The oasis city of Al Ain has a dramatic setting, overlooked by the craggy mountain of Jebel Hafeet . The drive up to Jebel Hafeet's summit to take in the panoramic views is the number one thing to do while staying in town.

It's a pretty and ordered town that is easy to get around and is a popular weekend break destination thanks to its family-friendly tourist attractions, such as the shady palm-tree-filled oasis, its water park, and acclaimed zoo.

Historically, Al Ain has been settled since at least 3000 BCE. It's one of the best places to visit in the UAE for travelers interested in local history and culture and is the only site in the country to be inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list .

The rugged contours of Jebel Hafeet (Hafeet Mountain) rise up from the edge of Al Ain. If you're looking for panoramic photos over the city and surrounding desert then a trip to the summit should be at the top of your sightseeing list.

It's approximately 56 kilometers from central Al Ain to the summit. At 1,240 meters, this is the second highest peak in the United Arab Emirates (the highest is Jebel Jais in Ras Al-Khaimah ) and the highest in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The drive up here, following a winding mountain road, has plenty of scenic viewpoints, and from the summit, the entire region is spread out beneath you.

If you're interested in ancient history, make sure to stop off at the Jebel Hafeet tombs at the foot of Jebel Hafeet. Along with the Hili Archaeological Site , the tombs here were a fundamental factor in Al Ain being proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Jebel Hafeet tombs are all beehive shaped and single-chambered and date back to the early Bronze Age.

Opened in 1969, Al Ain Zoo is the United Arab Emirates' largest zoo.

Endemic mammals such as the Arabian antelope and Arabian oryx can be seen, as well as African gazelles, giraffes, and eland.

The big cat enclosures feature lions, tigers, pumas, black and spotted leopards, and jaguars. There is also a monkey compound, aviary section, and reptile house.

The zoo is famous for its research facilities, particularly the breeding program for endangered native animals, with more than 30 percent of the species that can be seen here currently on the endangered list.

The zoo's latest venture is the Al Ain Safari, a 217-hectare extension, where African and Arabian Gulf animals (including some critically endangered species) live in a more natural environment. Visiting this section of the zoo is by jeep or truck tour only.

There are plenty of family-friendly things to do, including a petting zoo; giraffe feeding activities; camel rides; and a children's garden, which encourages biodiversity learning.

Inside the zoo, you'll also find the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Center with exhibits focused on the Arabian Gulf's desert environment and ecology.

This much restored fortress, surrounded by some tranquil, shaded gardens in the central city , dates back to 1891 and was once an important defensive feature protecting the town from attack.

Today, it's one of Al Ain's major points of interest, and inside its stocky golden-bricked bulk, you'll find an exhibit devoted to photographs depicting the life and work of British adventurer, desert explorer, and writer Wilfred Thesiger, with a particular focus on his journeys into the Empty Quarter during the 1940s.

The fort's ramparts and towers can be climbed for views, and a video explains all about the fort's restoration in the information center.

A tranquil respite from the hot sun, and a refreshingly natural diversion from the city streets, Al Ain Oasis is a vast series of date palm plantations linked by footpaths right in the heart of the city.

A small museum near the main entrance does a good job of explaining the importance of date palms to traditional life, while the oasis itself contains nearly 150,000 date palm trees.

The palm groves are still fed by water channels using the traditional falaj irrigation system, which has been in use in the United Arab Emirates for 3,000 years.

This is a great option for anyone seeking some downtime and a relaxing stroll or bike ride amid the shady palms.

Cycles can be rented at the main entrance to explore the oasis at your own pace. There are also tours by buggy or horse available at the entrance.

The oasis is slap in the center of town, only a hop from Al-Jahili Fort and Al Ain Palace Museum, so it can be easily visited before or after exploring the city's main cultural monuments.

This surfing, kayaking, and white water rafting water park contains the world's largest artificial surfing wave (measuring 3.3 meters); three levels of white water rafting rapids catering to absolute beginners, as well as experienced rafters; and a long kayaking channel.

As well as a fun day out for adventure seekers, this is one of the top spots in the UAE to learn how to surf, kayak, or white water raft.

As well as the three main activities, there's an Air Park with ziplines, balance beams, and a giant swing; a climbing wall; wakeboarding facilities; and a family pool area for when you just want to relax.

The Al Ain National Museum, housed in the Sultan Bin Zayed Fort, does a good job of bringing the heritage, culture, and history of the United Arab Emirates alive.

There is a particularly interesting ethnographic section reflecting the daily life of the region's people, with a reconstructed traditional majlis and exhibits of traditional garments and Bedouin jewelry.

In the archaeological section are displays of local artifact discoveries that date back to the Bronze and Iron Ages, including pendants and an important coin collection.

The main attraction of this section, though, are the exhibits from the nearby Hili Archaeological Park, including the restored Grand Hili tomb unearthed at the site.

Before heading here, check on the official website if the museum is open, as closures due to restoration of the museum are ongoing.

The Al Ain Palace Museum is the former residence of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan and his family, who went on to become the first ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The interior of some of the palace compound has been finely restored to reflect what the palace would have looked like when the Sheikh called it home.

Unfortunately, information throughout the rooms is sparse for those who don't speak Arabic. Nevertheless, the interior decoration really does give you a good idea of the style of life that was led here, and it provides an opportunity to view Emirati traditional architecture.

This traditional mud-brick fort has been restored to its former glory and offers a good chance to appreciate Emirati fortification architecture.

It was built during the early years of the 20th century and was home to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan and his family between the years of 1946 and 1966, before he became ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Inside, as well as admiring the building itself, you can visit a small museum dedicated to the history of the fort and the lives of the ruling Al Nahyan family.

Just outside the fort is a courtyard with a modern recreation of the Emirati falaj (irrigation canal) system.

At Hili Archaeological Park, archaeologists have excavated finds dating back to the Bronze and Iron ages.

Although many casual visitors will struggle to comprehend the site, which consists of Umm Al Nar period tombs, archaeology fiends will enjoy the vast sense of history here.

It is mostly because of the important discoveries found here that Al Ain has been inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The park lies amid a protected area. Most of the finds from the site are on display at Al Ain National Museum which does a great job of putting the site into context.

Al Ain's camel market is an excellent chance for travelers to experience a taste of traditional local culture. The market is on the outskirts of town, about nine kilometers from the city center.

The market is a little stinky (unsurprisingly), but if you can handle the smell, a visit here is a truly fascinating experience that has yet to be trussed up for the tourists.

This is the last remaining camel market in the United Arab Emirates, and people from across the region head here to buy and sell. Nearly all the camel buying business happens in the morning, so it's best to head here early. The market opens at about 7am.

You are free to wander around at will and watch people bartering over the camels; don't take any notice of men who may approach you on entering and insist that you need a guide.

Camel racing has taken place in the United Arab Emirates for centuries, and the large 10-kilometer track at Al Ain hosts regular races. Al Ain's camel racing track is 16 kilometers southwest of the town center in the suburb of Al Dahir.

Watching the racing is a rare opportunity to see a slice of traditional Emirati culture, which has not faded away as the high-rises rose.

If you happen to be in town when the racing is on, it shouldn't be missed. Certain breeds of camel are used for racing due to their slender size, including the white or golden "Anafi" breed and the brown or black "Boushahri" breed.

Racing generally takes place on Friday mornings (usually from around 7am) during the cooler months from approximately October to April.

At the foot of Jebel Hafeet you'll find Mubazzarah Park (also called Jebel Hafeet Park), an isolated spot of green amid the rocky and dry landscape.

This natural oasis is a great place to relax and is especially popular with Al Ain locals during sunset when families head here for picnics, walks, games, and barbecues.

There's a small lake and plenty of space in the park for the kids to let loose and run about. The highlight, though, for travelers who want to soak away any travel aches or pains is the natural mineral hot springs here.

The hot water is pumped up into the park to run through narrow manmade streams where you can soak your feet. It's also pumped up into two swimming pools (separated by gender) if you want a fuller soak.

On the weekends, the park can get extremely busy, so if you want a quieter experience try to time your visit for a weekday.

Although now showing its age - particularly in comparison to the flashy theme parks of Dubai and Abu Dhabi city - Hili Fun City is a great place for families with smaller children.

The park features more than 40 rides, including a roller coaster and an elevated sky-flyer but is most well known for its slower, more old-fashioned rides, such as dodgem cars and carousels, which have a more retro vibe.

It's extremely popular on the weekends with local families due to the good-value admission fee. As it's outside, it's best to plan your visit for the early evening so that you miss the heat of the day.

Just adjacent to the theme park is the Al Ain Ice Rink, an Olympic-sized facility offering skating and numerous children's games.

Nicknamed the "garden city," Al Ain lives up to its reputation. Throughout the city area, you'll find parks of manicured gardens and lush green lawns, which contrast vibrantly with the dry and parched desert surroundings.

Many public gardens and parks offer welcome shade on long, hot summer days. Several are endowed with weird (and slightly over-the-top) landscaping elements, impressive fountains with lighting displays at night, and playground facilities for children.

The Central Public Garden in the center of town is one of the best for a stroll.

The parks come alive with people strolling, families picnicking, joggers and runners, and children playing in the early evening hours after the worst of the day's heat has finished.

For first-time visitors to Al Ain, the best place to stay is in the city center, close to top attractions such as the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum, the Al Jahili Fort, and the Al Ain Zoo. The main sights are spread out over a large area, so it's best to explore the city by car. Note that Al Ain has very little budget accommodation, so it's best to upgrade to mid-range here.

• Close to the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum and the Al Jahili Fort, the family-friendly Al Ain Rotana Hotel is one of the city's top hotels, with a spa, swimming pool, fitness club, and on-site restaurants.
• Other popular upscale options are the Radisson Blu Hotel & Resort , with a massive amount of facilities, including huge grounds with separate adult and children pool areas and a bundle of restaurants, and Danat Al Ain Resort, with its spa, multiple pools, tennis courts, and bags of children's activities.

Mid-Range Hotels:

• The Ayla Hotel , in the center of Al Ain, four minutes by car to Al Jahili Fort, offers a pool; a good restaurant; a gym; and friendly, helpful staff.

Just one hour from Dubai and 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi, Al Ain is the birthplace of Sheikh Zayed, the Founding Father, so it has a special place in the country’s story. 1. Drive on one of the world’s best roads at Jebel Hafeet

The Jebel Hafeet Mountain Road has been ranked as one of the greatest driving roads in the world, and it’s not hard to see why.

With about 12 kilometres of perfect, winding tarmac and an almost lunar landscape, the smooth surface winds up the 1,249-metre-tall mountain on Al Ain’s border with Oman. The drive guarantees amazing views of the city and epic sunrise vista points. Pop into the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet hotel located near the mountain peak, where you can enjoy a sundowner with the view, or even a game of mountaintop mini-golf.

2. Go on a safari at Al Ain Zoo

One of the Garden City’s biggest tourist attractions has to be Al Ain Zoo . Founded in 1968 by Sheikh Zayed, the 400-hectare zoo at the foothills of Jebel Hafeet is home to oryx, giraffe, Barbary sheep, rhinos, hippos, tigers, lions and more. Kids will enjoy the petting zoo, and there’s also a well-respected conservation and breeding programme.

The new Al Ain Safari will cover more than 217 hectares when it's complete, but for now, the 54-hectare section that is open to the public offers one of the world’s largest man-made safaris where you can encounter the Big 5 from the safety of an SUV or safari truck. Emirati safari guides will take the lead, giving you more information about the animals and the surrounding landscape as you drive.

3. Step back in history at Qasr Al Muwaiji

For an in-depth exploration of the history of the UAE, head to Qasr Al Muwaiji, a Unesco-listed world heritage sites. Inside is a permanent exhibition filled with rare photographs and artefacts that celebrates the life of the President, Sheikh Khalifa, who was born here. Peek inside the north-west tower, which was previously used as a residential area for Sheikh Zayed and his family. Visitors to the palace can also take part in events such as poetry evenings, excavation and restoration sessions and a falconers' camp that regularly take place on-site.

4. Unwind at Al Batha Nature Reserve

Escape into nature at Al Batha Nature Reserve , located near Hili Archaeological Park. For something a little bit different, book a night at Jebel Hafit Desert Park where you can camp in a dome under the shadow of the towering mountain. This desert park is great for those looking to go biking, hiking or trekking, and there are three types of camping experiences on offer if you want to make it an overnight stay.

Take your pick from basic camping, where you bring all your own gear, serviced camping in a Bedouin tent with breakfast provided, or sleep in a five-star air-conditioned bubble tent for the full glamping experience.

6. Take a dip at Green Mubazzarah

Also in the shadow of Jebel Hafeet is Green Mubazzarah Park, a natural oasis in the city. Filled with rolling grassy hillsides, it's a great place to go with children, with plenty of outdoor space for running around or enjoying a picnic. There’s also a small lake and a mini-train for rides around the outskirts.

The big draw here is the natural mineral hot springs that run through man-made channels in the park. They also flow into bigger pools (one for men and one for women) if you want to take a swim in the steaming water. 7. Visit Zaman Lawal Heritage Village

Part of the Telal Resort in Al Ain’s Remah desert, the Zaman Lawal Heritage Village is worth a visit even if you’re not staying at the luxury boutique resort.

Guests can tuck into Emirati food at Khatta restaurant or visit The Local Souk, a traditional-looking market selling handicrafts, spices and more. Inside the House of Good Fortune, there’s an exhibit detailing the importance of date palms , while the House of Pearls sheds light on the Garden City’s pearl-diving past, when men would travel to the coasts for months on end to harvest these gems from the depths of the ocean. There’s even an old pearl diving boat called The Jalibut on display.

8. Wander through Al Ain Oasis

Al Ain Oasis was the first curated Unesco World Heritage Site in the UAE, and is a beautiful spot to while away a few hours under the shade of thousands of date palms.

This 1,200-hectare estate is home to more than 147,000 palm trees of about 100 different varieties. Take a stroll or hop on a bicycle and two-wheel around the oasis, passing the hundreds of small farms within. Be sure to visit the welcome centre on arrival; here, you can see interactive exhibits on how the oasis works and what’s being done to ensure traditional farming methods can continue in the future. You can also see the traditional irrigation system in use throughout the oasis, a technique that dates back more than 3,000 years.

9. Delve into history at Hili Archaeological Park

A little bit of a drive from the city is Hili Archaeological Park , which is a must-visit for history buffs. This place is the earliest-known evidence of an agricultural village in the UAE, and dates back to 3000 BCE.

One of the most dramatic buildings is the unroofed Grand Tomb, which is more than 4,000 years old and about 12 metres in diameter. Beside this is Hili Site 1, where guests can see the remains of what was once a tower built from mud bricks. There’s also a large round building surrounded by a moat and the remains of several villages from the Iron Age, where you can see houses with well-preserved walls and one of the earliest examples of the falaj irrigation system.

10. Enjoy the exhibits at Al Jahili Fort

One of the largest and oldest forts in the UAE, this is in the heart of the Garden City. Constructed out of mud-brick, straw and palm tree fibres, it dates back to the early 19th century when it was believed to have been built to protect the adjacent oasis and its date palms.

Today, the building has been carefully restored and is a museum with various exhibits, including a black and white photography series from British adventurer Sir Wilfred Thesiger with images taken during his crossing of the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) desert in the 1940s.

Al Ain is one of the most authentic and interesting cities in the UAE. Also known as Garden City or Oasis City , it arose around a lush green oasis in the middle of the desert, surrounded by the Jebel Hafeet mountains, right along the border with Oman.

Today Al Ain is one of the must-see destinations for a trip to the UAE, easily accessible from Dubai and Abu Dhabi and full of history, ancient fortresses, gardens, palm tree-covered oases and breathtaking views.

Al Ain is a quiet city, surrounded by rough and dusty mountains , and located in the middle of the desert . The border with Oman passes right in the center of Al Ain, and from here you can go to the nearby city of Al Buraimi and perhaps continue towards Muscat, driving through one of the most authentic and wild sceneries of this corner of Arabia.

Al Ain, whose roots go back to the Neolithic era, about 8000 years ago, is the only site in the United Arab Emirates to be present in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List .

Al Ain was once an important oasis along the route of caravans traveling through the harsh Rub ‘al-Khali desert, the so-called Empty Quarter, the largest sandy desert in the world.

The merchants stopped in this cool and shady oasis to rest the camels, stock up on water that gushed from the springs that can still be visited today, and stock up on abundant and delicious local products.

In recent history, the founding father of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, grew up in Al Ain. His son, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, current president of the UAE and ruler of Abu Dhabi, was also born in Al Ain.

Al Ain today is part of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, from which it is approximately 130 km (81 mi). Dubai is roughly a similar distance away.

Al Ain today has over 600,000 inhabitants, but has kept its authentic charm and peaceful atmosphere quite intact. Many people choose to visit it on a day trip from Dubai or from Abu Dhabi , while others choose to enjoy this wonderful area more calmly by staying in one of its fabulous resorts. So… let’s find out which are the places to visit that you just can’t miss!

Jebel Hafeet

The Jebel Hafeet is a 1.240-meter-high mountain , overlooking the city of Al Ain. It is considered the second highest peak in the UAE (after Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah ) and from here you can admire a breathtaking view of the city of Al Ain and the immense desert that surrounds it.

At the foot of Jebel Hafeet it is possible to explore the remains of ancient prehistoric tombs (to reach them, however, you need a good off-road vehicle), while if you want to take some amazing photos, go up to the top of the mountain.

To reach the top of Jebel Hafeet there is a comfortable and wide panoramic road , which is undoubtedly one of the most scenic in the UAE. From the center of Al Ain to the summit it is about 55 km, the road is a bit steep and winding, and offers many vantage points from which you can enjoy incredible views over the entire region .

On the top of Jebel Hafeet there is a palace belonging to the ruling family, and nearby is the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet , one of the best and most scenic hotels in Al Ain.

Al Ain Oasis

The Al Ain Oasis is one of the most amazing and authentic places you can visit in the UAE. There are 7 different oases in Al Ain , totaling around 150,000 palm trees that produce the best dates in the entire region.

Palm trees grow in a series of plantations irrigated by water canals, using the famous Falaj irrigation system , which has been in use for over 3,000 years.

The Al Ain Oasis is located in the heart of the city, and can be visited for free . You can enjoy a peaceful and relaxing stroll along the myriad of footpaths that wind their way through the plantations.

The most interesting oases to visit are the one located between the Al Ain Palace Museum and the Al Ain National Museum , and that of Al Qattara , near the old souk. The latter also preserves several ancient fortresses.

Green Mubazzarah Park

Green Mubazzarah Park is undoubtedly a favorite spot for locals, who come here to relax and enjoy a picnic with the family.

This oasis is located in the middle of a rocky and arid area, which makes it particularly scenic. People come from all over the region, including neighboring Oman, to soak in the hot springs that flow into Green Mubazzarah Park.

From ancient springs gushes a natural mineral water , which is quite hot, which the locals believe has particular healing properties, especially for the bones, muscles and nervous system. Hot water flows through the park and then forms a series of pools, where you can soak if you want.

Al-Jahili Fort

Al-Jahili Fort is arguably the most iconic building in Al Ain, and is one of the most interesting places to understand its fascinating history.

Nestled in a lush green garden, this wonderful fortress dating back to 1891 looks like a picturesque sandcastle. Well, it’s actually a sandcastle.

It played an important defensive role for the city and was the headquarters of the forces of the Oman Trucial Scouts , who for decades maintained the peace between the different local tribes who ruled the area.

Inside you can also visit an interesting exhibition dedicated to Sir Wilfred Thesiger , a British military officer, explorer and travel writer, who in the 1940s crossed the Rub ‘al Khali desert with a group of Bedouins, from the south coast of Oman to Abu Dhabi.

One of the most interesting things to do in Al Ain is a visit to the Al Ain Zoo , the largest and most important in the UAE, famous for its commitment to research and protection of endangered species.

Opened in 1969, the Al Ain Zoo is home to local mammals, such as the Arabian antelope and Arabian oryx, as well as wonderful African mammal specimens, such as giraffes, zebras, gazelles, lions, tigers, jaguars and monkeys.

The Al Ain Zoo has a major research facility, specializing in breeding and conservation programs for local endangered species, which account for over 30% of the animals housed in the zoo.

A visit to the Al Ain Zoo is definitely a must for families , who can admire these wonderful animals grazing freely in an area of ​​over 200 hectares, participating in a guided tour aboard special vehicles.

Qasr al Muwaiji

Among the fortresses that can be seen in Al Ain, the recently restored Qasr al Muwaiji is one of the most beautiful.

Built in the early 1900s, it was the home of the UAE’s founding father , Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Here the sheikh lived with his family, and is the place where his son, Sheikh Khalifa, current president of the UAE and ruler of Abu Dhabi, was born.

Inside there is a small museum on the history of the fort and on the life of the ruling family.

Camel Market

This is certainly one of the most authentic and fun places to get in touch with the local culture. The Al Ain Camel Market is a dirty, smelly, and chaotic place that you definitely can’t miss: camel sellers from all over the Middle East come here to sell their camels.

The market is always quite crowded with local buyers, who come here to see the animals and haggle to buy some.

Most camels, especially the younger ones, are bought for their meat. Locals love camel meat. When a local family is planning a wedding celebration, it is customary to come here and buy a camel, which will surely end up on the grill.

This is the last remaining camel market in the UAE , making it a must experience for travelers.

You can visit it for free: ignore the people who approach you insisting that you need a guide, they just want to get some money. When you visit Camel Market you can safely watch people bargain, but don’t interfere and respectfully keep your distance. It is important to ask people for permission before taking a picture (this is also true if you just want to photograph someone’s camels).

Al Ain Palace Museum

The fort that now houses the Al Ain Palace Museum was once the ancient royal palace, where Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan and his family lived until 1966, before moving to Abu Dhabi.

The palace has been restored and restored to its former glory, so that today it is possible to realize exactly how it was when the Sheikh lived there. Its gardens and decorations are a prime example of classic Emirati architecture.

Al Ain National Museum

Right on the edge of the Al Ain Oasis, is the Sultan Bin Zayed Fort , an ancient fortress that now houses the Al Ain National Museum .

This museum is dedicated to the cultural and historical heritage of the region, with several exhibits dedicated to local life and traditions.

The museum also houses an interesting archaeological section that collects artifacts dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages from the nearby Hili Archaeological Park .

Camel Racing

Did you know that camel racing is the national sport of the UAE? This is an ancient tradition, which is carried on by many local men, including sheikhs and important people.

For a traveler, seeing a camel ride is a rare opportunity to discover the local culture. To find out if there is a ride on the day of your visit, ask your guide or the locals.

In Al Ain there is a 10-kilometer track dedicated to camel racing and hundreds of enthusiasts come here from all over the region for the races.

Green Gardens and Old Souks

Al Ain is also known as Garden City, and this is due to its green gardens, parks and oases. One of the most beautiful gardens to visit is the Hili Archaeological Park , which is especially popular with local families who go there for picnics or to relax.

In this garden you can admire fountains and incredible and colorful floral compositions.

Another place worth seeing is the Al Qattara Old Souk , located on the edge of the Al Qattara Oasis . This traditional souk dates back to the mid-1900s, and especially on weekends it is a great place to meet local artisans and buy handicrafts, spices, dates, coffee or some local specialties.

Al Ain is an excellent destination for those who want to enjoy a few days in total relaxation, in one of the calmest and most pleasant cities in the United Arab Emirates.

Most travelers arrive in Al Ain on a day tour from Dubai or from Abu Dhabi , which usually also includes a great and hearty lunch included .

Those traveling on their own , however, have a good variety of choice of places to eat in Al Ain .

One of the most popular choices is the Ayla Restaurant , located in the Ayla Hotel , which offers an excellent buffet of local and international specialties , seafood, meat and good vegetarian options.

While at the Ayla Grand Hotel (don’t confuse them, they are two different hotels) you can try the Nara Restaurant with its buffet of excellent international cuisine, especially Indian and Oriental.

To taste some typical local specialties , there is no doubt: go to Al-Fanar Restaurant & Cafe . Al Ain is approximately 130-160 km (depending on the area) from Abu Dhabi and Dubai and is well connected by roads that cross the desert, but which are paved and in very good condition.

The easiest and cheapest way to get there is to rent a car in Dubai or Abu Dhabi ( here you will find some useful info on the most reliable and affordable car rentals ), and enjoy the extraordinary road trip in complete freedom.

Most travelers choose to visit Al Ain on a guided day tour from Dubai or Abu Dhabi . This can be a great choice, because it allows you to enjoy the city to the fullest and without worries .

There is also the E201 bus which connects Dubai to Al Ain , departing from the Al Ghubaiba bus station. Departures are every 30 minutes and the journey lasts 2 to 2.5 hours , priced at AED 25 one way.

Those traveling from Abu Dhabi can take the X90 bus , which goes from Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station directly to Al Ain Central Bus Station. The journey takes about 2 hours, the one way ticket costs 25 AED.

However, consider that the city of Al Ain is quite large , and to visit it you will need to go around by taxi .

8 Things To Do In Al Ain | Day Trip From Abu Dhabi or Dubai!

Going on a day trip to Al Ain and finding all of the things to do in Al Ain was a highlight of my recent trip to Abu Dhabi!

Al Ain is a city within the Abu Dhabi Emirate and although it is 2 hours away from Abu Dhabi city and 1.5 hours from Dubai, and much closer to Oman (literally right by the border if Oman and the UAE) it is well worth the day trip from Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Al Ain is where you get to feel what Abu Dhabi, and the whole of the UAE actually, was like before its growth boom. I found it very interesting to see where the Founding Father of the UAE lived with his family only in the 60’s and how different it is to the city and country we see today.

Not only that but you can explore palm grove Oasis’ where dates upon dates grow and you can really feel rural Middle Eastern life, this city isn’t called the Garden City for nothing!

Getting to al ain from abu dhabi.

First up, let’s cover how to get to Al Ain from Abu Dhab i because with a 2 hour journey, Al Ain from Abu Dhabi does need some advance planning.

I got a private driver who picked me up at my hotel in the morning, stayed in Al Ain with me and took me to each of the Al Ain attractions, and then dropped me back at my hotel in the evening.

You can do this too with the help of your hotel in Abu Dhabi, reception should be able to book you a private driver to take you there, wait for the day with you and then bring your back.

However, although my day trip from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain was great, my driver was very much just a driver so he couldn’t and didn’t tell me anything about the city and the attractions and we did miss some of the things to do in Al Ain that I’ve added onto this list and found out about later.

Therefore for the best experience, I recommend you book a full day trip where everything is included and you have more of a guide than a driver.

There are limited day tours online to Al Ain from Abu Dhabi but Viator sell this 10 hour Al Ain Day Trip from Abu Dhabi with Lunch which visits all of the best places to visit in Al Ain.

Al Ain Day Trip from Dubai

Getting to al ain from dubai.

Al Ain is in the Abu Dhabi Emirate but it’s actually quicker to get to Al Ain from Dubai city than Abu Dhabi city which is why it makes one of the great Dubai day trips !

Like from Abu Dhabi you could get a private driver to take you there and take you from attraction to attraction but if you want to learn more and not have to guide a driver around. I do recommend a day tour and actually, there are far more day tours to Al Ain from Dubai available to book online than Abu Dhabi so it’s worth taking advantage of this!

Al Ain Day Trip Costs

Most of the things to do in Al Ain in this post are free so although you are spending money on a driver or tour to get here from Abu Dhabi city, once here, there are not many extra costs so that’s something to keep in mind when deciding and planning your trip!

Best time to visit Al Ain

Please do check the opening times for Al Ain attractions before you plan your visit.

For example, many of the attractions below are open on Fridays from 3pm -7pm only and not during the day since Friday is the first day of the weekend in the UAE and Muslims go to Friday prayer midday.

Some of the attractions are also closed on Monday .

Therefore, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday are the best times to visit.

Because Al Ain is in the desert and there is no sea breeze, it is much hotter than Abu Dhabi city and Dubai so it’s best to visit in the winter months if possible, I visited in February which was hot during the middle of the day but manageable, however in the summer months I can imagine visiting these Al Ain attractions in the middle of the day is far too hot so doing the day trip later in the day is better since most attractions are open until 7:00pm.

Things to do in Al Ain on a day trip

1. telal resort heritage and culture day tour.

An alternative day trip to Al Ain where you won’t see all of the Al Ain tourist spots below but will get a unique opportunity to experience the desert oasis of Al Ain is to book a Heritage and Cultural Package with Telal Resort .

Telal Resort is a luxury boutique desert resort outside the city of Al Ain. Their packages include meeting them at their own Heritage Village in the morning where you’ll be served Arabic Coffee, Dates and local Sweets followed by a tour of the Heritage Village and Traditional Souk with your guide. Then, you can choose from activities such as a camel ride or horse ride , the chance to try local clothing followed by an Arabic 3 course dinner and the chance to do an evening wildlife Safari .

This is a high quality luxury experience and definitely a unique experience too so if you want some time in the desert and a day trip that is full of ease and well organised, take a look into this.

2. Al Ain Oasis

Now onto the attractions in Al Ain city you can visit on a day trip.

I started my Al Ain day trip at Al Ain Oasis and I really recommend you doing this because walking around the Oasis as it opened when it was still quiet and the sun was only just starting to get hot but the Palm Groves were keeping the paths cool (I visited in February so it wasn’t crazy hot in Abu Dhabi then) was such a beautiful experience.

The Oasis really helps understand what the landscape was like here thousands of years ago and is a good chance to learn about how the ground was farmed using traditional irrigation systems to grow thousands of date palms and other fruit trees.

Entry into Al Ain Oasis to free . There is a visitor centre as you approach and here you can see the a miniature version of the oasis. After entering you can explore the Oasis as much as you want on foot or on bike.

I did find it a bit hard to follow the signs along the paths and kept circling back on my self. I did see a few groups with guides but I was fine wandering, reading the information signs and breathing in the fresh morning air.

3. Al Ain Palace Museum

Al Ain Palace Museum (which is also named Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum so don’t go thinking they are different places to visit in Al Ain), was my favourite place in Al Ain , where I visited second and where I spent the most time.

This is the palace where the the Founding Father of the UAE , the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan lived with his family. The Palace was built in 1937 and he lived there with his family until the late 1960’s before moving to Abu Dhabi city.

Al Ain Palace Museum is also free to enter and once inside you can walk around the palace at your own pace visiting almost every room in the palace.

It’s fascinating to see Sheikh Zayed’s bedroom, the different meeting rooms he had and how traditional the whole palace is.

4. Al Jahili Fort

Another one of the top places to visit in Al Ain is Al Jahili Fort because walking into here with the blazing sun above you and the bright brick walls of the fort in front of you will give you a real sense of what Arabia was like in the past !

Al Jahili Fort is the largest fort in the UAE and a hugely important fort in battles that occurred here in the past.

Another free attraction in Al Ain, I loved this fort for its architecture, below is a great Instagram photo opportunity , and because of it’s air con museum inside!

I visited Al Ain in February and although February is still winter in the UAE, as I reached Al Jahili Fort third on my Al Ain itinerary and at around 12:00 noon, it was very very hot and I was thankful for the inside air conditioned museum and exhibition space.

I believe the exhibition changes, I’m not sure how regularly, but when I visited I saw the exhibition about British explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger , his story exploring the vast empty desert of Arabia before any other traveller and his fascinating photos.

When I got home I actually purchased his book Arabian Sands which is the perfect read when in Abu Dhabi if you need a new book!

5. Qasr AlMuwaiji

Next on our list of things to do in Al Ain and the last historical attraction is Qasr AlMuwaiji.

You may have seen the word ‘Qasr’ a few times if you are researching things to do in Abu Dhabi or you are there already because 2 of the Abu Dhabi attractions you have to visit are Qasr AlWatan and Qasr AlHosn.

This is a fort that is about 100 years old and has played an important role in watching over the Oasis since then.

I spent the least time at this attraction in Al Ain , I think because it is smaller than the Palace and also inside you get to see inside some of the old furnished rooms but I had seen many of these already in Al Ain Palace so didn’t feel the need to spend long seeing them all again.

I do really love how the museum within the fort has been laid out though. The inside museum follows the sides of the rectangular fort so you feel like you’re outside and can see the walls of the fort but you’re inside in air conditioning, perfect!

The exhibition as you enter the visitor centre of the fort details the life of the fort and the life of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan who was born here and started his life here.

At the end of the exhibition you walk through the residential part of the fort which like the palace gives an extraordinary look at traditional life in the UAE and the basic homes people lived in before the growth boom of the country.

6. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Grand Mosque

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the biggest and main mosque in Abu Dhabi that everyone visits on their Abu Dhabi itinerary and Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed is Al Ain’s Grand Mosque.

It is the largest and most impressive looking mosque in Al Ain and one of the largest in the UAE.

I tried to enter as I actually wanted to pray in here on my Al Ain day trip but security said because prayer time had finished it had closed for visiting and praying.

I believe the pandemic has reduced the mosques opening tours to tourists and my driver didn’t have any other information either so I had to leave this off of my Al Ain itinerary.

7. Al Ain Camel Trading Market 

For a true unique experience in the UAE you should try to visit the Camel trading market in Al Ain. This is the only remaining traditional Camel Souk in the UAE !

It’s out of the city of Al Ain but only by 15 minutes and you can find it by searching Al Ain Camel Market on google maps.

Open every day of the week this is one of the brilliant places to visit in Al Ain to understand traditional life.

Camel racing is a big thing in the UAE as well as many other countries in the Middle East and this is where people will buy and sell camels for racing as well as riding and for meat. Sheep and goats are on sale here too.

Although traditional, posts I’ve read like this show that this market is used to tourists visiting which means it is approachable and the people working there will not be looking at you strangely. You can take photos with the camels and ask lots of questions although you will probably get charged for taking photos so be cautious if this isn’t something you want to get involved in.

8. Jebel Hafeet Hot Springs

This is something I missed out on on my day trip to Al Ain with a driver however, many of the day tours to Al Ain I have seen included this which is the plus to going on a guided tour with a guide rather than just a taxi driver or private driver who doesn’t know the area well.

Just 20 minutes from the centre of Al Ain city at the foot of Jebel Hafeet which is a small mountain is   Green Mubazzarah park , also detailed on Google maps as just Jebel Hafeet Hot Springs Garden and here you can enjoy the park as well as the smoothing and therapeutic effects of the hot spring water.

This is a pretty unique activity, who knew the UAE had hot springs hey!? But one of the good things to do in Al Ain, especially at the end of your Al Ain day trip to dip your feet in the water after all the walking you’ve done.

As this is a park, the hot springs are free to enter and therefore another one of the free things to do in Al Ain!

Al Ain, an oasis in the middle of the desert, is the largest in-land city in UAE. Though smaller than Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Al Ain still has so much to offer that you can't not visit this place. Located only two hours east of Dubai, this destination makes for a great weekend getaway!

Al Ain is full of parks, tree-lined avenues, green roundabouts and mini oasis, giving it the nickname 'Garden City'. It is the birthplace of Sheikh Zayed, the founder of UAE, and an ancient settlement that was one of the pitstops between Oman and other Gulf countries. It is one of world's oldest permanent settlements and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The city has picturesque forts, beautiful gardens, traditional souks and adventure hotspots. It truly is a coming together of the ancient and modern worlds and shows how a city can retain its cultural roots while still evolving into a modern and developed entity.

Jebel hafeet - al ain - united arab emirates.

Jebel Hafeet, the highest peak in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and the second highest in UAE, is a 1,249-metres high mountain looking over the city of Al Ain. The mountain provides stunning views of the city from the top. You can either drive, take a cab, or if you have the stamina, cycle all the way up to the peak of the mountain for stunning views of the sprawling city. Over 500 ancient burial tombs have been found in the foothills of Jebel Hafeet. Also, the 12km long road, leading to the top of the mountain, is easily termed as the greatest driving road on the planet. There are 21 turns on the road and it's the road to drive on if you own a supercar or have rented one for a day!

Al Ain Zoo - Zoo District - Al Ain - United Arab Emirates

Al Ain Zoo is the largest in UAE and a very popular destination amongst families. Home to over 4,000 animals, it has a giraffe feeding centre, a petting zoo and camel riding facilities. The zoo can be visited on foot and it takes around 2 hours for the full tour. There are also other options to tour the facility – trucks and SUVs. Besides the animals, the zoo also offers a night safari and a learning centre called Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre. It's an area full of interactive exhibits showing the past, present and the future of the Desert Emirates. The night safari starts at 7pm and is an exciting way to spot animals peeking out of the trees and bushes. The safari ends with a session of feeding the giraffes some dinner! Wadi Adventure - Al Ain - United Arab Emirates

Wadi Adventure is the Middle East's first man made surfing, rafting and kayaking facility. It has the world's largest artificial surfing wave, three levels of white water rafting rapids and a long kayaking channel. It hosted the world's first ever rafting championship in 2016 where 27 countries participated. Other than water-based activities, Wadi Adventure also has an 'airpark'. The airpark has a 200m long zip line, suspended balance beams and a 13m high climbing wall. It also has a giant swing, which can hold up to three people at one time and gives a great adrenaline rush. Wadi Adventure is the perfect place to spend all day having fun and enjoying yourself.

Al Ain National Museum - Al Mutawaa - Al Ain - United Arab Emirates

The Al Ain National Museum brings the history, culture and heritage of UAE alive. It houses artefacts from the Stone Age and many local archeological finds. This museum may not be large, but it offers a very comprehensive reflection of the history of the country and the city. The museum consists of two main sections – the ethnographic section and the anthropological section. The ethnographic section illustrates the life of people who have lived here for the last 3,000 years, before oil was discovered. The anthropological section houses antiquities such as weapons, jewellery, pottery and coins from the country's ancient ages in a chronological order. The museum stays closed on Mondays.

Al Jahili Fort - Al Mutawaa - Al Ain - United Arab Emirates

Al-Jahili Fort was built as a defensive feature to protect the city from the invaders. It is one of the largest forts in Al-Ain and a class example of military architecture. Today, however, this fort has been restored and has become one of Al Ain's major points of interest. The north wing of the fort houses a permanent exhibition by British traveller and photographer Wilfred Thesiger, documenting his time spent in the desert in the 1940's. The west wing is used as a temporary exhibition centre and the east wing houses an information centre and a bookshop with books on the history and life of different emirates of the UAE.

Al Ain Oasis - Al Mutawaa - Al Ain - United Arab Emirates

Al Ain Oasis features a full programme of curated activities and exhibitions following its opening to the public as part of the UAE’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. The expansive palm plantations and the 3,000-year-old irrigation system make this an intriguing visit. It is a partially functioning date farm and home to almost 100 varieties of date trees. An ancient irrigation system, named falaj , is still used to irrigate the farm and other plants inside the oasis. There is a dedicated Al Ain Oasis Map that can be downloaded on your own and used to navigate through the public access areas.

Camel Souk - Al Ain - United Arab Emirates

Visiting the camel souk is a must do while at Al Ain. This is the best way to experience the local traditional culture. The last remaining camel market in UAE, where the animals are kept in pens and displayed like any other market for you to watch or buy! The show camels are black, the racing camels, tan, thin-hipped and long-legged, the milk camels are round of belly, and the breeding camels are huge with lots of teeth. There are also calves for sale. It's a stinky yet fascinating experience that hasn't been destroyed by throngs of tourists yet. Some traders may offer you a tour around the market, but you are totally free to explore on your own.

Camel Racing Track - Al Ain - United Arab Emirates

Camel racing is one of the oldest Emirati tradition and an experience that you will remember for the rest of your life. Al Ain has a large 10km track that hosts regular camel races. Some of the best breeds can be seen galloping around the tracks. The entrance to the race is free, and you can bet as much as you want on your favourite camels! But an even more fascinating sight is the 4X4 cars racing alongside the tracks. What are these you ask? These are the cars of the camel owners. They follow the camels along the side of the track, yelling at full volumes to encourage the jockeys and the animals to run faster. The winner stands to win outrageous prices, from huge sums of money to luxury cars!

Hili Fun City - Al Ain - United Arab Emirates

Hili Fun City is one of the largest theme parks in UAE. It has more than 30 attractions ranging from thrilling rides and adventures to gentle rides for children of all ages, including a roller coaster and an elevated sky-flyer. And located right next to it is the Al Ain Ice Rink, an Olympic- sized ice skating rink where you can chill out while the sun beats hot outside. Wednesdays are reserved for ladies only and the park is closed on Sundays.

Al Ain Palace Museum - Al Mutawaa - Al Ain - United Arab Emirates

Al Ain Palace Museum is the former residence of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan, the first ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The palace has been restored to its former glory and has beautiful interiors. The information inside is mostly in Arabic but the decor is worth admiring. The palace is divided into private, guest and official quarters by courtyards and landscaped with cacti, magnolia trees and palms. You can see the Sheikh's meeting room, take a tour of the huge kitchen and also see the master bedroom of the Sheikh and his wife.

How To Reach

By Bus: The best way to reach Al Ain is via a bus or a minibus. Etihad Airways also offers a complimentary coach service to Al Ain from Abu Dhabi airport. Buses depart hourly from the Abu Dhabi bus station and it takes about 2 hours to reach. Buses also run every 45 minutes from Al-Ghubaiba bus station in Dubai, from where it takes around 1 hour 45 minutes.

By Flight: You can take a flight from Delhi to Al Ain. Carriers like Etihad Airways and Jet Airways operate between Delhi to Al Ain, with a stopover at Abu Dhabi.

Al Ain is known as the Garden City, come and find out why by visiting the best places to visit in Al Ain.

Although it had been many years since I last visited,  I found on this trip that it hasn’t really changed a lot. It still has the feel of being a relaxed town with lots of greenery and culture.

Top places to Visit in Al Ain

Al ain oasis.

The joy of the oasis is being surrounded by lush greenery, something so many of us yearn for, especially in recent times. It has nearly 150,000 palm trees and over 100 varieties of dates and many other trees such as banana, mango, oranges, figs, papaya and sidr.

You can enter the farm area but, of course, be careful not to damage plants on the ground. Some areas have cleared ground, others tall green grasses and yet others a lush green carpet. You’ll forget you’re in a city surrounded by desert!

The Falaj system, the local irrigation system made up of channels, runs throughout the oasis and you will find different parts having water in the channels at different times of the day.

Al Ain Oasis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with other nearby locations which we’ll visit below.

In one of the photos, you’ll see an art exhibit by artists Dr Najat Makki and Mehrez Ellouz. At night time the sculptures are lit from within. At different times, you might find other art exhibits.

There is an Emirati restaurant at the entrance but we had drinks and ice cream and mini pancakes at the cafe inside the oasis. It was such a relaxing spot to just sit and listen to the birds in the trees, enjoy the shade of the trees and the light breeze and forget we were actually in the middle of a city.

Bicycles are available for rent for AED20 per hour and a family bike for AED50. Payment is cash only and it’s easiest to have the right money to avoid waiting for change.

Cycling through the lanes surrounded by greenery is a lovely experience when living in the desert the rest of the year and what better way to explore this wonderful hidden oasis! You’ll soon see why it’s one of the favourite places to visit in Al Ain.

Entrance to the oasis is free and opening times are 9am to 5pm.

Al Ain Palace

Now, let’s move next door to the wonderfully elegant Al Ain Palace Museum, which is not a palace with gold and domes and the like. It’s very simple and yet beautiful in its simplicity, its quietly ornate elements of design and the sense of tranquillity.

The unusual arches and symmetrical designs of the entrance entice you to enter to discover more. Within the first gate, there are several art pieces on the walls around the first small courtyard and the second inner wall. Be sure not to miss them.

The palace was the family home of Sheikh Zayed until the late 1960s and you can visit the rooms of Sheikha Fatima amongst many others.

The rooms are on two levels and set around several courtyards and two ponds which are connected by a water channel. They include bedrooms, guest rooms, majlises (reception rooms) kitchen, store, etc.

In the kitchen, you’ll see an enormous cooking pot that would hold enough to feed more than a whole village and that’s probably exactly what it did.

Looking at the small, simple bed that Sheikh Zayed and his wife slept in, I couldn’t help but wonder at the stark contrast between the simple life of a ruler then and that of even an average office worker now, never mind a ruler.

The Palace is just a couple of minutes from the oasis. You can walk around or drive. Entrance is free, hours are Saturday to Thursday 10am – 6 pm, Friday 2-6pm.

Qasr Al Muwaiji

Qasr Al Muwaiji was built in the second half of the 19th century and was the birthplace of the current ruler HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The fort now houses an exhibition telling the story of the ruling family of Abu Dhabi and also of the fort itself and the adjoining oasis. The exhibition is set within a glass structure blending modern and traditional architecture.

You can tour the fort and explore the North East Tower which was the home of Sheikh Zayed for some time. Although the original tower was demolished, it was rebuilt with the same materials and the same design.

You can also visit the oasis outside. If the weather allows, you can sit in the courtyard and enjoy the surroundings.

Al Qasr Al Muwaiji is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with other sites of importance in Al Ain.

Entrance is free and it is open daily 10-6, Fri 2-6.

Jahili Fort and Museum

Our next choice of places to visit in Al Ain is Al Jahili Fort, Al Ain was built at the end of the 19th century as a summer residence for the ruler of Abu Dhabi at the time, Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan.

The cylindrical four-storey tower was the first feature to be built (initially as a simple tower). You can climb up to the second storey. Next, the fort with four watchtowers was built and a wall enclosing the whole area to create a large courtyard. The fort has its own courtyard within.

Outside the walled area is Jahili Mosque built in the same period. It has the traditional open style as was common at the time. A similar, but older, mosque is the bin Sultan Mosque in Masfoot.

The fort holds temporary exhibitions (currently ‘Building with Earth’) and is home to the permanent exhibition dedicated to Mubarak bin London, aka Wilfred Thesiger.

The displays include many photos taken by Thesiger, one of the last great explorers, during his journey from Salalah to Abu Dhabi and many within Al Ain and Abu Dhabi itself.

It also exhibits some of his personal items used on the trip as well as many inspiring quotes.

Before visiting, you may want to read his book documenting his Salalah-Abu Dhabi trip through the Empty Quarter, Arabian Sands.

Thesiger was given the name Mubarak bin London in Abu Dhabi and he continued to have close connections to the UAE and friendships with Shaikh Zayed and many others over the years. He was awarded the Order of Independence by the UAE for his contributions.

Jahili Fort sits within Al Jahili park. Jahili Fort opening times are daily 10-6, Friday 2-6. The park has many lush green areas for sitting, play areas and facilities.

Green Al Ain!

Full of greenery, this area has hot springs and water wells which is a great place to hang out over barbecue. During weekends, plenty of people go out and have a relaxing picnic.

National Museum

Open since November 1971, this is the oldest museum in the UAE and showcases the city’s rich unique history and heritage. Beside the museum is the Sultan Fort which you can also drop by for a quick visit.

Al Ain Oasis has to be one of the most special places in the whole Emirate and the top place to visit in Al Ain.

The lush green oasis is spread over 1200 hectares of land and is home to over 147,000 date palms. It is one of the largest working oasis in the world.

The site is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site since it dates back over 3000 years. It is rich agricultural history and culture.

Visiting early morning is the best time to enjoy the walk in a cooler temperature . It is possible to get a guide from the entry.

Not to mention many visitors choose to rent a surrey which is 4 seater cart that is peddled similar to a bike.

The surrey offers some shade and is perfect for little families, with two little seats for small kids at the front. Alternatively, walking is just as enjoyable!

A map is provided to visitors to explore the many walled walkways lined with palm trees. The whole environment is so unique and super beautiful and so incredibly well maintained.

It is possible to walk into the palm tree field and see the irrigation system flowing through.

One of the lovely parts of the experience is seeing dates being harvested. Men on traditional bikes have baskets full of dates for sale. We picked up a box to take home, and they were so delicious and affordable for a massive portion.

The Beehive Tombs is another incredible historical site based in the Al Hili Archaeological Park. The tombs were built in the Bronze Age over 5000 years ago.

The tombs are about 2-3 metres wide with a narrow passageway. Each tomb is thought to have the remains of between two and five people.

There is also a wave pool to try surfing, not to mention the high rope obstacle course which is not for the faint-hearted. There is also a zip-line and multiple pools for both adults and kids.

It is a fantastic location to cool down on a warm day and enjoy adventurous activities with the backdrop of Jebel Hafeet. There are tonnes of dining options including a snack bar, restaurant and cafe .

Al Ain Desert Safari

Must See Places to Visit in Al Ain

If you have planned a visit to Dubai, or any of the other cities in the United Arab Emirates and you want to see places more traditional of the region and away from the typical tourist trail… then take a day trip to Al Ain. In 2011 Al Ain was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first in the UAE.

This makes a visit to Al Ain very worthwhile and highly recommended in our book. Let us share some of the highlights of the garden city of Al Ain, each in its own right a truly unique reason to plan a trip.

Getting to Al Ain

A drive from Dubai to Al Ain will take you no more than two hours. And I’m going to recommend that you rent a car because this will give you the benefit of freedom while getting around. We enjoyed taking our time to see each place in detail and to explore at our own free will.

Of course there are alternative solutions if you choose not to drive. Public transport is always an option, check this post for more information about schedules and timetables from Dubai to Al Ain.

Remember that if you are visiting Al Ain during the current pandemic you may be required to present a recent PCR or DPI test at the Dubai/Abu Dhabi border. This can be done a couple of days in advance if you choose or at the border crossing point (please check the local websites for updates). We chose to visit the Ghantoot DPI screening centre two days ahead of our visit.

Our Top Must See Places to Visit

In no particular order, below is a list of our favourite places to visit in Al Ain. Pick and choose to create your own favourite list and itinerary.

We would recommend that you stay one night in Al Ain to get the best from your time in this beautiful city. See our recommendations for accomodation options and places to stay at the end of this post.

Al Jahili Fort

This fort is very special to the Arabian Peninsula as it dates back to 1890 and was built by Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa the first ruler of the UAE. Given the nomadic nature of the region the age of this fort provides a unique insight into the history, culture and life as it was in the previous century.

Great lengths have been taken in the restoration process of the fort to maintain the authenticity of the building. The materials used are consistent with those locally available to the region such as mud and the date palm. This is explained in a short film in the visiting area of the fort.

Take a walk up and around the small tower on the right side of the fort. To the back left are the royal quarters which demonstrate a simple, yet beautiful display of Arabian design and architecture.

One of my favourite sections of the Jahili fort is the permanent art display of Wilfred Thesiger. An English explorer in the 1950’s came to Arabian peninsula to explore Oman and the United Arab Emirates before they became two countries. An account of his journey is presented through a series of black and white photographs and film on display in the front left section of the fort. Interestingly, Al Ain is where Thesiger finished his journey, deciding to stay on to get a better understanding of life in the region during this time.

The fort is situated within a large park. A perfect place to stop for lunch or to let the kids have a play. There are parking options around the fort and across the road from the main entrance. There is no entrance free, which makes a visit easy on the pocket.

Al Ain Oasis

Fifteen years living in Dubai and I cannot understand why I have not heard of this Oasis before now. Following some random googling of Al Ain, I stumbled across a review of this 1200 hectares of oases. It seems such a shame to me that I haven’t visited before now AND that more people have not heard of it. However, I suppose it also adds to the beauty of the Al Ain Oasis, as the tranquility and quietness is possibly what makes it so special.

The Oasis is divided into a maze of smaller fenced off independently owned farms. A centrally paved path runs within and around the oasis which creates an easy access to each section.

But what makes the Oasis so unique is the Falaj system that runs throughout. A falaj is a traditional man made water system that evenly divides and carries water to where it is needed. It brings and distributes water from underground sources.

Historically speaking a falaj was very important to the local culture, a source of community and togetherness. They are the ideal water solution in the harsh and dry landscape of the Arabian Peninsula. Further to this, they date back some 3000 years, which makes them quite an extraordinary thing to see in action.

Entrance is free, but you might to consider renting a bike to get around inside the oasis. We paid a small hourly fee, and were not charged for the extra hour that we had the bike. Overall, it was a great way to see the entire area, and it saved the legs of the younger members of the family. You will be able to stop and explore inside some of the more beautifully cared for oasis and falaj systems.

Al Hili Archeological Park

Only 15 minutes out of the central city is the Al Hili Archeological park. Unfortunately, we were unable to see this as the park was closed during our visit. However, this is a space we would liked to have seen.

In the 1970’s these tombs and structures were restored. And they date back to between 3000 and 2000 BC. The information that I have read about this archeological park appear to suggest it is an interesting place to explore, rich in culture and history. Green Mubazzarah Thermal Springs

Likewise, the thermal springs were also closed due to Covid restrictions. Before our visit I had never hear of thermal springs in the United Arab Emirates. Therefore, I was very surprised to discover this little treasure.

It sounds as though it is a busy place, particularly in the evenings and weekends, but a great place to visit if you are looking to soak weary feet. And also to experience something a little unique in this region.

Jebel Hafit/Hafeet Lookout

For a very grand view over Al Ain, head to the lookout. From Al Ain, this drive will take around 30 minutes to the very top. From one side, you’ll look down over the Jebel Hafit Desert Park and on the other side Al Ain.

This is a popular picnic destination for locals and expats alike. Lining the footpaths, picnic mats and tents are sprawled out as families and smalls groups of friends enjoy their time together.

Besides this, there are a couple of places to order food and a small play park for the kids to get a run around.

Jebel Hafit Desert Park

The Jebel Hafit Desert Park is brand new… well new in terms of access any how.

On our mission to explore Al Ain we began by looking for somewhere to spend the night. And boy were we lucky to find this place. It had opened to the public only a few weeks before our visit. This is the ideal destination for a unique stay. Read below for more details on the accomodation options available.

There is an entrance fee to the park, but if you intend to stay the night, the entrance fee is waived. Getting around is a little bumpy and the park may tell you that you need a 4×4 to get around. But we were driving a small SUV (all wheel drive) and had no difficulty on the well maintained gravel roads.

The Beehive Tombs

The tombs were most definitely my favourite thing to explore. It was uncrowded and gave me a deep sense of the history that is seldom seen in the UAE.

Keeping in mind, there are two locations to see the tombs, and the ones pictured below are the restored tombs. These are the closest to the main information centre and can be accessed independently. But if you want to see the unrestored tombs you will be required to take a guide.

A little further into the park, situated near the traditional tents, is the White Wadi. The dry wadi bed is a remarkable picture as the white stone has washed down from the peaks of Jebel Hafit above. As a result, the white stone stands in strong contrast against the desert coloured stone everywhere else.

Hiking, Buggy Tours or Camel Rides

For a more active experience head to the information centre. Here you’ll be able to book camel or horse rides for varying lengths of time. And if you fancy a quicker pace, check out the buggy tours. There are also a couple of hikes available and these can be arranged in advance with the team at the centre.

Camping Options

Now there are several options here for camping and the team at the Jebel Hafit Desert Park have created something for everyone. If you like the comforts then you’ll appreciate the Dome Tents. But if you are travelling on smaller budget, or with a larger group then you’ll love the Traditional Tents. And if your fancy the DIY approach then public camping is also available. Bookings are made directly via their website linked above.

Each of the camping options are in clusters but in seperate locations dotted around the park, and each offering a slightly different experience. For example, if you don’t mind sleeping on the traditional floor cushions (majlis) with shared ammenities then the traditional tents will suit just fine.

Alternatively, in the Dome and Bubble Tents you will have your own private bathroom, luxury bedding, a fridge and hairdryer.

Each location provides a stone fire place. And there is certainly something pretty special about being out of the city, sitting around a fireplace, and toasting marshmallows while star gazing. We can definitely recommend this experience to any type of traveller.

A Weekend Getaway to Al Ain or a Day Trip

We found that with all of the beautiful places to visit in Al Ain, we would thoroughly recommend a two day trip. While the drive is not long, there is certainly enough in this city to justify an over night trip. And with camping accomodation options available, offering reasonably priced over night lodgings, we think… well hey… might as well stay!

In summary, there is a reason Al Ain is noted as the garden city of the United Arab Emirates. It is undoubtedly beautiful, with culture and history a strong feature of the community. We loved it, and we think you will too!

Al Ain Palace Museum

This re-instated fort was once home to the Founding Father of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who lived here before moving to Abu Dhabi in 1966. The bedouin-style structure houses a culturally immersive experience of life in the emirate before the discovery of oil, exhibits that give insights into the origin story of the Founding Father, and a room devoted to the Holy Quran including teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), inscribed on the ceiling.

Al Jahili Fort

This heritage-infused site that was built close to two centuries ago is one of the largest that has ever been built in the UAE. Initially, Al Jahili Fort served as the summer residence of HH Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan before British forces assumed military use of the tower until 1970. Today, with major refurbishment completed and the addition of visitor features, Al Jahili Fort is home to a whole host of exhibitions.

Al Qattara Arts Centre

Housed in a traditional mud-brick tower house, this arts centre strives to provide both a stage for the creative works of locally-based talent, and a platform to create them. Inside, you can find art, archaeological and heritage exhibits, dedicated spaces for music, handicrafts, drawing and painting, workshopping space, a digital room for photography and a special calligraphy studio. In addition to the itinerary of classes, Qattara Arts Centre also has numerous cultural exhibitions for the public.

Al Ain Oasis

Al Ain Oasis was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 2011. Spread over a vast 3,000 acres, it is one of the world’s oldest permanently inhabited settlements, dating back more than 4,000 years. Wander through its tranquil pathways, with more than 147,000 date palm trees providing a lovely green canopy, on a scenic walk and simply marvel at its beauty.

Zaman Lawal Heritage Village

Housed at Telal Resort Al Ain, the Zaman Lawal Heritage Village lets you step back in time to the Bedouin era. It features a traditional souq where you can shop for local crafts. Explore the House of Pearls, which showcases the region’s rich pearl diving history; Al Masjid, the Islamic place of prayer; and a traditional Arabic restaurant, Khattar, serving up traditional Middle Eastern flavours to savour as part of your culturally enriching experience.

Qasr Al Muwaiji

Qasr Al Muwaiji is a permanent exhibition at Al Ain Palace, and is housed in a stunning glass building in the main site’s courtyard. Here, you can follow the origin story of the palace and its famous former resident, H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The visionary Sheikh was born and raised in Qasr Al Muwaiji, which makes this special location the perfect place for illuminating the life of the UAE’s late ruler.

Get close to some of nature’s finest at Al Ain Zoo. Here, visitors can have breakfast with giraffes, get up, close and personal with some penguins, and more. If you’re more the type that prefers a safari-style experience, the Al Ain Zoo offers one across a 217-hectare stretch at the foothills of wonderful Jebel Jais. Keep an eye out for Africa’s Big Five, as well as zebra, ostrich, and many members of the deer family.

Qasr Al Hosn*

This coral stone fort, set back from the Abu Dhabi Corniche, is the historical heart of Abu Dhabi. The site includes the renovated historical home of Abu Dhabi’s Al Nayhan family and a museum dedicated to the history of the Emirate.

There’s lots to see and do, including interactive experiences suitable for the whole family. It is also worth visiting the House of the Artisans on the same site to learn more about traditional handicrafts and cultural practices.

Emirates Palace*

Whilst staying at the phenomenal Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental might be outside most people’s budgets, it’s still worth booking a table for morning coffee or afternoon tea in this glitzy hotel’s lobby lounge. Indulge in a gold-dusted cappuccino, top-quality cakes and pastries, and their signature camel burger if you’re feeling very brave.

Be sure to check out The Founder’s Memorial just outside the palace grounds, where the Abu Dhabi Corniche joins the Abu Dhabi breakwater.

This is a remarkable site offering Muslims, Christians and Jews the chance to worship and learn about each other’s religion in one place. Part of the Saadiyat Cultural District, they are open daily for tours, welcoming all religions.

Mina Dhow Port and Fish Market

Adjacent to Abu Dhabi Corniche is the old dhow port, which is filled with traditional boats and fishing baskets that are still used today. The old fish market has been replaced with a modern building, but it’s still worth a visit.

The Galleria Mall*

Yes, it’s a shopping centre, but it’s also a cultural experience. The huge shopping centre includes the international brands that we’re all familiar with, but it also contains high-end luxury boutiques, amazing cafes and restaurants, roof-top parks and various indoor entertainment facilities.

For a completely different shopping experience, check out Madinat Zayed Mall . With its gold souq and fabric shops, this is quite the end of the scale but, nonetheless, can bring a treasure trove of bargains for souvenir hunters!

Observation Deck at 300*

Located on the 74th floor of the Conrad Hotel in Abu Dhabi Corniche’s Etihad Towers, the Observation Deck provides stunning 360-degree views of the city. It also serves a fantastic afternoon tea, should you wish to indulge.

Abu Dhabi Breakwater and Heritage Village*

Many cruise ship passengers will be bundled off to the Abu Dhabi Heritage Village, once Abu Dhabi’s main tourist attraction. The replica of a traditional Emirati fishing village includes houses, a mosque, traditional workshops and agricultural buildings with live animals.

There is a cafe and a small souk where souvenirs can be purchased. The site is quite old, but it is still worth visiting to see how life has changed in the emirate over the years and to take stunning photos of the modern city opposite.

Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation & Children’s Library

A lovely place to visit for an hour or two on a hot or wet day, the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation provides exhibition spaces to local artists and is home to the beautiful Abu Dhabi Children’s Library.

Manarat Al Saadiyat*

The Manarat Al Saadiyat Arts Centre was the first building in the Saadiyat Cultural District and includes exhibition spaces and art and photography studios. The centre provides several workshops and special events throughout the year.

This unique new waterfront development is not just architecturally beautiful; it has become a real foodies’ nighttime hot spot, very popular with locals. This is your place if you’d like an evening promenade and to soak in the modern Emirati atmosphere.

In addition to ample dining venues, you’ll find a very swish cinema, the National Aquarium (more below!) The Bridge health & wellness hub, Adrenark Adventure for indoor kids’ adrenaline activities and Pixoul gaming centre for e-sports fans.

Other Landmark Buildings in Abu Dhabi City

There are a number of landmark buildings in Abu Dhabi that have received international attention for their design. You cannot go inside most of these buildings, but they are worthy of a scenic driveby to appreciate the incredible modern side of the city. These include:

• Aldar HQ —This circular building in the Al Raha Beach area of the city is meant to represent an oyster shell. It is not open to visitors, but you can take photos from the nearby Al Raha Mall. The building serves as the headquarters of building giant Aldar.
• Abu Dhabi’s bendy tower, Capital Gate , is an engineering marvel. Inspired by a desert whirlwind, the tower is home to the Andaz Hotel. Cocktails on the 18th-floor terrace are highly recommended if you want to really experience this incredible building and its tremendous views.
• The WTC Mall , built on the site of the old Abu Dhabi Souk (which burnt down in the 2004) was designed by renowned Architect Norman Foster. Part of the building is a modern shopping centre with a variety of international stores and dining opportunities. A small section, on the ground floor, more closely resembles a traditional souk with date and spice shops and purveyors of carpets, pashminas and other handicrafts.
• The Sheikh Zayed Bridge , designed by Zaha Hadid is a fine example of modern architecture. Particularly spectacular at night time, this bridge is one of Abu Dhabi’s definitive landmarks.
• Al Bahar Towers – locally nicknamed “the Pineapple Towers” these twin towers are commercial office buildings so they are not open to visitors, but can be marvelled upon as you pass the What makes their design unique is the dynamic and responsive façade

With tourism at the heart of the UAE’s offering, there are many spectacular entertainment offerings in Abu Dhabi that will appeal to families and a broader audience of thrill seekers, these include:

The National Aquarium*

Opened in 2021, the National Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the Middle East and home to 46,000 animals. The thematically designed layout introduces visitors to different animals that live in different geographical areas. There are behind-the-scenes tours, the chance to feed fish, and the opportunity to get closer to the animals with various animal encounter packages.

Snow Abu Dhabi

If the outside temperature gets too much, head to Snow Abu Dhabi where the atmosphere is kept at a chilly 2 degrees. This icey indoor theme park is fun for the whole family with winter themed rides and a variety of other experiences.

Yas Waterworld*

Experience “water’s greatest play ground” at Yas Waterworld. This sprawling site has over 40 iconic rides, and it’s set to get even bigger as construction work commences on 15 new rides and attractions this summer. The park features areas for babies, toddlers and younger children, as well as two lazy rivers, a huge wave pool, a 4D Water Cinema and various slides and tubes of differing scariness!

An extension to the park has been announced, and construction is well underway for “The Lost City” which will add a further 18 rides and attractions to the park in 2025.

Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi

A great day out any time of year, this fully indoor theme park—the largest in the Middle East (it recently lost the title of the largest in the world!)—has something for everyone.

Whether you’re a Batman fan looking to meet the Dark Knight in person, seeking a thrilling ride through space with the Green Lantern, or fancy a leisurely log flume ride through Bedrock with The Flintstones, you will have a good time at this thoughtfully designed theme park.

A Harry Potter extension to the park has been announced, but no definitive time frame has been given yet, not details of what rides and attractions will be involved but its sure to be epic once it arrives!

SeaWorld Abu Dhabi

The newest addition to Yas Island’s theme park scene, Seaworld is both a theme park and a marine conservation centre. Offering 8 different realms to explore, this is the perfect indoor activity for hot days, especially good for younger children and those who like a more sedate theme park experience!

Ferrari World*

Featuring the world’s fastest roller coaster, the Formula Russo and several other high-octane experiences, Ferrari World is the perfect place for adrenaline junkies.

Even if you don’t fancy some of the more intimidating rides, the park has many family-friendly aspects, including gentler rides and a soft play area. Christmas is an especially nice time to visit when the park goes all out for their Winterfest.

Ascend to dizzy heights at Clymb. Featuring the world’s biggest indoor skydiving flight chamber as well as the Middle East’s tallest climbing wall, Clymb is the ultimate experience for any thrill-seeker.

Yas Marina Circuit

Are you not in town for the Grand Prix? Kids can enjoy testing out their driving skills at the Yas Marina Karting circuit. Special sessions are held for kids (5 to 7 years) and juniors (4 to 12 years). Adults can pay to borrow a racing car and test their skills.

There are also opportunities during the week to walk, jog, and cycle around the track on open track nights run by TrainYas and Abu Dhabi Sports Council. These are completely free to attend, you just need to register, and bikes can be hired if you’re just in town visiting.

Al Forsan Interantional Sports Resort

A mixed sports venue found in Khalifa City (out the airport side of town), this is a bit of a hidden gem for visitors. You’ll find here the opportunity to go wakeboarding, paintballing, archery, shooting, karting and an equestrian centre, all part of the lineup.

A Day At The Beach

As well as beach clubs, Abu Dhabi has several public beaches too. Most are free or have a very minimal cover charge.

The two main beaches in the city are the Corniche *, which sits along the end of Abu Dhabi Island, and Saadiyat Beach *, acclaimed for its wildlife encounters and real crashing waves on the soft white sand.

Jubail Mangrove Park

Traverse the maze of boardwalks through the Jubail Mangrove Park and enjoy encounters with numerous species of local wildlife. Look our for the tide times as you’ll have quite a different experience between high and low tide -either way it’s the perfect place to spend some time outside.

Eastern Mangroves

A lush green paradise awaits at eastern mangroves. Take a stroll along the Al Gurm Corniche, or get closer to nature by hiring a kayak or donut boat and exploring the network of waterways that punctuate this unique mangrove forest.

Umm Al Emarat Park*

Whether you’re travelling as a couple or part of a large family group, a trip to Umm Al Emarat Park is highly recommended. The beautifully designed area features stunning fountains, flower gardens and open areas for sport and relaxation.

There’s a specially designed children’s park with a splash pad and petting zoo and several playgrounds dotted around the extensive space. Winter evenings bring a variety of recreational activities, including family movies on the big screen, craft activities, and markets. There are several good-quality restaurants on site, as well as kiosks offering take-away options.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

Yas Bay Waterfront

A great spot to spend a lazy Sunday, Yas Bay Waterfront combines a leisure and fine dining destination with a number of recreational facilities. Take a stroll along the promenade, or let the kids play at one of the playgrounds or skatepark before enjoying breakfast in one of the many cafes or restaurants.

Alternatively, visit in the evening and enjoy watching the sun set over the city as you sip a carefully crafted cocktail on the rooftop terrace of the Siddharta Lounge. Don’t forget to check out what’s on at the Etihad Arena when you’re in town – whether it’s a broadway musical or a big name band, there’s always something going on.

Beach hotels to try in Abu Dhabi

In a city made up of a series of islands, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of hotels claiming beachfrontage clubs around Abu Dhabi. Areas you can look at include those along the Corniche and a big selection around Ras Al Akhdar ( Emirates Palace end including the InterCon , Conrad , Gran d Hyatt , Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan & Bab Al Qasr ).

In the old Tourist Club area, you’ll find family favourites Beach Rotana , Le Meridien & the Sheraton . Don’t forget “Between the Bridges” too, The Ritz-Carlton , Fairmont , Traders & Shangri-La .

Saadiyat Island

If it is the tranquillity of real waves you are after, you can’t go past the selection of Saadiyat luxury resorts that line the shores of the Arabian Gulf. Each offers residents and tourists alike a luxurious getaway only minutes from the city. You’ll find each has multiple pools, kids clubs, and dining on offer and, of course, direct access to the stunning beach.

Yas Plaza contains a plethora of well-appointed, budget-friendly 4 and 5* hotels, including the Yas Island Rotana , Centro , The Crowne Plaza , the Radisson Blu and the Park Inn . Guests staying at these hotels receive complimentary passes to the nearby Yas Beach Club and often receive theme park tickets as part of their booking deal.

Just around the corner at the newer Yas Bay development is the more luxurious, Hilton Yas Bay , with its extensive pool area and adjacent Cafe Del Mar Beach Club. There are no hotels on Hudayriat Island. However, it is possible to stay at the Bab Al Nojoum Hudayriat Camp and Villas , which offers a huge range of accommodations from the most basic of camping tents with communal facilities to glamping chalets and luxury overwater villas for an exquisite and unique stay close to the city

More Island Hopping

If you’re looking for a real desert island getaway with a boat ride included in the price, two daycation or staycation options near the city that you could consider are:

• Al Maya Island is a good family choice because of its large pool and dining options.
• Nurai Island Resort – a pricey paradise, perfect for a special occasion.

Whilst most visitors to Abu Dhabi stay within the city, there are plentiful places to visit in the rest of Abu Dhabi Emirate. From magnificent sand dunes to stunning desert islands, Abu Dhabi really has it all.

An Abu Dhabi Desert Safari

The easiest way to get out into the desert is to take a desert safari from your city hotel. Such safaris take you to a nice spot of dunes, where you can experience a variety of activities, including sand surfing and dune bashing. There is often an Arabic-style barbecue and entertainment in the form of belly dancers, a tanoura dancer, or an oud player. The experience usually lasts 5 or 6 hours in total.

Arabian Nights Village

A charming desert retreat. It is possible to visit the village for the evening or stay overnight. Overnight visitors can choose from 3 different styles of accommodation. In addition to accommodation, overnight guests benefit from using the swimming pool and breakfast. Staying overnight is a real treat, and waking up in the desert is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Qasr al Sarab

The ultimate in desert luxury; this is arguably the best hotel resort in the country. Sitting around a 2-hour drive from the city, the sprawling ‘Palace of the Mirage’ is a truly welcome site in the expanse of golden dunes that surround it. From the shimmering sand-swept entrance, you are transported to another world.

Tilal Liwa – Madinat Zayed

Located just beyond the western region city of Madinat Zayed.  There’s not a great deal to see and do for most family visitors around Madinat Zayed, outside of the Al Dhafra Festival in the winter.  However, Tilal Liwa provides a 4-star alternative to the more expensive desert resorts. Enjoy the pool and outdoor desert sports.  

Sir Bani Yas Island

Offering an altogether very different desert island experience, Sir Bani Yas is, in fact, a nature reserve filled with many endangered species from the Arabian peninsula and beyond.

Guests can stay at the Anantara Desert Islands Resort & Spa , or there are two villa accommodation options, one directly on the beach and the other a little further inland.

The ancestral home of the Bani Yas people and a long-time favourite location for those with 4x4s wanting to take on the epic dunes. Much infrastructure and development has been happening in recent years to make this small desert village into a tourist attraction of its own.

Exploring deep into the desert is naturally the number one attraction, but you can now explore the beauty of this remote spot deep in the Empty Quarter from the luxury of your own villa with the opening of Bab Al Nojoum Bateen Liwa .

Al Quaa Milky Way Spot

Famous for being the best star-gazing spot in the UAE, unfortunately, it’s one of those places that’s become a bit of a victim of its own popularity; on new moon nights, you’d be mistaken for thinking it was the E11 with the amount of cars and light pollution.

Your only true way to explore this location properly is to find a guide who can take you much deeper into the dunes. For this, we’d recommend Arabian Wanderers . They offer both family tours and adult-only tour groups for an overnight adventure at each new moon (they’ll take care of all your camping gear as well as hotel pickups if required.)

If camping doesn’t take your fancy with all the sand, you can also check out these glamping options – a few in the Abu Dhabi Emirate. Alternatively, another desert resort option to consider close to Al Ain is Telal Resort (not to be confused with Tilal Liwa – though note it’s closed for renovations in the summer of 2024).

If you are yet to explore the Oasis City, get this one on your bucket list for this winter!

Most families in Abu Dhabi have probably made it to the Al Ain Zoo at some point – if you’ve not been in a while definitely worth a re-visit as they’re making improvements all the time. The Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre is also one of the best educational displays you’ll find in the UAE. The tickets still remain amazingly good value!

Elsewhere in Al Ain, you may want to include on your sightseeing list:

• Take a stroll through the historic Al Ain Oasis and hunt out the other UNESCO World Heritage Sites spotted across the city, including Hili Archaelogical Park.
• Make the mountain drive up to Jebel Hafeet and enjoy far-reaching views of the UAE and Oman.
• Visit the Jebel Hafeet Desert Park and explore the 5000-year-old beehive tombs and stay in the unique bubble dome tents.
• Explore the many museums of Al Ain, including the Palace Museum , Qasr al Muwaiji & Al Jahili Fort .
• Drive through the Al Ain Camel Market – the only one of its kind left in the UAE! And experience the local hum of the city with an evening at Souq Al Qattara in the winter (Thursday to Saturday).

On the way to Al Ain, you will pass through the area of Al Wathba , home to several interesting natural sites. These include:

• The Al Wathba Wetland Reserve – Open only during the cooler months, the wetland reserve provides a home for 250 species of bird, including the Greater Flamingo, 37 plants species and a diverse range of aquatic life.
• The Al Wathba Salt Lake – Azure waters and salty white mounds make this a very photogenic spot.
• The Fossil Dunes – Impressive rock formations carved by the desert winds.

NB – these Al Wathba sites aren’t always open to the public as work to put proper tourism infrastructure in place while preserving the natural beauty and natural ecosystems is ongoing.

Dubai: Summer has officially started in the UAE, and if you are wondering how you will be able to keep the family entertained during the school break, here are five fun things you can do in Sharjah.

1. Sharjah Aquarium

Want to explore marine life as it swims around you? Sharjah Aquarium is a great budget-friendly place to go to. The aquarium has 20 tanks that recreate different local aquatic environments, from coral reefs and rock pools to lagoons and mangroves and an indoor walkway allows close-up viewing of the marine animals.

Ticket prices: Dh25

Location: Sharjah Aquarium is in Al Khan Old area. As you enter Sharjah on the E11 highway, take the exit on to Al Khan Road/Al Majaz area. Drive straight as you pass the Al Qasba development to your left and take a left from the Burj Square roundabout, to reach the aquarium.

2. Arabia’s Wildlife Centre

If your children enjoy going to the zoo, this is an indoor experience that will let them see flamingoes, baboons, cheetahs, and leopards, in a temperature-controlled environment. Arabia’s Wildlife Centre in Sharjah is a conservatory turned edutainment centre and one of the largest homes for rare animals in the Arabian Peninsula, including the Arabian Oryx, the UAE’s national animal, and the Arabian leopard, the region’s famous big cat. It is part of the larger Sharjah Desert Park, which has a Natural History Museum, the Children's Farm, and the Islamic Botanical Garden.

Ticket cost

Children under the age of 12 enter for free. Tickets for those above the age of 12 years – Dh21.50 This ticket is for the Sharjah Desert Park, so you will also be able to visit the other locations in the park with the same ticket.

Weekdays – 9am to 5.30pm Friday – 2pm to 5.30pm Saturday and Sunday – 11am to 5.30pm The park is closed on Tuesdays

How to get there

By bus: If you are coming from Dubai, you can take the E311 bus, which departs from the Al Qusais bus station and get off at the ‘Awir CMC’ bus stop. From there, you can take a taxi to the park, which will take approximately 24 minutes.

By car: Sharjah Desert Park is located off the E88/S128 highway (Al Dhaid Road). After you pass the Sharjah Cement Factory to your left, take the exit for Siyouh Suburb/S151. You will arrive at a roundabout. Take the fourth exit on the roundabout and continue on Interchange no. 9, which will then lead you towards the Sharjah Desert Park.

3. Rain Room

Missing the rain during the summer months? You can walk through a downpour of water without getting wet at the Rain Room, a modern art installation. The responsive environment follows visitors as they navigate the darkened underground space, preventing the rain from falling directly above any detected human presence. The experience lasts for 15 minutes.

- Adults: Dh25 - Students: Dh15 (up to 22 years, ID required) - Teachers: 15 AED (ID required) - Children: Free admission up to five years of age - People with Disabilities and one companion: Free admission

Opening hours:

Saturday to Thursday: 9am to 9pm Friday: 4pm to 10pm

The Rain Room is in the Al Majarrah area. Take the Al Sharq Street and after you pass the Rolla area, the Rain Room will be to your left, next to the Al Mujarrah Park.

4. Sharjah academy of astronomy, space sciences and technology

With a planetarium and observatory, this centre is a great place to visit if you want to introduce children to outer space and the universe. The centre organises many astronomical, physical, and educational events that are suitable for different age groups, in addition to hosting many exhibitions.

Ticket prices: Dh50 for visitors aged 13 years and above Dh25 for children from the age of four to 12 years.

The centre is in the University City area of Sharjah. Take Maleha Street (S112) and head towards the University City. Once you reach the University City, follow signs for the Sharjah academy of astronomy, space sciences and technology.
