The history of St. Thomas dates back thousands of years, with evidence of early settlements by the Ciboney and the Arawaks. However, it was the arrival of European explorers in the late 15th century that truly shaped the island’s destiny.

In 1493, Christopher Columbus sailed through the Caribbean and made his first contact with the native inhabitants of St. Thomas. The island eventually fell under Spanish control, but it wasn’t until the 17th century that European colonization took hold.

In 1672, the Danish West India Company established a trading post on St. Thomas. The island quickly became a bustling hub for trade, with goods flowing in and out of the port. Plantations were also established, and the island thrived on the cultivation of sugarcane and cotton.

St. Thomas changed hands multiple times throughout its history, with power shifting between the Danish, British, Spanish, and even French forces. However, it was the Danish who held control for the longest period, until 1917 when the United States purchased the Virgin Islands, including St. Thomas, from Denmark.

The deep and sheltered natural harbor of Charlotte Amalie, the capital of St. Thomas, was soon recognized as an ideal location for a cruise port. In the late 20th century, the transformation of St. Thomas into a major cruise ship destination began.

For those seeking adventure, St. Thomas offers a wealth of activities, including snorkeling, diving, kayaking, and hiking. The island is also home to world-renowned beaches like Magens Bay, where visitors can relax on white sands and swim in crystal-clear waters.

The history and location of the St. Thomas Cruise Port make it a truly enchanting destination for cruise ship travelers. With its rich past and natural beauty, it is no wonder why St. Thomas continues to be a top choice for those seeking an unforgettable Caribbean experience.

A. Provide a brief overview of the history of St. Thomas

St. Thomas has a long and storied history that dates back centuries. Originally inhabited by the Ciboney and Arawak tribes, the island later became a trading hub for indigenous peoples of the Caribbean. In the late 1400s, Christopher Columbus arrived in the area during his famous exploration voyage, marking the beginning of European influence in the region.

During the 17th century, the Danish West India Company established a trading post on the island, leading to the establishment of the first European settlements. St. Thomas quickly became a prized possession for Denmark due to its strategic location and flourishing trade routes. Over time, the island’s economy grew and thrived, thanks to industries such as sugar cane production, tobacco farming, and the slave trade.

The 19th century brought significant changes to the island’s ownership. In 1801, Denmark ceded control of St. Thomas, along with St. John and St. Croix, to the British. However, just a few years later, in 1815, the Treaty of Kiel returned the islands to Danish rule. This period also witnessed the abolition of slavery in the Danish West Indies, a significant milestone in the island’s history.

The island’s natural beauty, friendly locals, and vibrant culture attracted visitors from all around the world. If you enjoy an easy day of visiting on your own, you can create your historic own “walking tour”, do some duty-free shopping, and stop in at a local bar or restaurant to soak in a bit of the St. Thomas island life.

3. Duty-free Shopping

St. Thomas is known for it’s duty free shopping deals, especially for gold jewelry and gemstones and quality tablecloths and linens. You’ll also find lots of items that make great souvenirs.

In Charlotte Amalie, you’ll find hundreds of brand name and local shops along Main Street and the cross streets. You’ll also find a local straw or flea market with some handmade jewelry, t-shirts and other souvenirs.

Downtown Charlotte Amalie National Heritage Sites

In the Historic district of Charlotte Amalie, there are several building and sights history buffs will enjoy.

4. Blackbeard’s Castle

Blackbeard’s Castle, a historic site, is named for the famous pirate Edward Thatch (they called him Blackbeard because of his… you guessed it – black beard. The castle is really a watchtower, which overlooks Charlotte Amalie and boasts breathtaking views.

5. Fort Christian

Built in the late 1600’s, Fort Christian is the oldest standing structure in St. Thomas. While this fort was built by King Christian V to protect Danish settlers on the island of St. Thomas, over time it’s been used as administrative offices, a church and even a prison. It is now a museum, housing artifacts

6. St. Thomas Synagogue

The St. Thomas Synagogue is full of history and a must see for those of all faiths. In the heart of Charlotte Amalie, you’ll find the synagogue located just two block up from Main Street.

Inside the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas, you’ll get a brief history of the synagogue, the Jewish history of the island, and the significance of it’s sand floor.

Although guided tours are available, this is an active synagogue and working congregation.

7. 99 Steps

Another tourist attraction located in Charlotte Amalie, closeby to the synagogue, is 99 Steps. Although 99 Steps is the most famous and most photographed, there are many of these “step” streets which cut through the hills in St. Thomas.

These step streets were originally built from ballast bricks of the tall ships coming from the Old World.

Funnily enough, there are actually 103 steps in this historic St. Thomas landmark.

Best Beaches in St. Thomas

St. Thomas’ white sand beaches are gorgeous and each one has a special character. Depending on what you enjoy most, you’ll likely have a preference.

8. Magens Bay Beach

Magen's Bay Beach view

Without a doubt, Magens Bay is the most famous as well as most popular beach in St. Thomas for cruise passengers. For many years, it was on several top ten lists of most beautiful beaches in the world.

Magens Bay Beach is a horseshoe shaped beach with pristine, crystal clear and calm waters. The colors of the blues and turquoise waters set against the lush mountains where it nestles, is picture perfect!

Magens Bay has good facilities. You can rent chairs and loungers, and there’s a nice beach bar and restaurant on site.

It does get crowded, but if you’d like to find a quieter spot to sit, head to either end of the beach and you’ll be fine.

9. Sapphire Beach

Sapphire Beach is known for it’s stunning sapphire blue waters of course! However, you’ll also get a beautiful view of the neighboring island of St. John.

10. Coki Beach

Coki beach is another popular beach for cruisers. It’s located on the Northern coast of the island and most enjoyed for it’s snorkeling and diving.

Coki Beach is a bit smaller than Magens Bay, but does also have facilities, and is very pretty.

Coral World Ocean Park is located here, so this can make a great full day to combine a beach and aquarium visit.

11. Lindquist Beach

The quietest of the beaches, Lindquist Beach is known to cruise passengers who prefer to avoid the crowds. Located on the Eastern side of the island, this secluded beach has shallow and calm waters and a breathtaking view of the island of St. John.

While it has basic facilities, such as washrooms and picnic benches, other amenities are limited. You’ll need to bring any food or drinks with you, if you decide to head to Lindquist Beach.

Neighboring Islands of St. Thomas

St. John Trunk Bay Beach

12. Trunk Bay, St. John

One of the excursions that comes most recommended, is a visit to the neighboring island of St. John. In contrast to bustling St. Thomas, St. John is a much less busy and not commercialized as most of the island is part of the US Virgin Islands National Park.

The most popular beach for cruisers and those who want to snorkel, is Trunk Bay. Perfect for families and kids, this beach has an underwater snorkeling trail that’s accessible from the beach and close to the shoreline.

The island of St John is accessible by ferry and you can go your own, or book an excursion with your cruise line. If you do take the ferry on your own, do make sure to pay close attention to the ferry schedule so that you get back to the cruise ship on time (and avoid being a pier runner/missing the ship )

13. Honeymoon Beach / Water Island

One of the quieter beaches you can enjoy is Honeymoon Beach on Water Island. It’s a small and simple beach, but the water is beautiful and clear. There’s a cute little hot dog and burger restaurant, where you can grab a bite to eat in paradise.

To get to Honeymoon Beach, you can either take a ferry to Water Island, or you can go with a cruise line excursion. During a past cruise we did a snorkeling excursion which included a stop at this beach, and we enjoyed it.

14. Skyride to Paradise Point

Just a few minutes walk from the Havensight cruise port, you’ll find the Sky Ride to Paradise Point. Head up 700 feet to the top of the mountain by tram and experience incredible views of St. Thomas and the harbor.

This has been a favorite shore excursion for many cruisers over the years for taking Instaworthy photos of the stunning harbor. Plus, there’s a gift shop, restaurant and bar where you may want to stop for a famous Bailey’s Bushwacker.

You can easily visit in about an hour or two, and still have time for an afternoon excursion if you like.

There’s also a pharmacy in the area, if you need some essentials or over the counter medications you may have forgotten to bring on your cruise .

17. Turtle Cove to Buck Island Snorkeling Excursion

If you’ve dreamed of swimming with turtles (me!), consider this St. Thomas snorkeling excursion. We actually booked this one in the past and enjoyed it.

I will say, we didn’t see as many turtles as we hoped, but we still had a great time and it was a cool experience.

18. Sunset Sail

If your cruise ship is docked until late at night, consider the ultimate romantic excursion, a sunset catamaran sail.

Cruise Tip: If you’re doing an evening activity, consider booking your shore excursion with the cruise line for peace of mind. The cruise ship won’t wait for you if you’re late and are not with a cruise line sponsored tour.

19. Coral World Ocean Park

Located at Coki Beach, the Coral World Ocean Park is one of St. Thomas’ most popular attractions for families. This aquarium offers many opportunities to interact and learn about a variety of marine life, including sea lions, dolphins, and sea turtles.

On St. Thomas you will find crystal clear waters, luscious greenery, incredible views, picturesque beaches, and colorful villages. The stunning little island located in the West Indies is truly a paradise.

When arriving in St. Thomas I was shocked at the beauty of the island. I was not expecting the mountains to contrast with the turquoise water or the views offered from all over the island.

St. Thomas is the most populated island in the US Virgin Islands and the most visited. Cruise ships dock here, and it is home to the largest airport out of the three main islands (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix). The capital of the US Virgin Islands, Charlotte Amalie, located in St. Thomas is exciting and bustling with people.

This guide to St. Thomas, USVI will go over everything you need to know to have the best trip ever!

What To Do In St. Thomas

1) head to the beach.

There are plenty of beaches to choose from in St. Thomas, all of which are beautiful! These are my favorite…

Magens Bay Beach

Located on the Atlantic side of the island, Magens Bay Beach is perfect for families due to the swimming conditions. The beach is in a protected bay with mountains on each side, making Magens Bay absolutely stunning.

Magens Bay Beach is the most popular beach on St. Thomas, so if you want to avoid the crowds, you must be careful when you plan to visit. If there are cruise ships docked, avoid Magens Bay and opt for another beach. I went to Magens Bay for an early evening swim and the beach was pretty much empty.

While touristy, Magens Bay is a must-visit on St. Thomas; plan a good time to go, and you will love it.

Brewers Bay Beach

Brewers Bay Beach was one of my favorite beaches in St. Thomas. Located on the Caribbean side of the island, It is a quieter option. Brewers Bay is unique because it is next to the airport, and you can see planes coming in while swimming.

Brewers Bay is a great option for families as it is enclosed, so the water is calm.

There is the occasional food truck, but don’t count on food and drinks at Brewers Bay.

Lindquist Beach

Lindquist is located on the eastern part of St. Thomas, on the Atlantic side. If you are staying in the Red Hook area, Lindquist is a great beach to visit. The water is warm and clear, and we saw sea turtles!

I noticed there wasn’t much shade, so bring a beach umbrella if possible.

There is a $7 fee to get into Lindquist, and the parking lot has plenty of spaces.

2) Explore Charlotte Amalie

Charlotte Amalie was founded in 1672 by the Danish and it is the capital of the US Virgin Islands. Charlotte Amalie is the best place to learn about the US Virgin Island’s past. I had an amazing time in this beautiful city.

Blackbeard’s Castle

Above the 99 Steps sits Blackbeard’s Castle, a Danish watch tower built in the 1600s. The Castle is open seasonally, so make sure you check the dates and times on the website . The views from Blackbeard’s Castle are stunning.

Fort Christian

Fort Christian was one of my favorite things to do in Charlotte Amalie. Built in the late 1600s and named after Danish King Christian V., it is an impressive building with a lot of history.

While at the Fort, you will have the chance to learn more about the history of the Virgin Islands and tour the dungeons, living quarters, chapel, and more.

Frederick Lutheran Church

Founded in 1666, Frederick Lutheran Church is the oldest church on St. Thomas and the oldest Lutheran church in the Americas. The Frederick Lutheran Church still holds services today and is an easy walk from Main Street. It is an easy stop while exploring Charlotte Amalie.

Take a Stroll Down Main Street

While Main Street isn’t the best for shopping, it is a picturesque street with colorful buildings and Danish architecture.

Most of the shops on Main Street are jewelry shops, as USVI has no sales tax. Unless you are looking for jewelry, you may get a bit bored. I loved visiting Main Street in the morning before the shops opened to admire the unique doors and colorful buildings.

Built in the 1800s by the Danes, the 99 steps were constructed with bricks brought from Denmark. They were built to make navigating the treacherous terrain in St. Thomas easier. Once you reach the top of the 99 Steps, you will be greeted with incredible views of Charlotte Amalie Harbor.

3) Go To The Lookouts

The US Virgin Islands are known for their views. The hilltops and dramatic coastline make for unforgettable sights. You will find that wherever you are on the island, you will most likely have a lovely view, but these St. Thomas lookouts are worth a visit.

Drake’s Seat

Drake’s Seat offers views of Magens Bay Beach and other islands on the Atlantic side of St. Thomas. It is not touristy, so you can take plenty of photos without being photographed by photo bombers.

Located on a busy road, you must be careful at Drake’s Seat and aware of your surroundings. Avoid the handrails and touching any wood on the platform; I cut my finger on a nail sticking out. You could just avoid the platform altogether; the view is better from the street.

Charlotte Amalie Lookout

The Charlotte Amalie Lookout is right next to Drake’s Seat. You can see Charlotte Amalie, the Charlotte Amalie Harbor, the Caribbean Sea, and nearby Islands from here.

Paradise Point

Paradise Point is the most touristy lookout as it is next to where the cruise ships dock, but with that said it is still worth a visit. You will take the Skyride up to the top of Paradise Point and be welcomed with incredible views, a restaurant, souvenir shops, and a bar.

The Skyride costs around $25 per person, but the view is amazing. Make sure to check the website  for the hours.

4) Take A Day Trip To St. John

St. John is known for its nature, as the Virgin Islands National Park covers 60% of the island. The quiet St. John is home to fantastic beaches, amazing snorkeling, and exciting hiking.

St. John is only a 20-minute ferry ride from Red Hook on the island’s eastern side and a 45-minute ferry ride from Charlotte Amalie. Both ferries dock at Cruz Bay in St. John.

Trunk Bay Beach

Trunk Bay was my favorite beach in the USVI. Known to be one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, It is a 0.3-mile beach that offers incredible snorkeling, turquoise water, and white sand.

You can find a grab-and-go cafe and a bar where you can order Pina Coladas, Banana Daiquiris, Bushwackers, and more. At Trunk Bay Beach, you can also access outdoor showers, a bathroom, and changing rooms.

The entrance fee at Trunk Bay is $7.

There is no shortage of hiking on St. John. Home to the USVI National Park, the island has 30 hiking trails.

If you don’t have a car and want a shorter hike I recommend the Lind Point Trail. The start of the trail is an easy walk from the ferry terminal at Cruz Bay and it’s only 2.3 miles. On the Lind Point Trail, you will stumble upon hidden beaches such as Salomons Bay Beach and Honeymoon Beach.

Where To Dine In St. Thomas

Breakfast & brunch in st. thomas.

  • Barefoot Buddha – Barefoot Buddha focuses on providing the community with healthy and delicious food. You can order lunch, breakfast, and coffee at Barefoot Buddha, I loved the Breakfast Burrito.

Dinner In St. Thomas

  • Blue Eleven – Blue Eleven serves modern Caribbean cuisine. At the high end, you will find some of the best food on the island. Blue Eleven only uses locally sourced ingredients and takes time in preparing each dish. If you are looking for a fine dining experience keep Blue Eleven in mind.
  • Oceana Restaurant & Bistro – Another lovely fine dining option on St. Thomas, Oceana Restaurant & Bistro serves delectable seafood in a relaxing environment. Make sure you try the crab cake!
  • Virgilio’s – Located right off Main Street you will find a popular Italian joint called Virgilio’s. While the food is delicious, what was unique about it was the artwork inside of the restaurant. I even recognized a painting by the Colombian artist, Fernando Botero.
  • The Easterly – Located in Red Hook, The Easterly is a high-end restaurant that serves seafood. The Easterly has a bohemian vibe and is known for its amazing and unique cocktails.

Bars In St. Thomas

  • XO Bistro – XO Bistro in St. Thomas is known for its fabulous cocktails and food. Perfect for a night out, XO Bistro is a stylish bar that will not disappoint.

Best Tours To Take In St. Thomas

Tours can be one of the most memorable things you do on a trip. The people you meet and the things you learn on a tour can make your vacation special. These are the best tours to take in St. Thomas.

  • Do a Snorkeling Tour  – The USVI is known for its amazing snorkeling and scuba diving. There is no better way to see all of the best reefs and spots than doing a guided snorkeling tour.

  • Charlotte Amalie Food Tour – One of my favorite things to do while travelling is food tours because of the people you meet and the local food you get to try. On this Charlotte Amalie Food Tour you will visit local joints and get to know fellow travellers doing it!

Getting To and Around St. Thomas

The Charlotte Amalie Airport is the biggest airport in the USVI, so unless you are visiting via a cruise you will most likely be flying right into St.Thomas. You can find flights from Spirit, Cape Air, Delta, American and United. There are direct flights from New York, Orlando, Newark, Baltimore, Atlanta, Miami, Philadelphia, Boston, Charlotte, Detroit, Chicago and Fort Lauderdale to St. Thomas.

The cheapest route to fly is from Miami, Orlando, or Fort Lauderdale to St.Thomas via Spirit.

The airport is conveniently located in Charlotte Amalie, and Main Street is only about 15 minutes away.

There is no Uber or Lyft in the USVI, so you will have to rent a car or take a taxi. Although taxis can sometimes be unreliable and overpriced, I found that they were easy to find and pretty inexpensive for the Caribbean, so don’t worry too much about transportation.

Best Time Of Year To Visit St. Thomas

The best time to visit St. Thomas is winter and spring (December – May). There will be sunshine and, of course, warm weather.

Avoid visiting St. Thomas in the summer and fall. These months can get hot, and it is hurricane season, so you will likely experience a bit of rain.

St Thomas Island USVI cruise port

Region Bahamas - Caribbean - Bermuda

Local Time 2024-06-09 00:48

Port St Thomas Island USVI cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from St Thomas Island USVI, Charlotte Amalie, US Virgin Islands. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Saint Thomas is one of the US Virgin Islands (USVI) in the Caribbean. Together with Saint John and Water Island, it forms a county and district of the USVI (unincorporated USA territory). St Thomas island's population is around 52,000, or about 49% of USVI's total.

On the island is Charlotte Amalie - the USVI's capital city and principal port (locode VISTT).

On September 20, 2023, USVI Port Authority's Board of Governors approved the CCRC/Capital Cost Recovery Charge of (US$5 per cruise passenger (implemented on January 1, 2024) to improve local port facilities. The fee is only for Royal Caribbean Group/RCG-owned ships from RCG's subsidiaries RCI-Royal Caribbean International , Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises . The CCRC is for all RCG passengers whose ships dock at USVI's main cruise ports - Charlotte Amalie (Austin Monsanto Marine Terminal) and Frederiksted/St Croix Island (at Ann E. Abramson Marine Terminal).

The USVI is the only place under USA jurisdiction where the road rule is to drive on the left. It was inherited from what was then-current Danish practice at the time of American acquisition in 1917. Because Saint Thomas is a United States territory, most cars are imported from the mainland USA and therefore the steering column is placed on the left side of the vehicles.

St Thomas has many regular taxis and open-air, covered trucks named "safaris" with bench seats which usually operate only between high-traffic points: cruise-ship terminals at Crown Bay and Havensight and downtown Charlotte Amalie. However, most cruise ships to St Thomas USVI dock at Port Charlotte Amalie.

All USVI beaches (including on St Thomas) are public and free of charge (no entry fees required). The most popular among tourists are Lindquist Beach and Emerald Beach.

St Thomas Island USVI cruise terminal

Cruise ships to Saint Thomas Island dock at Crown Bay's Austin Monsanto Marine Terminal in Charlotte Amalie - a port town on the southern coast.

All Inclusive St John Beach and Snorkelling (Royal Caribbean) is an optional shore excursion to Trunk Bay beach (white sand), featuring guided boat tour to Trunk Bay and a snorkel trail.

Sailing to Christmas and Honeymoon Coves (Royal Caribbean) is an optional sailing boat tour for snorkeling. The boat is first anchored offshore (at Christmas Cove), then Sails to Water Island (Honeymoon Beach) for swimming and sunbathing. Snorkeling is also available. The experience also includes freshly-made beach BBQ served on the boat.

5 Star Island Tour (Royal Caribbean) is an optional driving tour, which stops at St Peter Mountain's top (shopping), Magen's Bay Beach (2-hour stay for beach activities) and downtown Charlotte Amalie (2-hour stay for shopping).

Stunning mountain scenery, crystalline waters, and white-sand beaches with palms swaying in the breeze - the US Virgin Islands are truly a slice of paradise. The harbor is easily one of the Caribbean's most scenic. The United States purchased the Virgin Islands from Denmark for $25 million in gold. St. Thomas is a Caribbean paradise where white-sand beaches are gently lapped by azure waters and mountains are topped with verdant crowns of vegetation. Boasting a cosmopolitan flair, the island offers an abundance of duty-free shopping, top-notch eateries and cultural experiences. In the harbor city of Charlotte Amalie, find the famed 99 Steps, a scenic staircase constructed by the Danes in the 1700s that starts the journey to a 1679 castle. And there are widely popular bay-like beaches with amenities such as restaurants, rest rooms, chair rentals and complete water sports centers offering a variety of rental equipment .

Many couples are opting to save the money (not to mention the stress and hard work) of a big wedding at home by escaping to a Caribbean island for a combination wedding/honeymoon. Upon their return, they can share the event by showing the video and photographs at an informal reception. All the islands are beautiful and, on some, weddings have become a major promotional tool. So why should you choose St. Thomas above others?

Eastern Caribbean cruises sail year-round. They are more affordable during the summer months, but since hurricane season here runs from May through November, many cruisers choose sailings in the winter and spring.

The Eastern Caribbean -- encompassing islands like Puerto Rico, Turks & Caicos, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic -- is arguably the most common region offered by mainstream cruise lines. You'll have plenty of choices including Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival, Princess, Holland America, Disney, Celebrity and more.

What are some things to do in the Eastern Caribbean?

Lazy beach days, water sports and duty-free shopping (think St. Thomas) will always be Eastern Caribbean mainstays, but there are plenty of other options, as well. You can visit historic forts and ruins in St. Kitts, tour a rum distillery in San Juan, go fishing or sailing in Grand Turk or take a food tour on St. Croix.

Do you need a passport to take a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean?

If you're an American citizen and your cruise starts and ends in the same U.S. port, you do not need a passport. However, requirements can vary for ports on your cruise itinerary, so you should always check before you book your sailing.

What should I pack for a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean?

The Eastern Caribbean is hot and humid all year. Pack plenty of comfortable shorts, t-shirts and sundresses. Sandals, sunscreen and sunglasses are a must. Water shoes -- especially for the little ones -- can be helpful to have on hand.

tropical paradise shoreline with verdant green palm trees around it

The Largest U.S. Virgin Island Remains an Uncrowded Paradise

And it’s no big deal if you forget your american passport at home..

It’s a tale as old as time. A pristine, tropical paradise floods everyone’s FYPs and soon turns into an overcrowded tourist trap. The lesson here? To take the road less traveled, which means considering St. Croix .

One of the three  US Virgin Islands —which includes St. John and St. Thomas —St. Croix is often overlooked for its more tourist- and cruise-centric siblings. But it’s precisely this lack of overt commercialism that should appeal to first timers and repeat visitors alike. It also doesn’t hurt that the tropical island abuts a turquoise stretch of the Caribbean Sea , or that its 84 square miles offer a mixture of both metropolitan perks and rural retreats. With temperatures that rarely dip below 70 degrees Fahrenheit in any season, travelers can immerse themselves in idyllic warm weather pastimes like boat rides, snorkeling , food tours, nature conservation, small business shopping, walks along the beach, and much more.

Here’s everything you need to know to plan your next tropical getaway to St. Croix.

st croix

Best places for first timers to visit in St. Croix

Nicknamed "Twin City" for its two towns, St. Croix’s main action can be found in either Christiansted on the northern coast or Frederiksted on the southwestern side of the island. If it’s your first time here, either hub is an ideal base camp.

First and foremost, get out on that water and bask in the sun. The quickest boat ride on the island is that from Christiansted Harbor to Protestant Cay . After a two-minute ride, you'll be let out onto a four-acre island, which is home to a sand beach, small shop, beach bar, and hotel. For a low price, your party can rent lounge chairs, umbrellas, and towels before setting up shop along the shoreline.

Rum production on the island traces all the way back to 1760, so it only seems right to sip like the locals do by visiting the Cruzan Rum  distillery. Sign up for a 30-minute tour around the facilities followed by a sampling at the on-site tasting room.

After a few drams, take your explorations into town and open your wallet at a slew of handmade jewelry shops. St. Croix is renowned for jewelry created using pieces of fine china that have washed ashore. It's also famous for hook bracelets, which were invented at  Sonya’s Fine Island Jewelry . Top shops to frequent for necklaces, bracelets, and charms also include ib designs , Joyia , and Lady C Designs .

Where to eat and drink like a local in St. Croix

Crucian cuisine pulls culinary influences from Denmark, Africa, and across the Caribbean for a fascinating array of specialty dishes. Among the can’t-miss foods to try, locals recommend everything from the fried bread treat called Johnny cakes—specifically those made by the crowd-favorite La Reine Chicken Shack —to the pâté handhelds stuffed with beef, conch, or veggies—which reign supreme at the more than 30-year-old Rosa’s Booth .

Famous guests like President Joe Biden and Martha Stewart already know that  Savant  is the perfect place for an unforgettable night out. The family-owned restaurant is known for eclectic and locally influenced cuisine, as well as its gorgeous back patio. If a spot that comes with stunning waterfront views is up your alley, there’s Polly’s at the Pier and Off the Wall , though  AMA at Cane Bay  undoubtedly features the most breathtaking setup. If you're looking for something more plant-forward, locally run restaurants like Cafe Roots-N-Kulchah —the Ginger Sop Juice and Black Bean Burger are can’t-misses—and the Caribbean-influenced Ital in Paradise  might be up your alley.

Plus, a light dinner means you're primed for dancing at  Levels . The recently renovated nightclub is the place to go on Friday nights for shows by local singers and bands. For a more sit-and-sip experience, the Sion Farm Distillery tasting room serves tropical iterations of Mutiny Island Vodka, which is crafted using breadfruit.

Museums, art, and culture in St. Croix

The heartbeat of St. Croix is kept alive by a diverse population of local Crucians. Immerse yourself in the creative scene on the island via Art Thursdays . Held every third Thursday of the month between November and May from 10 am to 8 pm, local Christenstead galleries and stores join in a communal uplifting of local artisans by displaying handmade jewelry, paintings, photography, woodworking, and ceramics.

“Hamilton” fans and more history-inclined travelers may be interested to know that Alexander Hamilton actually spent almost a decade of his early life living in St. Croix. Embark on a self-guided tour of the most influential and significant places of Hamilton’s life by sightseeing at places like Fort Christiansvaern and St. John’s Anglican Church .

Meanwhile, if the high seas are calling, an exploration on the Roseway might just do the trick. Climb aboard the century-old, 137-foot schooner (which splits its time docked between Boston and St. Croix) for a tour or sunset cruise led by the World Ocean School . The interactive journeys include opportunities for passengers to help the crew hoist the massive sails and see St. Croix from a different perspective.

Nature and outdoor experiences in St. Croix

Charters from Caribbean Sea Adventures are sure to create core memories. And of the guided tours, private charters, sport fishing, and sunset sails offered by the company, the Buck Island Snorkeling Tour is a can’t-miss. During the half-day expedition: Sun bathe on the boat deck, stroll the postcard-worthy shores of Turtle Beach , and snorkel at Buck Island Reef National Monument . And if you’re looking to give back, help to conserve the beauty and wildlife of Buck Island by volunteering or donating to the National Park Service , which is behind a major effort to jumpstart healthy coral growth and reduce surrounding pollution.

For an extra-aesthetic cocktail hour, board a pink 1974 Boston Whaler for a cruise around St. Croix with Cabana Cruises . Featuring everything from a pastel-hued exterior, Bluetooth stereo, and phone charging stations, the boat tours range from early morning rides (made complete with mimosas) to longer adventures where picnic spreads are enjoyed on secluded beaches.

To further take advantage of the gorgeous temps, avail yourself of three golf courses primed for a quick nine or an all-day 36. Choose between The Buccaneer Golf Course , Carambola Golf Club , and The Reef Golf Course .

St. Croix hotels

Downtown Christiansted’s historic King Christian Hotel recently debuted its grand revival, which is definitely something to write home about. A mainstay of the Christiansted waterfront since 1743, the newly minted King Christian Hotel makes a strong case for an ideal home base with stylish interiors, spacious balconies, stunning coastal views, and knowledgeable staff. You also benefit from on-site cushy comforts like breathtaking ocean views while brunching at Caroline’s , caffeine boosts from Virgin Islands Coffee Roasters , and poolside bites plus happy hour cocktails courtesy of the Oaxacan-influenced restaurant El Leon .

For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, The Waves Cane Bay on the north shore of Cane Bay is home to the cliffside digs of your dreams. With just 11 rooms on property, your secluded getaway experience includes a stunning waterside restaurant (that comes with complimentary crashing waves and hanging fairy lights for a dreamy ambiance), idyllic golden hour cocktail bar, and on-site natural grotto. If you're looking into an extended remote-working experience, one of the Superior Rooms will level up your island time with a full kitchenette, WiFi, an Apple TV, and an expansive balcony space.

What to know before you go to St. Croix

Best times of the year to visit.

To successfully avoid peak tourism season—which falls between December and March—you'll want to visit St. Croix from April to June. Earlier in the year will result in cooler weather, while the closer to summer you get, the more balmy your vacation will be.

St. Croix time zone

Upon landing at the island’s quaint Henry E. Rohlsen Airport, you’ll also notice your phone automatically has shifted to Atlantic Standard Time (AST). That's one hour ahead from Eastern Standard Time, two hours ahead on Central Time, and three hours ahead on Pacific Standard Time.

The weather and climate

The US Virgin Islands are classified as having a tropical climate. With easterly trade winds and mostly low humidity, temperatures on average in St. Croix usually rest between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures are cooler from winter to spring, with average highs around 84 degrees Fahrenheit and lows around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. From summer to fall, temperatures can spike to 90 degrees Fahrenheit with lows of 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Rainy seasons run from May to December, as well as September to November.

The official language of St. Croix is currently English. The local dialect, spoken by the island’s native community, is Crucian. Less common languages spoken around the island include French, Spanish, and Arabic.

How to get around

High on the priority list for most travelers to St. Croix should be a car rental. On-island escapades can be hard to navigate if you’re relying on calling a taxi, and ride-shares are not readily available. For those who are ready to take the adventure into their own hands, there are several car rental agencies like Centerline Car Rentals , which has a convenient outpost at the STX Airport, and John Hope Automotive for luxury wheels. Just keep in mind, things move a little differently here: All motorists in St. Croix drive on the left side of the road!

The currency

Yet another plus for American travelers is that since St. Croix is a US territory, the currency here is the US dollar.

International adapters you’ll need

St. Croix uses power outlets type A and B (the same as the US).
