I have a question that what are the differences between RV microwaves and home microwaves? I am not sure that they are different or not, I think they are almost the same. So, can I use home microwaves for my RV? Hope you can answer my questions.

The difference between an RV microwave and a regular microwave is that RV microwaves tend to be smaller and perform at lower power levels so as not to consume too much space or electricity. They also are more likely than regular microwaves to heat using convection instead of radiation

How We Chose the Best Small Microwave

1. Size – Size does matter when it comes to mini microwaves. Make sure you measure the space available for the microwave and its dimensions – before you buy. Add 1-2 inches to the space you have for clearance.

2. Capacity – small microwaves’ capacity ranges from 0.5 Cu. Ft. to 0.9 Cu. Ft. The larger the capacity, the more power (in watts).

How Much Do Small Microwaves Cost?

A mini microwave (countertop) costs $65 to $180, depending on the brand, features, type, and wattage.

Surprisingly, the size does not affect the price significantly.

The main factors influencing the price are the brand (reliability, warranty, etc.) and the features included.

Power levels and pre-programming options also influence the cost of small microwaves.

For example, the Toshiba 0.9 Cu. ft. has 10 power levels and 6 auto programs and costs about $125, while The Panasonic   0.9 Cu. ft. microwave has 9 preset programs and includes inverter technology – costing about $223.

Microwaves often take up a lot of space and use a lot of energy. So, you need to consider several factors before buying a microwave for your RV, like size, wattage, and more.

We're going to tell you what you need to know, and give you 5 recommendations for the best small microwaves for campers.

If you buy something through our links, we may get a small commission at no extra cost to you. It helps keep our lights on so we can continue to provide helpful resources for RVers. Read our  full affiliate disclosure here.

Can You Take a Microwave Camping?

Yes, you can take a microwave camping if your campsite has an electrical hookup. So, even if you're tent camping and don't have an RV, you can take a microwave with you. The convenience of a microwave certainly makes camping easier, especially when traveling with kids.

Do RVs Need Special Microwaves?

While some Class A and large 5th wheels can accommodate standard microwaves, most RV microwaves have a compact design and lower wattage. Since RVers don't have much space and must be mindful of power consumption, a compact RV microwave oven is usually the right choice.

An important consideration is how the microwave vents. If you are replacing an existing built-in microwave, it's easiest to make a direct replacement that works with existing venting.

Another key difference is that many RV microwaves have a convection cooking feature and some are even a convection microwave oven combo. So, they're a multi-functional appliance that makes the most of the little space RVers have to work with.

Small Microwaves for Campers

Small Microwave Sizes

Regular microwaves have a capacity range of about 1.0 cubic foot to 2.2 cubic feet. A compact microwave ranges from 0.5 – 0.9 cubic feet . These capacities measure the interior space, and the outer dimensions depend on the type of microwave it is.

Here are the standard compact size dimensions:

  • Height: 10″-11″
  • Width: 15″-18″
  • Depth: 12″-16″

RV Microwave Wattage

A regular home microwave is 800-1,200 watts, whereas an RV microwave typically has 600 to 1,000 watts of cooking power. The higher the wattage, the faster your food cooks, but also the faster your RV battery drains.

RVers usually prefer a low wattage microwave, especially if they boondock and must regulate energy consumption. If you switch back and forth from shore power to battery, it's a good idea to get a microwave that has different power levels. That way, you can change cooking power levels depending on your current power source.

Countertop Microwave vs. Built-In Microwave

Many RVs have a new microwave built right into a kitchen cabinet or above the range. To replace these cabinet or range microwaves, you must take careful measurements and buy accordingly. You must also determine if you need to connect to existing venting or if a microwave with a built-in exhaust system will work.

A countertop microwave takes up counter space, which isn't ideal in an RV, but that's where compact options come in. Plus, countertop options can often be used in a designated microwave cabinet, which is usually a doorless cabinet with an electrical outlet.

5 Best Small Microwaves for Campers

So, for the purposes of this article, we are going to focus mainly on countertop microwaves . Many of these microwaves can be used inside a built-in microwave cavity as long as it has enough space to vent properly. You don't want the microwave's vent pressed up against a wall or the back of the cabinet.

But, we also include one built-in compact option at the end that is a popular direct replacement for Greystone.

1. Toshiba 6-in-1 Microwave Air Fryer Oven Combo (0.9 Cu. Ft.)

Toshiba 6-in-1 Microwave Air Fryer Oven Combo (0.9 Cu. Ft.) Small Microwaves for Campers

The dimension of this 0.9 cu ft microwave is bigger than most at 17.6″D x 19.47″W x 11.47″H. However, we've included it on this list because of its impressive versatility, and it still runs on only 900W.

It's a microwave, air fryer, convection oven, broiler, defroster, and Speedy-Combi. The Speedi-Combi modes speed up cooking with a combination of microwave, convection, and grill function.

It also uses inverter technology that heats the food evenly and consistently. All in all, this is arguably the best RV microwave if your RV can accommodate its larger-than-normal compact size.

2. Panasonic NN-SD372S with Inverter Technology (0.8 Cu. Ft.)

Small Microwaves for Campers Panasonic NN-SD372S with Inverter Technology (0.8 Cu. Ft.)

4 Best Small Microwaves of 2024 (Tested and Ranked)

A small microwave can offer a full range of cooking functions with a smaller countertop footprint. While compact microwaves may be less powerful than their full-size counterparts, they are a great budget-friendly option for fast and convenient cooking. You can expect to spend about $60 to $150 on a small microwave, compared to $150 to $300 for full-size models.

To help you find the best microwave for your apartment, office, or dorm room, we researched some of the top smaller microwaves available online, and selected four models to conduct testing. Overall, our winner for the best small microwave was the Toshiba Smart Sensor Microwave . Though not as compact as some of the other models in this review, the Toshiba stood out due to its heating efficiency, preset function accuracy, quiet operation, and signal-muting option.

Toshiba Smart Sensor Microwave

Toshiba Smart Sensor Microwave

This sleek 1,100-watt countertop microwave features a smart humidity sensor, 12 preset functions, 10 power settings, and two defrost modes. We found that its low operating volume and ECO+ mute option make it one of the quietest models in the category.

Our Testing Experience

This medium-capacity model from Toshiba was the highest-performing, most consistent, and quietest microwave tested by our team. In addition to its superior heating performance, it outperformed all but one microwave in preset accuracy and was just one of two units in our lab that comes with a signal-silencing mute feature.

Good for: People looking for a powerful but quiet medium-capacity countertop microwave.

What Are People Saying About the Toshiba Smart Sensor Microwave?

We found that numerous customers complimented the accuracy of the Toshiba’s one-touch settings, remarked on how easy it was to use, and were impressed with its ECO+ mute setting. Some critical buyers we found said the user manual was difficult to understand, while others thought that the microwave wasn’t sturdy and moved too much while it was running.

“Bought this to replace a cheap/basic microwave. I love the express settings (pressing 1 for 1 minute, etc). But the best feature is by far the reheat. I don’t have to figure out how long to set it for, I just hit Reheat and then Start, and it does its thing. I’ve tried it for multiple things, and it always comes out perfectly hot all the way through.” veronica2311 via Amazon
“Unfortunately, the pressure to open the door makes the entire microwave move all over the place. They should have found a way to grip the legs. I got the 1.6 model, and so far it is great as far as functions. I like that the sound turns off, we used the pizza function on a small frozen pizza, and it cooked it to perfection and faster than our last microwave, which was the same size. I like the sensor heating. If they could fix the movement, I would have given this a 5-star rating. Unfortunately, we are a family of eight, and with four teen boys, that’s a big issue for us..” Lovenyah via Amazon

Most Accurate Microwave

BLACK+DECKER Digital Microwave

BLACK+DECKER

This compact, 700-watt stainless-steel microwave oven features six preset functions and a child-safety lock. With a capacity of 0.7 cubic feet, a flush push-button door, and an extremely low profile, we think this model is ideal for small kitchens.

This microwave from BLACK+DECKER boasted the best preset functionality out of all the models our reviews team tested. We found that the popcorn, express cooking, and beverage settings were true to the manufacturer’s claims. We thought its control panel was the most straightforward and intuitive to navigate.

Good for:  People with limited time to spend selecting cooking settings and anyone looking for a low-profile, effective microwave.

What Are People Saying About the BLACK+DECKER Digital Microwave?

We noted that satisfied customers remarked on the BLACK+DECKER microwave’s power-to-size ratio and ease of use. They found the one-touch settings met or exceeded their expectations. A few buyers we saw did experience issues with the door jamming, while others said it was louder than they expected.

“It’s nicer than I expected. It has all the features of larger models, but fits into a small space under cabinets. I really like that it has a button to open. Our last one had a handle that never failed to crack me in the knuckles (I’m left-handed). The reheat plate setting is a great feature and it’s also nice that it has a fast 1 through 6 minute one-button option. It’s also quiet in operation.” Jeffery Gilbert via Amazon
“… Closing the door on this thing sounds like closing a big, tin barn door; it is very loud. I wouldn’t be surprised if my next-door neighbor could hear the door shut. It’s also very loud the moment it starts heating. Apollos via Amazon

Best Budget Microwave

Performance: 2/5 | User Experience: 3/5 | Physical Aspects: 5/5 | Price and Warranty: 4/5

COMFEE' Countertop Microwave

COMFEE’ Countertop Microwave

This 0.7-cubic-foot microwave features nine preset modes, one-touch express cooking, and two defrost settings. With this small microwave, we like that users can choose to turn on ECO mode, which consumes 50% less power than the standard setting.

This 700-watt microwave offers some desirable muting and power-saving features not often seen at this price point. Our testing team liked the COMFEE’ microwave’s easy-to-read control panel and signal muting. However, we found that the black plastic finish made fingerprints and grime highly visible and looked cheap next to stainless and metal alternatives. We quickly learned that this model’s preset functions underperformed across the board. On the plus side, our tests showed that the COMFEE’s manual and express cooking settings performed adequately and within the expected amount of time.

Good for:  Energy-conscious users who want a variety of preset options.

What Are People Saying About the COMFEE’ Countertop Microwave?

Positive reviews we saw frequently mentioned the COMFEE’ microwave’s affordability, convenient size, and reliable performance. A couple of reviewers we noticed, however, claimed that their microwave arrived broken and some expressed frustration at the interface.

“This item was just right for a small space. I don’t like a cluttered countertop. I also don’t use a microwave to cook meals in. Just to warm things up. I like the ease of use. Press 1-5, and the minutes automatically start. You can turn the beep down or off. It is just perfect for what I use it for. Not a loud sound when on. It was a good purchase for me.” ClearlyLiving via Amazon
“We loved the look of the microwave, but after two weeks, we couldn’t get past the difficult-to-use interface. In my opinion, the knob SHOULD be used to set the cooking duration, but its default was selecting cooking modes. To set the time, you had to press several buttons first, and the function names displayed on the screen are far from descriptive. We spent far too much time looking back at the manual to see what everything meant.” Cooper Coldwell via Amazon

Galanz Retro Microwave Oven

Galanz Retro Microwave Oven

This unique, 700-watt microwave comes in retro or modern designs and in a black, blue, green, or red finish. Use the turn-style knob and buttons to choose between timed cooking options, defrosting, and seven preset functions.

Galanz’s 0.7-watt countertop microwave was the most visually unique out of the units we tested. The enameled exterior concealed fingerprints and normal grime better than its competitors. It adequately cooked a frozen Hot Pocket in the time expected. However, our testers found that the Galanz microwave significantly underperformed in defrosting, popping, and beverage modes. We struggled to make sense of its settings and control panel and had to consult the user manual prior to each use.

Good for:  Price-conscious consumers with a specific aesthetic in mind and limited kitchen space.

What Are People Saying About the Galanz Retro Microwave Oven?

Satisfied buyers we found were impressed with the speed at which the Galanz microwave heated frozen food, liked the retro aluminum aesthetic, and its affordable price point.

We did also see some critical customers that expressed issues with shipping damages and indicated that customer service was extremely difficult to reach.

“I love using the dial to set duration times. So easy. No more beep, beep, beep of a number pad. I also really appreciate that when your drink/food is ready it stops beeping when you open the door. Makes perfect sense. Also, the design touches on the side panels are much appreciated. Other manufacturers use ugly flat side panels to save money. This is a functional, well-designed microwave. Bravo!” IYamWatIYam via Amazon
“I love the way this looks. Gorgeous. It even cooks well. It’s not the fastest, but does the job. … There are two main issues I have with this product that come down to factory quality. First, it’s not level. It has tiny legs made of metal that are not adjustable. One of them is dramatically off, and my entire microwave teeters forward when I touch it. … The other more annoying problem is the turntable. The glass plate itself is not the issue, it’s the wheeled ring under it. This microwave has no track to keep it in place so it’s free-floating under the glass plate. Each time you use it, the ring starts to shift out of place until, eventually, the glass plate becomes unbalanced and tips.” Amazon Customer via Amazon

Our reviews team performed rigorous research and personally tested four out of the five microwaves in this review. Our goal is always to recommend units that provide our readers with the best overall user experience in a fair, balanced, and transparent way. To accomplish this, we prioritized the following factors:

  • Performance: During testing, we evaluated each microwave for speed, cooking and defrosting evenness, and accuracy of its preset functions.
  • User experience: This is perhaps the most important factor we consider when testing and recommending products. In scoring each unit for user experience, we looked at how easy it was to set up, how many preset options it offered, and how easy it was to clean.
  • Physical aspects: We measured each microwave’s size to ensure it was appropriate for smaller living spaces and looked at the available finishes.
  • Warranty and return policy: This part of our selection process is straightforward—the longer and more comprehensive the warranty and return policy, the higher the score.

Other Small Microwaves To Consider

In addition to the products above that our team tested in the lab, here are some other highly-reviewed small microwaves worth considering for your home.

Buying Guide for Small Microwaves

Microwaves are an essential kitchen appliance. However, they can take up more space than you have to spare. We put together this microwave buying guide that will help you select the best small microwave to save space in your kitchen.

What sizes should you look for in a small microwave?

If you’re looking for a small countertop microwave, exterior and interior dimensions are two of the biggest factors to consider.

  • External footprint: Externally, most compact microwaves measure 12 to 16 inches deep (front to back), 15 to 19 inches wide (side to side), and 10 to 12 inches tall. Consider the amount of counter space you can dedicate to a microwave and look for options that fit neatly within that space.
  • Interior capacity: Internally, most small microwaves have between 0.5 and 0.9 cubic feet of capacity.

What power levels do small microwaves have?

We measure the cooking power output of a microwave in watts (W). Small countertop models have a power output between 600W and 1,100W. A microwave’s physical dimensions dictate how large—and, therefore, powerful—its motor is. The smaller the microwave, the lower its maximum possible wattage will be. The lower a microwave’s wattage, the longer it will take to heat food and beverages.

What preset modes and buttons should you look for in a small microwave?

Most microwaves, even small ones, feature several buttons to provide customizable cooking and reheating options. Some common preset functions include defrost, express cook, pizza, frozen vegetables, beverages, and popcorn.

What is considered a low noise level for a small microwave?

When in operation, we found that most microwave ovens are about as loud as conversational speech—around 55-60 decibels (dB). Some newer models offer sound-muffling technology, volume control for the keypad and signal, and mute options.

What design elements and finishes should you look for in a small microwave?

Small microwaves are available in a variety of designs and finishes. Modern microwaves have a sleeker appearance with square viewing screens and one-touch buttons. Retro microwaves have vintage features, such as circular viewing windows, dials, and antennae.

What other features should I look for in a small microwave?

Some other features that may stand out in particular models of small microwaves, include sound control, quick keys, convection cooking, child locks, extra racks, smart features, and sensor cooking.

What are the most trusted brands for microwaves?

When buying a microwave, it’s essential you buy from a trusted brand to ensure you’re receiving a high-quality appliance. Some of the best brands for small microwaves on the market are:

  • Amazon Basics
  • Black & Decker
  • Hamilton Beach

Types of Microwaves

Most small microwaves would be categorized as countertop microwaves, meaning they are portable and plug directly into your wall. However, there are also small microwave options available in other configurations.

  • Built-in microwaves are microwave ovens that are built into a recessed cavity of your wall or cabinetry. These microwaves help create a seamless, sleek look in your kitchen that blends the microwave in with the rest of your appliances and cabinets. Most built-in microwaves run larger, but some have a small capacity and dimensions that can fit into smaller spaces.
  • Over-the-range microwaves (OTR) are another type of microwave. These models are designed to be mounted over the top of your range to create a blended design. OTR microwaves typically have a smaller wattage than built-in models but might be an excellent option for those looking for a slim, small microwave that won’t take up counter space.

FAQs About Small Microwaves

Where should i put my small microwave.

We found that most small microwaves are designed to be placed on countertops or tabletops. Keep at least one inch of ventilation space between the unit and the wall behind it. To prevent tipping, ensure that the front of the microwave sits two or three inches back from the counter’s edge.

How can I clean my small microwave?

To clean your microwave , steam the interior by boiling one cup of clean water, then immediately wipe it down with a sponge or rag and dish soap. More stubborn particles may require a scrub with a non-scouring brush.

Do small microwaves have enough power to heat my food?

Yes, small microwaves have enough power to heat your food. While they are generally less powerful than larger models and will take longer to achieve the same temperature, small microwaves have enough power to heat food. When in doubt, refer to the recommended cooking times provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture .

How We Selected Small Microwaves

To provide our readers with the best product recommendations possible, we rely on several key sources of information to help guide our selection process.

Initial research: Our research process began by generating a list of small microwaves with a significant number of verified-buyer reviews and an average customer review rating of 4-5 stars. We looked at positive and negative reviews alike, focusing on information from both satisfied and critical buyers.

We also took into account how durable each product type should be to serve its intended purpose for several years or more. Finally, we used that information to help us evaluate whether each manufacturer’s warranty coverage was adequate and trustworthy.

Expert insights: Through our years of experience, we’ve learned that listening to what others have to say is key to building accurate, well-rounded articles. To complement our in-house expertise, our team looked at reviews and videos from trusted publications and independent testers, spoke with subject matter experts, and drew insights from reader contributions.

Final product selection: We then began fine-tuning our list by replacing older models with the latest versions and eliminating any discontinued models. From there, we pared the list down further by comparing each model’s feature-set and selecting the best-in-class options for a variety of buyers, budgets, and scenarios.

Our Testing Process

Our reviews team rigorously tested each small microwave in our final lineup to recommend products that provide our readers with the best overall user experience in a fair, balanced, and transparent way.

During testing, we evaluated each item for the following:

  • Size and suitability for small spaces
  • Overall performance and accuracy of preset modes
  • Bonus features
  • Areas for improvement and potential deal-breakers
  • Warranty coverage and limitations

small travel microwave

If you prefer a hot lunch, but your office or jobsite doesn't have a kitchen, this portable microwave is the way to go. Simply pack your lunch in the travel appliance and plug it in when you get to your destination. Come lunch time, the meal will be nice and hot. You can even get the microwave in one of five fun colors, such as red, navy blue or gray.

What to Look For

  • Always consider the noise level of the portable microwave before you buy it. Some models run very quietly.
  • The best way to clean your portable microwave is with good old-fashioned dish soap and water. Sometimes, however, you may face some stuck-on foods that are hard to remove. Fortunately, there is a trick to make this tough job much easier. Grab a microwave-safe bowl and fill it with water. Squeeze in a little bit of lemon juice or add a tablespoon of white distilled vinegar. Turn the microwave on for 2 minutes and then wait another 30 seconds before you open the microwave door. The steam will loosen up the food so that you can immediately wipe it away.
  • Most portable microwaves have a removable glass turntable. You can take this out and wash it along with the rest of your dishes.
  • Don’t forget to clean the outside of your microwave, as it’s often plagued with fingerprints and dust. You can use your soapy dishwater and washrag or opt for a glass cleaner with a paper towel.
  • When comparing the cost of portable microwaves, you’ll need to factor in the size, which is typically listed in cubic feet, and the number of watts the microwave uses for power. The Commercial Chef Counter Top Portable Microwave, 600-Watt is one of the more affordable models on the market. You’ll pay the most for the Toshiba Easy Clean Smart Sensor Microwave, 1100-Watt.

Did you know that according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics an astounding 90% of homes across the country own a microwave? It makes sense that Americans are turning toward machines that are convenient, as it seems that individuals are always on the go these days. With school, work, church and extra-curricular activities, it gets harder and harder to find time to cook a full meal from scratch.

The story about how microwaves were invented is an interesting one. In fact, the creator, Percy LeBaron Spencer, actually made the microwave by accident. He was testing a magnetron and noticed the effect it had on food. After creating a metal box to feed the energy into and conducting a few more tests, Spencer filed a patent for his invention. Amazingly, Spencer never even graduated grammar school. He was completely self-taught!

Dedicating precious counter space to a new appliance can be a tradeoff. And the smaller the counter, the bigger the decision. But size and space aren’t the only considerations when buying a small, more compact microwave.

The footprint of a small microwave is only a bit smaller than that of a midsized model (the most popular size), but the performance differences are significant. So you have to decide whether saving a few scant inches is worth all the time you’ll spend waiting for your food to heat up.

You see, heating speed is the Achilles heel of a small microwave. Of the more than a dozen small (some call them compact) microwaves in our tests, only one gets a speed-of-heating rating above the lowest possible score—and that’s the newly tested Danby DDMW007501G1 . In that test, we time how long it takes to heat water when the microwave is at its highest setting, taking the temperature after 5 minutes. “If you run the microwave longer, the food or beverage will eventually get hotter,” says Ginny Lui, who oversees our microwave testing.

When you opt for a countertop microwave with smaller dimensions, you end up with less cooking capacity and lower wattage. Cooking space determines whether you can microwave a plate of food or a baking dish. Wattage is basically the cooking power: the higher the wattage, the faster it cooks. And the dimensions are just that: height, width, and depth.

Here’s how CR categorizes the countertop microwaves in our ratings. Claimed capacity and watts are according to the manufacturer. Dimensions are taken in our lab. (To compare models, you can find this information on the main microwave ratings and on the individual model pages.)

Small Microwaves Claimed capacity: 0.8 cubic feet or less Watts: 700 Footprint: 10 inches high by 17-18 inches wide by 13-15 inches deep

Medium Microwaves Claimed capacity: 0.9 to 1.2 cubic feet Watts: 800 to 1,000 Footprint: 11-12 inches high by 19-21 inches wide by 15-20 inches deep

Large Microwaves Claimed capacity: 1.3 cubic feet or more Watts: 1,000 to 1,250  Footprint: 12-14 inches high by 20-24 inches wide by 19-20 inches deep

(Note: Dimensions below are in inches and are height by width by depth.)

There are a few tasks in which small microwaves perform somewhat on a par with larger models. The best in our ratings score fairly well in heating and defrosting evenness, and almost all score well on quietness. (Of course, if you have to run it longer, it will keep making noise over that extended time.) Here are the small microwaves in our tests with very good Overall Scores. They all cost about $100 or less, so buying one for your first place may be worth considering, given all the caveats. For more options, check our full microwave ratings and recommendations .

Galanz GLCMKA07BER-07

Danby DDMW007501G1

Commercial Chef CHM770B

Insignia NS-MW07BK0

Panasonic NN-SN67HS

Commercial Chef CHM990B

Galanz GLCMKA07BER-07

CR’s take: If cute and retro is your thing, the Galanz GLCMKA07BER-07 is the microwave for you. Bonus: It’s the best small microwave in our tests. (Though that might not be saying much, since small microwaves are typically underpowered.) The Galanz lags at heating speed and may try your patience, but once it gets going, it heats evenly and operates quietly. And it earns a very good rating for defrosting. Plus, it looks good and the price is right.

Watts: 700 Dimensions: 10x18x14 inches

Danby DDMW007501G1

CR’s take: Of the more than a dozen small microwaves in our tests, the Danby DDMW007501G1 was the only one to get above the lowest rating on the speed-of-heating test. And like most microwaves of this size and price, it is practically feature-free with no sensor that indicates when food is done or prompts to guide you through the cooking process. However, heating and defrosting evenness were very good and this appliance is pretty quiet even when running on the highest setting. In our member survey, Danby microwaves earn a very good score for predicted reliability but a poor score for owner satisfaction.

Watts : 700 Dimensions: 10x18x13 inches

Commercial Chef CHM770B

CR’s take: Small microwaves tend to be underpowered, and the Commercial Chef CHM770B is no exception. But it may be all you need for a college dorm or home office. This one is a champ at heating evenness, acing our mashed potato test, but it’s a slowpoke at heating a simple container of water. It’s average at defrosting and pretty quiet. And for the price, it’s worth a look.

Watts: 700 Dimensions: 10x18x13 inches

Insignia NS-MW07BK0

CR’s take: The Insignia NS-MW07BK0 performs better than most small models in our tests. This model’s heating evenness and defrosting earn favorable ratings. And it’s very quiet. But if you’re in a hurry for your food, you’ll have to wait, because its score for speed of heating is disappointing. Insignia countertop models receive a very good rating for predicted reliability, but a bottom-of-the-barrel rating for owner satisfaction in CR’s member surveys.

If You Can Trade Up to a Midsized

Panasonic NN-SN67HS

CR’s take:  For the price, you can’t go wrong with the  Panasonic NN-SN67HS , one of our top-performing midsized countertop microwaves. Both its heating speed and defrosting evenness notch outstanding ratings in CR’s tests. It also evenly heats food, and our testers say it’s easy to operate. It’s a bit noisy when running on high, but typically you run your microwave in such short bursts that the noise might not bother you. As a brand, Panasonic countertop microwaves boast solid ratings for owner satisfaction and predicted reliability in our member surveys.

Watts: 1,200 Dimensions: 12x20x16 inches

Commercial Chef CHM990B

CR’s take: With a smaller footprint than many midsized microwaves we tested, the Commercial Chef CHM990B is worth a look; with 900 watts, it’s more powerful than a typical small microwave. Speed of heating was not actually that speedy, but not as slow as the smaller models. And the price is right. It notched very good scores in all the rest of our tests: heating and defrosting evenness, quietness, and ease of use.

Watts: 900 Dimensions: 11x19x14 inches

If you have a small home or are in the market for something to heat up your lunch in the office, a small countertop microwave oven is the perfect fit! Not all areas are suitable for a large, bulky unit and some households don’t need something that that takes up valuable space.

What is the best small microwave? It is the one that fits your size and capacity requirements. Wattage is important but is irrelevant if you can’t fit the unit in your home, office or apartment.

Best Small Microwave

Be certain to check the interior dimensions of the microwave you plan to purchase. While nearly all microwaves can handle a plate, some may not have the height for a tall cup, glass or your favorite mug.

Reviews Of The Best Small Microwave Ovens

1. nostalgia retro 0.7 cubic foot microwave oven.

Nostalgia RMO770RED Retro 0.7 Cubic Foot Microwave Oven, Cu.Ft Red

The Nostalgia line of kitchen electronics offers unique products with a gorgeous finish; this red microwave has the ultimate in retro styling, with chrome accents and a steel handle.

While this microwave oven features a dial, there are buttons across the bottom as well, so it may take a little work to learn how to program this unit.

With its very distinctive retro style, this model won’t blend with every kitchen, but the right person will love it. It’s a good idea to invest in a microwave that will last for the long term; this is an expensive item to swap out because you’re changing paint colors.

However, your home should make you happy and give you joy. If you want a red or green microwave, go for it! Just measure the space at least twice to confirm the dimensions.

This microwave is 19 inches wide, 15 inches deep and 11 inches tall. The 800-watt motor will give you plenty of cooking power. There’s a bright LED display for easy programming and five different levels of power.

It also features a pretty impressive 12 pre-programmed settings; from warming up a beverage to defrosting meat, you can customize your cooking experience as you wish.

Internal dimensions offer a 10.5-inch turntable and space for a taller cup or glass. If you’re looking for a small powerful microwave without too many buttons, this is the pick for you!

2. MAGIC CHEF 0.7 cu. ft. Countertop Microwave

Magic Chef MCM770W Countertop Microwave Oven, Small Microwave for Compact Spaces, 700 Watts, 0.7 Cubic Feet, White

The Magic Chef 0.7 cubic foot, 700-watt microwave offers all the features of a larger oven – including a child safety lock – with a compact footprint. There are eight quick set menu options and ten power levels.

For those with low cabinets, this microwave is a real plus – it’s only 10.2 inches high. The width is just over 17 inches, and it’s almost 14 inches deep.

If an extra small microwave is all you have room for, pay special attention to the door opening mechanism. This model has a handle formed into the framing of the door which will impact the depth of the unit and may not work in a small space.

It also may limit visibility a bit, but offers a sleek, elegant look and keeps the profile of the microwave low.

While the opening of the front door is 11 inches wide, the turntable is only 8 inches in diameter. This may limit plate sizes for some users, so take care to measure your dinner plates before selecting your personal mini microwave.

3. Kenmore 0.9 Cu. Ft. Countertop Microwave Oven

Kenmore 70923 0.9 cu. ft Small Compact 900 Watts Countertop Microwave with 10 Power Settings, 12 Heating Presets, Removable Turntable ADA Compliant, Stainless Steel

Kenmore has a long-standing reputation for great appliance construction that is well deserved.

This mini microwave oven is 19 inches wide, 14.3 inches deep and only 11 inches tall.

The interior is quite spacious and should easily hold plates, cups and small casserole dishes. Internal dimensions are 13 inches wide by 12 inches deep by 8.5 inches high. The exterior finish is brushed stainless steel, so you’ll have little trouble keeping this microwave clean .

This microwave offers 900 watts of cooking power. There are multiple timed presets, so from popcorn to pizza, this microwave will be easy to use. In addition, you can use this unit simply as a kitchen timer!

4. Farberware Classic 0.7 Cu. ft. Microwave

Farberware Countertop Microwave 700 Watts, 0.7 Cu. Ft. - Microwave Oven With LED Lighting and Child Lock - Perfect for Apartments and Dorms - Easy Clean Grey Interior, Retro Black

Farberware has long been known for great cookware construction, so it should be no surprise that they can add to your cooking joy in other areas too!

This 0.7 cubic foot microwave includes a rotating turntable, an interior light when the microwave is on, a separate timer and a backlit LED display for easy visibility.

The exterior dimensions of this tiny microwave are 17.8 inches wide by 12.9 inches deep by 10 inches high. It should fit easily under most cabinet configurations. The button display is clear and easy to read. Many foods are already programmed in.

Be aware that the interior dimensions are small; the internal height is only approximately 6 inches. However, you should have the space you need to warm up a dinner plate, cup or small serving bowl.

It should also be noted that the latch opening button is low and on the right; this microwave vents to the left, so you’ll need some clearance for your hand and more on the left for the oven to vent.

5. Westinghouse 0.6 Cu. Ft. Counter Top Microwave

COMMERCIAL CHEF 0.6 Cubic Foot Microwave with 6 Power Levels, Small Microwave with Grip Handle, 600W Countertop Microwave with 30 Minute Timer and Mechanical Dial Controls, White

The 0.6 cubic foot white microwave would be a charming addition to any small kitchen. It has some pretty funky retro styling and is 18 inches wide, 13.5 inches deep and just over 10 inches high.

Despite being a small microwave, it offers over a yard of cord, so if you need to move it around, you have quite a bit of flexibility.

The internal dimensions are 12 inches wide, 11 inches deep and 7 inches tall. You’ll have ample space for a plate, a cup or a small serving dish for a side. This microwave vents to the left as you face it, so you’ll need to allow some room for the unit to cool.

While most microwaves feature push buttons, this one uses one dial for cooking intensity and one for the timer. It’s an ideal tool for anyone with vision or dexterity challenges, or for anyone who likes a bit of a retro look.

This model has the lowest power out of all our reviewed microwave ovens, at only 600-watts.

6. Daewoo Retro Countertop Microwave Oven 0.7 Cu. Ft.

Daewoo KOR-7LREM Retro Countertop Microwave Oven 0.7 Cu. Ft., 700W | Mint Green

Daewoo offers another retro microwave with few buttons and little fiddling to do.

There is even a power button in the upper right-hand corner of the microwave if you need to shut the whole thing down.

This microwave will look great in a small space. It’s 17.5 inches wide, 10.5 inches high and only 13 inches deep; with the handle, it’s 14.5 inches deep.

Internal dimensions are 10.75 inches wide, nearly 10 inches deep and 8 inches high. There’s a 10-inch turntable to keep your food heating evenly.

If you don’t have a kitchen clock, you may not care for this microwave; once it powers down, there’s no display.

However, if you struggle to program the stove, microwave and coffee pot to all display the same time, this is one thing you won’t have to worry about!

7. GE 0.7 cu. ft. Countertop Microwave Oven

GE Countertop Microwave Oven, Compact 0.7 Cubic Ft., 700-watt Capacity, 6 Auto Cooking Settings, Kitchen Essentials for the Countertop, Dorm Room or Apartment, Stainless Steel

This small but mighty microwave offers cooks plenty of flexibility and power.

For the space it takes up, you get 700 watts of cooking power and multiple presets for easy cooking choices.

The footprint for this microwave is quite small; it’s only 12 inches tall and 19.5 inches wide. It should be noted that this microwave is 15.5 inches deep, and the placement of the power cord may keep you from pushing the microwave flush against the wall.

Small microwave dimensions can be somewhat skewed by cord placement and door clearance. If you’ve got especially specific dimensions to meet – for example, a cabinet opening or a shelf – this unit may not work in your space.

8. Sharp R-21LCFS 1 cu. ft. Commercial Microwave

Sharp R-21LCFS Medium-Duty Commercial Microwave Oven with Dial Timer, Stainless Steel, 1000-Watts, 120-Volts, One Size

If you’ve got the space, this 1000 watt microwave will stand the test of time and offer you plenty of cooking options.

This unit offers plenty of cooking power in a small footprint and has a little more internal space than other models reviewed here.

Unfortunately, there is an impression that those looking for apartment size microwaves are planning a disposable, temporary purchase. As more people move to cities and live in smaller spaces, durable appliances that will fit into a snug kitchen are critical, and this microwave certainly fills that need.

SEE ALSO: Cuisinart cmw-200 Review

First of all, this microwave comes with a 60-inch cord for placement flexibility. It is 20.5 inches wide, 16 inches deep and just over 12 inches tall.

The internal dimensions are nearly 14 inches wide, 8 inches high and 14.5 inches deep. Your travel cup should fit, as will your dinner plate and serving bowls.

The controls are contained in a lighted dial and the handle is sturdy chrome. The exterior finish is brushed stainless. The look is quite utilitarian, but Sharp has added turquoise highlights for easy reading and a pop of color.

Final Thoughts

If space in your kitchen is severely limited, or if you just don’t need a large over the range microwave , there are a number of units in this list that should work for you. To make the best decision, pick your spot and measure the clearance first.

Our favorite pick is the stylish and distinctive Nostalgia Retro 0.7 Cubic Foot Microwave Oven . Although it’s retro-styling won’t cater to all tastes, we think it’s a fantastic talking point and will add a splash of color to your kitchen.

When making your microwave selection, it’s critical to focus on your needs.

  • If you’re always heating up your travel coffee mug, a tall interior is critical.
  • If dinner plates are most important, you’ll need a larger turntable.
  • For those with low cabinets, a short microwave is a must.

Measure repeatedly and save yourself the headache of returns! Finally, always allow extra space for cord clearance.

Smallest Microwave – Best Small Microwave Oven Reviews

Portable Microwave – Best 12V Portable Mini Microwave Ovens And Stoves For Cars Or Trucks

If you spend a lot of time out on the road and enjoy your lunch nice and warm then a portable microwave oven is the ideal addition to your truck or car if you’re tired of cold food. The space constraints and power requirements make it a challenge to find the ideal product though.

To be honest, there aren’t a lot of portable microwave or mini microwave for car options. Your main options are going to be a small microwave that you run from your car battery via an inverter, or a 12V microwave or a 12V food warmer. We’ve reviewed some of the best portable microwave ovens and portable food heaters that will fit perfectly into your vehicle.

Here’s a quick look at our favorite ways to heat food in a car or truck.

Portable Microwave For Car

Roadpro 12-volt portable oven for car.

If you want something similar to a portable microwave to use in your car then get one of these 12V units. It will do more than just warm precooked food in your truck and will heat up to about 300 degrees.

Considering that water boils at 212 degrees you could technically cook some rice in this if you wanted to.

The real benefit of this portable cooker is that it’s a true 12V oven that plugs directly into your 12V lighter socket of your car or truck. It draws 12 Amps though so you need to check if your socket is rated for that kind of current. Alternatively, you can run a 15A fused power cord to your battery.

It uses 8″ x 3.75″ x 2.5″ aluminum disposable pans to hold the food you’re cooking. We really liked how hot this portable oven got and how easy to clean it is. That being said, it does get a little too hot so don’t forget your food in it unless you enjoy burnt food.

This is a great option if you enjoy a hot meal but don’t have time to stop. It’s also great for camping or tailgating. The construction isn’t the best quality though and the latch will probably break at some point. This makes it more suited to a road trip rather than everyday construction use.

Also, it tends to draw a little too much power for your average car lighter socket. At this low price, you probably won’t mind too much if it only lasts a few months to a year.

Portable Mini Microwave Oven For Car

If you’re looking for a portable mini microwave for your truck that doesn’t get quite as hot then this portable food warmer is a great option. It runs off a 12V lighter socket or 110V AC outlet and uses around 60W on full power.

You simply place your food into the stainless steel container and drop it into the portable oven. Plug it in and wait for between 20 and 40 minutes to warm your food, depending on how cold a day it is.

We like that it’s made from stainless steel and other food-grade materials.

It has a 1.7 Litre capacity which is plenty for one guy’s lunch. If you’re looking for a compact portable oven for your truck then this is hard to beat.

The stainless steel container is dishwasher safe but you’ll need to clean the outer casing carefully without using water.

At under $40 it’s pretty cheap and still a good deal if you need to heat food in your truck.

small travel microwave

Hot Logic Mini Microwave – 12V Portable Food Warmer For Car

12V Portable Food Warmer For Car

Ok, so you’re not going to be doing any actual cooking with this but it works great if you’re looking to reheat pre-cooked food in your truck or car.

This is the 12V version of the very popular Hot Logic food warmer series. Those are also great products but require a small inverter to be used in your vehicle.

The Hot Logic Mini is powered by a standard 12V cigarette lighter socket and gets up to around 175 degrees F.

It takes around an hour to reheat food sufficiently and it is lined with aluminum foil to improve heat retention.

This portable food warmer is flat bottomed so it accommodates a range of different flat food containers of up to 8.75″ W x 6.75″ L x 2.5″ H in size.

It’s made from fabric which makes it easy to pack away or fit into a tight spot but it does make it feel a little flimsy. It’s got a convenient carry strap and it is made from good quality material.

At 1.2 pounds this is one of the more compact portable ovens we’ve seen that actually get the job done.

Whirlpool Portable Microwave For Car, 0.5 Cu. Feet, WMC20005YD

Whirlpool Stainless Look Smallest Countertop Microwave

If you’ve got a fair amount of space in your truck and you want a portable microwave that will do more than just simple reheating then this is one of the smallest microwave options on the market.

It’s just over 15″ wide with a depth and height of about 14″. This makes it the best compact microwave oven for car use.

The 0.5 cubic foot capacity is enough to get a full sized plate in there so you’ll have plenty of space for your lunch. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that it runs on 110V AC which means you’re going to need to power it via an inverter . It puts out a maximum of 750W so you need to bear that in mind when choosing your inverter.

You’ll also need to think about how much drain that will put on your battery if you’re running it for a long time.

Also, you’re going to need a decent set of cables running from your battery to the inverter. Don’t think that this is the kind of microwave you can run from your 12V lighter socket.

If you’re willing to set this up properly though then it’s a great portable microwave option. This is ideal for use in a truck, RV, camper or even a boat.

Portable Microwave For Car and Portable Oven Buying Guide

Do you need a portable microwave to use in your car or will a portable oven do the trick? If you’re camping or in an RV then it makes sense to get a portable microwave because you’re probably going to be doing more than just warming food. The compact unit from Whirlpool is probably your best bet.

If you spend a lot of time in your car or truck and need to warm your lunch then a portable microwave may not be the best solution. In that case, you should rather opt for a 12V portable oven or food warmer.

While these products don’t have all the features of a portable microwave, they get the job done when it comes to warming your precooked lunch.

Some of these portable ovens get hot enough to actually cook. If your food needs to get up to around 280 degrees and stay there for a while then a 12V portable oven will manage that just fine.

Power Supply Considerations

To be truly portable your oven needs to run from 12V, preferably straight from the lighter socket in your car. For simple food warmers this normally isn’t an issue. If you’re using our suggested portable microwave above then this option isn’t going to work for you.

Some portable ovens, like the microwave above, run off 110V AC. This means that to be able to use it in your car you’re going to need an inverter.

In order to choose the correct size inverter, you need to aim for something with a rating of about 15% to 20% higher than the power rating of the microwave. Using the portable microwave above as an example, at 750W power rating you would need an inverter of around 1000W.

This is not the kind of power you will be able to get from your lighter socket. You would need to run decent fused cables from the inverter to your battery.

Some of the 12V portable ovens may be low powered enough to run directly from your cigarette lighter socket. Others, like some of the options above, get really hot and draw more power than the socket can supply. Again, these would need to be wired (with a fuse) directly to the battery of your vehicle.

It’s a good idea to only use the portable microwave or oven for a short period while the car is off. Longer use should only be done with the car running so that your battery doesn’t get drained.

Before deciding on which portable car microwave or portable oven to buy decide whether you will need to cook in your vehicle or simply reheat pre-cooked food. Don’t expect anything too fancy like browning and grilling options or slow cooking features. How small is small enough? Well, select the best spot in your truck or car and then check the dimensions of the options you’re looking at. Lastly, make sure that the inverter (if needed) and cables you’re using are sufficient to power your oven or portable microwave.

Best compact microwaves 2024: save on space with these compact solutions

The list in brief ↴ 1. Best overall : Farberware FMO07ABTBKA 2. Best design : Panasonic NN-SD372SR 3. Best for power : GE JES1145SHSS 4. Best budget: Toshiba EM925A5A-BS How to choose How we test FAQs

The best compact microwaves are the best for smaller spaces and kitchens where you don't want to sacrifice too much countertop space. That makes them particularly good for apartment living, where kitchens aren't always massive, and anywhere else where you don't want your cooking equipment to take over. Whether microwaving ready meals or heating last night's leftovers, these compact microwaves cover all the essentials.

There's more good news: compact microwaves are often more affordable than their bigger siblings, so when you compare them to the best over-the-range microwaves and regular microwave models, you'll often find that they're money savers and space savers. That doesn't mean they lack power, however. While the cheapest models tend to be limited, you don't need to spend much to get 900W or even 1000W of cooking power.

Small microwave ovens aren't necessarily short in the feature department either. Many come with pre-set cooking modes for even more convenient cooking, and some have smart home tech so you can get things cooking before you even walk in the door. And many come with anti-bacterial coatings that can prevent bacteria from building up over time.

It's important to note that compact microwaves are not all the same in interior space. That's important if you want to microwave larger plates or cook for more than one person. We'd recommend looking for models with at least one cubic foot of space; less than that, things get cramped there.

If you're looking for the perfect mix of compactness and convenience, read on: we've rounded up the best compact microwaves for every kind of cook and kitchen. We've also included links to the current best prices for each one, and we've got a dedicated page of microwave deals that can help you shop around even more models.

The best compact microwaves we recommend in 2024

Why you can trust Top Ten Reviews Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

We've rounded up the best compact microwaves that are currently available to help you find the right one for you and your household. While we've not been able to review every single one of these products in person, the first four on our list have been tested in person, so we can wholeheartedly recommend them. As for the rest of these models, we've examined the specs, features, and user reviews to give you a balanced view of how these microwaves compare to each other.

The Best Compact Microwave Overall

1. farberware fmo07abtbka.

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

✅ You want easy pre-sets: You get pre-sets for popcorn, potato, pizza, frozen vegetables, beverages, and dinner plates.

✅ You're on a budget: The Farberware is a very affordable option, as low as $70 at certain retailers.

✅ You're looking for a really small microwave: The Farberware FMO07ABTBKA ties for the smallest size and lowest wattage of all the microwaves we compared, so it'd be great in an RV.

❌ You're looking for something slightly bigger: The smaller size might not be the best if you use your microwave for family meal preparation.

❌ You want SensorCook: This is not one of the microwaves that will sense the moisture levels and adjust cooking times automatically, but it does have a memory button for saving often-used settings.

❌ You want to make popcorn: This one struggled quite a bit with popcorn. It had almost the most un-popped kernels at the end. It did a lot better in the second round, though.

🔎 The Farberware FMO07ABTBKA is arguably the best compact microwave overall because it strikes the best balance between size and functionality. It gets the job done despite being so small. ★★★★½

The Farberware FMO07ABTBKA was by no means perfect in our tests. However, it ranks as the best compact microwave overall, as it is genuinely compact with just 0.7 cubic feet capacity, and it strikes the best balance between this small size, decent cooking performance, and a reasonable price. So it would be perfect for someone who needs a small microwave that gets the job done, whether in a dorm room, a small apartment, or an RV.

Design: At only 0.7 cubic feet, this is tied for being the smallest microwave we tested. Things did seem a little tight inside on some tests, but if you just use your microwave for heating up individual portions it will work fine. The smaller size might not be the best if you use your microwave for family meal preparation.

There is a decent selection of cooking options with the FMO07ABTBKA. You get presets for popcorn, potato, pizza, frozen vegetables, beverages, and dinner plates. You can also use the six express options and cook for between one and six minutes with the touch of one button.

Aside from the cooking options, you can defrost by time or by weight with this microwave. A keypad lock will keep the kids from accessing any of the features.

Performance: The Farberware FMO07ABTBKA turned in a solid performance on our tests: it cooks a baked potato well, can do popcorn evenly, although it might need a second try, and overall cooks evenly and consistently, considering how small it is.

This is not one of the microwaves that will sense the moisture levels and adjust cooking times automatically, but it does have a memory button for saving often-used settings. For instance, if you often cook something at 80% power for 2 minutes and 10 seconds, you can avoid inputting those time and power level settings every time.

Price and availability: We found it for less than $70 on some sites like Amazon, while other sellers like The Home Depot have it for $79.99 - so it is easily available online. The low price means you can afford to replace your old microwave sooner.

The Best Compact Microwave for Design

2. panasonic nn-sd372sr.

✅ You like modern design: This microwave has a modern look and a nice streamlined design on the controls, with slim buttons and a dial.

✅ You need to keep food warm: This is one of only a few models in this price range to offer a Keep Warm function, which uses low-pulsing microwave power to keep foods warm for as long as 30 minutes without continuing to cook them.

✅ You want a wider compact microwave: Even though this model is on the smaller/compact side, it can easily hold a 10.5-inch dinner plate and a mixing bowl that measures 11.5 x 6.5 inches.

❌ You don't like stainless steel: This model is only available in stainless steel, which means it'll need cleaning to prevent sticky finger marks on the outside.

❌ You want an easy-to-use machine: This machine isn't too hard to use, but it does require you to use the user manual, and the control panel is quite a learning curve at first.

❌ You like to use pre-set buttons: There is not a pre-set button for potatoes or anything else on this microwave, except popcorn, though it does offer suggested cooking times on the inside of its door frame.

🔎 The Panasonic NN-SD372SR looks quite special on a countertop because of its unique design, and it performs generally very well, but it does take some getting used to the controls and the way they work. ★★★★

The Panasonic NN-SD372 microwave has a unique look and performed well in our tests. Its old-school controls and stainless steel finish make it look cool, even if it is a little hard to use.

Design: The Panasonic NN-SD372 is an attractive appliance that scored very well in our cooking tests, but this unique look clashes with the fact that the control panel is trickier to master than other microwave ovens. Instead of the pre-set buttons typically found on compact microwave ovens, there are long, horizontal, rather oddly shaped buttons and a pop-out dial you use to set times or weights.

The control panel is not a deal-breaker, but there is a learning curve involved, and for some foods, you need to do a bit of guesswork to try and figure out which setting is best. For a microwave that is easier to use, consider the Farberware FMO07ABTBKA .

Performance: While testing the Panasonic NN-SD372SR, we got mixed results. It produced excellent cooking results for some foods but left cold spots or overheated others. It was the best unit in our potato test, cooking it all the way through without leaving any uneven spots.

It was not perfect on popcorn, but it did a good job of fully popping most if not all, kernels; it left the fewest kernels unpopped out of all of the microwaves we tested, but there were still some burned areas in the final product.

The NN-SD372SR fared well on the consistency tests, with just 8 degrees of temperature difference from one side of the plate of pizza rolls to the other. It also had a fairly even heating pattern when we made a heat map with marshmallows.

Price and availability: It can be found for as low as $183 online at places like newegg.com and $192 on Amazon, while it's fully priced at $219.95 direct via Panasonic. This is a decent price, and this model is one of the few that come with a Keep Warm function, which is rare at this price point.

The Best Compact Microwave for Power

3. ge jes1145shss.

✅ You regularly make popcorn: In testing, this microwave popped almost every kernel and didn't burn any.

✅ You want it to be easy: This GE compact microwave includes popcorn, pizza, and potato buttons, as well as buttons for a beverage, a dinner plate, and a frozen vegetable.

✅ You want reliable cooking results: We felt the GE performed well in every test. It cooks food completely and quickly. It does great on popcorn, preparing every kernel to perfection.

❌ You're on a budget: This model is a little expensive when considering how small it is; there are similar models available for much cheaper.

❌ You want SensorCook functions: This microwave is missing a sensor reheat button, so you have to guess the time your leftovers need and monitor your food to make sure it doesn't overcook.

❌ You'd like a longer warranty: This GE compact microwave only has a standard warranty of one year to protect your purchase; other units offer more coverage.

🔎 The GE JES1145SHSS is a powerful compact countertop microwave that scored well on all of our microwave tests. It's a little expensive when considering that it's a compact microwave, but it cooks well and is simple to use. ★★★★

The GE JES1145SHSS is an impressive compact microwave that scored well during testing.

Design: This GE compact microwave, like most microwaves today, includes popcorn, pizza, and potato buttons. However, it is missing a sensor reheat button, so you have to guess the time your leftovers need and monitor your food to make sure it doesn't overcook.

In addition to these standard pre-sets, the GE includes buttons for a beverage, a dinner plate, and a frozen vegetable. This gives you a good variety, though some other microwaves include even more food settings, such as ones for fresh vegetables and frozen entrees.

Although it's a compact microwave, it can still fit a big mixing bowl, a tall glass, or a standard dinner plate with no problem.

Performance: Although it's missing the convenience of sensor reheating and some pre-sets, it includes enough buttons to help you cook efficiently and other features to place it among the best compact microwaves. It cooks food completely and quickly. The GE aced the first test with its ability to cook a frozen macaroni and cheese meal quickly and thoroughly. We followed the directions on the back of the box and cooked it for a total of 3:30 minutes. The temperature of the meal, when it finished cooking, was 171 Fahrenheit, which is above the recommended minimum temperature of 165 Fahrenheit.

We also cooked potato in this microwave for six minutes, which is the average time it takes to cook a standard-sized russet potato in a microwave. It had a few raw spots, but it was still good overall. So, overall, this compact microwave performed better than most of the others we tested.

Price and availability: It is slightly expensive, but it can be found for cheaper online if you shop around a bit; I've seen prices ranging from $119 to $155. However, there are similar models, like the Farberware microwave listed above for $70, that are much cheaper, and they're pretty much the same in size and performance. Although we think you're paying for slightly more power and an easy user experience with this model, especially when compared to others on this list.

The Best Budget Compact Microwave

4. toshiba em925a5a-bs.

✅ You want nice, even heating: It did just fine on our testing tasks and even impressively had the highest score for heat consistency out of all our units. This meant it heated food evenly from one side of the plate to the other.

✅ You love baked potatoes: The potatoes we microwaved also came out almost perfect by using the potato button. Overall, cooking different types of food scored well.

✅ You like pre-set buttons: You get a nice assortment of pre-sets and power levels with the EM925A5A-BS, including popcorn, potato, pizza, frozen vegetable, beverage, and dinner plate buttons.

❌ You need a compact that's a little bigger: If you want to be able to cook large family dinners, though, this might not be the best bet. Consider the  RCA RMW1414  if you're looking for a larger unit.

❌ You'd like a longer warranty: This compact microwave only has a standard warranty of one year to protect your purchase; other units offer more coverage.

🔎 The Toshiba EM925A5A-BS isn't one of the absolute best microwaves you could pick up, though it still performed practically perfectly on some of our tests, and it struck a good balance between the features on offer and its reasonable price. ★★★

The Toshiba EM925A5A-BS compact microwave isn't the best, but it strikes a good balance between performance and price. There are units with more capacity and more cooking power, but the Toshiba EM925A5A-BS did just fine on most of our tests.

Design: The Toshiba EM925A5A-BS was one of the smaller microwaves we tested, but it was not the smallest. When we loaded it up with a relatively large dinner plate and glass, there was plenty of room left.

It also fits a mixing bowl and a large popcorn bag just fine. If you want to be able to cook large family dinners, though, this might not be the best bet. Consider the  RCA RMW1414  if you're looking for a larger unit.

Performance: The Toshiba EM925A5A-BS microwave is not the most powerful we tested; it only has 900 watts of power, but this should still be enough power for most tasks. It did just fine on our testing tasks and even impressively had the highest score for heat consistency out of all our units.

This meant it heated food evenly from one side of the plate to the other, a nice change when you compare it to some microwaves that leave cold spots in frozen dinners and other dishes.

Overall, cooking different types of food scored well. The Toshiba EM925A5A-BS did a nice job on our tests. It was especially good at maintaining the same heat levels across its cooking surface, and at its price point, we think it could be a worthwhile addition to your kitchen.

Price and availability: The Toshiba compact microwave is very reasonably priced for a model that performs well and fits the bill as a compact that doesn't take up too much space at all. You can easily find it online, for $99.98 at Amazon, all the way up to $114.99 at Lowe's - so don't get caught out when shopping. An affordable, budget-friendly model.

5. Toshiba EM131A5C-SS microwave

With over 50,000 Amazon ratings that average 4.5 out of 5, you can rest assured that this Toshiba microwave has been well-tested by its user base. One reviewer says that "This one operates perfectly and very quietly." However, other users show frustration with the design of the microwave keypad, saying that it can be difficult to read in low light.

It offers 1100 watts and has ten different power levels. It’s available in both black stainless steel and stainless steel, and you can expect 1.2 cubic feet of space to cook your meals.

This compact microwave doesn’t have a bulky back on it as some models do, meaning it won’t take up too much room. The pre-programmed sensor menu means you can simply press a button, and it will automatically cook certain foods using the right settings. Preset options include Sensor Reheat, Sensor Pizza, Potato, Rice, Frozen Veggies, and Frozen Entrée.

Another feature we liked was the ‘sound off’ option, and you can also silence the buzzer on this microwave if you find the noises irritating.

For its price, this Toshiba microwave provides a decent wattage. However, some users did mention they were a little disappointed with the power. Overall, for the price and amount of features you get with this compact microwave, not to mention its sleek finish, the Toshiba EM131A5C-SS is a really solid choice.

6. Hamilton Beach 0.9 cu. ft. Microwave

Walmart reviewers have given this microwave an average rating of 4.2 out of 5. One user praises the cost-effectiveness of the product, saying, "The microwave is best at the given price." However, multiple users have reported the microwave breaking down after a few months of use. To help safeguard against this, we'd recommend registering your product for its 1-year warranty.

It features 900W of power and a 0.9 cubic feet design, which will take up minimal space on your countertop (although it's not the smallest microwave that we feature in this guide).

For those with small children, this microwave oven features a child safety lock to prevent it from being accidentally turned on. There are also six auto-cooking menus that will help you cook and reheat common microwave-friendly foods such as popcorn, potatoes, frozen dinners, or beverages.

While this isn't the most powerful microwave in our guide, 900W should be more than enough for most households. Plus, the Hamilton Beach microwave also has a small array of useful features, such as time and weight defrost, a cooking complete reminder, a door with a handle, and touchpad control.

Farberware FMO11AHTBKB Countertop Microwave

7. Farberware FMO11AHTBKB Countertop Microwave

This Farberware microwave is rated 4.5 out of 5 with 37 customer reviews on Lowes . Users enjoy the size, with one saying, "It is more on the small side, but I was happily impressed with the interior space." However, another user complains about the noise level while in use.

Its capacity is 1.1 cubic feet, but it won’t take up too much space on your countertop. Available for under $100, you’re getting a good amount of space for your money, and you can also take your pick from a stainless steel or black finish. This countertop microwave has a pull handle rather than a push button, and its digital display makes it easy to use.

In terms of functions, you’ll get 10 power levels with the Faberware FMO11AHTBKB, an Express Cook mode, and a Memory Function, which will get to know your cooking preferences. What’s more, you can expect six preset cooking settings including popcorn, pizza, potato, beverage, dinner plate, or frozen vegetables.

Users rate the Faberware FMO11AHTBKB microwave highly, saying it has ‘great features’, and many commented on how ‘stylish’ it looks in their kitchen. Other users also mentioned that for the price, this microwave offered them all they needed. A few reviewers did state that this microwave is quite loud when you’re using it.

LG NeoChef LMC0975ST Countertop Microwave:

8. LG NeoChef LMC0975ST Countertop Microwave

The LG NeoChef LMC0975ST isn’t the biggest microwave in our round-up with 0.9 cubic feet of space, but it has some great features that make it easy to maintain and keep clean.

Over 2,800 Home Depot reviewers have given this LG microwave an average rating of 4.3 out of 5. One user praises it for its "stylish looks and reasonable price" and adds that "in a throw-away society, it's a great choice." However, users who have experienced issues with their microwaves report a lack of customer support from LG.

Complete with LG’s smart inverter. This microwave heats more evenly using precise power rather than blasting your whole dish. Internally, the LG NeoChef LMC0975ST is designed with easy use in mind. The controls are made with smooth glass, and there aren’t any old-fashioned dials to navigate.

The completely smooth outer shell of this microwave makes it easy to clean and wipe down, but inside the LG NeoChef LMC0975ST, there is an anti-bacterial coating that is stain-resistant and aims to prevent build-up inside your microwave. The EasyClean coating means you don’t need to use harsh cleaning products to maintain this microwave. Instead, you can just wipe it down with a damp cloth.

Another simple but clever feature that we like about the LG NeoChef LMC0975ST is its hexagonal stabilizer. This makes the microwave turntable much more solid and less likely to tip - most microwaves just have a three-point stabilizer.

Users rate the LG NeoChef LMC0975ST highly on aspects including style and performance. Other users commented on how easy to use this microwave is and that it’s ‘super quiet.’ A few criticisms come in the form of this microwave being fairly expensive, and a few reviews mention how this microwave is prone to showing fingerprints and marks on the outside.

Best compact microwaves

9. Galanz 0.7 cu. ft. Microwave

If you're looking for something a little different from the sea of black, silver, and gray microwave ovens that are usually on offer, your interest might just be piqued by this retro-inspired design from Galanz.

With over 1,000 reviews on the Walmart website, this Galanz microwave has earned an average rating of 4.3 out of 5. One user says that it's "so cute and functional… [and] easy to use". However, other users are lukewarm about the quality of the microwave itself.

Available in colorways of Blue, Cream, Red, and Yellow, this vibrant microwave oven can breathe life into any kitchen. However, the trade-off on its colorful appearance is a lower-than-average power wattage of just 700W and minimal features. But, if you don't use your microwave often, then this might not matter to you.

While it's not jam-packed with features like other products on this list, this Galanz microwave still has some useful points worth mentioning. It has six different power levels and a 9.6" removable glass turntable. Meanwhile, the controls are made up of delightfully vintage-inspired knobs and buttons to complete the retro look.

This Galanz microwave does have some auto menus and a defrost program, so there are a few automatic features that help to make this a competitive product for those looking for a new microwave oven.

10. Samsung MG11H2020CT

Samsung has a fantastic reputation when it comes to consumer goods, and this high-end microwave proves why.

Lowes reviewers give this Samsung microwave an average rating of 4.2 out of 5. One user remarks that they feel that it's a "very solid, well manufactured, quality product that will last for many years." However, reviewers seem to be split on the grilling function, with some saying that it doesn't work very effectively.

This sleek and stylish microwave oven also features a grilling element, which is great for reheating food such as pizza or grilled cheese. It also has 1,000W of cooking power and ten different power levels to enable you to customize your food prep process to whatever you're cooking.

Meanwhile, the smooth ceramic interior is designed to be easy to clean and not scratch or get discolored over time. The microwave's exterior has a stainless steel finish and electronic touchpad controls.

The turntable has a diameter of 12.5 inches, which is larger than other products within this guide. Meanwhile, there are 12 one-touch cooking options for the ultimate ease of use when cooking or reheating food.

How we test the best compact microwaves

We fired up each microwave and tested them on commonly prepared items like popcorn, pizza rolls, and potatoes. Microwaves that cooked food evenly got higher scores than those that left cold spots or burned spots.

We also looked for units that have food-specific settings and a wide selection of power levels, as well as how good they looked and how easy they were to set up and use.

Hamilton Beach EM0331MZC-X2 Review

The most important feature of any microwave is how well it cooks. Here's what to look for when choosing from the best compact microwaves...

Convenience features in a microwave Most countertop microwaves come with a Quick Cook function, which makes microwaving food even faster. The 30-second key is also a time-saver because you can simply add 30 seconds to the cooking time as your food is cooking.

Sensor cooking is a newer feature only available on a few countertop microwaves. With this, you press the reheat button, and sensors measure the steam that emits from your food to determine when it's done. So, it cooks for the right amount of time.

Pre-set buttons can also be time savers. The most common are popcorn, potato, and pizza. Other pre-set buttons include ones for a beverage, fresh and frozen vegetables, soup, and bread.

Warranty and support One of the most overlooked pieces of information in your user manual is the warranty, and some microwave manufacturers offer a longer warranty specifically for the magnetron. Many manufacturers give you an all-encompassing warranty that covers all parts for the same amount of time.

Dimensions and power The right balance between a small countertop footprint and adequate cubic footage inside can be tough to work out. We were pleasantly surprised by how much the smaller microwaves could fit, so we generally recommend getting the smallest one that makes sense for your household.

However, the smaller units tend to have less overall power. That said, we were pleasantly surprised by how much power didn't really speed up cooking. So you can still get a smaller unit with less power and expect to be satisfied.

Compact microwave FAQS

How long do compact microwaves last.

The average lifespan of a microwave is only about nine years, according to the National Association of Home Builders' Study of Life Expectancy of Home Components. That means lots of folks are in the market about once a decade. Not everyone is ready to throw a broken one out right away, though, of course.

Just like many other home or tech appliances, you can improve or ensure the lifespan of your compact microwave if you know how to care for your microwave , especially how to clean a microwave . If you need any guidance with this, we've put together a great page of cleaning hacks for microwaves .

Are small microwaves powerful enough to cook food properly?

You can rely on compact microwaves to cook your food properly thanks to their wattages, which range between 650W to 1950W. Obviously, the higher the wattage, the quicker this will be done.

These appliances are powerful enough to help serve a range of foods and usually have defrost settings. Many models also have adjustable cooking temperatures so that you have a little more control depending on what you’re cooking.

What is the average small microwave size?

The size of a microwave is measured in cubic feet. In our guide, we’ve included compact microwaves that range from 0.7 cubic feet to 1.2. But generally speaking, a compact microwave can range from 0.5 cubic feet to 1.3 cubic feet.

Anything above that, so from 1.4 to 2.0 cubic feet, is considered family-sized or full-sized. A compact microwave is perfect for those living alone or a couple. But also consider the size of the dishes you will be using inside of your compact microwave.

The smallest microwave size (0.5 cubic feet) is made to fit most 10-inch dinner plates – but that’s all. So, you won’t be able to reheat leftover foods in large casserole dishes without decanting them to a smaller plate or dish.

Are compact microwaves suitable for RVs?

If you spend a lot of time vacationing in your RV, or if you live in one full time, having access to a microwave will be pretty high on your agenda. After all, these appliances are excellent for putting together a quick and easy meal, especially if you’ve just had a long day of driving.

When it comes to installing one of these in your van, you’ll probably want to go as small as possible, as space can be sparse at the best of times. Beyond that, you also might want to opt for a lower voltage to avoid tripping out your power supply. This might involve a longer microwaving period and more frequent stirring to ensure cooking is thorough, but it will save you from power outs.

You shouldn’t just opt for any old space-saving microwave, though, as your new device needs to be versatile enough to earn its small spot in a cramped caravan. Of course, you’ll need a microwave that covers the basic pre-sets such as potato, pizza, or soup, but as it’s unlikely you’ll have a wide selection of kitchen appliances on hand, you may also want to invest in a microwave that can handle a little more complexity, such as frozen food and bread too.

What to consider when choosing a small microwave.

While it’s easy to assume that all high-end microwaves offer similar performance, a number of factors affect their functionality, including type, power capacity, dimensions, settings, availability of additional features, and more. Keep reading to learn about some of the most important features to consider when choosing the best small microwave for your kitchen.

Choose from several types of microwaves:

  • Countertop models are the most popular, with two-thirds of Americans opting for this style. They simply need to be plugged into an electrical outlet, so installation is a breeze. They can be moved around as needed. Most small microwaves on the market are of the kitchen countertop variety.
  • Over-the-range (OTR) microwaves are mounted above the stovetop and include an exhaust fan to double as a range hood. Shopping for an over-the-range microwave can be tricky because it must fit perfectly in the available space. Professional installation is generally recommended.
  • Under-cabinet microwaves are similar to over-the-range models but are not suspended over the stove.
  • Built-in microwaves are installed flush with kitchen cabinets for a cohesive aesthetic. While they do save on counter space, they tend to be expensive and are difficult to install.
  • Convection microwaves circulate hot air to speed up cooking times. They also have advanced capacities for browning and crisping.

Microwave capacities are measured in cubic feet. Capacities generally range from 0.5 to 2.2 cubic feet. Those looking for a small microwave should consider models with capacities of 1.3 cubic feet or less. Microwaves with a 0.5-cubic-foot capacity are still large enough to accommodate a standard 10-inch dinner plate.

While capacity does influence a microwave’s dimensions, it’s not the only figure to consider. Some models are made with bulkier siding, increasing their size even if the interior capacity remains the same. Countertop microwaves are typically between 18 and 24 inches wide, 14 and 16 inches deep, and 9.8 and 13.8 inches tall.

Power Capacity

Microwave power capacities range between 500 and 1,200 watts. Higher wattage means that food will cook more quickly and evenly. Keep in mind, however, that higher wattage is associated with higher price points. Countertop microwaves with less than 700 watts may cook food slowly or unevenly.

Most prepackaged foods assume a cooking power of 1,000 watts when providing cooking instructions. Smaller microwaves generally have lower power capacities. Look for a compact model with a power capacity of between 700 and 1,000 watts for the best results.

Most microwaves are powered by transformers, but some upgraded inverter microwaves have more consistent cooking. Transformer-powered microwaves cycle between full power and zero power at lower settings, while inverter microwaves maintain a constant temperature.

Interior Features

When shopping for a microwave, consider its interior features:

  • Nearly all microwaves include turntables that rotate food to guarantee even cooking. Ensure that the turntable of a compact microwave is large enough to hold your household’s dinner plates. Look for a model with a turntable that can be removed and hand-washed or put in the dishwasher.
  • Some microwaves come with interior racks, allowing you to cook two or more dishes simultaneously. These racks are removable and may be dishwasher safe or may require hand-washing.
  • An interior LED display light lets users monitor food as it cooks.

Controls and Settings

Microwaves come with a variety of settings and cooking presets:

  • An “Add 30 seconds” button is handy for food that just needs a little longer.
  • Auto-defrost settings optimize thawing times based on the weight of the food being defrosted.
  • Cooking presets for specific foods—like popcorn or pizza—automatically choose a cooking time and power setting.

Look for a model with large, clearly marked buttons. A backlit LED display provides improved visibility in low-light conditions. Smooth control panels are easy to wipe clean, while interfaces with buttons or knobs can accumulate dirt and require more extensive cleaning.

Smart Technology

Many modern microwaves feature smart sensors that detect moisture levels in the food you’re cooking to regulate cook times and prevent overcooking.

More high-tech smart microwaves connect to Wi-Fi networks and can be controlled using a smart-home assistant, smartphone, or tablet. Some models allow users to scan the barcodes of prepackaged foods and then search their internal databases to determine cook times.

Additional Features

Some microwaves include other features to increase safety or improve functionality.

  • A child lockout feature forces users to input a code before use to prevent young children from using it.
  • A silent mode eliminates all auditory alerts, which is perfect for quiet late-night snacking.
  • A grill function sears the outside of the food.
  • A delayed start time allows users to program a cook time in advance.
  • An eco-mode setting reduces standby power usage.

While some of the most affordable countertop microwaves have simple black or white plastic finishes, most high-end models feature stainless steel exteriors. Match your microwave to your fridge, stove, dishwasher, and other kitchen appliances for a consistent aesthetic. Alternatively, choose a model with a colorful retro finish to create a visual focal point.

Ready to reheat? Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about microwaves.

Q. How do you know what size microwave to buy?

Choose a microwave based on your available counter space. Microwaves with capacities of 0.5 cubic feet can accommodate a standard 10-inch dinner plate, while a larger microwave is necessary to fit larger dishes and cookware.

Q. What can a smart microwave do?

Smart microwaves connect to a Wi-Fi network and can be controlled using a smartphone, tablet, or smart-home assistant device. Some smart microwaves can scan the barcode on a food’s packaging to automatically determine the cook time and power.

Q. Can any microwave go over the range?

No, only specially designed over-the-range microwave ovens should be placed above a stovetop to ensure adequate ventilation and heat resistance. These types of microwaves usually have vents on their undersides, which are used to ventilate cooking on the stovetop underneath it.

Q. How do you make a countertop microwave look built-in?

Many manufacturers sell trim kits that make standard countertop microwaves appear as if they’re built into kitchen cabinetry. When this is not an option, consider purchasing a microwave that matches the rest of your kitchen appliances so it blends in well with the overall set.

Q. Can you hang a countertop microwave?

To suspend a countertop microwave, you must purchase a microwave mounting kit. These are usually quite simple to install, but it’s important to ensure the kit is the correct size to support the weight of the microwave.

Q. How do I clean my small microwave?

To prevent damage or odors on the interior, you should clean a microwave by wiping down the interior surfaces with a damp rag or paper towel and then using a combination of baking soda and vinegar or a commercial cleaner to scour off grease and food stains.

Q. How should I recycle a microwave?

As with any household appliance, a microwave should be recycled by taking it to a local recycling center.
