Guide to visiting the Shanghai Tower Observation Deck

Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in China and the 2nd tallest building in the whole world, only after Burj Khalifa , which contains a long spire. Like the Shanghai World Financial Center and Jin Mao Tower which are the two other skyscrapers that situated adjacent to it, there's an observation deck at the uppermost floors of Shanghai Tower, named Top of Shanghai, the observation deck launched a trial opening in June 2016, only opened to some groups of visitors. On April 27th 2017, it officially opened to the public.

Shanghai Tower

Currently, visitors can get access to the 118th floor and 119th floor, which are 546m and 552m high respectively (note: the 119th floor is not stated on admission tickets, but is accessible from 118th floor via a stairway), the 119th floor of the tower is currently the second highest observation deck in the world, only 3 meters less than the secondary observation deck of Burj Khalifa, which is 555m high. In the future, the 121st floor will also open, by then it will become the highest observation deck in the world. Although the highest viewing platform hasn't been opened, it's alright as there comes the advantage that the ticket price is lower, the normal entry price is only 180 Chinese Yuan or approximately 26 US Dollars , this price is same as the observatory on Shanghai World Financial Center, and lower than that of many other skyscrapers around the world like the Empire State Building, One World Trade Center, and far less than At The Top Sky on Burj Khalifa, of which a ticket could cost as much as 150 Dollars. The price will surely increase significantly once it becomes the world's highest observation deck after the 121st floor is opened.

Chinese can book the tickets on some local websites that only available in Chinese, for foreigners, the admission tickets can be booked by clicking here , after you booked, an e-ticket will be sent to you via email, which can be used to pick the paper tickets at a self-service kiosk near the entrance to the tower. You can also purchase the tickets in the ticket hall, but it is highly recommended to book online in advance, as a discount will be offered and you will save quite a long time for waiting in the line to just buy a ticket.

For foreigners, it's better to bring your passport to the tower, as sometimes it will be used either when purchasing the ticket or picking the ticket in case the ticket has been booked online.( Update: Now they will not check your passport, but will take a picture of you after security check.)

Don't go too late, the opening hours of Shanghai Tower is 8:30 am to 10:00 pm and tickets stop selling at 9:30 pm. This is much earlier compared to the observation decks in the United States, which usually close after midnight. And you'd better to visit there during the time of dusk since both the day views and night views can be seen in a single visit.

Shanghai tower has two addresses referring to the same location, one is 479 Lujiazui Ring Road, the other is 501 Yincheng Middle Road. The tower's significant height makes it standing out among all the buildings in Pudong district, anyone can easily pick it out without even knowing its address.

Shanghai Tower seen from the Bund

There are many ways to get there, the most used option is by subway, take Line 2 and get off at Lujiazui station, get out the station at exit 6, then the tower will be arrived. If you are near the Bund, then take a ferry is a good option, simply buy a ticket that costs only 2 Chinese Yuan you can cross the river and enjoy the river view in the same time, after getting off the ferry just have a 10 minutes walk you will reach the tower.

If you haven't booked the ticket then head to the ticket hall, which is at the northwest corner of the base of the building, near the intersection of Yincheng Road and Huayuanshiqiao Road. You must pay in cash or by Tenpay or Alipay, which are two Chinese online payment systems similar to PayPal. Credit card can't be used. If you have bought the admission ticket online, you can directly go to the entrance of the observatory to pick up the ticket on a dedicated device, which can be found at the level B1 after you get in from the main entrance by the street.

The entry ticket of Shanghai Tower Observation Deck

After entering into the inner entrance, the first place prepared for visitors is known as the preface hall of the observatory, there are some pictures and videos showing the development of Shanghai Tower, and some diagrams and models that introduce some other tallest buildings around the world.

The highest speed of the elevator of Shanghai Tower is 18 meters per second, even the average speed is no less than 10m per second, it's the fastest elevator in the world, it takes only 55 seconds to reach the observation deck on 118th floor at 546m off the ground. This is an annular viewing platform, occupying more than 1,000 square meters or more than 10000 square feet, it offers 360 degree views of Shanghai.

There are some telescopes by the windows, but these telescopes are not free of charge, so you'd better to bring your own, as telescope is a must-have equipment for travelers.

shanghai tower visit

It's recommended to check the weather of the day of your visit, as observation activities can be influenced by weathers, it's better to choose a clear day to visit as the visibility will be good, if not then the worst case is that nothing else can be seen but only fog. If you have to visit Shanghai Tower observation deck on a day of bad weather, I recommend you to visit by the night time, at night time the cityscape will still be visible due to the city lights have higher penetrability. There's a souvenir store on 118th floor, selling some artworks and some other products based on Shanghai Tower, even the bottled water is shaped with the appearance of Shanghai Tower. There's an artificial tree known as wishing tree, visitors can buy a card priced 18 Chinese Yuan to write down the wishing on it and hang it onto the tree. A sky post office is set near the wishing tree, it's currently highest post office, sending a post card from a height of over 500m can be a different experience.

Sky post office on Shanghai Tower

The observation deck on 118th floor of Shanghai Tower has a washing room, in contrast, the highest viewing platform on 100th floor of Shanghai World Financial Center doesn't have washing room, and the staffs don't inform visitors that, visitors have to leave there even they still haven't seen the views enough. The 119th floor can be accessed through a stairway connecting two floors, unlike 118th floor this floor is not fully opened, and only opens in weekends, there are some seats for visitors to have a rest and a coffee shop can be found there, the coffee is not very expensive, but the snacks are much more expensive than that in stores outside. Having a cup of coffee while looking at the impressive cityscape outside the window can be an excellent experience. To leave the observatory, the elevator is at 118th floor, after descend to the first floor, visitors must get out of the building through another store that sells souvenirs. Then the whole trip is finished.

Designed by Gensler, it has won many domestic and international awards for its unique shape and sustainability.

Highlights of Shanghai Tower

Observation deck in Shanghai tower

Although Shanghai Tower is only the third tallest building worldwide, it does have the world’s highest observatory at 546 meters, which occupies an area of over 1000 square meters, has a triangular layout, and is shrouded with huge transparent glass walls. You can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the mega city without any blocks. Visitors will first arrive at the exhibition hall on B1, which focuses on the evolution of the world’s skyscrapers and the features and records of Shanghai Tower, and then take the elevator to reach the observatory.

High-speed elevator in Shanghai tower

The elevator in Shanghai Tower also used to set a world record. At a top speed of 20.5 meters per second, it was the fastest elevator in the world until 2017. But normally, it only ascends at 18 meters per second to avoid causing sickness. Within 55 seconds, you soar from the underground to the 118th floor. It feels like you are in a plane taking off and may thus experience discomfort in your ears due to the dramatic change in the air pressure.

Traditional Chinese Garden in Shanghai Tower

On the 37th floor of Shanghai Tower is a traditional Chinese Garden with rockeries, streams, pavilions, grass, and flowers. It is named Banmu Yuan, which can be translated into Half-Mu Garden (Mu is a Chinese measurement similar to the acre) because it occupies an area of 384 square meters, exactly half mu. It will remind you of the huge aircraft in science fiction movies with a complete ecosystem. Unfortunately, it only opens to the public occasionally. But you can take your chance.

Cafe in shanghai tower

Above the observation deck on the 119th floor is a cafe named Loung 552 (the number represents its height). The food and drink are delicious but nothing special. However, if you want to avoid the crowd in the observatory and enjoy the wonderful view of Shanghai peacefully, it is a terrific choice. You can have dinner at 358 RMB or an afternoon tea at 298 RMB. Both these prices include the ticket to the observation deck.

Explore Other Attractions Inside Shanghai Tower : Apart from enjoying the stunning views from the observation deck, Shanghai Tower offers other attractions worth exploring on different floors:

  • 37th Floor: Guanfu Museum (Ticket Price: 100 yuan): This museum, founded by Mr. Ma Weidu, is the first private museum in China. It features four permanent exhibition halls showcasing porcelain, artifacts from the East and West, gold artifacts, and sculptures, along with a temporary exhibition hall.
  • 38th Floor: Treasure House Artisan Hall (Ticket Price: 100 yuan): This hall consists of three main themed exhibition halls, collaborating with over 60 Chinese arts and crafts masters and national-level inheritors of intangible cultural heritage. It presents over a thousand pieces of artisanal works and 2000 square meters of immersive exhibition space, showcasing Chinese craftsmanship and aesthetics.
  • 52nd Floor: Duo Yun Bookstore: This highly popular internet-famous bookstore offers free admission, but advance reservation via public account on Wechat is required. Despite the crowd, the environment is still pleasant.

Consider Booking Lounge 552 Restaurant Package : If you’ve purchased the Lounge 552 restaurant package, it’s advisable to head straight to the restaurant on the 119th floor to get your queue number immediately. The dining service operates on a first-come, first-served basis. This option also save you the trouble of waiting in the line for the observation deck.

Be Prepared for Long Queues on Holidays : During holidays, queues can be exceptionally long. You might think you’re about to reach the top, but then you enter another room filled with people waiting, which can be disheartening.

Experience the Dampers and Light Show : Shanghai Tower features a spectacular damper system designed to reduce the building’s swaying motion. Paired with a dazzling light show, it offers an unforgettable experience. The light show is an additional fee and can be purchased along with the admission ticket.

How do you get tickets for here when you aren’t based in China or you don’t speak Chinese? None of the offical apps are in English to enable them to be purchased.

' data-src=

The easiest way to get a ticket for the Shanghai Tower is to buy it on site. There is a ticket office at the entrance. Basically, if you do not pay a visit during peak times like national holidays. There are always some tickets left

Shanghai Tower

Top choice in Shanghai

China’s tallest building dramatically twists skywards from its footing in Lujiazui. The 121-storey, 632m-tall, Gensler-designed Shanghai Tower topped out in August 2013 and opened in mid-2016. The spiral-shaped tower houses office space, entertainment venues, shops, a conference centre, a luxury hotel and ‘sky lobbies’. The gently corkscrewing form – its nine interior cylindrical units wrapped in two glass skins – is the world’s second-tallest building at the time of writing. The observation deck on the 118th floor is the world's highest.

The twist is introduced by the outer skin of glass that swivels through 120 degrees as it rises, while atrium ‘sky gardens’ in the vertical spaces sandwiched between the two layers of glass open up a large volume of the tower to public use. The tower is sustainably designed: as well as providing insulation, the huge area of glass vastly reduces electrical consumption through the use of sunlight. The tower’s shape furthermore reduces wind loads by 24%, which generated a saving of US$58m in construction costs. Before the tower even went up, engineers were faced with building a 61,000-cu-metre concrete mat that would support its colossal mass in the boggy land of Pudong.

Uppermost floors of the tower are reserved for that obligatory Shanghai attraction – the world’s highest skydeck above ground level – with passengers ferried skywards in the world’s fastest lifts (64km/h), designed by Mitsubishi (and the world’s tallest single-lift elevator). Visitors can gaze down on both the Jinmao Tower and Shanghai World Financial Center below. A six-level luxury retail podium fills the base of the tower.

Shanghai Tower – Facts, Tickets, and Information for your visit

Shanghai Tower is one of the most iconic buildings in China and a major landmark in Shanghai. It has a total height of 632 meters (2,073) and 128 floors, making it the second-tallest building in the world or third if Tokyo Skytree is included on the list.

Furthermore, it’s the tallest building in China and the world’s tallest twisted building. Shanghai Tower was completed in September 2015 and finally opened for visitors in July 2016.

It can accommodate as many as 16,000 people per day and has become one of the most popular attractions in the city.

How Much Does it Cost to Visit?

The Shanghai Tower is found in the Pudong district of Shanghai, China, and has an observation deck open to the public.

Currently, visitors can get access to the 118th (546 meters tall) and 119th (552 meters tall) floor of the towers. Ticket costs are relatively cheap in comparison to other skyscrapers as an adult ticket is priced at just $26 (180 Chinese Yuan).

Ticket Info

Once booked, you’ll receive a confirmation email and an e-ticket. Bring the e-ticket (either printed or on your mobile) to the tower on the day and scan it at one of the self-service kiosks near the entrance to the tower.

Those who haven’t purchased a ticket online in advance can buy tickets on the day from the ticket hall. However, to avoid long queues and an inflated price, it’s recommended you purchase your Shanghai Tower ticket in advance.

The rules around whether you need to bring your passport to collect your ticket are slightly blurred. Most likely, your passport will not be required, but it’s better to bring it than to leave it at your hotel/apartment.

Shanghai Tower: The World's Highest Observation Deck Is Now Open

shanghai tower visit

There's a new kid in town. The Shanghai Tower . Just moved into Pudong. Dad's here on a sweeeeeet relocation package. It's looking around the school yard, sizing up all the other kids out there -- the Jin Mao , the SWFC . Head and shoulders bigger than everyone else -- growth spurt! -- the Shanghai Tower, new kid on the block, just looking for its place in the world. Construction on the exterior of the world's second highest, and perhaps greenest, skyscraper, the Shanghai Tower , finished back in September of 2015, but most of the structure remains closed for reasons unknown. Since completion, it's become the first building to surpass 600 meters in China. It's the world's second tallest building overall, with 128 floors stretching up to 632 meters. (!!!) Only the Burj Khalifa in Dubai is taller, though the Shanghai Tower has a higher observation deck (the Burj Khalifa's is 555 meters high). In July, the tower quietly opened their observation deck to visitors. SmSh took a ride to the 118th floor to take a look around.

The main entrance is located near the corner of Huayuan Shiqiao Lu and Yincheng Zhong Lu. Staff will guide you down an escalator to the entrance where you can purchase tickets. The bottom floor has a few areas showcasing the tallest buildings in the world and their stats. There's also a section about the the Shanghai Tower -- apparently it's got the fastest elevator (built by Mitsubishi) and the highest swimming pool with a view in the world. Cannot wait to write that article.

In one area, there's a disappointing light show with a 3D-printed model of the tower -- never change, Shanghai -- but the holographic-like screens and see-through LCDs providing info about the tower is pretty cool.

Then you go down even further underground to get to the main elevators that warp to the peak.

How fast? The elevators here hit a maximum speed of 18m/s, taking you to the 118th floor's observatory in under a minute. That's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory fast. There are no in between stops. It's just one ride from the basement to the top.

The observatory on the 118th floor shaped like a donut with the elevators in the center, giving you a 360 degree view of the city. One day, some genius will take a panoramic view from the tower. And YouTube will applaud, applaud, applaud and rain down 'likes' on said genius.

Unlike the SWFC, the "sky walk" here is digitally created by some high def monitors installed on the flooring, however this is not up and running yet. The coin operated binoculars cost 2rmb for 120 seconds. The viewing quality isn't great, but you can spot a few far out details.

Prices & Times

The 118th floor (and the 119th on weekends) are open from 9am-9pm daily.

Adults: 160rmb. Seniors over 60 and students with a valid ID: 120rmb Children under 1.4 meters: 90rmb

Starfield: All Hidden Landmarks On Earth

  • In Starfield , Earth has become an uninhabitable wasteland, but players can still visit and explore the ruins of some of the world's most famous landmarks.
  • To unlock these landmarks, players need to acquire specific books, like Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist or The Ancient Civilization of Egypt .
  • Each landmark has a correlated snow globe that can be found nearby, usually at the base of the structure.

By the time Starfield takes place in the year 2330, Earth has become an inhospitable wasteland after Dr. Victor Aiza's discovery of Grav Drive technology in the 2100s caused the planet’s magnetosphere to collapse merely 50 years into testing, forcing humanity to flee and inhabit many other star systems instead. Although it's no longer deemed to be habitable, it is still possible to visit Earth in Starfield , and even view some of the remaining monuments there.

Amid the vast, seemingly never-ending plains of sand, there are still some recognizable landmarks to be found. Due to the fact that players can't explore entire planets on foot at once in Starfield (and given the size of Earth, that alone could take some time if there were such an option), in order to visit these landmarks, players will need to find special prompts that will add new landing sites.

The Shard (London Landmark)

There are plenty of Charles Dickens novels to be found in Starfield , as humanity seemed to all reach for their Dickens collections during the mass exodus from Earth. By acquiring and opening Charles Dickens' second novel, Oliver Twist , in the inventory menu, players will unlock the London Landmark activity.

The London Landmark in question is the remains of the city's current tallest building: The Shard, which stands at a height of 310m. One of Starfield's many collectible snow globes can also be found on a rock near the base of The Shard with a model of present-day London inside.

Pyramids Of Giza (Cairo Landmark)

To visit The Pyramids of Giza in Cairo, players must read a copy of The Ancient Civilization of Egypt to unlock the Egypt Landmark activity. This book can be found lying around in various bases across the galaxy, but for those who don't want to spend much time searching for it, there is the option to visit the bookseller and Old Earth books enthusiast Ahnjong Sinclair in Akila City and purchase it directly from her.

Upon visiting the Egypt Landmark, the remains of only two out of the three pyramids can be found. Much like with The Shard, the Cairo snow globe can be found nearby, on a slab of rock near the base of the furthest pyramid.

Empire State Building (New York Landmark)

A book called Our Lost Heritage is the key to unlocking the New York Landmark landing zone. Unfortunately, this can't be purchased and must be stolen from the office of President Abello in New Atlantis instead. Abello's office is located on the upper floors of the MAST building, and the book is situated on the right-hand side of her desk.

The New York landmark is the remains of the Empire State Building, which is looking worse for wear with large portions of it crumbling away. The New York snow globe can be found on the right side of the building, sitting on a rock.

US Bank Tower (Los Angeles Landmark)

To visit the Los Angeles Landmark, players won't need to acquire a novel, but rather a copy of the Hope Family Tree. The only known location for this is on Ron Hope's Desk in Hopetown, and the first time there is an opportunity to pick this up is during the " Where Hope is Built " faction quest. If players don't grab the family tree at this point, it is possible to revisit Ron Hope's office on Polvo upon completing the " Accidents Happen " quest for Ryujin.

The Los Angeles landmark is the US Bank Tower, which much like some other landmarks is crumbling apart, with a large zig-zag-shaped crack going up the side of it. The Los Angeles snow globe can be found at the base of the tower among the rubble.

The Gateway Arch (Saint Louis Landmark)

A copy of The Price of Destiny is needed to visit the Saint Louis Landmark: The Gateway Arch, and this can be found on Neon. The book is situated in Benjamin Bayu's penthouse, so to access this, players will need to pickpocket the key off him as he hangs out in the Astral Lounge's VIP area.

When visiting the Gateway Arch, much of the stainless-steel plating has fallen from the 192-meter-tall monument and can be found semi-submerged in the sand below. Directly underneath the arch amid this debree is the St. Louis snow globe.

Shanghai Tower (Shanghai Landmark)

To visit China's Shanghai Tower and acquire the Shanghai snow globe at its base, players will need to find a copy of Essentials of Modern Macroeconomics . This can be found at the foot of a whiteboard in a classroom on the Residential Level of the generational colony ship: ECS Constant.

The ECS Constant can be visited for the first time as part of the " First Contact " side quest when visiting the Porrima star system. If the ship is still intact following the decisions made in this mission, players can revisit it later to pick up this book if they missed it the first time around, however, if it's destroyed, the book will be lost with it, along with the means to unlock the Shanghai Landmark landing zone.

International Commerce Center (Hong Kong Landmark)

Maurice Lyon's Journal is the key to unlocking the location of Kowloon's International Commerce Center and acquiring the Hong Kong snow globe near the damaged section of its base. As Lyon is in charge of the museum at the New Homestead settlement on Titan, his journal can be found there. There are many books on display in this area, but the one in question can be found on a metal shelf to the left of the stairs that lead down to the museum.

Abeno Harukas (Osaka Landmark)

The Diary of Kyosuke Nagata is required to visit the Abeno Harukas landmark and collect the Osaka snow globe. To attain this, players will need to go undercover for the United Colonies' System Defense as part of the special division's goal of dismantling the space pirate group, The Crimson Fleet.

Once "arrested" in UC territory during the " Deep Cover " mission, the Crimson Fleet's base in the Kryx system, The Key, will become available to explore. Upon The Key, the diary can be located on a nightstand to the left of the bed in Delgado's quarters, just up the stairs from the command center.

Burj Khalifa (Dubai Landmark)

The world's current tallest building, Dubai's 828 meter-tall Burj Khalifa, can be found in Starfield by finding the book Race to the Heavens . As with the Diary of Kyosuke Nagata, this can be found during the Crimson Fleet questline as part of the " Breaking the Bank " mission.

Race to the Heavens is found on a desk in Larry Dumbrosky's suite aboard the Siren of the Stars luxury liner. To access this suite, players with a rank two Security skill will be able to pick its Expert lock, but those without will be able to access it later in the quest once the alarm sounds. As with every other landmark, a snow globe can be found on a rock near its base, in this case on the far side of the Burj Khalifa.

NASA Launch Tower (Cape Canaveral Landmark)

Starfield 's main story will involve traveling to Earth as part of the mission " Unearthed ." During this point quite late into the campaign, players will visit the NASA Launch Tower in Cape Canaveral and uncover the planet's past. Unlike the other landmarks, the NASA snow globe isn't situated at the base of the structure but can be located on one of the desks in the upper levels of the facility instead.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Cut Content)

An Italy Landmark appears to have been cut from Starfield prior to its launch, but there is still a way to find it and collect its snow globe. The location can only be visited by landing in the Piedmont region of Italy and typing the console command " cow 0018E4B4 0 0 ." This will display the ruins of the Tower of Pisa in the distance, and the Pisa Snow Globe will also appear at the base of the now-fallen tower.
