Do I need a visa to visit Thailand?

Citizens of dozens of countries can enter  Thailand visa-free.

This makes it one of the easiest countries in Asia to visit impulsively. Other travelers and visitors on longer trips need a visa, but they're easy and inexpensive to obtain.

There's a lot to see and do in Thailand , and your visa must cover the full period of your stay. Make sure you know the requirements before your trip – read on for the basics.

What you need to know about visas in Thailand

Entry procedures for tourists to Thailand are very straightforward, whether you arrive by air or overland. Thailand shares land borders with  Malaysia ,  Myanmar ,  Cambodia and  Laos , and many people zip in and out multiple times on a multi-destination trip around  Southeast Asia .

Many travelers can arrive in Thailand visa-free; the remainder have to apply for tourist visas. For all visa classes, you need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry, with several spare blank pages. You can be denied entry without proof of an onward ticket and sufficient funds for your stay, but in practice, this is rarely checked. You'll also need to enter an address in Thailand on your arrival card, but again, this is rarely followed up. If you don't have a hotel booked, pick a name  from a guidebook or an online search.

The  Ministry of Foreign Affairs oversees immigration and visa policies; check the website or contact the nearest Thai embassy or consulate for the current rules. The  'Do I need a tourist visa? ' section of Thailand's e-visa website is very helpful for identifying requirements based on your nationality.

Visa-free entry to Thailand depends on what passport you hold

Thailand allows visa-free entry for tourists from many countries for stays of 30 to 90 days. The exact list of countries and permitted durations of stay varies , but it usually includes the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, most of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and more prosperous nations in Asia, South America and the Middle East.

Some visitors can get a tourist visa on arrival (VoA)

Citizens of some smaller European countries and a handful of destinations in Asia can get a tourist visa on arrival (VoA) for stays of 15 days .

There are desks handling the paperwork at more than 30 airports and land border crossings. You'll need a recent passport photo, proof of funds to support yourself and tickets for onward travel within 15 days. The cash fee is 2000B (about US$60), payable in Thai Baht.

Backpacker on suspension bridge in rainforest in Thailand

Get a tourist visa in advance from your local embassy or consulate, or online

If you are not eligible for visa-free travel or a VoA, you will need to apply for a tourist visa ahead of your visit. It allows a stay of up to 60 days and is valid for three or six months. Fees and conditions vary; contact your local Thai embassy or consulate for the latest rules.

The Thai government's e-visa process makes applying online a possibility for eligible nationalities. Use  the Q&A form to understand if this process is open to you. If it is, you can create an online account and follow the steps to provide all the requested information digitally, paying the application fee ahead of processing. If your application is successful, a confirmation email will be sent to you, which you should print out and show to airline or immigration officials when traveling to Thailand.

Education visas are available for those going to study

Thousands of travelers visit Thailand yearly for long-term diving training, meditation study, Muay Thai courses, language lessons and more. If that's you, you can  apply for an education visa .

You'll need a letter of acceptance from an accredited education institution showing proof of enrollment on a course, and your passport should be valid for at least six months past the end of the course. The single-entry visas are valid for three months.

Thailand doesn't yet have a true digital nomad visa

The closest thing Thailand has to a digital nomad visa is the new LTR (long-term resident) visa . Unfortunately, it's geared toward those with money. Applicants must pay a processing fee of 50,000B (approximately US$1380) and show proof of earning US$80,000 per year (or at least US$40,000 per year if they can fulfill other requirements, such as having a master's degree). They also need insurance covering US$50,000 and must work in a legally registered company that has an income of no less than US$150 million within the past three years. If granted, it allows up to a 10-year stay for skilled professionals who wish to work from Thailand.

Tourist visas can be extended in Thailand

If you run short on time during your stay, tourist visas can be extended for an additional 30 days at any immigration office in Thailand at the discretion of Thai immigration authorities; the usual fee is 1900B. See the website of the  Immigration Bureau for office listings.

Remember to dress in your best when you visit the office; turning up in threadbare beachwear and thongs is unlikely to reassure the immigration officers that you have funds to support yourself for a longer stay.

For all types of visa extensions, bring two passport-sized photos and photocopies of the photo and visa pages from your passport. Always take care of your visa business yourself; if you go through a third party, you'll pay more, and there's a risk of falling for a scam.

What if I overstay my visa?

If you overstay your visa, the usual penalty is a fine of 500B per day, with a 20,000B limit. Fines must be paid in Thai baht, either at the airport or in advance at an immigration office. Kids under 15 are exempt, and if you've overstayed by only one day or your departure is delayed because of circumstances beyond your control (eg a flight cancellation by the airline), you usually won't get charged.

"The visa run" is still a possibility... twice

Another extremely popular extension-of-stay option for travelers eligible for visa-free entry is simply to cross a land border and re-enter Thailand after a few days. A new visa exemption will be issued upon your return.

This typically works well the first two times, but authorities are becoming increasingly strict towards travelers who try to extend their stay indefinitely by popping over the border multiple times; don't expect to be able to come back in if you've already done it twice, and remember that re-entry is at the discretion of the visa agent.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Thailand set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Royal Thai Embassy in the UK.

COVID-19 rules

Countries may restrict travel or bring in rules at short notice. Check with your travel company or airline for changes.

If you test positive for COVID-19, you may need to stay where you are until you test negative. You may also need to seek treatment there.

You should also read TravelHealthPro’s general COVID-19 advice for travellers .

Travel to Thailand

If you are visiting Thailand and then travelling to a country that requires an RT-PCR test for entry, you will need to buy medical insurance that covers COVID-19 treatment before you arrive in Thailand.

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from when you enter Thailand.

You could be refused entry to Thailand if your passport is damaged or has pages missing.

If you’re a dual national, to avoid problems at immigration, you must leave Thailand on the same passport you used to enter.

If you need to renew or apply for a new British passport, see overseas British passport applications .

Visa requirements

British passport holders arriving by air or land can enter Thailand without a visa (visa exemption) for the purpose of tourism for a period not exceeding 30 days.

If you intend to stay longer (for work, study or other reasons) you need a visa before you travel.

For more information on visas or entry requirements, contact the  Royal Thai Embassy  or local Immigration Office.

Overstaying your visa

If you stay beyond the period of your visa, you will be fined 500 Thai baht a day up to a maximum of 20,000 baht. You risk being:

  • held in detention
  • deported at your own expense
  • banned from re-entering Thailand for up to 10 years

Conditions in detention centres can be harsh.

Vaccination requirements (other than COVID-19)

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need on TravelHealthPro .

Depending on your circumstances, this may include a yellow fever vaccination certificate.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of Thailand . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Importing cigarettes

It is illegal to import more than 200 cigarettes per person into Thailand. This is enforced at customs on arrival. If you go over the limit, you could be fined 10 times the value. Your cigarettes will likely be confiscated.

Thailand Vacation Checklist: What You Need to Organize & Pack

Planning a vacation to Thailand can be an exciting experience, but with so many details to consider, it's easy to forget something important and panic at the last minute.

But don't worry! In this post, I will provide you with helpful tips and essential considerations to ensure that you can plan, pack and embark on your adventure to Thailand with confidence.

As a side note, I highly recommend traveling light, as it can be a long journey, especially if you plan on exploring multiple parts of the country.

Plus, with the hot climate, you won't need to pack too many clothes anyway. Leaving room in your luggage will free up much-needed space for souvenirs and gifts on your return trip.

So, without further ado, let's start ticking off your Thailand to-do list and make sure you're well-prepared for your travels.

koh-samui-villa

Samujana Villa, Koh Samui

The Ultimate Thailand Vacation Checklist

The first thing you should consider, well in advance of your trip, is whether or not you will need a visa.

If you're visiting Thailand for under 30 days then you won't, because you'll enter on a 30-day exemption stamp, which is stamped in your passport on arrival.

Please note that at the time of writing Thailand is providing tourists with a 45-day entry stamp as a way of boosting tourism post the pandemic period.

If you're planning to stay longer than 30 days you can get a Tourist Visa from your local Thai embassy.

A single entry Tourist Visa will give you a 60-day stay, and a multiple entry Tourist Visa is valid for 6 months, with permitted stays of 60 days at a time.

With the multiple entry visa you can leave after 60 days to a neighboring country, and then re-enter to activate a further 60-day stay on the visa.

Other visas are available for volunteering, education, retirement and more.

+ A guide to visas can be found here

2. Passport (plus copies)

Sounds obvious, but if I had a pound for every person who realized they'd forgotten their passport at the airport I'd be a millionaire.

You'll need at least 6 months left on your passport to travel to Thailand, so check it now in case you need to apply for a new one.

Make a couple of photocopies of your passport, too, as you may need these to provide the hotel, or bike or car rental places, etc. As a side note: never leave your real passport with any company; always provide a copy.

It's also a requirement in Thailand for foreign nationals to carry their passport at all times.

However, I don't advise carrying your passport around with you. The safest place for it is in your hotel room's safe. Instead, carry a color photocopy with you when out and about. This will suffice should a police officer ask to see it.

You can also carry your driver's license or ID card, as proof of identification.

Another good idea is photocopy the page of your passport with the entry stamp you receive upon entry. In addition to your passport showing your identification, this will show when you arrived in the country.

3. Vaccinations

Depending on your medical history, or your stance on vaccination, you may want to get the recommended vaccines for traveling to Thailand.

Note that Yellow Fever vaccine is required for those traveling from a country with risk of transmission.

+ More on the vaccine schedule here

4. Return Flight Information

When entering as a tourist it is a legal requirement to have a return or onward flight booked.

Print out a copy of your flight information and keep it in your rucksack or travel wallet.

You may or may not be asked for this information, but you do need it. If you are staying in Thailand longer than 30 days and you will need a visa.

5. Hotel Reservation Information

When you're on the plane you will be given an arrival card to fill out. This can also be done on arrival (at immigration), but to save time they give out the cards on the plane.

You will need to fill in the name and address of the hotel you are going to stay in.

So that you have it handy, print out your hotel reservation information before you travel and keep it in your rucksack or travel wallet.

Of course, this kind of information is easily stored on your phone, but if your battery dies or you can't get reception to access your email, having a hard copy will save you a lot of hassle.

You'll also want to carry a copy of the hotel address around with you. If you are traveling as a family, each member should have this information, just in case you are separated at any point and lose contact, such as when out shopping. Having the address is useful for showing a taxi driver or member of the public to help you get home.

Pro Tip: Always carry a pen. You'll need one to fill out your arrival card, but a pen will also come in handy if you need to quickly jot something down.

6. Carry-On Cash

All foreigners traveling to Thailand must be able to provide proof of adequate finances for their duration of stay. This can be in the form of traveller’s cheques or cash equivalent to 10,000 Baht per person and 20,000 Baht per family.

People are rarely asked to prove that they have access to this money, but best practice is to carry this as a minimum amount of cash.

If you're not carrying Baht, take the exchange rate of your local currency into consideration to make sure it converts to cover the amount required.

7. Emergency Numbers

Hopefully you won't need these, but make a note of these emergency service numbers for your holiday in Thailand.

  • Tourist Police – 1155
  • Police and general emergency – 191
  • Ambulance and Rescue: 1669
  • Highway Patrol: 1193
  • Immigration Bureau: 1178

8. Sunscreen

Thailand has a tropical climate and it gets very hot. Even if you're a sun lover and can't wait to get your bronze on, don't neglect the use of sunscreen. Even when it's cloudy, you can still burn, believe me!

Be sensible and allow yourself to tan gradually. By all means get your fill of vitamin D, but be careful not to overexpose yourself. Sun stroke is very real and can see you hospitalized. The very hot weather can also dehydrate you very quickly, so keep topping up with water and ice lollys.

Hats are a must for baldies like me!

9. Beach Shoes

Flip flops are great for the beach, but even then I prefer waterproof shoes (like the ones surfers wear). With beach shoes you can go in and out of the sea and up and down the beach without constantly having to slip flip flops on and off.

The beach shoes tend to be better for walking, with less chance of tripping over as the flop bends and gets caught under your foot.

10. Breathable Walking Shoes

Traipsing round town in socks and shoes/trainers can be uncomfortable because it's so darn hot. Socks just get sweaty and make you feel hotter, and the trainers/ shoes you wear back home may not feel comfortable without socks on.

Instead, bring a pair of good quality sandals, comfy loafers or other type of breathable walking shoes that you can happily walk around in all day.

Pro tip: Break in the shoes before you travel, as you don't want to find out that the shoes cause blisters half way through a shopping trip.

+ More on clothes for Thailand here

11. Good Quality Backpack

If you're backpacking around Thailand, or even just planning on a bit of island hopping, investing in a comfortable, lightweight backpack will be a God send.

Suitcases can be awkward to lift on and off boats and trains and taxis, though do make a good seat at an airport.

+ See my backpack recommendations here

If you find yourself stuck with your baggage and you want to go off shopping for the day perhaps in between a hotel change or on the day you leave, you can always use a baggage storage company.

+ See the best baggage storage companies here

12. Plug Adapter

Some hotels have plugs to suit US and European devices, and if not they generally have adapters at reception that you can borrow.

However, if you're staying on an island in a bungalow, or even in Bangkok in cheaper accommodation, you may find yourself short of an adapter. Bring a couple with you, just in case.

An adapter will also come in handy at the airport if you want to charge your phone, tablet, or computer.

13. Credit Card with Zero Transaction Fees

Cash  is generally needed for food stalls and markets, but every chain restaurant and mall shop takes cards. So get yourself a credit or debit card that doesn't charge for foreign transactions or ATM withdrawals.

Note that ATMs in Thailand charge per withdrawal, anywhere from 3-7 USD per withdrawal. This is unavoidable, as it's a local charge.

+ I recommend Wise. See here

14. Keeping Your Money Safe

With horrible bank fees in mind, if you do withdraw money, it is better to withdraw a substantial amount in one go so that you don't wrack up too many fees during your stay.

Most ATMs have a 20,000 Baht withdrawal limit, but that's still a lot to carry around, and carrying a large amount of cash is never wise.

So leave some in the safe of the hotel room and only take out what you think you will need. If you're a couple, split the money you carry between you. That way, if one person is parted with their cash for some reason, the impact is only half as bad.

Use a money wallet or some form of holdall that sits at the front of your body. Never store your wallet in a bag or backpack that can be accessed from behind or the side.

15. Exchanging Cash

Always exchange your money inside Thailand. It's almost always favorable to do so.

You can exchange at the airport when you arrive. Use the exchange kiosks in the arrivals hall after you collect your bags, as they have a better rate than the ones near immigration or at an exchange in town.

The Super Rich exchange usually has good rates; see Floor B at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

16. Sim Card

By all means travel with your current sim card, but make sure you check international rates with your provider before you leave.

Depending on the cost of calls and SMS while you are abroad, you may want to get a local Thai sim card when you arrive and pop that into your phone.

You can get a sim card for a couple of Dollars and top it up as and when you need credit. It may work out much cheaper for you.

If you have a dual Sim phone, or a phone that takes an eSim, bring that along to make life easier.

+ More on Sim Cards here

17. Travel Insurance

I don't want to be pessimistic, but no one wants to get stuck in Thailand with a huge medical bill they can't pay. It's not worth tempting fate.

The way to avoid this is to get travel insurance. I recommend Safetywing and have been using them for the past 3 years.

+ Here's an overview of the policy they offer

18. Book Hotels & Trips in Advance

Booking hotels and travel tickets in advance is a very good idea.

As a popular tourist destination, during peak seasons, hotels and transportation options can fill up quickly. By booking in advance, you can secure your desired travel plans without stressing at the last moment because your preferred hotel or flight route is fully booked.

By booking in advance, you may secure better deals. Early bird discounts and package deals are often available in advance of peak season.

And then there's the convenience. You don't have to worry about last-minute planning or making changes to your itinerary. Instead, you can focus on enjoying your trip knowing that all your travel arrangements have been taken care of.

See the links in the box below for recommended providers.

Taking the time to plan and pack for your trip to Thailand is crucial to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable vacation.

By following the tips and suggestions in this article, you can make sure you have everything you need for your journey and avoid any last-minute mishaps.

It's a good idea to bookmark this page in your browser for future reference, or copy the link down in a document. That way you can refer back to this list and tick of things as you go.

Easy Steps to Apply for Thailand Pass

Thailand has recently reopened the country to travelers, both Thais and foreigners whether vaccinated or unvaccinated. In this newsletter, you will learn about the Easy Steps in Applying for a Thailand Pass.

Step 1: Visit the official Thailand Pass website

You may go to the official website: https://tp.consular.go.th/

Once there, you may choose the option for Non-Thai Nationals or Thai Nationals.

Visit the official Thailand Pass website

After that you will be directed to a page where you can choose the entry program:

  • Test and Go program for fully vaccinated travelers entering any international airport and land border in Thailand
  • Sandbox program for fully vaccinated travelers entering Pattaya, Phuket, or Samui only.
  • Alternative Quarantine for partially vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers.

Note: Since the Test and Go program is open to travelers from all countries and it is available in most provinces in Thailand arriving by air, land, or sea, there is no point to apply for the Thailand Pass under the Sandbox program which is only limited to certain areas such as Phuket, Samui, and Pattaya .

Choose the Entry Program

Step 2: Details of your Arrival

In this part, you will provide the purpose of travel to Thailand whether for tourism or if you are a returning resident.

You will also provide your country of departure, airport of arrival, flight number, date of arrival, and proposed exit date from Thailand.

For travelers to Phuket and Samui, only sealed flights are allowed. If you are not traveling on a sealed flight to these islands, you must stay overnight in Bangkok, do a one night Test and Go stay before you can fly to Phuket or Samui.

Details of your Arrival

Step 3. Provide your Personal Information

In this part, you will provide your full name as stated in your passport or travel document, nationality, passport number, date of birth, and email address. It is also recommended to use a GMAIL email account when applying for Thailand Pass.

Provide your Personal Information

Step 4. Upload Proof of Vaccination

In this part, you will provide your vaccination information. You will provide the name or brand of your vaccination and also the date of vaccination. You will be able to upload a JPG or PNG file of your proof of vaccination.

For faster processing of your Thailand Pass, it is recommended to also upload the QR code of your vaccination document if it is available.

Note: If you are applying under the Quarantine Program and you are not fully vaccinated, you may skip this part of the process.

Proof of Vaccination

Step 5: Provide Your Hotel Details

In this part, you will be required to provide the details of your SHA+ or AQ hotel reservation . You will provide the type of accommodation, name, and address, reservation number, and the check-in and check-out dates. If you are applying under the test and go program, you are required to book for Day 1. For the Sandbox program, you will book for at least 7 nights. And for the Alternative Quarantine program, you must book at least 10 nights. Please make sure that the hotel reservation is fully paid in order for your hotel to approve your Thailand Pass application.

The Thailand Pass requirement for the COVID Travel Insurance has been reduced to 20,000 USD from the original 50,000 USD requirement. Insurance policies with 50,000 USD or 100,000 USD coverage will remain valid.

Based on experience, the common problem for Thailand Pass applications being rejected is that some insurance policies are not properly worded. Your COVID-19 insurance must expressly state that it covers up to 20,000 USD medical expenses including COVID-19 while in Thailand.

You may use your own health insurance or purchase insurance from your own country, however, it is recommended to purchase from an insurance company in Thailand such as AXA Insurance Thailand to make sure that you meet the requirement in obtaining the Thailand Pass successfully.

  • Your certificate of insurance will expressly state that it covers up to 20,000 USD medical expenses including COVID-19. It will also state that the certificate is issued for the purpose of the Thailand Pass application.
  • The AXA Sawasdee Thailand provides a one-page certificate of insurance which is perfect for the Thailand Pass application since the system will only allow one-page document to be uploaded.
  • Your insurance letter or certificate will also contain the policy number and date of effectivity or start date.
  • The AXA Insurance policy must be effective before or on the date of arrival and during your entire length of stay.

When you submit your AXA Thailand Pass Insurance, please make sure that you attach or upload the correct document as below:
