We evaluate mattress performance for back, side, and stomach sleeping—for sleepers of all shapes and sizes. We look at a variety of performance categories, but we focused on a select few that are most important for orthopedic beds. More on that below!

Methodology Image- Sleep Advisor

What We Want to See in the Best Orthopedic Beds

A lot goes into a good orthopedic mattress, but here’s what we prioritize in our testing:

Those with orthopedic concerns want to make sure that any sensitive areas are protected from pressure buildup, which can exacerbate any existing issues. These mattresses should feature a contouring top, usually some type of foam, that conforms to your body’s unique shape.

Alongside softness to keep joints cushioned, it’s important to have a bed that properly supports you and keeps your spine in a comfortable position. The ideal mattress will have just the right amount of lift and give so your spine remains neutral and relatively straight, without causing undue stress.

The combination of the two points above also contributes to perhaps the most important factor of an orthopedic mattress: the bed’s ability to relieve pain—whether it’s by offering pressure relief or providing support in the proper areas. We evaluate which beds are best for pain relief in relation to your sleeping position, body type, and where the pain might be centralized.

Why the Nectar Earned Best Orthopedic Mattress Overall

Nectar’s flagship mattress is an all-foam bed that should benefit folks with orthopedic concerns because of its soft surface. The 2-inch therapeutic gel memory foam layer promotes excellent pressure relief, contouring to your body and fostering proper spinal alignment.

You’ll also get this soft support without many of the drawbacks of traditional foam. For example, its single-action cooling system helps you remain comfortable throughout the night, regulating your body temperature and preventing overheating—a boon when it comes to all-foam mattresses. So, it’s easy to see why it got first place.

What’s the Nectar Made Of?

The Nectar mattress is 12 inches thick and has a total of five layers including its lower and top covers. All of the foams in this mattress are CertiPUR-US® certified.

The top cover is made from polyethylene fibers for a breathable sleep experience. Underneath, the first layer of foam is a 2-inch sheet of gel memory foam for cooling pressure relief.

Then, 3 inches of a more responsive foam help with repositioning and support. The 7-inch base layer provides stability and prevents the mattress from sagging, ensuring that you have a comfortable sleep surface for years to come.

Testing the layers and construction of the nectar mattress

The lower cover keeps your mattress and everything within it from shifting around.

My Take: The top of the Nectar Mattress feels soft enough for cushioning, especially around pressure points, but there’s firm support underneath to ensure you don’t sink in too far.

What I Liked

  • Good for couples – The Nectar’s 3-inch transition layer minimizes motion transfer, ensuring that you don’t feel your partner’s movements during the night.
  • Affordable – This bed comes in at a super reasonable price when you consider the quality of what you’re getting. A queen will cost you about $1,000, but that’s before coupons and sales.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too soft for some – Some heavier sleepers or those who prefer to sleep on their stomachs might have trouble feeling supported by the Nectar’s all-foam construction.
  • Could be cooler – Though the Nectar has some cooling capabilities built into its foams, it’s still more likely to retain heat than a hybrid mattress, which has more airflow.

Customer Reviews of the Nectar

With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website , the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars . One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

Saatva Classic – Best Orthopedic Mattress for Back Pain

Saatva mattress.

Saatva Classic Mattress in Sleep Advisor

Coil-on-coil structure gives this elevated innerspring bed a luxurious feel and versatility.

Innerspring

Free white glove delivery, multiple firmness options, hot sleepers, stomach sleeping, why the saatva classic earned best orthopedic mattress for back pain.

The Saatva Classic is one of my favorite beds to recommend for back pain, as its signature construction focuses on healthy spinal alignment and lumbar support.

Its two coil units plus proprietary Lumbar Zone® Technology work to prevent pressure buildup while keeping you pleasantly aloft. The Classic was also awarded a seal of approval from chiropractors, making it a strong choice for those with general orthopedic needs.

What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?

Each Saatva Classic begins with a 3-inch Euro pillow top. Covered by organic cotton, this plush comfort layer consists of soft foams, but tightens up slightly around the middle to better lift your lumbar spine.

Underneath is a layer of high-density memory foam that takes up the same middle region of the bed. It’s meant to combine pressure relief with additional targeted lumbar support.

Next is the first of the Classic’s two coil units: a zoned layer of pocketed coils that provide extra pushback in the bed’s center third (again, directly under the lumbar area.) It’s backed up by a second coil unit, wherein the springs are interconnected and augmented by a Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire. This wire—you guessed it—borders the lumbar region for even more lift.

The inside of the Saatva Classic Mattress

This bed comes in two heights: 11.5 or 14.5 inches. You can also choose between a Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm feel.

My Take: The Saatva Classic is a standout when it comes to preventing back pain, since it’s designed with lumbar support in mind. You can find specialized lower back support added into plenty of layers in the mattress, fromits pillow top to its dual coil units.

  • Lasts long – Thanks to springs made of recycled carbon steel that’s tempered three times, this mattress is engineered to last long and resist sagging.
  • Customizable – With three firmness levels and two heights to choose from, you can easily find the perfect mattress makeup to suit your individual needs.
  • Returns will cost you – If you want to return your Saatva mattress within the trial window, you’ll have to pay $99 to have it shipped back.
  • Motion carries – I could definitely sense larger movements when testing out the Saatva Classic.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website . One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Helix Midnight  – Best Orthopedic Mattress for Pressure Relief

Helix midnight mattress.

Helix Midnight Mattress

Part of Helix’s core line of mattresses, the Midnight has a hybrid construction that’s particularly suited to back and side sleepers.

Medium-firm: 6/10

10-year warranty, why the helix midnight earned best orthopedic mattress for pressure relief.

The Helix Midnight rates well for sleepers who may be struggling with back, hip, and shoulder pain, so it’s a great pick when it comes to an orthopedic mattress. Its innerspring coils provide support while its foams specialize in cushioning, and it’s also an exceptionally versatile bed. It should work for a variety of sleepers in a multitude of positions due to its medium-firm feel and ability to evenly distribute weight.

Since it’s built for side sleepers, its pressure-relieving ability is truly top notch. We gave it a 5/5 on our testing scale.

What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of?

The Helix Midnight has five internal layers that add up to 11.5 inches in height.

Its soft cover leads into an initial layer of Memory Plus Foam, a pressure-relieving material exclusive to the Helix brand. Beneath, two layers of Helix Responsive Foam add a bit of bounce to the bed, as well as more cushioning between sleepers and the mattress’s spring unit.

All of these foams are CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning they don’t contain certain potentially harmful materials.

A closer look at the Helix Midnight mattress construction

The springs in the Midnight are individually encased in fabric pockets to prevent too much motion transfer and provide targeted pushback. They’re also reinforced on the long sides of the bed, so if you roll to the brink of the mattress, you should still feel supported.

Our Take: “It definitely has good response and bounce. I can move and adjust positions, no problem.” – Emma Mattei , Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Isolates motion well – Restless sleepers and partners with different sleep schedules shouldn’t bother one another too much with their movements on the Helix Midnight.
  • Cooling capability – The breathable cover helps to keep the surface of the mattress cool to the touch, and most sleepers seem to avoid overheating with the added airflow around the hybrid’s coils.
  • Not much cradling – “If you want that old-school memory foam feel, this bed may not be for you,” said Emma. For a mattress that surrounds you with a cradling feel, try an all-foam model.
  • Too soft for stomach sleepers – In this position, Emma’s hips felt as though they were sinking a trifle too low.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website . The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

DreamCloud Premier  – Best Hybrid Orthopedic Mattress

Dreamcloud premier mattress.

DreamCloud Premier Mattress

The DreamCloud Premier is a great option for those who want a more luxurious sleeping experience.

Medium: 5.5/10

Why the dreamcloud premier earned best hybrid orthopedic mattress.

Hybrid beds merge the unbeatable support you get from springs with the coziness of foam, and the DreamCloud Premier hits an ideal balance between the two. It has a slightly softer feel than its predecessor, the DreamCloud, and is therefore more welcoming to side and back sleepers with orthopedic concerns.

A full four layers of foam form a comfortable buffer between you and the innersprings at its base. The coils, meanwhile, give the lumbar zone some noteworthy lift and make the bed pleasantly bouncy.

What’s the DreamCloud Premier Made Of?

The DreamCloud Premier is 13 inches tall and built from seven layers if you include its top cover.

The cover is made from a cashmere blend decorated with stitched clouds. Quilted directly under it are two layers of foam: a contouring gel foam for initial cushion, and a supportive foam for a buoying feel.

Next is a layer of gel-infused memory foam. This layer’s key function is pressure relief, and the gel inside of it should help prevent too much heat from building up inside. A transitional layer of foam beneath it marks the switch from comfort layers to the supportive spring unit below.

The coils in the DreamCloud Premier are individually wrapped and reinforced along the edges. They sit on top of a sturdy foam base.

My Take: The DreamCloud Premier relieves pressure extremely well, and its support system felt great beneath my lower back (with some slight dipping when I shifted onto my stomach). I’d recommend it to back and side sleepers without reservation.

  • Pressure relief doesn’t negate alignment – Although this bed takes pressure off of sensitive spots, it doesn’t do so at the expense of support and alignment. Side sleepers should feel cradled while their hips and shoulders remain level with one another.
  • Quite responsive – It’s got a decent amount of bounce for a mattress with multiple foam layers up top, so combination sleepers should be able to change positions pretty easily.
  • Edges could be better – I felt supported enough while lying at the edge of the bed, but when I sat down, the sides really sagged.
  • Motion isolation isn’t great – During testing, we couldn’t feel small movements across this mattress, but big ones caused it to rock and shake.

Customer Reviews of the DreamCloud Premier

Coming in at 4.5 out of 5 stars on DreamCloud’s site , the DreamCloud Premier receives a majority of positive reviews. Customers praise the DreamCloud Premier mattress for its luxury feel, but some have noted that it may not be the best choice for those on a tighter budget.

WinkBed Mattress

WinkBeds Mattress

WinkBed is a luxury hybrid bed with a variety of comfort features that should make it a versatile pick for most sleeping positions.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Orthopedic Mattress for Couples

The WinkBed mattress is an excellent choice for people with orthopedic needs, and particularly for couples. It’s designed with a blend of pressure-relieving foam layers and individually wrapped coils to provide the right level of support and comfort for each sleeper.

Where couples are concerned, the WinkBed is a great option since it has plenty of bounce for sexually-active partners and strong edges for full use of the surface. With plenty of firmness options, too, it’s easier to tailor the bed to the needs of both partners.

What’s the WinkBed Made Of?

The WinkBed is 13.5 inches tall and comes in four firmness options: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus.

The cover is made of moisture-wicking Tencel™ for a comfortably soft and dry sleep experience.

Then, the Euro pillow top gives the mattress its cushiony surface, along with gel-infused foam that seeks to reduce unwanted heat buildup.

WinkBeds Mattress Construction

A series of transitional comfort foams lead into the innerspring unit beneath. This layer is made up of individually wrapped coils that are zoned to balance support and give across different parts of the body, thereby encouraging healthy spinal alignment. Along the perimeter of the mattress, the coils are reinforced to keep the edges solid.

Our Take: “The WinkBed should be a good option for couples thanks to its sturdy construction and reinforced edge coils that maximize sleep space.” – Sean, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

  • Something for everyone – The WinkBed is available in three different firmness levels, allowing shoppers to choose the feel that best suits their needs. The different models include Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus.
  • Durable and strong – Sean called the bed “strong and sturdy,” and I agree. The materials inside this mattress should give it an enviable longevity.
  • No hugging foams – The lift this mattress offers makes you feel like you’re lying on top of it, rather than swaddled in it.
  • Some motion transfers – When it comes to dampening motion, the WinkBed does fine for a hybrid, but it won’t have the same effect as an all-foam bed.

Customer Reviews of the WinkBed

On the WinkBeds site , the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars . One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid

Saatva memory foam hybrid mattress

This mattress from Saatva combines the pressure relief of memory foam  and the support of springs for a cooling and restful night’s sleep.

Why the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Earned Best Orthopedic Mattress for Back Sleepers

Back sleepers with orthopedic concerns are going to need a bed that balances pressure relief and support, and the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid checks both boxes. As the name implies, this bed combines cushy, pressure-relieving foams and a sturdy innerspring unit that should keep the spine aligned.

There’s more to it: it keeps pretty cool, thanks to the gel infused in its foams. Its surface is also responsive enough for ease of movement as you toss, turn, or switch positions.

What’s the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Made Of?

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is 11.5 inches tall with six layers (including its cover). This cover is made of hypoallergenic cotton, and quilted to support the lower back. It also features a botanical Guardin™ treatment that protects against the buildup of bacteria and mold.

Underneath the cover is a crown of gel-infused memory foam that further bolsters lumbar support. Then, a 1.5-inch layer of breathable AirCradle™ foam molds to your body for cushioning.

The coil unit consists of pocketed coils that respond to your movements and ensure you stay lifted on the mattress surface. Foam rails around the edges of the mattress keep the edges from sagging. And, finally, everything sits on an inch of stable support foam.

Our Take: Saatva consistently delivers quality high-end mattresses without the super-exorbitant price tag. The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is sure to delight most, since it has features that appeal to almost all types of sleepers, alongside couples or luxury shoppers.

  • Free fancy delivery – Saatva offers white glove delivery with all their mattress purchases. This means a team of experts will come to your house to deliver and set up your new mattress.
  • Plenty of bounce – Despite the cushy memory foam layers on top of the mattress, the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is pretty springy, thanks to its coils.
  • Not very cradling – This bed does feature some memory foam, but it’s not enough for that super-sink foam fans might enjoy. Despite this, it should still feel cushioning.
  • Too soft for some – Some stomach sleepers may still find the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid isn’t firm enough to keep their hips from sinking in too far.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid has around 160 reviews on Saatva’s website with a total score of 4.8 out of 5 stars . Customers appreciate the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid for its balanced mix of support and comfort, but some find its motion transfer noticeable, which can be a concern for couples.

Nolah Signature 12″ Mattress

nolah signature mattress

Shoppers interested in a hybrid feel should find this Signature bed a perfect choice for their needs.

Why the Nolah Signature Earned Best Orthopedic Mattress for Side Sleepers

The Nolah Signature mattress is an excellent choice for people with orthopedic needs, particularly side sleepers. It features an all-foam construction that offers exceptional pressure relief, cradling the body and reducing stress on the hips, shoulders, and other sensitive areas.

This mattress is also designed with Nolah’s patented AirFoam™, which Nolah claims is scientifically proven to provide four times more pressure relief than traditional memory foam.

What’s the Nolah Signature Made Of?

The Nolah Signature is 12 inches thick and has a total of five layers including the cover. This breathable organic cotton cover helps regulate temperature and keeps sleepers from overheating throughout the night.

The first layer underneath the cover is a 2.5-inch layer of AirFoam™ for cooling and pressure relief. Then, 1.5 inches of Active Response Foam give the bed some bounce. A firmer 1-inch layer of AirFoam™ adds support and serves as the final comfort layer before the core below. This foundation is made up of 7 inches of dense, durable foam.

Our Take: “When sleeping on my slide, I love this bed. It’s like a dream. It’s like memory foam but it has a much cooler feel.” – Emma, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

  • Dampens motion transfer – The Nolah’s construction ensures that any movement on one side of the bed does not disturb the other side, making the Signature an excellent choice for couples.
  • Cool for foam – Foam beds are notorious for overheating, but the Nolah Signature has a cooler feel thanks to its breathable layers and AirFoam™ technology.
  • Can feel too soft – The Nolah Signature feels pretty plush, so it won’t be a match for people who require a firmer, more supportive mattress–like heavy folks or stomach sleepers.
  • Lacking edge support – The foam edges of this mattress don’t have any special reinforcement, so they’re likely to buckle or sag under weight.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Signature

The Nolah Signature gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website . One potential drawback of the Nolah Signature mattress is its limited firmness options, but it excels in providing exceptional pressure relief and a cooling sleep experience.

Bear Original Mattress

safari mattress orthopedic

This flagship model was thoughtfully crafted and assembled to be an attractive all-foam option for athletes who need better rest.

Why the Bear Original Earned Best Orthopedic Mattress for Athletes

The Bear Original is an all-foam bed with layers that provide a responsive, cooling respite after an action-filled day.

But many athletes want more than standard comfort from their beds—they need relief for achy bones and muscles, too. When it comes to orthopedic needs, this mattress’s high-density foam should evenly distribute your body weight while relieving tension from key pressure points.

What’s the Bear Original Made Of?

The Bear Original mattress has three foam layers in its 10-inch construction. The cover of the mattress is made of breathable Tencel™ fibers sustainably derived from wood pulp. For an added fee, you can upgrade to an allegedly recovery-enhancing Celliant® cover.

The first foam layer is made of memory foam infused with cooling gel that drives away heat while promoting proper alignment. Underneath, a layer of Bear’s dynamic foam allows for both responsiveness and pressure relief. Finally, a layer of high-density foam gives the bed its supportive base.

Our Take: “It’s a little firmer than the typical all-foam mattress, which should make it a little bit more versatile for different kinds of sleepers.” – Stuart Petty , Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

  • Fancy upgrade – For an additional fee, your Bear Original mattress can feature a cover made with Celliant®, a performance fabric that is designed to convert body heat into infrared energy, reportedly enhancing muscle recovery.
  • Feels cool – The Tencel™ or Celliant® top layer should help regulate body temperature by offering a breathable surface. Bear also infuses its memory foam layer with graphite gel to further promote a cooler sleep space.
  • Thin profile – The Bear is only 10 inches thick, making it the thinnest option on this list and a little lower than most mattresses.
  • Too firm for some – Lightweight side sleepers may find the firm foams in the Bear’s construction just a bit too unyielding to give them proper pressure relief.

Customer Reviews of the Bear Mattress

According to Bear’s website , the Bear Original scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Bear Original mattress for its excellent pressure relief but have reported that its edge support may be lacking, which could affect those who use the full mattress surface.

Titan Plus mattress testing image

This specially-designed hybrid is made for heavier sleepers to help them get better, more comfortable sleep.

Firm: 7.5/10

Why the titan plus earned best orthopedic mattress for heavyweight sleepers.

The Titan Plus is an innovative mattress engineered specifically for heavyweight sleepers. It features a combination of high-density foam and individually wrapped coils that both provide exceptional support and durability. These foams and coils work together to cushion the body without allowing too much sinkage, which is often a problem for heavier folks.

From an orthopedic perspective, the mattress is designed to distribute weight evenly and relieve pressure from sensitive areas such as the hips, shoulders, and back.

What’s the Titan Plus Made Of?

The Titan Plus is 11 inches tall with five layers. It features a breathable cover that promotes airflow and helps regulate temperature, which is essential for people who tend to sleep hot.

The topmost layer of the mattress beneath the cover is a 1-inch layer of gel memory foam for cooling pressure relief.

Next, 2 inches of TitanFlex™ foam add responsiveness to the sleep surface while contouring to your body.

Brooklyn Bedding Titan Plus Construction from the lab

Six inches of individually wrapped coils make up the supportive innerspring unit, which features reinforced coils along the perimeter for edge support. Finally, at the bottom of the bed is a 2-inch dense foam base.

Our Take: “I definitely sink in a little bit, but this mattress feels supportive enough that I don’t feel stuck at all. Unlike many mattresses that I have tried, my weight is evenly distributed over this surface and I feel extremely comfortable.” – Patrick, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

  • Solid edges – The Titan Plus offers robust edge support, which is an advantage for sleepers who need a stable surface to sit on and for getting in and out of bed.
  • Great for couples – Bounce from the coils and the motion-isolating capabilities of the foams work well for couples who are sexually active, as well as restless sleepers.
  • Too hard for some – Since the Titan Plus was designed with heavier sleepers in mind, folks on the lighter side may find it too firm for their liking, and may not get a comfortable sink from the surface.
  • Not cradling – This mattress is on the firmer side and has a distinctly hybrid feel. You probably won’t feel very swaddled by the thinner foam layers on top.

Customer Reviews of the Titan Plus

Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars . Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Side View

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is priced similarly to other bed-in-the-box options, it represents a fantastic value in the hybrid market.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Earned Best Orthopedic Mattress for Hot Sleepers

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid has multiple features that keep it cool. First, TitaniumGel™ infused into the TitanFlex™ foam minimizes heat retention. The coil layer also increases airflow, which helps the bed stay breezy. Brooklyn Bedding also provides the option to add a GlacioTex™ cooling cover for extra-hot sleepers.

The Signature Hybrid is also available in three different firmness levels, allowing customers to choose the level of support that best meets their needs. This is particularly important for people with orthopedic concerns, who may require a firmer or softer mattress to properly support their spine and alleviate tension from pressure points.

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Made Of?

The Signature Hybrid mattress from Brooklyn Bedding features a five-layered construction and stands 12.5 inches tall. You can buy it in a Soft, Medium, or Firm feel.

The first two layers beneath the breathable quilted top are proprietary foams: a Supreme Response comfort layer for immediate bounce-back and a VariFlex™ layer to prevent sinkage and transition into the coil layer below. The innerspring unit consists of individually wrapped coils, designed to deliver excellent support for proper spinal alignment. More Ascension® coils line the perimeter for stronger edges.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Construction from the lab

Finally, the base layer is made from high-density foam, which adds durability and even more support to the mattress.

Our Take: “Because [the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid] is so responsive, adjusting positions is super easy. Plus, with the supportive yet comfortable feel, this bed is super versatile for all sleeping positions.” – Emma, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

  • Fair price – A queen Brooklyn Signature Hybrid should only run you about $1,300 before Brooklyn’s frequent sales and coupons.
  • Lifted feel – If you worry about sinking into your bed, this hybrid should keep you aloft. Emma noted that she felt “more on top of the mattress rather than in it.”
  • A little firm – This same lifted feeling can cause trouble for folks on the lighter side, especially if they prefer sleeping on their sides. They might not get the pressure relief they need from this bed.
  • Simply designed – You get everything you need at a high quality and a fair price with the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid, but it’s still a more basic design, especially when compared to other mattresses on this list.

Customer Reviews of the Signature Hybrid

On Brooklyn Bedding’s website , the Brooklyn Signature has 4.7 out of 5 stars . The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

What We Test to Find the Best Orthopedic Mattresses

When you are shopping for an orthopedic mattress, you will want to take note of beds that have been constructed to provide gentle cradling to your joints and spine. These mattresses should also have a sturdy foundation that promotes spinal stability and alignment. Good orthopedic mattresses often combine a supportive base with pressure-relieving foam or latex.

What is an Orthopedic Mattress?

Simply put, an orthopedic mattress is a mattress that addresses orthopedic concerns. So, orthopedic mattresses can come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and there’s no one-size-fits-all option, since every sleeper has different experiences and preferences. Generally, though, these beds will offer a steady balance of softness and support . They should keep your spine in alignment to prevent pressure buildup and pain, while also cushioning joints and other sensitive areas. This can be done with foams, springs, latex, air chambers, or any combination of the four!

Best Orthopedic Mattress Type

From our mattress studio, images of our tested mattresses in different materials

Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses feature a traditional design, constructed with coils that are used to support sleepers, often with thin comfort layers on the top. When it comes to an innerspring mattress that will help with orthopedic aches and pains, those with supportive coils can help keep your spine neutral. However, traditional innerspring beds usually don’t have thicker foam layers to help with pressure relief, which is why they may not be the best choice here.

Hybrid Mattresses

Beds that combine innerspring coils with thick upper layers of memory foam, latex, or poly foam are known as hybrid mattresses . These beds are a great solution for those who like innerspring mattresses but worry about their lack of pressure relief.

If you are looking for an orthopedic hybrid mattress, it is important to find one that has an upper layer that is soft enough to provide pressure relief for your shoulders, hips, and lower back, combined with a base that will promote spinal support.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses are made with a specialized material that contours to your body, providing a cradling, hug-like feel. This offers  excellent pressure relief due to their contouring nature, which can help cushion sensitive joints for those with orthopedic concerns.

It’s also important to make sure that an orthopedic bed not only gives you great pressure relief but also balances this out with support that keeps your spine in a healthy alignment. So make sure those cushy layers are backed up by a dense support core.

Latex Mattresses

Latex mattresses are also great for pressure relief, offering a slightly different feel from memory foam, though. While memory foam is more slow-moving, latex is quick-responding to movement, which is great because this can make it easier to change positions. Both of which should be helpful for folks seeking pain relief from orthopedic issues.

Though latex beds are highly durable, they do come at a higher price point. That said, this durability may be worth it for shoppers who want longevity in their orthopedic bed.

Sleeping Position

Our testers test each sleeping position to make sure each mattress fits the right sleeper

If you are a back sleeper , you’ll want to look at mattresses that are going to evenly distribute your weight, giving you both spinal support and pressure-relieving comfort. With side sleepers , these folks need to make sure they’re looking at beds that excel at pressure relief.

This is because the weight is concentrated in the hip and shoulder when you are lying on your side.

Lead Tester Julia Forbes testing the DreamCloud premier in various sleeping positions

Stomach sleepers need to ensure their mattress keeps their hips level with the rest of their body. If a mattress isn’t supportive enough to do this, they could wind up arching their lower back too much, which could result in pain (or worsen existing pain). Lastly, combination sleepers should look at mattresses that are adaptable for multiple sleep positions for both support and pressure relief, along with beds that foster easier repositioning.

Weight/Body Type of Sleepers

Your body weight is a major consideration when finding the best orthopedic mattress because it can impact how a bed accommodates your needs.

Usually, average-weight people are a great fit for beds with a medium or medium-firm feel, though some folks who are stomach sleepers, for instance, may prefer something slightly firmer. should look for a bed that has a medium to medium-firm feel.

Lightweight sleepers feel beds as more firm because they don’t sink in as much. As such, they are typically better off with soft to medium mattresses, depending on their sleep position. Softer beds allow petite sleepers to still experience quality pressure relief, especially for side sleeping. Heavyweight sleepers , which are considered those above 230 pounds, typically find better comfort on highly supportive, firmer mattresses that help ensure they don’t bottom out.

Support and Firmness

Support refers to how well your body is supported, whereas firmness reflects how soft or hard the bed feels. For great support, you want to check that the bed has a strong support system of either high-density foams or innerspring coils.

As mentioned, side sleepers tend to prefer softer mattresses that provide more gentle support to the shoulder and hip areas. A firmer mattress can put uncomfortable pressure on these regions for side sleepers, especially if you’re lighter in weight.

Stomach and back sleepers often appreciate a more firm and supportive mattress due to how this helps support spinal alignment in these positions. Additionally, heavier people typically like firmer models since they often have more robust support. Having the right mattress firmness is essential for orthopedic concerns, as a bed that’s too firm or too soft will lead to an improperly aligned spine, uncomfortable sinkage, or unwanted pressure buildup.

How do we determine firmness? Most mattress companies provide a firmness rating with their beds, usually from 1-10. In our testing studio, we evaluate and determine a bed’s firmness using our own firmness scale and criteria . On our scale, 1 is as soft as a cloud, and 10 is like sleeping on a rock. Folks generally tend to prefer mattresses in the middle of the range; it’s rare to see a bed that’s at either end of the scale. How firm a mattress feels is a mix of how supportive and pressure-relieving the bed is, alongside personal preference and individual factors–such as your weight and size. We consider all of these before we dub a bed “soft” (3-4), “medium” (5-6), or “firm” (7-8).

What is Spinal Alignment?

You’ve heard us mention it a lot, but spinal alignment is crucial when it comes to orthopedic mattresses. A properly aligned spine is relatively straight , without any egregious dips or lifts that might make it curve at an uncomfortable angle. A mattress that’s too soft or too firm can throw your spine out of alignment and cause pain. So, you want to find a bed that keeps you lifted while also allowing for comfortable sinkage in areas like the shoulders or hips, depending on what sleeping position you prefer.

Cooling

Keeping your body temperature regulated throughout the night may help you sleep better because a lower body temperature can stimulate melatonin production , a hormone that promotes sleep. 1 This is helpful for those with muscle and joint pain because when you sleep well, this reduces your sensitivity to pain . 2

The coils in innerspring and hybrid mattresses and the open cell design of latex are excellent for air circulation. Additionally, many brands include other naturally temperature-regulating materials like cotton or TENCEL™.

Memory foam has a reputation for sleeping hot, but many newer iterations of these beds include gel-infused foam or advanced cooling covers.

Temperature gun testing for BB signature hybrid

How do we test cooling? Pictured above are the temperature guns we use to quantitatively measure a bed’s ability to regulate temperature. We take the bed’s surface temperature at multiple intervals: an initial reading before anyone lies on it, a reading after lying on it for five minutes, and five minutes after someone has laid down on it. The change (or lack thereof) in temperature allows us to have some physical proof beyond our experience. The best cooling beds maintain a temperature within 5 degrees Fahrenheit of the first reading.

Motion Isolation

Couples sharing a bed may be particularly interested in mattresses with motion isolation, even more so if you or your partner deal with orthopedic aches. Motion isolation means that movement on one side of the bed doesn’t make its way over to other areas. If your mattress doesn’t adequately absorb your partner’s movements, not only could it wake you, but it could also exacerbate your discomfort.

Memory foam beds are known for their motion-isolating properties, as well as many hybrids containing memory foam, particularly those that utilize individually wrapped coils.

Those who have orthopedic issues but are still sexually active often find that beds with lots of bounce and responsiveness make intimacy more enjoyable. This is because these beds are able to respond quicker to movement, keeping sleepers from feeling ‘stuck’ in a mattress.

Latex and latex hybrid mattresses can offer great pressure relief and support for orthopedic issues while maintaining great responsiveness for movement during sex.

Pressure Relief and Contouring

Helix Midnight Pressure Map

Another key component when shopping for an orthopedic bed is pressure relief. Orthopedic beds typically provide pressure relief through top comfort layers from materials like memory foam or latex, which can conform the sleeper’s shape to cradle the joints and mitigate pressure buildup. This combination works to safely cushion areas prone to pain.

How do we test for pressure relief? We use what’s called a pressure map to get a super technical reading of pressure buildup. We have our testers in each weight category lie in different positions on top of the mattress, and the map records pressure in each area. It’s color coded to make it easy: blue and green means little to no pressure, whereas red and yellow mean a noticeable amount has built up. We’re able to spot a mattress’s potential weak points with this map and our own experience.

Edge Support

Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid edge support

Orthopedic mattresses often provide good edge support when they’re designed with a strong perimeter, which helps prevent sagging when you sit or sleep near the edge of the bed. Folks with orthopedic concerns may have conditions or pain that makes it harder to get in and out of bed; strong edges also make that an easier process.

Edge support is typically provided by either high-density foams along the perimeter or reinforced coils.

How do we test edge support? We perform two simple tests to determine how strong a bed’s edges feel. First, we’ll have a tester sit and tie their shoes at the edge of the bed. Then, we’ll have them lie down for a minute. In both positions, we’ll be able to gauge the amount of sinkage witnessed, as well as how “secure” we feel near the perimeter of the bed. From there, we can make our judgment about how reliable the edges seem.

Certifications or Endorsements

Some orthopedic mattresses may include certifications from organizations such as CertiPUR-US® or OEKO-TEX®, which indicate that the materials used in the mattress meet strict standards for safety and environmental responsibility. Additionally, endorsements from medical organizations or groups like the American Chiropractic Association may provide additional reassurance for consumers.

Trial and Warranty

The types of warranties that are normally included with an orthopedic mattress vary depending on the manufacturer but typically include a limited warranty ranging from 10-25 years, though some brands offer lifetime deals as well.

Warranties usually cover defects in materials and workmanship. They may also have a prorated period during which the manufacturer will repair or replace the mattress at a reduced cost to the customer. Some warranties may also include specific guarantees related to certain features, such as pressure relief or motion isolation.

Budget

When shopping for a bed on a budget , you want to make sure you’re sacrificing comfort and support for a cheaper price tag. Orthopedic mattresses can be more expensive, but shopping online directly from manufacturers has helped bring down overhead costs we would usually see in traditional brick-and-mortar stores.

Another tip could be to go down a size if possible. For example, couples could purchase a Queen size rather than a King or California King to help them save on a new orthopedic bed. Also, shopping during holiday sales can save you big bucks.

Folks looking for an orthopedic mattress should also consider how long it’s going to last. There’s nothing more annoying than a sagging mattress when you’re trying to sleep pain-free, and the best beds that won’t sag are often those made with high-quality materials. Springs tend to be a good choice as they can bring industrial support. Latex can provide the soothing pressure relief of memory foam without leaving indentations. If you’re set on a foam bed, make sure it’s made of quality foams, has a dense support core, and boasts a long warranty to back up its longevity.

Speak With Your Doctor

Before buying an orthopedic mattress, we suggest discussing your options with your doctor. Everyone’s needs are unique, and they can address any specific medical conditions and talk to you about what might work for your individual needs. Ultimately, you want to ensure that you make an informed decision and invest in a mattress that will promote better sleep and overall health.

What Causes Back and Joint Pain?

Many people are affected with joint and back pain — the latter being one of the most common health issues in the United States. 3

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases points to the following reasons why people develop back and join pain: 3

  • Weight gain and inactive lifestyle – Those who are overweight and don’t exercise regularly are at an increased risk of developing back and joint pain. Extra weight can put stress on the back and a lack of core strength can lead to spinal instability.
  • Heavy lifting – Jobs or activities that require repeated heavy lifting or twisting can cause back and joint pain.
  • Poor posture – If you spend hours working at a desk it may cause bad posture which can lead to back pain.
  • Heredity and age – Back pain and joint pain become more common as you age, particularly after 45. Genetics may also mean that a disorder that causes back pain has been passed down to you.
  • Spinal mechanical/structural problems – Problems with the structure or mechanics of your spine can create back pain. Some of these issues include sprains, herniated discs, fractured vertebrae, scoliosis, and spinal stenosis.
  • Arthritis – Inflammatory conditions such as Ankylosing spondylitis, a specific type of spinal arthritis, can cause back pain. Additionally, other forms of arthritis can create painful joints.
  • Temporary medical conditions – Temporary conditions like pregnancy and kidney stones may cause back and joint pain.
  • Long-term medical conditions – Additionally, long-term medical conditions like endometriosis and fibromyalgia may cause people to feel back and joint pain.

How Can a Mattress Help with Back and Joint Pain?

  • Enhanced support : Orthopedic mattresses can provide enhanced support to the body’s natural curves, reducing the risk of back pain.
  • Alleviate pressure points : These mattresses help to alleviate pressure points, reducing the likelihood of developing painful conditions such as joint pain or arthritis.
  • Better sleep quality : Orthopedic mattresses may improve sleep quality by minimizing pain and discomfort, making it easier to sleep soundly.
  • Long-term use : Orthopedic mattresses are typically made from high-quality materials for better durability and longevity.

Disadvantages of an Orthopedic Mattress

  • Price : Orthopedic mattresses may be more expensive due to the specialized materials and construction required.
  • Break-in period : These mattresses may take some time to break in and become comfortable, especially if they are made from materials such as memory foam.
  • Can be harder to differentiate: Not all mattresses advertised as orthopedic beds are truly orthopedic. Plus, each person’s orthopedic needs can greatly vary, so it’s important to do your research and consult your doctor to help you choose the right bed for your needs.

What Is the Best Sleeping Position for Back and Joint Pain?

Back sleeping .

Sleeping on your back can be an excellent way to alleviate back pain . 4 If this is your preferred way to sleep or if you want to try it for relief, it is best to sleep on a mattress that will keep your spine aligned and still provide some pressure relief.

Using a medium-loft pillow should also ensure a healthy neck alignment with the rest of your spine. Also, placing a pillow under your knees can help ease pressure on your lower back.

Rather than side sleeping in the fetal position with your legs bent up, experts advise keeping your legs straight to more evenly distribute your body weight. 4 Additionally, you can try adding a pillow between your legs when you’re sleeping on your side to further enhance your body alignment.

Combination Sleeping

It can be difficult to find consistent comfort if you’re experiencing back and joint pain, so even if you’re not naturally a combination sleeper, you may find yourself frequently adjusting to get comfortable. Combination sleepers will want a mattress that’s going to give them good support and pressure relief in multiple positions. However, they should also look at responsive beds that will make it easier to reposition during the night so they don’t aggravate their pain.

Stomach Sleeping

Stomach sleeping is considered the worst position to sleep in for pain because of its impact on the spine. 4 This is because it puts a lot of strain on your lower back and neck. However, if you find it difficult to sleep on your back or side, there are measures you can take to improve your posture while on your stomach.

First, ensure you have a firmer mattress that will keep your midsection elevated so your lower back doesn’t curve. Also, use a flat pillow under your head (or no pillow at all) so that you don’t put too much strain on your neck.

Tips for Better Sleeping with Chronic Pain

  • Experiment with different sleep positions : Try different sleep positions such as lying on your back with a pillow under your knees or lying on your side with a pillow between your legs. Find a position that is comfortable and reduces pressure on the affected area.
  • Invest in a supportive mattress and pillow : An orthopedic mattress and pillow can provide the necessary support to keep your spine aligned and reduce pressure on your joints.
  • Incorporate relaxation techniques : Practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or progressive muscle relaxation could help reduce stress and promote relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.
  • Practice good sleep hygiene : Many people can get better sleep by incorporating good sleep hygiene into their daily routine. Good sleep hygiene refers to habits aimed at facilitating better sleep. These can include a regular bedtime and wake-up time, sleeping in a cool, dark, and quiet room, and having a relaxing nightly routine before bed.

Compare Prices of Orthopedic Mattresses

Best orthopedic mattress faqs.

There is no one “best” orthopedic mattress that will work for everyone, as individual preferences and needs can vary greatly. However, some common features to look for in a high-quality orthopedic mattress include specialized materials such as memory foam or latex, zoned support systems, and multi-layer construction. It’s also important to choose a mattress that offers proper spinal alignment, reduces pressure points, and promotes even weight distribution for maximum support and comfort.

The ideal firmness level of an orthopedic mattress will depend on individual preferences and needs, but generally speaking, many orthopedic mattresses have a medium or medium-firm feel that provides a balance of support and pressure relief. However, it’s important to note that firmness is also subjective. For example, one bed may feel firmer to a lightweight person than it would to a heavyweight person.

Doctors may recommend different types of orthopedic mattresses depending on an individual’s specific needs. As such, we advise talking with your primary care doctor, who will have a more thorough understanding of your orthopedic issues, which can help you determine the orthopedic mattress that would be best for you.

Orthopedic mattresses can be made from a variety of materials, but commonly used materials include memory foam, latex, high-density poly foam, and innerspring coils. Many orthopedic beds use a combination of these materials in order to provide better support and overall comfort.

The cost of an orthopedic mattress can vary depending on factors such as the size of the mattress, the materials used, and the brand. On average, a high-quality orthopedic mattress may be around at least 1,000 dollars for a Queen size. While very low-budget beds might seem appealing at first glance, it’s also important to consider the long-term benefits of investing in a high-quality orthopedic mattress, as improved sleep comfort and reduced orthopedic issues can lead to better overall health and well-being.

Orthopedic mattresses can be purchased from a variety of retailers, including mattress stores, department stores, and online retailers. It’s important to do your research and read reviews before purchasing an orthopedic mattress, as the quality and effectiveness can vary depending on the brand and materials used. Additionally, be sure to check the retailer’s return and warranty policies before making a purchase.

Chronic pain is bothersome to deal with, and sleep should be a time for rejuvenation, but that’s not always the case. There’s a chance your pain might be exacerbated by an ill-suited mattress. It’s important to find a bed that works best for you, based on your individual needs and preferences. For folks with orthopedic concerns, find a bed that relieves pressure while keeping you properly supported. If you can’t afford a whole new bed, you can enhance your sleep experience with a mattress topper or invest in pillows that comfortably fit your sleeping position.

Other ways might be to enhance relaxation before bedtime. Try to practice good sleep hygiene : implementing practices like keeping the room dark, cool, and stress-free.

If your pain isn’t helped by your own self-care habits, it’s important to speak with your healthcare provider about other options.

Back Sleeping

Side sleeping, financing options.

Financing options are available for this mattress.

I dreaded paying for a new mattress but my old one was 15 years old…buying a Nectar was the best choice I could have made! It is so comfortable and didn’t cost an arm and a leg. I would absolutely recommend this mattress to anyone!

Expert Opinion

If you struggle with orthopedic pain, you’re going to want a mattress that cushions the joints, but also has enough support to keep your spine in proper alignment. We think the all-foam Nectar should be a good fit for this, thanks to its thick layer of memory foam at the top (which provides plenty of contouring) and its layer of high-density support foam at the bottom (which provides a sturdy foundation). Overall, we rated it a 6 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale — soft, but not too soft.

We run all of our mattresses through a test called the pressure map, where we spread a specialized mat across the bed. We then lie down on it, and the mat uses thermal imaging to create a “map” of our bodies that shows how much pressure is being exerted while we rest. On the Nectar, the map showed primarily blue and green for both back and side sleeping. So we think this should be a fantastic mattress for these sleeping positions (more on that in the Pros section below).

What our tester says: “Memory foam lovers should be happy on the Nectar. This bed has a classic memory foam feel, so there’s lots of sinkage, contouring, and pressure relief. This can be great for anyone with shoulder pain or  hip pain since it gives them cushioning at sensitive pressure points.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

What Customers Say

At the time of this writing, there are nearly 53,000 reviews for the Nectar on the brand’s website, and it has an average customer rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars.

Pr os of the Nectar

  • Side sleepers need pressure relief at the shoulders and hips — the parts of the body where they put the most pressure. A pressure-relieving mattress like the Nectar should give them all the contouring they need.
  • The Nectar’s bottom layer of high-density support foam should help back sleepers maintain a neutral spinal alignment.
  • For a high-quality memory foam mattress, the Nectar is very affordable, with a queen size often available for under $1,000 after discounts.

Cons of the Nectar

  • Larger sleepers over 250 pounds will most likely want a firmer and more supportive mattress.

Best Orthopedic Mattress for Back Pain –   Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid

Saatva memory foam hybrid.

P1054409

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid mattress uses a combination of coils and gel memory foam to provide soft contouring without that "stuck in the bed" feel.

Free white glove delivery

Medium-firm: 6.5/10, stomach sleeping.

With their Memory Foam Hybrid mattress, Saatva created a bed that has a little bit of everything. Up top, two layers of memory foam provide some plushness while keeping cool with infusions of gel. When we lie down on our back, we sink in just enough to get some pressure relief at the lumbar region. At same time, an extra-tall layer of coils at the bottom of the mattress keeps us lifted and supported. Sleepers with back pain should get the support they need to keep a healthy spinal alignment.

To show in real time how this mattress works with our bodies, our team at Sleepopolis put the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid through our pressure map test. This involves spreading a mat across the mattress surface. This mat tracks areas of high and low pressure using our body temperature. On our map, it reflects heavier pressure buildup with red or orange, moderate pressure buildup with yellow, and little to no pressure with green and blue. In the case of the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid, we found overall low pressure (mostly blue and some green) in the back- and side-sleeping positions. While side sleeping, there was a touch of yellow at the shoulder and hip, but we feel that those with joint pain should still be comfortable on this mattress.

What our tester says: “I really enjoyed how this mattress felt laying on my back and side. I was so comfortable and loved the medium-firm feel that had a touch of softness. I think the foam layers offered a contouring feeling while also making me feel supported.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

Folks with back pain and joint pain report that the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid either helped alleviate or completely do away with their discomfort.

Pr os of the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid

  • Combination sleepers should love this bed since the responsiveness makes it easy to change positions.
  • The mattress has a hypoallergenic cover that’s unlikely to activate anyone’s allergies.
  • The bed’s responsiveness makes the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid a good mattress for sex. And for a hybrid, it’s good at isolating motion. You and your partner are unlikely to be woken up by each other’s movements.

Cons of the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid

  • This mattress is probably too soft for strict stomach sleepers. These folks tend to need more support to keep their hips from sinking too far into the bed, which can throw the spine out of alignment.

Best Orthopedic Mattress for Kids –   DreamCloud Premier

Dreamcloud premier mattress.

The DreamCloud Premier in the Sleepopolis studio.

The DreamCloud Premier is a hybrid, bed-in-a-box mattress that feels very luxurious and offers lots of firm support and soft pressure relief. It's a great choice for back sleepers and combination sleepers, who should appreciate its responsiveness.

Hot Sleepers

As kids get older, their bodies constantly change, often resulting in growing pains. The hybrid DreamCloud Premier could be a good sleep remedy to this, as it combines several layers of foam (each with a different density and firmness) with a sturdy layer of individually wrapped coils. Children should get contouring from the top of the mattress, while also getting the stronger support they need from the springs as they grow. Each coil is individually wrapped, allowing them all to move independently and conform to your body. When we laid down on the bed’s surface, we could feel the coils adapting to the curve of our back.

Looking at our pressure map, we saw almost no pressure buildup in the back-sleeping position. This tells us that the DreamCloud Premier should be soft and pressure relieving enough to fill in the lumbar region and consequently ease back pain for many back sleepers. Stomach-sleeping kids should also be comfortable. However, we do think that young side sleepers with back pain will do better on a softer mattress, as they need additional pressure relief to ease the joints, specifically the shoulder and hip.

What our tester says: “I really appreciate that the DreamCloud isolates motion well despite its bounce. That, plus its firm edge support, makes me think most couples will also be fans of this DreamCloud.” – Zoe Ettinger, former Sleepopolis editor and mattress tester

Shoppers report that the shipping time was fast, and any returns came through quickly as well. This is great for those wanting some great customer service, or for those needing a mattress as soon as possible.

Pr os of the DreamCloud Premier

  • The coils leave plenty of space for airflow, and there’s also a soft cashmere-blend cover to help young sleepers stay cool at night.
  • The DreamCloud Premier has exceptional edge support, allowing you to comfortably spread out and sleep near the end of the bed. When paired with the bed’s responsiveness (a key factor for certain sexual activities), this makes the DreamCloud Premier one of the best mattresses for couples .
  • Combination sleepers should have no problem changing their sleeping position on the DreamCloud Premier, mostly due to the responsiveness of the coils.

Cons of the DreamCloud Premier

  • Because of all of the layers, DreamCloud mattresses may often feel heavier to move than other beds.

Helix Midnight Mattress

P1037886

The Helix Midnight has a medium support level and bounce that will appeal to a wide range of sleep preferences. The Midnight also does an exceptional job of isolating motion, making it a great choice for couples that move around at night.

10-year warranty

Side sleepers who struggle with orthopedic pain should seek out a mattress that’s soft enough to relieve tension at their shoulders and hips, but supportive enough to keep their spine neutrally aligned. They should find this delicate balance in the Helix Midnight, a hybrid bed with a slightly softer feel. When we laid down on our side, we got a decent amount of contouring without ever feeling like we were going to sink too far into the mattress’ layers.

While resting on our side on top of the pressure map, we saw mostly blue and green appear on the device, with a bit of yellow at the hip and shoulder. This isn’t exactly surprising, as the hip and shoulder are the most common areas for pressure buildup while side sleeping. From these results, we think that most side sleepers should be comfortable, even folks with hip and shoulder pain. If you have super severe pain issues, it might be worth investing in a mattress topper or selecting a softer mattress.

What our tester says: “I honestly understand why this is the brand’s most popular model. It’s really comfortable and supportive for back and side sleeping. I love that the Helix Midnight offers solid edge support — you can use the whole bed!” –   Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

Lots of folks mention that the Helix Midnight is a great mattress for their back pain. Other customers speak highly of the Helix Midnight’s Luxe version, which includes a pillow top and additional cooling features for a higher price.

Pr os of the Helix Midnight

  • All of Helix’s hybrid mattresses have a lot of airflow due to the layer of coils. If you sleep especially hot, you may want to pay extra for the Helix Midnight Luxe , the bed’s luxury upgrade that includes a soft and breathable Tencel cover.
  • Couples should appreciate the Helix Midnight’s cooling capabilities. The mattress is also good at isolating motion, so partners shouldn’t be woken up by each other’s movements.
  • Like side sleepers, back sleepers should love the Helix Midnight’s blend of comfort and support.

Cons of the Helix Midnight

  • Stomach sleepers usually need a firmer and more supportive mattress to keep their hips from bowing and throwing their spine out of alignment.

Best Orthopedic Innerspring Mattress – WinkBed

Winkbed mattress.

P1065455

The WinkBed is a hybrid mattress that comes in three firmness levels, so most sleepers should find a model that suits their needs. It could also be a good fit for couples, thanks to reinforced edge support.

Multiple firmness options

Absolutely the greatest mattress I've ever slept on. It is soft yet firm in the right spots. Quality is on another level. You get what you pay for.

Innerspring mattresses tend to offer more support than other beds because they have so many coils. When we lie down on the WinkBed, for instance, we get a very “on-top-of-the-bed” feel from its springs. This is key to helping sleepers maintain a neutral spinal alignment, which can help address orthopedic pain throughout the body. The mattress is available in three different firmness levels: Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer. There’s also the WinkBed Plus, which is designed for sleepers over 250 pounds, although it is a bit more expensive.

To take our testing to the next level, we tried out the WinkBed’s edge support. By edge support, we mean the strength of a mattress’s perimeter. A bed with good edge support doesn’t cave in too much while sitting or lying down on the edges. This allows sleepers to maximize the mattress surface area, which is useful for keeping folks supported while sleeping toward the edge of the mattress. We found that the WinkBed has great edge support, as the perimeter of the mattress doesn’t collapse when sit on the end of the bed.

What our tester says: “One of my favorite things about the WinkBed is its durability. This is a high-quality mattress that should really stand the test of time. This is great news for any sleeper.” –   Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

A number of shoppers comment how the process of ordering and receiving this mattress was smooth and efficient. There are several positive notes customers make about WinkBed’s customer service. Representatives seem happy to provide mattress knowledge and seem to be quick to issue refunds.

Pr os of the WinkBed

  • Because there are several different models, there’s a WinkBed for everyone. We recommend the Softer model for side sleepers, Luxury Firm for back sleepers, and Firmer for stomach sleepers.
  • The coils in the WinkBed are extra-tall and leave a lot of room for air to flow through the mattress’s construction.
  • Even the Softer model of the WinkBed has a bouncy and responsive feel, which makes it easy for combo sleepers to change their sleeping position.

Cons of the WinkBed

  • There isn’t a lot of contouring and sinkage on the WinkBed, so if you love that classic feeling of memory foam, you’ll probably want another mattress.

Think the WinkBed is the mattress for you? Click  here  for our best deal or check out our full WinkBed mattress review . Still not sold? Take a look at some of the other  best innerspring mattresses .

Best Orthopedic Mattress for Stomach Sleepers – Saatva

Saatva mattress.

P1051102

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It's a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs.

Innerspring

We were skeptical of buying a mattress on line but it could not have gone any smoother. Anthony answered all of our questions during our many phone conversations. Delivery was prompt and went without a hitch. Best of all the mattress is so comfortable! I haven't had such a good night sleep in years. Highly recommend this.

Of all the sleeping positions, stomach sleepers often have the hardest time finding a comfortable mattress, as they put more pressure on a bed’s layers than side sleepers and back sleepers, and thus require more support. However, they should get what they need on the Saatva, which has two layers of coil for a traditional innerspring feel. When we tested out the bed in the stomach-sleeping position, we felt our hips lifted and aligned with our shoulders — the key for these folks to prevent orthopedic pain.

We should note that the Saatva comes in three different firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. We tested out the Luxury Firm and found it to be a 6.5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, which is the industry standard for medium firm. Stomach sleepers with orthopedic pain might be better off on the Firm model, although they might not get quite as much pressure relief.

What our tester says: “I think a lot of stomach sleepers should be happy on the Luxury Firm model, but I’d recommend trying the Firm model if you’re a strict stomach sleeper. A firm mattress helps keep the hips and shoulders aligned, which is important for avoiding back pain.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

On the Saatva website, there are nearly 3,500 reviews for the brand’s flagship mattress, and it has an average customer rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. 63 of these reviews specifically talk about stomach sleeping, with 57 being perfect five-star ratings.

Pr os of the Saatva

  • Because of the different firmness levels, there’s a Saatva for everyone: side sleepers should opt for the Plush Soft and back sleepers should go for the Luxury Firm.
  • All of the springs in the Saatva give it a bouncy, responsive construction that makes it easy for combination sleepers to switch sleeping positions.
  • The coils also leave plenty of room for airflow in the Saatva, allowing it to sleep cool. This is a plus for hot sleepers.

Cons of the Saatva

  • Although it’s fairly affordable for a luxury mattress, the Saatva is still going to be more expensive than several of the other beds on this list.

Best Orthopedic Mattress for the Money – Nolah Signature

Nolah signature 12" mattress.

nolah signature mattress

The Signature is Nolah’s flagship product, and uses the brand’s proprietary AirFoam™ and high density poly foam to achieve a soft yet supportive feel. It's a great bed for those after cushioning and pressure relief.

Soft: 5.5/10

Even though the Nolah Signature is made entirely of foam, it has four separate layers, all with different functions. For instance, the top layer of foam is designed for cooling and comfort, with each progressive layer getting firmer and firmer. The result is a soft mattress that still has enough support to keep your orthopedic pain from worsening. And despite the dynamic construction — which contains several proprietary materials — a queen size can often be found for under $1,200 after discounts.

When we tested out the Nolah Signature, we scored it a 5.5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, and experienced plenty of contouring, as well as deep pressure relief. This is a plus for anyone who struggles with orthopedic pain, as they’ll want a bed that can adequately cushion their joints.

What our tester says: “I think the Nolah Signature is a  great choice for a lot of back and side sleepers . The sinkage this mattress provides should be a nice match for these sleepers and offer the pressure relief they need.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

Although Nolah doesn’t say exactly how many customer reviews they have on their website, the Signature has an overall average score of 4.8 out of 5 stars. Many testimonials praise how comfortable the bed is for side sleepers.

Pr os of the Nolah Signature

  • Side sleepers should be very comfortable on the Nolah Signature, as the soft foams should give them the contouring they need at the shoulders and hips, where they put the most pressure.
  • It’s also a good fit for back sleepers, as long as they prefer a soft mattress. The firmer foams should help keep their spine sufficiently supported.
  • The top comfort layer of the Nolah Signature is made of AirFoam — Nolah’s more breathable alternative to memory foam. We found that it helped the Signature sleep fairly cool for an all-foam bed.

Cons of the Nolah Signature

  • Stomach sleepers will probably need a mattress that’s firmer and more supportive than the Nolah Signature since they put more pressure on a bed than back sleepers or side sleepers.

Best Orthopedic Mattress for Back Sleepers – Bear Elite Hybrid

Bear elite hybrid mattress.

P1019432 1

The Bear Elite Hybrid is Bear's “ultra-luxurious” model with a traditional mattress feel, plus advanced cooling and support technology. It comes in three different firmness levels: Soft, Medium, and Firm.

Lifetime Warranty

Love it! I absolutely love this mattress and the adjustable frame. It’s helping my back issues so much. I highly recommend this mattress to anyone with back pain

Bear designs their mattresses with athletes in mind, so the brand has a lot of experience with addressing orthopedic pain. We think the Bear Elite Hybrid could be a good match for any back sleepers who struggle with joint and back pain, as the bed has a layer of individually wrapped coils for spinal support and two layers of foam (one of which is zoned) for relief in the lumbar region.

When we tested out the mattress, we got some contouring, along with a slight lift. Also, our pressure map showed all blue, meaning it put almost no pressure on our back whatsoever. We should also note that the bed is available in three different firmness levels: Soft, Medium, and Firm. We recommend Medium for back sleepers, but heavier sleepers might want to test out the firmest version for additional support.

What our tester says: “I honestly like a lot about the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress — starting with how you can choose your firmness level. I tested out the middle level (Medium) and I think it’s great that each sleeper can pick what option works best for them.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

Many combination sleepers found the Bear Elite Hybrid’s feel and firmness to be effective when it comes to changing sleeping positions at night.

Pr os of the Bear Elite Hybrid

  • The Soft model could be comfortable for side sleepers and the Firm model could be comfortable for stomach sleepers.
  • The Bear Elite Hybrid has several advanced cooling features, including phase change material in the cover and an infusion of copper in the foam. The springs also leave plenty of room for airflow.
  • Overall, the Bear Elite Hybrid has a slightly softer feel, but it’s still responsive enough for combination sleepers to be able to switch positions.

Cons of the Bear Elite Hybrid

  • Compared to Bear’s other models, the Elite Hybrid is significantly more expensive. So, it’s not the best option for those wanting a budget mattress.

Best Orthopedic Hybrid Mattress –   Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe

Brooklyn bedding aurora luxe mattress.

P1063217

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a hybrid bed-in-a-box mattress. It comes in three firmness levels and with an optional Cloud Pillow Top, so sleepers can pick the best model for their needs. It also has cooling tech in nearly every layer, which means it sleeps super cool!

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a hybrid mattress, meaning it combines cushioning foams with a support layer of pocketed coils. Overall, we found that the bed had a soft feel. When we tested it out, we felt ourselves sinking into the layers, getting a cuddly hug. We think this contouring could be especially helpful to sleepers who suffer from orthopedic hip and shoulder pain , as they tend to need a lot of pressure relief.

In our mattress lab, we tested the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe’s Medium version. Our pressure map test showed almost entirely blue while we laid on our backs. So, back sleepers with back pain or joint pain should receive plenty of pressure relief. While lying on our side, however, we did notice a bit more pressure buildup. The map showed a tinge of orange at the shoulder, and lots of yellow at the hip. So, while side sleepers who like a firmer feel should be alright, those who have joint pain or want more cushioning should opt for the Soft model.

What our tester says: “My favorite thing about this bed is how cooling it is. Even some of the best soft mattressestend to sleep a little hot because of the snuggly foams they use. The Aurora Luxe really solves this problem with Phase Change Material and breathable pocketed coils.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

Customers are impressed with the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe’s overall value, saying that it’s a supportive, cooling, and high-quality mattress for a reasonable price.

Pr os of the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe

  • The Aurora Luxe is offered in three different firmness levels and with an optional pillow top. So, sleepers of most body types and preferences can pick the best one for their personal sleep needs.
  • Both the cover and the comfort layer are made with phase change material, which is cool to the touch and helps dissipate body heat. The coils also have plenty of room for airflow, further helping make the Aurora a cool-sleeping mattress .
  • Even though this is a soft bed, it should be responsive enough for combination sleepers to change positions.

Cons of the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe

  • Heavy stomach sleepers over 250 pounds will probably need a firmer bed with more support.

What’s an Orthopedic Mattress?

Defined by Merriam-Webster, orthopedics is “a branch of medicine concerned with the correction or prevention of deformities, disorders, or injuries of the skeleton and associated structures (such as tendons and ligaments)” ( 1 ).

So, an orthopedic mattress is simply one designed to alleviate symptoms of those musculoskeletal injuries. The trouble lies in the question: is there a true orthopedic mattress? And while we can’t confirm whether or not there are any reliably certified “official orthopedic mattresses,” there are mattresses we’ve tested that follow guidelines and suggestions approved by our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta .

Orthopedic Mattress vs Normal Mattress

While we can’t endorse any of these beds as official orthopedic mattresses, there are some factors that separate what we consider to be a better mattress for orthopedic issues from a regular mattress. We believe the best orthopedic mattresses, including ones in this roundup, provide additional support for spinal alignment. They also offer sufficient pressure relief for any injuries or sensitive areas. But most importantly, we’ve hand-tested each of these factors in each of the mattresses featured in this roundup at our Sleepopolis mattress lab.

Should You Buy an Orthopedic Mattress?

This may seem like a fairly simple question with an obvious answer: get an orthopedic mattress if you’re having orthopedic issues, right? We’d like to argue that to some extent, everyone should have an orthopedic mattress, or at least one that represents the qualities we like to see in an orthopedic mattress.

Spinal alignment and musculoskeletal health are important for everyone, regardless of age and condition. However, a person with pre-existing issues might want to invest a little more in a mattress to really ensure they’re getting the most durable, best-quality materials. They should also consult with a doctor for guidance on best ways to manage their specific injuries, including recommendations for sleeping positions and additional strategies that may help, such as pillows or braces during sleep.

How to Find the Best Orthopedic Mattress

When shopping for a mattress that can help maximize comfort, keep the following terms and information in mind:

Firmness describes how a mattress feels when you lie down on it. A firmer mattress provides more pushback against the body and has a level sleeping surface. A softer mattress has increased sinkage and a plush feel. A medium-firm mattress offers a balance between pushback and cloud-like conformity. The best firmness level for you will depend on your sleeping position, personal preferences, and the type of orthopedic pain you experience.

How We Rate Firmness

Mattress firmness is rated on a 1 to 10 scale, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. The mattress industry standard for medium firm is 6.5.

Firmness and support refer to different mattress characteristics. Firmness describes the degree of pushback and rigidity of the mattress surface, while support refers to structural features that help keep the spine aligned and the neck in a neutral position. These features typically include steel coils and/or foam layers. A supportive mattress also prevents excessive sinkage or “bottoming out” of the materials under body weight.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief refers to the ability of a mattress to alleviate tension in parts of the body like the shoulders, hips, and lower back. A mattress that provides pressure relief is especially important for people who sleep on their sides or have joint or neck issues. Contouring foam comfort layers can be key to pressure relief, particularly if you suffer from orthopedic pain.

Orthopedic Pain and Sleep Position

Now let’s look at another important part of choosing the right mattress: sleep position. Each sleep position has pros and cons that can impact spinal alignment and affect the health of the joints and spine. Let’s start with the most common of all the sleep positions.

Side sleeping is the most popular sleep position and may occur on either side. Some folks who sleep on their sides lie in a fetal-type position or with one or both legs down.

  • Sleeping on your side can prevent the tongue from falling into the throat, reducing the risk of snoring or obstructive sleep apnea. Left side sleeping can also reduce acid reflux by preventing acid from flowing into the esophagus.
  • Side sleeping can cause shoulder, arm, and/or hip pain due to pressure from the mattress and poor spinal alignment. Pressure on the jaw from sleeping on your side may result in jaw pain.

Mattress firmness is an important factor for side sleepers with orthopedic pain. A medium-soft mattress can provide pressure relief and prevent too much sinking. Larger-bodied folks who sleep on their sides may do best with a medium-firm mattress that prevents excessive sinkage and curvature of the spine.

P1061348

Depending on certain circumstances, sleeping on the back is considered one of the healthiest sleeping positions. Back sleeping may be recommended for people with orthopedic conditions or after certain types of joint surgery.

  • Sleeping on the back keeps the neck and head in a neutral position and aligns the spine. Back sleeping also distributes body weight and minimizes tension on pressure points. Sleeping on the back can reduce pressure on the side and front of the hips, shoulders, and knees.
  • Back sleeping can cause the tongue to fall into the throat and increase the risk of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Also, some people find back sleeping uncomfortable, especially over long periods of time.

The right mattress for back sleepers with orthopedic pain is typically a medium-firm model that cushions the shoulders and hips and prevents gapping between the mattress and lower back. If you weigh more than 250 pounds, you may prefer a firmer mattress that prevents too much sinkage into the comfort layers.

P1064842

Stomach sleeping can put stress on the neck and spine, and is generally considered the least-healthy of the sleep positions.

  • Sleeping on the stomach can keep the tongue from blocking the airway and lower the risk of snoring and sleep apnea. It may also help clear the lungs during respiratory infections.
  • Stomach sleeping can cause poor back alignment and lead to muscle and joint pain.

Stomach sleepers who experience orthopedic pain should consider a firmer mattress to support the spine and reduce sinking of the torso. Heavier stomach sleepers typically feel more comfortable on a very firm mattress that helps to maintain spinal alignment and decrease neck strain.

Mattress Types

Let’s look at the pros and cons of the most common types of mattresses. Most of them can easily be found in stores, online, and as bed-in-a-box models.

Memory Foam

Memory foam is a polyurethane foam that feels plush and conforms to the body. It’s available in a range of firmness options, from soft to extra firm.

  • Memory foam absorbs motion and decreases the transfer of motion between partners who share a bed.
  • It’s responsive to body heat and is known for its ability to relieve pressure on the joints. This can be helpful for folks who suffer from orthopedic pain, particularly side sleepers.
  • Memory foam mattresses are one of the most popular mattress materials and are now one of the most affordable.
  • Memory foam mattresses that don’t include innerspring or pocketed coils may not provide adequate support for folks who weigh more than 250 pounds.
  • Some forms of memory foam retain body heat and make sleeping uncomfortable. This is less likely with newer forms such as those infused with gel and copper.
  • Less edge support can cause sloping or poor spinal alignment for folks who sleep close to the edge of the mattress.

P1038823 1

Latex foam is made from the sap of the rubber tree. Latex is a natural product with a quick response to pressure and a bouncier feel than memory foam.

  • Latex’s open-celled structure makes for natural ventilation and cooler sleeping.
  • The material can be a good choice for people who suffer from orthopedic pain and prefer natural materials
  • The natural buoyancy of latex can be helpful for stomach sleepers, who may sink too deeply into a memory or poly foam mattress.
  • Latex comfort layers may be more supportive than memory or poly foam, and are a great option for heavier sleepers.
  • Latex is a natural material that requires harvesting. As a result, mattresses made from latex may be more expensive than memory or poly foam.
  • Foam made from latex tends to transfer more motion between bed partners than memory foam.
  • Latex doesn’t hug the body like memory foam, and may feel less comfortable to some sufferers of orthopedic pain.

ecosleep luxe

Poly foam is made from polyurethane and has a quick response to pressure. The material is often used to support or complement memory foam or latex.

  • When used in a comfort layer, poly foam can offer pressure relief and cushioning for aching joints and muscles.
  • The material can feel light and breathable, which may be a benefit for hot sleepers.
  • Poly foam is often more affordable than other more durable mattress materials.
  • Less expensive poly foam can degrade quickly.
  • Poly foam may have less of a responsive feel than memory foam, which conforms to the body and cradles joints.

Like an innerspring mattress, a hybrid utilizes a steel coil core for durability and structure, but adds memory foam, poly foam, and/or latex comfort layers for pressure relief and support. Innerspring mattresses are not typically recommended for folks who suffer from orthopedic pain, as they often sleep best on comfort layers that cushion the joints and muscles.

  • Hybrid mattresses contain pocketed coils, which are quieter and transfer less motion than traditional innersprings.
  • The foam comfort layers of a hybrid can offer plush pressure relief for pain sufferers.
  • Hybrid mattresses may be cooler than all-foam models and can be a good choice for folks who sleep warm.
  • The coil structure of a hybrid mattress may transfer motion, making it feel bouncier and disturbing to a bed partner.
  • Hybrid mattresses may be heavier and more difficult to move.
  • Less expensive hybrids may not be as durable as those made from pricier materials such as low-gauge steel coils and cooler memory foams.

Pain and Sleep

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shares specific guidelines for sleep requirements by age. Adults, or people over 18 years old, should be shooting for a minimum of seven hours of sleep each night ( 2 ).

If you’re suffering from pain problems, it makes it all the more difficult to reach these seven hours of restful sleep. And consequently, this lack of sleep can worsen pain. That makes it all the more important to find the right mattress for your sleeping position, body weight, personal preferences, and health needs.

The relationship between pain and sleep is commonly referred to as bi-directional, or even cyclical. As a Neuropsychopharmacology journal in the National Library of Medicine suggests, “Pain can be both a cause and a consequence of sleep deficiency” ( 3 ).

Finding the Best Value Orthopedic Mattress

Average orthopedic mattress price.

Most mattresses are around $1,500 for a queen. However, mattress prices vary widely, as they come in a variety of constructions and with different materials. For a good orthopedic mattress, we recommend ensuring that you purchase a durable mattress that provides the right balance of comfort and support. More sensitive conditions might require a pricier mattress with better materials. So, we’d estimate that an outstanding mattress for orthopedic issues will probably sit around $1,500–$2,000.

The Sleep Doctor’s Review

The Saatva Classic has an innovative design that offers cushioning and support in equal measure. Our testers loved the coil-on-coil design, which provided targeted pressure relief for sore spots along the spine while reinforcing the surface. A Euro-top cover also gives the mattress an extra luxurious feel.

Hot Sleepers

Soft, Medium Firm, Firm Options

Good for Sleepers Under 230 Pounds

  • Pocketed microcoils relieve pressure while adding responsiveness
  • Euro-top cover is quilted with zoned foam to enhance cushioning and comfort
  • Available in two heights and three firmness levels
  • Coils may transfer motion across the mattress surface
  • A $99 return shipping fee is deducted from refunds

The Saatva Classic uses a multi-layered comfort system and pocketed coils to maximize pressure relief. The innerspring model caters to diverse sleepers, as it’s available in three firmness levels: Plush Soft (3), Luxury Firm (6), and Firm (8). Shoppers can also choose between an 11.5- or 14.5-inch profile.

Why We Like It

A 3-inch quilted Euro-top with zoned polyfoam contours to the body, providing good pressure relief. The foam is firmer in the middle of the mattress to promote spinal alignment, and the memory foam lumbar pad is intended to alleviate tension in the lower back. Our testers found that the layer of pocketed microcoils contoured to the body, which increased pressure relief and support.

How Does It Feel?

The zoned support core uses recycled steel coils, giving the mattress bounce and stability. The pocketed springs prevent excessive motion from transferring across the bed. We also noticed that the high-density polyfoam rails minimized sagging at the edges. Our testers found that the mattress regulated temperature well, thanks to continuous airflow in the coiled core. Additionally, off-gassing smells were minimal and dissipated quickly.

Best Value Mattress

Plank firm luxe.

The Plank Firm Luxe has a competitive price-point and a flippable design allowing you to choose from two firmnesses in one mattress. Measuring at a firm (7) on one side and an extra firm (9) on the other, the mattress is one of the firmest in our testing lab.

Heavy Sleepers

Firm, Extra Firm Sides

Good for Sleepers Over 230 Pounds

  • Flippable model with two distinct firmness levels
  • Robust edges provide more uniform and dependable support
  • Optional add-on cooling panel
  • Can feel too firm for many side sleepers
  • People with sharp pressure points may prefer a mattress with more cushioning

The Plank Firm Luxe is a flippable model with two supportive surfaces: firm (7) and extra firm (9). Both sides feature a quilted cotton-microfiber blend cover and a layer of polyfoam. We found that the upper comfort layer cradled pressure points and prevented the firm surfaces from feeling too rigid.

Each side uses the same layout to help align the spine and keep sleepers on top of the mattress. A 2-inch layer of high-density polyfoam contours the body and prevents the midsection from sinking too deeply into the mattress. Denser foam on the extra firm side doesn’t conform much, which appealed to our testers who enjoy sleeping on rather than in a mattress. The firm side uses 1 inch of TitanFlex comfort foam, providing slightly more contouring.

The core features 6 inches of pocketed coils that increase responsiveness and allow for easier movement. Each coil is individually wrapped to promote airflow and reduce motion transfer. The mattress has a 13.25-inch profile, which is considered high-profile. Our tests showed that the mattress did a good job of regulating temperature. However, if you’re prone to overheating, you can opt for a cooling cover made from phase change material. The add-on layer is engineered to absorb and release heat from the body.

Best Mattress for Side Sleepers

Helix midnight.

The Helix Midnight is one of our test team’s favorite models when it comes to balancing support and cushioning. The gentle cradling and sturdy coils make it a great fit for side sleepers in particular.

Combination Sleepers

Medium Firm

Sturdy coils offer lumbar support

  • Foam layers conform to your body for excellent pressure relief
  • Hot sleepers can upgrade with a specialized cooling cover
  • Balanced medium firm (6) feel
  • Sleepers who are sensitive to smell may notice off-gassing odors right after unboxing
  • May lack firmness for some sleepers over 230 pounds

The Helix Midnight pairs foam layers with a supportive coil system to provide a just-right mix of plushness and support — especially for people who sleep on their side and experience uncomfortable pressure buildup at night.

The foam layers on top excel at cradling your shoulders and hips without sacrificing too much support, which benefited many of the side sleepers on our team — especially those between 130 and 230 pounds. The thick coil core didn’t skimp on support for the lower back, which helped keep the spine nicely aligned.

The Helix Midnight has a medium firm (6) feel with a plush surface that conforms closely to your body. Most side sleepers on our team never felt excessively “hugged” by the mattress, although those over 230 pounds will sink deeper and likely won’t receive enough support to stay comfortable. The bed stayed fairly temperature-neutral thanks to airflow through the coils. However, if overheating is a concern, you can pay a little extra for a cover infused with phase change material meant to keep the surface cool.

Most Comfortable Mattress

Winkbeds gravitylux.

Foam mattresses often earn high ratings from our side sleepers, and the WinkBeds GravityLux is no exception. Our side-sleeping testers noted excellent cushioning for sore spots in their hips and shoulders, while the zoned high-density polyfoam prevented them from sinking too deeply into the mattress.

Side Sleepers

Medium Soft, Medium, Firm Options

Good for Sleepers Under 130 Pounds

  • Zoned polyfoam core provides extra support for the lumbar region
  • AirCell memory foam is engineered to dissipate heat for cooler sleep
  • Choice of three firmness options
  • Stomach sleepers may find their midsection sinks too deeply into the mattress
  • Contouring foam can limit ease of movement

The WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress uses seven foam layers to strike a balance between cushioning and support that works particularly well for side sleepers. Dynamic memory foam cradles the body to alleviate tension, while zoned polyfoam helps promote good spine alignment.

The heat-wicking Tencel cover is tufted with 2 inches of gel-infused polyfoam for extra padding. The AirCell memory foam below is designed to closely contour the body without trapping too much heat. We found that the close hug was especially beneficial to our side-sleeping testers who needed extra cushioning around the hips and shoulders. The support core uses zoned polyfoam to deliver variable support. The back and hips receive greater push-back, while the shoulders and legs receive more cushioning. A layer of high-density polyfoam prevents sagging by reinforcing the upper layers.

Our testing showed that the GravityLux is more durable than the typical foam model, making premature impressions less likely to form. The GravityLux has very good motion isolation, which results in fewer nighttime disturbances for anyone who shares a bed. The mattress also regulates temperature well, thanks to its use of gel infusions and open-cell memory foam.

Best Mattress for Back Pain

Bear elite hybrid.

Sleepers with persistent back pain often benefit from a mattress with a balance of cushioning for the spine and support to maintain healthy sleep posture. The Bear Elite Hybrid’s foam hybrid construction is a great example of this balance, and three firmness options ensure a comfortable model for most sleepers.

Back Sleepers

Medium, Medium Firm, Firm Options

Supportive For All Sleepers

  • Breathable cover with specialty Celliant fabric is designed to facilitate both cooling and muscle recovery
  • Adaptive memory foam accommodates sharp pressure points
  • Transitional layer of zoned polyfoam prevents excessive sinkage
  • Mattress height may require a fitted sheet with extra-deep pockets
  • May lack responsiveness for sleepers who want a bouncier mattress

Sleepers who experience sharp pain in their upper or lower back benefit from a mattress that balances cushioning for the spine with a robust support system. The Bear Elite Hybrid achieves that balance with an adaptive foam comfort system, while a coil system and zoned transitional layer keep your body on an even plane.

The Elite Hybrid’s comfort system begins with a layer of adaptive memory foam that contours to your body to relieve pressure. The foam is also infused with copper gel intended to conduct and dissipate heat away from the surface. Underneath is a polyfoam transitional layer that acts as a buffer between your body and the coil system. This layer is strategically zoned to provide targeted support to heavier areas of your body, like your hips and shoulders, and cradle lighter areas. Pocketed coils in the support core reinforce the sleep surface to keep your body on an even plane. The coils rest on a polyfoam base layer to prevent shifting. A breathable cover made from a Celliant and polyester blend fabric encases the mattress. Celliant is engineered to react to your body heat and confer it back to you in the form of infrared energy, which is thought to promote muscle recovery.

The Elite Hybrid comes in three firmness levels: medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (7). Every model earned high marks from our side- and back-sleeping testers. People who use these sleep positions and weigh less than 130 pounds will likely prefer the softest model. Our testers weighing up to 230 pounds enjoyed the medium firm option, and our testers weighing more than 230 pounds enjoyed the firmest model. Temperature regulation was one of the Elite Hybrid’s clear strengths during testing. Our heat guns detected minimal heat buildup on the surface thanks to the breathable cover and steady airflow through the coils. The foam comfort system also absorbed most movement transfer and noise during our tests, making it a great option if you share the bed with a restless sleep partner.

Best Mattress for Pressure Relief

Puffy lux hybrid.

The Puffy Lux Hybrid delivers strong contouring to alleviate pressure buildup. Meanwhile, a supportive coil system helps you maintain spinal alignment to prevent aches and pains in the morning. These features appealed to our side sleepers and testers with persistent joint or lower back pain.

  • Hybrid design with coils and foam enables standout pressure relief
  • Climate Comfort foam engineered to dissipate heat and moisture
  • Soft, stain-resistant cover made with organic cotton
  • Back and stomach sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds may find the mattress too soft
  • Only available in one firmness option

Sleepers with sharp pressure points often need a mattress that delivers strong contouring. Puffy’s Lux Hybrid uses plush foam layers adapt to the body to alleviate pressure buildup. The mattress’ 12-inch profile and medium (5) feel accommodate a range of sleep styles and body types.

The Lux Hybrid has a GOTS-certified organic fabric cover that resists stains and common allergens. The comfort system uses two types of memory foam to help ease pressure points. A 1.5-inch layer of proprietary Cooling Cloud memory foam is designed to cradle sleepers without generating too much heat. A layer of polyfoam increases compression support, so the mattress doesn’t contour too closely to the sleeper’s body. Additionally, the proprietary memory foam layer is intended to draw out heat and moisture.

Six inches of hefty steel coils stabilize the mattress. The core is designed to adapt to your body for better weight distribution, while individually wrapped coils reduce motion transfer and improve air circulation. High-density polyfoam reinforces the perimeter to help you feel supported throughout the mattress, and an anti-slip base cover keeps the bed firmly in place. Our tests showed that the hybrid performed particularly well for people under 130 pounds, regardless of sleep position. The combination of solid edge support, motion isolation, and temperature control should also benefit couples. However, the mattress’ contouring might be excessive for back and stomach sleepers over 230 pounds, who usually need a firmer surface to align the spine.

What’s an Orthopedic Mattress?

An orthopedic mattress is constructed to boost support for the joints and spine. The materials layered in an orthopedic mattress are designed to work together to relieve pressure and enhance comfort.

In medicine, orthopedics deals with problems affecting the musculoskeletal system, which includes muscles, bones, joints, and connective tissue. An orthopedic mattress is intended to prevent or minimize aches, pains, and other discomfort in this system of the body.

A heightened focus on cushioning, support, and pressure relief distinguishes orthopedic mattresses from standard mattresses.

With this focus, orthopedic mattresses are often best for people with joint and back pain or other musculoskeletal conditions. This includes many older adults and people who have had injuries in the past. Orthopedic mattresses are also popular among athletes who prioritize good sleep as part of their physical recovery.

Unfortunately, there are no official certifications or agreed upon standards for orthopedic mattresses. As a result, manufacturers may label a mattress as orthopedic for marketing purposes even if it lacks materials or features designed to enhance support.

What to Look For in an Orthopedic Mattress

It can be hard to differentiate between all your mattress options, including the many models of orthopedic mattresses. Knowing where to focus your attention can help you choose the best fit for your needs.

Mattress Type

Orthopedic mattresses can be built with a range of materials. Based on their interior construction, mattresses can be categorized into different types .

In a foam mattress, all the layers are made of either polyfoam or memory foam. Foam is a popular material in orthopedic mattresses because of its ability to contour to the body and relieve pressure.

Hybrid mattresses feature top layers of foam, latex, or microcoils above a base layer of metal coils. With their blend of materials, hybrids typically provide solid all-around performance that delivers significant support to the entire body.

Like hybrids, innerspring mattresses have a core of metal coils. But innersprings have few additional layers, which reduces their cushioning and generally prevents them from being orthopedic mattresses.

Every layer in a latex mattress is made with latex rubber. In most cases, this is natural latex that is bouncy, sturdy, and lightly contours to the body. The ability to relieve pressure without excess sinkage can make latex mattresses effective in providing orthopedic support.

Airbeds are unique because their support core is made with air chambers that can be inflated or deflated to adjust the firmness level. Some airbeds have foam or latex on top of these chambers. Real-time firmness modifications provide flexibility to find optimal support.

The majority of orthopedic mattresses have a firmness level ranging from medium (5) to firm (7) because this amount of firmness generally provides the best combination of cushioning and support.

If a mattress is too soft, it can cause the body to sink into the bed, jeopardizing sleep posture and pulling the spine out of alignment. If a mattress is too firm, it can create impact and irritation around joints and other pressure points.

Finding the ideal balance depends on your body weight and sleeping position. Your personal comfort preferences are also a factor, which is why there is no one “right” firmness level for everyone.

Video: Are Firm Mattresses Good for You?

Watch our video to learn more about whether a firm mattress is best for you.

Support from a mattress refers to its ability to help keep your spine properly aligned. This means that your spine stays in a neutral position rather than excessively bending or twisting.

Orthopedic mattresses prioritize support because spinal misalignment can cause aches and pains . Solid support typically requires enough cushioning to soften impact at pressure points along with sufficient firmness to keep heavier parts of the body from sinking too deeply into the mattress.

Pain Relief

Having the right mattress can help prevent or alleviate certain types of pain. While body pain can have many causes, it can be related to a sleep posture that puts stress on joints and muscles. Orthopedic mattresses are designed to improve sleep posture with effective cushioning and support.

Price, Sleep Trial, and Warranty

Mattresses have a wide price range from as low as $300 to over $2,000. How much you’ll pay depends on how a mattress is built, whether it has special materials or features, and whether you can take advantage of any deals or discounts.

If you’re worried about buying a mattress you don’t like, you can get peace of mind with a sleep trial. During the trial, you can return the mattress for a refund. You can expect a sleep trial of 100 nights or more for most mattresses purchased online.

For longer-term purchase protection, a mattress warranty entitles you to repairs or a replacement if your mattress is defective. Mattress warranties often last for 10 years or longer, but they do not cover standard wear and tear.

Is an Orthopedic Mattress Right for You?

An orthopedic mattress may be right for you if you want to improve your sleep posture, struggle with aches and pains, or participate in athletics or physically demanding work. You may also want an orthopedic mattress if you find that you’re unsatisfied with the comfort and support of your existing mattress.

An orthopedic mattress may not be a good fit if you prefer an extra firm bed, have a very limited budget, or are already getting high-quality sleep with your existing mattress.

Frequently Asked Questions

An orthopedic mattress is built to accommodate the joints and spine and, in the process, provide support to the entire body. With added cushioning and pressure relief, an orthopedic mattress is intended to encourage a healthy sleep posture that reduces aches and pains.

Orthopedic mattresses are often worth the investment for people who have bothersome pain in the shoulders, hips, knees, or lower back . These mattresses can also be a great choice for older adults, athletes, or people who work in physically demanding jobs.  For many sleepers, the right orthopedic mattress may prevent or minimize discomfort and make it easier to consistently get a good night’s sleep.

Most orthopedic mattresses range from medium (5) to firm (7), but the best firmness level for an orthopedic mattress depends on your physical needs, body weight, and sleeping position .  Side sleepers, who have major pressure points at their hips and shoulders, often need a mattress with more cushioning. Back and stomach sleepers and people over 230 pounds generally get better support from a firmer mattress.

You can buy an orthopedic mattress online or in a brick-and-mortar department store or mattress showroom. Buying online offers a wider selection and competitive prices. Most online mattresses also come with a sleep trial and free returns, which can be especially helpful in making sure that an orthopedic mattress properly cushions your joints and supports your body.

What Is an Orthopedic Mattress?

An orthopedic mattress is a type of mattress that’s meant to offer extra spinal support and a touch of pressure relief for the back and joints, thereby reducing aches and pains. The term “orthopedic mattress” was coined in the 1950s after studies examining joint and bone function suggested that specially designed mattresses might help prevent morning back pain. The earliest orthopedic mattresses were indeed designed to adhere to orthopedic principles that could be therapeutic for achy backs.

man sleeping on his back on the Saatva mattress

But then the mattresses started selling well, and the term “orthopedic” was co-opted by mattress manufacturers and marketers looking to cash in on the popularity of orthopedic mattresses — regardless of whether their beds were expressly designed to soothe back pain. Because there are no government regulations regarding the language that mattress manufacturers use to describe their products, the term “orthopedic mattress” has been diluted over the years.

None of this is to say that the concept of orthopedic mattresses is worthless. It just means that you need to do your research carefully . While some mattresses wrongly claim to be orthopedic in nature, there are others that will live up to the “orthopedic” claim. In fact, you’ve just read about nine of them in this roundup.

Why Use an Orthopedic Mattress?

Now that you know how orthopedic mattresses originated, you can probably guess why someone might use one of these beds.

Orthopedic mattresses are most commonly used by people who suffer from back and/or joint pain and are looking for a bed that will ease those aches to help them obtain better-quality sleep. This includes sleepers who suffer from chronic pain conditions such as arthritis, as well as people recovering from injuries or accidents, seniors, folks who have undergone surgery, and active people who need extra support for recovering properly post-exertion.

What Are the Benefits of an Orthopedic Mattress?

As noted above, not all so-called “orthopedic mattresses” are created equal. But when you find a mattress that’s truly designed with orthopedic principles in mind that suits your personal sleep position(s) and needs, then you’re likely to enjoy several benefits. For instance, an orthopedic mattress can:

  • Provide great support
  • Promote proper spinal alignment
  • Help you feel more comfortable in bed, which can facilitate quality sleep
  • Relieve pressure around joints, thereby minimizing pain
  • Facilitate recovery from injuries, surgery, and physical exertion
  • Provide lasting support (for approximately 7 to 10 years), thanks to the use of durable and high-quality materials

What Are the Cons of an Orthopedic Mattress?

Even though there are several benefits to using an orthopedic mattress, these beds aren’t without their downsides. For example:

  • Because of lax regulations, it can be difficult to determine whether a mattress that claims to be orthopedic will actually live up to its claims.
  • Orthopedic mattresses are sometimes more expensive than mattresses that don’t claim to have an orthopedic design.
  • Because orthopedic mattresses are often on the firmer side, they might not always feel comfortable to side sleepers, who need extra pressure relief around the shoulder and hip.

How to Choose the Best Orthopedic Mattress

When it comes to the best orthopedic mattress, there’s no such thing as one size fits all. Instead, the best mattress for you will come down to a number of personalized factors. Above all? Comfort reigns supreme . If you’re not comfortable on a bed, then it’s highly unlikely it will help you sleep well.

While we can’t tell you which mattress to buy, we can equip you with some guidelines that will significantly up your chances of landing on a mattress that helps relieve pain and promote restful sleep:

  • Spinal support and firmness: A bed that promotes proper spinal alignment will go a long way in relieving back pain, because it will support the natural curve of the spine and reduce strain on muscles, tendons, and bones. As a general rule, most people find the proper balance of support and comfort on a medium-firm mattress (though again, there’s some variation here; for instance, heavier-weight folks might prefer the added support of a firmer mattress). A bed that’s too soft can allow the spine to sag, while a bed that’s too firm might not provide enough pressure relief alongside spinal support.
  • Pressure relief:  While spinal support is a crucial component of any orthopedic mattress worth its salt, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. That support needs to be balanced with pressure relief so pressure doesn’t build up around the joints during the night. The bed should have some give so as to minimize the risk of provoking joint pain. This is especially true for side sleepers.
  • Edge support:  If your pain issues make it challenging to climb in and out of bed, then it’s a good idea to look for a mattress with strong edge support. This will ensure the edge of the mattress doesn’t collapse underneath you when you’re using it for support while sitting, standing, or lying down.
  • Certifications: Since the mattress industry is rather unregulated, you might want to look for certifications or other marks of approval from medical experts or organizations, such as the American Chiropractic Association.
  • Medical input: It can be helpful to consult a doctor, physical therapist, or other medical expert about the best sleeping position(s) and mattress for your condition. They might be able to advise an ideal mattress firmness or the use of props that could further minimize pain (such as placing a pillow between your legs while side sleeping).
  • Company policies:  Finding a comfortable mattress is important for everyone, but it’s especially necessary for anyone who suffers from back or joint pain. For this reason, it can be helpful to look for mattresses with generous sleep trials and return policies, so you can test the mattress out in the comfort of your home and easily return it if it’s not a good fit.
  • Budget: No matter what kind of mattress you’re looking for, it’s always important to keep your budget in mind. Determining a comfortable budget at the start of your mattress search will allow you to eliminate some options right off the bat.

The Best Mattress Type for Orthopedic Mattresses

Orthopedic mattresses can take many forms, and no mattress type is inherently better than another. As always, the best orthopedic mattress type varies by person and comes down to your body, sleep position(s), and preferences. That said, here are a few guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Memory foam mattresses tends to offer exceptional pressure relief, but it doesn’t always support spinal alignment. If you’re interested in a memory foam bed, look for options that balance pressure relief with spinal support, perhaps with the use of firmer foams underneath the comfort layer.
  • Innerspring mattresses are generally quite supportive, but they don’t always offer a ton of pressure relief. If you like the feel of innerspring beds, consider looking for an option with a plush pillow-top or other pressure-relieving comfort layer.
  • Hybrid mattresses often offer the best of both spinal support and pressure relief, thanks to the use of supportive coils in the support layer and pressure-relieving foams in the top layers. Note that each hybrid mattress is different, so review materials and design features closely.
  • Latex mattresses are very durable and generally offer a supportive and responsive sleeping surface, along with a touch (though not a ton) of pressure relief.

How Do Back and Joint Pain Affect Sleep?

Why is an orthopedic mattress useful for people who are dealing with pain? Because there’s a strong link between pain and sleep deprivation.

One study of 1,941 patients found that people suffering from lower back pain commonly reported sleep disturbances. More generally, chronic pain is known to prevent sound sleep. For instance, chronic pain might shorten the amount of time spent asleep , disrupt crucial REM sleep cycles, or provoke stress or anxiety that makes it harder to drift off.

The relationship between pain and sleep quality is a two-way street. In a nasty cycle, poor sleep can exacerbate pain during the day. This could be because low sleep quality is linked to higher levels of inflammation , which can cause pain flare-ups. This intensified pain can then make it harder to fall and stay asleep at night.

How to Sleep Better with Back or Joint Pain

Once you’ve secured a comfortable and supportive mattress, there are several other steps you can take to increase your chances of sleeping better in spite of back or joint pain.

  • Pick your pillow carefully:  While the mattress you sleep on will have the biggest impact on your comfort, don’t overlook the importance of pillows. The best pillow for you will ensure that your head and neck stay aligned with your spine in your chosen sleep position. Consider a feather or memory foam pillow to enjoy some contouring and pressure relief around your head and neck.
  • Manage pain outside of the bedroom:  Taking steps to manage pain during the day will decrease the chances of pain keeping you up at night. Effective pain management strategies include regular exercise, stretching, physical therapy, and over-the-counter or prescription medications. Work with a medical professional to determine the best pain management plan for your condition.
  • Get a move on:  Regular exercise has been shown to ease pain and stiffness , relieve the stress and anxiety that can accompany chronic pain conditions, and make it easier to fall asleep at night. Consider gentle, low-impact exercises such as walking, yoga, swimming, aqua aerobics, and so on. Pay special attention to developing core strength , as this can help relieve back pain.
  • Practice relaxation techniques:  As noted above, painful conditions often provoke anxiety , depression, and other mental health challenges. It’s just as important to treat these conditions as it is to address physical pain. To that end, consider incorporating soothing activities into your daily routines, such as journaling, breath work, listening to music, meditating, and talking with a therapist.
  • Adopt sound sleep hygiene habits: This is important for everyone — not just folks who are managing pain. Sound sleep hygiene includes a variety of behaviors such as falling asleep and waking up at the same time every day, keeping electronics out of the bedroom, avoiding electronics for the hour before bed, restricting bedroom activities to sleep and sex, avoiding caffeine in the evening, and making your bedroom environment cool, dark, and quiet.

What’s the Best Sleeping Position for Back or Joint Pain?

Although there’s no one-size-fits-all sleeping position to prevent back and joint pain, many people derive pain relief from back-sleeping. According to the Cleveland Clinic , this position is actually optimal for most sleepers. That’s because back-sleeping evenly distributes your weight across the entire body, which helps support proper alignment and minimizes pressure that can lead to pain. If you’re not already a back sleeper, consider giving this position a try.

A man sleeps on the Helix Midnight mattress.

If back-sleeping isn’t an option for you, there are steps you can take to optimize side or stomach sleeping. For instance, per the Cleveland Clinic, side sleepers can make this position easier on the spine by switching from side to side (either during each night or from night to night). This way, they don’t create uneven pressure and strain on their body. If you’re a side sleeper, you can also try placing a pillow between your knees to help promote straight alignment between the hips, pelvis, and spine.

Meanwhile, stomach sleepers will benefit from paying careful attention to their pillow . Look for a thinner option that allows your head to remain aligned with your spine in this position. If your hips tend to sag, it might also be helpful to tuck a small pillow under them so they stay elevated and aligned with the spine.
