Royal Caribbean cruise ships ranked by size from biggest to smallest — the complete list

Gene Sloan

Are you looking for the most activity-packed, megaresort-like Royal Caribbean cruise ships at sea? If so, you'll want to get on one of the biggest Royal Caribbean cruise ships.

The biggest Royal Caribbean cruise ships are, by nature, the Royal Caribbean ships with the most pools, waterslides and other deck-top activities, as well as the most onboard restaurants, bars and showrooms. They have the biggest casinos and spas among ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet as well as the most cabins and suites — and the most variation in cabin and suite types.

With room for 6,000 passengers or more, the biggest Royal Caribbean ships are truly massive resorts like you find at such landlocked destinations as Orlando and Las Vegas. If you're in the "bigger is better" camp when it comes to a resort experience, these are the Royal Caribbean ships for you.

Still, Royal Caribbean doesn't just operate massive vessels. The Miami-based cruise giant also operates quite a few relatively small cruise ships that carry just 2,000 or 3,000 people and have a much more intimate feel. In some cases, these vessels are just half or a third of the size of Royal Caribbean's biggest ships. These ships, notably, have far fewer deck-top activities and interior venues than the biggest Royal Caribbean cruise ships.

The smallest Royal Caribbean cruise ships are best for vacationers who like a more intimate, less crowded resort experience.

What is the biggest Royal Caribbean ship?

The biggest Royal Caribbean cruise ship is the just-unveiled Icon of the Seas . Measuring 250,800 gross tons, it's not only the biggest Royal Caribbean ship but also the biggest cruise ship ever built by any line. It's loaded with more bars, restaurants, theaters and deck-top attractions than you'll find on any other ship at sea.

Icon of the Seas is the first in a new series of ships at Royal Caribbean that are bigger than anything seen before. The series is called the Icon Class.

How big is Icon of the Seas?

At 250,800 gross tons, Icon of the Seas is more than 6% larger than Royal Caribbean's 1-year-old Wonder of the Seas , which previously was the biggest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet (and the biggest ship operated by any line). Icon of the Seas can carry up to 7,600 passengers — a new record for a passenger ship. That's about 7% higher than the maximum capacity of Wonder of the Seas, which can hold up to 7,084 passengers.

The bigger passenger capacity is partly due to the ship's greater focus on family travelers. Icon of the Seas was built with a lot more cabins that have plenty of extra bunks to accommodate families with many children. It also has more amenities geared toward families. This includes a new-for-the-line outdoor "neighborhood" called Surfside dedicated to families with young children.

What is the smallest Royal Caribbean ship?

The smallest Royal Caribbean cruise ship is Grandeur of the Seas. Measuring just 73,817 tons, it's just a third the size of Icon of the Seas.

Grandeur of the Seas dates to 1996, a time when cruise ships were built far smaller than they are today and with far fewer venues. At 27 years old, it's the oldest vessel in the Royal Caribbean fleet and probably will be phased out sometime in the next few years.

Except for a rock climbing wall, Grandeur of the Seas has none of the gee-whiz Royal Caribbean top-deck attractions found on newer Royal Caribbean vessels, such as skydiving simulators and giant water parks. For the most part, its top deck is lined with pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for ships built in the 1990s.

That said, Grandeur of the Seas has a loyal following among Royal Caribbean fans who prefer smaller and more intimate ships.

Are bigger Royal Caribbean ships coming?

Royal Caribbean currently has three new cruise ships on order, all of which will be among its biggest cruise ships ever — if not the biggest.

The first to arrive in July will be Utopia of the Seas , the sixth and final vessel in the line's iconic Oasis Class series. Launched in 2009 with the debut of Oasis of the Seas, the Oasis-class ships have dominated the world of mega-size cruise ships since that year. At the time the class began rolling out, the vessels were around 40% bigger than the next-biggest cruise ships, and they have continued to be the biggest and most amenity-laden ships in the world ever since.

Utopia of the Seas is expected to be roughly the same size as Wonder of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's second-biggest cruise ship. But it'll be smaller than the line's biggest ship, Icon of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean also has two more vessels similar to Icon of the Seas on order from shipyards for delivery in 2025 and 2026, respectively. Both ships are expected to be as big or bigger than Icon of the Seas.

What's the difference between bigger and smaller Royal Caribbean ships?

Royal Caribbean's biggest ships have room for many more onboard venues and attractions than Royal Caribbean's older ships. That makes them more alluring for vacationers who prefer a big, bustling megaresort experience to a stay at a smaller resort.

On Royal Caribbean's biggest Oasis-class vessels, for instance, you'll find three separate main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on their top decks. Inside the vessels, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine — plus huge casinos, spas and showrooms with Broadway-style shows. They even have indoor ice skating rinks.

The line's new Icon of the Seas has a similar array of amenities.

Royal Caribbean's smallest ships are a half to a third smaller than the Oasis Class and Icon Class vessels and lack many of the above features. They have a much more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold far fewer people. While Oasis Class and Icon Class ships can hold more than 5,400 passengers at double occupancy, the line's four oldest vessels (known as the Vision class) are only designed to carry about 2,000 passengers at double occupancy.

Royal Caribbean's smallest ships are a good choice for someone who wants to try Royal Caribbean but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The smallest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet thus appeal to a subset of Royal Caribbean fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive on a per-day basis for cruisers.

Additionally, because of their size, the smallest Royal Caribbean ships can operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Icon of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean Ships by Size [2023] with Comparison Chart

Royal Caribbean Ships by Size [2023] with Infographic

Below you'll find a complete list of Royal Caribbean Ships by Size . If it has an " of the Seas " in its name, then it's included in our ship sizes comparison chart. From the oldest Grandeur of the Seas to the newest planned, Utopia of the Seas (scheduled for 2024), you'll find the smallest to the largest Royal Caribbean ships here.

To give you an idea of just how far we've come, check out the bottom of the size comparison chart. Royal Caribbean's earliest ships held less than 3,000 people including guests and cruise staff. Compare that to the top where you'll see the planned Icon of the Seas with nearly 10,000 people roaming this massive ship. That's over 3x the size !

First, we have to get something clear. We're measuring Royal Caribbean ships by size according to the metric, "Gross Tonnage." This always causes a bit of confusion amongst our community members. It's not simply "weight" that determines this size measurement. The definition is technical and boring, but we'll provide it anyway.

We told you it was boring! So why do we use this measurement to determine Royal Caribbean Ships Sizes? As noted above, it's used for safety rules and whatnot. As such, it's prevalent. Every passenger cruise ship will have this metric . That makes it easy to compare ship size across ship, class, line and more. Speaking of "class," we also have a great post on Royal Caribbean Ships by Class . There you can find all of the fun features (like robot bartenders and surfing machines) that are included based on RC's ship classes.

Ok, we're done with today's maritime measurement course. Here's our Royal Caribbean Ships Sizes Chart. And below, you'll find all ships sizes with more details!

You can see the vast difference in ships sizes below comparing the smallest to largest! Here's a visual representation showing the Empress of the Seas to the Symphony of the Seas.

The experience on these two cruise ships will be drastically different!  It's like shopping at the corner store vs the "Mall of America." Different cruisers have varying preferences. Some of you prefer familiarity and intimacy. Others want novelty and don't mind walking long distances. There are no bad options here!

RC builds its ships in "classes." These are like small families containing similar ships in each group. If you find a specific type of ship that you like, consider the other ships in its family. Check out our post, Royal Caribbean Ships by Class . Now... back to sizing.

Not only is the Icon of the Seas the biggest of Royal Caribbean's fleet. It will also be the largest cruise ship in the world !

Often we're asked if size affects price. The cost of a Royal Caribbean cruise isn't directly correlated with size. You won't find that the bigger the ship, the more the cost. Nor will you find the opposite. You won't necessarily pay less for the largest RC ship vs the smallest. It will all depend on the specific itinerary. To get a sense of pricing, please use our widget below.

Royal Caribbean Ships: Sorted by Size with Comprehensive Comparison Chart

Emily Davis

Venturing on a Royal Caribbean cruise is a thrilling adventure, but with an expansive fleet, deciphering the size of each ship can be a daunting task.

Size matters, and for many cruisers, it’s a pivotal factor when selecting the perfect vessel. Royal Caribbean has long been synonymous with gigantic cruise ships, introducing the era of “mega ships” in the late 1980s.

The evolution hasn’t stopped, with each new ship class pushing the boundaries of size. While size isn’t the sole defining factor, it holds significant sway, particularly in the realm of marketing.

From the classic Grandeur of the Seas to the eagerly anticipated Utopia of the Seas set to debut in 2024, our journey through Royal Caribbean’s ship sizes spans from the smallest to the largest vessels in the fleet.

For a glimpse into the remarkable evolution, take a moment to explore the lower end of our size comparison chart. In the early days, Royal Caribbean’s inaugural ships accommodated fewer than 3,000 individuals, encompassing both guests and cruise staff.

Now, shift your gaze to the top, where the upcoming Icon of the Seas is poised to host nearly 10,000 passengers and crew—more than triple the size of those pioneering vessels!

Let’s clarify our yardstick for measuring Royal Caribbean ships: “Gross Tonnage.” While it might sound technical and tedious, this metric plays a crucial role in determining a ship’s overall internal volume.

It influences aspects like manning regulations, safety protocols, registration fees, and port dues. Though it may be a bit mundane, the choice of gross tonnage as our measuring stick offers a standardized and easily comparable basis across various ships, classes, and cruise lines.

As you set sail on the journey of choosing your next cruise, navigating through the sea of options becomes more accessible with a comparison of Royal Caribbean ships by size. From gross tonnage to maximum speed, cost, capacity, and length in feet, we’ve compiled a detailed list of the fleet’s dimensions.

In the vast expanse of Royal Caribbean’s fleet, each ship tells its own story through size and scale. Navigating these waters becomes a breeze when armed with insights into the sizes of these maritime marvels.

Whether you seek the grandeur of a larger-than-life vessel or the intimacy of a smaller cruise ship, understanding the dimensions adds a new layer to your cruise planning experience.

Are the bigger ships better than the smaller ships?

When it comes to deciding between Royal Caribbean ships, size does matter. While the larger ships may offer more amenities and activities, the smaller vessels can be just as exciting. Large and small ships offer an array of features that will keep guests entertained during their voyage, depending on what they are looking for in a cruise experience.

This ultimately comes down to personal preference and the cruise you are taking. For example, a family Caribbean cruise with kids will likely want a complete waterpark and many pools. At the same time, an adult-only cruise to Alaska might be more about the destination and less about the extensive ship amenities.

The measurement of Gross register tonnage  ( GRT ,  grt ,  g.r.t. ,  gt ) or  gross registered tonnage , is a ship’s total internal volume expressed in “register tons”, each of which is equal to 100 cubic feet (2.83 m 3 ). Replaced by  Gross Tonnage  (GT), gross register tonnage uses the total permanently enclosed capacity of the vessel as its basis for volume.

Royal Caribbean cruise ships ranked by size from biggest to smallest — the complete list

Are you looking for the most activity-packed, megaresort-like Royal Caribbean cruise ships at sea? If so, you’ll want to get on one of the biggest Royal Caribbean cruise ships.

If you’re in the “bigger is better” camp when it comes to a resort experience, these are the Royal Caribbean ships for you.

Still, Royal Caribbean doesn’t just operate massive vessels. The Miami-based cruise giant also operates quite a few relatively small cruise ships that carry just 2,000 or 3,000 people and have a much more intimate feel. In some cases, these vessels are just half or a third of the size of Royal Caribbean’s biggest ships.

Measuring 250,800 gross tons, it’s not only the biggest Royal Caribbean ship but also the biggest cruise ship ever built by any line. It’s loaded with more bars, restaurants, theaters and deck-top attractions than you’ll find on any other ship at sea.

Icon of the Seas is the first in a new series of ships at Royal Caribbean that are bigger than anything seen before. The series is called the Icon Class.

How big is Icon of the Seas?

At 250,800 gross tons, Icon of the Seas is more than 6% larger than Royal Caribbean’s 1-year-old Wonder of the Seas , which previously was the biggest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet (and the biggest ship operated by any line). Icon of the Seas can carry up to 7,600 passengers — a new record for a passenger ship. That’s about 7% higher than the maximum capacity of Wonder of the Seas, which can hold up to 7,084 passengers.

The bigger passenger capacity is partly due to the ship’s greater focus on family travelers. Icon of the Seas was built with a lot more cabins that have plenty of extra bunks to accommodate families with many children. It also has more amenities geared toward families. This includes a new-for-the-line outdoor “neighborhood” called Surfside dedicated to families with young children.

What is the smallest Royal Caribbean ship?

The smallest Royal Caribbean cruise ship is Grandeur of the Seas. Measuring just 73,817 tons, it’s just a third the size of Icon of the Seas.

Grandeur of the Seas dates to 1996, a time when cruise ships were built far smaller than they are today and with far fewer venues. At 27 years old, it’s the oldest vessel in the Royal Caribbean fleet and probably will be phased out sometime in the next few years.

The first to arrive in July will be Utopia of the Seas , the sixth and final vessel in the line’s iconic Oasis Class series.

Utopia of the Seas is expected to be roughly the same size as Wonder of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s second-biggest cruise ship. But it’ll be smaller than the line’s biggest ship, Icon of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean also has two more vessels similar to Icon of the Seas on order from shipyards for delivery in 2025 and 2026, respectively. Both ships are expected to be as big or bigger than Icon of the Seas.

What’s the difference between bigger and smaller Royal Caribbean ships?

Royal Caribbean’s biggest ships have room for many more onboard venues and attractions than Royal Caribbean’s older ships. That makes them more alluring for vacationers who prefer a big, bustling megaresort experience to a stay at a smaller resort.

On Royal Caribbean’s biggest Oasis-class vessels, for instance, you’ll find three separate main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that’s just on their top decks. Inside the vessels, you’ll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine — plus huge casinos, spas and showrooms with Broadway-style shows. They even have indoor ice skating rinks.

The line’s new Icon of the Seas has a similar array of amenities.

Related: The ultimate guide to Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean’s smallest ships are a half to a third smaller than the Oasis Class and Icon Class vessels and lack many of the above features. They have a much more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold far fewer people. While Oasis Class and Icon Class ships can hold more than 5,400 passengers at double occupancy, the line’s four oldest vessels (known as the Vision class) are only designed to carry about 2,000 passengers at double occupancy.

Royal Caribbean’s smallest ships are a good choice for someone who wants to try Royal Caribbean but isn’t eager to travel with huge crowds. The smallest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet thus appeal to a subset of Royal Caribbean fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don’t mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive on a per-day basis for cruisers.

Additionally, because of their size, the smallest Royal Caribbean ships can operate itineraries to places that aren’t as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Icon of the Seas.

List of Royal Caribbean Ships by Size

Below, I have put together a list of Royal Caribbean ships ranked by size, first by ‘gross tonnage’, then by length in feet.

Just to note, in lay terms, gross tonnage is a fancy way to quantify a ship’s total internal volume.

I have also included each ship’s total guest capacity, total staterooms and number of crew members.

The Biggest Royal Caribbean Ship: Icon of the Seas

Icon of the Seas is currently the largest Royal Caribbean ship but also the largest cruise ship ever built. With a gross tonnage of 250,800 and a length of 1,198 feet, this ship is in a class of its own. To put that in perspective, it’s taller than the Eiffel Tower, which is 900 feet tall.

It surpasses the previous record-holder, Wonder of the Seas, by more than 13,000 gross tonnes. The ship features 20 decks and can accommodate 7,600 guests. Additionally, it requires a crew of 2,350 to operate. If you’re considering your accommodation options, the ship offers 2,805 staterooms.

Although Harmony of the Seas was once the largest ship (beating Wonder of the Seas by a few inches), it’s worth noting that Icon of the Seas exceeds it by 10 feet. Future ships in the Icon class are expected, but for now, Icon of the Seas reigns in size and choice of amenities.

Learn about the unique features of  Royal Caribbean’s largest ships .

A vibrant scene atop the Icon of the Seas cruise ship, featuring a bustling water park with colorful slides, a wave pool, and sunbathers enjoying the deck with the ocean in the background.

The Smallest Royal Caribbean Ship: Grandeur of the Seas

The smallest Royal Caribbean ship is Grandeur of the Seas . Built back in 1996, her stats might not be record-breaking, but she still appeals to many cruisers with a gross tonnage of 73,817 and stretching 916 feet from bow to stern.

Part of the Vision Class, the Grandeur of the Seas offers a cruising experience that’s less about overwhelming options and more about ease and familiarity. You’re looking at a guest capacity of 1,992 passengers, complemented by a crew of 760.

What the Grandeur of the Seas lacks in size, she more than makes up for in character. Boasting 996 staterooms and various amenities, the ship provides everything you need for a fulfilling holiday at sea. So, if the hustle and bustle of the bigger ships isn’t your cup of tea, this might just be your perfect match.

For a comparison of sizes and amenities, see  Royal Caribbean Ships by Size and Age .

The Size of Each Royal Caribbean Class

Next, diving into the various classes of Royal Caribbean ships, there are eight in total, each with unique features. The classes often consist of sister ships, which are quite similar in design, albeit with differences in on-board amenities. That’s one reason you might find variations in size, even among ships of the same class.

But to give you a clearer picture, I’ve crunched the numbers and calculated the average gross tonnage for each class. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Icon Class : 250,800
  • Oasis Class : 228,000
  • Quantum : 169,000
  • Quantum Ultra Class : 169,000
  • Freedom Class : 154,000
  • Voyager Class : 138,000
  • Radiance Class : 90,000
  • Vision Class : 78,000

These numbers give you a good idea of what to expect size-wise when choosing between the different classes. So, whether you’re after the largest ship or something a bit more intimate, Royal Caribbean has something for everyone.

The Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas cruise ship captured at sunset, its silhouette highlighted against a sky of soft pastel hues, reflecting on the calm sea waters.

Are Bigger Royal Caribbean Ships Necessarily Better?

After taking a dive into the details and doing the maths, I’ve made a table to help answer this question. I’ve worked out two things for each ship: firstly, how much space there is for each guest (space ratio – the higher number, the better). I’ve ordered the by table by this.

Secondly, I added a column on how many crew members there are to look after you (Passenger-to-Crew Ratio – the lower the number, the better). This should give you a better idea of what to expect on your cruise.

From this, here are a few things I noticed from the table:

  • More Space on Smaller Ships : Some smaller ships, like those in the Radiance class, seem to give you more personal space. So, if you hate feeling cramped, a smaller ship might be a good option.
  • Bigger Ships, More People, Less Staff : On large ships like Icon and Oasis classes, each crew member has to look after more guests. This could mean you’ll wait a bit longer for that cocktail or dinner table. But remember, the bigger ships have lots more options for things to do: more pools, restaurants, and entertainment options.
  • Best of Both Worlds : Some ships, like those in the Quantum and Freedom classes, are in the middle ground. They offer a good amount of personal space and a reasonable number of people per crew member.

So, what’s the takeaway? There isn’t a massive difference in the amount of space for each passenger and how many staff there are per person.

However, bigger isn’t necessarily better; it just depends on what you want . If it’s personal service and more space, you might appreciate a smaller ship. If it’s endless activities and amenities, a bigger ship might suit you better.

The Oasis of the Seas towers over smaller cruise ships in a bustling harbor, illustrating the scale and grandeur of Royal Caribbean's flagship vessel against a vivid blue seascape.

Wrapping It Up

Choosing the right Royal Caribbean ship for your holiday isn’t just a matter of picking the largest ship in the fleet, although, if that’s what floats your boat (pun intended), why not go all out with Icon of the Seas? The key takeaway is that each ship offers a unique cruising experience, influenced by its size, amenities, and passenger-to-crew ratio.

For those who want a ship with plenty of activities, the bigger ships like those in the Icon and Oasis classes might be your ideal match. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a more intimate, laid-back holiday with top-notch personal service, you may find yourself drawn to the smaller ships in the Radiance or Vision classes.

However, remember that ships that fall in the middle of the size spectrum, like Quantum and Freedom classes, offer a balanced experience that can give you the best of both worlds.

In the end, whether you’re sailing solo, with a partner, or with the whole family, there’s a Royal Caribbean ship that’s just the right size for your perfect holiday at sea.

Will Royal Caribbean have Larger Ships in the Future?

Royal Caribbean plans to introduce three huge new cruise ships, which has made the maritime industry very excited. These ships will be very big and luxurious, and they will change the cruising experience a lot.

Some ships are currently being built in shipyards and others have secured agreements for construction.

In 2024, the sixth ship in the Oasis-class series, Utopia of the Seas, will be launched. It is anticipated to be comparable in size to Wonder of the Seas. But the largest ships will be the Icon of the Seas and her new class of ships, as two more Icon-class vessels are currently being built.

The following is the info related to the upcoming Royal Caribbean Ships.

FAQs – Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships by Size

Which royal caribbean ship is the largest  .

The biggest Royal Caribbean ship is the Icon of the Seas . It is the largest cruise ship in the world, with a weight of 250,800 GT and a length of 1,198 feet . It can hold up to 7,600 guests and 2,350 crew members.

What is the smallest Royal Caribbean Ship?

Royal Caribbean’s smallest active cruise ship is the Grandeur of the Seas . It has a gross tonnage of 73,817 GT and is 916 feet long. It can accommodate 1,992 passengers. It has 996 staterooms. It is also the oldest ship in the fleet.

Is Symphony of the Seas bigger than Oasis of the Seas?

Yes, Symphony of the Seas is physically bigger than Oasis of the Seas . With a length o f 361m, Symphony of the Seas is one meter longer and has a volume that is 1,200 tonnes larger. But Oasis of the Seas can accommodate nearly 100 more passengers at its maximum capacity.

What’s the Difference Between Large and Small Royal Caribbean ships?

The key difference between Royal Caribbean’s large and small ships lies in the abundance of onboard venues and attractions. The biggest Royal Caribbean Ships have lots of places to eat, have fun, and do activities for different interests. They have room for many special restaurants, cool bars, big shopping areas, and high-tech entertainment places.  Larger ships offer more activities like zip lines, aqua parks, escape rooms, and Broadway-style shows. These options attract passengers who want constant excitement and lots of chances for adventure on their cruise.   The focus is on making a lively and engaging atmosphere, which makes the biggest Royal Caribbean ships different from the smaller ones. This gives guests unmatched choices and variety during their trip.

Does Royal Caribbean Ship Sizes impact cruise price?

People often wonder if the size of a Royal Caribbean cruise ship affects the price. The cost of the cruise is not directly linked to the size of the ship. Bigger ships don’t always cost more, and smaller ships aren’t always cheaper. The specific itinerary is what determines the cost, not the size of the ship.

Cruising For All

Royal Caribbean Ships By Size, Largest To Smallest (2024)

If you’re considering booking a  family cruise vacation on Royal Caribbean,  you will have many questions that need answering. Booking a cruise is a significant expense and one you want to get right to keep the whole family happy. A huge factor for families is the ship size and facilities on a cruise ship. Thus we thought it would help to organise the  Royal Caribbean Ships By Size  from biggest to smallest. To help cruisers decide if this is the cruise line for you.

Why is it useful? Usually, the rule of thumb is the larger the ships, the more facilities there are onboard. Also, the  newer Royal Caribbean ships  generally get larger too! However, this also means there are more people on board cruising too.

We have never experienced overcrowding; the larger ships have many areas for people to filter to at any given moment. However, the larger the ship, the better the flow of people is managed around the ship. Check out our  Wonder Of The Seas Guide  if new ships are your thing .

Royal Caribbean Ships by Size, Age and Class (2022)

Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas

Royal Caribbean has an active fleet of 26 ships currently. They plan to launch a further 4 more ships between 2022 and 2026 ( Icon on of the Seas , Utopia of the Seas and two unnamed currently) which will bring them to 30 ships and keep their position as the largest cruise line fleet in the world.

Introduction to Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is an American cruise line headquartered in Miami, Florida. It was founded in 1968 in Norway by three Norwegian shipping companies and the first ship to sail for the company was Song of Norway in 1970.

Later on, the company merged with the greek cruise line Celebrity Cruises but kept the brand alive whilst also running Royal Caribbean. A further acquisition in 2018 of Silversea Cruises added another brand to the company, aimed at luxury cruise travellers.

Royal Caribbean is seen as one of the most innovative cruise lines in the world with many ‘firsts’ at sea (surfing, rock climbing, aqua theatre, world’s biggest ship and more) – they are very popular for all age groups and cater massively for families.

Their fleet of ships sails from dedicated ports around the world year-round and additionally they own two private islands which are visited by most of their Florida-based cruise ships.

This guide will help you work out which Royal Caribbean ship is which!

Royal Caribbean Ships Frequently Asked Questions

How many Royal Caribbean ships are there?

There are currently 26 ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet. With a further 4 ships on order.

Which Royal Caribbean ship is the most fun?

That would depend on your definition of fun! However, the Oasis-class ships offer the most facilities at sea because they are bigger and have more activities on them.

What is the smallest Royal Caribbean ship?

Grandeur of the Seas is the smallest Royal Caribbean ship in the fleet.

What is the oldest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet?

The oldest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet is Grandeur of the Seas which launched back in 1996.

What is the biggest cruise ship in the world?

Wonder of the Seas is currently the world’s biggest cruise ship at 236,857 GRT.

Is the Titanic bigger than a cruise ship?

No! Titanic is relatively small in comparison to modern cruise ships. Titanic was only 269m long compared to Wonder of the Seas at 362m long. Titanic was 46,328 GRT compared to Wonder of the Seas with 236,857 GRT!

Royal Caribbean Ships by Size (from largest to smallest)

What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.

GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.

How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.

Royal Caribbean Ships by Age (from newest to oldest)

Are all royal caribbean ships new builds.

Yes, all ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet have been built specifically for them. Some of their ships have at times been earmarked for transfer to other brands ( Grandeur of the Seas was due to move to Pullmantur, but was cancelled)

Royal Caribbean Ships by Class (from newest to oldest)

What is the difference between the oasis-class ships.

There are currently five Oasis-class ships and the sixth one is on order ( Utopia of the Seas ) – there are differences between each ship, although structurally they are all the same class of ship.

The first two ships are near-enough identical sisters, however, Harmony of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas both added the Ultimate Abyss – the world’s longest slide at sea.

The fifth ship, Wonder of the Seas added an eighth neighborhood ‘Suite Neighborhood’, a new restaurant ‘The Mason Jar’ and a new bar ‘ Vue’.

Final Thoughts

Royal Caribbean makes it easy for choosing a cruise ship to sail on – they have ships of varying different sizes and capacities – allowing them to sail from multiple ports around the world year-round.

Whilst their most-popular cruises leave from Miami, allowing calls at their private islands, many people enjoy Royal Caribbean sailing in Europe (to the Canaries and the Norwegian Fjords) and also in Asia, where Royal Caribbean has experimented with homeporting ships for the Chinese market in the past.

Oasis-class ships still get the most reviews (they of course also take the most passengers) but also because of more facilities and thus activities onboard.

That said, the Quantum-class ships are extremely popular with many delighted by the ‘ North Star ‘ attraction on the top of each Quantum-class ship.

Royal Caribbean Ships By Size And Weight (Is BIGGER Better?)

Stepping aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship feels like entering a floating realm where architectural marvel meets oceanic vastness. As you gaze upon the fleet, it’s evident that size isn’t just a measurement—it’s an experience.

Royal Caribbean keeps beating itself with their ginormous cruise ships. In fact, the newest ones are three times as large as the smallest in the fleet.

Some people prefer smaller, cozier ships, while others want all the bells and whistles.

Whatever your preference is, we have compiled a list of all of Royal Caribbean ships by size, so you can make an informed decision during your next vacation…

Table of Contents

Royal Caribbean Ships By Size

Royal caribbean ship sizes overview.

When you think of a Royal Caribbean cruise, you likely imagine a massive ship with incredible features and amenities. This isn’t far from the truth.

However, Royal Caribbean ships vary in size, giving you a lot of options to match your preferences.

Take Wonder of the Seas , for example. It’s the largest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet, with a capacity of 6,988 passengers and a size of 236,857 gross tons.

On the other hand, there’s the Symphony of the Seas , still massive but slightly smaller, with a 228,081 gross tonnage and room for 6,680 passengers. These two ships showcase the range of sizes and options available within the Royal Caribbean fleet.

You’ll also find ships like Spectrum of the Seas boasting impressive features. With a guest capacity of 5,622, this vessel offers a wealth of entertainment options, including Broadway-style performances, a sports bar and arcade, Casino Royale , the FlowRider® Surf Simulator, and more.

To break down these terms, and get a better understanding of Royal Caribbean ship sizes, it’s helpful to understand what exactly gross tonnage means:

Gross tonnage refers to the total volume of the ship’s interior—from the hull to the decks—while passenger capacity denotes the maximum number of guests the ship can accommodate.

You might wonder about the size difference between the oldest and newest Royal Caribbean ships. The majestic Grandeur of the Seas is the fleet’s oldest member, while the Utopia of the Seas , scheduled for 2024, will be Royal Caribbean’s newest addition.

As the fleet expands and evolves, each new ship offers an increasingly sophisticated blend of size and features for your cruising pleasure.

Choosing a cruise is all about finding the ship that suits your style and preferences. Whether you opt for the colossal Wonder of the Seas or a smaller, more intimate vessel, you’re bound to have a remarkable adventure.

What is the Largest Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship?

Royal caribbean's Icon Of the Sea

The title of the largest Royal Caribbean cruise ship goes to the ‘ Icon of the Seas ‘. Towering at 1,198 feet in length and boasting 20 expansive decks , this magnificent vessel can accommodate up to 7,600 guests, complemented by a crew of 2,350.

While the ‘Wonder of the Seas’ previously caught attention for its size, it was actually the ‘ Harmony of the Seas ‘ that narrowly held the record before.

However, the ‘Icon of the Seas’ surpasses the ‘Harmony’ by an extra 10 feet, firmly establishing it as the current behemoth of the cruising world.

Nonetheless, it’s worth mentioning that more ships, similar in grandeur to the ‘Icon’, are in Royal Caribbean’s future plans, suggesting this record might be challenged soon.

Which Are Better, Bigger Or Smaller Royal Caribbean Ships?

Nassau Bahamas - September 15, 2021: The Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship Freedom of the Seas in Nassau, Bahamas

So, big ship or small ship? It’s like comparing a bustling city’s heartbeat to the quaint charm of a small town. Both have their own magic, and it very much depends on your personal style.

Bigger ships pack in the features. With more space, they offer a wider variety of dining options, entertainment, and activities.

You’ll find multiple FlowRiders, ziplines, escape rooms, and water slides on these vessels.

For families with infants, a notable advantage of larger ships is the presence of dedicated baby splash zones since babies aren’t allowed in the main pools.

On the other hand, smaller ships offer a different kind of appeal. They present a more intimate atmosphere, making it easier for guests to familiarize themselves with the ship’s layout and crew. The experience feels more personalized and less overwhelming.

A significant advantage of smaller ships is their ability to dock at a wider range of ports, giving you access to more unique destinations that larger vessels can’t reach.

If you want a lot of amenities and activities, go BIG. If you’re looking for a quieter, more personalized cruise with diverse port options, consider the smaller ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet.

Key Measurements and Capacities

The people sitting at show at Aqua Theater amphitheater at cruise liner Oasis of the Seas by Royal Caribbean docked in Cape Canaveral

Gross Tonnage

When considering the size of a cruise ship, one valuable measurement to consider is gross tonnage (GT).

Gross tonnage is a unit of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship.

In practical terms, the higher the gross tonnage, the more space the ship has for passengers, amenities, and cargo.

Royal Caribbean’s largest ship in terms of gross tonnage is Wonder of the Seas, which boasts an impressive 235,600 GT.

Icon of the Seas is also a standout, with over 13,000 more gross tonnes than Wonder of the Seas, making it significantly larger.

Guest Capacity

Another important factor to consider is the guest capacity of each ship. The higher the guest capacity, the more people can enjoy the luxuries and amenities aboard.

Symphony of the Seas, which is one of Royal Caribbean’s largest, can accommodate 5,518 passengers.

Wonder of the Seas has surpassed this number, having a passenger capacity of 5,734, offering a more spacious and comfortable experience for its guests.

The length of a ship is an essential measurement to take into account, as it can directly impact the ease of maneuverability and docking capabilities.

Icon of the Seas holds the title for the longest ship in the world, measuring around 10 feet longer than Wonder of the Seas.

These ships’ remarkable lengths enable them to offer more amenities and activities onboard, ensuring a unique experience for all passengers.

The beam of a ship refers to the width of the vessel at its widest point. A wider beam can translate into greater stability and comfort for passengers, as well as improved cargo and storage capacities.

When considering Royal Caribbean’s ships, it’s crucial to remember that wider vessels often provide additional space for activities, dining venues, and various forms of entertainment.

The number of decks on a cruise ship can have a significant impact on the experience for passengers. Decks often house various amenities, including guestrooms, dining venues, activity centers, and more.

For example, Symphony of the Seas has 20 decks, providing ample space for guests and crew to enjoy all the ship has to offer.

As you explore Royal Caribbean’s fleet, pay attention to the number of decks, as it can directly impact the variety and quality of experiences you may enjoy onboard.

Amenities by Ship Size

As you know, Royal Caribbean cruise ships come in various sizes, and along with their size, there’s a difference in the amenities they offer.

On the larger ships, like the Wonder of the Seas, with its massive 236,857 gross tons and capacity for 6,988 guests, you can truly expect a Las Vegas-style megaresort experience. Onboard, you’ll find various activities and recreational facilities, such as:

  • Ice-skating rinks
  • Water slides
  • Multiple pools
  • FlowRiders for surfing
  • Exclusive retreats like the adults-only Solarium

In addition, Royal Caribbean’s enormous ships have an extensive array of dining venues, ranging from fine dining to more casual options.

Not to mention, Broadway-style performances, live music, and comedy shows can be enjoyed in state-of-the-art theaters.

Moving on to the smaller Royal Caribbean ships, like the Grandeur of the Seas, which measures approximately 73,817 gross tons and can accommodate around 2,440 passengers, the overall feel is more intimate and cozy.

While you may not find the same scale of amenities as on the larger ships, the smaller vessels still provide a fantastic range of options for you to enjoy:

  • Pools and hot tubs
  • Fitness centers
  • A spa for pampering yourself
  • Multiple restaurants and bars
  • Nightclubs and lounges

These smaller ships also offer a more personalized experience, with staff members that can cater to your every need.

The entertainment on these ships tends to be more laid-back, with live music, piano bars, and stand-up comedy.

It’s worth noting that regardless of ship size, one thing you can always count on is Royal Caribbean’s exceptional service and commitment to providing you with a memorable vacation.

From the moment you step on board, you’ll be surrounded by friendly staff eager to assist you in any way possible.

The amenities offered by Royal Caribbean ships are influenced by their size. Larger, newer ships boast a more extensive range of activities and entertainment options, while smaller ships offer a more intimate experience.

Ship Size Evolution

You’ll notice Royal Caribbean cruise ship sizes have evolved over time.

In the early days, the ships were smaller, designed for more intimate experiences. However, as customer demands and technology advanced, the cruise line responded with larger, more innovative ships to appeal to a broader range of passengers.

In the mid-1990s, Royal Caribbean introduced the Vision-class ships, such as Grandeur of the Seas, which had a gross tonnage of 73,817. These vessels offered more amenities and space for guests, with a capacity of around 2,440 passengers.

As the years progressed, the company continued to build larger ships, leading to the Voyager, Radiance, and ultimately the Freedom-class ships.

The Freedom-class ships, like the Freedom of the Seas, took passenger capacity to a new level. With a gross tonnage of 154,407, these ships could accommodate over 4,5150 guests and offered an impressive array of amenities, including surf simulators, ice-skating rinks, and outdoor movie screens.

But the evolution didn’t stop there. In 2009, Royal Caribbean debuted the Oasis-class ships, which truly redefined modern cruising.

These gargantuan ships, such as the Symphony of the Seas, boast a gross tonnage of 228,081 and have the capacity to host approximately 6,680 passengers. They also introduced innovative features like neighborhoods, aquatic theaters, and zip-lines.

Today, the upcoming Icon-class ships, planned for launch between 2022 and 2026, foreshadow an even more exciting era of cruising.

With cutting-edge technology, these highly anticipated ships are expected to push the boundaries even further in terms of size, capacity, and experiences available for guests.

Future of Royal Caribbean Ship Sizes

Philipsburg, St. Maarten - Jan. 16, 2013: Cruise ships docked at Dr. A. C. Wathey Pier on the Dutch side of St. Maarten. Passengers wanting to go to town are tendered to the smaller Captain Hodge Pier in Philipsburg.

If you follow the growth of the Royal Caribbean cruise line, you’ll notice their ship sizes increasing over time. In the upcoming years, some exciting additions are coming to their fleet of vessels.

Specifically, the awaited arrival of the Icon Class in 2023 is sure to impress you.

The most notable ship coming soon to Royal Caribbean’s fleet is the Icon of the Seas . Though exact details are still scarce, it is expected to be a substantial step forward in terms of both size and innovation.

The anticipation is building, and you will likely hear a lot more about this new class of ship in 2022.

Besides the giant Icon of the Seas, other planned launches include Utopia of the Seas, scheduled for 2024, as well as two more unnamed ships.

By the time this expansion is completed, Royal Caribbean will boast 30 ships in their lineup, solidifying their status as the largest cruise line fleet in the world.

You’ll find it interesting to compare the future ships to the company’s older vessels. One of Royal Caribbean’s first ships, the Grandeur of the Seas, is significantly smaller than the latest mammoths.

This growing diversity in ship sizes ensures you can find an experience tailored to your preferences, whether you enjoy a more intimate setting or the grandiosity of a larger vessel.

As Royal Caribbean continues to innovate and expand, expect more groundbreaking and sizeable ships to join their fleet.

Stay tuned, because the future of ship sizes in the Royal Caribbean fleet promises to keep on impressing and evolving.

If you’re in the “bigger is better” camp when it comes to a resort experience, these are the Royal Caribbean ships for you.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

The first to arrive in July will be Utopia of the Seas , the sixth and final vessel in the line’s iconic Oasis Class series.

There’s a clear trend in cruise ship design that “bigger is better”, with ships like Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas setting new passenger records and redefining the idea of a cruise vacation.

Major cruise lines are also competing with each other by introducing innovative activities and features to the high seas.

From racing around multi-level karting courses to taking your pick of the latest blockbusters inside multiscreen movie theaters, these are some of the most impressive activities available on cruise ships right now.

Karting on ships has been around for a while, but the latest ‘Prima class’ of cruise ships introduced by Norwegian Cruise Line takes things up a notch.

Go-karting track on the Norwegian Prima cruise ship.

The track on the Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva now spans three levels, offering guests a longer, more intense karting experience than on the line’s older ships.

Described as “a perfect way to spend a day at sea” by CN Traveler’s Meena Thiruvengadam , the 1,400-foot track hosts various competitions throughout a cruise, with a podium to reward winners and a fastest lap scoreboard continually updated.

The activity isn’t included in the cruise fare. Typically, $15 buys you entry into a race. For additional fees, it’s possible to rent the track for yourself in order to drive faster, or even buy a pass for unlimited use of the track.

Royal Caribbean's ‘Quantum class’ and some of its ‘Oasis class’ ships feature robotic bartenders. These robots mix themed drinks like the signature Bionic Tea.

While an innovative feature and a fun experience as a one-off, the bars aren't necessarily somewhere you’ll want to hang around for hours.

    Moving Bars

Found on Royal Caribbean’s biggest cruise ships, the Rising Tide Bar provides guests the opportunity to enjoy their preferred drinks while moving vertically between the ship's decks.

Magic Carpet is an orange glass-sheltered platform suspended from the starboard side of the cruise ... [+] ship Celebrity Edge.

But moving bars aren't restricted to inside a cruise ship. Each of Celebrity’s newest ‘Edge class’ vessels are equipped with the Magic Carpet .

This orange exterior apparatus can move up and down the starboard side of the ship, serving various functions throughout the cruise. It’s used as a tender platform, but most notably it turns into an open-air dining venue and bar, accompanied by spectacular views and an ocean breeze.

Zip lines on cruise ships offer an exhilarating adventure on board, allowing passengers to soar across the deck and take in stunning ocean views, if they can keep their eyes open!

Found mainly on modern, larger vessels, these attractions can stretch over 600 feet in length. Although not widespread, Royal Caribbean's ‘Oasis class’ ships, together with some ships from MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line feature zip lines.

    Rollercoasters

Another option to feel the sea breeze while enjoying an exhilarating experience can be found on Carnival’s ‘Bolt’, the world’s first rollercoaster at sea.

Three ships operated by Carnival Cruise Line feature a rollercoaster known as 'Bolt'.

Capable of reaching speeds of up to 40 mph, the attraction is available on Carnival’s Mardi Gras , Celebration and Jubilee ships.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Disney Cruise Line also features theme park style attractions on some of its ships. Guests in the two-person rafts on the serpentine water coaster ‘Aqua Duck’ reach speeds of up to 14 mph.

    Planetariums

A facility designed to simulate the night sky for educational and entertainment purposes, a planetarium is an immersive environment that allows people to explore the universe from the comfort of their seats.

While lacking the adrenaline-fueled fun of zip-lines or karting, planetariums are nevertheless an exciting feature on a handful of cruise ships. Cunard’s ocean liner Queen Mary 2 and Viking Orion are among the few ships with this intriguing feature.

    Multiscreen Cinemas

Princess Cruises was the first cruise line to introduce giant outdoor movie screens, but other lines are now pushing hard into the world of the silver screen.

The foyer of the multiscreen cinema onboard P&O cruise ship 'Arvia'.

Carnival was the first—and still only—cruise line to offer a full IMAX experience at sea. If choice matters more, P&O Arvia features a three-screen cinema showing multiple different pictures throughout the day.

    Skydiving Simulators

The ‘Quantum class’ ships in Royal Carribean's fleet feature Ripcord by iFLY , a skydiving simulator that offers guests the opportunity to experience the thrill of skydiving including the feel of weightlessness in a safe environment.

Although a pricey activity, the cruise line does usually release a limited number of complimentary spaces, allowing everyone the chance to try it out if you’re flexible on time.

    Surfing Simulators

On a Royal Caribbean cruise, adventure-seekers can surf the waves without setting foot off the ship.

The FlowRider surfing simulator is a signature feature of Royal Caribbean cruise ships.

Whether you're just starting out or you've surfed before, you can dive into the fun with either boogie boarding or standup surfing on one of the 19 FlowRider surf simulators spread across the fleet.

Arcades on cruise ships are nothing new, but in recent years new virtual reality technology has transformed these spaces into immersive VR arcades, elevating the gaming experience to a new level.

These cutting-edge attractions blend the nostalgic charm of traditional arcades with the thrilling experiences of virtual reality. However, be aware that the experiences might trigger seasickness in susceptible cruisers.

The father of the 20-year-old passenger who jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship last Thursday in a reportedly drunken, impulsive leap believes his son is still alive nearly a week later.

Francel Parker, dad of missing Levion Parker, told the Daily Sun that he believes his child — whom he called a master diver — is still alive in the waters off the Bahamas.

“As soon as he went off the side, I prayed over him. I was confident the prayers I said over my son were heard. I stand on the word of God. I believe he is alive,” Francel Parker said to the local Florida paper Wednesday.

Levion Parker was ID'd as the 20 year old who jumped to his death from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

The US Coast Guard called off its search for the North Port man a day earlier.

The younger Parker allegedly jumped off the 18-story Liberty of the Seas around 4 a.m. in front of his helpless dad and younger brother after getting into an argument with his father, witnesses previously told The Post.

But Francel, who runs an AC business in Port Charlotte, told the local newspaper that he wasn’t arguing with Levion and that his son wasn’t trying to take his own life.

He said Levion is a skilled diver who works on a commercial fishing boat, and he is demanding to know how his underage son was given alcohol on the four-day cruise to Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island.

“We don’t drink,” Francel said. “I’d like to know how my son was served so much alcohol.”

Levion Parker is shown pictured with his family.

Another passenger onboard the cruise who witnessed Levion’s heart-stopping jump said Francel was “fussing at him for being drunk.”

Bryan Sims told The Post that he was hanging out with Levion and his 18-year-old brother, Seth, in the hotel tub of the ship in the early hours of April 4 before they went their separate ways.

After Sims had used the restroom and dried off, he bumped into the brothers and their father near the elevators.

Levion Parker's dad claims his son is still alive, adding that he's a skilled diver who works on a commercial fishing boat.

“As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess,” Sims said of the moment before Parker jumped.

“When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all,” Sims said, calling what he witnessed “surreal.”

Another cruise guest described the frantic chaos that followed.

“There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” Deborah Morrison told The Post.

A witness claimed to have saw the father become growingly upset about Levion being too drunk while on the cruise.

“His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”

Francel told the Daily Sun that he threw six life rings off the ship in hopes of saving his son before the massive vessel was able to come to a stop about 20 minutes later.

Royal Caribbean said it “immediately” launched search boats to look for the 20-year-old and alerted the Coast Guard, which later took over the search.

Royal Caribbean said it called for search boats to look for Levion Parker alerted the Coast Guard.

At least 406 people on major cruise lines and ferries have gone overboard between 2000 and 2024, according to data collected by retired professor and cruise industry researcher Ross Klein.

Death rates among overboard passengers and crew members vary significantly among cruise lines, but even the safest cruise companies were only able to rescue about 40% of people who fall or jump off the ship, Klein told the Washington Post in July.

The 6 best Royal Caribbean ships for adults

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Royal Caribbean is known for some of the world’s largest cruise ships , over-the-top onboard amenities and some of the best entertainment at sea — perfect for young families. While Royal Caribbean does not run adults-only cruises, grownups traveling without children will be glad to know that certain ships seem tailor-made for couples, mom-and-daughter duos or parents traveling with their adult children.

With over 25 ships in its fleet, Royal Caribbean has a ship for every type of traveler, not just families with young kids. Whether you’re looking for fewer upper-deck attractions and more places to relax outside or upscale dining and entertainment for a date night after an exciting day in port, this cruise line has you covered.

Also, most ships offer adults-only pools and lounges where you can escape from the younger cruisers on board if you so choose. Cruisers looking for a party scene can enjoy nightclubs open until the wee hours of the morning, and foodies can find an elevated dining experience at the line’s many specialty restaurants.

For the avid traveler looking to get away from the standard Caribbean sailings, some of the line’s ships have sailings that go to unique ports of call where you can immerse yourself in a new culture and indulge in local culinary delights.

If you’re looking for a more grownup vacation, these are the six best Royal Caribbean cruise ships for adults.

    Rhapsody of the Seas

Don’t overlook Rhapsody of the Seas just because it’s one of the oldest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet. It still has lots to offer adults looking for a fun getaway, especially to Europe, where you can book back-to-back port-intensive cruises for a customized vacation.

Rhapsody of the Seas offers some unique sailings, including a two-night sailing from Israel that can be tacked onto longer Mediterranean sailings, such as five-night Greek Isles cruises . For an even longer sailing, consider the 14-night transatlantic cruise , which stops in Alicante, Spain, the Canary Islands and the Bahamas.

The ship is also one of Royal Caribbean’s smallest, carrying 1,998 passengers at double occupancy (compared to 5,734 on Wonder of the Seas ). Yet it’s got much to offer adults looking to relax after a long day of sightseeing. Book a relaxing treatment, such as a couples massage or solo facial, in the serene oasis of the Vitality Spa. Or take a dip in the Solarium, the adults-only retreat with loungers, pools and panoramic ocean views.

In the evening, watch the sunset at the ship’s signature Viking Crown Lounge, where floor-to-ceiling windows surround clusters of cozy lounge chairs just beckoning adults to linger over their favorite drink and enjoy the view. After dark, the lounge becomes a dance club with a DJ.

Grownups can also enjoy evening dance parties and movies under the stars on the pool deck as the ship sails to its next port of call. Chops Grille, the onboard steakhouse, provides an intimate setting for a romantic dinner for two.

    Anthem of the Seas

Adults looking for unique onboard activities, mixed with a manageable size and more grownup vibe, will enjoy the 4,180-passenger Anthem of the Seas .

On board, the North Star, a pod-like viewing deck unique to this class of ships, suspends travelers 300 feet above the ocean for incredible views. We recommend taking the ride on a port day to get a birds-eye view of the shore and city skylines. For a different kind of thrill, try the RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator, which gives you the sensation of free falling.

Of course, no cruise is complete without dinner and a show. One of the more unique things about Anthem of the Seas is its four smaller main dining rooms rather than one enormous main restaurant. Of the four venues, The Grande is the most elegant and tends to draw in more adults. After dinner, head to the theater to see “We Will Rock You,” a musical tribute to Queen that originated in London’s West End. Anthem is the only Royal Caribbean ship to offer this production.

The ship also caters to adults with the time and desire for longer vacations, with seven- to 14-night summer cruises to the Norwegian fjords, Canary Islands and the Mediterranean. If you want to stay stateside, there are seven and eight-night sailings that go from Cape Liberty to Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay . You can find a more grownup vibe at the Chill Island beach or the swim-up bar in the Oasis Lagoon pool. The line has hinted that an adults-only beach is coming soon.

    Quantum of the Seas

The longer the cruise, the fewer the kids. So, for a very adult Royal Caribbean cruise, choose the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas for its longer sailings to Hawaii , the South Pacific or Australia . You’ll visit some of the most beautiful islands in the world and find far fewer kids on board due to the duration and school-year timing of the itineraries.

For an adult-focused cruise to Alaska , try Quantum’s weeklong voyages to the Last Frontier from May through September. The ship sails to such exciting ports of call as Skagway, Sitka and Ketchikan and offers scenic cruising through the Endicott Arm and by Dawes Glacier.

You’ll find plenty of kids on board during Alaska sailings. However, adults rarely have to go far to find a place without kids. (Plus, the ship’s excellent kids club keeps many young cruisers entertained and out of sight.)

Adults can seek out age-appropriate fun at the onboard escape room, watch an outdoor movie under the stars or embrace their inner child by shooting hoops or driving bumper cars at the SeaPlex. By day, enjoy a drink or snack and take in the 270-degree views in the Two70 lounge. Return at night when the space transforms into an immersive theater using high-tech elements to put on musical performances.

If you’re looking for great views from the pool or hot tub, head to the indoor, adults-only Solarium, where you never have to worry about the cold Alaska weather or the hot Hawaiian sun making you uncomfortable. The forward-facing venue offers unobstructed views from the plentiful lounge chairs around the windows.

Quantum of the Seas, like sister ship Anthem, has a multitude of dining venues that serve great dishes around the ship. A meal at Wonderland is worth the additional cost because it’s as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the taste buds. The molecular gastronomy menu features delightful bites of pork belly, tuna sashimi and buffalo chicken presented in a playful way that guests might not expect (and most kids may not appreciate).

    Mariner of the Seas

The 3,114-passenger Mariner of the Seas is an ideal ship for multigenerational cruises, with plenty of activities to please everyone from young adults to grandparents.

Older adults play cards or read in the serene library and card room or enjoy the ocean views from the Solarium. Young adults can pack their day with high-energy activities, such as laser tag, ice skating and boogie boarding on the FlowRider surf simulator.

At night, everyone in the family can come together for a meal. Reserve a table at Jamie’s Italian for a special group dinner. All of the pasta is made fresh, including the signature truffle tagliatelle, where thick noodles are tossed in truffle cream with fresh truffles and a hint of nutmeg. The fan-favorite “meat plank” is easy to share and laden with salami, prosciutto, mozzarella and focaccia.

Afterward, the group can catch the ice skating show (you’re never too old to enjoy the musical numbers and colorful costumes) or musical performances in the main theater before the younger set heads to the bars and the older generation turns in for the night.

Mariner of the Seas sails from Galveston, Texas, and Port Canaveral, Florida, to destinations across the Bahamas and Caribbean. Shorter four or five-night sailings are a great way to fit in a long weekend away, especially for younger adults with less time off work. Longer eight-night sailings to the islands make for a true getaway.

    Jewel of the Seas

Adults who relish scenic cruising should look no further than the 2,702-passenger Jewel of the Seas . The beautiful ship travels to a wide range of destinations, with fall foliage sailings in Canada and New England , adventurous itineraries to the Arctic Circle and northern destinations like Iceland and Greenland, and traditional cruises to the Caribbean.

The smaller ship is more desirable for adults looking to enjoy the destinations they are visiting rather than trying out the latest attractions at sea. The Viking Crown Lounge offers a quiet getaway during the day for looking out over the passing scenery and a hyped-up dance club at night. You can even get great landscape views from the glass elevators running along the sides of the ship.

No matter where you sail, Jewel of the Seas offers plenty of onboard activities suitable for adults. Take an all-access tour of the inner parts of the ship most people never see, test your luck at table games or slot machines in the casino, or dance the night away at the ’70s disco party.

Foodies and wine enthusiasts may never tire of the many bars and lounges on Jewel of the Seas. Try a variety of wines, either by the glass or the bottle, at Vintages wine bar, people watch and enjoy a cocktail at the Centrum lobby bar, or grab a seat at Vortex, where the spinning bar slowly rotates everyone around the room.

When it’s time to eat, head to Giovanni’s Table, where Italian dishes are prepared and served like they are at your nonna’s house. The kids might turn up their noses, but grownups will love the signature dishes, such as the grilled octopus appetizer and the housemade linguine with clams entree.

    Harmony of the Seas

Harmony of the Seas is one of the largest cruise ships in the world, carrying 5,497 passengers at double occupancy. It’s got activities for all ages and interests, with themed areas of the ships – called neighborhoods – dedicated to different pursuits, such as entertainment or swimming and sports. Adults can have thrilling experiences during the day, find their zen before heading off to dinner and enjoy entertainment late into the night, all by moving between a few decks.

Adventurous adults will love zip lining over the top of the Boardwalk or sliding down the Ultimate Abyss, a 10-story dry slide. Those looking for a more laid-back vacation can book treatment at the Vitality Spa, sample different varietals at a wine tasting or learn how to make sushi.

The ship’s Central Park area is romantic and made for adults. It’s a fantastic place to sit back with a cocktail and people-watch. Here, you’ll find upscale shops, restaurants and bars with indoor and outdoor seating set amid a garden of real plants and trees. To spend a full evening in Central Park, start at the Trellis Bar for wine or cocktails, then head to 150 Central Park, where the menu highlights seasonal ingredients.

Those looking for a more exciting evening will want to hang around Royal Promenade, which feels more like a buzzy city street than a cruise ship deck. Here, an English pub, a bar staffed by robots and a Latin-inspired lounge all come together to make for a fun night out. For a full night of entertainment, check out a live performance of “Grease” in the ship’s main theater.

Harmony of the Seas sets sail from Galveston and Miami, taking cruisers to the Caribbean on four- to eight-night sailings. The Miami sailings all stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico and Honduras.

    Bottom line

The best Royal Caribbean ships for adults may still have kids on board. However, they also offer something extra for grownups — whether that’s a more intimate ship size, out-of-the-ordinary itineraries, incredible choice of bars and restaurants, serene hangouts or thrilling attractions for active adults.

No matter which ship you choose, cruising with Royal Caribbean offers the ability to visit some of the world’s most sought-after destinations on a ship that teems with varied activities. While you won’t find adults-only Royal Caribbean cruises, you can tailor your cruise experience on these six ships to focus on more grown-up pursuits.
