I have lived in SoCal for the last 16 years. Tried to see this band. Finally did with a move to Asheville, NC. I have to say of all the hundreds, yes, hundreds I have seen over the last 40 years. This band ranks with the best!
Great venue, Oranage Peel, great appreciative crowd, outstanding performance. Some goods bands are better in person. SSP are an incredible live band. I categorize them as 21st century punk-rock fusion. Great tunes, killer bass, badass drums, solid keyboard. Brian Aubert is an artist. Songs he created & then the licks to back it up...it's his band.
If you can see them you will have a moment. Trust me.

I attended the Silversun Pickups concert on December 4 at the Roxian Theater in McKees Rocks, PA. It was my first time seeing Silversun Pickups live and needless to say, it did not disappoint. I had been a fan of the band for at least a decade and felt lucky to finally have an opportunity to listen to them up close and personal. They were awesome. They came out with a lot of energy out of the gates and that energy and enthusiasm on-stage continued for the entirety of the set. The talent of the band was on display throughout, precision-playing at its best: howling guitars, rolling bass lines, and thunderous, tone-setting drums permeated the stage and the acoustics in the building allowed for the sound to really resonate. The band looked like they were having a lot of fun and the crowd responded accordingly. Their setlist reflected the longevity and diversity of their catalogue and was the perfect mix of old and new. I was extremely impressed with Brian’s guitar-playing prowess. He spoke with his guitar and his lyrics and I came away appreciating his skill and that if his band mates that much more by the end of the night. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the show, I became an even bigger fan of the band during and afterwards, and I intend to see them again whenever they return to Pittsburgh.
The show, as always, was amazing. The fact that it was to benefit Puerto Rico makes them and the show THAT much more special. Meeting them was a real treat, our seats were insanely awesome, and they always put on a phenomenal show. Their energy, music, and talent just blows me away every time. Silversun Pickups have been my and my husband's favorite band for the better part of a decade and every time we see them just reaffirms it. This show was definitely the one where they had the most fun.
Thank you for your music and always being amazing, Silversun! And thank you especially for helping to take care of our own people down in Puerto Rico when the jerks in charge won't. We are all the balance <3

Concert Review: Silversun Pickups at Iron City
February 17th, 2023 | birmingham, al.
Silversun Pickups kick off their 2023 with some fire on the first stop of their "Physical Thrills" tour in Birmingham.
Silversun Pickups 2/17/2023 at Iron City | Dylan Basden Photography
Not only did this show mark the start of Silversun Pickup's tour and 2023, it also marked the band's first show in Birmingham in just under six years. This was only their fourth ever show in the state of Alabama in over 20 years as a band, so to say fans were excited might have been an understatement, I would say 'ravenous' would be more suiting. In what could have been a cruel twist of fate, the band was stranded in Atlanta the night before the show after flights were grounded due to severe weather in Birmingham, with Uber being fans' saving grace.
Paris Jackson 2/17/2023 at Iron City | Dylan Basden Photography
Silversun brought along Paris Jackson to open up the show. Paris, daughter of the legendary Michael Jackson, has been carving out a name for herself over the last couple of years, choosing to rely on her own talents rather than her father's name. Over the past few months, Paris has seen opening slots for several national acts, including Manchester Orchestra and The Revivalists. Instead of following in The King Of Pop's footsteps, Paris has fleshed out her own sound, a combination of head-rattling punk rock intensity and the lyricism of more mellow indie folk. Taking on all of the flare and fire of mid-2000's emo royalty, Paris completely controls the stage. Her voice is often soft, delicate on the ear, but she is unafraid to let herself roar to life, dominating the room on songs like "lighthouse". Jackson also brought an impressive backing band, including talent from Teenage Wrist, 3oh3, and Ava Max. Paris Jackson is absolutely a name to watch closely, as I expect her to continue rising in popularity and eventually collide into mainstream success.
In 2023 I feel it is safe to say Silversun Pickups have reach that 'Legacy Act' stage, especially in the indie-sphere. Over the course of over two decades, the band has proven time and time again that they can remain relevant, repeatedly having singles breakout into alternative radio, even crossing over into the mainstream. The band is currently out in support of their latest album, Physical Thrills , which came out last year. For a band with so much success to still be not only be relevant, but also continuing to deliver stellar shows is no small feet.
Blistering guitars, deep bass, and snappy drums were all felt throughout the night. Silversun Pickups certainly haven't mellowed with age, as their show was just as powerful as the last time I saw them over three years ago. Frontman Brian Aubert's chilling vocals cascaded over the speakers. Combining a subtle power with higher pitches, Brian's vocals create a sense of not just urgency, but an impending swell. Nikki Monninger's bass lines amplify this, with a brooding presence pushing through the venue's subwoofers.
Behind the kit, Christopher Guanlao adds the thumping, tight percussion that fans have come to expect. Every strike of the kit felt calculated— with Christopher's drumming coming in prominently in the mix. But, in my opinion, it was Joe Lester's playing that sold the performance. Behind the keys, Joe manipulated the sound and samples, adding in delicate bit of keys and synth. Lester ties together the band's performance, weaving the heavier elements of the other members with delicate highlights.
It isn't often that you get to see so many hit songs in one night. "It Doesn't Matter Why", "Panic Switch", "Circadian Rhythm (Last Dance)", "Substitution", "Lazy Eye", and more dot the band's setlist. The band even riffed some of "The Last of Us" from Gustavo Santaolalla's score of the game. Silversun Pickups' setlist can be found below.
Setlist :
1. stillness (way beyond), 2. stick and stones, 3. well thought out twinkles, 4. it doesn't matter why, 5. panic switch, 6. scared together, 7. the royal we, 8. alone on a hill, 9. kissing families, 10. don't know yet, 11. hidden moon, 12. circadian rhythm (last dance), 13. dots and dashes (enough already), 14. substitution, 15. nightlight, -, 16. dream at tempo 050, 17. system error, 18. empty nest, 19. the last of us (gustavo santaolalla cover) -> lazy eye.
Birmingham was just the first stop on a 15 night run for Silversun Pickups. With the exception of a show in Chicago supporting Bush and a festival appearance in Maryland, Silversun will be headlining their entire tour, including stops in Knoxville, New Orleans, and Austin. Their full list of dates are below.

This show felt like an instant classic. Silversun Pickups still have everything it takes to put on a great show, something I don't see changing anytime soon. For fans of the band, this is a must see show.

BUSH Announces January/February 2023 Tour With JERRY CANTRELL, CANDLEBOX And SILVERSUN PICKUPS
After an incredible summer on this year's hottest rock concert package with comrades ALICE IN CHAINS and BREAKING BENJAMIN that sold close to 400,000 tickets, Grammy -nominated rock band BUSH will hit the road again in 2023 in support of its new album, "The Art Of Survival" . The U.S. tour kicks off on January 28 in Reno, Nevada, along with some very special guests, including Jerry Cantrell , CANDLEBOX and SILVERSUN PICKUPS .
BUSH singer and guitarist Gavin Rossdale stated: "We'll always love playing those big summer shows and the big stages, but we wanted to do some shows where we could get close to the die-hard BUSH fans again. We're excited for this run coming up."
Tour dates:
January 28 - Reno, NV - Grand Theatre at The Grand Sierra Resort * January 29 - Los Angeles, CA - Hollywood Palladium * January 31 - Anaheim, CA - City National Grove of Anaheim February 01 - Phoenix, AZ- The Van Buren February 03 - Salt Lake City, UT - The Complex February 04 - Denver, CO - Fillmore Auditorium February 06 - Minneapolis, MN - Fillmore Minneapolis February 07 - Kansas City, MO - The Midland Theatre February 09 - Toronto, ON - HISTORY February 10 - Cleveland, OH - MGM Northfield Park February 11 - Waterloo, NY -the Vine @ del Lago Casino Resort February 14 - Boston, MA - MGM Music Hall at Fenway - February 15 - Washington, D.C. - The Anthem - February 17 - Atlantic City, NJ - Ocean Casino Resort - February 18 - New York, NY - Hammerstein Ballroom - February 20 - Nashville, TN - Ryman Auditorium February 22 - Louisville, KY - The Louisville Palace February 24 - Battle Creek, MI - FireKeepers Casino February 25 - Chicago, IL - Salt Shed + February 26 - St Louis, MO - The Pageant
* Jerry Cantrell joining - CANDLEBOX joining + SILVERSUN PICKUPS
"The Art Of Survival" encompasses the resiliency of the human spirit in the face of trial and tribulations as the band's own enduring place as rock outliers. Songs such as "Kiss Me I'm Dead" and "Gun Fight" represent the horrors that's going on in this country, while "Identity" , "Shark Bite" and "Creatures of The Fire" capture the strength of people during these dark times. BUSH 's euphoric rock revelation "Heavy Is The Ocean" encourages love and recognizes the bravery behind freely expressing your feelings.
Forging ahead once more, BUSH wrote and recorded what would become "The Art of Survival" during 2022, reteaming with Erik Ron ( PANIC! AT THE DISCO , GODSMACK ) who produced "Flowers On A Grave" and the title track for the group's previous album, "The Kingdom" (2020),and collaborating once again on two tracks with film composer, musician, and producer Tyler Bates ( "300" , "Guardian Of The Galaxy").
In a recent interview with Stereogum , Rossdale was asked about the "more metallic sound" of "The Art Of Survival" compared to BUSH 's earlier efforts. He responded: "Metallic, or metal? It's not a metal record, 'cause I don't sing that way, [but] look, I'm always trying to push.
"I totally accept rock's position in the culture, which is pretty — it's weird 'cause on the one hand it's nonexistent, and on the other hand, I'm playing to 350,000 people over the course of, like, two months. [Those aren't] 350,000 invisible people.
"For me, as a songwriter, I'm just always looking for different ways to challenge myself and keep it fresh, keep it interesting in service of a long career. People can either mellow out into the sunset, or they do something like I've done with 'The Kingdom' and with 'The Art Of Survival' , which is try and fight, go against the tide of the success of the band, try and create records that exist in their entirety on their own. They don't lean on the previous work, you know? To me, it's just trying to find what inspires me, what's interesting, what I like in a studio, that's really what it is. And I get the luxury of being to an extent my own producer, where I can make tracks for myself to sing on. And then I collaborate, I sing on other people's music, whatever, I'm very collaborative. But in terms of the meat of the record and getting the aesthetic going, it's just me in a room, and I've noticed that these last few years so much is given to the live performance.
"I play metal festivals, rock festivals, alternative, more pop-leaning festivals sometimes, not often, so I would find myself over the years choosing the heavier songs off of certain records. You want to survive amongst peers on those stages and not be just going [ sings mournfully ], 'Swallowed…' [ Laughs ] It's a bit much. It just got into that situation, and I had that one record that we did called 'Institute' , which is all [written in] drop C sharp and it was really fun to do, and I don't know, I just kind of felt there was something about that that's exciting to me. People have said about the last two records, 'Oh, it sounds like old BUSH ,' you know? And I think that non-musical people just think that 'cause the intention and the vitality to it is consistent, that's what it is. Musically it's completely different.
"I read people writing about the dearth of inspiration in rock music, and how it can be a bit homogenized, because I think rock radio can be seen as a homogenous sound, going for a certain thing, whereas everyone else in the pop world can be far more experimental and way out there. And to me it's just as simple as trying to stay interesting to ourselves, and create excitement like that."
