It’s been a decade since The Cure last visited South America as part of their “The Great Circle Tour” in 2013. The Primavera Latin American dates now form an extension of the band’s current North American “Songs Of A Lost World” tour itinerary, set to wrap at the Miami-Dade Arena in Miami, FL, on July 1. Following on from these shows, The Cure will also be performing at the Riot Fest in Chicago on September 17 and then at Corona Capital 2023 in Mexico City on November 19.

“Songs Of A Lost World” marks The Cure’s first North American tour for seven years. The band originally attempted to make their shows as affordable as possible by offering zero “platinum” or “dynamically priced” tickets, and also only limited their sales to those registered as Ticketmaster Verified Fans in an attempt to prevent scalping.

Earlier in June, Primavera Sound held its flagship festival in Barcelona and staged an event in Madrid for the first time.

The Cure have announced the band will tour South America as part of their "Shows Of A Lost World" tour.

The Cure's Robert Smith recently took to Twitter to share the news, tweeting, "2023 IN ARGENTINA: BRAZIL: CHILE : COLOMBIA: MEXICO: PARAGUAY: PERU: URUGUAY… BUT SORTING OUT THE DEALS IS TAKING A BIT LONGER THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD… MORE DETAILS WHEN THEY EXIST… ONWARDS X."

The group last visited South America as part of their "The Great Circle Tour" in 2013.

The Cure announces 6-country tour of South America in April — plus Mexico City concert

As Robert Smith first teased last summer, The Cure will return to South America for the first time in 17 years this April, mounting its first-ever large-scale tour of the continent, performing seven concerts in Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile and Colombia — followed by a one-off show in Mexico City on Smith’s birthday to end the trek.

The band formally announced the long-rumored tour (see full dates below) on its website today , with Smith offering the following statement:

“We are deliriously happy to be coming back to South America at last – we have been away for far too long! We will be playing 3+ hour shows, and have every intention of making this the most memorable Cure Tour EVER!

Outside of two Brazilian concerts in 1996, The Cure hasn’t played in South America since the Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me trek of 1987, a 11-date tour that only hit Brazil and Argentina.

Last summer, Smith told interviewers backstage at a Swiss festival that the band would return to South America: “We’re supposed to go there just after Easter next year. We’re going to play in every… not every country in South America. We’re not playing in Ecuador because people don’t play in Ecuador. But we’re playing Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Venezuela.”

Unless the itinerary expands, The Cure – featuring Smith, Simon Gallup, Jason Cooper, Roger O’Donnell and Reeves Gabrels – won’t actually be playing in Uruguay and Venezuela.

But Smith is holding true to his plans to skip Ecuador.

The Cure’s LatAm2013 Tour:

April 4: HSBC Arena, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil April 6: Morumbi, São Paulo, Brazil April 9: Jockey Club, Asunción, Paraguay April 12: River Plate Stadium, Buenos Aires, Argentina April 14: Estadio Nacional, Santiago, Chile April 17: Estadio Nacional, Lima, Peru April 19: Simon Bolivar Park, Bogotá, Colombia April 21: Foro Sol, Mexico City, Mexico

“PLANS TO SKIP ECUADOR”? UMMM… THEY WOULD BE MIGHTY STRANGE ‘PLANS’ INDEED! UNFORTUNATELY WE JUST COULDNT MAKE IT WORK IN ECUADOR, URUGUAY OR VENEZUELA – BUT THE BAND ARE PLAYING PARAGUAY, COLOMBIA AND MEXICO… LESS SARDONIC PLEASE!

El Salvador's Bukele Starts Second Term, Promises 'Medicine' to Cure the Economy

El Salvador's Bukele Starts Second Term, Promises 'Medicine' to Cure the Economy

By Nelson Renteria

SAN SALVADOR (Reuters) -El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele took office on Saturday for a second term pledging to cure the "illnesses" of the Central American country by prescribing his medicine to fix the economy, following his successful treatment to cure the "cancer of the gangs" during his first five years in office.

The 42-year-old former nightclub manager was reelected in a landslide victory with more than 80% of the vote in February, following a court decision that paved the way for his re-election even though the country's constitution prohibits it.

"Salvadorean society is still sick but it no longer has cancer," Bukele told the crowd from the balcony of the National Palace in the capital San Salvador. The cancer referred to criminal gangs that once made the country one of the world's deadliest to live in, but have been brought under control through mass arrests during his leadership.

"Now that we have fixed the most urgent thing, which was security, we are going to focus on the important problems, starting with the economy," said the president who faces fresh challenges to rejuvenate a stagnant economy and tackle poverty. Bukele added that his "prescription is working."

Saturday's swearing in ceremony took place amid security concerns after police said they had thwarted a bomb threat.

Seven people were arrested for plotting to detonate explosives at locations across the country, police said on Thursday, adding that the suspects were part of the so-called Salvadoran Insurrection Brigade.

Among the attendees at the ceremony was Argentina's libertarian President Javier Milei and Donald Trump Jr, the son of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who arrived in El Salvador on Friday. His father earlier this week became the first former U.S. president to be convicted of a felony.

Bukele, who is of Palestinian descent, won re-election in February after garnering massive popularity in his first term for transforming security in the country of 6.3 million people that was once one of the world's most dangerous.

Authorities under his watch have suspended civil liberties to arrest more than 80,000 Salvadorans without charge which has drawn criticism from human rights groups but won him a devoted following domestically and across the region for bringing safety to the streets.

With safer neighborhoods, public concern has now turned to the economy which will likely be Bukele's biggest challenge in his second term. More than a quarter of Salvadorans live in poverty and unemployment is on the rise.

The president's highly publicized plans for Bitcoin City, a tax-free crypto haven powered by geothermal energy from a volcano, have failed to gain momentum and private investment has tumbled. El Salvador's public debt meanwhile has skyrocketed on Bukele's watch to more than $30 billion, or 84% of the country's gross domestic product.

Economists said the government faced a difficult balancing act to reduce national debt without cutting much-needed social benefits to the country's poorest. "They could end up generating a critical situation for women and households in rural areas," economist Julia Evelyn Martínez based in San Salvador said.

The Black-Owned Businesses Highlighting Afro-Guyanese In One Of South America’s Smallest Countries

N o place in South America offers the best of both worlds – beautiful landscapes and cultures – like Guyana. The first thing locals will tell you, jokingly, upon arrival is Guyana is not to be confused with the West African country Ghana.

Guyana is a Caribbean country bordering Venezuela, Suriname, and Brazil. It’s one of the smallest countries in South America, but it has a distinct culture that makes it stand out.

Situated on the Atlantic Ocean, just north of the Equator, Guyana is South America’s English-speaking country. It boasts a beautiful fusion of African, Asian, Caribbean, Indian, Indigenous, and European influences. Afro-Guyanese are one of the largest ethnic groups in Guyana. In 2012, they made up more than 30 percent of the population.

During your visit to Guyana, these Black-owned businesses will be perfect for exploring Afro-Guyanese culture.

Fresh Restaurant

Michelle Howard is the co-owner of Fresh, an Afro-Guyanese restaurant in the Kingston area. She joined her husband and another friend in creating this restaurant concept during the height of the pandemic.

“I was looking for purpose during the pandemic after moving from Canada,”  Howard tells Travel Noire. “Covid really weighed heavily on me mentally. My husband pointed out that he believed I lacked creativity and encouraged me to do more, especially because I was cooking more and taking pride in it.”

The space opened at the end of 2023 as a love letter from Howard and the other owners to Guyana. Once inside, Howard wants people to slow down and take in Guyana’s welcoming spirit and the incredible food. Howard creates dishes she describes as international flavors with local ingredients from scratch.

The artwork in the restaurant comes from the Indigenous community and is available for purchase.

Herdmanston Lodge Hotel

Located in Queenstown, Georgetown, Herdmanston Lodge Hotel is a boutique hotel that prides itself on excellent guest service. It’s one of only a few hotels that has maintained Guyana’s distinctive colonial architecture. Beyond the distinctive and captivating architecture, the hotel has beautiful and spacious gardens.

Guests staying at the Herdmanston are just a seven-minute walk from the National Park, the Seawall overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and the world-renowned Bourda Cricket Ground. Meetings can be held in conference rooms on-site, and there’s an impressive range of local and international breakfast, lunch, and dinner choices.

Georgetown Market and City Tour With Backyard Café Owner Delven Adams

The market tour hosted by Delven Adams is a highlight for experiencing Afro-Guyanese culture. This is a two-part experience with Adams, who owns the award-winning restaurant Backyard Café.

Adams guides travelers through local shops and markets in Georgetown for what feels like a farm-to-table experience . He brings the spices, vegetables, and fruit to life as he walks you down the stalls to pick up the ingredients for the lunch he prepares later in the day.

The lunch takes place in Adams’ home, right in his backyard – hence the restaurant’s name. Even with the high-profile people who have visited Adams’ backyard to dine, he treats everyone as family and takes pride in inviting people to his home to eat.

Wilderness Explorers

While the tour company isn’t Afro-Guyanese-owned, it has a team of local guides who identify as Afro-Guyanese. The guides take visitors on a breathtaking experience.

One of Wildneress Explorers’ tour highlights is a day trip to Kaieteur Falls. Plummeting 741 feet, Kaieteur Falls is the longest single-drop waterfall in the world. It’s a top attraction in Guyana, providing one of the world’s most impressive sites. Local guides take hikers on an adventurous journey through the park, showing off different views of the falls and the microenvironment it supports.

Lucky visitors can witness rainbows across the gorge and an up-close view of the beautifully colored orange “Cock-of-the-rock” bird and other stunning wildlife.

Regional One doctor heads to NASA to help get America’s astronauts back on the moon

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A Memphis doctor has answered a call from NASA as they prepare for a trip to the moon.

Dr. Tony Alleman of Regional One Hospital is one of about eight doctors in the nation who will be advising and collaborating with NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, to find ways to mitigate the problems of decompression sickness and Patent Foramen Ovale, or PFO.

People with PFO have a hole in their heart, which increases the risk for neurological decompression sickness when exposed to changes in pressure like astronauts can experience in space.

“I’m just real excited to help NASA, that they reached out to me for my expertise, and I certainly want to help my country,” said Dr. Alleman.

Dr. Alleman says neurological decompression sickness can lead to mild numbness and paralysis if it is not treated in a timely manner.

That is why NASA has called on a group of doctors, including Alleman, to make sure the astronauts will be safe in their future trips to space.

Alleman will also give a presentation to the group researching while in Texas.
