A Solo Evening With Ryan Adams At Carnegie Hall, Saturday, May 14th, 2022, Reviewed

The first hour he was feeling his way through the set, the second hour he had it down, and the final forty minutes he got too samey. But, cutting to the chase before we start the review proper: Grade: A

Now that’s out of the way, Saturday night at Carnegie, the character straight out of “Through The Looking Glass” (first the verdict, then the trial), returned for the second best set Ryan Adams has ever put together. From Whiskeytown to “Romeo And Juliet” Ryan travelled far and wide for a Bruce Springsteenish 31 songs through the mirror darkly, he delved quietly and intensely through his past. The man who once shouted down an audience member with “my songs hate you” maintained a laser sharp focus on the material as he held the audience mesmerized with a piano, four guitars and a harp.

There is nothing wrong with wokeness, there is nothing wrong with cancel culture, after a world history that has one thing in common, women getting clobbered over the head with a club by men, it was demanded and correct, but it was bound to take a while for the pendulum to be at rest; if men, some men, Ryan Adams, are having their lives destroyed unwittingly, so be it. Up to a point. The thing is, the claims that Adams used promises of success to women if they bedded him seems a serious misreading of how a man who fell often and deeply in love to the place where he drove women he dated insane with his neediness, was doing nothing like dangling career prospects for sex. Of the two we have seen Adams presented, only one sounds as though it is the same man who wrote “To Be Without You”.

The last time we saw Ryan on stage was 2017 ( here ), he was a post-divorce disaster area, with one album filled with devastating heartbreak both slow and fast, and another, his L.A. album, just before it. He performed a 22 song sprint interrupted over and over again by his attempts at humor which seemed in the business of disrupting his performance. At Carnegie Hall in 2014 he performed a 22 song set, same venue in 2011 we got 25 songs. But 31 songs? Knocking on three hours, last night was a set’s set.

The first six songs, from a gorgeous and beautifully sung “Oh My Sweet Carolina” to “Two” on piano as he moved from being centrally located and surrounded by acoustic guitars in the middle of the stage where he couldn’t keep his guitar in tune, he killed a very simple, piano pecked sublimity and then back in the middle of the room for a simply exquisite “When the Stars Go Blue” with Ryan’s sweet aching falsetto carrying us there. Yes, the problems with tuning was an annoyance, especially since he played everything in the same key and at the same tempo so eh?, but it didn’t derail the experience.

The next five songs less meandered and more stayed in their lane, it wasn’t boring but what it was was Ryan as musically form, it didn’t matter what the songs were and it didn’t matter how he sang em, whether pulling on a sweater (a good joke: “The best part was when he got cold” he imagines an audience member saying later) or giving the stink eye to a guitar tech guy, the mood was both collegial and also of a piece: the songs blended.

The following six songs he forced them to blend, “Firecracker” to “New York New York” and you wonder exactly what he is doing this for, the one egregious moment was the re-arranged “New York New York” where he messed with the belly of the song so much it missed the hooks, the speed was a mess and a couplet that alone should have maintained his superstardom, “I was holding her hand, she was holding my trust like a child”, is a little rushed during a set that constantly takes its time. If “New York New York” didn’t make it, for sure “To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High)” was perfection mostly because at the age of 47 he could channel his 25 year old self, he sounded the same and with the same pain. “Chris” – the album is my personal favorite of the past two years- is so sad, (for his brother? for a former band mate?), a real heartbreaker.

The beginning of the beginning of the end following six included the two Whiskeytown songs and the most glorious moment of the night, “I Love You But I Don’t Know What To Say” – for all its quietness the chorus is so strong Ryan stuck it to you like glue. And with the exception of “Romeo And Juliet” the conversation stops and the songs merge together like they are wallpapering your brain with a certain musical loop of quiet sadness and sorrow through “Come Pick Me Up”. He encored with Black Sabbath, but don’t get too excited he chose “The Wizard” and maintained the mood, before he said goodbye with a very sweet thank you.

When Ryan Adams claimed he had only two friends in the world, it appears to have been true: all those famous rock stars turned their backs on him. Nobody in the music press even mentioned the tour this evening starts, the #metoo pendulum swung and hit him hard. He lost so much but he gained one thing, as his apologies were ignored and as the New York Times failed to announce that the LAPD had dropped the investigation of endangering the welfare of a child after the child in question admitted that she lied about her age, he found out who his friends were. It is as though he got cancelled for being the only Ryan Adams he could be, as though the always sensitive man had a gaggle of women ready to destroy his career if not, indeed, his life, because he drove them crazy. What Ryan did last night was to represent himself as the singer songwriter and man he is and always was. But this entire mess has taught Ryan to appreciate those who love him, yes, even his fans who love him. It ripped apart any illusions he might have ever held about human beings and once that is removed what is left is people who truly care about him. He returned the favor with a beautiful set that held our trust like a child.

Just an excellent review and well balanced mix of both his personal and professional life and performance. You really have both done a detailed concert review and provided those that are perhaps not as familiar with his larger story with an excellent merging and context to all of the above Having followed his career since whiskeytown and his personal travails as well, on a personal level I find myself in basically total agreement with all your comments. Really, really well done!!!!

' src=

Thank you so much for your generous words

Wow. i soooo wish i was there. Ryan Adams, and this sounds dramatic but it’s true, taught me it’s okay to be sad. It’s okay to let out pain, and heartbreak, it’s okay – you don’t have to always pretend everything is alright. He’s brave for that, and he’s brave for this solo tour. He did some shitty things, but whom amongst us hasn’t done things we’re ashamed of – the difference is, he’s a public figure. I hope he’s sober, healthy mentally and learned his lesson from his personal life. IMHO – one of the most underrated singer songwriters…ever.

Bear with me…. As a young single general contractor, I often had girlfriends ask me to fix, repair or add on to their homes for “free”. Once I found out a “girlfriend” wasn’t being faithful, so I stopped working on her project. Glad it was before the days of cancel culture or I would have been the villain, instead of the whore using me. Great article on a artist I feel was treated the same.

' src=

I never thought of it that way, is this about Phoebe or Mandy or someone else?

' src=

There are so many examples like this. I had a girl tell me she dated a guy until she got all his streaming service passwords.

' src=

Truly stellar comeback show. Never doubted it would be anything less. Congratulations Ryan, we’ll deserved accolades!

' src=

I was there last night, drove all the way from western Maryland to be there.. I’m a long time Fan of Adams and have seen him live a couple times before.. Your review hit the nail on the head- the set list was huge and full of bangers.. I went in expecting to be there til 10pm.. but leaving right before 11pm made the trip worth it.. I was happy to be apart of this all inclusive experience..nice review

' src=

A more than fair perspective. I’d like to see him do full band shows, electric interspersed with acoustic, also with band.

' src=

Thank you, Iman.

' src=

Amazing text. Thanks a lot and congratulations for the quality of this review.

' src=

Ryan stepping back on stage again was electrifying to say the least. Stirring all the feels with his incredibly deep lyrics and amazing voice left me with joyous tears streaming down my grinning face, several times throughout the evening. Stellar return to performing.

' src=

What a thoughtful review of the show as well as the man. I saw the last show Ta Carnegie hall when in hindsight it was clear things around him were falling apart. I didn’t see this show though I’ve seen him about 15 times before but thanks to you I feel almost like I did. thank you.

' src=

Great review. My wife and I were there and it was our first time seeing Ryan. We have been long time fans but never got the chance to check him out. After seeing him on Saturday night, I am thankful that we can always look back to this as our first time we saw Ryan Adams.

His vulnerability was humbling. It was a great set and never did I think he would play 31 songs (and all bangers!)! What an awesome experience.

Great review! Thank you for this.

' src=

there’s nothing wrong with cancel culture ? hmm that’s funny from an educated ( ? ) writer …

' src=

There is everything wrong with cancel culture.

It’s the equivalent of witch burning, where a group of moral authoritarians judge and destroy the life of another without fair hearing.

It is good that Ryan has made it through the inquisition. As you rightly say, he’s found out who his real friends and fans are.

' src=

VERY well-written review, great work.

I still haven’t been able to take Ryan back despite taking issue with various aspects of the Times article that got him cancelled. Having a good idea of his character and behavior after following him for almost 20 yrs, I think your assessment of him “driving women crazy with his neediness” is much closer to the truth than him being a Harvey Weinstein-level monster.

But either way, I’m passing on this tour. I went to each of the other 2 previous Carnegie Hall runs and wasn’t really interested in the type of show this was going to be. Wish he’d keep the solo act to Instagram live, swallow some pride, and try playing with some other actual musicians.

Firstly I will say I love Ryan Adams, but I was very disappointed in this show. The opening statement given before he came on made him look like a prima dona that would excuse him from failing. No flashing lights from cameras/phones....then the first song was accompanied by ....flashing stage lights!!!

As to the performance, I expected some subtlety, as he demonstrates in many of his beautiful lyrical songs... but was greeted with and onslaught of driving rock, a wall of sound with Adams sreaming like a Bruce Springsteen sound alike.....walked out before the end.

Ryan is good as usual

He did a very powerful concert, with strong electrical sound.

To be honest I prefer more acoustic tune but it's only a personal opinion and the concert was good anyway.

Corn Exchange has a high acoustics level sound but seats disposition is terrible and I really struggled to see the stage and not the back head of the person in front of me. Worse of that, temperature in the back and top places became very high (hot air go up) and many attendees went away before concert finished.

So, Ryan 4 stars out 5, Corn Exchange 2 stars out 5.

I've seen Ryan Adams play Brisbane either with the cardinals or solo. The Tivoli in my opinion has always been my favourite place to see him.

The music varied from the cardinal days (sweet illusions) to the more recent songs of Do you still love me...

He was more talkative this time round which was a real treat. Loved the improv Brisbane Gothic Girl and his story during my winding wheel.

I think my favourite songs that night were When the Stars go Blue and of course Wonderwall.

He played til midnight and whilst it was a work night, it was worth the tired eyes and sore head....

It was great to come from a gig just welling with conversation, smiles and a few vinos....

Ryan Adams Tests the Waters With a Comeback Tour

Ryan Adams comeback tour

Ryan Adams is attempting a mini-touring comeback, testing whether he’ll be able to pick up his career where he left it following sexual misconduct allegations.

The eight-city tour begins on October 14 in Atlanta, GA, and ends in Ames, IA, on October 22. In-between dates include shows at the Chicago Theatre, Minneapolis’ State Theatre, Milwaukee’s Riverside Theater, The Factory in St. Louis, The Palace in Louisville, and Asheville’s Thomas Wolfe Auditorium. Adams also booked one additional performance, scheduled at the Orpheum in Los Angeles on July 22.

The announcement of a short tour gauges interest in the artist making a comeback after three years of laying low in the music industry. Following  The New York Times ‘ 2019  article  in which seven women accused him of sexual misconduct, including Adams’ ex-wife, singer Mandy Moore, Adams’  career  took a nosedive.

These upcoming shows — along with the five he completed recently on the east coast — are Adams’ attempt to prove that he still has a sizable audience despite the 2019 allegations.

Tickets will go on sale Friday at 10 am PT. Like his east coast performances, these shows will be solo performances, likely running around two and a half hours in length.

Richard Jones, Adams’ manager who is organizing the shows alongside Adams’ ICM agent Mike Hayes,  says , “The word of mouth from the first leg of the tour was so good that promoters came to us. Ryan hasn’t toured since 2019 and there seems to be a voracious appetite to see him perform live.”

Ryan Adams lost his distribution deal with Blue Note Records following the 2019 allegations, but that hasn’t stopped the label’s president, Don Was, from working with him. Was recorded Adams’ sold-out May performance in Carnegie Hall for a live album expected to release later this year.

Jones explains there had been reluctance on the part of venues to book Adams but that the success of the Carnegie Hall show has encouraged promoters to reach out.

“What’s happened, noticeably, since we’ve completed those shows is the amount of promoters across the world that have now contacted us and are offering dates in venues and wanting to book Ryan,” Jones says.

Following some successful east coast tour dates in May, Adams is moving on to markets like Chicago and Atlanta as he looks to reestablish viability as a live artist three years after allegations of sexual misconduct put his career in limbo.

In a further test of whether he will be able to pick up his career somewhere in the vicinity of where it left off amid misconduct allegations three years ago, Ryan Adams has announced a tour of eight cities in the Midwest and South, following up on a run of five cities in the Northeast he completed in May.

The mini-tour of mid-sized halls begins Oct. 14 with a stop at Atlanta’s 2,600-seat Tabernacle and wraps up in the almost identically sized Stephens Auditorium in Ames, Iowa Oct. 22. Dates in-between include Chicago’s Chicago Theatre, Minneapolis’ State Theatre, Milwaukee’s Riverside Theater. St. Louis’ Factory, Louisville’s Palace and Asheville’s Thomas Wolfe.

While an eight-city tour announcement might be a blip in most artists’ careers, it’s significant for Adams in that he has spent the last three years as pretty much persona non grata in the music industry, by his own admission, following a 2019 New York Times article that alleged sexual misconduct and emotional manipulation in his dealings with women, particularly among female artists he worked with.

These new bookings, along with the five shows he completed in the east and one he has coming up at Los Angeles’ Orpheum July 22, are his bid to prove that a sizable portion of his audience has stuck with him despite the allegations that left his career in limbo for three years.

Popular on Variety

These newly announced shows go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. PT. Like the other shows Adams has done this year, they will be solo performances, likely with a running time similar to the two hours and 40 minutes that Adams averaged in his east coast gigs.

“The word of mouth from the first leg of the tour was so good that promoters came to us,” Richard Jones, Adams’ manager, said in a statement. “Ryan hasn’t toured since 2019 and there seems to be a voracious appetite to see him perform live.”  Jones is putting the shows together along with Adams’ ICM agent, Mike Hayes.

Although Adams lost his distribution deal with Blue Note Records in the wake of the 2019 allegations, that label’s president, Don Was, has continued to work with him and recorded Adams’ sold-out Carnegie Hall show in May for a live album expected to come out later this year.

In a story earlier this month titled “Can Ryan Adams Be a Rock Star Again? With a New Team and Return to Concerts, Singer Looks to Move Past Sexual Misconduct Allegations,” Variety talked with Jones and crisis PR specialist Howard Bragman about their efforts to put Adams back into the spotlight.

In that story, the singer’s new manager admitted there had been a reluctance by venues and promoters to book Adams, but said the Carnegie show broke the logjam. “I think the truth is, somebody had to do it first, and then people noticed and realized that it was successful, and he was obviously in an extremely good place personally and could deliver such a good, extensive show,” Jones said. “What’s happened, noticeably, since we’ve completed those shows is the amount of promoters across the world that have now contacted us and are offering dates in venues and wanting to book Ryan.”

Adams’ reps put the total gross for the five east coast shows at around $600,000.

Previously, in a Los Angeles magazine profile last year, Adams — who had five top 10 albums in the Billboard 200 between 2007-2017 — had said he was in danger of becoming destitute as a result of being ostracized by the music industry.

With the apparent success of the east coast shows, Adams looked to join a list of entertainers like Louis C.K. that have been able to resume their careers — with practical limitations — after becoming #MeToo emblems, with some former fans lost forever and others saying it’s time to extend forgiveness or contending that the performer was railroaded all along.

Adams’ itinerary can be found here . The new dates:

Live Review: Ryan Adams – 19th April 2023 – London Palladium, London, UK

Photo: EMI Music Australia

Last night, legendary singer songwriter Ryan Adams returned to his self proclaimed home away from home – London – to perform the last of his solo UK tour at the Palladium in Soho. It’s the star’s first stretch of performances in the UK since 2018, after cancelling his show at the Royal Albert Hall in 2019. His return is a potent and personal affair, with just the man himself onstage. Surrounded by his instruments, the intimacy is almost necessary, both for Adams and his fans.

The night officially begins with fan favourite Sweet Carolina . Ryan’s strained vocals feel even more vulnerable in this solo setting, and the lonely feeling – for the most part – is reciprocated by the crowd. He admitted early on that he and his team were nervous about the London show, the singer suffering from a mild cold to name one such issue, but nothing revealed as such. A few technical difficulties, and a couple of unfunny heckles from the audience sent Ryan on comedic tangents, showing that he’s no stranger to on stage banter. One man was singled out in the front row for looking ‘judgy’. “I hope he’s the reviewer” Ryan joked, before sarcastically adding “God forbid I do anything to ruin my perfect career”.

In a truly intimate moment, he alluded to the controversies he had been through in the past few years, but mainly he spoke of his deceased brother Chris, who died while Ryan was on tour in 2017. The heartfelt speech was followed by To Be Without You , a song that he says has changed meaning since it was first released. “It’s still about a chick though,” Ryan prefaced, “my brother would understand”. Lighter moments littered the set; Ryan pretending he had magical powers, wowing the audience as the house lights came on; a wise crack about not being allowed to have a rear view mirror on his piano, as he can’t drive in the UK. All these things melded with the songs, creating a well-rounded evening of sadness and joy.

Covers such as Moon River, Don’t Look Back In Anger, London Calling and Wonderwall showed Ryan’s influences, while alternative versions of some of his biggest songs – such as Gimme Something Good and New York, New York – showed his fluidity. Even songs he isn’t so fond of, such as Answering Bell , were played for the audience’s enjoyment alone. “I hate this song,” he began, “and I wish I never wrote it. I’m gonna judge you for liking it”. Unfortunately for Ryan, there wasn’t a disappointed person in the house.

Concert review: Ryan Adams, Auckland Town Hall

Ryan Adams (Supplied).

This being his fourth visit in eight years and his biggest show here yet, it would seem Ryan Adams is still making new friends in these parts. And not just among the nation's cat lovers either.

In Auckland ahead of the first night of his Australasian tour, the American singer-songwriter had instigated rescue attempts via Twitter of a stray in Grafton cemetery.

It got him international media attention. Such is the winning formula of cats and the internet.

On stage last night, a couple of feline cut-outs sat upon the big fake guitar amps sitting alongside with a couple of 80s arcade games adding a low glow to a lightshow that stayed moody and pretty, if less-than-illuminating, throughout the evening.

After his previous visits with backers the Cardinals and a solo acoustic show at the Civic in 2012, this time Adam brought with him new band, The Shining. And as that name suggests, they had plenty of attack in the axe department via the combined guitars of Adams himself and co-producer Mike Viola. Elsewhere too - keyboardist Daniel Clarke's organ-playing, with its deft gospel-psychedelic-jazzy touches, possibly left the Town Hall's grand piped instrument feeling a bit unloved.

This tour comes after Adams' solid self-titled album of 2014, one of more than a dozen studio releases since the prolific songwriter with the edgy personality first emerged at the start of the noughties.

While starting off with the latest album's lead track, Gimme Something Good and adding the Tom Pettyesque Stay With Me from it two songs later suggested this was going to be a mild-mannered record-plugging kind of show, it didn't stay that way for long.

In fact, rather than the newer songs, it was the way Adams and cohorts reworked older tunes that turned this into something surprising and exciting.

The first sign that something special was afoot came in an epic extended burn through Dirty Rain , early in the set.

After that came plenty more moments achieving lift-off. The likes of Magnolia Mountain and Peaceful Valley became Grateful Dead-like guitar odysseys, while the sweetly rustic Americana of Nobody Girl turned country-metal thriller.

Adams had been fairly garrulous at his past two Auckland shows. He wasn't in a chatty mood this time, other than taking time to introduce the band and jokingly warning those shouting song requests that their fave would be crossed off the setlist and replaced with Stairway to Heaven .

He didn't make good on the threat, though he did thrown in his acoustic solo cover of Oasis anthem Wonderwall as the single encore.

And if long-time followers wanted to hear his early stuff, there was plenty of it - his 2000 debut Heartbreaker album contributing a fair chunk to the two dozen or so songs played, including fiery blasts through To Be Young (Is To be Sad, Is to Be High) and Shakedown on 59th Street .

The set didn't lack for restrained balladry, like a solo acoustic Winding Wheel , or La Ciegna Just Smiled and a lovely stirring Come Pick Me Up to finish the main set on.

But how Adams and band scorched the corners of the back pages of his songbook was what made this his most memorable show here yet.

I wonder if it will bum him out the tour isn't selling well. Maybe it's just a few shows though and the Midwest is jsit selling bad but he used to sell out all the shows he played in the Midwest. The economy is pretty rough right now as well. I can't justify $200+ bucks for a concert right now when I've got 2 kids.

Not Bryan Adams although he is cool too. Ryan addresses cancelled tour and future plans. as much as I like the guy's music, a big part of me is just here to watch this trainwreck. I hope he can find his health, but there is nothing more I can or am willing to do to support him. So much of this he has brought on himself with his shitty behavior.
