Where to find sea glass in Delaware and how to celebrate these coastal treasures

saputara visit in summer

If you ever stumble upon a smooth piece of colored rock when shell-searching at the beaches, you may have discovered some sea glass.

The trash-to-treasure beach find has collected quite a following among crafters and beachcombers and there are entire festivals and shops revolved around local sea glass happening this summer.

Spring and summer storms can contribute to more of these colorful trash-turned-treasures washing ashore.

While artists like to use sea glass from the Delaware Beaches, it can be hard to come across if you don’t know where to look or what you’re looking for.

Here’s how to find your own sea glass this summer at the beaches.

What is sea glass?

Sea glass, sometimes called “mermaid’s tears,'' is nearly exactly what the name implies: glass that has been exposed to the conditions of the sea. What starts as pieces of broken glass is tumbled through the ocean’s currents and smoothed in the process. Its “frosty” appearance is due to the saltwater.

According to research published in the "Sea Glass Journal,'' most pieces of sea glass take around 15to 20 years of weathering to get their distinct look and shape.

Glass can enter the sea in many different ways: through shipwrecks, accidents or littering. Sea glass is considered litter by most beaches, and is encouraged to be removed from the shores by people who find them.

Where can I find sea glass?

The shores of any saltwater beach will be a good place to search for this treasure. Although sea glass sometimes can blend in with other shells and rocks, there are a few distinct features that make it stand out.

Look for slightly different colored shards, usually with softer edges and an ashy or chalky finish.

The most common colors of glass to find on beaches are white, brown and emerald green. These colors usually indicate that the original glass source was ordinary beer bottles or household jars.

More uncommon colors like blue, olive green and amber usually are considered to originate from medicine bottles, soda bottles or old cosmetic jars. Other rare colors like black, lime green or pink come from perfume bottles and various other knickknacks that would be found on ships.

Woodland Beach, located outside of Smyrna off the Delaware Bay, has been reported as a good destination to find sea glass,

Cape Henlopen, Pickering Beach and aptly named Big Stone Beach also have been flagged as good spots to find some sea glass, but typically any shore with salt water could potentially have sea glass.

Beachcombers recommend that people interested in finding sea glass look on rocky beaches because the rocks help weather the glass and keep them from being swept back out to sea. Additionally, it's best to wait for low tide when more of the shore is exposed. This will give you a better surface area of places to look.

Sea glass crafts

Sea glass is often used for custom jewelry and decorative purposes. There are many boutiques around the Delaware beaches that use sea glass as their medium for crafts and souvenirs.

Pieces can be strung together and used for necklaces, glued onto dishes and frames, boxes and plenty of other crafts.

After moving to Slaughter Beach from New Jersey, Pat Catanzariti was inspired by the sea glass on Delaware’s beaches and decided to use it as a creative medium.

Catanzariti and their wife started Sea Screens LLC, using sea glass to create framed artwork. Customers can even select their own pieces of sea glass from the shop’s collection, which they use to customize a design.

Old harbor with a wooden fishing boat docked in Cefalu, Sicily, Italy

Picture it — Sicily, this coming August.

Sure, the island’s dramatic coastline will be perfect for swimming and sunbathing, but you’ll be sharing some pretty tight real estate with half of Europe, too.

Fast forward a few weeks, and the weather is almost nearly as hot and sunny, with a daily average of 80 degrees, but you won’t have to defend yourself against an army of pasty northern European invaders.

Young woman walking from airport terminal to airplane, indicating increasing popularity of fall travel

Welcome to travel’s famous “shoulder season” — you’ll love it here.

In fact, a growing number of travelers to Europe are rearranging their vacation calendars in order to sit out the crowding and heat waves of summer, waiting patiently for some time in the sun, with less of the insanity — not to mention lower prices — during September and October.

But don’t wait to try the quieter months out for yourself — travel industry experts say the delayed gratification approach has become so popular, the very notion of summer being the peak travel period, at least in some destinations, could be past its sell by date.

Tour operators are noting an uptick in interest not only in the fall, but also from March through early May, The Guardian reported.

Young woman in international airport checking her flight on the information board while holding her passport

Intrepid Travel, an adventure travel company, reported a 61% increase in shoulder season reservations to western Europe last year, leading them to increase the number of departures during those periods by as much as 47% in some countries.

The company called out the continent’s increasingly hot summer weather as a reason for the shift — in fact, the ramping up in spring and fall comes as interest in July and August hiking trips has plummeted, leading to Spain and Portugal being dropped from the schedule entirely during those months.

They’ve also dramatically cut back their programming in Greece, where the earliest heatwave ever recorded scorched the country in June with temperatures of 100 for more than three days running.

People are no longer “willing to travel while a heatwave is raging in Europe,” said Raph Giacardi, an editor at HolidayPirates, in an interview with The Guardian.

Back view of a female tourist checking flight schedules on an information board.

“To avoid extreme heat, we may see more holiday makers take advantage of traveling to European destinations during shoulder season in September and October, when temperatures are still warm but more comfortable and there are much better deals on flights, hotels and package holidays. Not to mention that crowds are usually much smaller too,” Giacardi said.

Last month, a report on travel trends from Mastercard Economics Institute showed an increase in shoulder season travel to Europe of about 1.8% over the past decade, with popular beach destinations like Croatia in the lead, shift-wise. Countries like Sweden , which can boast beautiful fall colors in season, also registered changes.

“This suggests it’s more than just hotter summers driving this change,” the authors noted. “Two major demographic shifts are likely also at play: more retirees who are free from work obligations, and more households without children that are free from school calendars.”

Good morning, and welcome to the Essential California newsletter . It’s Saturday, June 22 . Here’s what you need to know to start your weekend:

You're reading the Essential California newsletter

Our reporters guide you through the most important news, features and recommendations of the day.

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.

Things to do around L.A. this summer

  • Post fire becomes California’s largest wildfire of the year
  • Seven delicious Jamaican patties for a taste of the island in L.A.
  • And here’s today’s e-newspaper

The first day of summer was Thursday. Hello, more sunshine and warmer temperatures.

Those cool nights with 50-something degree temperatures will soon be a thing of the past. Get ready for highs in the mid- to high 80s during the day and lows in the mid- to high 60s at night.

Warmer weather makes me want to sit in front of my portable air conditioner every day until it cools down again. But that’s not realistic or economical, so I’ll find activities to do around L.A. instead.

Lucky for us Angelenos, my colleague Christopher Reynolds put together a list of 24 things to do around L.A. this summer . They’re outdoorsy and indoorsy, free and pricey, old and new, and all in L.A. or within easy day-trip reach.

Here are five highlights from Christopher’s roundup:

Paddle a swan boat in Echo Park Lake

A worker hoses off swan boats on a lake

Beat the heat with a soothing ride on a swan boat at Echo Park . The swans are powered by foot paddles but the pedaling is easy because you’re at a leisurely pace. You can either ride during the day by doing a circuit of the lake or ride at night when the swans light up.

The small boats can seat two adults and two children under age 10. Larger boats can seat up to five people. Hours are 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily through Sept. 2 and rentals are $12 hourly per adult, $7 for those under age 18.

Behold the universe, or the skyline, from Griffith Observatory

A view of the Griffith Observatory with Downtown Los Angeles in the background

Take a hike or drive up to Griffith Observatory — the architectural star of 4,210-acre Griffith Park — one of L.A.’s most recognizable landmarks, with its green copper domes, choice views of the Hollywood sign and bust of James Dean.

Besides its public telescope and shows in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium (32 to 35 minutes each; $6 to $10 per person), the observatory offers a variety of free indoor exhibits, plus presentations in its Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater. The observatory is closed on Mondays.

Parking is hard to come by and pricey ($10 per hour), so Christopher suggests hiking up from the Greek Theatre or Fern Dell.

Listen under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl

Vocalists Brian Stokes Mitchell and Sutton Foster perform with the L.A. Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl

Picnic before or during shows at the Hollywood Bowl this summer. Its summer lineup will include performances from the L.A. Philharmonic, Chris Stapleton, the Roots, Harry Connick Jr., Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan and more.

One of my favorite things about the Hollywood Bowl: You can bring your own food and drink to shows. You’re also allowed to bring beer or wine to some shows. Read up on what you can, and cannot bring, in advance .

Try the island life on Catalina

An aerial view of boats moored at Avalon Harbor and the Catalina Casino in Catalina Island

Skip Hawaii and head to Catalina for an island escape this summer. The ferry ride is about an hour and you may encounter playful dolphins on the way. Round-trip ferry rides for adults with Catalina Express to Avalon from Long Beach, San Pedro or Dana Point cost $92 to $96.

You might consider spending a weekend, as there are too many options to fit in one day: submarine tours, snorkeling, miniature golf, cycling and the Catalina Zipline Eco Tour that will set you zinging above eucalyptus trees.

Hide out in remote Jalama Beach County Park

Beach-goers walk along the beach, near the Jalama creek estuary at Jalama State Beach

If you’re looking for a secluded getaway, Jalama Beach is just for you. It’s in the middle of nowhere at the end of a gorgeous 14-mile country road that veers west from Highway 1, which splits off from U.S. 101 at the Gaviota Pass near Lompoc in Santa Barbara County.

At the end of Jalama Road, you’ll find a 107-site campground on a beach with seven rentable cabins. You’ll also find the Jalama Beach Store, whose Jalama Burgers are, as Christopher writes, “one of Santa Barbara County’s principal assets.”

Illustration of dogs framed by the diamond shapes of a chain link fence

A canine rescue group became a favorite of Hollywood celebrities. But were the dogs really “rescues”? Little-known Wagmor Pets got famous by adopting dogs to stars such as Ellen DeGeneres and Sandra Bullock. The issue? Along with a predictable assortment of mutts, Wagmor seemed to have a lot of puppies, purebreds and popular doodle mixes, the kind not always found in shelters.

Forget Las Vegas, New Jersey dreams of this beach locale for summer vacation

Do you wonder what the most popular destinations are for the summer of 2024?

In a poll by cloudwards.net , an online privacy and security website, countries went head-to-head of what the most popular cities are for people from around the world to visit.

The poll was curated through Google Search data and keywords that related to vacation; some examples being hotels, resorts, Airbnb, weather, activities and holidays.

London and Dubai took the leaderboard, both having 10 countries prefer those two destinations over any other of the 195.

But what do Americans prefer?

London and Cancún.

New Jerseyans favor London, however.

For Americans who want to save money, or are inclined to stay close to home, the poll covers domestic travel as well.

Las Vegas was considered “the place to be” this summer, with 14 states favoring this destination.

For New Jersey, they would rather see sandy beaches than casinos, with its top pick being Miami.

Whether people around the world want to indulge in a relaxing, tropical paradise or meander about a bustling city, there are countless destinations to choose from — close to home or across the world.

Five great things to see in the summer night sky

The upcoming months feature the year’s best meteor shower in August, the return of multiple planets and a partial lunar eclipse before the season ends.

Summer nights are the shortest but also the warmest — making them particularly appealing for skywatching. The upcoming months feature the year’s best meteor shower in August, the return of multiple planets and a partial lunar eclipse before the season ends.

Here are five things to watch for as you’re out and about in the balmy summer nights ahead …

The Perseid Meteor shower — Aug. 11 and 12

In my experience, the highlight of every summer is the annual Perseid meteor shower, which peaks on the evenings of Aug. 11 and 12 this year. This is consistently the year’s best meteor display, and the fact that it occurs on typically mild nights makes it one of the more comfortable to watch.

Each year at this time Earth passes through debris streams of particles that litter the path of periodic comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the sun in a long, looping path every 133 years. Discovered in July 1862 by astronomers Lewis Swift and Horace Tuttle, the comet was linked to the Perseids in 1866 by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli. Subsequent searching of ancient records first mention the shower in the year 36.

The Perseids are active from mid-July to the end of August. Their name derives from the point in the sky where the shower members seem to radiate from in the constellation of Perseus, which climbs into the northeastern sky after midnight.

The Perseids are swift and often leave persistent streaks of “trains” for a few seconds after flashing across the sky. A single observer at a dark site can expect to see up to 100 Perseids at the peak time early on the morning of the 12th. The waxing moon will set by 1 a.m. local time, giving you a few hours of quality darkness.

The return of the planets

It’s been a while since we have had bright planets gracing our sky, but that is about to change. Late evening and early morning sky watchers will have a number of our fellow solar system wanderers to keep track of.

For most of July and August the action takes place in the morning sky, where you will find Saturn, Mars and Jupiter. Saturn rises first, cresting the southeast horizon at around midnight in mid-July and by 9 p.m. in mid-August. Saturn reaches opposition, rising at sunset and setting at sunrise, on Sept. 8.

Saturn is approaching one of its equinoxes, which happen every 15 years, and its famous rings are now tipped at a very small angle to Earth. They will appear as two spikes framing the disc of the planet.

Ruddy Mars and bright Jupiter greet early risers in morning twilight throughout July, but they will both be well-placed in the eastern sky for viewing by folks wishing to catch the Perseids. On the morning of Aug. 14, the two planets will pass in close conjunction, just one-third of a degree apart.

Venus gets into the act by mid-August, gradually appearing in the west as evening twilight begins. As we move into September the dazzling planet will gradually pull ahead of the sun. As fall gets underway it will climb to a position of prominence in the evening sky for the rest of the year.

Don’t forget the Milky Way!

The backdrop for all summer stargazing is the luminous band that traces the star-studded Milky Way, the brightest parts of which arc majestically overhead as summer wanes to fall. That amorphous glow that you see from dark sky locations is the combined light of some of the hundreds of billions of stars that accompany our sun in a great cosmic spiral swirl.

Three bright stars, Vega, Deneb, and Altair, form the Summer Triangle grouping, which is split by some of the galaxy’s brightest star clouds. Binoculars or a small low-power telescope will begin to break these clouds up into individual stars and clusters as well as show glowing emission nebulae.

An extra full moon

There will be four full moons between the summer solstice and the autumnal equinox. These will occur this Saturday (Strawberry Moon), July 21 (Full Buck Moon), Aug. 19 (Full Sturgeon Moon), and Sept. 17 (Harvest Moon).

Having four full moons in a single season is unusual; typically there are only three. This leads to one of the definitions of “Blue Moon,” which, according to an account in the 1937 edition of the Maine Farmer’s Almanac, labels the third full Moon of a season as the “Blue Moon.” The more popular definition calls the second full Moon in a calendar month the “Blue Moon.” This last occurred in August 2023 .

Partial lunar eclipse — Sept. 18

Summer holds one last treat for us just before the fall equinox. The full moon on Sept. 17 will look a bit odd as the shadow of the Earth brushes its northern polar regions in a small partial lunar eclipse. Mid-eclipse occurs at 10:44 p.m. Eastern time in Washington, at which time about eight percent of the moon will be obscured.
