A year of the Eras Tour: A look back at Taylor Swift's record-breaking show

taylor swift anti hero tour

One year ago, the crowd in Glendale, Arizona, erupted into a massive cheer in State Farm Stadium when Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me" began playing and the backdrop screen transitioned to a countdown clock starting at 2:24.

None of the Swifties who traveled from all over the state of Arizona and the nation, dressed to the nines as one of her 10 eras, knew the tour would be three-plus hours. The fan screaming next to me from Pennsylvania who bought a ticket on StubHub.com for about $400 didn't know that we would go era-by-era through a 44-song track list. I don't think the singer, herself, knew when she hid inside a cleaning cart wheeled backstage, that her show would lead to a billion-dollar enterprise, Time magazine person of the year and an inundation of friendship bracelets. I didn't know the behemoth success following the Eras Tour star would send me packing from Phoenix to Nashville, Tennessee, to become the inaugural Taylor Swift reporter.

Swift's dancers flowed onto the stage through fog with pink, purple and orange parachute flaps. A compilation of songs from Swift's 10 albums — or eras — played as "it's been a long time coming" boomed into the stadium. Goosebumps covered the arms of thousands and tears cascaded down cheeks as the flaps revealed Miss Americana rising to begin her "Lover" set.

Eighty three shows later, here's a look back at the unprecedented tour that set a Guinness World Record . And fair warning, like her tour this article is an extensive rollercoaster.

Swept up in the hype, the world became Taylor Nation. Glendale, "Erazona ," was renamed "Swift City." Las Vegas lit up its arches in all 10 era colors. Arlington, Texas, dubbed one of its streets "Taylor Swift Way." Tampa, Florida, gave Swift a key to the city and invited her to be an honorary mayor. Houston renamed its venue "NRG Stadium (Taylor’s Version)."

Nashville, Tennessee, dedicated a bench in Centennial Park to the hometown singer. A Philadelphia radio station, 96.5 FM (WTDY), renamed itself Ninety-Swift-Five W-T-A-Y. Gov. Philip D. Murphy dubbed the "Taylor Swift ham, egg and cheese sandwich" the "state sandwich of New Jersey." Chicago lit up the top of Willis Tower in her album colors. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey renamed his city "Swiftie-apolis," and Santa Clara, California, Mayor Lisa Gillmor switched the city's name to "Swiftie Clara."

Internationally, fans in Brazil caught the attention of Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes and Father Omar, the rector of the Christ the Redeemer Sanctuary, who arranged to project a  "Junior Jewels" inspired T-shirt  onto the Christ the Redeemer statue. Flinders Station in Melbourne , Australia, flashed a wallpaper glaze of lights to welcome the Eras star. Singapore painted the Marina Bay Sands Resort all colors of vibrant lights.

It's a cruel summer with you

All four seasons met the fifteen dancers, four backup singers, six bandmates and hundreds of production and crew members, adding unpredictable weather to the mix. Mother Nature danced in a lightning storm to "Fearless" in Tampa and made the song "Midnight Rain" a reality in Nashville . Rain poured through the open-roofed stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, where Swift pushed puddles forming on her piano . The Swiftie fandom created its own natural phenomenon in Seattle after a seismologist registered a 2.3 magnitude earthquake on her Richter scale.

The intense heat in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, caused Swift to throw water bottles to fans and temporarily halt her show. Ana Clara Benevides Machado, 23, passed out and died of heat exhaustion. The heartbreaking news prompted changes at the Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos to allow fans access to water. Swift invited Benevides' family to her concert in São Paulo.

I want you to think of the memories made

Swift incorporated custom messages into each tour stop. At her international destinations, she welcomed fans in their custom languages. "Bienvenidos al Eras Tour," she said in Mexico City before hoisting her hands in the air. While donning either her pink or blue guitar before the title track of "Lover," she commonly announced the stadium attendance often record-breaking.

Outside of stadiums, thousands "Taylorgated," or showed up without a ticket to hear Swift's beats and dance on the concrete. Tens of thousands more logged on to watch livestreams from fans with tickets who agreed to spend concert time holding up their mobile devices in a tricep-burning position.

The number of viewers would jump before the "Champagne Problems" speech and acoustic set. To keep things fun and interesting each night, fans filled out "Swiftball" ballots guessing the singer's outfits from four "Lover" bodysuits and accompanying "The Man" jackets, three "Fearless" dresses, two "Evermore" dresses, six "Speak Now" gowns, three bedazzled "22" shirts, five "Folkore" dresses, four "1989" crop top and skirt combos, six "Midnights" T-shirt dresses, three "Midnight Rain" body suits and four "Karma" faux fur jackets. To see how many times the Eras star wore each outfit, check out the "Data Swiftie."

For fans who wanted to get alerts to watch the shows without having to calculate time changes, Swift Alert became the app for that .

Double clap, audience chants

A secret language formed between fans and Swift as new traditions popped up along the tour. The four lines fans screamed at the top of their lungs, no matter the city or country, were "cause shade never made anybody less gay" in "You Need To Calm Down," "what a shame she's f----d in the head" in "Champagne Problems," "f--- the patriarchy" in "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" and "don't call me kid, don't call me baby" in "Illicit Affairs."

Swift started every show strong with a very important question: Did her fans know the bridge to "Cruel Summer?" "Prove it!" she'd yell at some stops and the audience would, every single time, bellow, "I'm drunk in the back of the car." For "The Archer," fans printed and dispersed signs that read, "We will stay," to hold up when Swift asks, "Who would stay?"

In the "Fearless" era, fans double clapped with "13" drawn on the back of their hands in the middle of the bridge to "You Belong With Me." A trend of marriage proposals during "Love Story" picked up during the 2024 leg with partners popping the question as Swift sang, "He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring."

During "Marjorie," Swifties turned their phone flashlights on in tribute to Swift's grandma. Fans started timing the standing ovation and ear-shattering applause after "Champagne Problems." Livestreamers, like Tess Bohne , would display a clock and fans guessed if the cheers would surpass one, two or three minutes.

A snake shape slithered through the light-up braceklets handed out before the show at the start of the "Reputation" era. Fans yelled "1, 2, 3, let's go b----" before the first verse of "Delicate" as Swift counts on her fingers. Later in the song, Swift sings, "Do the girls back home touch you like I do?" and fans reply, "No, they don't." On rare occasion, Swift would let out a three-note riff during her "Don't Blame Me" belt.

After rereleasing her third album, the "Speak Now" singer added "Long Live" to the set list, bringing the total to 45 tracks. In the first verse when she croons "the crowds and stands went wild," the crowd indeed went wild.

In the "Red" era, Swift crowned a deserving fan with a black fedora during "22." They were typically children, but one adult Swiftie was crowned in Melbourne . Dancer Kameron Saunders had the only speaking line on the tour besides Swift during her song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." He said "like ever" at the American shows, but when the tour went international, he switched up the phrase each night. And yes, we track that. Swift knew all too well each crowd had "10 minutes to spare," and she played her longest song, in total, for about 14 hours.

She was only tied to the "Invisible String" for five shows and traded the opening "Folklore" era number to "The 1" in Arlington, before news of her split from actor Joe Alwyn . She brought "Invisible String" back for one night in Nashville because the Tennessee capital is home to Centennial Park. Nashvillians also noticed that Swift switched a note during "The 1" lyric "you meet a woman on the internet and take her home." She kept the key change for every succeeding show.

Right before the first lyric of "Style" during the "1989" set, fans began a tradition of saying, "What time is it?" to which the singer replied, "Midnight, you come and pick me up." In Sydney, Australia, a "Blank Space" chant from the 1989 World Tour was reborn and repeated in Singapore. Taylor Nation, Swift's marketing team, tweeted that it hopes fans at every tour stop going forward shout their city. In Philadelphia, a "Bad Blood" remix originated when Swift noticed a security guard hassling a fan . "She's fine. She wasn't doing anything. Hey! Stop! Hey, stop!" became the cool thing to say after, "It's so sad to think about the good times, you and I." Fans also incorporated a Kendrick Lamar line from the "Bad Blood" remix: "You forgive, you forget, but you never let it go."

And then came the surprise set . (More on her collaborators and announcements below.) Each night, Swift performed one song on the guitar and one on the piano that she hadn't yet performed on the tour. That is until 2024, when she added mashups and threw out her rule of never repeating songs. At the end of the set, she swan dives into a hole in the stage. Fans later caught a red light that turned green to signal it was safe to jump.

After meeting her at "Midnights," fans sang Jack Antonoff's version of "Anti-Hero." When Swift sings "tale as old as time," the crowd chimes in, "Taylor, you'll be fine." Tyler Conroy made a viral video of him screaming , "Where you going Taylor?" during "Bejeweled" before she sings, "I'm going out tonight," and the trend caught on like a blaze ripping through the Lover house. Finally, after Swift changed the lyrics to, "Karma is the guy on the Chiefs," in Argentina with her boyfriend Travis Kelce in the crowd, that became the standard for fans. She has only sang it that way four times, when he was in attendance in Buenos Aires, Sydney and Singapore.

If you would direct your attention to the back screen

In addition to boosting economies everywhere she went, Swift created an abundance of news. She announced "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" in Nashville. She announced a new version of "Midnights" and premiered the "Karma (Remix)" music video featuring Ice Spice as the upstart rapper joined Swift in East Rutherford, New Jersey. She released "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" right before her Kansas City, Missouri, stop and then debuted the "I Can See You" music video starring Taylor Lautner and Joey King who were at the show. Lautner backflipped on the catwalk.

It might have seemed strange that Swift ended the American leg of her tour on a Wednesday in Los Angeles, but not to the eagle-eyed Swiftie who realized the date was 8/9. That's the day she announced the rerecording of her fifth album, "1989 (Taylor's Version)." The album came out during her break before her Argentina tour dates. It topped the Billboard charts and allowed her to bypass Elvis for the most weeks with an album at No. 1.

Then, she announced her 11th album, "The Tortured Poets Department," at the Grammys after winning her 13th career award. At her tour stops in Melbourne, Sydney and Singapore, she revealed there were four total versions of "Tortured Poets" and told fans they would get a different bonus track on each one : "The Manuscript," "The Bolter," "The Albatross" and "The Black Dog."

Welcome to the acoustic set

One of the most anticipated portions of an Eras Tour show is the acoustic set. At most of the concerts, she only spoke before the guitar song. In rare instances, she tested the microphone before the piano song and made an announcement.

Occasionally she invited collaborators to join her onstage. Marcus Mumford surprised fans in Las Vegas to play "Cowboy Like Me." Her co-producer and close friend Aaron Dessner from The National joined her six times on stage, in Tampa (twice), Nashville, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Santa Clara. Jack Antonoff came out to play "Getaway Car" in New Jersey. Maren Morris did a "You All Over Me" duet in Chicago. When their opening acts were canceled for weather, Gracie Abrams performed "I Miss You, I'm Sorry" and Sabrina Carpenter sang a dyad mashup of "White Horse" and "Coney Island."

Some of the surprise songs came with hidden messages. Fans speculated she sang "Bigger Than The Whole Sky" as an ode to a fan who died , "End Game" to Travis Kelce watching her show from the VIP tent and "Gold Rush" as a congratulations to Jason Kelce for retiring. She has performed "You're On Your Own Kid" five times, in Tampa, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Tokyo and Singapore.

And he never thinks of me, except when I'm on TV

To close out the first year of the Eras Tour, Swift released the third film version of her concert to streaming service Disney+. This version included "Cardigan" and four acoustic songs: "Maroon," "Death By A Thousand Cuts," "You Are In Love" and "I Can See You."

The second version came out on Swift's birthday, Dec. 13. Fans could rent it for 48 hours at a price of $19.89, and it included "The Archer," "Wildest Dreams" and "Long Live" cut from the original movie.

The original movie was released Oct. 13, in the middle of the Hollywood strikes. Swift did what studios and streaming services were unable to: make a deal with SAG-AFTRA. She worked with the unions and was able to market and show her movie how she saw fit. The film made more than $250 million globally and got her nominated for a Golden Globe award .

Would you be interested in one more song?

If you're still with me on this walk down Eras Tour Lane, it's important to make one final note before the tour resumes in Paris in May. Before her magnum opus took off higher than the "Bad Blood" flames, Swift chose "Mirrorball" and "Tim McGraw" to be her very first surprise songs. She ended year one with the same two songs, but flipped the instruments she played them on in a full-circle moment.

Her new album will come out April 19 and the full Eras Tour is streaming on Disney+, which begs the question: What her show will look like come Paris? She has a two-month break before 69 shows scheduled for Europe and North America. She also has two rerecords left to release: "Reputation (Taylor's Version)" and her self-titled debut album.

If there's one thing any Swiftie knows, it's Taylor Swift's ability to make news and create lasting memories through her record-shattering tour. What a first year; on to year two!

Until now completely circumspect about any of the content or even tone of her forthcoming album, “ Midnights ,” Taylor Swift revealed the theme of one of the collection’s new tunes, “Anti-Hero,” describing it as “a real guided tour throughout all the things that I tend to hate about myself.”

Swift also said that she “struggle(s) a lot with the idea that my life has become unmanageably sized… I struggle with the idea of not feeling like a person.”

So, yeah, I like ‘Anti-Hero’ a lot because I think it’s really honest.”

The other song titles Swift has revealed so far are “Maroon” (track 2), “Midnight Rain” (track 6), “Question…?” (track 7), “Vigilante Shit” (track 8) and “Mastermind” (closing track 13). Beyond the basic 13 songs, a Target deluxe edition will include a 14th original song, along with two remixes.

Little else has been revealed about “Midnights,” either, apart from the cover art, and a making-of video that suggests Jack Antonoff may be the sole co-producer. The photography, partial song title list and promise of Antonoff’s thorough participation would seem to indicate a move back toward pop arrangements and away from the folky leanings of the nearly two-year-old “Evermore,” which had Aaron Dessner as its primary co-writer-producer, but not necessarily a move away from the reflective attitude of that album and “Folklore.” But for now it all remains — as one of the new titles says — a “Question…?”

Taylor Swift performs 'Anti-Hero' live for the first time in surprise appearance at the 1975's concert

She also covered the band's hit "The City."

taylor swift anti hero tour

Taylor Swift should not be left to her own devices — after all, she may just show up at a concert unexpectedly and perform.

Such is what happened on Thursday in London at The O2, where fans were gathered for the 1975's concert. According to videos shared by onlookers, Swift showed up unannounced onstage to give the first live performance of "Anti-Hero" from her latest album Midnights . Swift also treated the crowd to a rendition of the 1975's "The City."

The surprising cameo caps off a few months of mutual public admiration between Swift and the English synth-pop band. In November, the 1975's Matty Healy said in an interview that Swift had heard their new record, Being Funny In a Foreign Language , before its release. (Frequent Swift collaborator and Midnights producer Jack Antonoff also produced the 1975's album).

When asked if Swift returned the favor, Healy said that in fact, he and his bandmates had worked a bit on Swift's album, but whatever they made didn't make the final cut.

"We actually worked a bit on that but then the version of it never came out," the star said in an interview with KROQ's Klein/Ally Show for Audacy's DTS Sound Space . Though he didn't specify what they worked on or why it didn't work out, he did clarify, "it was for reasons that are not to be criticized" and he praised Swift, calling her "amazing."

Just days after the Oct. 21 release of her 10th studio album, Midnights , Swift shattered streaming and sales records left and right, including becoming the first artist in history to claim all top 10 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 in a single frame. The album, which sees the singer reminisce on sleepless nights throughout her life, marked both a return to pop and a return to more personal subject matter for Swift.

In addition to surprising fans at concerts, Swift is currently hard at work prepping for her massive Eras Tour , which kicks off in Glendale, Ariz. on March 17.

Taylor Swift's bad reputation for CO2 emissions

“Look what you made me do... (Ooh!)” - Taylor Swift; Reputation

Last year Swift’s prolific private jet use was brought into focus, writes Thomas Bywater .

Sustainability marketing firm Yard accused two private jets owned by Taylor Swift of generating 8293.54 tonnes in carbon emissions in six months. With flight records showing 170 journeys taken between January and July 2022, it was the largest carbon footprint of a list of celebrities named by the report.

Swift’s two Dassault Falcon jets have clocked up an additional 166 hours of flight time since the US tour began. However, this pales in comparison to the combined emissions of fans travelling to Eras shows.

Many of the audience are expected to travel over 2700km.

The Eras Tour’s carbon emissions appear to reinforce the US pop singer’s position as the climate “Anti-Hero”.

What does 5.3 million tickets look like?

News that there would be no New Zealand or Western Australia dates for the all-stadium tour was met with dismay in June. Not only because of how difficult tickets were to come by, but because Kiwis would then have to schlep their way to Melbourne or Sydney. The only people who seemed thrilled by the idea were airlines and hospitality providers.

Air New Zealand added 2000 additional seats across the Tasman specifically for demand from showgoers.

“We saw a surge in demand for the final day of our Tasman sale with more than 3500 Kiwis booking flights to coincide with concert dates,” said the airline’s chief customer and sales officer, Leanne Geraghty.

Qantas added 16 flights across the ditch, roughly 4800 seats, on top of 11,000 domestic fares to get travellers to shows in Victoria and New South Wales.

While many of these new seats come from upweighting aircraft from Boeing 737s to bigger A330s, there are many flights that would not have happened without the Taylor travel boom. The Aussie airline said it had added 60 new flights in February to cope with a 1500 per cent increase in demand. Planes that would not have taken off if it weren’t for the Eras Tour.

There are 9256 tonnes of additional carbon from additional return airfares from New Zealand alone.

If Taylor will not come to New Zealand, the Kiwis will come to Taylor.

But what’s the morality of hosting a world tour, and can musicians tour the globe without it costing the earth?

27 venues, 19 countries...

Singapore, australia see taylor swift travel boom.

Following the release of dates in Australia, fans lucky enough to secure tickets were faced with hotel prices at two and a half times the standard rate. Online fan forums were awash with claims that accommodation in the city had spiked to $400-$500 a night.

“The problem is a lot of people will HAVE to fly,” says concert-goer Ash Louise.

She was planning travel from Brisbane having secured a ticket in Melbourne. An 18-hour drive is not practical, especially if she has to be back at work for Monday.

It’s not only in Australasia that this effect is being seen, but across the Pacific.

Southeast Asia might be the region that has seen the largest uptick in Taylor-related air travel. Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines were similarly snubbed for Eras Tour dates, despite enormous demand. Instead, six dates were added to the Singapore National Stadium. It is the longest run of shows anywhere on the tour circuit.

Some 22 million users registered for access to the 330,000 available tickets during the July 7 general sale.

With six shows between March 2 and 9 next year, the city state has become the centre of a pop music pilgrimage. Airfares, accommodation and travel costs have skyrocketed.

There has been a huge surge in travel bookings from the Philippines, with many making the 2400km journey from Manila. Airfares for the route on Singapore Airlines between February 29 and March 8 were already double the cost of the prior month.

The Philippines has a fanatical fan base of Taylor Swift music, second only to the US. According to Spotify streaming data, the superstar has had 230 chart appearances there, with nine number 1 hit singles.

One Taylor Swift tragic told the Straits Times he had spent $3600 for flights and accommodation after securing tickets.

“I’ve never been to Singapore, but [I’d do] anything to see Taylor Swift,” he said.

Although Singapore Airlines could not divulge whether they were considering adding additional services, a spokesperson for the airline told the Herald it is standard practice to add more flights in the face of prevailing demand.

“While we’re unable to provide specific figures on year-on-year trends on bookings into Singapore due to commercial sensitivities, we have seen continued strong demand in our forward bookings into 2024, including through March.”

Other airlines including Malaysian Airlines and Jetstar were already upping services to the city on the straits, from Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta. While much of this follows seasonal demand, the cost of flights over the week of Swift’s tours has soared by between 50 and 130 per cent.

A representative for Taylor Swift’s management had previously said that the production was offsetting the show’s carbon emissions.

“Before the tour kicked off in March of 2023, Taylor purchased more than double the carbon credits needed to offset all tour travel,” a spokesperson told Insider and JetSpy in August.

However, the Herald could not obtain an exact tonnage of offsets from the tour management nor information on whether the calculations included audience travel or just travel undertaken by the two Dassault jets, N621MM and N898TS.

In either case, offsetting travel is not the same as reducing travel emissions.

As other touring production companies have shown, carbon credits are one tool for addressing sustainability, but it is always preferable to reduce overall travel rather than offset fuel that needn’t be burned.

The moral dilemma of music touring

We are in a golden age for blockbuster shows and live performances. The pyrotechnics are brighter, the uniforms larger, the music louder.

Given the slump in recording artists’ earnings from around $1.50 per record to about $0.003 to $0.005 for an online stream, touring has become ever more important. It’s not surprising that eight of the 10 largest-grossing tours of all time took place in the past decade. On that league table, the Eras Tour already ranks at number 2, following Swift’s US shows.

With tickets to Swift’s Australian shows costing between $86 and $412 - and each show being attended by more concert-goers than most artists see album sales in a year - the stadium tour is the new focal point for pop stars on the make.

This renewed focus on travel and touring also comes at a time when artists are facing greater scrutiny for carbon credentials.

Billboard and logistics trade magazine Commercial Truck Trader estimated the Eras Tour relied on between 50 and 90 semi-trucks to drive between Taylor Swift’s 146 US shows this year.

The last time the superstar appeared in Auckland, her show logistics arrived in two Antonov AN-124–100 planes - a Ukrainian-made heavy transport plane more often used to transport battle tanks and rocket thrusters, with a thirsty fuel consumption of 12.6 tons of A1 Avgas per hour.

However, by far the largest sustainability consideration when it comes to a stadium-sized tour is still the transport of a combined 100,000 concert-goers - especially when airlines are required to put on additional flights to accommodate them.

Bigger might not necessarily be better for all aspects of touring, or the planet.

Taylor’s pair of swift Dassault Falcons Last year Taylor Swift came under scrutiny over a pair of private jets, a Dassault Falcon 7X and a Dassault Falcon 900, N621MM and N898TS. Swift’s jets have taken a combined 140 flights since the Eras tour kicked off in March 2023. The planes are so prolific they have an automated social media account, tracking their every movement: @taylorswiftjets . 230 flights and counting.

Last year UK musicians ColdPlay’s half-a-billion dollar extravaganza, the Music Of The Spheres Tour, tapped into the fact that pop concerts needed greater environmental accountability.

As ColdPlay’s lead songwriter Chris Martin put it, the musicians were “very conscious” of the climate crisis. The Fix You singer was equally aware there were huge levels of emissions and a massive amount of plastic that goes to waste. (“... When you lose something you can’t replace”.)

In June the band said in a statement they had still fallen short of their self-imposed target of a 50 per cent reduction on CO2e per show, compared to their 2016 world tour. The 47 per cent reduction was commendable, except for the fact it had “not included fan travel to and from the venue in our direct emission figures”.

Beyond accusations of “greenwashing”, some environmentalists were encouraged that tours were making an effort to become more energy efficient.

MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative, which was tasked with auditing the show’s sustainability, said the exercise showed the vast volume of emissions that come from a production of this scale.

Professor John Fernandez of MIT said it was a wake-up call that the touring industry needs to “take seriously the reality of living and making music in the Anthropocene”.

In the tour’s sustainability pledge, fans were encouraged to use low-carbon transport to and from shows and to offset travel by planting at least one tree per ticket bought. However, the tour organisers had few ways to accurately calculate the distance travelled by showgoers.

Whether tour organisers can find better emission economy by offering more but smaller performances - or alternatively, by relying on concertgoers to travel internationally to fill larger venues - is a tough problem to solve. But travel is a big part of the equation.

Sustainability is arguably the least sexy part of international pop music. When 90,000 fans cram into Wembley Stadium next June during the Eras Tour, you can guarantee not one of them will be there for the carbon credits or compostable cups.

While ColdPlay fell short of their proposed sustainability goals, they did go some way to accountability and a long way to raising the issue with audience members. But if concerts are punished for reporting emissions targets, there is less incentive for tours to have them.

As Swiss pop-philosopher Alain de Botton recognised back in 2014, celebrities like Taylor Swift and climate change are inextricably linked.

In his book News: A User’s Manual, he half-jokingly said that in the battle for interest between the American chart-topper and Antarctic ice levels, climate change doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell.

“We are interested in Taylor Swift’s legs not because we are evil - but because we are wired in unhelpful ways,” de Botton wrote.

“If we are going to be interested en masse in the defrosting poles, we need to take our fragilities on board and therefore get serious, very serious, about trying to make important news not just ‘important’, but also beguiling - almost as tempting to hear about as Taylor’s legs. Then things stand a chance of changing.”

Taylor Swift reveals 'Anti-Hero' music video, the first for her new album, Midnight s

Taylor Swift is up to that "vigilante s---" in her new music video.

The pop star has released her first music video from her new album, Midnights , which features Swift facing... well, herself. In it, two doppelgängers, one a party animal and the other a giant-sized version of Swift, poke and prod at the real singer's insecurities.

As Swift herself, who wrote and directed the music video, put it in a tweet, "Watch my nightmare scenarios and intrusive thoughts play out in real time."

In one of these nightmare scenarios, actors Mike Birbiglia ( Sleepwalk With Me ) and John Early ( Search Party ) play Swift's future sons, while Mary Elizabeth Ellis ( It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia ) portrays her imagined daughter-in-law, whom she fears "kills her for the money." Swift sings, "She thinks I left them in the will."

"Anti-Hero" is the first single from the album, which the singer had previously kept under lock and key. Not including her two 2020 surprise albums, Folklore and Evermore , this marks the first time Swift has not released a single before unveiling an album.

Though fans hadn't gotten a taste of the actual song in advance, Swift had opened up about the meaning behind it. In a candid clip posted to her Instagram , Swift said she considers "Anti-Hero" one of her favorite songs she's ever written because it's so frank.

"I don't think I've delved this far into my insecurities in this detail before," she said. "I struggle a lot with the idea that my life has become unmanageably sized and, not to sound too dark, I struggle with the idea of not feeling like a person."

While she told fans not to "feel bad" for her, she explained that "Anti-Hero" is a "guided tour" of all the things Swift tends to "hate" about herself.

Taylor Swift/YouTube Taylor Swift brings her 'nightmare scenarios' to life in her new 'Anti-Hero' video.

"We all hate things about ourselves, and it's all of those aspects of the things we dislike and like about ourselves that we have to come to terms with if we're going to be this person," she said. "So I like 'Anti-Hero' a lot because I think it's really honest."

Swifties had to wait for the "Anti-Hero" video, but they won't have to wait long for the singer's next one. She previously revealed that a second music video will be released Oct. 25 at midnight ET, though she didn't say which Midnights track it would be for. On Thursday Night Football on Prime Video, Swift revealed that she had filmed videos for several different songs, which will star Laura Dern, Jack Antonoff, the Haim sisters, and more.

In other words, keep that midnight oil burning just a little bit longer.

Midnights is out now.

Taylor Swift soaks it all in while performing in concert.

The Tortured Poet is headed to the Venice of the North.

From July 4-6, Taylor Swift will bring her ongoing, international ‘Eras Tour’ to Amsterdam, NIL’s Johan Cruijff Arena.

She’ll be joined by special guest Paramore at all three gigs.

And, if you’ve held out until the last minute to buy tickets, you’re in luck.

When our team last reported on ‘Eras Tour’ ticket prices back in April, the lowest price we could find on tickets for her Amsterdam shows was a whopping $776 USD before fees on Vivid Seats.

Now, a little over two months later, prices start at $275 before fees at the time of publication.

Yes, that’s over $500 (!) in savings.

Sometimes “all of this silence and patience, pining in anticipation” as Tay Tay sings in “Dress,” really does pay off.

Want to see Swift do her thing live on Ajax’s home turf?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more about Taylor Swift’s three Amsterdam ‘Eras Tour’ concerts below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

Taylor Swift ‘Eras Tour’ news

Our team has been following the ‘Eras Tour’ closely over the past year.

Over the past few months, we spoke to a Swiftie who  shared some helpful tips  about seeing Taylor live, reported on  dropping ticket prices , and  came up with a list of all the most exciting fan trends .

Taylor Swift new music

Swift’s  “The Tortured Poets Department”  was released at midnight (and subsequently at 2 a.m.) on Friday, April 19.

While every listener will likely come away with their own favorites, we particularly enjoyed the sleek, synthy “Fortnight,” icy “So Long, London,” anthemic “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” a bombastic slow build of “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” and gorgeously arranged “Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus.”

If you want to give it a spin — if you’e one of the few people on the planet that hasn’t already, that is — you can find “The Tortured Poets Department”  here .

The Hayley Williams-fronted pop-punk rockers are opening for Swift from May through August this year. This may come as a bit of a surprise to some fans considering that the group mounted a successful arena tour of their own in 2023.

That tour came on the heels of Paramore’s 2022 reunion; Prior to that, the band had been on a five-year hiatus.

For fans who want to check out their latest, their 2023 album “This Is Why” can be heard  here .

Huge stars on tour in 2024

Although it will cost an arm and a leg (sometimes more!) to see Swift live this year, there are much more affordable — likely stateside — concerts you can attend this year.

Here are just five of our favorite artists you won’t want to miss live.

•  Olivia Rodrigo

•  Kacey Musgraves

•  Gracie Abrams

•  Billie Eilish

Mary Elizabeth Ellis in Taylor Swift's "Anti-Hero" music video

Mere hours after releasing her new album, “Midnights,” Taylor Swift shared the project’s first music video — and it includes a clever cameo from one of her past tour costumes.

In the clip for lead single “Anti-Hero,” which Swift wrote and directed, she comes face to face with her biggest insecurities and anxieties in highly literal fashion, even spying on her own funeral in one dreamlike sequence.

Mike Birbiglia, John Early and Mary Elizabeth Ellis play Swift’s fictional adult kids bickering over her will in the scene, with the latter wearing a familiar-looking LBD to the event.

As the trio fight about who “[traded] on Mom’s name” the most, Early’s character tells Ellis’, “You’re literally wearing her clothes right now.”

“That’s from the ‘Fearless’ tour. 2009,” adds Birbiglia’s character of the bedazzled black number, which Swift did indeed wear onstage more than a decade ago.

It’s not the first time Swift’s resurrected past stage looks for a music video; who could forget the clip for 2017’s “Reputation” lead single, “Look What You Made Me Do,” which included dozens of her most iconic outfits from past musical eras, among them her “Red” ringmaster getup, her “Swan Lake” look from “Shake It Off,” her “You Belong With Me” pajamas and even her 2014 Met Gala gown.

Fans of the superstar’s videos (and her signature cryptic clue-dropping) can look forward to plenty more visuals in the “Midnights” era; ahead of the LP’s release, Swift shared a teaser trailer for the many videos to come, which will feature additional cameos from the likes of Laura Dern, Dita von Teese and the Haim sisters.

Here’s hoping for plenty more fashion Easter eggs, too.
