Shropshire Council Newsroom

Concessionary bus travel arrangements to return to normal next week.

Bus stop markings close up

Arrangements for concessionary bus travel for the elderly and vulnerable will return to normal in the Shropshire Council area from next Monday (15 June 2020).

From this date bus pass holders will only be able to travel for free from 9.30am each day.

A temporary change was introduced on 20 March to enable pass holders to travel for free before 9.30am to take advantage of the exclusive early morning shopping times being offered by some supermarkets and shops.

The change applies to all bus services operating in the Shropshire Council area.

Steve Davenport, Cabinet member for highways and transport, said:

“We were pleased to be able to lift the restriction just before the lockdown started, but feel that next Monday is the right time for arrangements to return to normal. “Additional shops will be reopening from next week, and many will be more flexible with their opening times. At the same time, more people are using public transport for work and school. And with social distancing in place on buses we want to ensure there is enough room on routes for workers and pupils, as well as shoppers. “Many other councils are doing the same, and Transport for West Midlands and Staffordshire County Council have already reverted back to this arrangement.”

Bus passengers are reminded that, from Monday 15 June, face coverings must be worn on all public transport. Failure to do so will mean they are unable to travel.

Key tips for Planning your journey

When planning a journey by bus, things to consider might be “Where is my nearest bus stop?” and “What bus number do I need?”. You may also want to think about buying your ticket, what it will cost, can you pay by cash or card and can you buy it in advance online. Be aware that online tickets for buses are often non-refundable if you cannot make your journey.

Buses can only stop at marked bus stops, so you need to be sure where you are getting off in advance. If you are not sure, the bus driver should be happy to help you. Ask the driver to let you know when your stop is coming up. You may need to consider if the nearest bus stop is accessible if you are travelling with a scooter or wheelchair.
