This place was amazing. It's something that I've always wanted to do. It's only $18, which is a good price for what you actually get to do. Once you buy your ticket, you go through two walk through interactive showrooms. It's two levels, you get to open doors, type on type writers, listen to music, that sort of thing. All of which made it really cool to actually take time to learn and not just shuffle people up to the top. The elevator is where I got nervous because I'm personally afraid of them. But the lady taking us up there was so patient and kind when it came to that and gave probably the best customer service in that field I've ever received. The top has really nice views as well as a restaurant. We didn't stop to have anything in there, but it sure looked beautiful, and we thought, "Maybe next time." I 100% recommend this place to anyone and everyone, tourist or not.

My boyfriend and I came here upon a friend's recommendation. I'm so glad we did! They provide a discount for healthcare workers. It's a historic observatory and gives another beautiful view of Seattle. There is a restaurant at the top as well. We were crunched for time as we had a tour scheduled after, but if we return to Seattle, we'd love to check out!

I ordered my tickets via Groupon, but they said to never book it via Groupon 'cause they never get notified. I showed my proof of purchase and was able to go in. There's a mini museum where you can read fun facts and then you take the stairs and to the elevator. The elevator was pretty cool and vintage style. Once you reach the top, there are no areas to sit unless you're dining in. That sucked because I was tired from walking all day and wanted to sit down for a bit, but there were no seatings available. The view was nice, but once you're outside, it's like you're in a birdcage, it wasn't glass windows, it was railings. It was nice to visit and check out for the first time though! Tip(s): - Book via their website - No seating areas at the top except if you're dining in - They do have a restaurant at the top floor

Ever been up in the Space Needle? Well, Smith Tower is the next best thing, if not better. Known for being the first skyscraper ever built in Seattle and the tallest building west of the Mississippi River back in 1914, Smith Tower is a historic site indeed and beautiful, nonetheless. Skip the crowded Space Needle and enjoy the view of Seattle from Smith Tower. It's just as magnificent and you get more of an experience and better bang for your buck. Check in at the front desk and browse the small gift area as it is the only one. Then listen to a quick spiel about the museum and a few safety items. The staff were awesome and knowledgeable about Smith Tower! I suggest taking your time while walking through the museum and also getting in on the fun. Meaning, pick a pamphlet of a real-life Seattleite and enjoy an interactive experience, while learning about the rich history of Seattle and the Smith Tower. The architecture is stunning with beautiful marble all around and even bronze plated elevators. The ride up was speedy and exhilarating. There are 38 floors, but the observation deck is on the 35th. No complaints here, as the view is quite high and viewed from an open-air deck. No matter how afraid of heights I am, I always like to push my limits and the view was indeed worth it. There is also a small restaurant and bar at the top if you want to enjoy some small bites and a cocktail. The view is spectacular, so stay a while and soak it in.

Love smith tower. What a great place to get a drink and check out the city. Our server (Wanda) was amaizng and took care of us so much. Their Old Fashion was great along with the rest of their drinks. The food looks good but we didn't get any of it. Will def hit this place again.

Had a party of eight here for drinks and dinner and to watch the sunset. Turned out to be a spectacular evening. The atmosphere is unbelievable and I will definitely be back. It's also nice as there is a fence around the whole perimeter when you walk outside so you're not wanting to jump lol. Food was excellent as well as the drinks. The dish with the noodles apparently needed more sauce according to my friends. The chocolate ganache tart is truly a winner except for one serious thing. It's served chilled and I told the maitre d it's such a disservice to serve it that way. You need to give it like 15 or 20 seconds in the microwave to make the chocolate room temp and heat up the caramel underneath just a little bit and then it would be an absolute five-star winner.

The observatory on the 34th floor was definitely a fun experience. You can tell these people that work there love their jobs and those who created the historical walkway before you get to the elevator to go up show they did their best to preserve the buildings history. I would've been cool to know if/how you can get to the 42nd floor since the highest you can go for the tour was the 34th floor. They also have paper and instructions on using one of the old type writers and it still works! Fun experience, would definitely recommend if you're in town just visiting or just moved and want to know more about the city.

I took a 6pm guided tour at the museum and it ended up being just me. The tour was good, but after it ended I was able to skip the wait and get a table at the observation deck level. They gave me a seat with a view, and the food was amazing. I'd highly recommend the whole experience!

Yes, it's a tourist trap. But it's a very cool view. Well worth the visit.

Smith Tower Observatory

Enjoy 360 degree views of Seattle from the 35th floor of a vintage skyscraper.

The Smith Tower Observatory is on the 35th floor of the Smith Tower building in Seattle's Old Town, and also includes a speakeasy themed bar.

When it was completed in 1914, the Smith Tower was the tallest skyscraper in the United States outside of New York. For nearly fifty years it was also the tallest building on the West Coast until the Space Needle eclipsed it in 1962.

Tickets can be purchased to the Smith Tower Observatory at  506 2nd Avenue , at the  Smith Tower Provisions Store .

10 best things to do at Smith Tower Observatory

1. Purchase a ticket at the  Smith Tower Provisions Store.

Purchase a ticket to the Smith Tower Observatory at the  Smith Tower Provisions  general store at 506 2nd Avenue , just south of Seattle's downtown.

The Smith Tower Provisions Store has been beautifully staged to resemble an early business. It features a cafe and vintage soda fountain, with sandwiches, salads, and drinks, and a great selection of Smith Tower themed gifts and souvenirs.

When the Smith Tower opened in 1914, it had six shops on the main floor, and a restaurant, beauty shop and barber in the basement. There were a total of 540 offices inside the building, including two telegraph offices and a telephone booth.

2. After purchasing your ticket, follow the signs and take three steps down to the " Legends of Smith Tower " exhibits.

smith tower tour

3. Browse fascinating exhibits about the Smith Tower's ambitious construction.

The Smith Tower was built by L.C. Smith of the Smith-Corona typewriter fortune, who was based in Syracuse, New York.  Seattle was booming after the Klondike Gold Rush, and he thought it a wise property investment.

The Smith Tower took three years to build from 1911 to 1914, at a cost of $1.5 million. Originally the plan was for a 25 story building, but Smith's son convinced him to compete with the lofty skyscrapers going up in New York.  Therefore, the building gradually increased to 42 stories!

The Smith Tower was designed by New York architectural firm Gaggin & Gaggin, who had never constructed anything higher than 5 stories.

smith tower tour

On opening day on July 4, 1914, there was excitement in the air, because Seattle's Smith Tower was the tallest skyscraper in the world!  This 42 story building has 21 stories in the main building, and 21 stories in the tower.

4. Take the original marble stairs in Smith Tower, that lead to the lobby and elevators.

smith tower tour

5. Admire the elegant, marble hallway at the elevator level, with a row of seven copper and brass elevators with latticed doors. One of the elevators still has its original DC motor!

smith tower tour

6. An attendant will whisk you up the 35th floor and Observation Deck at Smith Tower, on the manually operated Otis elevator.

smith tower tour

7. Step out of the elevator into the beautiful  Temperance Bar , and purchase some prohibition-themed food and cocktails.

Choose from delicious food selections, like a bento box, prawn cocktail, yummy sandwiches, salads, flatbread pizzas, and desserts.  There's also beer and wine, cocktails and spirits, and non-alcoholic temperance drinks like a house made ginger beer, and a Lil' Tommy Collins.

smith tower tour

8. Admire the Chinese decorative features in the Temperance Bar.

The Temperance Bar at Smith Tower is an interesting combination of 1920s style temperance bar, with a Chinese twist!

This is because this  beautiful room was known as the  Chinese Banquet Room  for many years before being closed in 2014.  The black and gold carved teak ceilings from the Chinese Banquet Room are still there, as is the Chinese Wishing Chair.  Legend has it that anyone sitting on the Chinese Wishing Chair will receive a wedding proposal within one year!

The Chinese Wishing Chair was gifted to the builder of the Smith Tower (L.C. Smith) by Chinese Empress Dowager Cixi. Chinese Empress Dowager Cixi ruled China from 1861 to 1908, and was a trailblazer and feminist, banning the practise of foot binding in China, and openly encouraging education for women.

The bar re-opened in 2016 as the  Temperance  bar and thankfully retained many of it's original Chinese features.

smith tower tour

9. Step outside to the open air deck at Smith Tower, to enjoy incredible 360 degree views of Seattle and Puget Sound.

smith tower tour

10. Look up at the Smith Tower Observatory on the 35th floor, just below the pyramid.

After you leave the Smith Tower building, look back up at it from street level to admire its impressive architecture. The 35th floor Smith Tower Observatory is visible, just below the pyramid.

It's fascinating to know that the upper three floors of the Smith Tower pyramid used to contain a water tower.  The water tower was removed in 2010 and the space converted into a three-story penthouse leased to a family.  The rest of the floors are leased for office space.

The Space Needle isn't the only way to enjoy a bird’s-eye perspective of Seattle. Smith Tower is Seattle's oldest skyscraper, and when it was built in 1914 it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River. The 35th-floor observatory that was part of the original construction remains open today, offering 360-degree views of the city. The same floor also has a cocktail bar. In addition to office space, the tower also houses ground-floor retail, special event spaces and historical exhibits.

While the stunning views are the reason to go to the top of the tower, the food and beverages win high marks from reviewers as well, though some find the selection to be limited. Recent visitors also appreciated the self-guided tour showcasing historical information about the tower before enjoying the elevator ride to the 35th floor. For more information about the tower’s past, including its Wishing Chair, consider signing up for one of the 45-minute guided “Talking Tours.”

Access to the observatory is available Wednesday through Sunday. From October through April, the observatory is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. From May through September, the observatory is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Sunday, and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Visitors can purchase tickets for $22 (you’ll have to purchase a ticket even if you just want to go to the bar). Smith Tower stands near Pioneer Square and can be reached using the same streetcar, the First Hill line, that stops there. For more information, visit the official website .

#1 Pike Place Market

Since 1907, this bustling market near the downtown waterfront has been the go-to place for local produce. Today, you can find almost everything, from local artwork to vinyl records. Plus, the flower market and fish tossing are particular must-sees, according to reviewers. Though Pike Place Market is one of the most tourist-heavy attractions in Seattle (plan to run into crowds, especially on the weekends) that's no reason to scratch it off your to-do list. Recent visitors said the abundance of vendors and lively atmosphere make it an experience you shouldn't pass up, no matter how busy it gets.

The streets surrounding Pike Place Market are peppered with restaurants and coffee shops, and there's an information booth just west of the marketplace at First Avenue. If you want a little help navigating the massive market, guided tours and food tours are available from third-party companies.
