Resurecting an 86 Voyager XII

Hello every one. New to the forum here so Howdy from Maryland. Was crusing near my neighborhood a couple weeks ago and saw a Voyager sitting on a shipping pallet in fron of a trailer garage. Wnet and checked it out and turned out it was for sale, best offer. The guy selling the bike brought out a battery jumper and started it up, did not run good but it ran. I gave him 600.00 for it and took it home. Now I am in the process of fixing it up. Leaking fork seals, lousey idle, dry rotted brake lines, a stereo that won't make noise, and quite a few cosmetic issues. The only good thing is it runs and it is all there. After cleaning out the carbs I got it to run a little better, but with a rough idle. When I let it down to about 1100 - 1000 rpm's I can hear what is best described as a chain rattle. I suspect the timming chain or of the likes. I'll post some pic's soon and if any one has any sugestions on this rebuild I would sure appreciate it. I have been ridding and fixing cars, trucks, boats and such for 25 years, but this is my first Asian bike restore. My first motorcycle was a 1978 Z1 and it was a blast. I am just finishing the restoration of a 61 Matchless G12CS 650cc twin and that was a fun project. But I plan on using this Voyager as my car for good gas milage and fun ridding. Hope to hear from a few of you experienced Voyagers out there.

I am doing a lot of Ebay shopping right now looking for bargins. Baltimore cycle salvage is also supposed to reopen 1 June and they have always been a great source for parts.  

Welcome to the board. I too had a Z1, way back when... Have fun putting the voyage back together again. Resurrecting a 20 year old scoot can be a challenge. That's the reason I'm riding a 2000 Nomad, gave up on trying to maintain a 20 year old Yamaha Venture. The chain rattle you are hearing may be the cam chain. I think that the chain adjuster is similar to the one we had on the Z1s. Double check the manual. Uh...you do have a shop manual, don't you? If no, get one. You're gonna need it. Enjoy and don't be afraid to ask questions both here and in the maintenance section. We can easily lead you astray...  

Nice looking scoot Bigjohn. I just hope to make the Voyager useable. My cool bike is my 01 1200C sportster. Put 22K miles onit last year. Hope to save it a little wear and tear of daily commuting with the Kaw. Thanks for the reply and encouragement. I pulled the oil filter last night and let the goo for oil drain for 3 hours. I'll refill it with a new filter tonight to see if it helped any. Looks like the oil is about 15K old. And I'm still trying to get the stereo to work. I just won a replacement AMP on ebay, maybe that will be the problem. See ya all soon.

I got the bike running half decient Monday and the engine has a nasty chain slapping like noise at or below 1500 rpm's. Sounds like it is comming from behind the alternator mounting point. The only thing i can atriute it to is a streched alternator drive chain or worn guides. I did find an engine from a wrecked bike that has 7,000 miles on it and the seller says it is a nice quiet engine. Any hints on what I can see with out hearing it running? 600 cash is the deal, and with out the ambition to split a case and replace parts I dont know of a lot of other options.  

I guess you have to ask yourself a couple questions. Do you want to spend as much for a new engine as you did for the whole bike? and do you want to swap out the engine? If it were me I would split the cases to see what it may be. It may be just the cam chain tightener. You wouldn't have to split the cases for that. Have you used the screwdriver as a stethascope to pin down the sound? The sounds can get deceptive at times. How does it sound at higher RPM? Cam chain sound usuallly dies down as RPM goes up.  

it was a 86 one? if its the 86 one, you have the model with the weak starterchain and tensioner. that indeed located behind the altenator. the starter chain connect the startermotor, altenator to the crank. only bad thing about it is that you have to pull the engine out and split the crankcase to renew it. at parts it wil cost you about $300,- and a hour or 10 to pull it split it and rebild all. you can get the parts cheap from a guy called Carl Leo. he only buy an dsell used and new parts to XII drivers for fair prices. you can ask help on it at the forum for tech update. http://www.voy.com/13854/ or contact Carl Leo at [email protected] cu if you need any more help mail me aad The Dutchman  

the problem of the 86 model is .... the 86 model have 2 problems 1: a weak starterchain and tensioner. there for kawasaki made a better one and bild it in the '87/6 models. 2: a bad ignitor (partnumber 21119-1179) in the 87/6 model they put the better one (partnumber 21119-1248 ) it give the bike a better start and a low crankup time with a low battery. you have to do 2 things with the 86 one. 1: keep battery alway at 100% power by a battery tender. 2: buy the new model ignitor (new or secondhand) aad  

AAD, thanks for the info, and thank you all for the assist. I will check the ignighter PN tonight. I leave 0400 tomorrow morning to pick up that low milage engine. I figure with the rest of the bike in fair condition I will end up with a good mechanical platformand work on the cosmetic issues once I have it on the road and working. As long as this engine pans out, I will probably work on the old engine in spare time (whats that?) and hang on to it for a while unless I run across some one who needs it worse than I do. Iheadout on a 2K mile MC trip with my dad Monday down the Blue Rige Parkway and Smokey mountains so I won't get much done on it next week. But when we get back look out, it's engine swapping time. I plan on taking a lot of pic's so if you are interested IM me and I'll share them.

I have the out dated igniter unit Well, I went to Georgia last weeka nd picked up an engine that only had 7K miles on it. In the process of installingnow. I am doing a lot of cleaning up as I go so it is taking some extra time. I did the research on the bike and found the old igniter part number is installed. So I am now looing for an updated one. If any one can help me find the new style I'd sure appreciate it. I also need a set of 4 new carb intake tubes as the old ones fell apart when removing them to pull carbs during dissassembly. Keep those sugestions comming and I'll keep you posted on progress.  

good used parts for XII if your looking for good and fair priced parts for the XII mail with Carl Leo. he is the one that parting the XII out. just to keep the XII drivers going on the weels. thise is his mailadres. [email protected] for the ignitor keep your focus on Ebay. a lot of used parts there for the XII. just look for Kawasaki Voyager and hit enter. the ignitor wil do new at mama kawa about 400-500 US dollars. on ebay around 200 and sometimes less (i got mine for $92. butthe shipping to The Netherlands was also $60 so......) aad

Great hint AAD, thanks for the info, I will be sure to check this and other things out. The more I learn the more dangerous I become. So look out world, cause I am about to become a Holy Terror.  

Clean carbs, not too bad a job Got the carb's cleaned out last night. Now the engine is still only running on #2 and #3 cylinders. I found the mixture screws under the safey plugs and adjusted per the Wyzard's sugestion. Mine were at 1 3/4 out to begin with. Had some bad storms come through so I closed the shop with out further trouble shooting. I'll be back at it Saturday night to try and figure out why only 2 are firing.  

Found bad ign coil last night I finally got to do some troubleshooting last night. Did all the resistance and continuity checks i could find in the manual and it all came down to a bad coil for the 1 & 4 cylinders. I had no resistance between the secondary wires with the plug caps removed and there is supposed to be 300-400 ohms or close to that. Primary side was ok. As I was checking the secondary resistance and had nothing it slipped out of my hand and hit the shed floor, only then did i start to get something. So looks like something inside is loose or broken. I am shopping for a replacement now. More updastes to come. Kaw sure did hide that thing in a hard to get to spot though.  

Won't rev over 4K Any sugestions? Cleaned out carbs and got the engine running today and now it will not rev over 4K. Like it is running out of gas. The carbs are working fine ut I do not know where to go from here. Help please.  

Hey Guys, The project is finally completed. I am headed out Monday for it's maiden voyage. Found the problem in the carbs was stopped up pilot jets due to crap comming out of the fuel pump that came out of the fuel tank. Haven;t figured out how it got past the filter though so I added a secondary filter between the pump and the carbs. Thanks for all you help. See you on the road.

TV, I finally got the carbs straightened out. What i found was all 4 carbs had plugged up jets. After doing some research i found the high speed jets were supposed to have holes all the way through them. Mine were so plugged up it looked like they were supposed to be like that. After clearing the jets that thing ran like a rocket. I rode the bike for 5 or 6 K miles and even took a trip to El Paso, TX one week. You know, the Voyager must be half fish cause it rained on me for all three days on the way home and it never missed a lick. The Bridgestones stuck to the pavement like glue and the bike was very comfortable doing 70-75mph in the rain. One of the fella's at my church liked the bike so much he talked me into selling it to him. After the original purchase price, all the work and parts I put into the machine I about broke even. Had fun on the project and got a few good rides in too. I just bought my next touring machine, 1999 Harley Davidson Ultra Clasic FLTCUI. Another very nice ride and it is the bike I have always dreamed of owning. Good luck with your 96 and keep the ruber down and the shiny side up.
