On an introductory dive, you’ll learn all the skills you need from a qualified dive instructor.
For up to 30 minutes, you’ll explore the underwater world with an up close view of the colourful corals and tropical fish in a small group.
Enjoy the feeling of weightlessness in the peace and quiet under the surface.
You may be lucky enough to spot a sea-turtle pass close by or a large wrasse or black tip reef shark.
Certified Scuba Dive on the Great Barrier Reef
Many scuba divers travel the globe to explore this famed World Heritage listed underwater environment.
Yet there’s something truly special about embarking on a diving expedition from the shores of Mission Beach; it is the birthplace of the Great Barrier Reef marine park, world heritage listed, and protected to ensure its pristine domain.
In the pinnacles, and bommies (coral mountains) it’s a given that you’ll discover a myriad of marine life; some which are found nowhere else!
On a 30 minute certified dive, experienced divers have shared how some of the coral found here is amongst the most colourful ever seen.

Mission Beach Snorkel Tour Review
Mission Beach snorkel tour to Beaver Reef, on the Great Barrier Reef. Full day adventure onboard Reef Goddess, visit two reef sites, with up to 3 hours snorkel time. Cruise out into the blue to see coral gardens, swim with sea turtles, starfish, staghorn corals and lots of lovely little reef fish. Amazing weather, great family day out.
Mission Beach snorkel tour. From Clump Point to coral gardens. Making memories.
Mission Beach Snorkel Tour With Mission Beach Dive
Mission Beach Dive is one of the only operators to run Mission Beach snorkel tours to the Great Barrier Reef and they don’t operate every day, so make sure you plan and book ahead for this experience. We jumped on board their Reef Goddess for a full day snorkel trip, visiting two reef destinations – Eddy Reef and Beaver Reef. It was family friendly, with lots of kids on board.
“We had never visited the Great Barrier Reef from Mission Beach, so were unsure what to expect. Couldn’t have picked a better day weather wise. Flat blue sea, warm waters and coral gardens teeming with all of our favourites, including colourful chromis, starfish, giant clams and Green Sea Turtles. There was even some diving dolphins by the boat during lunch.” – Julie Johnston
Beaver Reef A Great Snorkeling Location
Beaver Reef is one of the 3,000 coral reefs in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (approx.) and is classified as a Green Zone, with no fishing allowed. It’s about a 90-minute boat ride from Mission Beach, when you travel on Reef Goddess. Beaver Reef is suitable for scuba divers and snorkelers, with a max depth of around 20m and coral gardens rising up to within a few meters from the surface. Coral cover is excellent, with a combination of hard and soft corals, on bommies, walls and shelves. During our snorkel we saw blue and orange starfish, beautiful giant clams, anemonefish, angelfish and more.
Eddy Reef was the other stop of the day. The coral was not as abundant here, but there was lots of marine life and our son loved jumping from Reef Goddess’ top deck down into the clear waters below. The medium sized boat provides a comfortable ride to and from Clump Point at Mission Beach to the Great Barrier Reef, seating is on the lower level and top deck, or head up to the bow and dangle your legs over the side to enjoy the splash of the waves on your feet.
Mission Beach Snorkel Tour What You Get
We went on the Mission Beach Dive ‘Full Day Snorkel the Outer Great Barrier Reef’ tour, cruising on their Reef Goddess vessel. It departed Clump Point at Mission Beach at around 8.30am and returned to the mainland around 4pm. The day included visits to two separate reef locations – Beaver and Eddy Reef – but they can choose between several reef sites and will pick the best on the day, to maximise your experience pending weather and conditions.
Their Mission Beach snorkel tour includes the use of mask, snorkel and fins. The crew provides a safety briefing and snorkel demonstration during the outward journey. They also provide tips and advice on the best places to snorkel (and not to) at each reef site. Lunch is included and is served buffet style, with a selection of cold meats and salads, fresh prawns and bread rolls. Beverages could be purchased and are in addition to the tour price.
About these products , we are not a direct booking agent but have a partnership with Viator to allow us to make a small commision from any bookings you make from our site, this keeps the engine going and fuels our drive to create the best independant diving and snorkeling advice.
We went in September. Clear water, colourful reef, with lots of coral and fish.
Questions About Snorkeling From Mission Beach
Can you snorkel off mission beach.
Yes you can snorkel directly off Mission Beach, but honestly there is not too much to see. If you want to ‘see’ the Great Barrier Reef, then you need to go to it.
How far is Beaver Reef, on the Great Barrier Reef, from Mission Beach?
As the crow flies, Beaver Reef on the Great Barrier Reef is about 40km offshore from Mission Beach.
How long does it take to get to Beaver Reef from Mission Beach?
When travelling with Mission Beach Dive, on their Reef Goddess vessel, it takes about 90 minutes travelling time from Clump Point to Beaver Reef.
How much does it cost to go to the Reef from Mission Beach?
We booked the Mission Beach Dive ‘Full Day Snorkel the Outer Great Barrier Reef’ tour, cruising on their Reef Goddess vessel. At the time of travel [September 2022] this cost $210 for Adults and $130 for Children. A Family Rate of $680 for 2 Adults and 2 Children.
Does Mission Beach have stingers?
Yes, Mission Beach does have stingers during a seasonal period. This is true of much of Queensland’s north eastern coastline. Mission Beach Dive does provide lycra suits which provide protection from the sun and the stingers.
Is the reef better in Mission Beach or Cairns?
We will answer this one according to our own personal experiences. We have been on every reef trip from Cairns, visiting islands, outer reef pontoons, outer reef destinations and coral cays. We thought Beaver Reef was comparable with some of the outer reefs from Cairns. Eddy Reef not so much.
Is the reef better in Mission Beach or Whitsundays?
Again, will answer this one according to our own personal experiences. We think the Whitsundays is a fantastic sailing and island destination. We think Cairns and Tropical North Queensland is a great Great Barrier Reef destination. In our experience, snorkelling at Mission Beach was much better than snorkelling at the Whitsundays – the corals are closer to you, visibility is better and overall, there was more ‘reef’ to ‘see’ at Mission Beach.
Can I fly my drone on the reef at Mission Beach?
Yes, you can at Mission Beach. No, you can’t on Mission Beach Dive or Reef Goddess. They have a strict no drone policy, so leave the DJI at home 🙁
Snorkeling from Mission Beach What You Need To Know
Mission Beach Dive do not operate every day. If you are planning a Mission Beach holiday and want to include a snorkel trip to the Great Barrier Reef in your itinerary, it’s best to plan and book ahead to avoid disappointment. 7 Fantastic Spots To Go Snorkeling In San Diego
S an Diego gets plenty of recognition for its idyllic beaches and rugged coastline, but many don’t give credit for its fantastic snorkeling.
It may come as a surprise to you that snorkeling in San Diego is one of the best ways to enjoy a beach visit. Colorful marine life, huge kelp beds, and sea caves are all waiting to be explored. And did you know that you can even snorkel with sharks in San Diego? Each summer, leopard sharks come to La Jolla to hatch their young and snorkeling is the best way to see them. Don’t worry, they are totally harmless. You should still keep your distance and never touch or disturb them in other ways.
We’ve created a comprehensive guide for eager snorkelers heading to San Diego. Most of the snorkeling spots are located in the neighborhood of La Jolla , but there are some San Diego snorkeling spots closer to downtown as well. This article is complete with the top snorkeling spots, must-do tours, and the best-rated equipment and everything else you might want to know about snorkeling in San Diego.
Best Spots To Go Snorkeling In San Diego
La jolla cove.
La Jolla Cove is, without a doubt, San Diego’s most famed spot for snorkeling. A title it most definitely deserves.
Part of the La Jolla Underwater Park , during summer, enhanced visibility in this underwater park allows snorkelers to swim with leopard sharks and vibrant garibaldi fish. The sea lions which lounge by the rocks may even join you!
You can rest easy knowing that lifeguards are permanently stationed here, making it a safe spot to explore for confident swimmers.
You can find paid parking at the nearby La Jolla Financial Building. For those who arrive early enough, you should be able to snag free street parking for up to 2 – 3 hours. Don’t stay underwater too long or risk a hefty fine for overstaying your parking limits.
La Jolla Shores Beach
Staying in La Jolla but heading a bit further north is La Jolla Shores.
La Jolla Shores is a family-friendly beach where kids can get in on the snorkeling action thanks to calm conditions and shallow waters.
You have the option to bring your own gear or rent some from one of the many snorkel rental spots in the neighborhood.
Easily accessed behind the Marine Room restaurant, swimmers can dive by the kelp beds and spot the sting rays that frequent the waters.
Similar to La Jolla Cove, this area tends to get busy later in the day. Start your day early and find a space at the free parking lot right on the beachfront.
Turtle Town
There are no prizes for guessing why this spot in La Jolla’s marine sanctuary got its name. Turtle Town is home to adorable young and old sea turtles swimming alongside schools of brightly colored fish.
Known as one of San Diego’s closely guarded secrets, it’s easy to see why it’s gotten this reputation, it can be notoriously tricky to find.
Between The Marine Room restaurant and La Jolla Cove, look out for red and green kelp plants, where the turtles tend to congregate.
Due to its hard-to-reach location, this spot is best for avid snorkelers and strong swimmers. This spot isn’t recommended for little ones.
Seven Sea Caves
Yet another La Jolla snorkeling hot spot is the Seven Sea Caves. These are located just east of La Jolla Cove and consist of seven uniquely named caves that line the coast.
Join the halibut, mackerel, and rays which spend their days swimming beside caves named Clam, Shopping Cart, and Jim.
Accessed from the same entry points as Turtle Town, this is also a popular spot for swimmers and kayakers . This spot is best explored through group tours which can guide you to the safest sites. Additionally, it’s advisable to leave the younger snorkelers at home for this one.
Devil’s Slide
Close to the Seven Sea Caves is Devil’s Slide, which is a relatively challenging place for a San Diego snorkeling experience.
Though the waters are shallow, this area sits at the base of the sea cliffs, making it difficult to reach.
Small fish, like zebra perch and anchovies, can be found along the cliffside, while sea lions and rays are also commonly spotted. With a bit of luck, snorkelers can cast their eyes on horn sharks and octopuses.
If you’re not the strongest of swimmers, Devil’s Slide may not be the safest choice. Especially as it’s not the most accessible area for lifeguards.
Mission Point Beach
We’re moving away from snorkeling in La Jolla this time and heading further south towards downtown. Cue chilled-out Mission Point Park.
Located on Mission Bay, the beach here has some of the most pleasant waters for snorkeling in San Diego.
Its warm and calm conditions make it the perfect place to take the kids.
Often an underrated spot for a glimpse of marine life, you won’t have to worry about getting here early. There are plenty of free parking lots nearby.
Park up and take to the sea, where you’ll find kelp fish, senoritas, eels, and octopus.
Shell Beach And Boomer Beach
It’s clear by now that La Jolla is home to the majority of San Diego’s most desirable snorkeling spots. For this reason, it can be difficult to avoid the crowds which flock to the most well-known locations.
Just north of Children’s Pool Beach are the quieter Shell and Boomer beaches. These spots have no stairs down to the shore, requiring a little climbing. But the result is a much more peaceful beach when you get to the end.
Swim out until you reach the kelp beds, where you can swim amongst friendly sea lions and countless sardines.
If luck is on your side, you may cross paths with a migrating grey whale or even see harbor seals chilling out.
Due to the challenging climb down and the rougher seas, snorkeling here is only recommended for experienced swimmers.
