Live reviews

The Strokes are unquestionably one of the best bands out there, and you can really tell that they have been influenced by The Doors. I love The Doors and so I love The Strokes.

Just like Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Strokes (Julian Casablancas) has an element of shyness to him. The band works together very well and they just look like they belong together: if you watch Fab Moretti (the drummer), he's always looking up and watching the other players really intensely. I really enjoy watching them play together and I love to see them live. They don’t talk to the audience much, and mainly just focus on playing, but they do make some contact with the audience. You can tell that their fans really love them and their concerts are always filled with good people.

Due to the fact that they are so popular they usually play for really large crowds, but if you are very lucky you can catch one of their smaller more intimate performances. I've only ever managed to see them with a large crowd, but I have to say it was still really fun. You get a much bigger atmosphere when there are more people; everyone is so excited, but Julian looks so cool and reserved in his leather coat and sunglasses.

Since I've been a fan of theirs (for more than 10 years), I really think that The Strokes are getting better over time and that is good because I want them to be around for a long time!

I was lucky enough to see the Strokes at Governor's Ball in 2014. It had been 3 years since legendary rock band The Strokes had played a show. They surprised New York with a pop up Governor's Ball pre-party show a week prior so it was their second show back after not touring their latest album. Either way, it felt just as special to be their first festival show in a while. I have never had a better concert experience than my Strokes show. Between exploding with "Barely Legal" and ending with "New York City Cops," all 5 albums were touched upon. Frontman Julian Casablancas is extremely confident in the best way possible. He interacted with the audience, sang every song perfectly and messed around with other bandmates during some songs. He even goofily covered Nikolai's eyes while dancing around stage. The fact that there were times when the crowd was singing guitar riffs louder than they were being played is a sign of an amazing show in my opinion. The crowd was on fire and it was obvious the Strokes fed off this energy in an amazing way.

If the Strokes come back for a real tour, do NOT miss out on the opportunity to see them; the show will be so good you'll get chills thinking about it even a month later.

It’s official: they’re back.

The Strokes played in Berlin their first show (in a venue) in Europe in 9 years with a solid combination of their 3 first records, one song from Come Down Machine and 2 new songs (The Adults are Talking and Bad Decisions).

They played with a great mood between them and we could see one of the best Casablancas, joking with the band and the crowd, even singing Last Nite jumping to the public.

I hope this is just the beginning and they play in more venues than during last 14 years.

As someone who grew up listening to The Strokes and holding this band in high regard, it kills me to say that this show was a major disappointment.

Nobody could hear Julian's vocals. I'm not sure if the instruments were too loud or if Julian's mic was indeed too loud, but the fact of the matter is that you could not hear Julian at all.

Besides that, the band themselves sounded awesome and seeing Albert go off during Last Nite was simply awesome. Singing along with the whole crowd to classics like 12:51, Reptillia, and Hard to Explain felt like a dream.

The Floor GA tickets were not cheap and considering the major flaw that basically ruined the show, I can't say I would ever go out of my way to see The Strokes again if they toured nearby.

I recently saw the Strokes at the Forum in LA. It twas my first time and they were tight. Julian's falsetto was on point and I got no complaints. I will definitely be seeing them again! We are lucky that they are still together.

The Strokes Announce North American Shows

By Ryan Reed

UPDATE (3/9): The Strokes have added more U.S. tour dates throughout March and May.

The Strokes lined up a trio of North American shows. The brief run kicks off March 5th in Vancouver, British Columbia; continues March 9th in Seattle and wraps March 14th in Los Angeles.

Indie-pop acts Alvvays and King Princess will support the band in L.A., and the former will also join for the other dates. General tickets for the L.A. show go on sale Friday, January 31st at 10 a.m. PT, and the Seattle and Vancouver dates follow at noon PT. Citi card members can also access a pre-sale for Seattle and L.A.

In May, the Strokes debuted a new song, “The Adults Are Talking,” onstage during a charity show in L.A., marking the band’s first new material since their 2016 EP, Future Present Past . They kicked off 2020 by debuting another cut, “Ode to the Mets,” during their New Year’s Eve show in Brooklyn.

“Yeah, we’ve got a new album coming out soon,” singer Julian Casablancas told the Barclays Center crowd of the as-yet-unannounced LP, their first full-length since 2013’s Comedown Machine . “2020, here we come. The 2010s, whatever the fuck they’re called, we took ‘em off. And now we’ve been unfrozen and we’re back. If you really love someone, you’ll be frozen with them. You know what? I don’t know what I say generally, and I ramble a lot, but I love you guys, and it’s a real honor to share the stage and this night with you guys.”

The band’s live itinerary also includes festival dates at Miami’s III Points Festival and Barcelona’s Primavera Sound .

The Strokes North American Dates

March 19 – Seattle, WA @ WaMu Theater March 14 – Los Angeles, CA @The Forum May 1 – Miami, FL @ Mana Wynwood Convention Center May 3 – Atlanta, GA @ Central Park May 7 – New Orleans, LA @ Saenger Theater May 9 – Austin, TX @ Germania Amphitheater May 12 – Houston, TX @ Smart Financial Centre

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — The first major of the LPGA Tour season gets underway on Thursday in The Woodlands, Texas, as 132 players tackle the challenging Club at Carlton Woods for The Chevron Championship. With a field chock full of the world’s top talent, it can be easy to overlook players who may not be making as many headlines as some of their counterparts when deciding who might fare well at a particular event.

That said, here are a few players worth watching this week at The Chevron Championship:

Ariya Jutanugarn

Even though Ariya Jutanugarn has missed three cuts in her six total starts this year, she’s had some solid finishes thus far in her 10th season on the LPGA Tour, tying for 13th in her home country at the Honda LPGA Thailand and tying for 22nd at the HSBC Women’s World Championship at a challenging Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore. But maybe a better indicator of success at The Chevron Championship than her recent form is Jutanugarn’s past performances at Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses. The Club at Carlton Woods was created by the Golden Bear, and the 12-time LPGA Tour winner played well in the first edition of The Chevron Championship held at the venue, carding four straight 71s en route to a T14 finish in 2023, which was her best major result last year. And funny enough, the two-time major champion captured her second and most recent major victory on a Jack Nicklaus design, winning the 2018 U.S. Women’s Open at Shoal Creek Golf Club in Shoal Creek, Ala., after defeating Hyo Joo Kim in a four-hole playoff. While that win came during one of the high points of Jutanugarn’s professional golf career, an era that saw her ascend to No. 1 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings for the second time not long after her U.S. Women’s Open victory, it still proves that she definitely knows how to tackle these types of golf courses and indicates that she could be a force to be reckoned with this week at The Chevron Championship.

Megan Khang

Megan Khang threatened to become a Rolex First-Time Winner early at the 2023 Chevron Championship, sitting in a tie for second through 36 holes and a tie for third through 54 holes at The Club at Carlton Woods. But she ultimately finished in a tie for ninth, her second-best result in a major championship last season and an early momentum boost that helped her stay the course in search of her first LPGA Tour title later that year. In August 2023, Khang went on to win the CPKC Women’s Open at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, Canada, outlasting former Rolex Rankings No. 1 Jin Young Ko in a playoff to become a Rolex First-Time Winner. Who’s to definitively say that Khang’s early success at The Chevron in April lifted her to victory in August, but, according to KPMG Performance Insights , Khang was tied for fourth in most strokes gained total in major championships last season, all of which took place before she won in Canada. That success can be attributed to her long game, as the Massachusetts native ranked third in strokes gained ball striking in majors last season (+1.72) and was ranked eighth in both strokes gained off the tee (+0.70) and strokes gained approach (+1.02) in those five events, according to KPMG Performance Insights. She also ended the 2023 LPGA Tour season ranked fourth in strokes gained approach (+1.10), a metric she is currently ranked fifth in through five events so far in 2024 (+1.21).

Atthaya Thitikul

Atthaya Thitikul is making her 2024 debut this week at The Chevron Championship after dealing with a left thumb injury that drastically extended her offseason. And while she’s certainly lacking competitive reps, don’t count the 21-year-old out at The Club at Carlton Woods. She finished in a tie for fourth in this tournament last year, carding four under-par rounds over the four tournament days in The Woodlands, Texas, a rare feat considering how challenging this venue can play depending upon the conditions. Statistically, the Thailand native ended her 2023 LPGA Tour season ranked second in strokes gained total, also ranking in the top 20 in both strokes gained off the tee (17) and strokes gained putting (12). But even though she didn’t win a tournament in 2023, Thitikul still earned a whopping 13 top-10 finishes, seven of which were top-five results and the most notable of which besides her T4 in Houston last year was her runner-up finish at the Maybank Championship in Malaysia, when she ultimately fell to Celine Boutier after a nine-hole playoff. Forecasting how she’ll play this week at The Chevron Championship might be a little unpredictable considering the physical challenges she’s faced in recent months, but with a solid history at The Club at Carlton Woods and that kind of 2023 resume in her back pocket, Thitikul just might be able to pull out a third LPGA Tour victory this week outside of Houston.

Albane Valenzuela

Switzerland native Albane Valenzuela might seem like a little bit of a wild card pick at The Chevron Championship, but the 26-year-old was another player who finished in a tie for fourth at The Club at Carlton Woods last April, firing rounds of 72-67-68-73 to earn her career-best finish in a major championship. This week marks her seventh career start in this event and fourth since she became an LPGA Tour member in 2020. It’s also her seventh tournament of the 2024 LPGA Tour season, and in her six previous events, she’s earned two top-15 results, finishing runner-up to Patty Tavatanakit at the Honda LPGA Thailand and tying for 15th at the Blue Bay LPGA. Statistically, her long game is in great shape heading into the major season, as Valenzuela currently ranks fourth in both strokes gained tee to green (+1.55) and strokes gained approach (+1.28), according to KPMG Performance Insights, strong performances in two metrics that should benefit her this week in The Woodlands, Texas as she works to become the season’s second Rolex First-Time Winner.

Tiny course in Canada produces big duo at Zurich Classic of New Orleans

Adam hadwin, nick taylor grew up at 6,200-yard ledgeview golf club.

Change Text Size

Ledgeview Golf Course is only about 6,200 yards long, but don’t be fooled – sloping greens and tight lines off the tees make up for its lack of length. The course also demands solid ball-striking and sound thinking.

When Nick Taylor made the bending 10-footer to get into a playoff at last year’s RBC Canadian Open, Brady Stead, the director of instruction at the small but challenging course, was not surprised.

“I mean, you can hit that putt on our practice green,” Stead said.

Ledgeview is in Abbotsford, British Columbia – about an hour from Vancouver. Stead jokingly says people sometimes say it’s “out in the sticks.” But one look at the course and you’ll understand why it has produced two of Canada’s top-ranked golfers in Taylor and Adam Hadwin.

And with the Canadian duo reuniting for this week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans – where they finished runner-up to Nick Hardy and Davis Riley last year – there’s another whole generation ready to follow in their footsteps.

Taylor/Hadwin make sixth-straight birdie at Zurich Classic

“It really is random until you see why it isn’t,” Stead said of the little course having produced two PGA TOUR winners. “You see the golf course and you understand why it happens. It’s great for us – the kids show up at the golf course and work hard and really believe they can do it.

“It goes back to Mike Weir winning the Masters for all of us growing up. A lot of Canadians believe they can do it, too.”

The most indelible moment in Canadian golf last year was no doubt Taylor winning the RBC Canadian Open in a playoff over Tommy Fleetwood. (PGA TOUR Radio called it thusly: “For the eagle… for the win… to the cup… Yes! Yes! The drought is over! The drought is over! History!”) But before that, Taylor and Hadwin teamed up in New Orleans, a nod to their old junior golf days. Their final-round 9-under 63 was a new alternate-shot scoring record even if it wasn’t enough to catch Hardy and Riley.

Nick Taylor’s winning putt at RBC Canadian Open as called by PGA TOUR Radio

“Our alternate shot was actually better than our best ball this week, which is pretty interesting,” Taylor said with a laugh last year.

Hadwin said there are plenty of reasons why things clicked so well last year. How close the guys are certainly helped, he said, but their games also complement each other well. Hadwin said Taylor is “probably a little better” with his irons, but he, Hadwin, hits it a little farther.

Taylor is indeed 13th in Strokes Gained: Approach to Green this season (to Hadwin’s 106th), while Taylor averages just over 288 yards off the tee to Hadwin at 296 yards. They are both deadly with the putter, with Taylor at 19th in SG: Putting and Hadwin 59th.

A year ago, the scoring formula on the Sunday was Hadwin hit fairways, Taylor hit greens and Hadwin made the putts.

“Hopefully we can replicate some of that magic,” Hadwin said.

Their success is due not just to complementary skill sets but also familiarity. The duo went to different high schools, but they’ve known each other since they were about 12. Hadwin, whose father Gerry worked at Ledgeview, is one year older than Taylor. They have homes about 15 minutes away from each other in Scottsdale. (Taylor spends a lot of time back in Abbotsford with wife Andie and their two kids – Charlie and Harper – while Hadwin and wife Jessica and daughter Maddox have another home in Jessica’s hometown of Wichita, Kansas.)

Hadwin and Taylor have spent the last decade or so climbing golf’s ladder together, including a run on the Korn Ferry Tour. They earned PGA TOUR cards together in 2014 and paired up once before – at the 2018 World Cup, where they tied for fourth. They’re hoping to make Weir’s International team for the Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal this fall, and would be the two Canadian representatives if the Olympics started today.

“It’s pretty wild,” Hadwin said of their parallel golfing journey. “I don’t think it happens very often. You think, 170 or 180 guys have PGA TOUR cards every single year – and we have two from literally 10 minutes apart. Not only that, but two guys in the (top 60) in the world. We probably never thought we’d be at this point.”

Added Taylor: “It’s surreal to reflect on the journey, for sure. Starting out together at Ledgeview at the junior level, our time as amateurs to now both competing on TOUR. It’s very humbling. I know I speak for both Adam and I in saying we are so grateful for all the support from our families, friends, and our community that have helped us reach this point.”

Back at Ledgeview, Stead – the director of instruction who has been at the course for almost a half-decade – said since 2021 the total number of junior-golf rounds has risen by 23 percent, with junior membership numbers having increased by 28 percent. The junior development program at the club has increased from six kids to 30 this year.

The happiest and biggest surprise, he said, was that on junior nights the non-member green fee total (which reflects kids looking to give golf a try) went up 84 percent between 2022 and 2023.

“We had to change our booking policy because of the demand,” Stead said. “It’s definitely a huge attraction to Ledgeview because of what those guys have done. It really does bring a lot of kids to the facility to think, maybe one day, they could be just like them.”

Scottie Scheffler wins RBC Heritage, fourth in 5 PGA Tour events

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA - APRIL 21: Scottie Scheffler looks to hit a tee shot on the 10th hole during the final round of the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links on April 21, 2024 in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. (Photo by Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images)

Scottie Scheffler’s season of excellence continued Sunday at the RBC Heritage. He finished it up on Monday with a three-stroke victory, claiming the event’s signature tartan jacket to go with his green jacket.

He’s the first player to win four starts in a five-star stretch since Tiger Woods in 2007-08. He’s the first person since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to follow up a Masters win with a win the following week (Langer also won at Harbour Town). Gary Player in 1978 and Jimmy Demaret in 1950 also accomplished the feat.

Scheffler has also won the Players Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational during this stretch. In the Houston Open, he finished in a tie for second, and missed a putt to force a playoff. Scheffler now has 10 career wins, all since February 2022.

“I’m just maturing as a person. On the course mentally the last month or so is as good mentally as I’ve been in a long time, and I think that’s why I’m seeing some of the results,” Scheffler told Golf Channel after the win.

Play was called due to darkness Sunday at the event at Harbour Town Links in Hilton Head, S.C., with Scheffler five strokes ahead and three holes to play. There was a 2 1/2 hour weather delay from 4:28 p.m. until 7 p.m. that forced the PGA Tour into a Monday finish.

When he returned Scheffler finished the final three holes in 45 minutes. His bogey on 18 was his first bogey of the week. Sahith Theegala finished second at 16-under, with Wyndham Clark and Patrick Cantlay tied for third at 15-under. Justin Thomas was among the group tied for fifth, a good week for the embattled star.

Scheffler punctuated Sunday with a head-shaking 15th hole — he had an exceedingly rare mishit with his second shot, going just left into the water. As he was taking the drop, CBS attempted to foreshadow what was coming by flashing a graphic that it had been 65 holes since Scheffler had a double bogey. The streak continued. He hit his approach shot with spin, landed on the slope and rolled it to 11 feet. The horn sounded to end play but Scheffler was allowed to finish the hole — he drained the putt, pumped his fist like he had just won the tournament and exited to a waiting golf cart.

Scheffler did not show up at Hilton Head until Wednesday after winning his second Masters, played nine holes in the pro-am and said he would see the rest of the course during his first round on Thursday. It was daring a signature event field to beat him, but instead, he shot a first-round 69, followed that up with a 65 on Friday and a 63 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead into Sunday.

“I played some really good golf in the middle of the tournament. It’s nice to be done,” Scheffler said.

Scheffler shot a final round 68. He is not in the field for this week’s Zurich Classic in New Orleans. It’s not clear yet if he’ll play before the PGA Championship from May 16-19 as he and his wife Meredith await the birth of their first child.
