YouTube A Pakled from "Star Trek: The Next Generation"

The Pakleds are one of “ Star Trek’s ” lesser-known alien species . The humanoid species was first introduced in the “ Star Trek: The Next Generation ” episode, “ Samaritan Snare .” They are native to either the Alpha Quadrant or the Beta Quadrant, and they frequently conducted business on Deep Space Nine .

Though the Pakleds regularly conducted business in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants and even controlled some sectors, their contact with the Federation was relatively limited in the 2360s and 2370s. In the early 2380s, however, the Pakleds made a power move against the Federation. Starfleet ships including the Cerritos and the Titan engaged the Pakleds, who presented much more of a challenge than expected.

“ Star Trek: Lower Decks ” is giving the Pakleds a much bigger role in the “Star Trek” canon than they’ve had in the past.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Pakleds Aren’t What They Seem

The Pakleds were developed by “ The Next Generation ” writer Robert McCullough. In an interview with “Starlog Magazine” shortly after “Samaritan Snare” aired, McCullough revealed all the secrets of the Pakleds.

He said that he wanted to come up with something completely different than the other species the crew of the Enterprise had encountered. It dawned on him that all of the species the crew met were highly intelligent and technologically advanced.

“I wanted to do something fun. In all these space shows the aliens are so d**n smart and sophisticated. I thought, ‘How about having them come across like dummies?’ As all the aliens were malevolent and inuitive like Q, I felt it would be find some aliens left out of the loop of development. Third world aliens! They appear to be stupid, but they’re not; they’re just needy. They’re so needy they become desperate.

McCullough also divulged that the name Pakled had a significance that was easy to miss, but so obvious once pointed out. Pakled breaks down to “pack-led,” meaning that the species are simple sheep, looking for another species to lead them.

The concept for the Pakleds was wonderfully executed in “Samaritan Snare.” When the Pakleds first encountered the Enterprise, they appeared to be too dumb to fix their own ship. In reality, their apparent lack of intelligence was a ruse they employed so they could kidnap an engineer to do their work for them.

As McCullough stated, the Pakleds aren’t really a completely unintelligent species. They have the smarts to concoct elaborate schemes, conduct trade, and even run sectors. However, they lean into the perception that they’re unintelligent in order to take advantage of other species they encounter.

2. Pakleds Are Scavengers, Not Innovators

“Samaritan Snare” established two major things about the Pakleds’ ships and technology. First, their native ships and technologies are comparatively primitive. Second, they don’t advance their own ships and technologies through innovation; they scavenge and steal from other species.

When the Enterprise encountered the Pakleds in the 2360s, they hadn’t managed to incorporate many modern or advanced technologies into their ships. However, during their interaction with the Enterprise, the Pakleds managed to convince Chief Engineer Geordi LaForge to install Federation technologies on their ship. This was a massive upgrade to their systems that they never would have come up with on their own or had access to unless they tricked the Enterprise crew.

The season one finale of “Lower Decks,” “ No Small Parts ,” established that the Pakleds became experts at stealing or scavenging advanced technologies. “ Kayshon, His Eyes Open ,” the second episode of “Lower Decks'” second season, revealed that the Pakleds continued to add technologies to their ships on a regular basis.

Pakled ships were so powerful by the early 2380s that they presented a legitimate challenge for Starfleet vessels, even battlecruisers like the Titan.

3. The Pakleds Want to Be Self-Sufficient, But They’re Too Lazy

Another defining characteristic of the Pakleds is their lack of motivation and work ethic, except when it comes to creating a cunning plan for the purposes of thievery. Pakleds want to be a major force in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, but they don’t want to work to become that force.

So, they steal what they need, including manpower. In “Samaritan Snare,” the Pakelds correctly identified that Geordi would be a major asset. Since they didn’t want to take the time to thoroughly understand the technologies they were stealing, they decided that stealing a person to do all that work for them was a great idea. Of course, the plan failed when the Enterprise outwitted them.

In “Kayshon, His Eyes Open,” Captain William Riker revealed that the Pakleds wanted Varuvian ore because it could be weaponized. One of his bridge officers pointed out that “weaponizing Varuvian ore [was] a bit above the Pakleds’ grade level.”

Riker responded that Starfleet suspected the Pakleds were working with another species to take over Varuvian ore mining operations and weaponize the ore. Teaming up with another species to obtain what they can’t or are too lazy to obtain themselves is exactly the Pakleds’ modus operandi.

4. The Pakleds are Major Players in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants

“ Lower Decks ” is revealing that counter to everyone’s expectations, the Pakleds gained significant power in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. For decades, the Federation and Starfleet didn’t pay much attention to the Pakleds because they didn’t consider them a threat. Though the Pakleds occasionally pulled off clever and inconvenient schemes, their efforts to advance their society and become a power player were relatively inconsequential.

That all changed in 2380. In “No Small Parts,” the Cerritos received a distress call from the Solvang. When the crew warped to the ship’s last known coordinates, they discovered that the Solvang had been completely destroyed by an unknown enemy. The bridge crew had no idea what species could have carried out such complete destruction of a Starfleet vessel. They were even more baffled when they discovered that their adversaries were Pakleds.

Scans of the Pakled ship revealed that it contained parts and technologies from more than 30 different alien species. The crew concluded that the Pakleds had become powerful enough to change their tactics. In the decades since Starfleet had encountered the species, they’d shifted from luring in ships to steal their technologies to taking the technologies they wanted by force.

5. The Pakleds Might be Part of Something Big

So far, the Pakleds have been a substantial presence in “Lower Decks” season two . This season, the Titan is currently on a mission to expose the Pakleds’ plot to weaponize Varuvian ore and identify their partners. If the second season continues to follow the crew of the Titan as well as the crew of the Cerritos, then fans will likely see a lot more of the Pakleds this season.

However, the IMDB pages for episodes three , four , and five don’t include any of the actors who voice the Titan crew members in the cast list. This could mean that fans have seen the last of the Titan for a while. Or it could mean that the pages haven’t been completely updated to prevent spoilers. The IMDB pages for episodes six and beyond only include the main voice actors in the cast list. So, it’s very possible that the crew of the Titan will be back later in season two.

As it stands after episode two, the Pakleds have foiled Starfleet yet again. The attempt to infiltrate the Pakled mining operation and plant a tracking device on their ship went awry when Riker’s overzealous bridge crew decided to rush in rather than assess the situation. Though the entire crew, plus an extra clone of Boimler, managed to escape, Starfleet is no closer to understanding what the Pakleds are plotting.

Hopefully, fans will get more info later in the season.

Star Trek: Who Are The Pakled?

Delve deep into the mysteries surrounding the Pakled, uncovering their origins, traits, and the vital role they have played in the Star Trek story.

  • The Pakled, a seemingly unintelligent species in the Star Trek universe, are actually a complex and misunderstood civilization.
  • They value physical strength and fighting ability, but also have strong relationships based on mutual interests and resources.
  • Despite their low intellectual capabilities and simplistic society, the Pakled have made a lasting impact in the Star Trek franchise through their memorable appearances and cameo roles.

In the vast reaches of the cosmos, Star Trek sees science meets diplomacy and conflict. Countless species and civilizations with unique personalities and cultures have been portrayed throughout the shows and movies. The Pakled, who play a significant role in the franchise, have been a fan favorite in this galaxy of interstellar diversity. "Samaritan Snare," an episode of the second season of Star Trek : The Next Generation , introduces the Pakled, who appear to be a mysterious and unintelligent species. However, they represent a profound understanding of the complex interactions in the galaxy.

Known for their emphasis on physical strength and limited intellectual capabilities, The Pakled have a unique and somewhat chaotic system of government. Despite their perceived simplicity, the Pakled have left a lasting mark on the Star Trek universe, as shown by their memorable appearance in "Samaritan Snare" and subsequent cameo appearances in the franchise.

Star Trek: Patrick Stewart Has The Perfect Director In Mind To Bring Back Picard

The enigmatic origins of the pakled.

The Pakled people hail from the Pakled planet in the Alpha Quadrant of the galaxy . Their culture values physical strength and fighting ability. As such, those who were skilled in hand-to-hand combat or the use of weapons are respected and appreciated in Pakled society. This emphasis on strength and fighting ability results from the harsh conditions in which they lived, which meant that they were constantly struggling to survive.

Despite their tendency towards aggression, the Pakled are not lacking in compassion. They are known for having strong relationships with those they consider allies or friends. However, these relationships are often based on mutual interests, with each party benefiting from the skills or resources of the other. The Pakled are a very isolated people, with little interaction with others. Neighboring civilizations consider them a nuisance, thanks to their aggressive tactics and their proclivity for stealing technology.

The Pakled have an unusual government system, which confuses and frustrates diplomats. They were once ruled by an emperor, followed by a subordinate king, then a queen. The Pakled has a class system in which an individual's helmet size indicated their status. In 2381, the ruling elite was overthrown in a brief "revolt" and replaced by rebels, with the emperor's assassin declaring himself the new leader.

The Pakled are known to have low intellectual capabilities, and are not as tech-savvy as the Federation and their allies. A striking simplicity characterizes their society and technological prowess. Other prominent civilizations, such as the United Federation of Planets or the formidable Klingon Empire, often overshadow this species.

Distinctive Characteristics

The most distinctive characteristic of the Pakled is their reputation for being less intellectually adept than the average species in the Star Trek universe. They are often depicted as individuals of slower wit, lacking the proficiency for technological innovation and intricate problem-solving.

Regarding their physical appearance, the Pakled possess a straightforward humanoid form . They have a round, mostly bald head with prominent brows covering most of their sloping forehead, and eyes slanted downwards. Their skin is a pale grayish-white, and their bodies are thick and muscular. Their attire is practical, and their mode of communication is notable for its simplicity and directness. The Pakleds do not engage in elaborate diplomatic discourse or ponderous philosophical discussions.

Pakled in Star Trek: Their Impact and Relevance

Despite their perceived simplicity and apparent lack of sophistication, the Pakleds have played a significant role in the Star Trek narrative. The species is best remembered for their involvement in the episode "Samaritan Snare" in The Next Generation . In this episode, the USS Enterprise-D responded to the Pakled’s distress call, at which time the Pakled realized that the starship was technologically superior. Seeing this as an opportunity, they captured Captain Jean-Luc Picard, intending to exchange him for valuable technology or knowledge. However, the Enterprise-D crew outsmarted them, rescuing their captain. By the end of the episode, the relationship between Pakleds and the crew was still strained thanks to the Pakleds' aggressive actions.

The Pakled's appearances within the Star Trek franchise are not limited to this single episode, as they have made cameo appearances in subsequent Star Trek series. The Pakled were also mentioned in the TNG season 4 episode "Brothers" in which they rescued Data's brother Lore. They were also present in Deep Space Nine from the second to the fifth season as background characters. DS9 director David Livingston asked them to be back because of their funny appearance.

The Pakled are unique and stand out in the vast world of Star Trek . As ‘Trekkies’ continue to explore the universe alongside the United Federation of Planets and the species they meet along the way, their presence is a reminder of the complexity and variety of life among the stars.

Society and culture [ ]

Pakleds were noted for their apparently underdeveloped verbal communication skills. However, they used this, as well as their simple-looking appearance, to deceive other races. They controlled an area of space that included the Kalla system . However, they appeared to be a largely nomadic culture, traveling between worlds in search of supplies and materials needed for their continued survival. ( TNG episode : " Firstborn ")

Pakled merchants are known to live in untidy and unclean conditions. ( DS9 episode : " Prophet Motive ")

Biology [ ]

Pakleds tend to be rather heavy-set. They have purplish blood . ( TNG episode : " Samaritan Snare ", DS9 episodes : " The Collaborator ", " Bar Association ", ST - A Time to... novel : A Time to Die )

History [ ]

First contact between the Federation and Pakleds took place in the year 2365 , when the USS Enterprise -D answered a distress signal from a Pakled transport , the Mondor . After effecting repairs to their ship, the Pakleds attempted to hold Enterprise chief engineer Geordi La Forge captive, but eventually released him after witnessing a demonstration by the Enterprise . ( TNG episode : " Samaritan Snare ")

In 2366 , a Pakled trade ship rescued the android Lore , who had been drifting free in space for nearly two years following his attempted betrayal of the Enterprise crew. ( TNG episode : " Brothers ")

In late 2370 , Pakleds shipped retro-viral vaccines across the Demilitarized Zone to the Cardassians . ( TNG episode : " Preemptive Strike ")

In late 2373 , a Borg cube on a direct course for Sector 001 encountered the Mondor en route. The Borg Collective deemed the Pakleds unintelligent and considered it an inefficient use of resources to assimilate the freighter . However, they were later assimilated when the Borg needed extra reinforcements in their battle with Starfleet forces in Earth orbit . ( TNG - Strange New Worlds 10 short story : " A Dish Served Cold ")

There was a strong Pakled presence on Deep Space 9 in the 2370s decade . They would often frequent Quark's , the Klingon restaurant , and other establishments on the Promenade . ( DS9 episodes : " The Collaborator ", " Bar Association ")

During 2378 , the Pakleds were one of several races to attempt to scavenge the Rashanar Battle Site . One of their ships was warned to back off by the USS Enterprise -E . ( ST - A Time to... novel : A Time to Be Born )

By 2380 , the Pakleds, constantly underestimated by the galaxy, had salvaged technology from over thirty different species, including the Dominion and the Borg , to the point that Mondor -class vessels could readily overpower a California -class ship. ( LD episode : " No Small Parts ")

The Klingon extremist Dorg subsequently took advantage of the Pakleds' new power, hoping to use them to weaken the Federation and leave them vulnerable to Klingon conquest. ( LD episode : " wej Duj ")

Hiding in the Kalla system , a Pakled ship destroyed the USS Solvang with the USS Cerritos nearly being destroyed by other Pakled crafts before they were saved by the USS Titan . Reflecting on these events, Captain Carol Freeman and Ensign Beckett Mariner believed that the Pakleds had been allowed to advance so much due to Starfleet's failure to keep a constant watch on potentially dangerous species. ( LD episode : " No Small Parts ")

Believing that the Pakleds were being backed by an unknown power, Starfleet Command assigned the Titan to monitor and frustrate the Pakleds' activities. ( LD episode : " Kayshon, His Eyes Open ")

The Cerritos was eventually sent to Pakled to negotiate a ceasefire. While there, Captain Freeman learnt of the Pakled plan to detonate a varuvian bomb on Earth . ( LD episode : " The Spy Humongous ")

When the promised bomb was delivered to the Clumpship Pakled , the crew tested the weapon, forcing them to call the Klingons for a new one. The radiation given off by the bomb was detected by the Cerritos and the Vulcan ship Sh'vhal who discovered Dorg's schemes. After Dorg was overthrown by Ma'ah , the new captain ordered the Klingons to retreat, the Pakleds following suit once both the Federation and Vlucan ships opened fire on them. ( LD episode : " wej Duj ")

A short time later, after first contact with the Lapeerians , Pakled Planet was destroyed by a varuvian bomb planted by the Klingon extremists. An investigation by Starfleet Command led them to believe that Captain Freeman was in league with the Klingons and she was promptly arrested. ( LD episode : " First First Contact ")

While the trial was going on, Starfleet carried out a secret investigation into the bombing led by Captain Morgan Bateson. Finding a data Fabricator who altered footage to incriminate Captain Freeman, They pursued and captured the fabricator in the Romulan Neutral Zone and he was interrogated by Commander Tuvok and revealing the true identity of the bomber, the Pakleds themselves, who were hoping to frame Freeman for the attack and force the Federation to help them relocate to a new planet richer in resources. ( LD episode : " Grounded ")

By 2409 , numerous Pakleds were serving in Starfleet . ( ST video game : Star Trek Online )

Mike McMahan On The Inspiration To Use The Pakleds For Star Trek: Lower Decks - Exclusive

Mike McMahan smiling

The great thing about a comedy like "Star Trek: Lower Decks" is that there's already an entire galaxy out there of alien races and references to draw upon. Much of the humor from the animated series draws upon "Star Trek" lore. Subject matter and species audiences have seen previously are put into an entirely different context. Aliens who were once feared are now a laughing stock. As long as it doesn't break the canon of what's come before, anything can be on the table.

That's the lowdown of what the show's creator, Mike McMahan, said during his exclusive interview with Looper . When asked about ensuring continuity between "Star Trek" properties, he said it was all a matter of keeping the lines of communication open and making sure they weren't stepping on any other show's toes.

One alien race the show managed to go to town on was the Pakleds. Prior to "Lower Decks," the Pakleds were featured prominently on "Deep Space Nine" throughout Seasons 2 through 5. It makes one wonder why the creative forces behind the scenes chose a relatively obscure alien race to make such a prominent feature of "Lower Decks" Season 2 . McMahan shed a light on why the Pakleds were the perfect stand-in for the story he wanted to tell.

McMahan wanted the Pakleds to stand in for the rise of fascism in the real world

"Lower Decks" takes "Star Trek" into humorous territory, but at its core, the franchise has always served as a reflection of modern-day issues. The series may always be set hundreds of years into the future, but it has the characters deal with political or thematic issues people at home deal with today. There's no reason for "Lower Decks" to be any different, and as Mike McMahan told Looper, he wanted to use the Pakleds to shine a light on a prominent issue the world currently faces.

"It was back when there was a lot of news about fascism and strong men rising around the world," McMahan explained. "Obviously, that's a huge problem. At the time, we had done so many episodes of 'Lower Decks' [that] had been inspired by previous 'Star Treks,' like a trial episode or a big ship action episode and what have you. But what we hadn't done yet is an episode that was directly tied to something that meant something. And 'Star Trek' has to mean something for it to be 'Star Trek,' right? Otherwise, it's just people hanging out on a Starship."

He went on to discuss how the Pakleds could directly tie into fascism because no one ever really takes them seriously. They're seen as this goofy presence, so as they start accumulating power, no one pays them any mind. Therefore, McMahan wanted to bring awareness to an ever-increasing problem: "It's almost like the sinister way it comes back is by not shining a light on it or making a joke about it. You don't have to be smart or capable to be fascist." As the political realm becomes more stratified, it's all the more important to know what's going on around us — and it's great to have comedies like "Lower Decks" remind us of the dangers lurking in our political systems.

"Star Trek: Lower Decks" arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on July 12 with over an hour of bonus features, including exclusive featurettes, animatics, and Easter eggs.

Way back in the second episode of the season, Captain Riker mentioned that Starfleet Intelligence believed the Pakleds were receiving help from an outside source, and in “ wej Duj ” we learn that rogue Klingon captain Dorg (Colton Dunn) is that source — supplying the dimwitted aliens with not just information and weaponry, but the deadly Veruvian explosives they’re using to target Earth.

(Knowing the Klingon influence behind the Pakled’s actions explains why the Titan away team saw them using Klingon disruptors, too!)

The Boimler and Mariner alien equivalents — Ma’ah (John Curry) of the Klingon Defense Force and T’Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz) of the Vulcan High Command — are both very interesting, and I hope that we see more of them in the future. While Ma’ah seems to have earned his way to the Che’ta captain’s chair, we may very well see T’Lyn again after her “hot-headed” outbursts got her booted to Starfleet service.

Life aboard both the Klingon and Vulcan ships are rendered really well, with all the cultural peculiarities that we’ve come to expect from both races — from the harsh Klingon promotional tactic of killing a senior officer to move up in rank, and “punitive spiritualism” after one of T’Lyn’s emotional outbursts.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds may be getting buzz about “returning to episodic Star Trek,” but Lower Decks has been serving up stories for almost two seasons now, while deftly including a low-focus, season-long arc along the way!

The final act’s exciting space battle is thrilling — whether you’ve seen the rest of the season’s episodes or not — because you’re interested in the lower deckers on the Che’ta and Sh’Vahl, but also because the episode also significantly moves forward a key storyline from the season.

It’s also great fun to see the Cerritos crew explore their off-duty time, leading to the hilarious image of the ship’s officers sprinting through the corridors of the ship in their leisure wear in the episode’s climax. I’m finding it difficult to come up with new ways of writing “this is great,” every week, but Lower Decks is genuinely a delight.

TREK TROPE TRIBUTES

  • Many of the Cerritos crew have Next Generation -style hobbies — whether it’s art, classical music, or relaxing in one of many holodeck adventures. Many fanciful outfits can be seen on the off-duty crew, like Napoleon and Peter Pan costumes, smoking jackets, ice-skating attire, or anbo-jyutsu suits.
  • Boimler enters not one, but two in-progress holodeck sessions without asking, or needing permission. Apparently Starfleet hasn’t fixed that yet!
  • Dorg joins the great pantheon of Klingon officers who take decide to take the fate of the Klingon Empire into their own hands, a tradition dating back to Captain Kruge in  Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

CANON CONNECTIONS

  • Boimler proposes a Stratagema tournament to pass the time during the Cerritos crew’s day off, the first time that goofy holographic game has been referenced since “Peak Performance.”
  • There’s a lot of Klingon culture on display in this episode, including teeth sharpening , murdering a senior officer to move up in rank, eating dinner at a communal table, and the captain keeping a pet targ on board.
  • Veruvian bomb detonations release metreon particles, a common Star Trek science element that has been referenced in multiple episodes.
  • The design of the Klingon bridge matches the set seen in early Next Generation episodes like “A Matter of Honor,” the mess hall is designed like the set seen multiple times in  Deep Space Nine , and the transporter room is based upon the set used in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

  • Ma’ah references the famous Battle of Klach D’kel Brakt — Kor fought in a simulation of this battle in one of Quark’s holosuites in the opening moments of “Blood Oath.”
  • The Sh’Vhal’s captain’s office includes a Vulcan meditation lamp of the same design owned by Tuvok, as well as a replica of Surak’s pyramid-shaped kir’shara .
  • Dr. T’Ana’s rock-climbing sequence replicates Captain Kirk’s ascent up El Capitan in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier — though she and Tendi smartly wear safety gear in their holographic climb. Boimler represents both Kirk and Spock when visiting the holodeck, wearing Kirk’s “Go climb a rock.” shirt and Spock’s rocket boots.
  • Freeman and Mariner work out their grievances while playing a game of Velocity in the holodeck, a target-practice game first seen played by Captain Janeway and Seven of Nine in “Hope and Fear.”

star trek pakled

  • Freeman wears a T-shirt reading RITOS while off duty, a cheeky play on the DISCO shirts worn by the USS Discovery crew while exercising.
  • Two off-duty  Cerritos officers are wearing the same leotards Crusher and Troi wore in “The Price.”
  • An officer in the  Cerritos bar is seen playing the Ktarian game.
  • T’Lyn’s Vulcan padd design matches the one seen in the Enterprise episode “Stigma,” itself a repaint of the Bajoran padd originally built for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
  • “Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end,” says T’Lyn, quoting one of Spock’s lines to Valeris in Star Trek VI.
  • While the 22nd century Vulcan High Command was dissolved after the events of “United” in 2154, it was back in business by 2257 (“Brother”) and continues to operate into the 2380s. Though separate from Starfleet, officers in the Vulcan service can apparently be transferred to Starfleet vessels without issue.

  • Klingons and Shakespeare, two great flavors: Dorg echoes General Chang by quoting “Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of war!” from Julius Caesar .
  • Like Beverly Crusher and cadet Dorian Collins , Jack Ransom is a “lunar schooner” — a human born on Earth’s moon. Ransom is from Tycho City , like Dorian Collins; the domed town was originally mentioned in Star Trek: First Contact .
  • The  Cerritos crew compliment includes at least four acting ensigns, all who seem to be wearing California -class versions of the grey provisional officer uniform Wesley Crusher donned in early seasons of  Star Trek: The Next Generation.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS

  • Not counting episodes named after individuals (“Darmok,” “Su’Kal,” etc.), “ wej Duj ” is the fifth episode title to contain only alien words, after “Elogium,” “Empok Nor,” “Tsunkatse,” and “Kir’Shara.” It is the first episode to have an on-screen title rendered in non-human text.
  • “ wej Duj ” is the second Season 2 episode which opens without a teaser.
  • The Klingon Bird of Prey’s name,  Che’Ta , translates to “battle.”
  • Billups has a new soup recipe he wants Rutherford to try, referencing back to the time he called a soup-eating Billups “a stone-cold badass” last season.
  • Interestingly, the holodeck where Mariner and Freeman play Velocity appears to be designed after the Voyager-style set, even though the Cerritos ‘ holodecks have  matched the Enterprise -D yellow-grid design in all previous appearances.

  • The Sh’Vahl is a 24th century update to the Vulcan “ring-ship” starships seen in  Star Trek: Enterprise , dwarfing the  Cerritos ; the larger ship comes to the rescue in a moment mimicking the Enterprise- E’s rescue of the  USS Defiant in  Star Trek: First Contact.
  • The captain of the Sh’Vhal is one of the few Vulcans with facial hair we’ve seen in the prime Star Trek universe.
  • Whenever the episode returned to scenes aboard the Che’ta , the Christ Westlake’s score was quite reminiscent of Jerry Goldsmith’s famous Klingon theme from Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
  • The Tamarian language is taught at Starfleet Academy; “Carno in the forest, with Mithra” is a Tamarian phrase implying weight gain.

  • While relaxing in his bunk, Rutherford is holding a completed Deep Space 9 model, which was a gift from Tendi at the end of “An Embarrassment of Dooplers.”
  • Mariner and Freeman are playing the Starfleet version of the board game Clue , where the map resembles a Galaxy -class starship; Mariner’s guess at the murder weapon is the TR-116 teleportation rifle from “Field of Fire,” which she calls “the sniper rifle that can shoot through walls.”
  • The Pakled “clumpship” is called  Pakled , and their Red Alert status is simply a repeated call: “Red alarm!”

“ wej Duj ” is another highly creative and hilarious episode of Lower Decks , one which hopefully sets us up for a big season finale next week. This season has been a true delight so far, with only one or two “just okay” episodes along the the way, which is a pretty good track record for a series still in its early days.

I am going to be sad next week when this show is done for the year!

Pakleds are a humanoid species native to the Alpha Quadrant, but do not generally align themselves with any political faction. In the 2380s Pakleds fought against Starfleet ships with the aid of Klingon weapons. By 2409 some Pakleds have joined the United Federation of Planets , although the species as a whole remains unaligned. Pakleds are a playable race in Star Trek Online for the Federation faction. Starting with Season 5, they are unlocked for all players.

Physical features [ | ]

Pakleds are typically heavy-set humanoids that feature sunken eyes with bushy, upward-pointing eyebrows, a series of folds beneath their eyes and a drooping lower lip. Males of the species tend to have receding hairlines.

Other information [ | ]

The Pakleds are a largely nomadic species that often trade, scavenge or steal from other species for their technology. Pakleds have underdeveloped verbal communication skills. Due to this, many people underestimate them, thinking that they are too intellectually challenged to be devious, which they use to their advantage.

While most Pakleds are politically unaligned, a few have chosen to join Starfleet, where they have demonstrated that they can become more than simple nomads or traders.

Pakleds ( Borg designation: Species 95012 ) were a (theoretically) proto humanoid spacefaring race native to the mountainous Alpha Quadrant homeworld literally termed by themselves as Pakled Planet .

Originally since the late 23rd century Pakleds were a small short range space faring species that only were ship component scavengers gradually accelerating and upgrading their small freighter fleet.

However by the late 24th century grew into a burgeoning warrior culture based empire through Klingon technical interference giving them major military and ship advancements such as Infinity modulator weapons and ship propulsion, and ship components from over 30 species.

History [ ]

As stated above Federation researchers have theorized that Pakleds were and are still in a proto hominid state, similar to that of Neanderthals as due to the fact that Pakleds have not only a limited vocabulary and understanding of basic language but basic logic skills as well.

Presumably before interaction with any space-faring species, Pakleds lived in a standard hunter/gatherer primitive society. However possibly sometime in the mid to late 23rd century due to the fact that Pakled space neighbors systems and territories such as the Romulan Star Empire and Gorn space.

Most likely a more basic space freighter or exploratory vessel crash-landed on Pakled planet and discovered by a random tribe or group.

Pakled Monarchy [ ]

However, while not the most mentally developed species, the Pakleds were quickly developing in contextual comprehension and managed to create a few freighter-type ships that were able to search for other similar ship components to build more similar vehicles.

This basic step into interstellar travel and scavenging would be led to the development of the Mondor class a fair long-range sub-light speed freighter that would be invaluable in the collection and development of future ship sub-classes.

This would lead to the Pakleds small but aggressive fleet to occupy systems such as the Kalla system and a tiny few neighboring systems, this led Pakled society to evolve from a small collection of tribes into a small fiefdom of city-states ruled by a central monarchy with the head simply named Pakled King.

However, for decades Pakled society still revolved around a similar gatherer society, traveling from abandoned ship to wrecked hull along the edges of their territory only making small upgrades to their ships, virtually stagnating themselves.

Only through small contacts with neighboring species (including the Federation) led to small but necessary advances by using their appearance of being primitive and therefore helpless to trick other species into advancing and repairing moderately disabled ships

Dominion War [ ]

By the late 2370s an opportunity for the stagnant fiefdom as military tensions were building along the Beta and Gamma Quadrants . The Dominion War had pulled in allied non-combatant services for both sides concerning the delay of essential supplies. By this time the Klingon Empire , Cardassian Union and Dominion itself had hired Ferengi and the merchants guild of the Pakled Union to act as emergency non-combat medical and essential services delivery carriers.

Pakled merchant ships were given basic Warp 5.5 capable upgrades greatly expanding their range and cargo capacity.

As the conflict was headed to an end the Klingons began to see the cunning, ambition, and willingness to be a greater faction in the Alpha quadrant.

Pakled Empire [ ]

Klingon nobles wanting to seek victory within their somewhat vulnerable neighbors without Starfleet interference began to give the now allied Pakled fleet whole confiscated ships and technical components to enhance their fleet. The main purpose was to create the updated fleet as a military distraction for the Federation while they reannex and recollect debts from outside systems.

As well they were given free rein of war-based ship graveyards to take what they will to what they believe would advance their technical knowledge. This included the adaptation of Infinity modulator energy distribution. This allowed the creation of a revolutionary propulsion system that by the standards of Pakled engineers wouldn't "cheat" traveling at warp velocity with the need for subspace distortion. And instead would basically force the ship forward with a tremendous amount of modulated emitted "plasma" at speeds faster than the speed of light.

By the end, the entirety of Mondor ships were massively upgraded to dreadnought vessels consisting of several dozen ship sections from over 30 species.

Now with the power of dreadnought warships the Pakled monarchy basing itself after the warrior culture of Klingon society now renamed its government as the Pakled Empire.

Although in fairness it technically wasn't an actual empire. The empire still consisted of the same amount of territory but patrolled and raided smaller ships and territories similar to the Klingon Empire in its early era...

Pakleds also began to adopt Klingon styles of military dress and hierarchy. With armored uniforms and helmets that resembled Klingon outfits of the Kelvin timeline , however, these outfits may have been military surplus from the early Augment virus era that were given to the Pakleds as they were no longer needed.

Also, a belief within Pakled society developed that those with the largest Headwear had the most authority. Thus a new hierarchy was established with the Pakled Emperor and Empress having the largest headdress and the remaining heads of city-states along with the previous Monarch holding the title of Pakled King or Queen of their respective region.

This way the new rulership elevates in power while allowing the previous regime to remain in their title and the other fiefs to elevate to equal regional kingdoms of their own.

During the Empire's recent history, a few rebellions against the hierarchy grew as the thought of a caste system for their society was seen as unfair. However due to Pakled's innate short-term memory and instinctual perception of power gained through strength as a virtue.

The rebelling leaders usually end up becoming the next emperor as the show of strength that led to their victory is seen by the rebellion's followers as the worthiness of succession thus the imperial system is never really overthrown.

Near Extinction [ ]

As a Sovereign and Titan class investigative fleet began to close in on the conspirators of the power advancement plot of the Empire, the Pakleds themselves suddenly made their own plan to detonate a fusion nuclear device at their own homeworlds capital city.

Hiring several mercenary contractors and paying for resources across several black markets from 2 quadrants. The plan works, nearly inadvertently killing millions, and the detonation energy release nearly bores itself into Pakled Planet's core.

The captain of the USS Cerritos Carol Freeman as another part of the Pakleds plan was framed for the attack as one of the mercenaries was disguised as her via holographic imaging and security camera manipulation.

However, Captain Freeman was exonerated with a Starfleet investigation several weeks later that not only exposed their false accusation but their main plot to the reason why they themselves set up the near destruction of their own planet as they tried to create another massive "Samaritan snare" by in their belief that by destroying their capital the Federation and their allies would see the tragedy that they made seem was in part their fault, and they would reevacuate the planet's population to a planet with higher resources in the hopes they could build up their monstrous fleet even larger.

However, after discovering the plot, Starfleet does move them, to another planet close by in a neighboring system with a generally similar resource rate or amount so they cannot afford to advance their fleet any further.

The surviving population left on their homeworld was assisted by Federation terraforming specialists, along with a significant portion of the California class fleet providing engineering and agricultural rebuilding assistance.

Multiversal Crisis [ ]

The tentative peace was short-lived as while during the rebuilding process, due to the temporal interfering of Q in 2024 to create another test for Jean-Luc Picard another faction from an alternate timeline the Confederation of Earth accidentally entered into the Prime Universe.

After several incidents with Starfleet and other galactic factions, the Confederation sent out recon teams for surveillance to fully assess the military capabilities of the parallel reality. As so, Confederation intelligence covertly discovered the Pakleds military cache and capability and so immediately declared Pakled Planet as "sovereign" Confederate colonial land due to their standards of Manifest destiny and unwavering near delusional belief of Human "Superiority" over Pakled society.

Also, more realistically, Pakled military defense measures were far less secure than mainstream Federation or any other galactic faction so claiming the salvaged technology from Pakled shipyards were assured to be far easier and was a guarantee for the Confederation to use the reused tech as a military advantage for themselves.

With that declaration, the Confederation Corps orders 5 World Razer -class vessels along with a flotilla of Enterprise series ships to annex Pakled Planet. The invasion armada is led by the CSS Anton York (NCC-1865-B) under the command of the 5xGreat grandson of the ships' namesake Brigadier Christopher York .

The incident is offically named by Starfleet as the Battle of Pakled , Pakled society themselves called it the "Battle of the Enterprises" as in part, Pakleds cannot visually tell the difference between Starfleet vessels so they believe that a massive fight between ships All named Enterprise happened in orbit over their homeworld.

To detail further, most published Pakled retellings of the event have at least 7 Geordi La Forges , 5 Rikers , and dozens of Kirk's and Picard's all fighting each other. With all the female Humans named Janeway . As also, they only know Humans by the names of their most publically popular figures.

In reality, after a large surprise ambush both Mondor and defending California class ships had no footing with the Confederate invaders as while the Clumpship fleet had weapon superiority they had no tactical strategy experience compared to the swift maneuvering combatants.

However, due to a long range distress signal sent out they were met by a counter armada led by the NXT Wayfarer and 24th century United Space Force capitol strike cruisers AHS Eleanor Roosevelt and AHS Mae Jemison alongside a squad of Walker -class taken out of mothballs and newly built Kelvin rebuild Constitution -class ships equipped with I-Mod arrays and point defense Phaser emitters.

The majority of defending ships were from the Imperial Federation and an allied fleet from Copernica as even well-equipped Starfleet vessels of the time were not quite well-matched with the defenses of Confederate ships. After a multiple weeks long assault, Confederate forces were finally forced back. Which finalized in a full retreat.

IFUW forces and diplomats admired the Pakled drive to persevere even in desperate odds. Also, they found their system of Imperial hierarchy endearing and more towards its class structure open-minded compared to their more corrupt galactic neighbors. Although, it was poorly run as due to the Empire only being less than a decade old and their understanding of how to run such a society was based on stereotypes of monarchy from other alien societies.

As such after the conflict and towards the end of the overall crisis. Imperial Federation representatives offered Starfleet to relieve the Cali class rescue fleet from Pakled duty so IFUW ships can give relief and societal assistance to the again damaged planet and species.

Starfleet reluctantly agreed as other issues from the fallout of the crisis arose, and so several dozen Imperial and Copernican ships were sent as a combination war relief and monarchal reform fleet to the Planet, with only a few prime Starfleet vessels for assistance and supervision. The United fleet gave terraform rebuilding, infrastructure construction and improvement, and general government reform.

Imperial and Prime Starfleet agrees that the Pakleds still need an operational defensive fleet due to the recent past events, but cannot be allowed to have ships with the power of Dreadnoughts as they might try to restart their attempt to massively grow their fleet again and become a military liability to their interplanetary neighbors again.

As so the IFUWs Constitution fleet (both Types 1s and Type 2s ) are recommissioned and refitted with touch screens, improved scanning, heavier shielding, and moderately upgraded phase emitters. The repurposed fleet is gifted to the Pakleds as its new defense fleet. As to which, they have to convince them not to name Literally every ship the "Enterprise" just because they bear the resemblance to its most known ship.

By 2406 the Pakled Empire is made a member of the Imperial Federation on a probationary basis of the promise to not try to scavenge technology for their own ends. Surprisingly, they keep their word and by 2414 Pakleds are the first alien monarchy in the Prime Universe to receive full membership in Universe Delta.

Physiology [ ]

Pakleds when first encountered by many species are perceived as overweight and mentally slow however this is just a intentional facade as to appear slow and overall helpless. In reality many Pakleds are broad framed and barrel chested as they are evolutionary built to travel long distances over Rocky plains and dense forests for either hunting or gathering purposes.

They also can survive short distances in the vacuum of space for an currently unknown medically researched reason other than Pakleds simply see it as a proof of strength.

Pakled blood consists of a far lower oxygen reliant plasma giving it a purplish color.

The Pakleds are a heavyset humanoid species native to the Alpha Quadrant . To the casual observer, the Pakleds appear to be intellectually challenged, especially in their verbal skills.

The Pakleds are driven by their unwillingness to wait to gain their own technological knowledge. They therefore try to acquire technology from other species, generally by theft. (TNG: "Samaritan Snare")

In 2365, a Pakled transport first encountered the USS Enterprise-D in the Rhomboid Dronegar sector 006. The ship, named the Mondor, had sent out a Mayday because their ship was broken and they wished to acquire new technology. They were offered assistance by the Enterprise, who lent the Pakleds their chief engineer, Geordi La Forge, to help fix their ship. The Pakleds kidnapped La Forge, but eventually returned him after the Enterprise showed a display of its "force," with a harmless pyrotechnic display involving the Bussard collectors. (TNG: "Samaritan Snare")

In 2366, a Pakled trade ship rescued Lore after he had drifted in space for nearly two years. (TNG: "Brothers")

In the search for the Duras sisters, Lursa and B'Etor, in 2370, the USS Enterprise entered the Kalla system, which lies within Pakled space. (TNG: "Firstborn")

In late 2370, the Pakleds crossed the Demilitarized Zone to supply the Cardassians with a shipment of retro-viral vaccines. (TNG: "Preemptive Strike")

Pakleds frequently visited Deep Space 9 and were likely to be found at Quark's or on the Promenade.

When Major Kira was paying Kubus Oak a visit in DS9's holding cell, a Pakled was seen in the background, sitting in another cell. (DS9: "The Collaborator")

Two Pakleds visited Deep Space 9 during the strike of the employees of Quark's. Alongside a Bolian woman they were almost the only guests in the establishment. (DS9: "Bar Association")

Christopher Collins' 4 Star Trek Roles Explained

  • Christopher Collins portrayed multiple characters in Star Trek, including Captain Kargan and Captain Grebnedlog in TNG.
  • Collins' portrayal of Markalian Durg in DS9 showed his diverse acting range in the Star Trek universe.
  • Despite his brief appearances, Collins made a lasting impact on the franchise with his various roles.

Actor and stand-up comedian Christopher Collins played four different Star Trek characters in episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . In TNG's "Matter of Honor," Collins appeared as the Klingon Captain Kargan, who butted heads with his temporary First Officer, Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes). Collins played another Captain in TNG's "Samaritan Snare," this time a Pakled named Grebnedlog. In DS9 , Collins appeared as Markalians in both of his appearances, one of whom was a mercenary named Durg, while the other was an unnamed guard.

Christopher Collins was an actor and comedian most known for his voice-over roles in animated projects. He provided the voice for Cobra Commander in several different versions of the animated G.I. Joe series. He also voiced Starscream and numerous other characters in the first Transformers animated series. In addition to his Star Trek appearances, Collins appeared in episodes of Doogie Howser, M.D., Seinfeld, NYPD Blue, and Married... with Children . He had a few minor film roles, including appearances in Road House, True Identity, and A Stranger Among Us . Collins also had a successful career in stand-up comedy and won the San Francisco International Stand-Up Comedy Competition in 1990. Tragically, Collins passed away in 1994 at the age of 44.

Christopher Collins originated the voice of Mr. Burns on The Simpsons , but had to turn over the role to Harry Shearer after only a few episodes. Shearer modeled his performance on that of Collins.

Every Upcoming Star Trek Movie & TV Show

Captain kargan, star trek: the next generation season 2, episode 8 - "a matter of honor".

In Star Trek: The Next Generation 's "Matter of Honor," Commander Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) participates in an officer exchange program and takes on the role of First Officer on the Klingon vessel, the Pagh. Christopher Collins portrays the Klingon commander of the Pagh, Captain Kargan, who is suspicious of Riker from the jump. When a strange bacteria is discovered on the Pagh's outer hull, Kargan suspects Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-D are responsible.

"A Matter of Honor" updated the Klingons for TNG and established their culture moving forward.

When Kargan refuses to listen to his temporary First Officer, Riker has Kargan beamed over to the Enterprise and takes over command of the Pagh. After the Enterprise helps repair the Pagh, Kargan returns to his ship and dismisses Riker for being insubordinate. Still, it's clear Kargan has developed a certain amount of respect for Riker, despite all of his Klingon bluster. With its depictions of life aboard a Klingon ship, "A Matter of Honor" updated the Klingons for TNG and established their culture moving forward.

Captain Grebnedlog

Star trek: the next generation season 2, episode 17 - "samaritan snare".

Christopher Collins' next Star Trek appearance came later in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 2 when he played Captain Grebnedlog, the commander of the Pakled ship Mondor. As Captain Picard heads to a nearby starbase for a medical procedure, Commander Riker is left in command of the USS Enterprise-D. The Enterprise soon receives a distress call from the Mondor, and Captain Grebnedlog tells Riker and his crew that the unintelligent Pakleds need help to make their ship go.

Commander Riker sends Lt. Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) over to help with repairs, but the Pakleds soon take Geordi as a hostage. While Grebnedlog and his crew may not be very intelligent, they have managed to gain technology by stealing it from other species. Riker makes some questionable decisions in "Samaritan Snare," but he does trick the Pakleds into releasing La Forge in the end.

The Pakleds did not appear on screen again until the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks , where their ridiculous but sometimes dangerous antics are a much better fit.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Season 1, Episode 9 - "The Passenger"

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s “The Passenger,” Christopher Collins played Durg, a Markalian mercenary who met with the profit-hungry Ferengi Quark (Armin Shimerman). When a criminal Kobliad named Rao Vantika (James Harper) transfers his consciousness to Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig), he employs Durg to help him steal a shipment of deuridium. Durg and his fellow mercenaries attack the freighter transporting the deuridium, the Norkova, killing the bridge crew and taking control of the ship.

The crew of space station Deep Space Nine then trap the Norkova with a tractor beam, but Vantika continues to try to escape. Still inhabiting the body of Dr. Bashir , Vantika orders Durg to jump to warp speed (which would destroy the freighter), but he refuses. Vantika then kills Durg, before Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) and Lt. Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) figure out a way to communicate with Bashir and resolve the situation.

Unnamed Markalian Guard

Star trek: deep space nine season 2, episode 19 - "blood oath".

Christopher Collins played another member of the Markalian species in DS9’s “Blood Oath. This Markalian served as an assistant and guard for the infamous criminal known as The Albino (Bill Bolender). Many years before, three Klingon warships were dispatched to capture the Albino, and while they managed to destroy his base, the Albino himself escaped. These three Klingon ships were led by Kor (John Colicos) , Koloth (William Campbell), and Kang (Michael Ansara). The Albino later retaliated by killing each of the Klingon’s firstborn sons, which prompted them to swear a blood oath to kill the Albino.

Kor, Koloth, and Kang all appeared as Klingons on Star Trek: The Original Series , and all three actors reprise their respective roles.

The three Klingons arrive on Deep Space Nine eighty-one years later, after Kang reveals he has discovered the Albino’s location. With the help of Jadzia Dax (whose former symbiote Curzon was godfather to Kang’s son), the three Klingons attack the Albino. After alerting the Albino to the presence of the Klingons, the guard is ultimately killed by Kang while the Albino cowers behind him. Although Kang manages to kill the Albino, he and Koloth both die from their wounds. With the three boisterous Klingons stealing the show, Collins’ Markalian guard does not make as much of an impression, but he nevertheless left his mark on the Star Trek franchise.

Star Trek Just Delivered a New Take on a Classic Next Generation Episode

Star Trek: Discovery did its own version of the Next Generation finale, highlighting the differences between the two shows.

Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.

Whatever the problems in its first two seasons, Star Trek: The Next Generation ended in perfect fashion. “All Good Things…” saw Captain Picard become unstuck in time, visiting the past, present, and future of his ship.

“All Good Things…” allowed the show and fans to see just how far TNG had come over the years. It revisits the clunky inaugural season via Picard’s interactions in the past with Tasha Yar, whose death midway through season one only underscored the tumultuous first two years of the series. And by going into the future, checking in on Professor Data, Captain Beverly Picard, and journalist Geordi La Forge (married to Leah Brahms, for some reason), the show imagined future adventures beyond the series finale for our favorite characters.

By the time that present tense Picard joins his crew at the poker table, “All Good Things…” confirms what we fans always felt. This was an ensemble show with a wonderful cast, and we like seeing them all together.

Ad – content continues below

That feel-good ending is actually representative of some of the criticism surrounding Star Trek: Discovery . Instead of continuing the ensemble approach that TNG and all of its followers took ( Enterprise , to a lesser extent), Discovery has a single protagonist in the form of Michael Burnham . Burnham serves as the main character in every storyline, in a way not seen since the days of William Shatner stealing his co-stars’ lines for Kirk. The bridge crew of Discovery have names, a few facial expressions, and that’s about it.

So when the fourth episode of Discovery ‘s final season, “ Face the Strange ,” gives Burnham a chance to revisit her own crew’s past as well as see the Discovery’s possible distant future, it’s a take on TNG ‘s “All Good Things…” idea that hits very differently. But there’s no denying it’s also true to the ethos of what Discovery is versus The Next Generation ‘s approach to storytelling in the ’90s.

In “Face the Strange,” Burnham and her new First Officer Commander Rayner are sent time jumping around the Discovery. The episode involves the treasure hunters Moll and L’ak distracting the Discovery on its chase for the Progenitor tech by infecting Burnham and Rayner with a device that thrusts them into ship’s past and future.

The episode resolves when Burnham and Rayner convince members of the Discovery crew from season one to jump to warp, which allows Stamets (whose Tardigrade DNA puts him outside of time) to remove the infecting time bug and send the duo back to their time. To do so, Rayner and Burnham have to prove that they know the bridge crew, who do not recognize Rayner and see Burnham as a mutineer.

Of course, they succeed, but not in a manner that will satisfy most viewers who remember Picard’s trip down memory lane in TNG . The crew interactions just don’t hit the same way in the Discovery version of this concept. Rayner wins over the crew not by pointing to qualities that viewers have seen by watching every season of Discovery , but by repeating exposition from the previous episode. Even many of Burnham’s pleas fall flat, heightening only the surface level of even well-developed characters like Tilly.

But then there’s the crux of Burnham’s argument. When her younger, angrier self storms onto the bridge, the current Burnham gets desperate. Her only recourse is to reveal details about the death of Ariam, the android member of the crew who sacrifices herself at the end of the season two episode “Project Daedalus.” Discovery handled Ariam’s death in the most clunky way possible, only giving the character any attention in the previous episode, manipulating audiences into caring about her sacrifice.

However, when Burnham revisits the moment in “Face the Strange,” she doubles down on the emotional appeals. Burnham tells the crew about how Ariam chose to die to save the ship, and while Tilly and Owo insist that they would never let that happen, Ariam interjects. She would gladly sacrifice herself for the others, if that was the only way to save them.

In other words, Burnham doesn’t make a logical argument about the science behind her arrival from the future, nor does she assert her authority and commandeer the ship to do what needs to be done. Rather, she leans heavy into the emotion, tugging on everyone’s heartstrings as a solution to the problem they face.

If you like your Star Trek to be logical and professional, then Burnham’s solution is just one more example of the shortcomings in Discovery . But then again, why are you watching Discovery at this point if you’re not down with that approach?

In the same way that “All Good Things…” gave TNG a victory lap to celebrate everything that the once ill-advised show was and had become, “Face the Strange” embraces Discovery ‘s own unique identity. This is a show in which things happen not because they make logical sense, but because they make emotional sense.

As Discovery comes to an end, “Face the Strange” highlights the show’s unlikely path from oddball prequel to an exploration of the future of Star Trek . But as much as the show has changed cast members and settings, it’s always been about solving problems through emotional intelligence. The “All Good Things…” riff in “Face the Strange” proves that if Discovery was ever going to be the show that some Trekkies want, it should have changed a long time ago.

Star Trek: Discovery is streaming now on Paramount+.

Star trek origin movie officially announced by paramount for 2025 release.

Paramount Pictures officially announces the next Star Trek movie at CinemaCon, which will arrive in movie theaters in 2025.

  • Paramount Pictures announces new Star Trek movie for 2025, directed by Toby Haynes and written by Seth Grahame-Smith.
  • Chris Pine-led Star Trek 4 remains in development, while the new film is an origin story set decades before Abrams' 2009 movie.
  • Alongside the Star Trek origin movie, Paramount reveals a packed slate of exciting films for 2025-26 at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Paramount Pictures officially announces the next Star Trek movie, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2025. As reported in January, the next Star Trek movie isn't the long-delayed, Chris Pine-led Star Trek 4 produced by J.J. Abrams, which remains in development at Paramount. Rather, the next Star Trek movie is an origin story directed by Toby Haynes ( Star Wars: Andor ) and written by Seth Grahame-Smith (A braham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ).

Screen Rant' s Rob Keyes (@rob_keyes) is at CinemaCon in Las Vegas where Paramount Pictures confirmed the next Star Trek movie , currently called Untitled Star Trek Origin Story , to be released in 2025. J.J. Abrams is also producing Untitled Star Trek Origin Story, which takes place decades before Abrams' Star Trek 2009 movie. See Rob Keyes' Tweet below:

Paramount also confirmed Untitled Star Trek Origin Story will begin production later this year for theatrical release in 2025.

Every Upcoming Star Trek Movie & TV Show

Star trek's new movies in theaters and paramount plus explained, star trek is finally making movies again.

After nearly a decade, Star Trek i s back to making movies. Star Trek on Paramount+ has created a television renaissance for the franchise, but the theatrical side of Star Trek overseen by Paramount Pictures has languished in development hell since Star Trek Beyond bowed in the summer of 2016. Toby Haynes' Untitled Star Trek Origin Story is yet another prequel, but as it's said to be set decades before Star Trek 2009, it could very well be set after Star Trek: Enterprise 's mid-22nd century voyages but otherwise be an origin story for both Star Trek 's Prime and alternate Kelvin timelines .

Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 4 , which is the "final chapter" of the USS Enterprise crew led by Chris Pine's Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto's Spock, has seen some movement with a new screenwriter, Steve Yockey ( The Flight Attendant ), tackling the long-delayed sequel. Pine and his fellow Star Trek actors, including Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Sofia Boutella, have all expressed their eagerness to return if Star Trek 4 can come together.

It's a positive sign that Star Trek movies are finally coming back.

Paramount+ is making their own Star Trek movies, with the recently-wrapped Star Trek: Section 31 awaiting a release date. Starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh, Section 31 i s the first made-for-streaming Star Trek movie, and it is reportedly set during Star Trek 's "lost era" with connections to Star Trek: The Next Generation. Section 31 could get a sequel if successful, and the Star Trek: Picard spinoff dubbed Star Trek: Legacy may also become a streaming movie instead of a series. However all this shakes out, it's a positive sign that Star Trek movies are finally coming back.

Grebnedlog was the captain of the Pakled ship Mondor that was encountered by the USS Enterprise -D in 2365 .

After Grebnedlog had asked for repair assistance, he captured Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge and held him hostage . The Pakled got their technology by stealing it from other species , so Grebnedlog informed Commander Riker that he would release La Forge if all the information from the Enterprise -D computer were transferred to his ship. After La Forge managed to disarm the Pakled's on-board weapons, Riker threatened to destroy them and faked the destruction of their weapons by means of a crimson force field . Grebnedlog, impressed by this force field, released La Forge because the Enterprise -D was "strong". ( TNG : " Samaritan Snare ")

'Star Trek: Lower Decks' May Be Looking For a New Home After Cancellation at Paramount+

It wouldn't be the first animated 'Trek' series to move to a different streamer!

The Big Picture

  • Star Trek: Lower Decks may find a new home after being cancelled at Paramount+.
  • Jack Quaid expressed gratitude for the show and hopes for future seasons elsewhere, praising the cast and crew for their hard work.
  • Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 will premiere on Paramount+ later this year.

Star Trek: Lower Decks may have been cancelled at Paramount+ , but it may not be the end of the USS Cerritos ' mission. At least one cast member of the animated series has voiced hopes that, like fellow Paramount+ castaway Star Trek: Prodigy , the show could find a new home. Jack Quaid , who voices Brad Boimler on the series, expressed his hopes for a pickup at another network on his Instagram: "Hopefully we find a new home, but until then please look forward to an amazing season five (airing this fall)".

Quaid also expressed his gratitude for the cast and crew behind the series:

"I can’t begin to tell you what an honor it’s been to be a part of this show and the Star Trek universe at large. I am unbelievably grateful for 5 awesome seasons with this wonderful family. I want to thank each and every person who put so much of their hard work and talent into every episode. You are AMAZING. The good news is that everyone who makes Lower Decks LOVES making Lower Decks . I could play Boimler for 17 more seasons. No joke. I’m serious. I love that purple-haired nerd."

In addition to voicing Boimler on all five seasons of the show, Quaid also played Boimler in live-action on " Those Old Scientists ," a crossover episode with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .

How Was 'Star Trek: Prodigy' Saved?

Star Trek: Prodigy , a CG-animated series aimed at a younger audience than most Star Trek fare (although still loaded with nods to Trek lore) debuted on Paramount+ in 2021. Starring a crew of teenage misfit aliens and a holographic artificial intelligence patterned after Admiral Kathryn Janeway ( Kate Mulgrew ) as they attempt to escape a fanatical dictator in an experimental prototype ship, it was a hit with critics and audiences and was renewed for a second season.

In 2023, however, it was cancelled and wiped entirely from Paramount+ , even as its unaired second season was nearly completed. It came at a time when studios, facing the end of the streaming bubble, were beginning to not only cancel series but wipe them entirely from their streaming services as a tax write-off. After an extensive letter-writing campaign by fans , the series was sold to Netflix ; the first season of the series is available to stream now, while the second season is expected to be released later this year.

Star Trek: Lower Decks chronicles the adventures of the Cerritos , a Starfleet support vessel assigned to less glamorous duties than the likes of the Enterprise . In addition to Quaid, it also stars Tawny Newsome , Noël Wells , Eugene Cordero , Dawnn Lewis , Jerry O'Connell , Fred Tatasciore , and Gillian Vigman . Star Trek: Lower Decks ' fifth (and for now, final) season will premiere on Paramount+ later this year . Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
