9 Best Places to see the Sunrise In London from a Londoner

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 16/03/2024

Just before dawn breaks, in the early-morning twilight hours, is the time to see London’s skyline at its most magical. As the sun rises, watch over the capital as it becomes basked in golden light and slowly transforms into a wash of colours.

The ideal time to snap a photograph and witness London’s beauty is just as the sun begins to rise (or sunset time). You can enjoy the most brilliant honey hues from around the city.

Most people cluster together to watch the sunset in London however, those that wake at the crack of dawn to watch the sky slowly break into fiery colours will certainly be rewarded.

Sunrise in London in the United Kingdom: Best Times

The best way to catch the  sunrise in real-time  is to know exactly what time, and in what direction, it will be rising from based on the position of sun & moon.

Take a look below for an approximate guide as to when the sun will rise in greater London during each season.

Sunrise in Summer

Months: June – August

Summer in London means you can expect beautiful long days and much warmer weather. At the beginning of summertime, the sun starts to rise as early as 4.48 am in a north-easterly direction, and come August it starts rising a little later at 5.24 am local time.

image 18

Sunrise in Autumn

Months: September – November

In autumn, the sun begins to rise at 6.13 am in a north-easterly direction, and come November, you can catch the sun peeking out in a south-easterly direction at 6.54 am.

Sunrise  in Winter

Months: December – February

In wintertime, although chilly, London provides magical sunrises. The sun begins to rise in a south-easterly direction at 7.43 am and come February you can catch sunup around the same time.

image 12

Sunrise in Spring

Months: March-May

At the beginning of spring, in March, things to begin to warm up. The sun starts to rise in an easterly direction at 6.45 am. And by the end of the season, it will shift earlier and begin to rise as early as 5.32 am. In my view, this is the best time to watch the sunrise in London.

9 Enchanting Places to Watch the Sunrise in London

Right, now that we’ve covered the sunrise times and directions, let’s take a squizz through the top places to watch London’s break of day – in no particular order.

NB: When I was researching this post I found that several articles mentioned spots like the top of the Tate Modern or the London Eye. I am sure the sunrise views from these spots are stunning.

image 11

However, The London Eye and the Tate Modern are not normally open to the public at the times when the sun rises in London. Unless you know someone – in which case take advantage!

Also, check public transport times when you are planning your London sunrise. The tube will generally not be running during London sunrise times in the summer. However, there are some  tube lines that run 24 hours  on Friday and Saturday nights.

However, there are  night buses  that run all night that could be helpful. And of course black cabs and ubers run at all hours.

This post focuses on the places in London that it is possible to access at sunrise all year round.

9 Best Places to Watch the Sunrise in London

1. primrose hill.

Primrose Hill is located north of  Regent’s Park . It’s nestled in one of London’s many parks, and the beautiful green space invites locals and visitors alike to enjoy its phenomenal sunrises (it’s often a misty sunrise) and sunsets.

primrose hill sunrise

Primrose Hill’s grassy green summit almost reaches 63 meters above sea level. It’s filled with unique charms nestled above the bustling city centre. The sunrises here are unique, with unbroken views stretching over the city as far as Canary Wharf.

Even on the most overcast of days, the views of the city are picturesque. It’s well worth waking up at the crack of dawn and taking a brisk walk to the summit to see the sunrise pop over this popular spot.

image 23

After the sunrise head down to Regents Park Road for lots of super cute cafe and breakfast options such as Ripe Kitchen and the Greenberry Cafe. Or if you’re a foodie check out some  London Food Tours.

2. Hyde Park

Seizing a beautiful morning sunrise at Hyde Park is the best way to start your day. The perfectly manicured London parkland is peaceful in the early morning. Grab a cup of hot cocoa in your flask and head to the grassy field to watch the sun rising against the silhouette of the leafy trees.

image 8

With plenty of wildlife waking up at the crack of dawn too, you can expect to meet an abundance of squirrels and birds as they begin their day.

Head to the Serpentine and the area around it for some of the best places to stop and watch the sunrise. The Serpentine Bar and Kitchen is a great place for post sunrise breakfast and coffee but doesn’t generally open until 8am.

image 16

Top Tip: if getting up early isn’t your thing, then Hyde Park sunsets are also truly spectacular. And if you’re into seeing more of Royal London, take a  walking tour  to discover central London and other important Royal destinations.

3. Richmond Park

Step away from the bustling city and to enjoy peace in nature at Richmond Park in London SW. It’s London’s largest Royal Park covering an area of 2500 acres and boasting stunning vistas of wide-open spaces, clusters of deer herds, and rolling grasslands.

image 21

Find yourself a spot under one of the ancient trees, lay a blanket down and pour yourself some tea before the sun ruptures the sky with fiery oranges and reds.

The best view is from King Henry’s Mound where you’ll be able to see distant views of St Paul’s Cathedral as the sky brightens. Check out Pembroke Lodge for post sunrise coffee and breakfast.

The Roehampton Cafe opens at 9am and there are some other kiosks dotted through Richmond park.

image

The gates are open 24 hours to pedestrians. In summer they open at 7 am for vehicles, and at 7.30 in winter.

4. Hampstead Heath

London is quite a flat city. Its highest point is only 139 metres and it is at Hampstead Heath. Hampstead Heath is beloved by Londoners. Located in north London it is 790 acres of rolling hills, woodland and ponds.

image 4

The best place to watch the London sunrise in Hampstead Heath is from the top of Parliament Hill.

If you’re visiting in the warmer months be like a local and bring your swimsuit and head to the mixed bathing pond after for a swim. Or head to the area around Hampstead Heath tube for a delicious breakfast.

image 22

5. Greenwich Park

Lovely Greenwich Park is a great place to watch the sunrise in London for most of the year. Head to The Royal Observatory (yes this is actually where Greenwich Mean Time is measured) for the best views of the London skyline. If you see the General Wolfe Statue you are in the right place.

royal observatory

The  Royal Observatory  is super interesting and well worth a visit. Having said that it generally doesn’t open till 10am so head into super cute Greenwich instead for breakfast and some exploring.

view from the royal observatory

Fun Fact: The top of Greenwich Park is the start point for the London Marathon.

6. St Katharine’s Dock

St Katharine’s Dock  is located on The Thames just next to Tower Bridge on the Tower of London or north side of the river. It is central London’s only marina.

image 13

This former dock is now a marina with apartments, restaurants, shopping and lots going on. Its location provides a good view of the sunrise and the many boats of the marina provide fantastic foreground.

And importantly St Katharine’s Dock has lots of restaurants for a post sunrise breakfast.

7. Butler’s Wharf

Butler’s Wharf is a historic building on the south side of the Thames in London SE almost directly opposite St Katharine’s Dock. The name Butler’s Wharf describes both the building and the area around it.

image 20

Butler’s Wharf Pier is a great place to specifically head to watch the sunrise. Or even better depending on the time of year (due to opening times) you may be able to grab breakfast at Brown’s which has a fantastic location right on the corner of the River Thames and River Neckfinger.

8. London’s Bridges

One of my favourite places to watch the sunrise over London is from one of  London’s bridges . Their positions along the Thames mean several have some fantastic views – and the bridges themselves can make for a great photo when positioned in the foreground.

image 7

The Thames is a windy river – particularly in the portion which runs through London. There are two “stretches” where it runs east to west and thus tends to offer better sunrise views.

The first is between Tower Bridge and Westminster Bridge. Tower Bridge is a great place to watch the sun rise. It would be even better if you could see it from the top of the bridge but alas most of the year the Tower Bridge Experience will not be open so head to the bridge instead.

image 1

From London Bridge don’t miss trying to get a shot with the sunrise reflecting off the modern City Hall building. And you may well be able to get coffee and something to eat first as London Bridge is next to Borough Market which opens early (or visit afterward for a more leisurely breakfast).

The next east-west stretch of the Thames is between Battersea Bridge and Vauxhall Bridge. I particularly like the Chelsea Embankment area between Battersea and Albert Bridges for sunrise shots. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/6Siz–8mme8

image 14

Albert Bridge is my personal favourite London Bridge and can look stunning in the foreground of a shot (Chelsea Bridge is nice too). Also, from this part of the Thames you can capture the majestic chimneys of Battersea Power Station, also great in a photo.

image 10

9. The Shangri-La Hotel

I’ll be honest – this is my favourite option on this list of sunrise London spots! Not only does it perhaps provide the most spectacular views of the London sunrise it also provides warmth, and amazing breakfast and good coffee!

image 3

The Shangri La restaurant in London occupies 18 floors of The Shard Building, starting on the 34th floor. The Shard viewing deck generally doesn’t open until 10am and is not cheap.

image 17

However, the Shangri La opens for breakfast at 630am at its fantastic Ting restaurant. The breakfast itself is awesome and features local ingredients. So enjoy breakfast whilst you enjoy the floor-to-ceiling windows at the Ting and check out the London sunrise from multiple angles.

Sunrise in London

The exciting part of waiting for the sun to rise is seeing those warm golden tones appear. During these early mornings, you’ll feel the city’s stillness, just before it starts to buzz and come alive.

Whether you’re on the hunt for the perfect picture to snap or on an early morning adventure, London will surprise you either way.

So, now that I’ve covered the top sunrise spots in London, it’s time for you to grab your cameras, a blanket, and your flasks and plan your place to watch the sunup. London sunrises are generally quite cold so make sure you have all you need to relax and enjoy the show.

The  Great Northern Hotel  is ridiculously close to Kings Cross and St Pancras stations which is incredibly convenient. The hotel dates back to 1854 but has had a major refurb so it feels fresh and modern.

The  Hoxton hotel  is in the heart of East London in Shoreditch and a perfect base for exploration. The rooms aren’t huge but the location makes up for it – as does the great value for London with rooms starting at £99 a night.

The Best Stonehenge Tours To Take in 2024 and Why

Brie Greenhalgh Last Updated: October 24, 2023

Whether it’s your first or third time to London, if you haven’t made the trek out to Stonehenge, it’s time to fix that. Booking one of the best Stonehenge tours is the perfect way to see these fascinating rocks up close without having to worry about how to get there. Plus, tours of Stonehenge from London usually include other cool stops along the way, like Windsor Castle or the Salisbury Cathedral. Find out which tour is right for you!

Pro Tip:  Planning what to do on your trip to London? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you’re in the city. Check out our  guide to London  for more planning resources, our  top Stonhenge tours  for a memorable trip, and  how to visit Stonehenge .

Should You Take a Tour to Stonehenge?

Short answer: Absolutely. Even if only to eliminate the hassle of arranging your own tickets and transportation to this incredible place outside of London.

Stonehenge sits about 90 miles west of London, so you’ll need a plan to get there. Most people opt for a guided tour since they won’t have to worry about driving, navigating, or obtaining their own tickets. We definitely recommend doing the same, but with a small group so you have more opportunities to get to know your guide and fellow travelers.

You’ll learn much more about Stonehenge, Windsor Castle, Bath, Avebury, West Kennet, Salisbury Cathedral, and much more if you book a day trip with a local guide. And depending on your preference, you could even book an early morning or evening entrance at Stonehenge when the general public has left. These are unique opportunities to see the Inner Circle of Stonehenge that you won’t forget!

Three of the Best Stonehenge Tours

The origins and construction of the rocks at Stonehenge are technically unknown, but there are plenty of theories and legends. Aliens, giants, Druids. Your driver-guide will share all of these as you ride along the English countryside. All of these tours include stops at Stonehenge, so you’ll just need to decide what time of day you want to visit and what other sites interest you the most.

You can opt for a self-guided tour (tickets included) at Windsor Castle or time at Avebury to see the ancient manmade mound that’s the size of an Egyptian pyramid. Or perhaps you’d love to see an original copy of the Magna Carta that shaped the future for the rights of all mankind. Check out the best Stonehenge tours below and choose what’s best for you!

  • Early Access Stonehenge Morning Tour from London with Inner Circle
  • After Hours Stonehenge Inner Circle Tour from London

1. Windsor, Stonehenge, and Bath Day Trip from London

sunrise tours london

Windsor Castle

Your first stop out of London is Windsor Castle—the late Queen’s favorite residence. There are 13,000 acres here, and you’ll have tickets to enter the castle to explore the areas open to the public. This is a self-guided tour as no tour guides are allowed inside. Not to worry! Your driver-guide will have prepped you with plenty of information about what you’ll see here and why it’s such a beloved castle for the royal family.

Then you’ll head to Stonehenge where you’ll get to walk the road leading to these famous ancient ruins. Dating back some 4,000 years, these rocks have an intriguing history that is still yet to be determined. Why and how these structures were built remains a mystery, not to mention by whom. Yes, it’s just a bunch of rocks, but they’re 20-ton rocks on average, positioned perfectly in a strange circle for some purpose. It’s worth seeing in person!

While the baths at Bath were used by the ancient Celts, they weren’t beautified and built up until the Romans arrived. They are how the city came to be named, and it’s worth planning ahead to get tickets to see them. This tour offers free time in this city so you can explore whatever interests you most whether it’s the Roman baths or the Jane Austen Museum.

Highlights:

  • Round-trip transportation from London
  • Entry to Windsor Castle
  • Entry to Stonehenge during the day
  • Free time in Bath (explore or pre-book an activity)

2. Early Access Stonehenge Morning Tour from London with Inner Circle

This tour leaves London super early so you can arrive at Stonehenge for an exclusive, early-access entry before it opens to the general public. This means you’ll visit the Inner Circle of Stonehenge around sunrise as your guide shares all we know and suspect about Stonehenge. The morning light and solitude make this an extra special experience for any early bird looking for a day trip to Stonehenge.

Salisbury Cathedral

A stop at Salisbury is up next. This historic town lays claim to two impressive things for native Britons: a cathedral with the tallest spire in England and an original copy of the Magna Carta. This document laid the foundation for human rights around the world. You’ll have time to eat lunch here and explore a little of this ancient town before heading back to London in the afternoon.

  • Exclusive, early-access to Stonehenge
  • Guided tour of Inner Circle (not available to general public)
  • Visit to Salisbury Cathedral and Magna Carta

3. After Hours Stonehenge Inner Circle Tour from London

Silbury Hill and West Kennet

Depart London in the mid-morning and head to Silbury Hill to see another mysterious piece of Britain’s past. A Neolithic man-made mound that’s roughly the size of an Egyptian pyramid and about 4,000 years old! And at West Kennet Long Barrow, you’ll see ancient burial grounds that date back even further about 5,000 years. That’s old!

You might not know that Avebury also has some monolithic rocks that resemble Stonehenge on a smaller scale. They’re another great stop that add to your overall “ancient ruins of Britain” experience on this Stonehenge tour from London. Plus, you’ll have free time to enjoy lunch in Avebury and explore this charming little town before moving on.

Stonehenge Inner Circle

Your last stop is what you’ve been waiting for: an after-hours entrance to Stonehenge. What you might not know is that the Inner Circle is closed to the public during the day, so you can only receive guided access here before or after the regular opening hours. That makes this sunset Stonehenge tour even more special and memorable. You’ll be mesmerized by the dwindling light in the late hours of the day as you explore Stonehenge without the crowds.

  • Visit to Silbury Hill man-made mound
  • Visit to burial grounds in West Kennet Long Barrow
  • Explore Avebury and the monoliths
  • Exclusive, after-hours access to Stonehenge
  • Guided tour of the Inner Circle

10 Breathtaking Spots to Watch the Sunrise in London

  • David Angel
  • London , England , United Kingdom

There’s nothing more captivating than a glorious London sunrise. At sunrise, just for a few minutes, the great metropolis seems serene, and you feel like you have it all to yourself. Until you head back to the Tube and meet the morning commute head-on, of course!

In this guide, I’ll show you ten of the best places to see and photograph the sunrise in London . I also advise you on the best time of year to visit them, and how to get to each of them by public transport. Good luck with the weather, and enjoy.

Table of Contents

Sunrise in London times

Sunrise in london – when is the best time of year.

Over around 20 years of shooting sunrise in London I’ve found that the shorter months – especially November to February – are the most productive for getting those rich red skies.

That said, some of the locations we describe are great for sunrise in London at other times of year, including summer.

Sunrise in London – Tips

  • If you’re planning to capture a sunrise, look to get to your location up to an hour before sunrise time in London
  • It’s the same principle as staying around an hour or more after sunset to see the afterglow – you often see the best colours in the ‘pre-glow’ period up to an hour before sunrise
  • This means you may have to set the alarm for 0230-0300 in summer, to allow yourself to get across the city to your chosen location
  • London sunrise and sunset times vary greatly – sunrise in London in June is as early as 0443 on the longest day of the year, June 21 st , and at 0804 on the shortest day, December 21 st
  • For a winter sunrise in London, I’ve found it’s best to be on location by 0645-0700 – which means you get a veritable lie-in compared with summer
  •  For London public transport, use the excellent Transport for London website
  • Many of these sunrise locations in London also happen to be among the best places to watch sunsets in London – check out our companion article on this for more ideas

Best Places to See the Sunrise in London

Sunrise In London – Around Tower Bridge

1. tower bridge london.

Image of Tower Bridge and Girl With A Dolphin sculpture London

The most iconic of all bridges in London , Tower Bridge stands out as one of the best places to see dawn in London. The silhouette of Tower Bridge is unforgettable, but it also makes a great vantage point to view a sunrise in London.

I particularly like the effect of the first light of the day on the blue and white paint on the Bridge, and sections of it frame famous London landmarks along the river. In the case of sunrise, this means the Shard, but could also mean the skyscrapers of the City of London.

If you’re in the vicinity, take a short walk to the Tower Hotel right next to the Bridge, where you’ll find a (possibly familiar) sculpture, Girl With A Dolphin, with the Tower Bridge and Shard just behind.

When to see this sunrise : The shot of the Shard from the Bridge works best in winter, when the light hits the Bridge and Shard from an angle to the left, whereas in summer the light would be ‘flat’, right behind you. During Vhe longer months I’d be inclined to shoot using the Bridge to frame the City skyline instead.

The shot I’ve included of the Bridge and the Girl With A Dolphin was made early one morning in June.

Getting there: Tower Hill tube

2. Thames Path

Image of Tower Bridge London sunrise

Tower Bridge is one of the best-known sunrises in London, its striking silhouette ideal for early morning with a dramatic, colourful sky. I’ve shot it a few times in winter, though its location means you can see and photograph it at sunrise all year round.

It’s one of the easiest sunrises in London as you won’t have far to walk to reach it from the Tube or numerous bus stops on the north (City) side of London Bridge. I love the warm colours of a winter sunrise, and to get the best of them with Tower Bridge, get there an hour before sunrise.

Walk down the stairs from London Bridge to the Thames Path, and follow the route at along the north bank of the river. You only have to walk five minutes or so to walk from there to find an ideal spot.

When to see this sunrise: Ours was shot in the depths of December, and as the days get longer and the sun rises earlier you need to move back, then onto London Bridge (from which you also see HMS Belfast) and around to the South Bank. In summer the sun rises to the north-east, with the towers of Canary Wharf in the distance.

Getting there: Monument Tube for the north side of the river, or London Bridge Tube for the south side.

Sunrise In London – Locations in North London

1. archway bridge.

Image of the Shard London at sunrise

This is the least-known of our London sunrise locations, but it’s also one of the very best, giving an amazing overview of the City of London.

Archway is off the beaten path London for most visitors, a 19 th century suburb between Holloway and Highgate named after this bridge, which links Highgate Hill with (eventually) Crouch End. Its official name is the Hornsey Lane Bridge, but its also known as Suicide Bridge.

The bridge offers one of the most inspiring views of London. It’s in the north-west of the city, and the view is south-east, with everything from the Gherkin to the Shard visible.

When to see this sunrise: This is very much one for the winter months, from November to February, when the London sunrise time is between 0700 and 0800

Getting there: Northern Line High Barnet branch line to Archway, then a half-mile (800 metres) walk up Highgate Hill, turning right onto Hornsey Lane

2. Hampstead Heath

Image of the City of London at sunrise

Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath is a great location for watching sunrise over London. It’s around a mile (1.6 km) from the Archway Bridge described above, and the view is not dissimilar, with the City of London skyline the main point of interest and The Shard some way off to the right.

The shot above is a close-up of the City skyline, though it has changed in the last three or four years with the addition of some of the newer most famous buildings in London , including the Walkie Talkie and Cheese Grater.

Best time for this sunrise: Winter is the best time for the dramatic pink and red sky behind the City skyscrapers, whereas spring and summer are when you’re likely to get great early light on the buildings.

Getting there : Hampstead Heath Overground station is the closest station to Parliament Hill, and Tufnell Park and Archway (Northern Line High Barnet branch) Tube stations are around a mile away.

Sunrises In London – Westminster and Central London

1. london eye sunrise.

Image of London Eye ferris wheel at sunrise

It would be incredible to photograph sunrise in London from this high vantage point overlooking the river Thames and Westminster, but as it doesn’t open until mid-morning, we have to make do with seeing it at sunrise instead.

The London Eye is an impressive sight set against a glowing orange sky, and you get the opportunity to see throughout the year.

Our shot – from the Victoria Embankment, across the river from it, was made in the winter months, but if you walk back along the Embankment towards the Houses of Parliament, or even onto Westminster Bridge, you’ll see something similar into the summer months.

When to see this sunrise: Throughout the year

Getting there: Westminster Tube (Circle, District and Jubilee lines) is a 5-minute walk away

2. Victoria Embankment – Red Telephone Boxes, Big Ben And More

Image oif red telephone box and Big Ben at sunrise

The Victoria Embankment yields plenty more sunrise secrets, but they are only revealed in the winter months. You don’t see the sunrise work its magic there at other times of year because the leaves on the trees block all the light.

There is a pair of perfect red K6 telephone boxes on Victoria Embankment, around halfway between the entrance to Westminster tube station and the viewpoint for the London Eye described above.

In winter the early sunlight reaches the phone boxes and the Big Ben clock tower of the Houses of Parliament. The low light at this time of year can be breathtaking, and it’s surprising how rarely this scene is photographed.

It’s a wonderful sunrise in London seldom seen yet in one of the most obvious places to look.

And that’s not quite all. The famous statue of ancient British Queen Boadicea and her chariot stands on the corner of Victoria Embankment and Westminster Bridge, and looks fantastic in the early winter morning light with Big Ben in the background. You don’t always need to look towards the sun to get the best sunrise shots.

When to See this Sunrise : November to early March

Getting there: again via Westminster Tube, a 2-3 minute walk from the red phone boxes

Image of Big Ben and red telephone boxes at sunrise London England UK

3 . Albert Embankment

The northern section of the Albert Embankment is on the south bank of the river, across Westminster Bridge from the Victoria Embankment, directly facing the Houses of Parliament.

This walkway is a superb location for sunrise and sunset in London. At sunrise, it’s all about the rich low morning light on the Palace of Westminster, always a magnificent sight. One time we photographed there we even chanced upon a near-perfect reflection – it was a pity about the one small section of scaffolding, but we can’t have everything!

For this London sunrise shot, you don’t need to venture far along the Embankment from Westminster Bridge.

When to see this sunrise: Winter light is best, but early light at other times of year could also yield some amazing results.

Getting there: Waterloo (Northern, Bakerloo and Jubilee lines), Lambeth North (Bakerloo) and Westminster tube stations are all within a 5-10 minute walk

4 . Trafalgar Square London

Image of lion statue on Trafalgar Square and Big Ben or Elizabeth Tower Houses of Parliament London England UK

Despite being surrounded by buildings, there are plenty of London landmarks to make a Trafalgar Square sunrise well worth the early start.

In the longer days of spring and summer the sky sometimes glows red behind the elegant spire of St Martin in the Fields, one of the finest churches in London , which overlooks the north-east corner of the Square.

It’s worth staying around for the early sunlight, as its warm tones make Nelson’s Column, the National Gallery and Landseer’s lions look the best they will all day.

Best time for this sunrise in London: Summertime – if you don’t make the sunrise itself, get there for the wonderful rich early light

Gett ing there: Charing Cross Tube or a multitude of buses

Sunrise In London – West London

1. richmond park sunrise.

Richmond Park, on the southwestern outskirts of the city, is a favourite sunrise in London location among photographers for miles around.

Don´t expect wide-open vistas here – this is all about the wildlife. Autumn – October and November – is rutting season for the local wild deer, and at this time of year early morning mists often from in the forests where they roam.

I’ve only visited Richmond Park in the daytime, so haven´t experienced a Richmond Park sunrise myself, though several photographer friends have done so.

Picture the scene – a rutting stag, endowed with impressive antlers, silhouetted against the rising sun and mist, bellows to mark his territory.  You won’t find another London sunrise quite like this one.

We found plenty of deer along Queens Road, which runs north-south through the west of the Park. they were roaming in and out of the wooded area along the road between Pembroke Lodge and Ham Gate Avenue. This area is a good place to start.

Sunrise in London FAQ

What time is golden hour in the uk.

Golden hour is the hour or so after sunrise, when the light is at its lowest and best, and sunrise times vary depending on the time of year. The longest day of the year is the summer solstice, June 21st, when the sun rises at 4.43 am BST (British Summer Time), so the golden hour that day is over by 6.00 am. The shortest day of the year, the winter solstice, is December 21st, when the sun rises at 7.58 am GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), so the golden hour is until around 9.00 am. Another UK sunrise time to be aware of is the autumn equinox, around 22nd September, when the sun rises around 6.45 am BST.

What is 30 minutes before sunrise called ?

This period is called the blue hour, when if the weather is clear the sky is blue before the sunrise colours develop. The same term is used to describe the half hour between dusk and twilight when the sky is a deep blue.

How long is the longest day in London ?

The longest day of the year in London, June 21st, begins with sunrise at 4.43 am and ends with sunset at 9.21 pm. That’s 16 hours and 38 minutes of daylight.

What time is blue hour London ?

Blue hour in London is the 30-60 minutes before sunrise and after sunset on any given day. So if the sun rises at 7.00 am and sets at 7.00 pm, the blue hour will be 6.00 to 7.00 am and then from 7.00 to 8.00 pm. Photographer’s tip: always arrive over an hour early before sunrise, as that’s when the sky is often at its best.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

This £25 London tour is officially better than ‘life-changing’ bucket list attraction

Visitors to London are spoilt for choice when finding fun stuff to see and do, whether it’s a walk through Hyde Park or a visit to one of our incredible museums .

But one activity has beaten some extremely stiff competition to be named one of the best tourist attractions – not just in the capital or the UK, but across the globe.

Review site Tripadvisor recently released the winners its 2024 Travellers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best awards experiences, and Britain’s reputation as an in-demand destination is firmly intact with 11 UK entries featured in various lists.

Our reputation as a nation who loves a trip to the boozer is also going nowhere, as Blighty was represented in the category of ‘top experiences’ by a good old-fashioned pub tour.

With a seriously impressive 5/5 score, the Small-Group Historical Pub Walking Tour of London came in 19th in the ranking, which takes into account the the quality and quantity of reviews posted on Tripadvisor over a one-year period.

To put this into perspective, the activity finished above Juneau Wildlife Whale Watching in Alaska – something described by user Chuckr684 as ‘life-changing’ – as well as the gorgeous Cappadocia Balloon Rides in Goreme, Turkey.

Breaching Humpback Whale, Alaska

The UK is known for its pub culture, but this historical tour of the capital leaves guests feeling especially satisfied according to the ratings; it’s recommended by 99% of travellers who gave it a score of four or higher.

According to its official description, the tour gives visitors ‘a local’s perspective of London’ in small groups for half a day. There’s also an opportunity to try a range of local brews, see hotspots like St Paul’s Cathedral, Fleet Street, Prince Henry’s Room and Covent Garden, and hear stories over a pint for £25 per adult (although drinks must be purchased at your own expense).

One US-based reviewer, Ctcurry23, gushed, ‘Only take this tour if you want a perfect afternoon in London,’ while MelissapX1299RI shared: ‘We had the most amazing day with our guide, and I highly recommend this tour for anyone looking for some history and fun!’

Experiences weren’t the only category where the UK shone either.

Alton Towers in Staffordshire finished 8th and The Milky Way Adventure Park in Clovelly, Devon, was 12th in the ‘amusement and water parks’ worldwide list, followed by Drayton Manor in Tamworth, Staffordshire, in 20th place.

Although we don’t have the best reputation when it comes to cuisine, Scotland ensured we still garnered props in the ‘food and drink’ field. Edinburgh’s The Chocolatarium Chocolate Tour Experience finished in 4th position, above a local tapas and wine rooftop experience in Madrid and a Florence pasta class at a Tuscan Farm .

Another in which we performed well was ‘water sports’, which included London’s High-Speed River Speedboat (10th) and the Whitewater Rafting Adventure in Llangollen (20th).
