The Scoop: What to Know About Tauck Tours
Here's how to decide if tauck is the right fit for you..
The Scoop: What to Know About Trafalgar Tours
For almost 100 years, Tauck has been helping travelers see the world. The family-owned and -operated luxury tour company has enjoyed plenty of word-of-mouth recommendations from past guests (and needed to do minimal advertising as a result), and many tour participants become repeat clients who often self-identify as “Tauckies”.
TOP TOURS: 14 Best Companies for Guided Tours
A frequent travel industry award winner , Tauck offers travelers exclusive and behind-the-scenes, authentic experiences in the places it visits.
TourScoop Takeaways: Tauck
- Continents covered: 7
- Tour size range: Typical land tours have about 40 guests. River cruises range from 84 to 130 passengers. The company is working to increase its small-group offerings and will offer about 75 small-group land journeys around the world in the coming years, with most of those departures averaging 24 travelers, and many of Tauck’s African safaris featuring as few as 18 guests.
- Tour types: Land tours, safaris, small-group tours, European river cruises, small-ship cruises, and family travel tours
Credibility Check
Tauck is a member of the United States Tour Operators Association and the European Tourism Association . The company has racked up numerous awards and accolades over the years, including appearances on Travel + Leisure ’s World’s Best Awards in each of the last 26 years and recognition as “Best Tour Operator” in Travel Weekly ’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards 25 times (in multiple categories) since 2003. More than half of its clients are returning Tauck travelers each year.
Tour Destinations
Tauck tours travel to more than 100 destinations in more than 70 countries on all seven continents. New tours include six new river cruises in Europe, a safari in Namibia , an exploration of Tuscany, Cinque Terre and the Portofino Coast , and two journeys in North America—one in the American West and one in the Canadian Rockies —that each include a two-day rail journey.
Tauck offers land tours , safaris , small-group tours , European river cruises , and small ship cruises . Its Tauck Bridges collection of family travel tours and cruises has been around for 25 years.
MULTI-GEN ADVENTURES: 10 Best Travel Companies for Family Tours
When browsing tours on Tauck’s website, travelers can filter options by departure date, tour type, and destination. Tour descriptions include detailed itineraries, information about accommodations, reviews from past travelers, and information on what to pack and mobility requirements for the tour.
Tour Guides
Tour guides—referred to as Tauck Directors by the company—average 10 years of service. The company offers a generous compensation package that helps it attract top-tier candidates who remain loyal to the company and develop a high level of destination expertise over their tenures. Guides come from 41 countries, collectively speak a total of 52 languages, and have diverse backgrounds and past work experience (including a former priest, former college professors, and classical musicians).
Inclusions/Extras
Tauck tours include almost everything but airfare. Tauck land journeys include all gratuities (except Tauck Director gratuities), all taxes and fees, all sightseeing and entertainment, most meals, and airport transfers. In some stops, a lunch or dinner may not be included to allow guests to explore the destination at their own pace.
Tauck European river cruises and small-ship ocean cruises include all shore excursions, all gratuities, all taxes and fees, all onboard beverages (adult and otherwise, in most cases), most meals, all sightseeing and entertainment, and airport transfers. Many cruises also include either a pre-cruise or post-cruise hotel stay (or both) accompanied by Tauck-guided sightseeing guides.
CIAO ITALIA: 10 Exceptional Italy Tours
Typical Travelers
Many of the company’s travelers tend to be in their 50s and older. Family groups on Tauck Bridges trips tend to fall into one of three categories: conventional family groups (parents traveling with young children), grandparents traveling with grandchildren, or multigenerational groups including grandparents, their adult children, and their grandchildren.
Communication
Tauck communicates with guests throughout the entire process, from booking to pre- and post-departure. Guests receive their personal travel documents via email 60 days prior to departure for cruises and 30 days prior to departure for land journeys.
COMFORT ALL DAY: How to Choose the Best Shoes for Travel
Documents include information such as necessary pre-trip requirements, packing suggestions, information on local currency and weather, emergency contact information, and a day-by-day itinerary. The company also offers travel protection plans for extra peace of mind.
Private Options
Tauck offers private group departures with a minimum of 10 guests that work well for family reunions or milestone celebrations.
Sustainability Efforts
Tauck has focused on the cultural preservation side of sustainable travel through efforts like a guest-volunteer program in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, and support of nonprofit Tourism Cares .
As European river cruising has become a larger part of the company’s business, Tauck has worked in partnership with Scylla (which owns and operates Tauck’s fleet of European riverboats) on a number of initiatives, including using cleaner-burning GTL fuel on riverboats when available, and limiting single-use plastics.
Health and Safety Practices
The company’s small-ship ocean cruises have a physician aboard each departure. European river cruises do not, but the boats are never far from shore and local medical facilities.
Tauck stays in constant communication with its on-the-ground partners in the regions where it travels and monitors all U.S. government-issued travel advisories and media reports. Its cross-departmental Global Response Team can quickly respond to any situation 24 hours a day.

Wonderful trip. Great leader and fun people in our group. To be able to stay within the national parks is bonus.
First time Tuack Tour, Essence of Japan. It will be my last. Spent more than 45k and they handled flight booking. They booked international layover outbound with 40 min window. Not surprisingly my bags, clothes and medicine didn't arrive for 30 hours. They acknowledged their fault in email but Guest Relations tone deaf. They offered small cash refund and future credit on next tour. Won't be a "next tour ". It was once a great brand but they have lost their feel for customer retention. If you use them, book your own travel and save money and aggravation.
We just returned from our first Tauck tour to England, Scotland and Wales and cannot say enough about what a terrific trip it was. Tauck is a first-class operation; handles virtually every detail and makes it a fun, enlightening, unforgettable experience. Most of the folks on our tour were big-time Tauck repeat customers and I can see why. I wasn't sure I was cut out for a group tour but now I'm starting to think about which Tauck tour we'll take next.
I just spoke with customer service. The most horrible service ever. I have never been on a cruise nor do I have any desire. Yet I continue to receive junk mail on a regular basis. I have called to have my name removed several time and it does not good. Customer Service has no follow through. I would never recommend this company as they are killing our planet by sending junk mail daily. DID YOU KNOW: * 5.6 million tons of catalogs and other direct mail advertisements end up in U.S. landfills annually. * 44 percent of junk mail is thrown away unopened, but only half that much junk mail is recycled. * The average American household receives 848 pieces of junk mail, which equals 1.5 trees every year and more than 100 million trees for all U.S. households combined. That's the equivalent of deforesting all of Rocky Mountain National Park every four months. * Largely due to deforestation, junk mail manufacturing creates as much greenhouse gas emissions annually as 3.7 million cars.
Tauck is not what it used to be.Luxury river cruise from Lyon to Provence was a disappointment. Try a different luxury cruise line for your river cruises
We have taken 4 trips with this company in the past 7 years. They have meet or exceeded our expectations on all 4 trips. We have made lasting friends on a couple of these trips. In sharing the travel with then strangers, in multiple instances we have never laughed so hard. Good guides, and well balanced itineraries.
Last tour was a phenomenal disappointment. And when I called to provide feedback the woman wasn't at all interested in doing anything to rectify my complaint. Being on a bus for over 4 hours without stopping for a restroom break is UNACCEPTABLE. In Germany it's mandatory for them to stop every 2 hours to give the driver a 30 minute break which wasn't done. Tour director was totally unplugged and lacked minimal communication with guests. other tour directors except 1, were rude and unprofessional to us. Many had complaints about one woman in particular. Yet when I provided feedback to Tauck the woman wasn't at all interested in my complaint. High prices and sub-par service to boot. My money will find a better company. Cannot in good conscience recommend Tauck.
After reading recent reviews, as a virgin cruiser, I would not book this operator if they were the last cruise on earth. Horrific reviews! Save your time reading them all, I already did. You've been warned.
Sad to see a once good tour company stumble and fall into mediocrity. That's Tauck post-Covid. My May 2023 tour of Normandy, Brittany and the Loire Valley was done on the cheap by Tauck, yet cost me thousands of dollars extra as a solo traveler on a special small-group tour. 5-star hotels switched to 3 and 4 (without any compensation or explanation)... many more meals "on your own"... lots of "self-guided" tours of museums and chateaux and castles we knew nothing about... airline quality "rubber chicken" dinners, not in hotel restaurants, but in sad and isolated business convention spaces... poorly-trained newer Tour Directors (like the one on this tour) with limited experience traveling outside her tiny Canadian village or dealing with people from diverse backgrounds. She even confessed that this was a second gig job that took her away from her own business back home! You get what Tauck pays for, but unfortunately, not what YOU pay for. Speaking to a "Guest Relations" agent was comically pointless. She tried to make everything my fault, which I now understand is par for the course with the "new" post-Covid Tauck. Please reconsider spending huge amounts of your hard-earned money on a tour company that has lost its way and no longer delivers.
Our recent trip to South Africa with Tauck was cut short by someone on the trip contracting COVID . The person had symptoms for several days and then used her own home test which came back positive . Two doctors traveling with her said clinical symptoms plus positive home test is 99.9 % accurate. The person with COVID called the tour director who asked the doctors why they were so concerned about COVID Tour director then went and go a local bushman paramedic who administered two COVID tests which came back negative ( see any Mexican resorts during the pandemic) She did not warn anyone on the trip that there risk for COVID was now extremely high and did not caution the group about taking extra precautions to keep everyone safe In fact the tour director lied and said COVID tests were negative and probably just a flu As expected one day later once arriving in a larger city the COVID PCR came back positive More people began getting sick with cough and other symptoms Yet still no word from the tour director We left the group since my wife is immunosuppressed and lost faith in Tauck keeping their guests safe Recommend 1 if you have US doctors in a group - use them in consultation with tauck docs based in the USA 2. If US doctors tell the tour director she is not following US medical standards then doctors should be on call from tauck to discuss 3. The level of quality tauck uses for medical personnel in third world countries is highly suspect We thought Tauck would protect us in any of our exotic travels. What we learned is Tauck is only protecting themselves

About Booking This Tour
Travel Documents
If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Germany and The Netherlands. You are not required to obtain a visa to enter any of the countries visited for the short duration of this tour.
If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands to determine what travel documentation is required.
International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the riverboat, your passport will be held by the purser temporarily to make copies.
Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.
We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.
To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.
Note Regarding Crossing Borders between non-Schengen Countries: In order to clear customs at the non-Schengen ports, the Reception staff will take your passport during the cruise in order to show local authorities as we pass borders. Occasionally you will need to come to the front desk to have your identify quickly crossed checked with your passport by the authorities. The process is quick and efficient and there is no need for declarations, etc.
TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Health, Safety and Mobility
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
Your riverboat is registered in Basel, Switzerland. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.
The water on board the ship is potable, and complimentary bottled water is placed in your cabin each day. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.
If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.
VACCINATIONS
If you are a resident of the U.S. , no vaccinations are currently required for travel to the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania or Bulgaria. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .
If you are a resident of another country , please contact an embassy or consulate of the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for you to visit.
While a cruise is very relaxing and the pace leisurely, to enjoy all the tour has to offer, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. There is a moderate to significant amount of walking during our excursions. Many of the Old Towns of Europe are well preserved and are designated pedestrian zones. However, the cobblestone streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and inclines are challenging to travelers who are used to more modern, flat, paved roadways and sidewalks. Mostly, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion.
Your riverboat has four decks: Diamond, Ruby, Emerald, and Sun. The elevator runs between the Diamond Deck and the Dining room, which includes stops at the Lounge and the Ruby Deck. There is no elevator access to the Emerald Deck. There is no chair lift between any of the decks.
Because you will be cruising on a river and not on the open sea, you are never far from land and, therefore, there is no doctor on board. In case of emergency we can easily dock the boat and call for an ambulance or medical assistance.
PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.
Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate service animals on any river cruise for medical and legal reasons.
SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS
The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.
On board the riverboat, smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking (including e-Cigarettes) is not permitted in any cabin, the restaurant, the lounge or any other interior space.
Reading List
We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.
AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.
Checked Luggage – General
Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).
Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.
Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.
Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.
Carry-on Luggage - General
Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.
For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.
The most favorable months for riverboat travel in Eastern Europe are in late spring and summer. During those months the temperatures range from highs of 63 to 73 º F in May (17 to 23 º C) and 71 to 83 º F (22 to 28 º C) in July. The overnight temperatures range from 45 to 50 º F (7 to 10 º C) in May and 53 to 60 º F (12 to 16 º C) in July. The temperatures increase as you travel down the Rhine and the Main to the Danube and finally the Black Sea port of Constanta.
Rainfall averages during these months range from 2.4 to 2.8 in (61 to 71 mm) in May, 2.8 to 3.6 in (71 to 91 mm) in June, and 2.5 to 3.0 in (64 to 76 mm) in July.

What To Pack
Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .
Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Many days are spent outside or in transit. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.
During evenings aboard the riverboat, dress is resort casual. Items such as slacks and collared shirts are appropriate for men. For women, slacks, a dress or a skirt and blouse are suitable. For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops or sneakers. Your journey also includes one or two special occasion dinners, where a sport coat and tie for gentlemen and a dress/pantsuit for ladies are suggested. (Your Tauck Director will advise you prior to those evenings.)
Bathrobes, slippers and hairdryers are provided in each guest room at the hotel and in each cabin on board the riverboat.
Irons and ironing boards are either located in your hotel guest room or are available immediately upon request. Ironing facilities are available on the riverboat by request to the front desk. Category 7 suites feature their own irons and ironing boards. Onboard the riverboat, valet laundry and pressing services are available; there is no dry cleaning on board.
We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the
event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the riverboat.
Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your Grand European Cruise:
- Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
- Sport jacket and optional tie for men
- Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
- A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
- Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
- Insect repellent
- Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
- Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
- Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
- Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
- Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
- Daypack for camera equipment
- Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
- Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

Tauck River Cruise Update for 2025. What’s New?
During 2025, Tauck will introduce a new 14-night “ Romantic Capitals: Prague to Paris ” river cruise itinerary. If you’re interested in an enticing new Tauck river cruise, this is a great one to consider.
Here’s how the journey will flow. Guests will start in Prague, the Czech Republic , with two nights at the Fairmont Golden Prague Hotel . Next up is a nine-day, luxurious, pampering river cruise.
Boarding either the 130-passenger Savor or sister vessel Joy, Tauck’s guests will sail from Regensburg, Germany, to Trier, Germany. This itinerary will travel the Rhine, Main and Moselle rivers as well as the Rhine-Main Canal.
Guests will then disembark and travel overland to Luxembourg. There, they’ll enjoy a guided walking tour of Luxembourg City.
Then they’ll board a train to Paris . The trip concludes in “The City of Light” with a two-night stay at the L’Hotel du Collectionneur, considered an Art Deco masterpiece.
(Shown in the photo above is Schlosshotel Kronberg where Tauck’s guests will enjoy a private reception and dinner. Photo by Tauck.)
Tauck River Cruise: New Itinerary Highlights
During this vacation, travelers will sail on a vessel accommodating just 130 guests, compared to the 150 or up to 190 passengers carried by other European river vessels of a similar size.
In addition, Tauck’s guests will enjoy enriching activities and experiences. For instance, here are a few:
- Private evening ashore in Germany with a reception and dinner at Schlosshotel Kronberg.
- Visit to t he legendary Nurburgring motorsports complex in Germany.
- Scenic, private boating excursion on the Seine River.
- Underground walking tour of historic Prague.
Fortunately, travelers will have great flexibility in picking a departure date. Tauck will offer 10 departures of this new “ Romantic Capitals: Prague to Paris ” river cruise itinerary from April through October of next year.
At press time, fares started at $9,790 per person, double occupancy, plus airfare. Talk with your personal travel planner about accommodations and timing that’s best for you to travel.
Tauck River Cruise: Esprit Redeployed
So, what else is new for Tauck on European rivers? In addition to the new itinerary outlined above, Tauck also said this week that it will redeploy its intimate, 98-passenger Esprit riverboat to France’s River Seine.
This year, that vessel is operating on the Rhine and Danube rivers. “But Tauck believes that the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris will generate greater demand for vacations in France next year,” says Shelby Steudle , president, Pavlus Travel .
“So, the line will smartly double its capacity there,” she emphasizes. “We believe that’s a great move to help assure that loyal Tauck travelers as well as first-time Tauck guests will have more Seine River opportunities.”
In 2025, Esprit (along with Sapphire ) will operate all four of Tauck’s Seine River cruises. Here are links to those itineraries, ship features, accommodations details, pricing and other information.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Tauck Announces 2025 Cruising Plans
On Tap for Next Year: New River and Small Ship Ocean Cruises, Added Capacity on River Seine And New Travel Advisor Support
Tom Armstrong
- Media Center
WILTON, CT (May 6, 2024) Tauck has announced its 2025 plans for its river cruising and small ship ocean cruising portfolios, and the coming year promises to be a busy one with new itineraries, a boost to the company's capacity on the River Seine, and its first-ever Tauck River Academy for travel advisors. In small ship ocean cruising, Tauck will be introducing two new itineraries, "Aegean Voyage: Istanbul to Athens" and "Rome, the Amalfi Coast & Sicily." Priced from $11,990 USD* per person (double occupancy, plus airfare) the 14-day " Aegean Voyage: Istanbul to Athens " begins with an included three-night stay at the InterContinental Hotel Istanbul and an in-depth exploration of the timeless city. After embarking Windstar Cruises' 312-passenger Star Legend , guests will enjoy an eight-day cruise with ports of call in Lemnos, Mykonos, Kusadasi, Bodrum, Santorini and Itea before disembarking in Piraeus. The itinerary ends with an included two-night stay in Athens at the Grande Bretagne Hotel along with guided Tauck sightseeing in the city. Highlights of the two-week journey include a Tauck-exclusive dinner with live music under the stars in ancient Ephesus, guided sightseeing in Athens including the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum, a guided visit to the archaeological site of Delphi (a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating to the 8th century BC), a cruise along the Bosphorus in Istanbul, and a choice of excursions in Lemnos, a hidden gem of the Aegean. Tauck will operate six departures of the new itinerary in 2025, in April, September and October. The new 12-day " Rome, the Amalfi Coast & Sicily " (from $11,990 USD* per person, double occupancy, plus airfare) begins in Rome with an included two-night hotel stay highlighted by Tauck-guided sightseeing. A seven-day cruise aboard an elegant Ponant Explorer class ship (either Le Dumont d'Urville or Le Bougainville ) follows, with shore excursions at Amalfi, Trapani, Palermo, Taormina, Siracusa and Gozo. After disembarking in Valletta, Malta, guests will enjoy an included two-night hotel stay in the city complete with Tauck sightseeing. Memorable insider experiences along the way include a choice of visits to privately owned palaces in Palermo and a tour of the Ggantija Temples. Located on the island of Gozo, the temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site pre-dating the Egyptian pyramids. Other highlights include an optional visit to Schiavi Castle (a private villa featured prominently in The Godfather ), and an exclusive farewell dinner in Valletta at the historic La Sacra Infermeria, once the hospital of the Order of the Knight's of St. John. Tauck will operate six departures of "Rome, the Amalfi Coast & Sicily" in May, June, September and October of 2025. Included in the price of both new cruises are all shore excursions, gratuities to Tauck Directors, ship staff and local guides, onboard alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (including house wines and spirits), airport transfers, luggage handling and more. In all, Tauck will operate 20 small ship ocean cruise itineraries next year aboard 18 vessels in Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia and Antarctica. A NEW RIVER ITINERARY, MORE SEINE CAPACITY AND… On the rivers of Europe, Tauck will be introducing a new-for-2025 itinerary " Romantic Capitals: Paris to Prague " (from $9,790 USD** per person, plus airfare). Itinerary highlights include a private evening with a reception and dinner at Schlosshotel Kronberg, a visit to the legendary Nürburgring race track, a private boating excursion on the Seine, and an underground walking tour of Prague. Tauck will offer 10 departures of "Romantic Capitals: Paris to Prague" from April through October of next year with sailings aboard its ms Savor and ms Joy riverboats. Next year will also see the redeployment of Tauck's 110-meter ms Esprit riverboat to the River Seine, following its 2024 operating season along the Rhine and Danube rivers. The move will double Tauck's capacity on the Seine, and it comes ahead of an anticipated increase in bookings to France following the Summer Olympic Games in Paris later this year. …THE FIRST-EVER TAUCK RIVER ACADEMY FOR TRAVEL ADVISORS Tauck's 2025 river cruising plans are also set to include the company's first-ever Tauck River Academy training event for travel advisors, which will take place during the company's October 6, 2025 sailing of its 10-day " Three Rivers: Danube, Main & Rhine " itinerary aboard its ms Joy riverboat. The Tauck River Academy was announced last month at ASTA's River Cruise Expo, generating more than 500 inquiries and quickly reaching capacity. As at past Tauck Academies , attendees will participate in a variety of educational modules combined with numerous opportunities to experience some of the unique activities and cultural discoveries that Tauck builds into its journeys. Graduates will earn the distinction of being Tauck-Certified advisors and enjoy access to a range of unique benefits. Additional River Academies are planned for future dates.
