features

  • The aluminium frame pieces are incredibly light , making the overall weight of the product only 3.2kg.
  • It does have a fold-down side though we never quite saw the purpose of this given our aim was to contain him inside the cot – perhaps if you are camping next to the cot and want to reach into your baby from the side?
  • As an add-on you can also purchase a UV sun shade cover , great for if you want to have your baby sleeping outside, or protected from insects (we did not test this feature).
  • Suitable up to three years of age . We will easily get another year or two use out of this product with our last child.
  • A downside as noted by a few people who have been in a room with it is the feet step out deceptively far and can be a tripping hazard.
  • The constructed dimensions (footprint) are 137cm x 85cm x 66cm, with a sleep space of 115cm x 57cm x 66cm.
  • Only small criticism, the self-inflating mattress is brilliant for setting up quickly, but I found requires a fair bit of elbow grease to get all the air out; it really needs to be quite flat to neatly fit back in the nylon carry bag. I have mastered the technique of taking the mattress out first and kneeling on it while deconstructing the rest of the cot to save time!
  • The carry bag is really very thin , you might want to get in the habit of checking you don’t have any legs sticking out at awkward angles that could rip or damage the bag in transit.

Comparison to Similar Travel Cots

Several readers have asked us how this product compares to the Lotus Travel Crib and Portable Playard . We haven’t had personal experience using this particular brand, but can confirm from friends it’s also super light and portable.

Additionally, it only takes about 15 seconds to build, which is much faster than the Phil & Teds!

Globetrotters Recommend

The huge selling feature of the Phil & Teds Traveller TM   is its weight.   We have easily been able to pack it away either inside a suitcase or check it as an extra baby item without problems.

Now I am used to the construction element, I do find I can pack and unpack it quicker than my old cot that would constantly jam and cause frustration – I have it down to about 3 minutes either end which as any of you know trying to pack up a room with kids in it is no mean feat!

So if you’re looking for a lightweight, easy to pack sleep solution for your infant you really can’t go wrong with the Phil & Teds Traveller TM  Portable Travel Cot.

After seeing an ad on Facebook – yes really – I bought the Lotus Everywhere from Guava: http://www.guavafamily.com/products/lotus-everywhere-travel-crib We were about to relocate to the UK and I knew there had to be something better than the oh so HEAVY standard travel cot. The differences between the Lotus and this Phil & Ted model seem to be that the Lotus: – is all one piece plus the mattress, which means no lost pieces – mattress is just foam and lays on the bottom of the cot – not an issue for the 3 months our toddler slept on it full time – is 5.9 kg… so a little heavier… but the bag is good quality and has backpack straps! I don’t know how the price compares – I got the Lotus for $189 including an organic sheet. The only thing I don’t like is that attaching the mattress with the little velcro tabs is a pain so we don’t normally do it. Overall – for any family that travels, investing in a lightweight travel cot is 100% worth it!!

' src=

Thanks for that interesting comparison Casey. It really is a toss up between ease of construction and weight – for us weight now wins every time but I can certainly see the benefits the Lotus has too, thanks for sharing.

' src=

This looks like something we need! Especially since the side comes down open – our little guy hates being constricted in a crib or pack n play. Great review!

Thanks Lo – I think you would really enjoy it, perfect for all sorts of travel and super lightweight making it easy to bring along

' src=

Not to mention a baby who learn how to stand can easily rip holes through the meshing…

I think the meshing is pretty robust on this model

Phil & Teds Traveller Travel Cot review

cot

This cot bed offers an unusual combination of robust, long lasting and truly portable. Three real mums tested this travel cot in the April 2015 issue of M&B magazine.

A really light and compact option, the sides of this travel cot can be completely zipped away.

This allows easier access than standard travel cots, but also transforms the cot into a fun daytime play space. With gently sloping mesh sides, which let you see your baby easily, this is suitable from birth to three years.

The cot base, onto which an inflatable mattress fits, is slightly raised off the ground. The carry bag fits into very small spaces, including the overhead locker on a plane journey, making this a good choice for frequent fliers.

Corinne Hills, 37, from Sheffield, is mum to Arthur, 14 months, Wilfred, three, Tobias, five, and Tom, 15, said: ‘Perfect if you need something light and small enough to pop in a large suitcase. But I found this cot complicated and time-consuming to assemble.’

Roz Walker, 32, from Glasgow, is mum to Aaron, seven months, said: ‘The inflatable mattress is excellent, but securing it to the base is quite fiddly. This is so lightweight and really compact, but it took us a while to set up.’

Naomi Johnson, 32, from Peterborough, is mum to Logan, 10 weeks, and Elizabeth, 11, said: ‘I love that the sides can be removed. It’s great for playtime and for co-sleeping families. It’s also easy to use, lightweight and compact, but I’d prefer a thicker mattress.

UPDATED! Phil & Teds Traveller (Travel Cot) Review

UPDATE #2 (05/05/2011):

First Update:

This post has been updated!  The original post was written about a year ago.  We have now been using our Phil & Ted’s Traveler (Travel Cot) for more than a year and have updated this review to reflect our experiences.  Keep reading to find out why we consider the Phil and Ted’s Traveler (Travel Cot) to be the best piece of baby/toddler travel equipment we own!  (Thank you for shopping on Amazon by following one of the links in this review.  Every item purchased helps to support www.ianandwendy.com !)

We have now been using the Phil & Ted’s Traveler (Travel Cot) for more than a year.  We truly feel that this is the single best piece of baby/toddler travel gear we’ve bought.

The Phil & Ted’s Traveler is incredibly lightweight.  So much so that you can easily carry baby and their bed at the same time!  Making that especially easy is the awesome carry bag it comes with.  It has a shoulder strap that makes it super simple to carry.  While heading out to spend the day with family, Wendy has often slung the Traveler over one shoulder and carried our daughter out to the car in the other.  Super convenient!

The light weight also comes in handy when you’re trying to keep your luggage under the 50lb luggage limit.  Sure, many of our trips we’re backpacking and not anywhere close to the limit.  However, we often go back “home” to Canada to visit family.  On those trips we take much nicer clothing and many more outfits.  That all adds up to a lot more luggage.  The compact size of the Phil & Ted’s Traveler and its light weight really help.

Because the Phil & Ted’s Traveler doesn’t use sheets, it’s super easy to clean.   In the event of an “incident” you simply wipe it down with a disinfectant wipe and you’re done!  This becomes an especially nice feature if you happen to be exhausted from a long flight, or it’s the middle of the night.  Not only is it easy to clean, but since you don’t need to bring sheets, your luggage will be lighter, too.  Not having to use sheets also means you won’t have to figure out where the heck to wash them while you’re traveling and you won’t need to bring (or buy) extras for emergencies.

When we first chose the Phil & Ted’s Traveler we were concerned that the time to put it together/take it apart might drive us crazy – especially when we were exhausted after a long flight.  Well, we’ve now done it many, many, many times and we find it very easy to do.  We quickly got the time down to under 5 minutes and are now down to about 2-3 minutes (even with “help” from our daughter!)

The size is also very generous.  Our daughter is very tall for her age and is no where close to outgrowing it at 18-months-old.  Our friend’s 3-year-old has also taken a nap in it and fit just fine – even though she is also tall for her age.  We expect our daughter to easily be able to sleep in a regular bed by the time she outgrows the Phil & Ted’s Traveler.  The size also allows enough room for her to play for a while if we need her to be safe in one place for a bit.

Not only has our Travel Cot already been to four countries, but it is in daily use as our regular “play pen” at home.  It’s so lightweight you can easily pick it up and move it between rooms/floors with one hand –while holding baby in the other!  In fact, we have been so happy with our Phil & Ted’s Traveler that we plan on buying another one now that baby #2 will soon be here!

Original Post:

When we started shopping for baby equipment one of the first things we knew we’d need was a travel cot.  Travel is a big part of our lives and we wanted to be able to continue that with our daughter.  We looked at 2 travel cots – the Phil & Teds and the Baby Bjorn. The Phil & Teds requires assembly – something we weren’t too thrilled about facing at the end of a long day of traveling.  The Baby Bjorn is SUPER easy to assemble – it basically just springs open and is ready to use.  BUT – it’s a lot heavier at 11lbs. vs. the 6 lb Phil & Teds.  So, we chose the Phil & Teds and hoped that the set-up wouldn’t drive us crazy.

The cot comes apart into pieces like a tent and fits into a bag that has a shoulder strap for carrying.  It packed easily into our  large suitcase and is also small enough to fit into our big travel backpacks.  Before we left we practiced putting it together.  It took us more than 20 minutes and required quite a bit of strength – we weren’t impressed and left it assembled for a while, dreading taking it back apart again.  On this first trip with it we had to set it up and take it apart 4 times.  Each time it was faster and easier.  By the end of the trip Ian was down to under 5 minutes – making us very happy we chose the lighter weight over ease of use.

The mattress is a mostly self-inflating air mattress that actually fits into a pocket in the bottom of the cot.  The baby actually lies on the nylon bottom of the cot and you can’t use a sheet.  Although this would seem uncomfortable, our daughter slept well and seemed happy to be put down in it while awake, too.  It also makes for VERY easy clean-up!

The cot has a side flap that can zipper open so you don’t have to lean over to pick up your child.  We didn’t use it, but we can imagine it coming in handy with an older, heavier child – particularly since the cot is big enough to be used by children up to 3 years of age.  You can also secure it to the ground with stakes and it comes with a zippered top flap with UV protection so that you could use the cot on the beach for example.

Overall, we are very happy with our Phil & Teds Traveller and are happy to have such a light, easy to use, safe bed for our daughter away from home!

Do you have a Phil & Ted’s Traveler ?  Do you use a different travel bed for your baby or toddler?  Please share your experiences – we’d love to hear from you!

Hey I thought this is a good review. I am google-ling around for a travel cot for my baby and came upon this website. We brought him on a few trips before and used the cots provided by the hotel but they were in such a terrible state. I felt so bad having him to sleep in that cot (which I was not even sure if it was clean). I will check it in my local stores. We are going on a field trip soon.

Thank you! We’re glad you found our review helpful. Good luck in your search, and please let us know where/if you find it. You never know who else could use the tip!

Thank You for the great review. I will be buying one for sure. We go camping every year and also will be staying in a couple of hotels so it seems this travel cot is the way to go. Cheers, Michelle

Glad we could help! Happy Travels!

Thank you for your excellent and honest review! My husband and I travel extensively to third world locations for extended periods for work, and bring our 6 month old daughter with us whenever possible. Have any thoughts on travel high chairs? We have been using a “My Little Seat” but would really find a tray for self-feeding useful. Phil and Ted make a “Lobster” and a “MeToo” have you used or seen either?

Wendy replied on November 18th, 2010 10:21 pm :

You’re welcome! We’re so glad you found our review helpful! We know how difficult it can be to figure out which baby equipment is truly worth the investment. We actually have the “My Little Seat” and really should have reviewed it. You comment/questions inspired us to! You can find our complete answer in our new post Travel High Chairs and Why We Don’t Use One .

Good luck with your travels! We’d love to hear any tips you have or discover along the way!

We are also extremely happy with our Phil&Ted Travel Cribs. We have twins and so we very much wanted something compact and lightweight. We’ve been using these cribs for a lot a travel during the past year and they are the best! There is definitely a learning period for the assembly of them, but we quickly became experts and can put them together in minutes. (Plus, we had more practice, putting together two at a time!) I thought that sleeping directly on the nylon might be uncomfortable, but neither of our kids seem to mind it. In fact, they sleep as if they’re in their cribs at home, so I guess they’re comfortable. I like the fact that the sleeping surface lies directly on the floor and is not up on legs — there’s no sagging and it can support a lot more weight. And these cribs still look new even after all this use!

Hi there – thanks for your review it was very helpful. I am also deciding between the Phil & Ted and the Baby Bjorn travel cots. My biggest concern with the Phil & Ted is the “plastic” matress and as we are travelling to Thailand I am concerned this will cause our son to sweat too much. The Bjorn has a cooton matress and obviously will not cause him to sweat as much. Did you have problem with your daughter sweating whilst sleeping in the cot?

Thank you for the review. I am not using this bed for travel as much as for my child care home. I have been looking for something that is easy to move to another room when the children want to play and one needs to sleep. I do have a question though? Have you ever washed the travel bed. I can see it easily comes apart so have you ever put it in your washing machine?

Thank you so much for your review. I have been searching the web for months now trying to figure out a travel crib solution for my son. We travel a lot in the summer and have a one week family vacation planned to be at the beach for a week. I definitely want something with sides as I want to keep my son contained. I am concerned about being in a big house with several flights of stairs. I want to be able to put my son to bed and not worry that he will get up and roam around the house. I’ve been reviewing both Phil & Ted’s and the Baby Bjorn travel cribs. I’ve been leaning towards the Phil and Ted’s as it is longer in length than the Baby Bjorn. My son just turned two and is 36 inches long.

Do you feel that the Phil & Ted’s travel crib is pretty sturdy? My concern is that when my son stands up in the crib and leans against the sides, will the crib tip over? I understand that the mattress is right on the floor so that should help prevent tip over but do you feel the sides are sturdy enough so that they won’t collapse if he leans against it? I’d appreciate any feedback you might have. Thank you.

Having had this wonderful travel bed for two years and used it for both daycare and travel, a couple of comments: Yes, my son at 1.5 years did learn to tip it over when he wanted to get out in the morning. He’s average height and weight. My solution was to rearrange furniture and park it between a bookcase and couch. The best solution to not having corners to tuck a cotton bedsheet under is either sew snaps or Velcro to four corners of both the sheet and the bottom of the bed. Did not try this method but I did use diaper pins pinned onto the waterproof cotton pad from underneath (from inside the zipper compartment) so my son did not have access to the diaper pins. Not very elegant but it worked. A few accidents that he had were absorbed by the pad. So I never needed to wash any part of the bed. Washing it in the washing machine is probably not a good idea… I recommend a summer trip to Sweden/Finland/Norway. All very safe and child-friendly countries.

Thanks for the great review! We travel around a lot too and plan to get this travel cot. PS the white text on the black background is killer to look at 🙂

Emily replied on September 17th, 2011 4:11 pm :

it hurts my eyes 🙂

I am worried about the traveler as a suffocation hazard for an infant. It does not seem like the side fabric is breathable. Do you have a sense of this? Also, the fabric on the bottom seems relatively loose – again another suffocation hazard. What do you think?

Ian replied on June 27th, 2012 2:06 pm :

We were never concerned about suffocation hazards. The material on the bottom is taut, and the air mattress is in a zippered section underneath the cot, so there’s no possibility for a baby to get trapped under the mattress. Even the walls are firm, so we were not concerned about suffocation there either.

Thanks for your comment and please let us know if you have any other questions!

Hi-i’m a little late to the party, but just putting my 2 cents in, as i own one of these. It is quite fiddly to put together (think of it as a tent), but you get better as the time goes by. I chose it because it was for overseas travel, and it’s the lightest and smallest one out there. I wouldn’t use this if i needed to take it up and down every day or so, but we use it for weeks at a time. Love the netting on the top-keeps mozzies out at night so i don’t need to worry (we have travelled to africa and asia with this, and he hasn’t been bitten at night). I found a fab little lady online who custom makes sheets for it-and they are amazing, so my little one isn’t sleeping on the plastic. I have washed the net bits, and they have been fine in the machine, but the rest you can just wipe down.

Phil and Teds Travel Crib Review (Why it’s the Best Travel Crib for Flights & Long-Haul Travel)

The Phil and Teds Traveller travel crib is one of the lightest, most compact and most portable travel cribs on the market. Weighing in at only 6 Ibs, we had to wonder if the company sacrificed usability to keep the weight down. This review is based on 6 months of personally testing it – keep reading to find out what we think and how it performed during our own travel tests.

AT A GLANCE

The phil & teds Traveller crib is a super light and ultra portable travel cot suitable for babies. This compact pack n’ play is good from birth until kids are 35″ (890mm) tall, or around 2-years-old. It’s made from a lightweight aluminum frame, polyester and nylon sides, and a fitted polyester sheet. The sides are made from breathable mesh – great news for safety and comfort. The mattress has a unique self-inflating system, is thermally-insulated for comfort, and is “free from health-hazardous substances,” and the mattress sheet is made from oeko-tex certified polyester. The self-inflating mattress does wonders for the ease of use, and the included carry bag makes transporting it easy. The Traveller’s weight is one of its best features: just 6 pounds (2.8kg)! It measures measures 46″L x 31″W x 24.8H” when assembled. This is super practical for long-haul trips in particular. Learn More

Why Trust Us? What Went Into Our Review

When we decided we’d be doing a lot of international travel with our daughter, we knew we needed to get  a travel play pen . We put a lot of thought into the products we give to our daughter, because we want her to be as safe as possible. From her  crib mattress  and crib sheets to her  baby bathtub ,  bath toys , and the methods we use to clean them – we like to do the research and choose the best! We did the same when it came time to get a travel cot.

We’ve been using the Traveller travel crib for about 6 months now. During that time, we’ve used it in 5 different countries, taken it on 8 flights, 1 road trip, and used it as a crib in 3 Airbnbs and 2 hotels, as well as a play yard at our house.

One thing I love about having this crib is, even when we move locations, our baby still has a familiar bed to sleep in! This is extra helpful when we’re traveling with a sleep regression (or just dealing with a time change ).

This review of the phil & teds Traveller is based on our personal experiences. But other parents seem to agree it’s a great purchase!

we had the phil & teds travel crib and it was a LIFE SAVER for all our travels and late night shenanigans at our friends’ places. — Yashy Murphy (@YashYanthi) May 23, 2018
If you travel, invest in good, light gear. It will make you a happier person (often works for use at home too). Top of that list is Phil & Teds travel crib — Andrew (@asallen) April 5, 2019

The Bottom Line?

We love this travel cot, and recommend it for families traveling by airplane especially. It’s lightweight, compact, and pretty easy to use. Keep reading for a more detailed review or learn more on Amazon. Learn More

Introducing the Traveller Crib

Frame & fabric.

The Traveller has an aluminum frame that’s super light and easily collapsible. Setting up the frame is like setting up a tent – you have to start with the tent poles (although it takes much less time than a tent, in my experience)! This is a key factor in making this a light and portable choice that’s great for packing and travel. While it takes longer than setting up other lightweight travel cribs, such as the BabyBjorn or the Guava Lotus , this allows it to be more compact for travel than those other two. When you take the legs apart, the crib packs up super compact. If you’re used to a “normal” pack and play like the 4moms play yard , you might even be a bit shocked to see how small this goes!

The aluminum legs have sturdy plastic feet which attach to the Traveller’s side panels with thick elastic loops. This construction ensures the Traveller is quite sturdy when assembled and standing. Our daughter was young when we used it, so I don’t have experience with her standing in it or trying to climb out of it . However, overall we were happy with the sturdiness based on our experiences.

Polyester and nylon make up the sides. Thick nylon wraps the top crib edge (frame) and synthetic mesh forms the breathable side panels.

Mesh Side Panels

The mesh is a great feature in all climates, as it allows ventilation and airflow throughout the crib (ventilation may be  a factor in preventing SIDS ).

Our review includes some hot weather testing in Mexico. We found this feature helps keep your child cool, and certainly gave us some extra peace of mind when we used it with a 4.5-month baby in Cabo. We let her sleep naked, just in a diaper , and she stayed perfectly comfortable!

Another awesome feature is the zip down side panel. On one side, the mesh panel zips fully open, giving easier access to mattress level when you placing your baby in the crib (or taking him or her out).

When you’re not using the bed, the mesh rolls up to be quite compact, so it all fits easily in the carry bag.

Mattress & Bedding

The mattress itself is quite unique. It’s “self-inflating,” which means no messing around with air pumps (or blowing it up yourself). And it is supported by the floor, which means this pack n play doesn’t have an upper weight limit you have to watch out for. It also meets all safety regulations and is quite firm once inflated. If you feel the need to try to make it more comfortable , don’t put anything in the crib. We occasionally would stand it on top of blanket if the floor was particularly cold, although I can’t say whether the company would approve of that or not.

According to the company, the mattress is “free from health-hazardous substances.” Unfortunately, they don’t tell you what it  is  made from, which is a shame.

The mattress sheet also has a lot to love. To start with, it’s a slip-on design, so you know it’s going to fit tight with no loose (and hazardous) fabric around your baby. It’s made from an “oeko-tex approved”  polyester . OEKO-TEX® has multiple certifications, so the language used on phil & ted’s website isn’t particularly helpful in understanding how toxin-free the crib sheet is.

Using the phil & teds Traveller Crib

The Traveller feels sturdy and well-made, and I feel pretty confident it’s going to outlast our baby’s ability to use it (when she’s two or three years old). If we have another baby, or pass it on to another family, I expect it will last for their kids too – it’s a well-made piece of nursery furniture, although certainly not a proper crib .

Setting it Up

There are plenty of reviews out there criticizing the Traveller for being difficult to set up. We haven’t found that to be the case. phil & teds have released multiple versions of the Traveller, and we have to wonder if reviews complaining about usability relate to previous versions of the crib.

To be sure, it took a few times before we got the hang of set-up and take down. Also, it’s a bit more complicated than setting up a pack n’ play – it’s more like setting up a tent.

Nowadays, however, we can get the traveller set up in just a few minutes. The mattress requires about 4 minutes to inflate most of the way, but you need to give it 30 minutes or longer for it to fill completely. That’s fine most of the time, but not awesome on long travel days, when you just want to get your baby to sleep.

Using It With Your Baby

We use the Traveller for day and nighttime sleep instead of a crib when we travel, and as a play yard.

One of the most practical features of the Traveller is the zippered side panel. As a short mom (I’m 5’0″), the crib is too tall for me. When the side panel is zipped up, I can’t bend over the crib and reach all the way down to mattress-level. As such, the zip-down panel is a favorite feature.

Now that our baby is 10-months, it’s easier to set her down in the Traveller. We keep the panel unzipped when she’s sitting and playing during the day, which gives her the freedom to practice moving around, but also keeps her a bit protected when she tumbles over. It’s also great for lifting her out of the crib when she wakes-up: if you have back problems, especially, it makes a huge difference.

Comfort Review

One of the most surprising things about the Traveller is how darn comfortable it appears to be.

When you first inflate the Traveller’s crib mattress, it’s hard to imagine it could provide enough support for a baby. After 4 or 5 minutes of inflation, you can easily push from the top of the mattress through to the hard floor below. Yikes!

This is definitely a case of “patience is a virtue.”

If leave the mattress air valve open for the recommended 30 minutes (we always try to give it a bit longer), the mattress transforms into a pretty comfy little sleeping platform.

When it’s fully inflated, the mattress measures roughly 1.25″ from the floor to the top of the mattress. If you apply even force to the fully inflated mattress, it feels plush. It doesn’t sink down too much, and you can’t feel the floor below.  A baby’s crib mattress should be firm , and it’s kind of astonishing how well the Traveller’s mattress performs. Thin but mighty, and no need to improve the comfort of this pack and play !

We also love the slip on mattress sheet. It fits perfectly, with no loose fabric, and is very soft to the touch. The fabric is oeko-tex certified, too – good news for safety.

Packing & Portability

When we were shopping for a travel pack n’ play, packability (along with weight) was one of our main deciding factors.

We travel a lot on discount airlines in Europe. Often, the cost of our luggage is more than the price of our tickets. Because of this, it’s worth it to keep our luggage to a minimum, which is of course a challenge when you’re bringing a baby along.

The phil & teds travel crib is awesome for packing. It weighs only 6 pounds, and takes up roughly the same amount of space as a thick yoga mat. Pair it with a travel blackout blind , and our kiddo can sleep anywhere!

Basically, it’s made for people who travel like us: on a budget, with a fair number of flights. If you plan on doing a lot of car trips, where space isn’t at such a premium, this review might not be as helpful.

Safety & Green Score

The Traveller meets the government safety standards in the countries where it’s sold. What that means really depends on where you live, unfortunately.

Use of Fire Retardants

Whether phil & teds adds  flame retardants  to the Traveller depends on where you buy it.

As the company isn’t clear about its use of flame retardants online, we reached out to them to ask.

In Europe, “we can confirm that the fire retardant is only a requirement in UK and Ireland.” We interpreted this to mean if you buy a Traveller in continental EU, it won’t have fire retardant added. If you buy a Traveller in the UK/Ireland, it will have fire retardant added.

The company has yet to respond to my query about Traveller cribs sold in the USA and Canada.

Mattress & Bedding Safety

Here’s what the phil & teds website has to say about the mattress and sheet:

baby can rest easy too on the thermally insulated self-inflating mattress, which is covered with an oeko-tex approved fitted sheet & is free from health-hazardous substances for peace of mind.

The wording here is a bit confusing. Is it the sheet that’s “free from health-hazardous substances”? Or the mattress?

The phrase “oeko-tex approved” is equally problematic. The STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification is an awesome way to confirm textiles are free from harmful chemicals. The problem is, phil & teds hasn’t actually said the sheet has achieved the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification. The wording is vague, and could refer to one of OEKO-TEX® other certifications. Or it could mean they are using fabric that meets OEKO-TEX® standards, but they haven’t actually gotten the certification.

I looked in the OEKO-TEX® database for phil & teds, and couldn’t find anything listed. It’s possible I used the database incorrectly, and have reached out to both phil & teds and OEKO-TEX® for confirmation. Neither have responded to date.

Transparency

Overall, we really like our phil & teds traveller.

However, we’re also pretty disappointed with the information the company provides online. We still have a lot of question marks about the chemicals and materials used in the Traveller, and it seems like it should be easier to get answers.

Phil and Teds Travel Crib Summary

Based on our own testing, we give the Traveller travel crib 4.1 stars out of five

What’s to Love

  • Super lightweight, compact, and portable. Lighter than most (if not all) travel cribs on the market, it is ideal for airplane trips. We packed ours in checked luggage, but you could take it carry on as well.
  • The zip-down side panel is practical for all parents, but it’s especially great if you have a bad back or are short.
  • Easy to put together and take apart, making it a good choice for short stays or moving locations every few days. This would be a great travel cot for a multi-city vacation in Europe, for example, or a road trip!
  • OEKO-TEX® approved fitted sheet and a mattress that’s free from health-hazardous substances – despite the problems with transparency, it seems phil & teds is moving in the right direction when it comes to harmful chemicals.
  • Thermally insulated mattress means you can set it up on a cool floor, and your little one will still be a comfortable temperature.
  • Easier to clean than a traditional pack and play.
  • Packs up quite small, and the included bag comes with a shoulder strap for easy transport.
  • Mid-range pricing – this isn’t the cheapest travel crib out there, but it’s also not the most expensive. If you plan to use it a lot (as we have), it’s easy to see the value and justify the expense.

Product Cons and What We’d Change

  • The mattress seems too thin to provide adequate support for a baby, especially older and heavier babies and young kids.
  • Your Traveller crib may or may not have flame retardants added, depending on where you buy it.
  • The company really isn’t very forthcoming about the chemicals used in the crib’s manufacture. We’re still left with a lot of questions about whether this crib is non-toxic.

Traveling with a toddler is crazy enough without having to lug a heavy travel crib through the airport—my diaper bag alone is enough to handle while going through security. So when I saw that Phil&Teds Traveller Travel Crib weighs only seven pounds, I jumped at the chance to give it a try. The entire crib fits into a sleek, yoga-mat-size bag you can carry over your shoulder, like a cross-body bag, and easily put in an overhead bin on an airplane. But I actually like to pack it in my large suitcase, since it barely takes up any space (it could even fit into a standard backpack)— then I don’t have to count it as an extra carry-on.

Right away, the Traveller reminded me of pitching a tent; in fact, my husband jokingly calls it “Phil&Teds Excellent Adventure” crib (like the Keanu Reeves ’80s cult classic). Setting up the crib is a three-step process that takes about 5 to 10 minutes total. First, you snap the aluminum rods together and push them through a slightly padded sleeve to create the top rim. Then you connect the four legs to the rim and secure the base of the crib to each leg. Finally, you blow up the mattress—I promise that you won’t be out of breath—cover it with the soft fitted sheet that’s included and latch it onto small hooks so it doesn’t move around. It’s a little bit more work than other pop-up cribs, but still way easier than anything you’ve managed to piece together from IKEA. You probably won’t even need it but just in case, you can watch the crib being put together here .

phil & teds 2in1 traveller travel cot

My 20-month-old son was particularly excited by the zip-away opening on one of the long sides of the crib. He happily plays inside, making a house for his toys and even inviting “Mama in tent.” (I don’t fit completely, but I can comfortably rest my head and torso inside—and, of course, I approve of any game that involves lying down!) I also love that because it’s so light, I can easily move it out into the yard or take it to the beach, creating a little fort on top of a picnic blanket. If you plan to use it outdoors a lot though, you might want to buy the mesh sun cover ($20) that keeps out UV rays and protects baby from bugs.

Performance

At first I was worried the blow-up mattress might not be thick enough since there is only a thin, tarp-like bottom that separates it from the ground, but my son slept surprisingly well. I realized that unlike me, who’s used to a plush feather bed, his crib mattress is super firm and he must be used to it. The mattress is also thermally insulated, so it’s not like he is sleeping directly on the floor. Still, I personally feel better when we’re using it indoors, on a carpeted surface.

I also love that he can crawl into his “tent,” and then I zip him up into it—he thinks it’s a fun game we’re playing, and that helps him adjust better to going to sleep in a new setting.

phil & teds 2in1 traveller travel cot

While the mattress is a cinch to blow up, I do have to use my yoga-mat-rolling skills to transform it back into a compact cylinder that will fit inside the carry bag. After several attempts, I’ve figured out that the best way to do this is by using my knees to push out air as I roll. I also get my son to help by stomping on the unrolled part, which, of course, he loves. Otherwise, disassembly takes just a few minutes.

One thing to keep in mind: Since the Traveller doesn’t have a heavy base and the walls are beams and mesh, not wood bars like in a regular crib, it may not withstand tantrums or climbing escapades. Luckily I’ve never had the Traveller tip over. But since the crib is designed for newborn to age 3, it’s definitely something to be wary of if your child becomes an Energizer Bunny once he learns to stand up and walk.

phil & teds 2in1 traveller travel cot

I’m a fan of modern and minimalist design, so the Traveller is right up my alley. It comes in two colors—black and silver—and both blend seamlessly into their surroundings, without blatantly announcing, “Hello, playpen in the room!” And, since the rectangular mattress is narrower (22 inches) than a typical portable crib, the Traveller fits pretty well in all kinds of tight spaces (like hotel rooms).

The trapezoidal shape (it’s 45 inches long, so it’s good for older toddlers too) also makes the assembly process pretty self-explanatory, especially after you’ve done it once.

As someone who dreads lugging around dead weight, the Traveller is a no-brainer, especially for a family on the go. You can store it out of the way in your coat closet when you’re not using it and then when it’s time to drive to the in-laws or fly off to a vacation in the Caribbean, just toss it in the trunk and head out knowing you’re covered for both sleep and play. It’s lighter than baby and it’s easy to put together—two key elements you want as a savvy traveler.

Yelena Moroz is a freelance writer and stay-at-home mom based in Richmond, Virginia. She loves spending time outdoors with her son Bradley. When they’re not exploring local parks and playgrounds, you can find them trying out new foods—although, pretty much anything in noodle form is a hit with Bradley.
