Dynamische poprock van Zuid-Koreaanse band

The Rose | zondag 11 februari 2023 | Ronda

Apart from their forthcoming world tour, The Rose have also announced an exclusive contract with Transparent Arts . In a report by Billboard , Transparent Arts’ executives announced that the company, alongside Wasserman Music, will now be representing the band.

“We look forward to fully supporting their creative vision with their upcoming album ‘Heal’ and continue to help expand their global fanbase,” James Roh, COO of Transparent Arts, said of their contract with The Rose.

The band also released a group statement confirming the news, stating that the Transparent Arts team “respects our vision” and that they are “excited to have their support as we grow further in our careers.”

The group’s change in management comes a year after their departure from J & Star Company. In 2020, the band filed a lawsuit against their former label , where they alleged a “lack of payment, breakdown of trust, and violation of exclusive contract”.

While The Rose’s request to terminate their contracts was initially denied, frontman Woosung revealed in June 2021 that the band eventually settled the lawsuit and parted ways with J & Star Company .

The Rose, who filed a lawsuit against their original label J&Star Company to terminate their exclusive contract back in February 2020, have signed a deal with Far East Movement label Transparent Arts. Back in May, the K-pop band announced their self-made label Windfall. “It’s rare to find highly talented artists who also have strong work ethic and sharp business acumen,” James Roh of Transparent Arts said. “We look forward to fully supporting their creative vision with their upcoming album HEAL and continue to help expand their global fanbase.” “The passion behind Transparent Arts has been to identify and amplify Asian artists to a global audience, and The Rose brings such a unique blend of Korean, U.S. and U.K. influences through an incredibly fresh and emotional modern rock sound,” Transparent Arts co-CEO Kevin Nishimura added. “Heal” will be the band’s first full-length album and is “inspired by the stories of the fans and the healing power of music,” according to Billboard . The band’s last comeback was the single “Beauty and The Beast,” which was released in 2021.

The Rose, who debuted in 2017 with the single “Sorry,” is composed of singer-guitarist Woo-sung, vocalist-keyboardist Park Do-joon, drummer Lee Ha-joon and bassist Lee Jae-hyeong.

Will Zalatoris (+6000) … It’s like fishing, isn’t it? Cast the line, wait, and then yank! Setting aside the usual acknowledgment for the absence of traditional Sleepers in Signature Events, if it seems that he’s almost unfairly long at this value in a 73-man field and on a course where he finished T5 in his last appearance (in 2022), then take a bite for a full unit because you’re right. Recent soreness in his back thwarted a home game at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson but it also was his only break during a six-week stretch, so it’s fair to assume that he wouldn’t have committed if the tournament wasn’t in his backyard. He’s shown luster thrice this year with a T2 at The Genesis Invitational, a T4 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and a T9 at the Masters, so the 27-year-old wasted little time in shoving back to center stage after his microdiscectomy. Incidentally, as it concerns only the first six Signature Events, Genesis champ Hideki Matsuyama also was +6000 and only the third-longest winner of the series. However, the next-shortest is Rory McIlroy at but +750 pre-tournament at the Wells Fargo Championship, so there’s been a bit of all or nothing relative to the outrights

Denny McCarthy (+900) … As opposed to leaning into a stronger (read: shorter) angle, let’s ride with the only guy in the field who recorded a top-five in each of the last two editions of the Memorial. The only other in play across the last three post-renovation is none other than Scottie Scheffler with a pair of third-place finishes, but he’s atop the Power Rankings and an absurd (-155) for a Top 5. A year ago, McCarthy was ousted in a playoff by Viktor Hovland but the American led the field during regulation in Strokes Gained: Putting and total distance of putts converted. Of course, he did; that’s what he does. He’s currently second on the PGA TOUR in SG: Putting and No. 1 in both one-putt percentage and fewest putts per round. Running it back to 2022 when he finished T5, he paced the field in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green and conversion percentage from 4-8 feet, missing only one of 19 tries. It’s worth adding that, unlike this week’s limited field, both of the previous two were customarily full fields.

Denny McCarthy uses nice approach to set up birdie at the Memorial

Justin Rose (+550) … So many of the others in his vicinity on the board present as personal preferences. All have some measure of regular promise that is self-evident. The Englishman isn’t that. He’s speculative, which is why he has my attention. This is his first appearance in four years, so it’s his first look at the renovation. However, since splashing at Muirfield Village with a solo fourth in 2004, it really hasn’t mattered what Jack Nicklaus commissioned, Rose has mastered the modifications. Seven of his 10 paydays in 14 trips resulted in a top 10. That includes the 2010 title and runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2015. Yes, he’s now 43 years of age but he’s still competing strongly enough to warrant the hope. Just finished T6 at the PGA Championship and you won’t find an active professional who appreciates what Nicklaus has done for the sport and what the sport gives back more than the Brit. That he gets another crack at the Memorial is a bonus embraced.

Taylor Moore (+300) … Edges Davis Thompson (also at +300) for this endorsement primarily because Thompson, via the Aon Swing 5 (where he’s currently sixth), was the beneficiary of Robert MacIntyre’s decision not to play. Thompson also just secured an exemption into the U.S. Open at final qualifying in Canada , so his dance card suddenly is full of unexpected opportunities. None of that is a negative but Moore has had both circled for some time, so he’s managed his schedule for this fortnight accordingly. For all kinds of obvious reasons, he’s been a common go-to in Sleepers. This is his sixth appearance; he’s connected for touts twice. Half of his most recent eight starts resulted in a Top 20. That includes both majors, so he’s unfazed by the stiffest competition.

Jackson Koivun (+200) … Nothing like a PGA TOUR debut in a Signature Event that happens to be the tournament hosted by Jack Nicklaus. Of course, Koivun isn’t just any general talent. He’s fresh off a national championship at Auburn where he swept all postseason hardware, including the Jack Nicklaus Award for the top college player of the year. He won the SEC Championship (by six strokes), finished T2 in the individual portion of the national championship and led Division 1 in adjusted scoring. So, he’s quickly up to 13 points in PGA TOUR University Accelerated , second-best only to Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent, who deferred his membership until 2025. And talk about respect – albeit with an understanding of how a handle can influence the odds; the 19-year-old is instantly popular – at last check, there were 15 with longer odds for this special market opened due to the construct of the field.

Rose Zhang talks LPGA success, U.S. Open stumble, Olympics hope in exclusive Q&A

Rose Zhang has had quite a season.

It began with a top 10 finish at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions , and then she took some time off to work towards her degree at Stanford. But in late February, she took a break from her studies and made her debut in The Match , playing alongside Rory McIlroy , Max Homa, and Lexi Thompson .

A little more than two months later, in her sixth start since returning from her brief hiatus, Zhang won the Cognizant Founders Cup in New Jersey, her second LPGA win. She then set her sights on Liberty National , where she won the Mizuho Americas Open in her pro debut a year ago, but an illness forced her to withdraw.

But Zhang then struggled in the U.S. Women’s Open and missed the cut, her next and most recent start.

After shaking off a tough two days at Lancaster Country Club, Zhang sat down with Playing Through to discuss her busy season and what is to come, including another major and a potential spot in the Olympics.

One-on-one with LPGA Tour phenom Rose Zhang

(Editor’s Note: This conversation has been slightly edited and modified for readability and clarity.)

Playing Through: What did you learn about yourself after your second win in New Jersey a few weeks ago?

Rose Zhang: Even though I may not have had the smoothest of seasons thus far, I just need to stay resilient, and I am never too far off. During that entire week, I realized that I could really grind it out and play the best I could when the time came. So that gave me a lot of confidence in my abilities to come down the stretch and try to play solid golf.

PT: Going back to that week, what do you think was the strongest part of your game?

Zhang: It had to be my iron play. But from tee to green, I was just very solid. I only missed a couple of greens that entire week; I think I hit 67 [of 72] greens.

At the same time, my putter, with who I have had a love-hate relationship with, definitely came out for me that week. So, I was able to really capitalize because of that.

PT: And then your next start came at Lancaster. What went wrong that week? Was it the course?

Zhang: The course played very difficult, and everyone knew it was going to be a hard test. But it was a perfect U.S. Open course. I think there were a lot of things that happened in between [my win in New Jersey and the U.S. Women’s Open] that I was trying to recover from, and I was trying to work on my game as best as I could.

But when you’re not on top of your game, it’s very difficult to be able to navigate around those types of golf courses.

So that was the main struggle, just trying to get myself back and really grind it out.

PT: Was there a specific part of your game that abandoned you in Lancaster?

Zhang: I wasn’t able to get myself in close positions for birdie opportunities or even solid par opportunities. I was working to save a par or even a bogey for the most part.

At the same time, my putter let me down a few times, especially when I needed it the most. So, it was just those things that really shifted the momentum of my golf game.

PT: What was it like playing with Lexi Thompson in that environment?

Zhang: It was so incredible. I was so happy to be able to be a part of that, especially at her last U.S. Women’s Open, where she announced her retirement. There was so much support for her. I’ve always been very inspired from a young age by what she’s done for the women’s game.

Being a part of that really made me realize how influential Lexi is and how incredible she is as a person and as a player. Everyone should celebrate her and what she has done.

PT: What do you think needs to go right for you at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in a couple of weeks?

Zhang: I think this season, for the most part, has been pretty tough. Just in general, on how to navigate everything, and you really have to peak at major championships.

But I think going into the next major, it’s a clean slate. I’m not thinking about anything too much honestly. I have nothing to prove to anyone but I do want to try and play the best that I can for myself. I have people around me who support me, too. So that’s the main priority.

But in order to play well in a major championship, I need to make sure that everything I am doing is solid fundamentally, and then I go out there and try to grind it out.

That’s the most important thing. Whoever can grind it out the most and make the least amount of mistakes usually comes out on top of the leaderboards.

PT: Have you ever played Sahalee before?

Zhang: No I haven’t.

PT: What have you heard about the course?

Zhang: I just know it’s really tight, and it’s very tree-lined, but other than that, that’s about it. I’ve only played in Washington once, but that was at a bit of a unique golf course in Pullman, Washington for a Pac-12 Tournament at Washington State.

PT: Then, of course, we’ve got the Olympics coming up. What are your thoughts about possibly playing in Paris and representing the United States?

Zhang: It would be a huge honor and so cool to represent my country. I’ve watched the Olympics ever since I was younger, really since I was five. So to be in that environment, along with the best athletes in the world, would definitely be such a great experience.

PT: And have you heard anything about that golf course as well? Le Golf National in Paris. Have you had a chance to play that one, too?

Zhang: I actually played the World Amateur at Le Golf National. So I do know the course very well.

(Zhang, along with Rachel Heck and Rachel Kuehn, earned a silver medal for the United States at the 2022 World Amateur Team Championships. Zhang also finished tied atop the individual leaderboard.)

PT: How close are you to earning your degree from Stanford? And how do you find the time to balance it?

Zhang: So, I’m currently on a leave of absence because I’m prioritizing a little bit more on golf this season. But I will be going back to Stanford for more coursework next winter, and I plan on doing that rotational schedule for the next two years, possibly three.

And, you know, we’re faring along pretty well.

It’s been difficult to balance a little bit just because you do have to sacrifice a little bit more sleep time or rest time, I suppose.

But it’s been very fun to go back to campus and be a full-time student alongside all my other friends.

PT: And finally, you are a big proponent of USWING sunglasses and use them all of the time. How do those help you on the course?

Zhang: They have been a huge addition to my golf game and how I spend my time on the golf course.

I grew up in Southern California and now reside in Las Vegas, so when the sun hits, it hits pretty hard. Wellness has been a huge factor in ensuring that when I’m out there, I’m not completely melting my eyes. But my coach has definitely helped me find sunglasses that allow me to go out there and perform the way that I want to perform while protecting my eyes. So they help a lot, and it’s been great so far.

Audra McDonald to Star in ‘Gypsy’ Revival on Broadway This Fall

The six-time Tony-winning actress will play musical theater’s most famous stage mother in a production directed by George C. Wolfe.

By Michael Paulson

Audra McDonald has been dreaming of “Gypsy” since she was a 10-year-old in Fresno, Calif., with a small part in a dinner theater production of the musical. She played one of the children in a vaudeville act called “Uncle Jocko’s Kiddie Show,” and ever since, she said, “Gypsy” has remained “very much alive in my brain.”

McDonald, who has won more competitive Tony Awards than any other performer in history, has for years been thinking about the show’s main character, a domineering stage mother named Rose. She has even sung from the musical’s score at some of her concerts.

Now, McDonald, 53, will play Rose in a Broadway revival of “Gypsy” opening later this year.

“It’s one of the great roles in musical theater, and I’ve always thought maybe some day I could try it,” McDonald said in an interview. “It scares me to death, but I certainly feel old enough now, and having experienced motherhood, perhaps I have what is needed to dive in and explore her and all that she is.”

The production, directed by George C. Wolfe and choreographed by Camille A. Brown, is to begin previews on Nov. 21 and open Dec. 19 at the Majestic Theater, which has been under renovation since last year’s closing of “The Phantom of the Opera.” (That show ran there for 35 years.)

“Gypsy,” first staged on Broadway in 1959, is inspired by the memoir of Gypsy Rose Lee, a stripper who reflects on her relationship with her mother. The musical’s Rose is ravenously hungry for fame for her daughters, or maybe for herself. The role was originated by Ethel Merman , and has since been played on Broadway by Angela Lansbury , Tyne Daly , Linda Lavin, Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone , on film by Rosalind Russell and on television by Bette Midler .

McDonald said she sees “Gypsy,” which features music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents, as “a perfect musical” and called Rose a “deeply flawed and brilliantly alive character.” She recalled that in a 1989 review in The New York Times, Frank Rich wrote , “‘Gypsy’ is nothing if not Broadway’s own brassy, unlikely answer to ‘King Lear.’”

McDonald has appeared in 13 Broadway shows. Most recently, she starred in a 2022 production of the Adrienne Kennedy play “ Ohio State Murders .” She has been nominated for Tony Awards 10 times; her six wins were for roles in “Carousel,” “Master Class,” “Ragtime,” “A Raisin in the Sun,” “Porgy and Bess” and “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill.” She is the only person who has won Tonys in four different acting categories (leading and featured in musicals and plays).

Wolfe previously directed McDonald in the 2016 Broadway production of “ Shuffle Along, or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed ,” as well as in last year’s Netflix film “Rustin.” Wolfe won Tony Awards for directing “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches” and “Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk” and this year is receiving a special Tony Award for lifetime achievement.

Wolfe said in an interview that McDonald asked him to direct the production, and added that he has a personal connection to one of the authors — Laurents was among his teachers at N.Y.U. in the early 1980s, and became an early supporter of his career. He called “Gypsy” “a really great piece of theater literature” and Rose “one of the best written roles in the musical theater canon.”

He said that his ideas for the production were still evolving. “The thing that keeps on resonating with me is the idea of not enough: not enough space, not enough love, not enough money,” Wolfe said. “That’s what’s pulling me in.”

The “Gypsy” revival — which will be the sixth production of the show on Broadway — is being lead produced by Tom Kirdahy and Mara Isaacs, who are also among the lead producers of “Hadestown.”
